Inflatable Santas at Halloween

I was at a certain large store filled with tools and home repair items. I couldn’t help but notice that it was overrun with Christmas decorations, even though it was the middle of October. Christmas trees, inflatable Santas, and Christmas villages were everywhere! The Christmas music wasn’t playing over the loud speaker… yet. I did see an elf costume—in the Halloween section.

Are you so busy working or shopping every minute from now until Christmas that you have no time to be thankful?

My encouragement to you is to take time during this month of November to ponder the many blessings God has given to you. Sit in church and think. Sit at home with the TV off and the phone on silent (and face down!) and pray a prayer of thanksgiving.

Sometimes it feels like our culture is skipping Thanksgiving and rushing toward Christmas as quickly as possible. There is no time to stop, no time to hold still and ponder the many reasons we have to be thankful. Why do we have days off around Thanksgiving? So that we can go Christmas shopping, many would say. What is the best day to go Christmas shopping? It used to be “Black Friday.” Now, many would say that it’s Thanksgiving.

Nov. 27–Dec. 1 Thanksgiving Recess

As Christians, we have a unique “take” on Thanksgiving, because we express thanks to someone—to God. We thank God not just for the physical blessings of health, family, food, and possessions. We thank God for our salvation, brought to us by Jesus’ death and resurrection.

May God bless you with a thankful heart, not just this month but always! “I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.”

Psalm 9:1 ❧DS

Lakeside Good News y Notes

c Junior Natalie Popp [Our Redeemer, Madison] published a children’s book “Lew for the Red, White, and Blue” based on a veteran who served in three wars. Illustrated by Forever Warrior Anna Kreutz (‘21) it is available at neverforgottenbooks.com

c A record-breaking 294 grandparents came to campus for Grandparents Day in September. Photos are available at llhs. smugmug.com/LLFamily/ Grandparents-Day-Fall-2024

c LLHS teachers Eric and Sophie Dorn welcomed their first child, Kyra Jean, on Monday, Sept. 23. This sweet future Warrior was 8#12 & 21”

c Two more bittersweet retirement announcements: Lakeside teachers Mrs. Lori Tetzlaff (art) and Mr. Daniel Kuehl (English) have both announced their intention to retire from teaching, effective at the end of this school year. Mrs. T has spent 25 years in ministry at LLHS; Mr. Kuehl spent 29 of his 44 years in ministry.

c Our General Board issued two calls at its Oct. 15 meeting: for Spanish to Matt Evans, serving at St. Lucas in Milwaukee, and for Art, to Mark Hesse, serving at St. Lucas in Kewaskum. Please keep these men in prayer as they deliberate where the Lord would have them serve next fall.

Staff introductions wrap up

Finally, two new (but familiar) faces to say hello to when you see:

Mr. Caleb Kasper | Industrial Arts

Mr. Kasper joined us to teach Industrial Arts classes, such as Woods, Small Engines, Metals, and Construction. He will also be involved with robotics and help with video production. (And he’s already assisted others in artsy ways, like having his Woods 2 class build the working car for the Fall Theatre stage production!).

A 1998 Lakeside grad, he says, “I’m excited to be coming BACK. I’m really looking forward to meeting the students, and being back in a place that is driven by a Christ-centered compass.”

A graduate of Carroll University, he has traveled to a number of places including Mexico, Czech Republic, Scotland, and China. He and his wife, Sara (Deck, LL ‘98) have two children, Kendra (‘20) and Ben (‘22). The family lives in Helenville and are members of St. John, Jefferson.

Mrs. Jennifer Statz | Student Services

Mrs. Jen Statz joined the faculty as the Assistant Director of Student Services. As a ‘94 LL grad, she is thankful to teach at her alma mater. “Lakeside has always been a special place for our family. Brian and I have nothing but great memories from our time walking these halls. The faith foundations we took with us provided our grounding as we built our life together and raised our girls,” she says. “Serving here brings my Lakeside journey full circle. I pray my work here is a blessing to Lakeside just as Lakeside has been to my family.”

She and her husband Brian (‘94) have three daughters: Emma (‘20), Nora (‘22), and Addy (8th grade). They are members of St. Peter, Helenville.

Statz graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran College in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Social Studies, and Biology with Secondary Ed. (‘99). She received her masters in Education from Viterbo in 2009 and Educational Leadership in 2021.

She enjoys gardening, though she says “our summers have been full of lawn chairs and softball fields for the past number of years, so what typically starts off as a work of art, isn’t so weed-free by the end of the summer.” She also enjoys traveling with the family, crafting when time permits, and working on projects around their property.
