Lakeside Lutheran Link #23 (2023 Issue 1)

I’ve walked out of these doors, seemingly for the last time, before. There was a point in my life where Lakeside WAS my life. I was an athlete, I was in theatre productions, I was a band and choir member, and sometimes—a halfway decent student. After four years, I walked out of these doors and became an alumnus. At the end of this school year, I will also have become a former teacher.

mission

Motivated by the love of Jesus, Lakeside Lutheran High School partners with families to educate, encourage, and equip students for life and for eternity.

about our federation

The Lakeside Lutheran Federation includes 33 congregations in a diverse geographic region in southcentral Wisconsin that extends north to south from Beaver Dam to Janesville and east to west from Okauchee to Middleton.

The students at LLHS are truly a treasure and they leave their mark on you. Each student is walking their own high school path and, as teachers, we have the responsibility and opportunity to guide their steps in the way Christ would walk. At Lakeside we are able to do that freely, without restriction. We get to show them Jesus.

A high school can have beautiful grounds, it can provide an amazing building, the athletic program can lead the nation, the faculty can be the best—but if it doesn’t have space for Christ, then none of the rest of it really matters. Please thank God for a place like Lakeside Lutheran High School.

Mr. Jason Fry ‘03 (St. Peter, Helenville) served as a substitute teacher prior to the oneyear call he accepted for the 2022/23 school year, teaching Junior Doctrine and a math course. He also serves as a coach for the Junior Warrior football program. He leaves us this spring to begin a new career venture. We are grateful for his short but impactful ministry at Lakeside Lutheran.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a student here, but I think—if I was being honest with myself— my time as a teacher was more rewarding.

Warrior family extends to sports (cover)

Last fall, both cross country teams earned a berth at the state meet, and the boys ran to runner up status. Then, after a 12-year absence, our Warrior dribblers got another shot at the WIAA Division 3 boys basketball state title. This spring, boys track & field powered to a first-ever team title. Read more about both basketball trips on p. 10-11, plus some alum thoughts on this year’s Track & Field, p. 12.

THANK YOU! Our 12th annual GRAND day once again humbled us by the love and support that showed up to help shout the message that He is indeed Worthy of Praise. We give all glory to God for another year of blessing this night of fellowship and fun. We are thrilled to share that $142,000 was raised for our mission, financial aid, and fund-a needs that included theatre lighting, a marimba, and OpGo. Lakeside is blessed beyond measure because of your heart for Christian education. More pics at llhs.smugmug.com/LLFamily/Grand-Event-12-Worthy-of-Praise

Faculty Feature: Science teacher

Tracy heads for the hills

After beginning his working years under sea level in a Navy submarine, a 27-year member of our Lakeside Lutheran science faculty, Mr. Damon Tracy, is retiring from ministry to start something new somewhere in the North Carolina hills.

Retirement announced fall 2022

Last October, Mr. Damon Tracy (‘83) shared a letter with his Lakeside family: Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

After much consideration, I am announcing my retirement from the teaching ministry. Lakeside, with its fantastic faculty, staff, students, parents, supporters, friends and uncountable blessings, will be greatly missed. We are and will be very much in God’s hands, and I cannot imagine a better place to be.

Very Respectfully, Damon S. Tracy

13 years after graduation, he returned for 27 years of teaching

According to Damon himself, guiding future graduates of Lakeside Lutheran helped him appreciate his own past—including his time on a Navy submarine—and the Christian education that helped lead him through his own life choices. He taught in our science department—especially Chemistry and Physics, but others as well, including Freshman General Science, Environmental and Earth Sciences, even Health. He also led audio/visual efforts for the campus, supervised a student A/V group that helps with recording, and—well before 2019 but intensely since—livestreaming concerts, sports and theatre performances. (Follow LL events on livestream.com/llhslive)

Reflecting, he shared, “I am always amazed at how much the Lord blesses the students’ efforts—from the beginning of the year when the students in Chemistry are figuring out how to use math in a science context, all the way through to the final exam where I see them answering questions that they never would have understood at the beginning.

