Voters head to the polls Oct. 19

It’s almost time for voters to cast their ballots in the 2015 federal election. On Oct. 19 it will be decided which party will run this country’s government so the Lloydminster Source caught up with Elections Canada to get some details on how the people can get their voices heard.

“For voter ID, if you have a driver’s licence with your current address on it you’re good to go, otherwise you need two pieces of ID, one with your name and at least one of the two has to have your address,” said Marie-France Kenny, regional media advisor for Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

“For example, and the list is at elections.ca, you can have your health card and a utility bill, which would have your name and address. So that’s what you would need to vote. There are other options as well, if you don’t have proof of address you can

sign a note and have someone from your polling division sign a note for you, saying they know you live at this address.”

New Canadians can also use their citizen card as a form of identification. For First Nations residents

who don’t have a civic address, they can get a letter of confirmation of residence from their band authority or reserve authority, which can also be downloaded. According to elections.ca, it is also possible to register at the polling station on voting day but it is recommended to have already registered because it’s faster and easier.

In the city, Battlefords-Lloydminster residents can vote on Oct. 19 from 7:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. at St. John Anglican Church, 4709 49 Ave. Lakeland residents can vote on Oct. 19 from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Servus Sports Centre, 5209 12 St. Advance Polls According to media reports, Elections Canada says 3.6 million people voted in the advance polls, which were open across the country from Oct. 9 to 13.

That is a 71 per cent increase from advance polling numbers in 2011.

Candidates discuss Canadian veterans

Veterans issues were among the topics debated

by Battlefords-Lloydminster candidates at last week’s all candidates forum, which was held by the Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce at the Centennial Civic Centre.

The topic of veterans issues appeared to have unanimous priority among the potential representatives, though half of the candidates took issue with the Conservatives work on the subject to date.

“We don’t give veterans very much money,” said Liberal candidate Larry Ingram. “In fact, we closed nine of their buildings that they call offices.

We don’t do very much at all for our veterans of war and I really believe we should be. And I think we should quit giving so much money to the big corporations that really don’t give a care about us.”

NDP candidate Glenn Tait had a more pointed criticism, specifically outing the federal Conservative leader’s rapport with Canadian veterans themselves.

“There is a reason that Stephen Harper can’t get a photo op with a veteran,” he said. “The New Democratic Party wants to return the veterans benefits. If somebody is going to put their life on the line, risking getting shot and blown up because we tell them to go out there and risk getting shot and blown up, they demand our respect. Demand

our support. We’ve got to take care of them when they come home.”

Gerry Ritz, Conservative candidate, started by agreeing with his opponents’ views on the aid veterans should receive, then followed up with examples of how the Conservatives have helped with veterans affairs since their time in office.

Among the examples he said that, as a government, they have put over $5 billion into the veterans package.

“There is a lot of discussion out there as to whether that’s hitting the right target or not and those discussions continue but we have enhanced the Veterans Charter,” said Ritz.

“We’ve increased the funeral benefits as our World War 2 vets die, doubled it to some $7,600, and we continue to add to mental health to agent orange veterans. All those different things need to be addressed. There is a lot more work to be done.”

Independent candidate Doug Anguish expressed his support for the troops and said even more needs to be done to help with the mental health of veterans when they return home.

“I’m a supporter of the military. We need to support our veterans when they come back home from the area of conflict. Post traumatic stress disorder and all the issues that come with that need to be addressed. Those are people who protect our freedom and our democratic way of living in Canada and they deserve every respect.”

Lakeland candidates debate refugee crisis

An issue that has been making national headlines also got some attention at the all candidates forum for the Lakeland riding last week. The issue in question involved the Syrian refugee crisis, as Lakeland residents wanted to know how each party would respond to the influx of people looking to find shelter in Canada.

“First off, Canada has always accepted refugees,” said Gary Parenteau, Liberal candidate. “Historically our community, our country, has been a mosaic of many cultures and those many cultures built a strong Canada and are still building it today. Canada is known and prides itself as a country with a diverse background and diverse ethnic groups of people.”

Parenteau said the Syrian crisis is similar to many other refugee crises that have happened in the past and his party would do anything within its resources to help the refugees in a timely and efficient manner. He said that despite what some may think, the Liberal party would use a screening process that would be adequate enough to ensure Canada’s safety.

