Llyn Syfaddan History Group

Over thirty members and friends enjoyed our Spring Social at the Black Cock in February. Colin Karne, one of our most senior members, unveiled a recently completed illustrated historical map of the Llangors area. The map which is hand drawn shows some of the many historical buildings and sites that surround the lake. By popular demand we have decided to get the map printed using quality paper at both A3 and A2 size for sale at £4 and £10 respectively. The larger A2 size would be ideal for local businesses who are keen to promote the local area. Any monies raised from the sale will be used to support new projects run by our group. If you would like to place an order please contact myself or Roger Young (658 205).

Our January talk by Steve Morris was well attended. Steve described some of the research undertaken on some of the First World War soldiers listed on war memorials in Powys. Steve has offered to undertake research on those servicemen listed on memorials in our own area and would like to hear from any members ( or non members) who would like to participate in this also. If you would like to join Steve on this please email me at rogerreese2002@yahoo.co.uk and I can pass on his contact details.

A small section of the illustrated history map

A really good idea suggested by another history group is to undertake an audit of all known heritage sites and buildings (including those no longer present, or now used for different purposes than originally intended).Sites where particular human events have taken place could also be included. Do please get in touch if this idea appeals to you or if you have alternative suggestions that could involve a small group of local history enthusiasts.

Work has begun on the creation of our dedicated website by a local professional at no initial cost to our group. We are very fortunate in receiving such help and look forward to the time later in the year when the site will go live.

Plants for dry places

Plants that will tolerate dry conditions are very useful, even in Wales. They are perfect for summer pots and planters and the following are some great plants and planting combinations for a long season from May to September and even into October. Use the biggest pots you have and don’t overcrowd the plants – they need room to establish themselves properly if they are going to perform well all season.

Sun and drought resistant

The narrow grey green leaves of French tarragon, Artemisia dracunculus, look cool and fresh and trail beautifully over the sides of a pot. This is a lovely herb that performs best if picked continuously throughout the summer – use the leaves to flavour white wine vinegar for dressings or use as a salad leaf on its own, or perhaps with finely sliced fennel and lemon.

The tarragon plant could be partnered with Tulbaghia violacea, which has clump forming, edible, strappy leaves and perfumed violet flower umbels in August and September.

The mound forming Erigeron karvinskianus has a profusion of white daisy flowers fading to pink. It flowers all summer, doesn’t need deadheading, and will usefully set seed and establish itself in the dry cracks of walls, steps and paths. For height, use the maroon, scabious flowered Knautia

macedonica or the pink starry flowers of Dianthus carthusianorum, both of which will flower from June to September. Add the blue green evergreen leaves of Festuca festina “Glauca”, a drought resistant grass, and this planter will look good all winter too.

Winter savory, Satureja montana, is a shrubby, evergreen, aromatic herb - rosemary, sage and thyme all in one – covered with tiny white flowers in summer. This is a good companion plant for roses and broad beans and can be used as low hedging for a parterre. The dark green foliage is lifted with the tall, light, airy stems and brilliant pillar box red flowers of a flax plant, Linum grandiflorum rubrum, an annual which will flower all summer and autumn.

Summer wouldn’t be the same without masses of traditional pelargoniums including the edible, scented “Attar of Roses”, and, my favourite, Pelargonium sidoides, which has scalloped velvety pewter grey leaves with a nutmeg scent and sumptuous dark magenta flowers from May to November. Pelargoniums always look best in pots on their own, and anyway tend to crowd out the competition.

Dry shade

Beautiful plants for pots in dry shade need great foliage, early emerging growth and late season show. The male fern Dryopteris felix mas is a classical choice and gives stature in a shady corner. For colour the purplish spears of Amsonia “Blue Ice” first appear in April, followed by pointed apple green leaves, which look good with cut flowers, and clusters of bright blue star flowers in June and July. The foliage stays sharp all summer and then turns butter yellow in autumn – a lovely unusual plant. A woodland aster, Eurybia divaricatus “Eastern Star”, is another great performer.

Shiny, green leaves appear in March to form a mound of bright green leaves held on striking black stems. Then, in September and October, it produces masses of tiny white daisy flowers.

With the exception of the tarragon and pelargoniums, which need frost protection, all of the above can be planted out in the garden after the summer pot display is over. alison@walledgardentreberfydd.com

Llangors Church in Wales School: It is good to see the new school project has started, with groundwork's progressing well.

