There’s something magic about ice cream. It feeds our souls as well as our bodies. It evokes memories and experiences. It is the perfect antidote for a sultry summer day. In this edition, tuck in and read about what some local ice cream purveyors have to say about this most delightful of delights. When you’ve scraped the bowl clean, head over to Joan’s Antiques at Old Towne Square for some antique shopping. Kimberly Karafa is running the shop for her mother in law Joan Karafa, and it is a delightful, gracious spot, filled with lovely, useful pieces. If you’re in the market for something more whimsical, Art-cade Gallery of Art is hosting its 17th annual summer art show this month. Disney Fine Art is again the star of the show. If leaving town and crowds behind sounds like a cool thing to do, head over to Jamestown Settlement starting later in July to check out what is shaping up to be a most intriguing exhibit on Pocahontas. “Pocahontas Imagined” features portraits, sculptures, memorabilia – even a postage stamp -- images of her over the years. There is a separate component for children, as well. Finally, it wouldn’t be summer and July without our national Fourth of July birthday party. As is the custom, there are music and activities culminating with fantastic fireworks shows at Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown and Busch Gardens. See if you can make your ice cream last through the finale.

Fright for a cause By Troy Jefferson Scares that Care brings people together for frights and a good cause. “We have celebrity guests, we do a kids trick or treat, we have volunteers dress up as zombies,” said Joe Ripple, founder of Scares that Care. Scares that Care is a nonprofit that supports families in need. “We are our own 501(c)(3) charity,” said Ripple, a retired police detective. Some of the celebrity guests expected at this year’s convention include Tracie Thoms from Looper and Kerry Remsen who was in a Nightmare on Elm Street 2. Ripple said he started the event in honor of the daughter of his police detective partner, who contracted an inoperable brain tu-
mor and passed away at four years old. Ripple was a pallbearer in her funeral and also helped work at a horror convention at the time. “I put the experiences I had with my partner and his loss and the generosity of the horror community and thus Scares that Care was born,” Ripple said. Ripple said he’s expecting
anywhere from 3,500-4,000 people to attend this year. This is the fourth year of the event. Scares that Care will take place from July 21-July 23 at Doubletree by Hilton in Williamsburg. For more information and to buy tickets, visit http://scaresthatcareweekend.com/.

The Fourth of July’s big bang is revolutionary By Jimmy LaRoue The Big Bang Theory on the Fourth of July goes something like this – find your favorite place to go, stake out your spot early, sit back, relax and enjoy a majestic fireworks display with big bangs. These places in the Historic Triangle turn the theory into a revolutionary celebration.
Busch Gardens Spend the day wandering the villages, defying the laws of gravity on the park’s roller coasters - including its newest, InvadR - and checking out the new shows Britmania and OktoberZest, satisfying your hunger with some fresh cut fries at Les Frites and beer on tap before the skies darken and provide the canvas for a spectacular fireworks show with soundscapes. You get two chances to catch the fireworks at the park – July 3 and 4 at 9:30 p.m. each evening. The park is open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day. Colonial Williamsburg Get a sense of how our independence came to be by spending the fourth of July at Colonial Williamsburg, which offers a mix of free public events and ones that require special tickets or admission, leading into the evening’s The Lights of Freedom fireworks show on the Palace Green. Public events include readings of the Declaration of Independence (at 9:30 a.m. and noon), a Salute to the States at 10 a.m. at Market Square North behind the courthouse. A special militia muster will salute the 13 original states, with the Fife and Drums playing and the flags of each state displayed. Throughout the day, there will be summer games at the Market House. There are also paying options for those who want a more inclusive experience to include breakfast, or VIP options for dinner and fireworks. Various events are also taking place at Colonial Williamsburg with paid admission, and the Art Museums will also have special programs.