NDP candidate Duane Zaraska also used the time to clear up some misconceptions voters may have had about his party’s refugee stance. He insisted that there would be a screening process, but also opportunities for temporary foreign workers to become citizens.

“On the policy of immigration, I think the NDP is committed to extending programs that prepare immigrants before they arrive,” he said. “Canada will respond to the best of its ability to refugees. We are open to 10,000 refugees in the next year and 9,000 a year (after).”

Robert McFadzean, who represents Lakeland’s Libertarian voice in this election, said that refugees should be sponsored by people in the private sector who have the means and the desire to do so.

“We have people in our country that are struggling,” said McFadzean.

“They should not have to support refugees by their taxes. And there should be screening for refugees the same as anyone else coming into our country.”

Conservative candidate Shannon Stubbs said her party’s plan is to accept 10,000 Syrian refugees over the next three years, making sure the process is “careful, diligent and ensures the safety of all Canadians.” The plan is also to ensure Canada is accepting the most vulnerable refugees who are looking for safety within our borders.

“By the new year we had already accepted 1,100 from Syria and there’s also a goal of 3,000 from Iraq by the end of the year, but this issue is multi-pronged,” Stubbs said. “That’s why we need to continue the military campaign against ISIS to stop them there and ensure our own security as well as providing humanitarian aid.”

Ritz supports new partnership

According to a post from Oct. 5 on www.international.gc.ca the Government of Canada announced that members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) have concluded negotiations on a free trade agreement.

“This is a partnership of 12 countries that rely on trade to make sure their own economies are strong, as well as rely on that trade from other countries to backstop the shortfalls we have in our country,” said Gerry Ritz, Conservative candidate for Battlefords-Lloydminster. “I would point to the seasonality when it comes to a lot of produce that we would rely on a lot of other countries, say in the southern hemisphere, for the offset.

“So there’s a lot of strength of economies by relying on someone else’s strength.”

This offers more diversity of markets, rather than just trading across provincial borders. As for the Lloydminster area specifically, he says the benefits will also be positive.

Being on both sides of the Saskatchewan-Alberta border, Ritz says that the area is both resource wealthy and exceptional with agriculture.

“When you look at major processors like ADM (Agri-Industries Co), there’s a huge market for canola, biodiesel. When you look at Heartland Livestock, some of the smaller abattoirs around like Diamond 7 meats, of course they don’t export to that level, but when someone else exports that means there’s a bigger demand for what Robert Lundqvist and his crew do at Diamond 7 right here locally,” said Ritz. “So grains, oilseeds, pork ... are all going to gain exponentially having access to 800 million consumers.”

Agriculture especially has been proven a big winner in any of the trade deals that have been done over the years, according to Ritz. An example he gives is the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), in which he says agriculture has done much better than what anybody thought it would.

Ritz, who was the federal agriculture minister prior to the election being called, says Canada produces between 50 and 90 per cent more than what the country can consume of any given commodity, so that excess needs a place to go. Deals such as the TPP make it easier for this extra product to find a place to go.

The 12 countries involved in the TPP are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the U.S. and Vietnam.

Of these, Ritz figures the country with highest demand for commodities that might come out of Lloydminster would, other than the U.S., likely be Japan.

“They’re a premium market, especially when it comes to our pork and beef sector, our grains, our barleys, wheats, our canola and so on, they’re a major buyer and in a number of trips that I’ve made to Japan they constantly comment on the quality and consistency of supply that we can give them.”

Foodies can add the new Rock Creek Tap and Grill restaurant and lounge in Lloydminster to their list of local culinary experiences.

The franchise establishment located in the Hampton Square at the west side of the city officially opened to the public on Oct. 13 at 4 p.m.

Managing partner Jim Spenrath described the upscale Rock Creek food fare during a pre-opening week invitational lunch held to test staff and equipment.

“The menu has a southwestern feel to it with lots of bold flavours. I think

bold is the right word to use,” said Spenrath.

“There’s a Cajun presence in some of our dishes, an Asian presence in some of our dishes – certainly something for everybody.

“We have a good steak program, lots of pastas, but lots of strong flavours.”

This Source reviewer was treated to a delicious free hickory BBQ chicken burger with the order taken by a friendly, helpful server.

