Fall brings changes in temperature and leaf colors. In Williamsburg, fall also brings arts. And lots of it. Entering its sixth year, Williamsburg Fall Arts will pack the schedule with more than 100 arts and culinary events throughout September and October. Some highlights include the inaugural “Big Bluesy,” a two-day blues festival presented by CultureFix, as well as the National Marine Art Conference, presented by the American Society of Marine Artists. September marks a time when summer seasons end and fall seasons begin. This month, we look at the end of Blue Talon Bistro’s summer movie night series, while previewing the start of the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra’s 2016-2017 season. There’s more than just art and music to enjoy in September, everything from the annual Kiwanis Club’s Shrimp Feast to the firstever Bier Fest at Busch Gardens, celebrating more than 200 years of Oktoberfest traditions. Classes recently began at the College of William and Mary, but the college plays host to more than just undergraduate and graduate study. The Christopher Wren Association offers an abundance of lifelong learning classes for local senior citizens. This month, the magazine provides a look into some local businesses, including MAD about Chocolate which serves up a unique array of chocolate treats. Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra readies for 2016-2017 season By Heather Bridges Music Director Janna Hymes programmed the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra’s 2016-2017 season long before the orchestra announced, in April, a change in name from Williamsburg Symphonia, its name since 1984. The name change, she said, was icing on the cake. “I think it’s going to create a new visibility and awareness for who we are and what it is that we do, within the community and beyond,” Hymes said. “And that’s why I think it’s so important.” The orchestra came together 32 years ago as a volunteer ensemble, intending to provide classical music education to children. Today, it’s a professional 10

orchestra of nearly 50 musicians that, in addition to presenting five Masterworks concerts each season, reaches approximately 7,500 students through education initiatives, emphasizes community outreach and, in January, made its international debut at the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts. The new name better reflected that identity. “I know that we’re being recognized by organizations and individuals in a way that we weren’t before,” Hymes said of the name change. Now, heading into the new season with the new name, there’s
optimism, Hymes said. “It’s a very natural optimism,” she said. “It was the right move at the right time.” The Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra will launch into the season Oct. 10 and 11, as rising soprano Julia Bullock joins the orchestra to perform works by Villa-Lobos, Poulenc, Weill and Gershwin. Hymes expressed excitement for the whole season, one she carefully crafted. “I want (the musicians) to love what they’re playing, and I want the audience to love what they’re hearing,” she said. recognized pianist Alessio Bax will perform with the orchestra in a program that includes Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 5 in E-flat major. The final Masterworks concert in May will be a season finale to remember, as violinist Elena Urioste joins the orchestra to perform Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 4 in F minor. There’s even more in store this season, with the annual Holiday Pops Concert scheduled for December and the Cabaret and Cocktails jazz concert in early 2017. Expect the unexpected, too. “We’re exploring leaving the concert hall and doing some more unique programming for different audiences and diverse audiences,” Hymes said, “and that’s something that’s extremely important to me.”

Yorktown Arts Stroll
a taste of small-town America By Steve Vaughan Yorktown will hold its fifth annual Arts Stroll Sept. 25. The event, supported by the county, is an attempt to draw visitors to the historic Yorktown Riverwalk Landing. York County had dedicated September as “Art Month.” Kathleen Wahl, President of Yorktown Arts Foundation, in coordination with Kristi Olsen, York County Tourism, collaborated with county representatives, business owners
and marketing/advertising representatives to map out that first event. The goal of the event is to “exude small town America,” as people stroll about shopping and talking to the artists, who will be located at the Freight Shed, at local businesses and in alcoves along Water Street. This year’s event is Sunday, Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be 30 artists on the Riverwalk Landing, as well as entertainment and food vendors. The Freight Shed is the center of
festivities. Visitors can meet the artists and watch as some of them demonstrate their work. In addition, Yorktown restaurants will feature lunch and dinner specials. The Stroll is sponsored by the Yorktown Arts Foundation, York County and through special funding from the Yorktown Arts Commission In the future, the Yorktown Arts Foundation hopes to move events up to Yorktown’s historic Main Street as well.
Prepare for some serious shanties By Jack Jacobs The Annual Folk Festival at Watermen’s Museum promises a varied lineup on the banks of the York River on Sept. 24 and 25. The festival’s lineup features a wide range of acts, with musicians playing everything from soul to bluegrass to country, according to the museum’s website. Vendors like
Ben and Jerry’s and Carrot Tree Kitchens will keep the audience fueled for the festival, which is now in its third year. “It’s a freewheeling event,” said Steve Ormsby, board president of the museum. The event will be held on the museum grounds in Yorktown. About six acts are currently confirmed for the festival, Ormsby said. Among the lineup is Shanty-