The day culminates at 9 p.m. on the Palace Green with The Lights of Freedom, a fireworks show including a patriotic procession, a reading of the Declaration by Thomas Jefferson and a musical program. Yorktown Another patriotic take on the fourth begins early
with the running of the Yorktown Independence Day 8K run and 5K walk through the Yorktown Battlefield beginning at 8 a.m. at York High School. Both events begin and end near Surrender Field. At 9 a.m., watch a parade on Water and Main streets, with music provided by the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Ceremonial Band Yorktown. For the evening events, parking opens at 4 p.m. on the corner of Cook Road and Ballard Street, and at 7 p.m., the Sounds of Liberty Bell Ringing Ceremony takes place on the Riverwalk Landing Stage. An hour later, the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band will lead into the fireworks; they will perform on the Riverwalk Landing Stage. At 9:15 p.m., the fireworks will display over the York River. The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown will hold a Liberty Celebration on July 4. Visitors can observe tactical drills and take part in military exercises while learning of the challenges that faced the founders of the United States, including those who signed the Declaration of Independence. The museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Yorktown Trolley will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit yorkcounty.gov or call 757-890-3500.

Adventure awaits on the water By Amanda Williams The heat of a Virginia summer beckons opportunities to explore of the area’s waterways.
Williamsburg’s closest state park on the banks of the York River has an abundance of water activities — self-guided or with a ranger leading the way.

Visitors can rent canoes and kayaks at York River State Park, which are ideal for navigating Taskinas Creek, a tributary of the park’s namesake. Paddlers can spot catfish and white perch underwater in the creek, and keeping an eye on the trees could reveal an Osprey or Bald Eagle. With a Virginia fishing license, anglers can catch fish in the creek and in the York River, where they’ll also find spot, croaker, striper and crabs. Rental costs vary by boat type. Canoes are $8 each hour or $15 for four hours. Solo kayaks are also $8 per hour or $20 for four hours and tandem kayaks are $10 per hour and $25 for four.
Those interested in a history or ecology lesson can tag along to one of many ranger-led tours up the creek. The park hosts sunset paddles starting at 5:30 p.m. each Sunday in July. The two-hour excursion fees are $9 per person in a canoe, $16 for a solo kayak and $11 per person in a tandem kayak. If sunset is too early for you — or you want to track down some werewolves — the park offers a nighttime canoe outing during the full moon and another stargazing adventure later in the month. A ranger will lead the group of canoes up the Taskinas Creek slowly, identifying the sights and sounds from the park’s nocturnal inhabitants not usually seen by daytime visitors in addition to the constellations and planets far above. The full moon paddle is scheduled July 8 and the stargazing is on July 21. Both three-hour excursions start at 7:30 p.m. and each canoe must have an experienced paddler. A story unfolds through Disney works at Art-cade summer art show By Jimmy LaRoue Disney and storytelling go hand-in-hand, and when you walk into Williamsburg’s Art-cade Gallery of Art, vivid and memorable images come to life.
Through July 22, Art-cade Gallery of Art is hosting its 17th annual summer art show, with its Disney Fine Art collection of prints at the forefront. The Disney images go handin-hand with th the gallery’s overall ove Storybook theme, with a wide
array of Disney-based images displayed. The art is not just copies of movie cells, but rather is created by Disney-approved artists painting their interpretations of animated files as limited edition, signed and numbered fine art prints. New this year is conceptual artwork from the Beauty and the Beast remake, and the show includes “Hello Young Prince” from Bambi, “The Colors of Life” from Fantasia 2000, “Ice Queen” from Frozen and “Serenade for a Lady” from Lady and the Tramp. The Art-cade Gallery is the only authorized Disney Fine Art gallery in the Peninsula area, according to gallery owners Arlene and Mickey Sego.

