C

arnival Fun for Everyone” is the theme for the 78th annual Colusa County Fair. The theme is a reminder that this is one of the biggest family-oriented celebrations each year in Colusa County.

This year is no different. The Colusa County Fair Board, my staff, and I have laid plans for a great fair.

We’ve made some changes to our entertainment line up this year, and we are happy to say we will have a great selection of performers on three stages.

We also have some great ground acts, and ongoing activities at Kid’s World.

One act I am particularly excited about is Cello Joe. This guy is amazing.

He is a singing, rapping, beat-boxing, cello player. You have to check him out.

Other entertainment include Chad Bushnell, Dave Russell, and a reggae/ funk group The Elovaters.

Some additions to this year’s fair includes a bartending competition, a new clown, a solar cowboy train, and monster trucks.

Emily Nicole Johnson, 11, is the daughter of Gaby Duarte and Michael Johnson. She has two brothers and lives in Williams.

Emily is in the sixth grade at Egling Middle School in Colusa, where she is on the Principal’s Honor Roll. She enjoys drawing, playing basketball and softball, cheerleading, making music videos and reading.

She loves dancing, and will perform to a “Girl Power” remix in the Colusa County Mini Miss Pageant.

Emily said she would like to win the title to help her gain confidence. She also wants to be Mini Miss to meet new people and be a role model to other girls.

Letzy Ambriz, 11, is the daughter of Yesenia Velazquez and Rafael Ambriz.

She lives in Arbuckle, and has a younger brother.

Letzy is a sixth grader at Arbuckle Elementary School. She hopes to go to college and become a dentist. Letzy is athletic and enjoys cheerleading and playing basketball. She also likes to read.

Letzy said she loves to dance, and will be dancing to an “Uptown Funk” mix when she takes to the stage in the Colusa County Mini Miss Pageant.

Letzy said she was born in Colusa County, which would make her a good candidate for Mini Miss and being able to represent the county she loves.

Emma Esabell Schloesser, 11, is the daughter of Jack and Alicia Schloesser of Arbuckle. She is in the seventh grade at Arbuckle Junior High and plans to someday go to art school.

Emma enjoys drawing, sewing, camping, boating, band and music.

“I was taught by my cousin to play the ukulele,” said Emma, who plans to perform “Riptide” on the ukulele in the Colusa County Mini Miss Pageant.

Emma has long been involved in Arbuckle 4-H and the Colusa County Fair, winning Best of Show and first place in textiles, and said she would do her best to represent Colusa County if she won the Mini Miss title.

Hope Ann Gallagher, 10, is the daughter of Bill and Holly Gallagher of Colusa. She attends Egling Middle School, where she is in the sixth grade.

She loves drawing, swimming, spending time with friends at Church, watching You Tube videos and cooking.

Hope has studied hip-hop dancing for two years, and was a member of the school choir in fourth and fifth grades.

She plans to sing Jamie Grace’s “God Girl” in the Colusa County Mini Miss Pageant.

Hope said she would like to have fun with the pageant, and is looking forward to sharing her talent and wearing fancy dresses.

Salma Newella Gonzales, 11, is the daughter of Rosella and Nolan Gonzales. She is the youngest of seven siblings. Salma is a seventh grader at Egling Middle School and loves dancing, drawing, baking, playing golf and tennis with her father, soccer, basketball and playing video games.

“I would like to be the first Tribal member to become Colusa County Mini Miss,” Salma said. “and I want to look cute in the tiara.”

Salma has been dancing six years with Stardust Dance in Maxwell, and has taken piano lessons. She will sing and dance to a medley from “Pocahontas” in the Colusa County Mini Miss Pageant.

Alexis Avera, 11, of Colusa, is the daughter of Christy and David Avera.

She is a seventh grader at Egling Middle School, and likes to sing, draw, play guitar, take photos, swim, and play softball. She loves being a Girl Scout and does a lot of community service.

Alexis has three sisters. She is CPR and First Aid certified, and hopes to someday study architecture and work in real estate.

