As we reflect on 2019, we would be remiss to overlook the impacts of current events in our community, healthcare system and across the world. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our daily lives and has certainly impacted our healthcare delivery system, including high demand for protective equipment for staff, testing and action by staff to ensure adequate infection control following the global onset.

Amidst these challenges, our top priority at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital remains the health and safety of our community.

In the middle of this pandemic, our staff has remained focused on our goals for patient safety and quality and we are excited to announce that the American Nursing Credentialing Center has granted Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Magnet status!

It is humbling to see the years of hard work and dedication from our nursing teams officially recognized as the gold standard along with only 9% of more than 6,000 healthcare organizations. The Magnet Recognition Program designates organizations worldwide where nursing leaders successfully align their nursing strategic goals to improve the organization’s patient outcomes. As part of this designation, we received eight quality indicators that outperform the national benchmark and two exemplars in the area of “New

TOP HOSPITAL AWARD FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR The Leapfrog Group - an independent hospital watchdog organization - awarded Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital for a third consecutive year, highlighting their achievements in patient safety and quality.

Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital was named a Top Children’s Hospital nationally for the third consecutive year

by The Leapfrog Group — an independent hospital watchdog organization — on December 17, 2019, highlighting its achievements in patient safety and quality. The Leapfrog Top Hospital awards are widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive honors American hospitals can receive.

Approximately 2,100 hospitals across the nation were considered for the award, and Children’s Hospital was one of only 10 children’s hospitals to be recognized

by The Leapfrog Group.

Scott Perryman, senior vice president and administrator for Children’s Hospital, said the receiving of the award was only

made possible through the efforts and commitment from the hospital’s staff.

“We are very honored to be again acknowledged as among the best children’s hospitals in the nation,” Perryman said. “We participate in numerous national quality and patient safety reporting efforts because we want to do better and be better for our babies, children, teens and their families.

Recognition for a third time in a row demonstrates that our collective work to establish a culture of safety and quality is taking hold in a transformative way.”

Additionally, three consecutive years is the longest streak for receiving the award — an honor held only by two hospitals, including Children’s Hospital.

SICKLE CELL PATIENT CURED THROUGH CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL’S FIRST STEM CELL TRANSPLANT Doctors at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital conducted the organization’s first stem cell transplant in a sickle cell disease patient, effectively curing 12-year-old Valeria Vargas-Olmedo of the inherited blood disease in early 2019.

Valeria had lived with sickle cell disease since birth. The disease causes a shortage of red blood cells, and thus an oxygen deficiency in one’s body. This can cause chronic pain and other serious complications, such as infection, acute chest syndrome and stroke. Without oxygen, any organ has a high likelihood of dying off.

Her family began seeking treatment last year after she became incapacitated, unable to continue daily activities such as attending school, getting into a car or even walking. Doctors said she had debilitating chronic pain, bone loss and bone necrosis.

Children’s Hospital doctors had worked for nearly a year to build a program focused on helping hematology patients, specifically

ones with hemophilia and sickle cell disease, like Valeria.

Akshat Jain, MD, a pediatric physician specializing in hematologic disorders at Children’s Hospital, said he is pleased with the outcome of the transplant and what it means for future patients suffering from sickle cell disease.

The procedure was also Children’s Hospital’s first haploidentical transplant, meaning the stem cells donated — by Valeria’s father — were only half a genomic match to her own stem cells. The transplant team infused the father’s cells directly into the patient after conditioning chemotherapy to replace the unhealthy blood-forming cells.

The Vargas-Olmedo family want to encourage others families who are struggling with sickle cell disease. “For the parents who see the news of this transplant and deal with this sickness, I hope they are encouraged and know that Children’s Hospital is a great hospital,” Clara Olmedo said. “There are many good doctors, professionals and excellent nurses. I encourage them to ask more questions about this procedure and our experience.

They’ve helped us tremendously, and we have our trust in them.”