Swoon to the tunes at Busch Gardens By Troy Jefferson Summertime means good music and good food at Busch Gardens. Starting in July and running through August, Busch Gardens will host a Summer Nights Concert Series, featuring popular rock, pop, country and contemporary Christian performers in the Royal Palace Theatre. The July lineup includes 20

Chase Bryant, Cassadee Pope, Josh Turner, Jeremy Camp, Rend Collective and MercyMe. “We have a variety of genres that are fun for everyone,” Ron Vample, senior communications manager at Busch Gardens, said. “Summer is a core season for the park and every season we’re trying to think of ways to make it more exciting,” said Vample. “We want to be that spot if you’re looking for a thrill ride we got it
or if you want to cool off we have that too.” Summer Nights Concerts are free with park admission. Perfor-
mances and concerts are subject to change and cancellation without notice. Limited seating is available, not guaranteed. Busch Gardens is also debuting a new live performance this summer called “Britmania” which premieres June 30. Britmania is a musical featuring British hits from the 1960s to today. The park opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A beautiful, challenging pedal through nature By Wesley Wright The middle of July brings some of the most beautiful weather Virginia has to offer and the annual Park to Park Bicycle Tour is a great way to get out and into it. Tours, which can be anywhere from 15 to 50 miles, touch several parks in James City County, and the fee you pay to participate includes a lunch you’ll need after all that bike riding. There are 15-mile, 30-mile, and 50-mile options for the bike rides, and there will be support vehicles available along the route. The Chickahominy Riverfront Pool will also be available for those who feel like cooling off after their rides.

Old favorites to the rescue on long summer days By Amanda Williams With a more than 14 hours of daylight, July is not the month to spend indoors. Instead, get to know the Historic Triangle through one of its many summer traditions from concerts to farmer’s markets to a combination of both. 2nd Sundays — July’s is on the 9th — is Williamsburg’s own arts festival. For ice cream lovers, it’s about more than taste and texture; it’s an experience By Brandy Centolanza There is nothing like indulging in a cone or a cup of ice cream on a hot summer afternoon. Whether you prefer hard or soft, chocolate or vanilla, the ice cream choices in Williamsburg are seemingly endless. “When it comes to ice cream, it is about the experience,” said 26

I like being a part of that.” Bruster’s offers a variety of ice cream flavors made on site for everyone in the family, include your dog. The doggie sundaes come
with a scoop of ice cream with a dog biscuit for your pooch. “The dogs love it, most definitely,” said Samson. Bruster’s is one of Sarah Malec’s favorite places to take her family for ice cream. “I think a good ice cream is homemade, creamy with big chunks of fruit or chocolate,” she said. “My favorite ice cream
at Bruster’s is Cherry Chocolate Chip. It has huge chunks of real cherries in it and huge pieces of chocolate in it. The texture and taste is to die for.” Stefan Pappas, a manager at Kilwin’s on Prince George Street, agreed. “Texture is super important, but it is also about the environment in which you enjoy the ice cream. We like it when people come in and have fun trying all the flavors. We always try to give people what makes them happy. We make our ice cream with a lot of care. We also have a variety of flavors to keep everyone happy.” Busch Gardens serves up the sweet treat in a replica French café at Josephine’s Creamery de Chocolat. “At Josephine’s, it is about our guests being able to customize their sundae to what they want,” said Executive Chef Justin Watson. “They can choose from a variety of toppings, including many Ghirardelli products. They can get a waffle bowl and watch them being made through the window.” Shorty’s Diner on Merrimac Trail operates an ice cream window for soft-serve ice cream on weekends, though you can also order ice cream delights -- banana splits, sundaes, milkshakes, malts, and floats -- inside the restaurant any day of the week. “Our popular items are our sundaes, and our old-fashioned milkshakes,” said Tony Short, coowner. “The milkshakes are very thick. To go along with our dinertheme, we also have root beer floats and floats made with orange Crush. We like to give people a blast from the past.” Ice cream aficionado Jerri Simmons from Nashville, Tennessee, who recently enjoyed a cone from Baskin Robbins in downtown Williamsburg, prefers ice cream with nuts, caramel, and chocolate, but “I’ll take ice cream any way I can get it,” she said. “It’s just so