The trial period also included an invitational dinner to help generate a positive buzz for this week’s opening.

Rotary brings the Halloween fun

For the second year in a row, the Servus Sports Centre will be a fun and safe place for the whole family to celebrate Halloween.

The Rotary Club of Lloydminster, the Rotary of Lloydminster Border City and the City of Lloydminster are teaming up to present the second annual Halloween Family Fun Night.

Fun night activities will take place in the Synergy Field House from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. during Halloween Eve on Oct. 31 with free admission for everyone.

According to lead organizer Wayde Blythe, president of the Rotary Club of Lloydminster, staging the event again was a no-brainer based on the feedback from the first one.

“We just had such a fantastic turnout last year and the community just loved it,” said Blythe. “The comments we got that night as we were walking around were just so positive.”

Blythe expects there will be an even larger turnout this year with Halloween being on a Saturday.

“We’re definitely thinking it’s going to go up in numbers this year ,just from the fact people were talking to each other last year. We have a little better advertising out there as well,” he said.

The event is also well sponsored by local businesses and individuals, namely Servus Credit Union, Les Harper, Home Hardware, Water World and the City of Lloydminster.

This year’s planned fun stuff includes a 40-foot inflatable obstacle course, all kinds of bounce castles and games and crafts galore.

There will also be a Velcro sticky wall, a 32-foot rock climbing wall and Sumo suit wrestling to boot.

“We are still working on some new ideas. The big thing is the bouncy castle things for the kids. They love that,” said Blythe. “I think the parents just love having that to take their kids to.”

The idea of providing kids and adults with a nice safe atmosphere after trick or treating door-to-door led to the family night get together.

“This way the kids can get out and have some fun for the evening and they are not wandering the streets and that sort of thing,” said Blythe.

The event is also fun for adults with many grownups expected to don costumes to keep in step with their kids. There will be prizes for best costumes.

“Last year there was almost as many adults dressed up in costumes as there were kids,” said Blythe, who joked he’ll likely be dressed as the rotary president that he is.

Volunteers from both local rotary clubs will supervise the event and hand out candy bags to kids as they leave.

“We don’t want to give them out when they come in because you have a real mess on the floor,” said Blythe with memory of last year’s clean up in mind.

“We’ll set the candy bag area up in the mezzanine area this year.”

A few years back I received an email from a reader concerned about something in our coverage. I don’t remember what the issue was, but it ended with, to paraphrase, “It was time Lloydminster media stopped using the fact that its employees are entry level and start to work like bigger centres.” No single line has better illustrated what sitting in this chair is like.

In many ways, the reader made perfect sense. After all, I have no doubt everyone who works in the industry in any market aims to put out the best product possible for the community. For those of us who have been around for more than a pitstop here, there is likely a common barrier with the reader’s message: reality. I have had the opportunity to work with a lot of incredibly talented young people, many of whom go onto great careers – but they are cutting their teeth here – it’s not an excuse, it just is. That’s without taking into account the evolving online and social media aspect that will be the future of this industry. In the words of Slim Charles, “Game the same. Just got more fierce.”

Which brings me to the best part of my job. Nothing has been more rewarding than having a green reporter come in. For most it’s their first real job out school, and within a couple of years they have media outlets or other organizations offering them a step up in their careers because of the work they have done here.

In the 10 years I have been here I was fortunate to see many move on to careers as editors, daily newspaper reporters, communications specialists and into different career paths they had more of a passion for. Getting to know co-workers and seeing the work they put in and give to the readers has always been the single best part of

the job – bar none.

This issue will be my last having that privilege.

It’s been a whirlwind 10 years at The Source, beginning on a sports beat that had no foundation because I arrived a month after the first edition of the paper hit the streets.

It’s been an experience that has covered every range of emotion possible and given me a vast array of experience I will draw on every day going forward. I have been fortunate to work with some of the best co-workers anyone could ask for and they established the Source in this crazy busy community. I know those who remain will continue to build on our first decade.

It’s hard to wrap your mind around being somewhere for what is nearing 1,000 issues, and maybe even more difficult to comprehend given the instability in this department. Like with most small-town newsrooms, I am pushing 40 hires as I sail off into the sunset. Those are only numbers, of course. From making lifelong friends amongst co-workers to the contacts on the various beats and the people who honour you by allowing you to tell their story, it’s the people who have made this job truly special.

