The holiday season officially begins in November. And during this season, more than usual, Williamsburg merges past and present. Whether you choose to enjoy old traditions or create new ones, revisit longstanding ventures or explore inaugural ones, you’ll find something to make you feel at home for the holidays. This year marks the 60th anniversary of a Williamsburg staple: The Old Chickahominy House. Customers return year after year because it feels like a trip to grandmother’s house, complete with authentic Southern cooking, an antique gift shop and a resident cat. Colonial Williamsburg now has a resident dog — it’s a friendly Briard puppy, Liberty. Liberty will roam the historic area with her handler, interacting with visitors and shedding light on Colonial Williamsburg’s pet-friendly hotels. Nearby, Colonial Williamsburg’s historic windmill has found a new home. A replica of an early 18th-century windmill built in 1956, the windmill closed in 2003. Reconstruction began in September in a spot near CW’s visitor center where the windmill will stand as an icon once again. Over at Historic Berkeley Plantation, the 54th annual Virginia Thanksgiving Festival will celebrate the first English-speaking Thanksgiving in the New World. A new tradition begins this month at the first annual Harvest Celebration. The City of Williamsburg, James City County and York County collaborated to produce this five-day extravaganza with over 30 culinary-inspired events. Something else new to Greater Williamsburg is Studio M Hair Design, opened by Mindy Taylor in May. From the moment she picked up a pair of scissors, Taylor hasn’t slowed down, and customers love the results of her work at Studio M. The results of hard work are seen weekly at Williamsburg United Methodist Church’s group piano lessons for adults. Here, adults of all ages can refresh or develop their piano skills, learning alongside new friends. Old friends compose the family of artists at Prince George Art and Frame. Owner Fred Miller has long been a part of Williamsburg’s art community, and he highlights local talent at this fine art gallery and custom framer. A family of performing artists exists within the Williamsburg Choral Guild, a volunteer community chorus. The group celebrates the opening of its 40th season this month. Nov. 11 is Veterans Day, honoring those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Serving the local military community is the goal of Chapter 1754 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a group composed of purple heart veterans. Later in the month, take a trip to Busch Gardens’ magical Christmas Town. With holiday shows, dining, light shows, and Santa himself, Christmas Town is one-stop shop for everything Christmas. Lastly, be sure to check out the Holiday event guide, which details harvest and holiday events around Greater Williamsburg. Mark your calendars for good food, holiday shopping, visits with Santa and much more.

A joyful noise: Williamsburg Choral Guild begins 40th season By Heather Bridges

Much can change in 40 years. But in the 40 years since the Williamsburg Choral Guild first formed, one aspect of the group has remained constant: an immense love of singing. “It’s very much a community within the Williamsburg community, this group of people that love to sing,” conductor Jay BeVille said. It’s a love that has drawn, and still draws, audiences to performances. And this season, the guild celebrates 40 years by singing audience favorites from throughout the years. The season opens with Mendelssohn’s “Elijah” on Nov. 15. In 2014, the guild asked members and audiences to vote on their favorites from a list of songs performed in recent years. After hundreds submitted votes, the programming for the season was decided.

“Elijah” received the highest number of votes. Through dramatic elements and stirring choruses, the oratorio tells the compelling story of Biblical prophet Elijah. Soloists include baritone Christopher Mooney, soprano Anna Feucht, mezzo soprano Abigail Stinnett and tenor Garry Sloan. “There’s a slight element of theatrical presentation,” BeVille said. The soloists will take the stage in costume as if they are characters. A 31-piece chamber orchestra and nearly 100 voices round out this powerful season-opener. BeVille, a longtime music educator based in Richmond, begins his 14th season as conductor and artistic director. Under BeVille’s direction, the guild has broadened in both membership and repertoire. “I think we have something for everybody,” BeVille said. The choral guild is Williamsburg’s sole all-volunteer mixed community chorus, with nearly 100 members from high school students to senior citizens. Since 1975, it has perfected the balance between challenge and enjoyment, members and audiences. “We’re doing more difficult works, and things that are a challenge to us as singers,” Warren Spence said. “But people discover something in those concerts that they really like.” At 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Dec. 13, the guild will present a free Christmas concert at King of

Glory Lutheran Church. The chorus will perform holiday selections, and audiences can participate in a community carol sing. Audience members are invited to bring nonperishable food items for donation to FISH and Grove Christian Outreach. Remaining season performances include Brahms’ “Ein