ryman. “My favorite thing about ice cream is the fact that it brings smiles to the faces of so many people.” For those who want something cold, there are options to change things up a bit. Ben & Jerry’s at the Williamsburg Premium Outlets is an internationally known favorite that locals enjoy.
You can get your frozen yogurt fix at Sweet Frog in New Town or Menchie’s in Settlers Market or enjoy ice cream and Italian ice combos at Sno-to-Go on Richmond Road or Rita’s Italian Ice on Monticello Avenue. For those seeking an alternative that is healthy and satisfying, Eric Christenson, owner of Lokal on Prince George Street, makes homemade, low-sugar gelatos and sorbets using fresh, local, organic ingredients. Lokal’s melon sorbet features melon from Kelrae Farm in Toano that is “so sweet you don’t even have to add sugar,” Christenson said. Christenson, who learned to make gelato while training in Italy, also periodically offers classes on how to make your own gelato and sorbet at home. “You can do quite a bit on your own,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun.” No matter how you take your ice cream, how you feel when you are gobbling it up is what makes it so special. “For me, ice cream equates to happiness,” said Watson. “It brings back childhood memories of birthday parties with friends and the ice cream truck on a hot summer day. The nostalgia is certainly a factor in why I love ice cream so much.”

James City County will host Karaoke in the Park July 1 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The county hosted one in May and will host another in September. “Any age can participate. It’s a family friendly event, it’s designed for families and visitors in the area and tourists,” said Arlana Fauntleroy, county recreation administrator. The county began the event in 2011 and usually around 60

people attend. Participants can pick their own song to sing along to. Fauntleroy said the county will contract a private karaoke company for the event. Exhibit brings Pocahontas to life By Amanda Williams In the Historic Triangle, Pocahontas will be celebrated with more fervor than usual this year. Four-hundred years ago, the peace-seeking Native American — daughter of Chief Powhatan who later married English colonist John Rolfe — died in England. The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, which runs Jamestown Settlement, will commemorate the anniversary with a special exhibition “Pocahontas Imagined.” 30

Using images of Pocahontas over the years, visitors will get a look into the living American Indian, growing up and forming her relationships with English Colonists, as well as the popularity she gained after her death. She’s been the basis for cartoon movies and biopics and used as a marketing tool; her face has been plastered on ads for oranges, tobacco and coal. The exhibit will be on display from July 15 to Jan. 28. The museum compiled portraits, sculptures, memorabilia and advertisements. Visitors can also pose in a life-sized cutout of the 1907 postage stamp
featuring Pocahontas. A children’s section focuses on Pocahontas’ life as a child, and activities include weaving and painting clay pots. There is a threepart lecture series accompanying the exhibition. Each is free but reservations are recommended. On Sept. 5, art historian Karen Sherry will talk about myths that have sprouted around Pocahontas and Sept. 13 will feature a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts manager Jeffery Allison examining how Native Americans are played in films. The last lecture is Oct. 3, hosted by Virginia Museum of Fine Arts adjunct curator of Native American Art Johanna Minich. She’ll discuss women photographers and the myth that American Indians are a “vanishing race.” Make lecture reservations by calling (757) 2534572 or emailing rsvp@jyf.virginia.gov. At Tuscany Ristorante, ‘Everyone loves Italian food’

By Seth Birkenmeyer Tuscany Ristorante Williamsburg is hoping to draw people in from the summer heat for a respite of Italian cuisine. The restaurant 42