Clara Olmedo, Valeria’s mother, said, “Firstly, we want to thank God. We also want to thank Dr. Jain and his entire transplant team. Finally, thanks to Valeria’s father — he did everything he could in order to save her life and give her health through being a donor. My daughter is much

A BATTLE WITH CANCER LEADS TO A SPARK OF INSPIRATION Former patient Blake Derksen came back to Children’s Hospital in 2019 to premier his stop-motion film for patients, staff and physicians. Created to bring hope to kids, the film tells the story of a pediatric patient diagnosed with cancer and was inspired by his own battle with cancer.

Blake was a typical 16-year-old high schooler entering the final stretch of his sophomore year when he began having severe pain in his legs — he just thought they were shin splints. But when he left school that day, he had no idea how much his life was about to change.

His MRI showed a tumor on his left shin, but a biopsy was needed to identify the tumor. What physicians at Children’s Hospital noticed was that something was eating away at Blake’s bone and soft tissue.

Days later, doctors diagnosed him with osteosarcoma, a common type of bone

cancer that occurs most often in teens. He would have to receive several months of inpatient, high-dose infusion treatments before major surgery on his leg.

While his diagnosis was daunting, Blake said he made peace with his condition. “At a certain point throughout this experience, I learned to just accept that life was going to be a little different for a while, and that was OK,” Blake said. “It was scary, but I had to have faith that I would get through it.”

Three months after his diagnosis, the surgery on Blake’s leg was a success — his tumor was removed, and his leg was strengthened with a rod and cadaver bone.

However, his journey was far from over — it was six more months of infusion therapy, being in and out of the hospital, fighting near-constant nausea and ongoing pain, and learning to walk again after not being able to put weight on his leg for eight months.

He said his nurses and physicians, including Dr. Antranik Bedros, who was division chief of hematology and oncology at Children’s Hospital at the time, made unit 4800 feel like

his home away from home. Through it all, Blake chose to remain positive and take the time to grow in other ways.

“I was aspiring to go to CalArts after high school and study animation,” Blake said.

“Being in the hospital for so long gave me the time to develop my art practices.”

Not only did Blake fulfill his dream of attending CalArts, he recently graduated and is now working in animation. He said his victory against osteosarcoma and his time at Children’s Hospital sparked his imagination to inspire others.

“Near the end of my treatment, I had the idea to create a stop-motion film about a pediatric patient diagnosed with cancer going through the same struggles I did and trying to find hope in that situation,” Blake said.

Blake said he wants to give others the same hope he found during his fight with cancer. “I don’t see life the same way anymore,” Blake said. “I’ve already stared death in the face.

Every day I wake up is a great day.”

BACK FROM THE BRINK OF DEATH AN INFANT’S STRUGGLE WITH A DEVASTATING DISEASE Gabriela Hernandez arrived at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital in critical condition. She was only three days old and suffering from necrotizing enterocolitis, or NEC, a devastating disease that affects the wall of the intestine, ultimately destroying it. This disease is the second leading cause of death in premature babies and the most common gastrointestinal disease of premature newborns.

She desperately needed emergency surgery, having NEC, pneumonia and an E. coli infection within her abdomen.

Andrei Radulescu, MD, pediatric surgeon at Children’s Hospital, met Gabriela’s parents at the hospital entrance. He was honest with them about the critical nature of her condition, explaining that while she would definitely die without the surgery, she might still die during or after surgery.

“Right before he took her into surgery, Dr. Radulescu asked me if I was okay,” Monique said. “I told him I was scared and stressing. He responded, ‘don’t do that, that’s my job now.’ As a mother, I can’t describe how much that meant to me.

I was losing my baby, but yet, I knew he would take care of her.”

further repair her intestines, she’s now at home with her family.

Gabriela made it through the surgery, though much of her large and small intestines had been removed. Yet, her recovery was only the beginning. She continued needing transfusions — platelet, blood and plasma. She was on morphine for the high pain she was experiencing. She had a colostomy placed during the surgery due to the intestine loss. She couldn’t breathe on her own.

Gabriela had never even been held by her mother or father. She spent almost three months in the NICU.

