Fed eration Connection Christian education is a key component of ministry.

It begins with parents training their children in God’s Word in the home. Then, it is reinforced through Sunday school, youth group, Bible class, the parish school, and the Lutheran high school.

Why do we in the WELS and ELS prize Christian education especially for our children?

First, Christian education is the best choice that parents can make for their children.

Many philosophies in this sinful world—like materialism, humanism, and narcissism —compete for our children. Without realizing it, young Christians may be drawn into loving other things above God. Christian education puts life into perspective.

Students in Christian schools learn that this world “will pass away.” They also know that “[Jesus’] words will never pass away” [Luke 21:33]. Christian education provides complete training for young people in this life and—more importantly—for eternity.

Secondly, Christian education is our “Father’s business” [Luke 2:49, KJV]. God commands parents to train their children in his Word. “Start off children on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it” [Prov. 22:6].

“Bring [your children] up in the training and instruction of the Lord” [Eph. 6:4].

Christian education is not moralizing, philosophizing, or social commentary. It is the power of God’s Word. Christian teachers inject God’s Word into every subject every day. Each day, students in Christian schools study God’s Word and receive the means to grow in faith. Core and elective classes incorporate the Word of God every day. Cocurriculars recognize that God blesses everyone with skills to use to His glory. Coaches, directors, and advisors pray with their students before performances and games. They use “teachable moments” to guide and counsel their students in God’s Word. Christian educators “take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ” [2 Corinthians 10:5].

God lead us to prize Christian education in all its forms and use it to train the next generation for service on earth and for the future glories of heaven.

Spanish teacher reflects on his own youth mission trips

Lakeside begins partnership for summer mission trips

This article is 15th in a series of faculty and staff responses to why they’re thankful to serve at your Lakeside, along with recollections of moments that demonstrate the value of the investment of time and resources for the families who choose LLHS for their children.

Your Lakeside Lutheran is excited and privileged to begin an annual student mission trips initiative in partnership with WELS Kingdom Workers.

Warriors who are 16+ were given opportunity to apply to participate this summer, and this inaugural year’s four teams were recently announced. The program is being called OperationGO, and we’re excited to see our students have the opportunity to grow in faith and help other believers in the U.S. and internationally! Each team has been assigned, adult chaperones from LLHS staff are being finalized, and students are ready to start spreading the word and building support for the activities they’ll be participating in:

Mr. Nathan Koerber is one of the newest faces on staff at your LLHS, in the middle of his second year here.

Mr. Koerber teaches three of the four levels of Spanish, and works with the soccer and baseball programs.

Prior to his call here, he and wife Sarah spent a year in Wuhan, China, where he taught at a university and middle school. One of his favorite memories is watching the streamed 2013 MLC call service at 3:30 a.m.—projected over their apartment wall in China. Perhaps the distant travel and diverse culture they experienced prompts his favorite passage, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

Says Mr. Koerber on Christian education and life outside the “bubble” of our WELS/ELS synods: “My parents, from before I was in kindergarten, had deemed it important to send me through an entire Christian education system—all the way through 12th grade. [Divine Savior Lutheran in

Indianapolis for K–8, then Luther Prep.]

“I have seen what can happen when someone has a Christian education. It produces a completely different mind-set in an individual.

“Sometimes students—including myself back then—wish that we would be more exposed to the world and let out of the “WELS bubble.” Yet when I reflect on the opportunities I had to join in mission trips through our faith connections, whether through school-related activities or through another organization, I sure treasure how those trips helped develop who and where I am today. When I was a junior, I had the opportunity to teach VBS in the Dominican Republic. It was this trip that inspired me to continue to study Spanish.

“I know personally that mission trip opportunities can change a person’s outlook. That’s why I’m excited to be a part of OperationGO here at Lakeside. What a blessing it is to be able to use the “WELS bubble” to reach out with Jesus into the rest of the world.”

>> Teams Louisville (KY1/2): at Hope Lutheran, first team of four students July 26–31 will help canvass 1,000 in the community with the Gospel, and a second team of three August 1–7 will help with all aspects of Summer Bible Camp. >> Team Canada (CAN): at Cross of Life, Mississauga, Ontario (near Toronto), July 4–11, where four students, among other activities, will assist with an outreach soccer camp for community youth that also reaches 250-275 campers with the Gospel. >> Team Jersey (NJ): at Immanuel Lutheran in Long Valley, August 1–9, will assist the local church and its members as they canvass over 500 people in the community and share the message of Christ-crucified with children through VBS. They stress Jesus as Savior, a message not commonly shared in other area church VBS programs.

We invite our Federation members to pray for a smooth and successful first year, and keep ears and eyes open for opportunities to support these Warrior students in their mission trip efforts this spring as they prepare for their trips.