opened last September to complement the Tuscany Ristorante location in Newport News. Tuscany Ristorante is the product of a business partnership between owner Kate Huff and
New York restaurateur Aldo Bertuglia, with whom she’s worked for more than 20 years. “He’s the mastermind,” Huff said. “He’s the chef. He’s the cook. He’s the creator.” Seeing him move from New York to Virginia, operating restaurants in Richmond, Newport News and the like, sparked a fire within Huff. “Watching him do that inspired me to do that,” she said. Huff credits her 2013 visit to Italy as the inspiration behind taking the reins the new restaurant. “That was it,” she said, and it doesn’t hurt that “everyone loves Italian food.” The restaurant opened in September 2016 and Huff said she has been pleased with the results thus far. “The response from the community is great,” Huff said, adding that tourists visiting the area have responded positively as well. She said their location is less central than, for example, Richmond Road. So the restaurant relies heavily on word of mouth to drum up business. “The community has been following my partner for years,” Huff said, and that’s helped garner attention. Bertuglia’s Italian heritage also lends the establishment an air of authenticity. Bertuglia’s wife and daughter work at the restaurant, and Huff considers herself a part of their family as well. That’s a feeling they want to extend to customers. “We are a family-owned restaurant,” Huff said. Tuscany Ristorante also prides itself on its fresh ingredients.
“Everything is prepared to your order,” Huff said. For example, if a guest orders something with alfredo sauce, the sauce is made on the spot in the kitchen. The menu also changes regularly, with daily and nightly specials. Huff said the restaurant’s best dishes are anything with a vodka-based sauce. The farfalle toscana is a big hit; it features a pink cream sauce, bow tie pasta and shrimp. Their lemon butter francese sauce is also popular among customers. At the end of the day, it’s about giving guests a venue for great Italian food and great conversation. “You listen to the people,” she said. “That’s what it comes down to.”

Memory Café offers time to talk with others By Seth Birkenmeyer Dementia is one of the great terrors in life that can befall a human being. It’s something that many of Williamsburg’s aging population must face. But the Peninsula Agency on Aging and Riverside’s Center for Excellence in Aging and Lifelong Health are trying to make doing just that a little easier. In 2016, they teamed up to launch a program called the Memory Café. It usually brings people together on the third Wednesday of every month to provide individuals further along in the effects of
dementia, as well as their caretakers, a chance to socialize. “It gives them an opportunity to talk to folks in the same situation,” Peninsula Agency on Aging Director Diane Hartley said. Their clients “really need and want to socialize.” The program is free of charge and open to people at any stage of memory loss. A trained facilitator is onsite to help if needed. The Williamsburg Community Foundation funds the project. Hartley said the program has been a hit in the year since its inception. “It’s been very well-received
in the community,” she said. “We continue to have new people coming out and participating. It has essentially held true to the purpose of the meetings.” She emphasized the impact the program has on the area’s older population. Even a simple conversation can brighten one’s day. “It’s a little bit different and certainly something that’s needed in our community,” Hartley said. The Memory Cafés complement the Peers and Partners program, hosted by the southeastern Virginia chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. That program is

Do your homework before buying a diamond By Brandy Centolanza Wedding season is in full swing and with it comes shopping for diamond rings. So, what are the latest trends in engagement rings? Halo rings are popular, in part because of the recent engagement and wedding of Pippa Middleton. A halo ring features a center gemstone, usually a diamond, surrounded by smaller stones that draw attention to the center jewel. “Halo rings are still popular, but making a comeback are simple solitaires and three stone rings,” shared Tony Goodman, Director of Operations for Goodman & Sons Jewelers in Monticello Marketplace. “Halos give a bigger overall appearance to the center diamond by surrounding it with other smaller diamonds. However, since that has gained popularity, people are starting to pivot and showcase the center diamond more without the Halo. Hence, the solitaire and three stone classics.” Diamonds in varying shapes are also big right now. “Another new trend that has just popped up in the last six months is an increased interest in fancy-shape diamonds,” noted Goodman. “Forevermark just launched their Black Label Collection. This collection of fancy shapes -- ovals, cushions, squares, and hearts -- and rounds are the first diamonds to ever be perfectly symmetrical when cutting the diamond in half. This is really something, and a must-see.” Historically, diamonds have 48