Grass, a band made up of Watermen’s Museum staff and volunteers who play sea shanties and bluegrass tunes. The bands will take to the museum’s three stages for the event and with some acts planned to perform simultaneously the event will fill the air with music, Ormsby said. About 500 people are expected each day of the festival, Ormsby said. Admission is free. Food and beverage proceeds go to fund museum programming. The festival runs on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum will accept additional musical acts until the day of the event, Ormsby said. Crafters, re-enactors, artists and storytellers are also encouraged to join the event. Call the museum at (757) 887-2641 for more information.

Full stomach, full heart By Adrienne Mayfield Calling all crustacean lovers – the Williamsburg Kiwanis Club’s “All You Can Eat” Shrimp Feast isn’t for the faint of stomach. The club’s 37th annual shrimp feast will feature the classics – about 1,800 pounds of succulent shrimp and as many juicy hotdogs as your stomach can handle with fixings on the side. Wash down hot hush puppies, baked beans and coleslaw with a cold beer from Virginia Beer Co. – or a glass of wine for a little extra dough. Members of the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg can eat – but that’s not all they’re good for, said Club President Geoff Suter.
The club is part of Kiwanis International, an organization that focuses on serving children. “Our overall goal as a global service organization is to improve the world one child at a time, one community at a time, starting here in Williamsburg,” Suter said. The shrimp feast is one of the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg’s annual fundraisers to support the Historic Triangle’s kids. A full stomach will lead to a full heart – all proceeds from this year’s feast will benefit a number of Kiwanis youth programs as well as local organizations that work with children: Avalon Center, Bacon Street Youth and Family Services, Dream Catchers Thera-

Williamsburg Fall Arts celebrates sixth year By Heather Bridges
From a two-day blues music festival to a national marine art exhibition, Williamsburg Fall Arts returns for its sixth year, more robust than ever. More than 100 arts and culinary events pack the September and October calendars. Terry Buntrock, Arts Coordinator for the Williamsburg region, said Fall Arts was created Town Creek Harbor as a way to boost tourism in fall, a time when tourist numbers in Williamsburg typically dipped. The initiative essentially served to unify and promote the abundance of art and artists Greater Williamsburg already contained. This year, in addition to longtime favorites, such as An Occasion for the Arts and Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s outdoor performances, Williamsburg Fall Arts-goers have some exciting new events to check out. For one, the American Society of Marine Artists will open its 17th National Exhibition at the Muscarelle Museum of Art. The society will additionally host an inaugural National Marine Art Conference in Williamsburg. “That’s just the gift of a lifetime to have that,” Buntrock said. This year’s Fall Arts has much music to offer. CultureFix, a local events nonprofit, will present the first “Big Bluesy,” a two-day blues music festival featuring 16 bands. To close out Fall Arts, Williamsburg native and country music star Caanan Smith will take the stage at Lake Matoaka. Year to year, you’re never quite sure what Williamsburg Fall Arts might include. The ‘Island of freedom’ By Jack Jacobs Are you curious about the experience of free blacks in the pre-Civil War South? Local author Lafayette Jones will deliver a presentation on the history of a local free black settlement on Sept. 10 at Freedom Park. Jones is a descendant of the inhabitants of the settlement and wrote a book on the subject, “My Great, Great, Grandfather’s Journey to an Island of Freedom in the Middle of Slavery.” The book focuses on the experiences of local blacks from their journey from Africa to their arrival in the Williamsburg area. He will sign copies of his book at the event. Jones’ presentation will explore the history of the settlement along with the lives and accomplishments of inhabitants and their descendants. Some of these individuals rose to become bankers and doctors in the decades prior to the Civil War, Jones said. The event provides “a different idea of what slavery was,” Jones said. Not all black people were enslaved in the years before the Civil War, and those who were free had a different experience than what is traditionally
understood as the black experience of the time period, he added. The settlement was founded in the early 1800’s and was the residence of about seven or eight families by the time of the Civil War 60 years later, Jones said. Howl-O-Scream By Steve Vaughan Busch Gardens Williamsburg is hoping that the Big Top translates to big scares at his year’s Howl-OScream, which begins Sept. 23 and ends Oct. 30. Both of this year’s additions -- a haunted house and a “terrortory” -- have circus themes. The new haunted house is Circo Sinistro. “No one knows when or where the tents will rise, but all who see them are drawn to find out what lies inside Circo Sinistro at Busch Gardens Williamsburg’s Howl-OScream. The park’s new haunted house is not of this world and not of this time – but beware, what you see, you soon will be,” is how Busch Gardens describes the new attraction. This year’s new “Terror-tory”
is “Sideshow Square.” Busch Gardens promises “haunts, curiosities and plenty of scare to make you shriek” on the way to the Big Top. “Unearthed: Scarlett’s Revenge,” 2015’s new haunted house returns this year, along with “Bitten,” “Catacombs,” “Cornered,” “Deadline” and “Lumberhack.” This year’s scare areas, along with “Sideshow Square,” are “Demon Street,” “Ripper Row,” “Wendigo Woods” and “Vampire Point.” Musical shows during HowlO-Scream 2016 include “Fiends,” “Monster Stomp” – which this year takes a rock ‘n’ roll take on Jack the Ripper — and “Night Beats.”

