Next History Talk The Life and Times of Henry Vaughan, by Elizabeth Siberry. Thursday, 6th July. Doors open at 7.00pm for 7.15pm start. The venue is Llangasty Hall. Entry is free to all History Group members or £3 at the door for non-members. Elizabeth Siberry is an eminent historian who has a passion for promoting the work of “local lad” Henry Vaughan whose writing and poetry has had a great influence on his own and subsequent generations. If there is sufficient demand, the Llangasty Hall committee will provide a ploughmans and refreshments to follow the talk at a cost of £6 per head. Please let us know by 4th July if you want to reserve a ploughmans on 01874 658726.
BT Phone Box in Talyllyn We are making smooth progress with our proposal to adopt the phone box in Talyllyn. The plan is to convert it into a Local History Information Point. We have received help and support from the Community Council and hope the hand-over from BT will be completed in the next couple of weeks.
Llangorse Lake History Map There has been very steady demand for these maps. We are pleased that they can now be purchased at the Gatehouse Teashop in Bwlch, Talybont Stores, Ty Mawr Kitchen Garden and at the Retreat in Llangasty or directly from the History Group on 01874 658726. If you run a B&B, guesthouse, holiday home or campsite we recommend these maps as guests will find them very interesting and hopefully they will encourage visitors to explore our beautiful area even more.
Brecknock History Festival This event takes place over the month of September. It consists of a range of “open access” history events organised by local history groups around Powys. We are very pleased that Anstie and Christine Blackham have offered to open their house and gardens as our contribution to the festival. Their house will be open over the weekend of 16th and 17th September, from 11.00am to 3.00pm. The house and grounds have a fascinating history and also have magnificent views of Llangorse Lake, specimen trees and shrubs, and much more. Entry will be free. Refreshments and cakes will be on sale, all for a good cause. Further information will be available in the next month.
Late Summer In the Walled Garden June is such an overwhelming month in the garden with roses, thalictrum, paeonies, nepeta, lavender and sweet peas at their peak combination. A true midsummer dream. For July in the Walled Garden though this is just the beginning as now the late summer flowering plants really break into their stride and steal the show. These include the many varieties of verbena, eupatorium, aster, dahlia, achillea, helenium, helianthus, rudbeckia, phlox, anemone and hesperantha, aswell as romneya coulteri, macleaya cordata and, my current favourite, Malva sylvestris var. mauritiana ‘Bibor Felho’. A very long name for a plant with a very long lasting impact. Gorgeous crinkled tissue dark purple flowers that unfurl in May and then keep emerging right through until October. Big soft leaves

and strong vertical stems. This plant looks good all through the summer and is best at the back or middle of a deep border. It won’t crowd anything out or allow itself to be crowded out, as the flowering branches rise 2m tall above and through everything around them. It keeps on and on flowering, doesn’t need deadheading, and later in the season the taller flowering limbs can be pulled forward to fill the gaps left by plants that have finished their display. There are plants here for full sun, full shade or a little of both, in colours ranging from the hot and heady reds, oranges and yellows to the cooler yet still intense blues, pinks and purples.

Councillors: The Community Council would like to thank Mel Davies for her work as County Councillor both within our community and the various committees and groups Mel was associated with. Mel was a governor of both Llangors Church in Wales School and Gwernyfed High School and it was her voice that helped gain the build of our new school and the successful campaign to retain Gwernyfed High School. We welcome Emily Durrant as our new County Councillor and look forward to working with her to promote and address issues within our community. We thank our retiring Community Councillors Dave Jones and Dyddanwy Pugh, both who worked hard for community causes. Welcome to Simon Bailey of Pennorth who becomes a Community Councillor for the Llanfihangel Talyllyn Ward. Become a Dementia Friend: At our Annual Public Meeting we were given an excellent presentation by two members of the Alzheimer’s Society. We were asked if dementia friendly training could be rolled out within the community with the aim of helping local people residents suffering the dementia. Thanks for helping our community: The Community Council would like to thank the many individuals within the community who litter pick and cut grass areas, helping our community to look at it’s best throughout the year. It has been recognised that someone has strimmed around and planted the tubs at the base of the Llanfihangel Tal-y-Llyn signs on the entrances to the village, and our thanks go to those individuals. Llangors Community Kiosks: The Community Council is now finally in a position to hand three redundant telephone kiosks over to new owners. Pennorth, Tal-y-Llyn and Llanwern kiosks will be handed over to Llangasty Hall, Llyn Syfaddan History Group and Waunymynach Commoners. Repairs and painting will be carried out with the aim to utilise the kiosks and promote the groups work. Llangors Community Benefit project: Willmott Dixon who are currently constructing the new primary school at Llangors have
asked the Community Council if there is a project in Llangors village they can assist with while they are on site, which will be until March 2018. This will be “in kind” works, possibilities include landscaping, painting etc. Llangors Community Council together with Llangors Youth and Community Centre and Cllr Emily Durrant are working with Willmott Dixon to identify a suitable community benefit project. The community has been asked to provide ideas.