“It’s incredible to see how far she’s come,” Monique said. “I could never thank the hospital staff and Dr. Radulescu enough — I swear he’s an angel. The front desk staff, transport staff, nurses, child life specialists, surgeons — they brought my daughter back from the brink of death.”

One day, when Gabriela’s parents went to visit her, she was unrecognizable.

“She looked like a baby again, instead of this thing on death’s doorstep,” Monique said. “She was breathing on her own without a respirator, and that was the moment I finally knew she would be okay.”

Today, Gabriela is strong, alert and healthy.

While she will eventually need more surgeries to reverse the colostomy and

Radulescu has operated on hundreds of kids with NEC. He has studied the disease for the past 14 years, making it the focus of his life. Radulescu, with the support of Children’s Hospital, conducts extensive basic science research on NEC to find a cure. He is making strides in developing a prevention method for the devastating disease.

“My goal is to never operate on a child with NEC again,” Radulescu said. “For every patient that survives NEC, one dies.

I will remember those kids forever.

A DETERMINED MIND, A NEUROSURGEON’S TOUCH AND A SINGULAR GOAL Alexander “Al” Harris pushed himself up from his wheelchair and slowly but surely made his way across his high school graduation stage in June of 2019. The feat, 10 months after a serious spinal injury in a motocross accident, elicited a standing ovation from the crowd. His accomplishment came after months of physical therapy following an all-night surgery at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.

While walking the stage at your high school graduation is a common and momentous occasion for most, that moment wasn’t guaranteed for Harris after he broke his neck in the accident.

In August of 2018, Harris was at his professional motocross debut when in mid-jump his foot caught, tossing him off his bike and over the handlebars. Harris was no stranger to accidents, having sustained previous bike injuries. Except this time was different, he couldn’t feel anything.

Harris had shattered his C5 vertebra and was experiencing pressure on his spinal cord. He would need surgery immediately

if there was any hope for him to regain movement, let alone walk again.

Harris was transported to Children’s Hospital, where Tanya Minasian, DO, a pediatric neurosurgeon, performed the surgery.

“When you see an injury like Alex’s come in, that gut feeling is awful. You want to understand why this injury has happened to a seventeen-year-old,” Minasian said.

“Then, your mind kicks into the next gear: what are we going to do to give him his best chance? From that moment on, all I could think was to work quickly, efficiently and operate all night — do whatever it takes to save what I can.”

Before going into surgery, Minasian warned Alex’s family that the extent of the damage could leave Harris quadriplegic for the rest of his life, but she would do everything possible to save what she could.

The overnight surgery involved removing the shattered bone, relieving pressure on Harris’s spinal cord and inserting a titanium cage in place of the bone with a plate and screws.

“Ultimately, surgery is 50% of healing an injury like this,” Minasian said. “The other half is the hard work Alex had to put in to get here.”

For Harris, an essential part of the recovery process was setting goals. It helped him stay positive and gave him something to work toward — walking at graduation.

After surgery, Harris reached many milestones over the course of 10 months and daily physical therapies. During his first visit with Minasian two months following the surgery, he could lift his arms above his head. By March, he was walking in the clinic. “Everyone was crying in the clinic when we saw him walking,” Minasian recalled. “Tracking that kind of progress has been amazing to see.”

“The highlight of my year was attending Al’s graduation ceremony, at the request of Al and his parents, and cheering for him as he walked across the stage,” Minasian said.

K-FROG cares about LLU Children’s Hospital K-FROG has been a broad supporter of Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital for at least 19 years. Through various fundraisers, the Colton, California, based radio station has raised over $6.5 million in support of LLU Children’s Hospital patients and initiatives.

Their longest-running fundraiser has been the annual K-Froggers for Kids Radiothon, in partnership with Stater Bros. Charities, which features on-air patient testimonies and live interviews throughout the day. The event is supported by volunteers from Children’s Hospital, first responders and the community. The station held the 19th annual radiothon in December 2019, and funds raised benefit patients battling cancer, cardiac issues, trauma and other life threatening illnesses.