“Students who might never have raised a hand in class spoke on subjects they had heard about but were never formally taught: black holes, space travel, relativity, dinosaurs, blowing stuff up (very frequently asked), life on a submarine, how things work, politics and more. It’s a testament to how important it is to keep students at this age surrounded by a Christ-centered, reliable environment where parents can feel confident in how these topics will be addressed.”

Mr. Tracy escaped campus before he could be pinned down for many future plans, but a 2017 interview—one that asked what his “favorite things to do on a Saturday” were—holds strong probability for similar answers when asked what he might do now that he’s retired: be “a storm chaser, an astronaut, or a benevolent dictator of a small country (none of which I have actually done ... yet).”

Lakeside will miss you, Dictator Director Tracy. God bless your travels, your southern living, your family and whatever might get you to show up at a future homecoming. We promise to find someone else to record the game!

At top: Physics students (2013 in this pic) always appreciated the hands-on learning that was the flagship of Tracy instructional style. Middle/bottom: Damon was always notoriously camera shy, but 27 years is a long time, especially when he so often agreed to help with young elementary students on campus for field trips. In 2019, 2nd graders learned whether Cheetos made good rocket fuel and what engineering made for the tallest Lego tower.

Lakeside Link: 2014 grad writes about “ Living on Mission”

Micah Torgerson began life after Lakeside on a fairly traditional path—college, CPA exam, job with an accounting firm. He stumbled upon the World Race Instagram page one fall evening in 2019, and a he hit a fork in his road. Read his story here.

The World Race, just like the website says, is “a life-changing mission trip where you will grow with God, serve with others, and make a difference!” More specifically, my trip—World Race 11n11—is an 11-month mission trip where participants serve as missionaries partnering with 11 different ministries in 11 different countries around the world. Oddly enough, I had never heard of the World Race before I stumbled upon their Instagram page one fall evening in 2019. I took a deep dive through the website, watched testimony after testimony on YouTube from previous World Racers, and felt the Lord calling me to push pause on my life and give a year in service to Him.

Then came 2020 and COVID-19. World Race pulled their missionaries from the field. I spent all of 2020 fundraising and growing in community with the brothers and sisters I would soon travel the world with. We spent countless hours on Zoom, chatting and doing Bible studies, and then several cross-country trips to meet and build our newfound friendships. In January 2021, 43 other members of H-Squad and I were approved to commence our Race, with the expectation that it would look different than the traditional format. All in all, we partnered with 8 ministries in 7 countries spread on 3 continents—first Costa Rica, then Guatemala, Honduras, across the Atlantic to Romania and Albania, concluding in Lesotho and South Africa.

One of my most powerful takeaways as a whole is how the Lord abundantly transcends all cultural and linguistic barriers. So often I would see a fear of not knowing the local languages or cultures hindering me from fully immersing myself in all that the Lord was doing in our ministry settings. Time and time again, the Lord would show up and unite us with our partner ministries and the communities we were serving— only explainable through the power of the Holy Spirit.

While I couldn’t be more thankful for the solid faith foundation from my upbringing (thank you, Lakeside!), I wouldn’t trade this World Race experience for anything. Before the trip began, my faith life was opened up to a deep, intimate, life-changing Christian community that helped carry our group through extremely challenging times in the field. I’m thankful to have experienced different cultures—more specifically, different church environments—and to see first hand the zeal for the Lord held by the global Church. I’m thankful for the life-long ministry connections and friendships formed across the country and across the world. Lastly, I’ll be forever grateful to the Lord for using this trip as an introduction to my wife, Kailee (Ed. note: nee Knudsen— they were married May 28, 2023 in Kansas City and currently live in Texas)

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Micah 6:8

From the author: The World Race has certainly helped me reshape the way I view living life on mission for the Lord. If you’ve ever felt a nudge to do missions, I would like to encourage you to say yes to serving the Lord in whatever capacity that might look like. There is an open invitation if you’d ever like to connect regarding missions or anything related to life with the Lord.

Cross Country starts 2 of 4 team runs at state titles in 22/23

Both 2022 Warrior cross country teams made trips to the WIAA state meet in October (2nd year in a row for boys).

Starting off a year of incredible team success

Our cross country boys team was conference and sectional champs, advancing as a team to the WIAA D2 State Championships October 29 at The Ridges Golf course in Wisconsin Rapids. At state, they earned the D2 State Runner Up trophy.

