Local History Group and Railway Project Progress is well under way on the formation of a local history group to be called “Llyn Syfaddan History Group” and on planning for the railway archive project. We have already held two well attended meetings, kindly hosted by Llanfihangel Community Hall. Our meetings take place at 7.30 pm on the first Monday of each month. Meetings so far have focussed on the long term aims, organisation and administration of the history group and the priorities for the railway project. Although the railway project will be the first project run by the history group, other aspects of local history will be explored in the future. In addition, we intend to organise a series of talks given by local and guest speakers from further afield. The name of the group was chosen because it represents all the communities around the lake. As The Grapevine is delivered to all households in our community, we will use it to publicise our events and to keep you up to date with our news and progress. Work on the railway project will concentrate

on collecting photographs and personal stories which will be put into an archive. We will also be joining the Brecknock History Forum which is made up of representatives from other local history groups and historical organisations. This group meets every two months to share information and ideas, and is a very good source of professional expertise and guidance. In the next edition of The Grapevine we hope to give you information on the history group and planned events. If you would like to be actively involved in any way with the history group or railway project please do come along to our monthly meetings - the next history group and railway project planning meeting will be on Tuesday 6th May, 7.30pm at Llangasty Hall. For more details, get in touch with Roger Young 658205 (rogyoung@outlook.com) or Roger Reese 658726 (rogerreese2002@yahoo.co.uk).

Llangorse Lake Triathlon & Swim - September 20th / 21st, 2014 In September, Llangorse Lake will be the base for the first Llangorse Triathlon and Swim. The events are being organised by two local triathletes, Nicola Goodwin and Kylie Mansfield, who together have more than 25 years of experience in the sport and have represented the Great Britain Age Group teams at numerous European and World Long Distance events. The Llangorse Big Swim will take place in the afternoon of Saturday September 20th followed by the Middle Distance Triathlon which starts early on Sunday September 21st. “We both love Llangorse Lake and regularly cycle and run around the area and we’ve always thought that it would be a perfect venue for a race and, thanks to the generosity of the Blackham family, Llangorse Sailing Club and the Llangorse Lake Users Group, the swim and triathlon will take place for the first time in 2014. We hope to involve as many local companies and people as possible in the event and our aim is to boost the local economy and hopefully make it an annual event” said Nicola. “We aim to keep the disruption for villagers and other lake users down to a minimum. The swimmers will enter the water from the sailing club site and we’re hoping to be able to assist in their clubhouse rebuilding project by making a donation to their funds. The parking will be managed by our marshals and only a small area of the common will be in use on the Sunday for the transition area, where the bikes are stored before and after the cycling section. We will be responsible for all of the organisation and insurance for the event” Nicola and Kylie will be making regular visits to Llangorse throughout the year and are keen to speak to anybody who would like to be involved in the event. You can see more about the races on their website – www.llangorsetri.com or contact them at llangorsetri@hotmail.co.uk

Talgarth YFC - The Place To Be! Talgarth Young Farmers Club was formed in 1937 - it is the eldest Club in Brecknock and was well renowned for many years until its closure in the late 90s. After its reformation in 2007, Club numbers have gone from strength to strength and the whole Club is extremely proud to be hosting the 70th Brecknock Rally and Barn Dance on the 7th June 2014. The Young Farmers Movement is a leading youth organisation across Britain, encouraging members, aged between 10-26, to learn and develop a vast array of skills from hedge laying, flower arranging, shearing, cookery and much more. It is a great place to meet like-minded people, make friends for life and a great place to have fun. You don’t need to be a farmer to join either! The average age of our Club members is 13 years old and we are on the hunt for past members and supporters to rally around and help support the Club during this prestigious event. Talgarth YFC boosts several members from around the Lake and is keen to encourage more to join in the fun. Anyone interested in joining our Club or supporting us at the Rally please don’t hesitate to contact Rally Secretary and Club member Mrs. Kayleigh Rees-Jones on 01874 658713.

Llangasty Village Hall - update The story so far this year

Hall maintenance

For the first time, we organised an AGM which was followed by a quiz. This took place in February and was very well attended. We had very positive feedback about the quiz so we have decided to make this an annual event. Many thanks to everyone who supported us. In March, we held a craft fair to support local producers. Excellent fresh coffee, teas, cakes and ploughmans lunches were available so everyone went away refreshed. Our next coffee morning will be in November ready to give you ideas for Christmas presents from local sources.