been the choice for engagement rings, although other gems are used as well. The tradition of diamond engagement rings dates back to 1477, when the Archduke Maximilian of Austria personally
gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy. “Diamonds are the universal symbol of love,” said Christine Evans with Boyer’s Diamonds & Fine Jewelry in Lightfoot. “When we sell a diamond, we are selling feelings and emotions. No two diamonds are alike. That’s what makes them the perfect choice for an engagement ring.” “People choose diamonds because it is tradition,” added Douglas McLean, a certified gemologist appraiser with Laney’s Diamonds
& Jewelry on Center Street. “Sapphires and rubies are also excellent choices. They are both strong, sturdy stones, and sapphires come in a rainbow of colors, so you are not limited on the color.” Diamonds also have durability going for them. “Diamonds are the hardest of all gemstones,” explained Goodman. “That means they can be worn every day and take a lot of abuse. We still recommend caring for them as they are still not invincible to damage but, compared to any other gemstone, they make the best choice for everyday wear.” So, what else should you keep in mind when purchasing an engagement ring? “A couple should discuss budget and style before shopping, and find a reputable jeweler who will maintain the ring moving into the future,” said Rachel Eden McQuade, whose family owns and operates Kingsmill Jewelers. McLean agreed. “It’s a question of style and taste, and what you prefer,” he said. “I would say the best thing is to try a ring on and see how it looks on your hand. You want to have a ring that is the right fit for you.” Goodman suggested researching engagement rings roughly two months before proposing. “This isn’t a hard and fast rule, but many diamond rings are now made to the specifications of the consumers and can take as much as four weeks to be made,” he said. “Often you can still find a ring and walk out of the store that same day, but it is better to plan
ahead to make sure you get exactly what you want, how you want it. This is a big purchase, and we recommend taking your time and getting it just right.” Use the Internet as a guide, but consider purchasing your ring from a store. Find a jeweler you can trust. “Look for those both online
or instore who are truly passionate about helping you find the right diamond,” Goodman said. “And, remember the word value. Price does not equal value. Find a quality diamond engagement ring at the right price for you, and you will get the best value for you and your future bride. You both deserve it.”

Joan’s Antiques offers unique items in a cozy atmosphere By Victoria Terrinoni If you had asked Kimberly Karafa two years ago if she would be running an antique shop, her answer would have been “no.” She was a successful real estate agent for the past 25 years and had no thought of changing. Then her mother-in-law, Joan Karafa, fell and broke her leg in 2013 and Kimberly found herself running Joan’s Antiques to help out. The store was originally in Gloucester. But Kimberly remembers sitting in the shop one cold, dreary winter day, looking at all the beautiful items and thought the store needed to move to a better location in Olde Towne Square in Williamsburg. Kimberly now runs the business full time. Joan still comes in on weekends to chat up the customers and regale them with stories of her life in the Bronx, New York, before moving to Virginia. “She’s a big part of this. Not only is it her name on the door, but I hope to keep her legacy going,” Kimberly said. The shop is beautiful. It is not cluttered like some others. Everything is staged to make it look cozy and useful. And everything has a place, thanks to Kimberly’s friend, Kathleen Worman. “She’s very crafty and there is nothing she cannot do,” Kimberly said. Joan’s expertise comes when it comes to buying new pieces. She has an eye for what will sell. Kimberly said a piece has to be unique for the store to buy it
outright for resale. Most items are placed on consignment. She personally goes to a home to look at items for consignment or asks customers to take pictures to show her at the store. Customers earn 60 percent of an item’s sale price and the store keeps 40 percent. After 90 days, if an item hasn’t sold the customer can pick it up, donate it or extend their contract. Through the store, Kimberly also offers estate liquidations. “It is an invaluable service to people who are not only elderly, but have family out of state,” she said. It is a primary service of the shop, which also offers pick up and/or delivery of larger items. “We have a lot of tourists who find a big piece they love, but have no way of getting it home,” she said. The cost of shipping is added to the price of the piece. Kimberly said Joan’s Antiques is different because they take the time to get to know the customers. “We are establishing relationships that will be ongoing for years to come,” she said. “We take time to give more personal service

Colonial Williamsburg will host a series of Sunset Serenade summer concerts in the garden at Chownings Tavern, which was originally constructed in 1766. Each Friday, local acts playing a range of music from blues to bluegrass, folk, and more.