I can’t thank Reid and Clark enough for the opportunities they have given me and the trust they showed. Or Jillian and Deanna for their support along the way as my role in the company evolved. To the reporters who have worked so hard over the years, I can’t be anymore grateful. And the staff that I have worked alongside and the freelancers who assisted with content, the dedication to the product has not gone unnoticed. I also have to make a shoutout to Katie for being so supportive and to my two most avid column readers, Grandpa and Monster, for making sure every piece was read by someone.

Thank you to the readers who have picked up this paper twice a week, it’s been a lot of fun. Now on this page, you can probably expect fewer references from The Wire, fantasy football talk and crying about the Oilers. I truly hope the next stop for me is close to as enjoyable as this one has been.

“We’ve had a whole bunch of special guests already. People are loving the food. They love the service,” said Spenrath on Oct. 9.

He said what’s been missing from the Lloydminster dining scene is a Rock Creek.

“A number of our customers had experienced Rock Creek somewhere in Saskatoon or Regina or in Moose Jaw and are thrilled that we are here,” he said.

“We’re hearing that people are happy to find a place that’s got a strong menu, with a real nice atmosphere and that’s what we are providing.”

The popular restaurant opened with a well prepared staff of 58.

“We’ve been training the back-ofhouse staff for almost two weeks now and the front-of-house staff for the last 10 days,” said Spenrath.

“We’ve been having people in for the last two or three days by invitation in limited numbers so we could test the kitchen and test the serving staff.

“We’ve been increasing the numbers every day to simulate an actual evening service and dinner service.”

The Lloydminster franchise is the seventh in the chain that was founded in 2006 in Regina that now has two locations.

There are also three outlets in Saskatoon and one in Moose Jaw

with a strong following at all of them by customers from 20 to 50 years of age who like the atmosphere.

“It’s upscale casual, so our guests come here and certainly they are here to enjoy themselves,” said Spenrath.

“It’s a place where you’ll have room ambience, but still have the ability to have a conversation.”

The Lloydminster restaurant seats 90 people on the dining room side and about 80 in the sports lounge that is equipped with TV monitors tuned to the hot sport of the day.

There will also be an outdoor patio set up in the spring and breakfast will available at 10 a.m. on Sundays beginning in the new year.

Spenrath expects it will be crazy busy in the early going but he noted,”That’s why we’re here.

“We’re looking forward to the people. We love our guests and we’re anticipating we’re going to have good crowds.”

Spenrath was the former chief operating officer of Grit Industries in North Battleford and has restaurant DNA from his early business association with his Lloydminster operating partner Gary Young.

“I worked in a restaurant for five years when I was a young person.

In fact, I worked for my current partner Gary Young,” explained Spenrath.

“So him and I have kind of gone full circle business-wise from my early days in the restaurant working for him to him being my partner in the current operation.”

The restaurant address is 8120 44 St. in what Spenrath describes as an ideal location.

“We’re finding that the west side of Lloydminster has a significant population, a large commercial sector and being directly from the hotel is something their guests are looking forward to as well,” he said.

Spenrath noted the downturn in the oilpatch has made it easier to attract experienced staff looking for long-term employment.

“When we were recruiting we were fortunate to find just a large number of experienced people that fit the Rock Creek mold. They’re upbeat bubbly, friendly professional servers,” he said.

Kids Help Phone launches new support ‘zone’ to improve teen guys’ mental health Teenage guys engage in high-risk behaviours and die by suicide more frequently than young women. Kids Help Phone, with generous funding support from the Movember Foundation, launched BroTalk (www.brotalk.ca), a dedicated online support zone and referral service that provides teen guys aged 14 to 18 with somewhere to reach out to when times are tough.

As Canada’s only national helpline for young people, Kids Help Phone recognized the need to create a resource specifically for teen guys to address the fact that the young men who reach out for counselling are 31 per cent less likely to discuss mental and emotional health issues than girls, and 36 per cent less likely to talk about suicide and suicide related issues.

Sask. land sales down

What a difference a year makes in the Saskatchewan oilpatch.

The recent October sale of petroleum and natural gas rights generated just $9.8 million in revenue for that province compared to $21.6 million from the same sale a year ago when oil prices were much higher.