Due to the extent of the fencing required for Health & Safety requirements, the playing field is now closed for community use. It is anticipated that the new school should be opened early in 2018. However, due to the removal of the old school and landscaping of the new field, the playing field may not be in use until Spring 2019.

The Community Council is in discussion with Powys, School Governors and Llangors Community Centre to ensure continued community use of the play field, with the aim of allowing children of the community access (out of school hours) to a safe, larger and improved play area.

BT Kiosks: We have been notified that all BT kiosks in our community will be removed at some stage. Llangors Community Centre, as a charity, has already adopted Llangors kiosk.

The Community Council has agreed in principle to adopt Llanwern, Pennorth and Talyllyn kiosks, with Llanwern Commoners, Llangasty Hall and the History Group interested in assisting the Community Council by operating the kiosks for their own use. The Community Council is currently in correspondence with BT to agree certain legal issues regarding the purchase agreement.

Appointment of Internal Auditor to the Council The Community Council is required by law to appoint an Internal Auditor who can undertake a review of the Council’s systems and internal controls and audit the annual accounts.

The Internal Auditor will be independent of the Council and will be expected to possess the appropriate level of competence and ideally should have an understanding of local government finance and operations of a Community Council. The majority of this work entails a complete audit around late April/early May to fit in with external audit requirements and would take approximately 4 hours. The work is home based, may be carried out on a voluntary basis or a small fee can be charged, subject to Council approval.

The position is becoming available due to the retirement of the current Internal Auditor who will audit the current 2016/17 accounts. The post will be vacant from 9/5/17. Interested persons may contact the Clerk to the Council for further information. Applications from suitable applicants are invited. A full C.V. and covering letter should be sent to the Clerk at the address above no later than Friday 28th April 2017.

Monthly Coffee Morning The "charity"coffee mornings are on the second Monday of the month at Llangorse Youth & Community Centre, from 10 - 12 noon, and the causes are those used, or supported by local people, or part of our local life. When possible, someone from the relevant organisation comes and tells us a little about it for a few minutes.

Usually there is information about the organisations on boards inside St. Paulinus' Church, which is always open, so do go an have a look.

Anybody is welcome to help, so please feel free to lend a hand, or offer ideas, and any suggestions of causes you would like to support.

Llangors Youth & Community Centre

The children’s play equipment at the community centre is coming to the end of its lifespan and will shortly need to be replaced, probably within the next year. In order that it is replaced by appropriate play equipment, users of the play area, both children and carers, are being asked to complete a short questionnaire.

The committee would also like to know of anyone with experience or particular skills of planning play areas, making or installing play equipment, landscaping etc or has access to any materials that would enhance such a play area eg stone, wood etc.

We will be holding a CPR (First Aid) training session on Wednesday 24th May at 7.00pm.

We will use our practice resuscitation dolls and the DVDs provided by the British Heart Foundation. It will be an informal session with refreshments (and no doubt a few laughs) but all for a very important purpose. No experience required. All welcome.

Progress on hall maintenance is going smoothly. Our new side fire doors are a big improvement on the old, warped ones as these are wind and waterproof. We have, with the support of John Rees, been levelling out the bank on the road side of the hall, creating a more useable and safe access to the kitchen door. It is also a good place for the kids to run around. We have set up a buildings programme for the hall which will enable us to undertake regular maintenance and improvements whilst ensuring we stay within our budget.

Pennorth Chapel - News

December saw the first Welsh Language Service in Pennorth for over 75 years, the Carol Service taken entirely by adult Welsh Learners from the area, accompanied by Rev, Michael Hodgson, was well attended with over 50 people. The Welsh lessons for beginners, taken by Mrs Susan Jevons on Thursday mornings from 9.15am. in the Chapel schoolroom goes from strength to strength.

A coffee Morning was held in The Chapel on Saturday 25th March and raised £250.27 in aid of The British Heart Foundation for all their support to all the villages around the lake in assisting in the provision of Defibrillators. It is intended to follow up our CPR training program and include some basic First aid, please watch notice boards for information.