Also going 17 years strong is the K-FROG Cares Golf Tournament & Concert, another daylong event, consisting of a full day of golf and an evening benefit concert.

Most recently, K-FROG has joined LLU Children’s Hospital in their fight against COVID-19 by reaching out to their listeners for support. They also donated personal protective equipment for hospital staff and encouraged to their listeners to do the same.

K-FROG producer and afternoon radio host Heather Froglear is also an LLU Children’s Hospital Foundation Board Member and a true Champion for Children using her voice to advocate for patients at the hospital and to share the mission of LLU Children’s Hospital.

It’s the support of champions like K-FROG that allow Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital to keep the children in the community healing, healthy and happy.

K-FROG has also been bringing the music to the hospital through K-FROG Cares Acoustic Concerts for Patients. Country artists have visited and/or performed an acoustic set for patients. Some artists have also gone to patients’ bedside to play a song for a child who is unable to leave their room.

Artists that have visited have been Old Dominion, Kane Brown, Lindsay Ell, Jaida Dreyer and Katie Arminger.

K-FROG has also been the incredible voice for Children’s Hospital over the years, sharing various fundraising events with their listeners. They’ve also hosted

THE A. GARY ANDERSON FAMILY ENDOWMENT Carrying out Mr. Anderson’s legacy to meet community needs, the A. Gary Anderson Family Foundation has generously funded the A. Gary Anderson Playroom at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. This playroom affords young patients the opportunity to interact with others and to enjoy diversionary play under the caring supervision of child life specialists.

THE JERRY L. AND SHIRLEY N. PETTIS FAMILY RESEARCH AND OPERATING ENDOWMENT The Pettis Family Endowment provides funds for pediatric hematology and oncology research and clinical care at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. In recognition of their generous contribution, the pediatric hematology/ oncology and stem cell transplant wing of Children’s Hospital was named in their honor in 2005.

THE KEN RAMIREZ FAMILY ENDOWMENT The Ramirez family is dedicated to the eradication of childhood diabetes. This endowment was founded by Ken Ramirez and is supported by members of the extended Ramirez family. Annual proceeds support treatment and education provided to Inland Empire children by the Pediatric Diabetes Center at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.

THE JAMES W. TOTMAN PEDIATRIC CANCER RESEARCH ENDOWMENT A longtime resident of the Inland Empire, James W. Totman established a trust that provides an endowment for ongoing pediatric cancer research at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.

THE CORAL AND RICHARD TEGLEY MEMORIAL ENDOWED EDUCATION FUND In remembrance of his wife, a longstanding member of the pediatric critical care nursing team at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, Richard Tegley established this fund to provide greater knowledge to other critical care nurses through educational conference opportunities.

SHAWNEE’S SMILE Tommy and Maria Ramos were inspired by their youngest daughter, Shawnee, to establish a resource at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital to help families of children born with a cleft palate or cleft lip.

WOOLLEY-PETTIS ENDOWED CHAIR FOR PEDIATRIC RESEARCH The Big Hearts for Little Hearts Desert Guild launched the Woolley-Pettis Endowed Chair to support pediatric research and teaching at LLU Children’s Health in honor of E. Jane Woolley, MD, and The Honorable Shirley N. Pettis-Thompson: two visionary women who established the Desert Guild through their passion and desire to help children.

by Rowena’s son, Ken Ramirez, and her parents, Raoul and Martha Chacon.

BIG HEARTS

FOR

LITTLE HEARTS GUILDS LLU Children’s Hospital Foundation is privileged to have an association of volunteer guilds whose events and activities raise funds and bring awareness to help meet healthcare needs of community children.

In addition, Guild members help brighten the lives of hospitalized children through fun patient diversionary activities. Together, the Desert Guild, Loma Linda Guild, Riverside and Temecula-Murrieta Valley Guild include more than 60 plus board members and 455 members from across the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley.

During their 2019-2020 season, Big Hearts for Little Hearts Guilds hosted 25 fundraising events, 15 patient diversionary events and collectively raised more than $465,000 to ensure critical medical care for the sick children at LLU Children’s Hospital.