“To God be the glory,” Warrior cross country coach Cameron Ausen said. “In order to finish in those top couple of teams, the margin—when you are looking at 30 points—it seems like a lot. It’s not. It’s not much. There are so many bodies up there. For our boys to execute, in that way, in that fashion, on this stage, was just awesome.”

The girls were both conference and sectional runners-up, earning a team berth at State for the first time since 2012 and the first time both programs qualified for the state meet since 2006.

At right: Junior Cameron Weiland was the medalist at sectionals and placed 12th at state, the highestplacing Warrior in program history.

The 2022-23 Warriors boys basketball team made its secondever trip to the WIAA state final four this past March.

The Journey

It began with a three-way share for the championship in a highly competitive Capitol North conference. Then our stateranked #10 Warriors (23-3) won their first regional title since 2014, defeating Lake Mills 59-45. They finished their home stand 14-0.

The #2 seeded Lakeside Lutheran boys basketball team fended off top-seed Columbus 49-46 in overtime in the D3 sectional semifinal. Advancing to the finals, they defeated Edgewood 68-65.

Back at the Kohl Center

At the first round of state, they fell to Brillion 55-57, an exciting game that came down to the final seconds. “Our team poured their heart and soul into it,” says coach Todd Jahns. “I’m extremely proud of the young men we’ve got and how they represented our school.”

The 2023 team gets a pre-game tour of the Kohl Center.

This year’s trip brought back memories from 2011, the first time our boys basketball team made the WIAA final four. A couple alum who remember the first trip well responded to our emailed questions.

Craig Wilke, 6’4 , jersey #34, class of 2011

A senior on that 2011 team, Craig is now a church-planting WELS pastor in Brandon, So. Dak. He and Christina, married in 2017, have lived in Brandon for the past four years and have two-year-old Greta, and another child due in July.

What is your favorite basketball memory in general?

My favorite memories came from the rivalry games, always fairly close games that brought great crowds. The two that stick out were against LPS sophomore year. In the first, Jake Meise (‘12) hit a last-second three to give us the win at home. In the second at Prep, Nate Bauer (‘13) hung 30+ points to give us another win. Another good memory was playing Lodi the second time in that 2011 season. We had lost to them the first time, our only loss at the time. We came out and beat them at home.

I deeply enjoyed the friends I made on several different teams at Lakeside. I also loved playing for Coach Jim Bauer for 4 years. His high-speed, pressure defense got me ready to play at the college level.

What is your favorite memory of your ride to State?

What I remember most was the excitement. Excitement on the team, of course, but the student section bringing a lot to the games. The atmosphere at those games was the best I’d ever played in. Although the outcome of the state game was not what we wanted, it was an awesome experience to play at the Kohl Center and to play against future Badger Bronson Koenig.

Jim Klug connected to both state basketball trips and then some!

Jim’s son Jeff (‘11) was on that 2011 team, and this ‘71 grad was connected to this year’s run as one of the announcers for games! He took some time to talk about his own time at LLHS. “Going to Lakeside kept me on the right track spiritually through my high school years. Many of the kids from St. John, Jefferson also attended, and I still see them on a fairly regular basis on Sunday mornings in church,” he said. “One of the nice things about Lakeside is the interaction you have with so many kids from different areas but with the same spiritual beliefs. I had friends from Madison, Columbus, Beaver Dam, Fort Atkinson and other places—people I would never have met except for Lakeside. When it came time to send my two sons to high school Lakeside was the obvious choice.”

Basketball, however, isn’t the main way Klug stays involved with LL

“This is my 15th year helping coach the baseball team,” he shares. He has coached under Gerry Hahn, Dan Kuehl, Phil Dretske, and now, Jake Ziel. “The best part of helping with the baseball team is working with the coaches and players,” he says. The highlight was being involved when his other son Brian was part of Lakeside’s 2009 state baseball team!