WANT TO GO? Howl-O-Scream operates Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. During October the scares go on until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Regular park admission gets you into the scare areas. Busch Gardens Williamsburg cautions that Howl-OScream is not recommended for young children due to the intensity of some of the scares. Dogs encouraged to drool at the pool By Ryan McKinnon Take your dog for a dip! On Sept. 10, the Heritage Humane Society is hosting their Drool in the Pool event at the Chickahominy Riverfront Park Pool. The pool will be open to all canines who would like to get in one last swim before summer’s end. The rules are reversed for the day at the pool. Dogs are allowed to swim, but their human companions must watch from the side. The Humane Society will have lifeguards in the pool to help older dogs into the water and make sure there is no ruff-housing. Last year, more than 60 dogs joined in the fun. Planners say the event will feature food, music and pet-supply vendors, and the Humane Society will be bringing a handful of pups
looking for a new home. Interested pooches (or their owners) can purchase tickets for $10. All proceeds from the event will go toward the Humane Society. The event lasts from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., weather permitting. Check

Eventually, Glen and his wife, Linda, decided to focus solely on installing gutters. “We were focused and determined to do one thing and do it well,” said Glen Starling. “So, we set out to find the best gutter system available to offer to our customers. Outdoor movies at the Blue Talon Bistro By Steve Vaughan For those not quite ready to let go of summer, there’s still movie night at the Blue Talon. For one more week at least. The final film in the 10-week Sunday film series — “Back to the Future” — will be presented Sunday, Sept. 4. The films, each sponsored by one or more local businesses in conjunction with the Blue Talon, have highlighted family-friendly favorites from “Cinderella” to “Minions” to “Zootopia” to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Area businesses that cooperated on the film series were Retro’s Good Eats, Aromas, Baskin-Robbins, Alewerks Brewing Company, Wythe Candy & Gourmet Shop, Merchants Square, Chesapeake Bank, William and Mary Bookstore, Parks Orthodontics and the Cheese Shop. Their sponsorship allowed the movies to be presented for free. Free popcorn for the whole summer was provided by Middle Peninsula Insurance. As usual, movie goers are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and to enjoy movies under the stars with friends and family.

chocolate, chocolate chips, and nuts; the Bourbon Oatmeal cookie with cranberries, raisins and a touch of bourbon; and the Tribe Cookie, which has milk chocolate, white chocolate, pistachios, and a little lemon zest. But the restaurant also serves up lunch and dinner, which includes the Savory Cheesecake, the nutty chicken salad, and pizza with Billy Bread, which the café has delivered daily from Billy Bread Bakery in Richmond and uses in several of its menu items. “We’ve pretty much stayed true to the original restaurant,” he says. “We’ve just broadened our menu. It’s a small menu but eclectic.” Riordan has years of experience in the food service industry. He managed food services for dining halls in Boston College and Harvard University and also worked for Domino’s Pizza throughout New

England and Auntie Anne’s pretzel company in Pennsylvania before settling in Williamsburg two years ago. Buying MAD About Chocolate seemed a natural choice, and he is in the thick of things at the restaurant on a daily basis. Meanwhile, his wife is president and CEO of The Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance. “I like the hustle and bustle of working in the restaurant industry, the adrenaline rush,” he says. “It’s not a nine to five experience. I also like being hands on with the staff.” Riordan has 10 employees who help him with the operations at the restaurant. “I do a lot of the baking,” he says. “Everything is handmade fresh daily. Everyone pitches in.” As the business continues to grow, Riordan hopes to gain more exposure through advertising, community outreach, and social media.
MAD About Chocolate has an active Facebook page. Riordan’s future goals include expanding the café’s online business so he can ship cookies across the country, and one day opening a unit currently used for storage space for more dining at MAD about Chocolate. “Customer contact is the number one thing I like about this business,” he says. “We have a dedicated customer base that we’d like to broaden.”