After five sales in 2015, land sale revenues totalled $45.5 million compared to $179.6 million in October 2014.

According to statistics from the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, 2014 ended with a total of 11,226 wells drilled compared to the current 2015 projected total of just 5,531 wells across in Canada.

Despite the slump in drilling and land sales revenue, Economy Minister Bill Boyd put an optimistic spin on the news with one sale left on Dec. 1.

“The long-term viability of Saskatchewan’s oilpatch relies on new discoveries,” said Boyd.

“The province is cautiously optimistic that exploration activities on the lands acquired will prove successful.”

The Lloydminster area was next at $1.8 million, followed by the Kindersley-Kerrobert area at $1.0 million and the Swift Current area at $357,844.

The top purchaser of acreage in the Lloydminster area was Triple Polar Energy Ltd., that spent $826,350 to acquire five lease parcels.

The highest price paid for a single parcel in the province was $832,355.

Triland Energy Inc. acquired the 259-hectare lease west of Willmar.

The highest price on a per-hectare basis was $10,045.

Scott Land & Lease Ltd. bid $650,449 for a 64.75-hectare lease east of Stoughton.

Here are a few tips to make sure your next meatball recipe is a sure success: • Chill your ingredients – keep the ingredients cold because you do not want fats in the meat to break down before you start cooking • Types of ground meat – go to your local butcher or grind your own and try an upgraded version of your everyday ground meat. Ask about combinations such as brisket, sirloin, short rib or chuck.

• Basic ingredients – do not skimp on the egg or breadcrumbs as those literally will hold the meatballs together, but it is important to follow the exact amount in a recipe.

• Tools-using your hands (not s spoon!=) as the main tool is important as you do not want to form the meatballs too tight, this can make the meatballs tough.

• Frying is out. Do not fry your meatballs; simply bake them in the oven. The days of scrubbing your oven from all the splattering is done, either use a muffin tin or line the meatballs on a baking sheet.

Even if a recipe still suggest frying the meatballs in a skillet (such as the recipe of the week), remember you can just simply bake them.

Remember you want the texture of the meatball to soft and light, not dense and chewy. Enjoy this delicious comfort food this fall.

Recipe of the week Hoisin Whiskey Glazed Meatballs Recipe courtesy of CanolaInfo (www.canolainfo.org) Ingredients 8 oz ground turkey 250 g 1/3 cup quick cooking oats 75 mL 1/3 cup finely chopped green onion (green and white parts) 75 mL 1 medium jalapeno chili pepper, finely chopped (with seeds) 2 egg whites 1/4 tsp coarsely ground black pepper 1 mL 2 Tbsp canola oil 30 mL Glaze 2 Tbsp hoisin sauce 30 mL 2 Tbsp Bourbon or Canadian whiskey 30 mL 2 tsp packed brown sugar substitute blend 10 mL Instructions 1. In medium bowl, combine turkey, oats, green onion, chili pepper, egg whites, pepper and 1 Tbsp (15 mL) of canola oil and shape into 24 small meatballs (about 1 Tbsp/15 mL each).

2. Heat 1 Tbsp (15 mL) canola oil in large, nonstick skillet over medium heat.

Cook meatballs 6 minutes or until no longer pink in center, turning frequently.

3. Meanwhile, in small bowl, stir together hoisin sauce, bourbon and sugar substitute.

4. Pour hoisin mixture over meatballs in skillet and cook 15 seconds, stirring gently until well coated. Serve with wooden picks.

Cook’s note: For better control, use two utensils, such as a fork and a spoon, to turn the meatballs easily.

Talent alone won’t bring Rustlers to nationals

Poor conditioning in training camp left plenty of Lakeland Rustlers on the sidelines for most of the preseason, as the women’s basketball team has had to deal with early season injuries, leaving them with sometimes six players in exhibition games.

It has meant that the Rustlers have not got a lot of full team game action or practice leading up to opening weekend, so it leaves a few question marks as the women’s team heads to what head coach Chris King called, the toughest gym to play in in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) in Augustana.

“We are not anywhere where we want to be,” said King. “At the same point, we have a lot of talent and I know the girls are going to play

Lakeland putting focus on ACAC Championships in March to ensure they reach national tournament hard. Augustana is a very gritty team and are no pushovers. We will be in for a tough matchup and hopefully we stay healthy and don’t get any further injuries.”