Alexis will perform “Hallelujah” A capopella in the Colusa County Mini Miss Pageant.

“I would like to be Mini Miss because I want to be able to share my singing with other people, and so I can support Colusa County,” Alexis said. “I also think it would be a lot of fun.”

Audry Marie Wills, 11, is the daughter of Jason and Kristen Wills of Maxwell.

She likes to write songs, play sports, swim, roller skate and listen to music.

Audry has two sisters, and is in the seventh grade at Maxwell Junior High School. She has had specialized training in music for the past four years and will be performing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” on the bells in the Colusa County Mini Miss Pageant.

“I would like to be Colusa County Mini Miss because I think that it would be fun and amazing to go to all the things Mini Miss is required to go to,” Audree said.

Bethany Wilson, 9, is the daughter of Joseph and Mary Wilson, of Colusa.

She loves stuffed animals but hates bugs and spiders. She has lived in Colusa County all her life, but admits she’s a bit scared of tornadoes.

Bethany will be singing “How Far I’ll Go” in the Colusa County Mini Miss Pageant.

Bethany is a home-schooled fourth grader, and hopes to someday become a teacher. Her hobbies include gymnastics, jumping on her trampoline, riding her bike, playing the violin, swimming, watching You Tube videos, reading and playing soccer.

Bethany said she is running for Mini Miss so she can “shine” for Colusa County.

Colusa County Jessica Guzman

Jessica Guzman, 17, of Colusa, is the daughter of Trena Andreotti and Jeremy Guzmam. She is a junior at Colusa High School, and enjoys cheering for the Red Hawks, playing basketball and is involved in ESA and Drama.

After she graduates in 2018,

Jessica plans to go to college in Washington to become an ultrasound technician.

Growing up, Jessica said her mom was her roll model, and is her role model to this day. “She is the strongest person I’ve ever known, and she teachers me to

be strong and independent,” said Jessica.

Jessica is running for Miss Colusa County because she wants to learn more skills in leadership and communication.

She will speak about the importance of deforestation and

how it will affect our world in the future.

Jessica loves Colusa County for its scenery and how close all the little towns are to each other, and wants to represent the county by being an active community member and a good

Khloey Wayman Khloey Wayman, 17, is the daughter of Alycen Wayman of Arbuckle. She is a junior at Pierce High School, and is active in FFA and volleyball. After graduation in 2018, Khloey plans to graduate from Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo and join the Navy. She plans to return to college after her enlistment.

Khloey is running for Miss Colusa County to raise scholarship money for college, and to have fun and make friends.

Her mother and grandmother were her roll models growing up. “My roll models now are still my mom and grandma, along with all the strong women in my life,” Khloey said.

The theme of Khloey’s speech is “How you

are isn’t as important as who you are.”

Khloey likes Colusa County’s wonderful small town vibe and the closeness of the community. If crowned, Khloey said she will represent Colusa County with respect and honesty reflective of her love for the community.

Ivet Madrigal Ivet Madrigal, 16, is the daughter of Salvador and Martha Madrigal, of Colusa.

She is a junior at Colusa High School, and is active in ASB, ESA, Volleyball and Cross Country Track. Ivet will graduate in 2018, and plans to go to Chico State

before transferring to CNI College in Orange County to become a surgical technician.

Growing up, Ivet said her sister was her more influential role model, but today her roll models are the teachers she had this year at Colusa High School.

Ivet is running for Miss Colusa County for the wonderful experience she is sharing with an amazing bunch of girls.

The overall theme of her pageant speech is that money has the power to make people work harder.

Ivet said if crowned, she would work hard to represent well the county she loves.

“I love how close everyone is and how supportive the people in this county are,” she said.

Hannah Azevedo Hannah Azevedo, 17, is the daughter of Jeremy and Cheri Azevedo, of Maxwell. She is a junior at Maxwell High School. She is involved in FFA, FBLA and Book Club. She is a class officer, on the rodeo committee and was a Rodeo Princess for the 2017 Maxwell High School Rodeo. After she graduates in 2018, Hannah plans to attend the University of Washington to pursue a degree in the

medical field.