Williamsburg area is hotbed
for lifelong learning By Ryan McKinnon Love to learn? Williamsburg and the surrounding areas have opportunities galore for those whose education didn’t end once they left school. The Christopher Wren Association: For 25 years this mostly volunteer-run organization has tapped into the expertise of Williamsburg residents to offer a wide range of courses. What began in 1991 with eight courses has grown to 146 courses, with topics ranging from the British monarchy to nuclear submarines. Although originally geared strictly toward retirees, the association lifted that ban in 2013 and now classes are open to anyone. James City Parks and Recreation offers a variety of classes to keep you active year-round. Classes are computer-based, and range from basic computer skills like how to use a mouse to job searching skills, such as resume writing. The Quarterpath Recreation Center offers a Silver Sneakers class, which is an exercise program to increase strength and flexibility for day-to-day life. The district also offers free English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes for people who want to learn English while also learning about United States history, government and culture. Bassett Hall By Brandy Centolanza One of the buildings at Colonial Williamsburg most steeped in history is Bassett Hall. The house, on Francis Street, and its grounds was the spring and fall vacation home of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and his wife, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. The pair was instrumental in the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg in the late 1920s and 1930s. The Rockefeller family bequeathed Bassett Hall to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in 1979 with nearly all the Rockefellers’ personal belongings intact. The land that Bassett Hall sits on was gifted to Colonel Philip Johnson, a member of the House of Burgesses, in the 18th century. Johnson built the house, which was later renamed Bassett Hall in honor of one of its later long-time owners, Burwell Bassett, a nephew of Martha Washington. The Rockefellers acquired the home during the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg and moved into the house in 1936. It was mostly used a family retreat. Bassett Hall showcases “the significance of the 48

Rockefeller family to Colonial Williamsburg,” says Ginny Kauffman, Manager of Museum Site Interpretation for Colonial Williamsburg. “Without their generosity and support, Colonial Williamsburg would not be here today.” Today, visitors can tour the home, which has several rooms filled with the Rockefellers’ original furnishings, artwork, other home décor, and personal items. Downstairs, the morning room, where Abby Aldrich Rockefeller entertained neighbors and friends, and the parlor room, where John D. Rockefeller Jr. met with colleagues during the revitalization of Colonial Williamsburg, blend the personal tastes of the famous husband and wife. Also downstairs, you’ll find the grand dining room, where the Rockefellers hosted community members for dinner on Saturday nights as well as Fort Eustis soldiers for Thanksgiving on one occasion. Off the dining room is the pantry with its collection of Abby Aldrich’s prized china. There is also a kitchen as well as the caretakers’ quarters. Meanwhile, upstairs, there are two bedrooms, one
for houseguests and the Rockefellers’ main bedroom. Bassett Hall is adorned with family heirlooms and treasures--- dishes, porcelain, silver, clothing, furniture, paintings---several of which were purchased by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller’s sister, Lucy Aldrich. There is also a blanket chest from Abby Aldrich Rockefeller’s brother with the original blankets still inside. But visitors will most admire Abby Aldrich Rockefeller’s own collection of folk art. More than 125 pieces are located throughout the house and include portraits, theorems, needlework, chalkware, and other whimsical works. The Bassett Hall grounds also include smaller buildings that used to serve as a smokehouse, kitchen, and dairy as well as a teahouse and garden. For years, there was also the famous Great Oak tree, where Rockefeller first launched his plans for the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg. That tree was destroyed in an ice storm in 1998, but another tree grown from one of its germinated acorns stands near where it once stood. It is said that Bassett Hall was one of the favorite homes of the Rockefellers, who enjoyed coming to the area when the gardens were in full bloom in autumn and spring for a respite and to check on the progress of the restoration, in which they were deeply involved.