While there is some disappointment in the conditioning that many players arrived to camp in, for King it only matters how the Rustlers are playing come early March when they host the ACAC championship tournament. As hosts, Lakeland receives a free entry into the tournament, regardless of where they finish in the

North Division standings. So wins and losses, while still important as a marker of success, isn’t what King will be watching for this season as Lakeland makes their way towards the provincial tournament.

“It does give us a lot of things to work on in this first semester,” said King.

“I’m looking at it as more of a, trying to figure out who we are and what is going to work for us, not so much the win or loss record. We are looking at more development than

anything else.”

Last season Lakeland went 22-2 in division play, winning plenty of games on talent alone, despite making multiple mistakes during games. It was the benefit of having such a talented group of women all together, as the Rustlers could afford to make mistakes and still come out on top. However, after narrowly scraping by St. Mary’s College in the opening round of the ACAC championships, winning 66-56, Lakeland lost to the SAIT Trojans, 64-43, after committing multiple turnovers and missing many critical shots, eliminating any chance they would make a trip to nationals.

They would lose in the bronze medal game to Olds College, 72-50, settling for a fourth place finish, despite being arguably, the best team in the league.

Focused on what they can control

The list of unknowns is staggering for Lakeland’s men’s basketball team.

With only two returning players with one year of experience under their belts in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), the Rustlers will head into this weekend’s opening home-and-home with the Augustana Vikings knowing very little about themselves in regular season game situations, and even less about their opponent.

It’s what happens when your roster and coaching staff received the clean slate treatment over the summer, as new head coach Sheray Thomas, who spent the last two seasons as the assistant to Tom Groat, heads into his first year as bench boss at Lakeland, while many of his players and starters will experience their first college basketball game Friday night at Augustana College.

“There is still a lot of things to adjust to and make crisp, but at the same time we are making strides,” said Thomas. “We are more familiar with the plays, the defence and each other. There is still a lot to work on, but at this moment, things are a little bit better.”

While a lineup full of new players, it means no school in the ACAC knows what the Rustlers are capable of. It works the same way the other way around, as Lakeland’s two returning players were not starters last year and didn’t see a lot of action. So at least for the first half of the season, until they get a second look at teams in the winter semester, the Rustlers are going in blind, knowing limited information about their match-ups, who is a returning veteran and which players they need to target.

With the ACAC being a physically demanding conference to play in with a long schedule that spans both semesters, it will also mean Lakeland is behind in terms of preparedness heading into the season, as only two players really know what they are going up against this season.

“We really don’t know much about

other teams and they don’t know much about us, so we might surprise teams,” said Thomas. “At the same time, other teams have more of a handle on the league and on their team with veterans.”

With such little knowledge of their surroundings in the ACAC, Lakeland’s approach this season is just to focus on themselves and the things they can control. Thomas is certain he has players that are talented enough to make positive strides in the ACAC, and if the Rustlers put the spotlight on their own offence and defence, Thomas believes the rest will just work itself out over the course of the season.

“We have the players that can do a lot of positives in this league if we just buckle down and focus on us,” said Thomas. “If we focus on our offence and our defence, then the rest will come. I don’t think too much about what the rest of the teams are doing.

“It’s pretty much perfecting what we are doing.”

Friday night, Lakeland starts in Augustana before returning home to play the Vikings Saturday night.

Last season, the Rustlers swept the Vikings in all four games they played, but with so few pieces from last season remaining, looking at that record as an indicator of what Lakeland can do this year doesn’t hold much weight. What Thomas does take out of last year’s 14-10 record is that the Rustlers started slow, winning only two of their first eight games, before piecing together a positive season and making the provincial tournament.

So while Thomas believes a fast start would be a great confidence boost in the early goings, even if the Rustlers start slow there is still plenty of season to make up ground in the North Division. Though he would rather be in front of the pack, rather than coming up behind.

“You never want to play catch-up, you want to start of winning,” said Thomas. “I’d rather win in the beginning than play catch-up if possible.”

Exceptional start to hockey season

Across the Lloydminster hockey landscape, teams are enjoying plenty of early season success in the Border City, as all five AAA hockey clubs are in the top portion of the standings, if not in first place in their division.