Growing up, Hannah said her role model was Allison Costa, for her dedication to community, family and her involvement in FFA and 4H. Hannah said she loves the agricultural background of Colusa County, and enjoys how its community members come together in both good times and bad.

Hannah’s speech is about the pros and

cons of Social Media in today’s society. “I would like the opportunity to represent Colusa County as a young lady who is inspired by agriculture, and as a respectful teenager who takes pride in being granted the opportunity to show leadership,” Hannah said.

Morgan Cotter Morgan Cotter, 17, is the daughter of Neil and Stephanie Cotter of Colusa.

Morgan is a junior at Colusa High School. She is active in FFA and softaball, and will graduate in 2018.

plans to attend college in San Diego to become a speech therapist.

Growing up, Morgan said her role model was her “papa,” but both of her parents share in that roll today.

Morgan is running for Miss

Colusa County to better her communication skills. The theme of her speech centers on what it took to be a World War II hero.

Morgan said she loves her home county and would enjoy representing it over the next

year if she is crowned.

“I love the diversity of Colusa County,” she said. “You can fish, hunt, grow crops - and it’s a small community.”

Colusa County Fair FAIR BEER GARDEN PATRONS CAN GO WALK-ABOUT This year’s fair is offering up some changes in rules and location for its Beer Garden.

Hosted by the Sacramento River Rural Fire Protection District, the Beer Garden has been relocated.

“The Beer Garden is now located next to the Main Stage,” said Fair CEO Jonathan Howard. “It will be closer to all of the food, and the main hall.”

In past years, beer garden patrons have been restricted to staying in the garden while enjoying their beverage. This year the rules have changed and patrons will be allowed to walk about the fairgrounds with their beer until 7 PM daily. The beer garden is open during fair hours.

PROMOTE THE FAIR, GET A COIN

WHAT’S NEW AT FESTIVAL HALL

The popular Colusa County Fair Wooden Coin is back thanks to Premier Mushrooms.

The wooden coins are redeemable for a $1 credit at any participating fair food vendor displaying the Premier Mushroom logo.

But how do you earn a coin? A number of fair “spies” around the county will be listening to conversations. Anyone overheard promoting the fair will receive a wooden coin.

“You never know when someone might hand you a coin,” said Fair CEO Jonathan Howard.

Howard wants to remind patrons that only 2017 coins will be honored, and coins from years past will not.

BARTENDING COMPETITION

Colusa County Fair’s Festival Hall is usually a commercial building during the annual Fair, but that is going to change this year.

Festival Hall will be home to an expanded shopping venue for patrons, hosting about 30 booths, including commercial and handmade items.

“Our goal for the building is to create an opportunity for the whole family to find souvenirs from the fair,” said Araceli Plaza, from the fairgrounds. “Festival Hall is a great location for this venue.”

Come check out some of the area’s most talented bartenders during the fair’s Bartending Competition held at 8 PM on Saturday, June 10 in Festival Hall.

Carnival fun for everyone NEW CLOWN IN TOWN New to the Colusa County Fair is Lanky the Clown, and he will host Kids World this year.

Lanky has more than 25 years of clowning experience and has traveled the world entertaining children and adults. He has repeatedly toured Russia and Guatemala.

“We are very pleased that Lanky will be a part of our Fair,” said Fair CEO Jonathan Howard.

RIDE THE COWBOY TRAIN AT FREDDIE PREZ RETURNS COLUSA COUNTY FAIR WITH GAMES AND PRIZES During the Colusa County Fair, patrons will be able to hop aboard Cowboy Ken’s solar train.

Holding about 36 people, the train will help fair patrons to learn about the entertainment, foods and rides.

“Whenever you see my train, your rides are always free,” said Ken Kiefer, Cowboy Ken.

Freddie Prez and The Entertainment Zone wowed families at last year’s Colusa County Fair, and he’ll return this year to Kids World.

Prez offers up to eight separate attractions each day including: The Great Toilet Paper Blowout, The Kids Cash Scramble, Can You Karaoke?, The Dance Central Video Contest, The SpongeBob Trivia Contest, and much more.