The hall is run by the Llangasty Hall Restoration Group for the benefit and wellbeing of the community. Use of the hall by the community can continue for as long as we are able to run and finance the hall’s upkeep. Your support is therefore vital. It is a great “little” hall in a beautiful location and we want to ensure that it remains a community asset for the future. Membership of the group is open to anyone in the community who is willing to give some time, bring new ideas and generally muck in. If you are interested please give any of us a call on 658 726.

Red Stone Brewery Ollie Dent, brewer and co-founder at Redstone Brewery in Llangorse, started out using a homebrew kit. From this grew a passion for brewing and he soon shunned the kits for using real grains and hops. Within a short period Ollie was producing bottled “Yeoman Ale” for the Tower of London bar. However, demand soon outstripped supply and a move to larger kit was required if he was to make a go of this new business. Having now teamed up with Cliff Ross they approached local farmer Deri Morgan looking for space to brew. In March 2013 the conversion of the redundant Edwardian granary on Tynewydd Farm, Llangorse was complete and a second hand brewery installed with a capacity of around 14 firkins (around 1,000 pints) per week. The brewery opened with a bang and four brews went to market at a wellattended launch party to overwhelming local support. With some early successes and beer going out to pubs and festivals from Pembrokeshire to Reading a tough summer was had and the realities of producing a volume product at a consistent quality became apparent. Following much head-scratching; study; and research & development the wheels were rolling again by the autumn bringing some new challenges. It was impossible to expand the customer base and keep existing customers consistently supplied using the hard fought set-up. Additionally a lot had been learned about brewing since starting out and a new process had been devised. So a bold decision was taken to close down in December. The brewing area was expanded; new, larger kit was commissioned and the number of vessels grew from four to nine. With great trepidation Redstone started brewing again in February with an expanded 45 firkin (around 3200 pints) per week capacity and a refined brewing process which relies on holding the beer in conditioning tanks at a very low temperature to infuse additional flavour and aroma from hops after fermentation. The first beers hit the pumps at the end of March and are selling as far as London. In terms of the future Redstone will continue to turn out established favourites, Gorsey & Clipper, and experiment with new hops and grains to produce specials such as best bitter, Bois Bach. It is hoped that an assistant brewer be added to the team by the end of the year. Visitors are welcome just email info@redstone-brewery.com or call Ollie on 07581 878 604.

Walled Garden Treberfydd, Llangasty, Brecon,Powys, Wales LD3 7PX www.walledgardentreberfydd.com Beautiful plant nursery set in the old walled garden of a Victorian Gothic house. Focusing on hardy plants grown in Wales which are structural, unusual, edible, herbal or fragrant.

The Walled Garden from April to June VISIT

GARDENWORK

Treberfydd House - Private country house built during the Gothic Revival movement of the 19th century. House and gardens open to the public from 17 to 30 May and includes Photo Art as part of Powys Art Month. On May 17 there is a plant fair in aid of Brecon Cathedral. A great opportunity to tour the house and see the collection of specimen trees on the Tree Walk. Afterwards come and visit the Walled Garden Treberfydd where you can buy hardy plants, flowers and gifts, seek advice on your garden plans and view and buy beautiful botanical water colour illustrations by Rae Gervis, some of which are illustrated here.

Now is the time to really stay ahead of the weeds that will be emerging faster than your valued plants. Don’t let them become established. Time spent eradicating them now as soon as they appear will be a huge time saver later in the season. Just make sure you can actually differentiate between a free weed and an expensive purchased plant.

BOOK LIST A Taste of the Unexpected by Mark Diacono. This book is filled with wonderful, unusual, edible plants that you can grow in your own garden such as Lovage, Szechuan pepper and Hemerocallis or day lilies. Practical growing advice is accompanied by great recipes. We have many of the plants for sale at the nursery.

Page 10

PLANTING At the Walled Garden we are really thinking about creating structure through the seasons with trees and shrubs as the backdrop to the perennial planting that will follow. From April to June we will see magnolia, lilac and fruit trees in blossom. Sour fruits, Morello cherries, gooseberries and currants, will be planted in the shade of the North facing wall. These can then be underplanted with shade loving plants that will draw attention to themselves and lighten the darker spaces. We will also plant strong edible landscaping plants such as Orach, Angelica, Cardoons and Fennel to add height and drama to the flower beds.

PLANT LIST Acanthus mollis, or Bear’s Breeches Glorious, interesting, very hardy herbaceous perennial which you can pretty much grow anywhere – yes really! Striking, vigorous, upright plant that grows to around 1.5m by 1.5m with large, glossy dark green leaves and, in late summer, tall racemes of white flowers with dusky purple bracts. The Corinthian columns of ancient Greece are decorated with carvings of Acanthus leaves – how much more architectural can a plant be…