Combined, the Lloydminster Bobcats (midget), Rage (minor midget), Heat (bantam), Steelers (female midget) and Ice Cats (female bantam) have a record of 17-2-1 through the first opening weeks of the season, while the three male teams have yet to lose in regulation.

The Lloydminster Bobcats have only allowed one goal in each of their four victories in the Alberta Midget Hockey League, with three of their wins coming on the road. The midget ‘Cats will be home this weekend for a pair of games, as they take on the Calgary Royals on Saturday, followed by the Maple Leaf Athletic Club on Sunday.

With 13 goals in their last two games, the Lloydminster Rage are rolling along to open the season, starting 3-0-0. Forward Orrin Centazzo leads the team with eight goals in three games, which is tied for the league lead in goals in the Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League. The Rage are in Edmonton on Saturday before returning home Sunday to play the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers.

A 5-0-1 start by the Lloydminster Heat brings them back to a similar start they had in 2013, when the team went on win the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League championship, en route to a silver medal as the Western Canadian Bantam Championship. With 27 goals for, the Heat are tops in their division and have already built up a seven point lead on second place Fort Saskatchewan Rangers.

The Heat are in Grande Prairie this weekend for two games.

After a disappointing season last year, the Lloydminster Steelers have got off to a quick start with a 2-1 record, dropping their first game of the season last weekend against the Edmonton Thunder. The Steelers, however, have only allowed four goals this season, holding their first weekend opponents to one goal each, which included the Thunder. The Steelers have a triple-header weekend, as they are in Rocky Mountain on Friday and Calgary on Saturday before returning to Lloydminster on Sunday to play the St. Albert Slash.

With a 3-1-0 start, the Lloydminster Ice Cats are second in their division through the first two weekends of the season. Trying to get back on top

There is still time for the Lakeland Rustlers men’s soccer team to grow as players and in the standings, but they will have to overcome their inconsistencies quickly if they want to secure a spot in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) championships.

After splitting the opening weekend of the season back in September with a win and loss, Lakeland began a five game swing on the road, which started out with a 3-2 loss to the Red Deer Kings. They would rebound with two straight victories over Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, before dropping a 5-0 decision to SAIT. Lakeland would end the road portion of their schedule with a 9-0 victory over Olds College, and now return back to VLA Fields for the first time since Sept. 13.

“Inconsistent still,” said head coach Kevin Wagner of the men’s play during the five-game road trip. “We need to try and string 90 minutes together with efficient goalkeeping, attacking and defensive play.”

Lakeland came into the season with high expectations. As the bronze medalists from last season, they were looking to repeat as the dominant team in the ACAC South Division.

But what they found out was that it was more difficult to stay on top than it is to get there.

Last season, Lakeland had All-Canadian Stefan Cukovic leading the team with 14 goals in 10 games, and took advantage of his unknown status in the ACAC. This year, however, the ACAC knows what he brings to the pitch, and while he still has nine goals in seven games, teams are focusing in on his strengths to limit his opportunities.

“It is more difficult to stay on top than it is to get there,” said Wagner. “The group is an enjoyable group to work with and enjoyable group to coach, team chemistry is good and everything on that side of things is very positive. We are just inconsistent.”

This weekend, Lakeland hosts the

Red Deer Kings, who sit behind the Rustlers in the standings with a 3-4-0 record. With a 4-3-0 record, Lakeland isn’t thinking of dropping down in the standings, but rather are looking up, as Leth-

bridge is three points in front of them for second, and they meet next week in the final weekend of the season.

It means this weekend is a must win game against the Kings, as Lethbridge

takes on the division leading SAIT Trojans on Sunday, so Lakeland could be in striking distance to leap Lethbridge on Oct. 24 when they play each other.

While the Rustlers lost to the Kings earlier in

the season, Wagner said the team should have success this weekend, it will just come down to the finer details in their play.

“If the players have a good week of training it is an opportunity

for three points,” said Wagner. “I think we can get second still. We need three wins, but there is no reason why we can’t beat them at home. The telling point will be the SAIT and Lethbridge game.”

Winning on talent alone is something that will happen again this season, as Lakeland’s roster didn’t lose too much from last year, while they gained some exceptionally talented players. But King said he expects the Rustlers will have to grind out a few more victories over the schedule, especially against the NAIT Ooks, who will be one of the top teams in the country, which will ultimately play into Lakeland’s favour as they get ready to host the best in the province.