“This year’s Kids World promises to delight not only the children but certainly their parents as well,” said Colusa County Fair CEO Jonathan Howard.

A top finalist from the American Country Star contest, Chad Bushnell, an up and coming country singer, is making a stop at the Colusa County Fair. Growing up in Red Bluff, CA, Bushnell has been singing since the age of four.

He has opened for big names in the industry including Tracy Lawrence, Neil McCoy, Billy Currington, Josh Gracin, and Mark Chesnutt. Bushnell has released a new album, “Tennessee.”

Bushnell has won the Best of the North State Band award in Northern California for 2015 and 2016.

“This is pretty exciting to have Chad come to our fair,” said Fair CEO Jonathon Howard. “I suspect we will be hearing his name a lot in the future.”

Hailing from Boston, MA, original Reggae Band ‘The Elovaters’ have been bringing their distinctive beach Reggae sound to fans and music lovers up and down the East Coast. The group’s following has continued to grow as they introduce songs from their new record “The Cornerstone”.

The group will grace the West Coast with their style when they perform for one night only during the Colusa County Fair.

“This year our goal was to bring a diverse group of entertainers for the fair,” said Fair CEO Jonathan Howard. “Having a high caliber reggae/funk group is a definite plus.”

Saturday: 3:00 PM, 4:30 PM, 7:30 PM, 9:00 PM, 10:30 PM The Country Music Association (CMA) named Dave Russell as being “Who New to Watch” and he’s coming to the Colusa County Fair.

Russell performs at some of the largest Music Festivals on the west coast, and is continually performing to packed venues.

He is starting to hit his stride as one of Nashville’s newest recording artists.

“We are so lucky to have this up and coming star make a stop at the Colusa County Fair,” said Colusa County Fair CEO Jonathan Howard.

Russell covers not only today’s contemporary favorites but has an extensive library of some of the “Greats of Country Music.”

JourneyDay & Jade, a Napa Valley bother/sister duo will perform at the Colusa County Fair. The duo will be on Festival Stage on Friday, June 9.

The brother and sister group has been performing together from a very young age.

Now, they tour appearing at fairs, festivals and other venues and music halls.

“JourneyDay & Jade are an easy listening duo with a great acoustic sound. They are perfect for the Festival Stage,” said Fair CEO Jonathan Howard. “They will appeal to audiences of all ages.”

This year’s fair features a great line-up of entertainment, including ‘Sunny and the Black Pack’ with Tammy Byerly.

The Pack, top producers, talented songwriters and world-class musicians came together when they decided to step out from behind the curtain of production and take their places on stage.

For years, The Black Pack and its producers composed and created some of the world’s most influential music when recently they decided to fulfill their desire to share their music and message with the world, The Black Pack pivoted from producing to performing.

Sunny Promyotin, lead vocalist, piano player and ukulele artist leads the group, A world class pianist, producer and vocalist, Sunny takes the reigns of The Black Pack and pushes the team to their utmost potential.

His signature sound is described as an improvisational, melodic and harmonious mash up of folk, jazz, funk, blues, and hip hop. His unique scatting and monster jazz voicing keep his sound fresh and truly set him apart from other wouldbe artists.

Mutli-instrumental, composer, lyricist, producer and performer, Tammy Byerly has been one of the most talented individuals to join forces with The Black Pack, say band members. While scheduling and location don’t allow her to perform on a regular basis with the band, she has been known to grace the live shows when opportunity allows.

“That’s not an act you see every day,” said Fair CEO Jonathan Howard.

“One act we are particularly excited about is Cello Joe,” said Howard. “This

guy is amazing.”

Chang began studying the cello at age 10 but he discovered playing on the street after eight years of classical training. First, he played his classical repertoire over and over. This practice got old pretty quick. Slowly and surely his talent developed.

Hip- hop had always been part of Joey’s listening diet and because of this habit, beat-boxing naturally began to work its way into his improvisations on the street.

great day trips for summer

T

here are a lot more things to do in Colusa County over the summer than you might think.