After ten years we sadly have to say good bye to our very popular Minister, Michael Hodgson, who is moving to fresh pastures in Weybridge Surrey - he will be sorely missed. He and Alan Jevons had worked closely together. The Congregation at Pennorth presented Michael with something for his caravan and some hand painted notelets of Pennorth and The Beacons from originals Painted by Mrs. Muriel Howells, at his last Sunday Service held at Pennorth on 12th March.

Michael’s final Service in The Brecon Beacons Group Pastorate, will take place in The Plough Chapel Lion Street. Brecon at 2.30pm on Sunday 9th April followed by refreshments, everyone will be most welcome. Michael will leave a great vacuum in the community.

SSAFA: Helping ex servicemen and women and their families in need SSAFA stands for SOLDIERS SAILORS AIRMEN AND FAMILIES ASOCIATION. Recently we have been rebranded as “the Armed Forces charity”. Please look on the internet to read about all aspects of SSAFA. In Powys, our job is to help ex Servicemen and women and their families who are “in need”. This includes both Regular and Reserve personnel.

There is no age limit, and one day's service is sufficient for an ex Regular. When funds are very low, the need could range from a washing machine to house repairs; perhaps a course to help get back to work or help with a bill; sometimes just advice or “signposting” in the case of, for example, debt or mental health problems.

The SSAFA are unpaid volunteers. In simple terms if you have had military service and are “in need” contact them and they will take it from there.

Whatever your age and military background, if you have ever served in our Forces, we are here for you and those who depend on you.

Whoever you are, you can be certain that your enquiry will be confidential and that you will always be treated with dignity and respect.

Treberfydd house is open to visit in the afternoons from Tuesday 18th April to Monday 1 May, where there will be an art exhibition of work by Meg Stevens.

Mabinogion touring exhibition with local artist Helly Powell Helly Powell is a Welsh textile artist living in Monmouthshire where she creates “Fauxidermy” sculptural pieces which have caught the imagination of many.

Best known for her “Parc Lodge” collection, Helly has joined forces with Welsh textile mill, Melin Tregwynt and Crickhowell’s oriel CRiC gallery to create a new collection, “The Beasts of the Mabinogion”, breathing life into the native wildlife of an ancient mystical Welsh landscape.

In celebration of the national ‘Year Of Legends’, the exhibition will go on tour, starting with an exhibition at Melin Tregwynt, a small family owned textile mill on the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast from 27 March to 5 May 2017.

Eifion Griffiths from Melin Tregwynt said, “Helly Powell’s ‘Fauxidermy’ sculptures are simply beautiful to look at. Her work appears so life-like that each animal could have just stepped out of the Welsh landscape. This combined with the subtle mix of selected fabrics she has used gives each piece a magical quality. We’re pleased that our fabrics provided inspiration for these majestic creatures, and are excited to be one of the venues for this touring exhibition.”

Suzette Pratten from the oriel CRiC gallery, Crickhowell added, “We are delighted to be involved in this project which showcases the tradition of weaving kept alive at the Mill alongside the creative use of the textiles by Helly who has been inspired by the early Welsh collection of tales from which the Mabinogion takes its name. Visitors to the Mill will be able to see sculptures based on Rhiannon’s horse, the boar hunt and the stag hunt, alongside smaller pieces. Combining a visit to the working mill, with an opportunity to see this unique exhibition and explore the Pembrokeshire National Park with its spectacular beaches, cliffs and coastal footpaths all within five minutes easy walk from the Mill, are the ingredients of a wonderful experience.”

The Grapevine - April 2017

LLANGORSE LAKE BIG SWIM 2017 Saturday September 30th - 2pm Thanks to the on-going generosity of the Blackham Family and the lake users group, we’ll once again be holding the Big Swim in September. The last three events have been a great success and have brought hundreds of people to the lake, not just on race weekend, but throughout the year.

The swimmers will be able to choose between four distances (1.5km, 3km, 4.5km and 6km) as they enjoy the only chance in the year to swim in the beautiful Llangorse Lake. The swim will be chip timed and all competitors will get a Llangorse Big Swim medal, silicone swimming hat, food and drink from the floating aid station and unlimited hot drinks, biscuits and cake.

We are delighted to be helping to raise money for Llangorse Sailing Club who will be assisting by marking the course and helping with the water safety. We’re also pleased to be able to help our friends at Brecon Canoe Club, Brecon Cricket Club and Llangorse Judo Club who are providing marshals.

We’re offering discounted entry for local people - just get in touch if you fancy a dip!