“We are going to win a lot of games on talent again, but we will have to grind a few out which will be good for the team to face adversity,” said King.

“Hopefully that makes us strong when it comes down to playoffs. We get to play the strongest team in the league four times, so that only benefits us.”

Like every season, the ultimate goal is to go to nationals and compete for a Canadian championship. This year is no different and King is not into this level of athletics just to say he tried. With an entry already guaranteed to the ACAC championships, King is approaching this season differently than last year. He doesn’t care who Lakeland plays in playoffs, just as long as they are playing good basketball. Lakeland’s women’s soccer team has only won a single game all season, but will need to win the rest of the way in order to earn a playoff spot.

And while that is already challenging in itself, they will have to do it against the top three teams in the division, starting with the first place Red Deer Queens (5-0-2) on Saturday.

The Rustlers opened the season with a 1-0 victory over SAIT, but it was a disappointing nil-nil draw against the Trojans on Oct. 3 and a 1-1 draw against the Olds Broncos on Oct. 4 that could spell the end of the Rustlers’ season.

Those were two games head coach Kevin Wagner believed the Rustlers should have earned three points in each, and currently, with a 1-1-5 record and eight points in the standings, adding four extra points would have put the Rustlers in second place, rather than fourth heading into their final three games.

“When we played Olds and SAIT, it was a weekend we should have had six points (but) we ended up with two,” said Wagner. “We missed a penalty shot against SAIT and Olds was a team that was waiting for us to beat them and we couldn’t.

Very disappointing and it just showed our lack of experience and we paid dearly for that.

“With that error, it makes it much more difficult. We only got one win and now we got to finish with two wins.”

For Wagner, it all comes down to opportunity, or rather, the opportunities the Rustlers are missing.

Lakeland has missed plenty of scoring opportunities that could have changed their entire season around. With five draws, it is easy to see how the Rustlers could have picked up three points rather than one, and how Lakeland could be in the top part of the South Division, rather than fighting to move up from the middle spot.

Starting over MIDWEST MINUTE

We moved back from Edmonton to the farm outside of Maidstone in 1979, with young boys in tow, one two years old, the other two weeks. I had grown up in the old one storey house built by my grandparents in 1917 with various additions and deletions to it over the years. Frankly the building was long past its due date with the floor sinking into the dirt cellar underneath and straw filled walls, cold in winter and full of mice racetracks. Our toddler survived crawling on the -2 C kitchen linoleum that winter but we knew that a new house had to be a priority.

As it turned out, moving into the new place in November 1980 coincided with an escalating mortgage rate that topped out at 21.75 per cent. If it hadn’t been for the provincial government stepping up with a subsidy program that effectively brought our interest rate down to seven per cent I am not sure if we could have been able to keep the place for very long.

We paid off that mortgage 25 years later with a barn dance attended by family and friends ostensibly celebrating 100 years of continuous ownership of the farm, but for me it also meant that we now could relax a bit knowing our home was safe from outside financial pressure. My generation was taught

by our parents who had lived through the Depression to pay off your home and never take it back into debt That feeling didn’t last long as within three years my youngest son, the toddler now turned ranch manager, lost his nearby home and all worldly belongings to fire. Since the 1980 house was in the centre of the operation it only made sense that he take over primary residence. One problem; this left my wife and I homeless. A decision had to be made. Start over or move on?

We decided to build a house designed to grow old in. So from the ashes of the fire a new home arose. This one cost us five times per square foot what the previous one did. One saving grace was the low interest rate but still a mortgage was required which also meant that retirement would be substantially delayed. So be it, I can’t take it with me anyway. There are no luggage racks on a hearse.

I have stated before in this column that over half of our group’s real estate practice results from relationship breakdown, death, or other tragic life events.

Time and again we see clients who have lost almost everything and need to start over again. After the hurt passes, we see them gradually progress. It may not be the same standard of housing initially that they left, but it serves.

Often after a few years they are back to where they were, although somewhat poorer in the bank account but wiser for the experience.

Point is, a house is only a structure that life and love turns into a home. Our first build on the farm served our family very well at the time and it appears to be doing the same for our son and granddaughter. Do I miss it?