A beautiful state park for a family barbecue; fishing and boating on the Sacramento River; an outing to East Park Reservoir; or driving or hiking through the Colusa National Wildlife Refuge.

But if you are looking to get away for a day this summer, we have chosen five great outings for you to consider.

1) NEVADA CITY Nevada City is among the most interesting of California Gold Rush towns, attracting visitors from far and wide. The entire downtown district is a national historic landmark where guests enjoy a variety of restaurants, shops, art galleries and museums, all flavored with old-fashioned Nevada City hospitality. Bordering the Tahoe National Forest, and just 63 miles east of Colusa, Nevada City hosts a number of events and festivals throughout the summer. Live music, theater and dance are performed nearly continually at Miners Foundry Cultural Center and the historic Nevada Theatre. Many bars and restaurants feature live music.

The Nevada County Historical Society operates Historic Firehouse No. 1 Museum downtown, and the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum in the Seven Hills Business District area. Summer events include the Nevada City Storytelling Festival, located at the North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center in nearby North Columbia, and Hot Summer Nights, an outdoor street festival of art and music held several Wednesday evenings in July. 2) SOUTH YUBA RIVER STATE PARK South Yuba River State Park has something for everybody.

The South Yuba River is famous for its pristine water, historic bridges, miles of hiking trails, and the nation´s only wheelchair-accessible wilderness trail: the Independence Trail. You and your family can wander through the history of the Bridgeport Covered Bridge, learn more about the wagons that traveled these parts, pan for gold, escape to a hidden swimming hole, roam trails along the river and so much more. Every Saturday and Sunday from Memorial Day through Labor Day, you can pan for gold when you stop by the troughs near the Visitors Center. You will also find a history station staffed by friendly docents who will explain the history of the bridge, barn, wagons, and the pioneers who lived there. 3) CASTELLO di AMOROSA Looking for a quick romantic getaway this summer? The Castello di Amorosa is an authentically-built, 13th century inspired Tuscan castle and winery in world famous Napa Valley.

4) TURTLE BAY EXPLORATION PARK The Turtle Bay Museum is the heart of the Turtle Bay experience. It contains permanent, interactive exhibits and two large special exhibition galleries. In addition to underwater fish viewing, walking through historic re-creations, experimenting with scientific equipment and other activities, visitors to Turtle Bay now through Oct. 1 can enjoy the world of Mythic Creatures. The exhibit traces the natural and cultural roots of some of the world’s most enduring mythological creatures like dragons, unicorns and mermaids. This amazing exhibition includes imaginative models, paintings, and textiles, along with other cultural objects from around the world ranging from Chinese shadow puppets to Greek coins that bring to light surprising similarities and differences in the ways people around the

world have been inspired by nature to envision and depict these strange and wonderful creatures. Park admission includes the museum, forest camp, Parrot Playhouse, and botanical gardens, which are open daily. Turtle Bay is located 106 miles north of Colusa in Redding. Visit www.turtlebay. org.

5) Bidwell Park Trails If you feel like hiking or mountain biking this summer, there is no better place than the trails of Bidwell Park, located just 50 miles from Colusa in Chico. Upper Bidwell Park is located in a majestic canyon with spectacular vistas, steep terrain, many rock formations and a diverse selection of flora and fauna. Upper Park is a great place to spend the afternoon.

Horseshoe Lake, at the base of Upper Park, is the perfect place to begin your hike or bike trip into the foothills. Although there is no swimming allowed in Horseshoe Lake, it is the perfect place for a family outing or picnic. Kids can try their hand at fishing in the lake from the new, handicap-accessible pier. For a less vigorous stroll, Lower Park is flat and level with a thick canopy of trees, which provide ample shade for visitors. Also for your summer pleasure, Bidwell Park Municipal Golf Course is an 18-hole, tree-lined course that offers a beautiful view and great golfing for any skill level. Visit www. bidwellpark.org.