County Councillor Emily Durrant It has been several weeks since I began my role as your County Councillor but my feet are yet to touch the ground. It has been a wonderful whirlwind of learning and activity and I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed every minute. I cannot thank you enough for putting your trust in me and I will endeavour to ensure that trust has been well-placed. I appreciate that not everyone voted for me and will work hard to ensure that the whole community feels represented. After all, that is what I am here to do, so if you have thoughts or ideas, or need representation, please do get in touch. I am pleased to report that the Council has been a very welcoming environment and the new Cabinet have so far proved open and engaging. I have secured the committee seats that I think can make a real difference to us and have been appointed to the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, which is particularly relevant to where we live. I have also taken on the role of school governor at both Llangorse and Gwernyfed schools and am looking forward to doing what I can to keep these schools going from strength to strength. The most enjoyable part of this job so far has been meeting so many more people in the community and getting to work with both the Community Council and the Community Hall Committee. Together, I am confident we can make a difference and I would like to encourage more people to get involved. There are numerous exciting plans ahead. I want to keep you informed of what I am doing in as many ways as possible. More importantly, I want to hear from you, so please come and see me at one of my surgeries if you can. Bwlch with Altitude Challenge 2017

3rd June dawned bright and dry – perfect for Bwlch with Altitude Challenge (BWAC) 2017 . Seventeen teams entered across the three challenges – 12 miles for walkers; 16 miles for mountain bikers and 5 miles for families. And there was the mental challenge too. Twenty questions about the local area – the teams couldn't just pass the information boards without studying them as these would provide the answers! The more competitive teams were keen to make sure they got as many points as possible – and points mean prizes! BWAC was well supported and we are very grateful for the prizes which were all donated by local businesses: Beacons Farm Shop & Welsh Venison Centre; The Gate Cafe – Y Gwyllt, Bwlch; The New Inn, Bwlch; Llangorse Multi Activity Centre; Lakeside Caravan and Camping Park; Ty Cariad, Brecon; Bikes & Hikes, Talybont on Usk; Brynteg Natural Therapies; Crickhowell Adventure and Latte Da in Crickhowell. Thanks also to Black Mountains Guiding for supplying the sport idents that allowed competitors to check-in at each checkpoint. This event has a great following but it could not happen without the support of the Llangorse & Bwlch Rural Alliance and the fantastic team at Bwlch Village Hall who were there to provide refreshments and encouragement throughout the day. The day was topped off with excellent live music from local band, Hired Gun, playing as part of this year's Bwlchfest. This popular local music festival has included performance from Uskulele Ukelele Band, Bwlch Choir, and local duet Songhouse.

Bwlch Creative Crafters Bwlch Creative Crafters welcome crafters of all ages (male and female) and abilities. We have members who are completely new to crafting, through to those who have been doing it for years. The group meet in Bwlch Village Hall every Thursday night: 7-9pm. We have members from other villages, so you don’t need to live in Bwlch to join us. Our interests range from knitting, crochet, lace making, toy making, cross-stitch, decoupage, embroidery and quilting. Everybody will find something of interest. There is not a membership fee; each session costs £2.50, which includes tea or coffee. All ages and levels of knowledge are welcome – come and join us for coffee and a chat, and to see our crafting. If you would like to join us, we look forward to seeing you.

We are really pleased that a number of wedding receptions have taken place at our lovely hall during the spring and early summer (see photo) and would like to wish all the happy couples a wonderful future together. In May, we held our AGM which was well attended. The AGM was followed by a presentation of slides showing the battle fields of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift in South Africa as they are today. During May, we also held a refresher course on basic first aid and the use of the defibrillator which meant “hands-on” practice using the mannequins. Another session will be held in the Autumn. The next event for your diary is on Thursday 6th July. The Llyn Syfyddan History Group will be holding a talk about “The Life and Times of Henry Vaughan” given by Elizabeth Siberry. Doors open at 7.00pm. Following the talk we will provide a ploughmans and a glass of refreshment if there is sufficient demand (please see the Llyn Syfaddan History Group's article for further information).

Thank you again to everyone who makes these mornings go with a swing and raises money for good causes. These causes are used, or supported by local people, or are part of or local life. Sometimes a representative of the month's "good cause" comes along and tells a little about it. (Now that life is returning to relative normality I hope to resume putting information on the noticeboards in the church, which is always open.) Peoples' suggestions are welcome, and included in turn. Thank you to the cake-cookers, kitchen- and hall-workers. It may be twee, but it's true, that many hands make light work. We receive appreciative "thank you" letters from the organisations, but occasionally it is quite touching to see how pleased they are to have been thought of. Advance Notice - A community project for Llangorse Lake villages WHAT? A modern production of the mystery cycle (Adrian Henri’s ‘The Wakefield Mystery Cycle’) WHERE? Mini-performances in our Lake Churches with the full production being run at Llangorse Village Hall.
WHEN? Show to run Easter 2018. Call Out for on and off-stage roles September 2018. Initial rehearsals and read-throughs to start before Christmas. (Nothing too time consuming, honest!) Regular rehearsals (weekly / fortnightly) from January. WHO? YOU! This will be a celebration within our own community and the emphasis is very
much on creating a fun – and stress free – experience! This is a community event and is open to all who would like to take part both on-stage and off. You do not need to have had professional experience – all that is needed is a willingness to take part!
WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE? Each village will be able to put on a scene or two of between
5 – 10 minutes long which we will then ‘stitch together’ in to a final performance with a party to follow! We will put the mini-shows on in our churches around the lake with two full-length productions in Llangorse Village Hall. Profits to venues / local causes. PLEASE let me know if you are interested in any way! It can’t happen without you! My focus is to create a community project pulling together people from all walks of life. We will be able to celebrate our community spaces (village halls and churches) and hopefully, meet new people, forge new friendships and broaden our community network even further!