The excitement fans bring to state is a timeless thrill. << Starting line-up introductions | 2011 Sectional Champs! << The Klug family: Jim & Anne with their sons and wives: Jeffrey (‘12) & Kris (left) and Brian (‘09) & Barbara (right)

Boys Track & Field earns D2 state title as a team

Stop the Presses! Right as this edition was ready to go to print—an issue that was already celebrating two sports teams’ contention for state trophies, the state track meet brought news that needed to be celebrated. We report on the trip to state, all the school records that have fallen this spring, and asked an alum coach for his thoughts on this exceptionally memorable season:

Matt Ziegler ‘09— Warrior Track & Field coach since 2014

As a student-athlete, Ziegler’s best events were the 200 and triple jump. In 2009, he qualified for state in both and took 4th in the 200. At UW-Platteville, he ran the 400 and qualified for nationals twice. Now he passes along what he’s learned. What he likes about coaching is “watching the progression and improvements that the kids make from freshmen to seniors—then being able to show incoming freshmen what is possible,” he shares.

He takes away what stood out to him as a turning point at state: “Day 1, everything was to plan until the 200. When Krauklis and Reinke didn’t make finals, I thought we were out of the team title race,” he admits. “I thought, ‘Well, let’s try and get kids some medals in other events—still a great meet if we get on the podium a few more times.’ Then Buxa (holding trophy above) took 2nd in disc, a PR, 7th school record. We were right back in it. Everyone felt it; everyone else took care of business.” (Fun fact about Matt: he is simultaneously the longest tenured track coach, while also being the youngest!)

The Journey

The boys team seemed to sprint through the season collecting championships—first Conference, then Region, then—for the first time for both in program history—Sectional AND State! With a score of 45 points, it was a true team effort. The top six finishers in each event earn a place on the podium. Though they didn’t score in every event, all 10 athletes earned a medal and a place on the podium. Congratulations to

• Gold—Ben Buxa, shot put (with 54’3”)

• Silver—Mark Garcia, Tyler Gresens, Karsten Grundahl, Cameron Weiland, 3200M relay

• Silver—Karsten Grundahl, 800M

• Silver—Ben Buxa, discus

• Bronze—Ben Krauklis, Tyler Dahlie, Karsten Grundahl, Alex Reinke, 1600M relay

• 4th—Jay Yahnke, Issiah Sampson, Alex Reinke, Ben Krauklis, 800M relay

<< Record-breaking season!

Throughout the 2023 season, 7 school records were broken. Some were broken multiple times for a total of 14 records, and 5 of those were at state. Congrats to those alum who stayed on the courtyard hallway banner as long as they did!

Supporting the next generationthrough Scrip!

Dave Borth (‘83) and his wife, Mary, (at right) want to help their grandchildren attend Lakeside Lutheran High School, and are doing that ahead of time, thanks to Warrior Scrip.

It all began with an email from Dave and Mary’s son, Sam (‘11), to our Scrip coordinator, Melissa Cooley, last summer:

Good Morning Melissa, I am an alum interested in the Warrior Scrip program.

My wife Kendra and I are expecting and would like to set up a scrip account so we can begin to save for tuition while also supporting Lakeside.

I have a few questions ...

He placed his first order the next month, when Kendra still had a few months to go in her pregnancy!

When Dave reached out to us that same month, he shared how he was excited that Sam believes in the importance of Christian education and wants to provide a Christ-centered secondary education for his children just as Dave and Mary had provided him and his siblings. So Grandpa and Grandma Borth are joining Sam and Kendra in getting started on helping save now—even though the future Borth Warrior is only an infant—all by making everyday purchases using gift cards.

What are “Scrip” cards?

Scrip cards—we fondly call them Warrior Scrip—are gift cards that retailers offer to organizations like Lakeside for a percentage off face value. The cards can be for items you already buy—gas, groceries, clothing, dining out—or for special purchases like airline tickets and hotel stays. That percentage off is sent as a rebate to Lakeside and it is split 50/50 with participants at the end of our fiscal year.

The LLHS Financial Planning Committee uses the school’s 50% to benefit the entire student body. For the 2022-23 school year, funds supported our transportation program.

Program participants designate the other 50% toward

• a tuition or lunch credit for a current or future student;

• a donation back to LLHS; or

• a cash rebate

Who can purchase Scrip cards?

You can! Sign up online at RaiseRight.com/enroll and use the LLHS enrollment code. For more info or to be given our code, contact Melissa at scrip@llhs.org.