CALIFORNIA AG HISTORY MUSEUM

Located in the beautiful 106-year-old building that served as Williams High School from 1911 to 1956, the Sacramento Valley Museum is a must for residents as well as visitors to Colusa County. The museum provides an impressive regional display of some of the most unique exhibits from the past 150 years. The Sacramento Valley Museum is a true step back into time. If you haven’t been to the California Agriculture Museum (Heidrick Ag History Center) in Woodland then you are missing something spectacular. The museum is dedicated to enhancing an understanding and appreciation of California’s rich agricultural heritage. Its unique collection and interactive exhibits tell the history of farm to fork, dating back to California’s Gold Rush. The Museum’s core collection consists of rare examples of tractors, harvesters, trucks, autos, horse-drawn

implements and other artifacts that tell the California story.

Open from 10 AM to 5 PM, Wednesday through Saturday; 10 AM to 4 wPM Sunday.

If you missed a Memorial Day ceremony in Colusa County, then you can honor those who stepped forward to defend our country by taking

a drive out to the Museum of the Forgotten Warriors, near Beale Air Force Base. It may be located in the boonies, but the unforgettable museum is worthy of Washington D.C. Filled with military artifacts, some dating to the Revolutionary War, the museum boasts a large collection of photographs and letters, military uniforms and insignia, flags and weaponry, military gear and personal artifacts - all presented with the highest professional standards.

The Museum of the Forgotten Warriors, located at 5865 A Road, Marysville, is open 10 AM to 3 PM on Saturday; and 7-9 PM on Thursday. 5865 A Rd, Marysville. Take Hwy 70 exit 20 onto N. Beale Rd. The Gateway Science Museum of Chico State University brings world class traveling exhibits to the region, and offers interactive exhibits and activities in science, technology and engineering experiences.

The museum in Willows exists quietly in a primarily residential area and occupies the 1911 former Andrew Carnegie Public Library. It’s rich with exhibits relating to early Glenn County, which was once part of Colusi County. It has an exhibit on the Wintun Native Americans, the original occupants of this region, that is worthy a look. Exhibits also include agriculture, water irrigation, the railroad, the Smoke Jumpers and U.S. Forest Services, fashion through the years, and prominent people.

The museum is located at 336 West Walnut St., Willows. Open 1-4 PM Thursday and Saturday.

Duck call competition returns

W

hen summer draws to a close, Colusa County will ring in the fall with the sound of duck calls.

One of the last events of the summer season, the California State Duck Calling Championship brings thousands of visitors to Colusa, where competitors vie for a spot at the World Duck Calling Championship in Stuttgart, AR. Hosted by Kittle’s Outdoor & Sport for the past seven years, the two-day event is geared toward outdoorsmen and waterfowl enthusiasts, and draws folks from all around California and beyond. This year, the contest will take place on Aug. 26 and 27. Colusa will host the only calling contests in California sanctioned by the Stuttgart Chamber of Commerce: The California State Contest, which is open to only California residents, and the regional contest, which is open to out of state residents.

Callers can compete in ten different categories over the course of the event. Those include the California Classic “Open” Duck Call Champi-

onship, the Junior and Intermediate Duck and Speck Calling Contests, the California State Live Duck Calling Contest, the California State Canada Goose Calling Contest, the California State Duck Championship and World Championship Qualifier, the California State Speck Calling Contest, the and the California State Two-Man Meat Calling Contest, and the Butte Sink Regional Championship and World Championship Qualifier.

In addition to the calling contests, Veterans Memorial Park will be filled with vendors selling calls and hunting merchandise, and sponsors providing information on local outdoors opportunities.

Just across the street, Kittle Outdoor & Sport will again hold their biggest sale of the year, with huge deals on waterfowl items, just in time for the start of duck season.

“I think of this really as an outdoors festival.

It’s a great opportunity to learn from groups like the California Waterfowl Association, learn about outdoor opportunities in the area ­– it’s an outdoor enthusiast’s gathering,” said organizer Steve Sherbondy. “We’re expanding the festival to include more things. Between the big sale in the store, the vendors, and the calling contest, it should be a pretty good event.”
