I often ride my bicycle to school. It isn’t a long trip, and it’s mostly downhill on the way there. But the way home can be a challenge. Those late afternoon storms will sometimes catch me. My knees don’t react well to the steep uphill climb. On most days, I will walk my bike to the top of the “Lakeside hill.” Sometimes students will pass me on the way beeping their horns as they wave to me in the rain. When the wind is blowing and the knees are aching and the horns are beeping, I sometimes think to myself, “What am I doing?”

We are beginning another school year. What are we doing? The task of Christian education can feel like biking uphill in the rain. There are so many challenges! God

wants us to pass his Word on to the next generation. But they are teenagers! And the world around them is trying to pull them into all kinds of bad directions! And our culture isn’t very “pro-Bible” the last time I checked!

But God is with us. In the Old Testament, God tells us to “keep pedaling” —“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). In the New Testament, Jesus tells us that he is with us as we teach his Word: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations … teaching them … and surely I am with you always” (Matthew 28:19-20).

And so we keep pedaling because Jesus is with us as we begin this school year. He is in the middle of every classroom, every lesson. He blesses every teacher and every student as we center our lives over and over again on his Word. The task can be challenging at times! But Jesus is bigger than all the challenges that come our way. Maybe I’ll see you at Lakeside this school year! Or maybe I’ll see you on that hill after school. ❧DS

More new face intros! Say hello when you see: Mr. Austin DeNoyer | PhyEd dept.

A 2016 alum, Mr. DeNoyer joins the faculty to teach Strength and Conditioning, Fit for Life, and Freshman Boys PhyEd. He will also coach JV2 Football and Track and Field. “I’m most excited to be able to share my passion for fitness and athletics with the students,” he says.

Austin and his wife, Carissa, were married in 2021 and are expecting their first child in November. “My hobbies include doing anything active outside, but especially camping and hiking with my wife,” he says. “We’ve been able to hike in many different states, including Alaska, California, Washington, and Colorado.”

Mr. Joshua Hoehnke | Music Dept.

Mr. Hoehnke isn’t a regular face on our campus, but he certainly is around our Lutheran elementary and middle schools. Since fall of 2020, he has been an

instructor with grade school band members. This summer, he joined the LLHS staff as our Elementary Band Director.

A ‘20 graduate of Wis. Lutheran College with a degree in Wide Range Instrumental Music Education, Josh and wife, Taylor, and their dog, Mushu, live in Cambridge and are members at St. Paul, Lake Mills.

Mrs. Sophia Dorn | ELC, Math dept. Sophie Dorn is a 2020 Martin Luther College grad with a double major in elementary ed and secondary chemistry. Dorn, who married LLHS teacher Eric Dorn, will be working in the Extended Learning Center and teaching one section of pre algebra. “I’m excited to share my faith and passion for education with the students!” she says.

“I was born and raised in Lusaka, Zambia, Africa, where my parents were missionaries for over 30 years,” Sophie says.

“Because of this I’ve had the opportunity to travel to different countries around the world. So far I’ve been blessed to make it to 5 out of the 7 continents.” She and Eric visited Africa and more this summer.

In her free time, she loves art, swimming, and playing tennis, soccer and volleyball.