Warm the spirit as temperatures drop

with a visit to Christmas Town By Heather Bridges

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2015

Take a trip to the North Pole without having to leave Williamsburg—Busch Gardens’ Christmas Town opens Nov. 27. It’s a town like no other. With shows, dining, shopping, lights and Santa himself, guests can experience all aspects of the Christmas season in one location. Start out with a visit to the Highland Stables, set in the Scottish countryside. Interact with Clydesdales, Scottish blackface sheep and Border Collies under the winter sky in this hands-on holiday experience. This season, more than eight million lights illuminate Christmas Town. Once the sun sets, enter Polar Pathway, where Italy’s Escape from Pompeii transforms into an unforgettable light display. Another highlight is the “O Tannenbaum” light show, with a 50-foot Christmas tree and holiday musical score. New this year, an ice show will take to the Royal Palace Theatre stage for the first time in 13 years. Based on the poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas,” “‘Twas That Night” captivates with visuals, original and traditional Christmas tunes and the talents of world-champion figure skater Elvis Stojko. Other theatrical offerings range from festive to touching. Consider “Deck the Halls,” celebrating Christmas traditions in a musical tribute, or “Gloria” which re-tells the first Christmas story. If you get hungry, travel to Germany, Italy, Ireland, England or France for a holiday dining experience special to each country, from Dasher’s Diner in Festa Italia to “Das Festhaus” in Germany’s Oktoberfest. In Ireland’s Castle O’Sullivan’s dining room, dine with the Claus couple at Santa’s Fireside Feast. Santa will read a classic Christmas story as Mrs. Claus hosts a buffet dinner. Though some of Busch Garden’s rides close for the season, 20 remain open. And many are decked out for the holidays, such as the

A family of artists at

Prince George Art & Frame By Heather Bridges

Last Memorial Day weekend, Prince George Art and Frame held an open house event. Nine local artists gathered at the gallery, demonstrating their skills. They worked in paint, pottery, woodblock printing and paper mache. For owner Fred Miller, that event was a family gathering. “We are a family of sorts. We all know each other,” owner Fred Miller said. “It’s a very close bond with the artists.” You can find this family’s art within Prince George Art and Frame, a fine art gallery and custom framer with strong local ties. Miller grew up in Williamsburg. He has always 26

loved and studied art, and he spent 25 years as a professional photographer. In 1981, the shop first opened as a print gallery in a small space on Prince George Street. Miller saw a move to the current 1300-square-foot location in Colony Square Shopping Center as an opportunity to expand to an original art gallery. “I’ve been involved in the art community here for years and years,” Miller said, including as Vice President of This Century Art Gallery and a board member for An Occasion for the Arts. “It just makes sense to feature what I know best,” Miller said. “The local artists.” “There are a lot of artists in Williamsburg for its size,” he continued. Around the time it expanded, Miller said the gallery

found its niche in featuring local, original art. Now, local artists have more venues, and Prince George carries other art as well—but the talents of local artists remain the focus. “They’re my friends,” he said. “I admire their art.” In his goal of providing a venue for artists to display and sell their works, Miller also organizes two to three feature exhibits each year. Most recently, Prince George showcased paintings by local artist Jan Ledbetter inspired by her travels to Guatemala. The mostly two-dimensional art dotting the gallery ranges in medium and style, from traditional watercolors to abstract oils. The shop carries a selection of hand crafts, too, including stoneware and pottery. Not only does Prince George house art, but it helps disperse art throughout the community. With a selection of over 3,000 frame samples, the shop’s custom framing department continues to augment art and keepsakes displayed within homes, offices, museums and other local facilities. Miller also dabbles in fine art printing, specifically Giclée printing, another offering at the shop. For the future, Miller has a few concepts and services in mind. Whatever is next, Prince George Art and Frame will continue connecting with local artists and art-lovers, as it has for over 30 years. Rescuing Williamsburg’s windmill, a Historic Area icon By Mark St. John Erickson

Soon after Colonial Williamsburg craftsmen began erecting a replica of an early 18th-century windmill in 1956, visitors and residents alike embraced it as a Historic Area landmark. Countless postcards, charms, books, Christmas ornaments and other souvenirs bearing its likeness sold in Williamsburg shops over the following years. In 1980, the Post Office issued a 15-cent stamp endorsing its iconic status. Despite that long record of public prominence, the structure built for the 350th anniversary of the English landing at Jamestown fell on hard times in the mid1990s, when milling stopped due to chronic mechanical problems. It closed to visitors in 2003 and — in 2010 — was taken down and moved to an empty lot near CW's Great Hopes Plantation.

The windmill in 1996 28

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2015

Out of sight for five years, the famous windmill rose again on Sept. 8, when the newly reinforced and restored millhouse was hoisted into place atop its rebuilt base. That reunion has been nearly a year in the making, said Matt Webster, the foundation's director of architectural preservation, and it marks a milestone in an effort to not only resurrect the lost landmark but also make it capable of milling for the first time in two decades. "This is an icon of Colonial Williamsburg. It's an important piece of our history that is very important to our visitors," he adds. "When we're finished, it will function more like a period mill than it ever did." Based on an English mill built in 1636, the CW replica was intended to reflect an important and often forgotten part of colonial life, Webster says, describing the structure's unique interpretive role as a giant, windpowered machine.

And when it ran as expected, it provided visitors with a rare and instructive look at the pre-Industrial Revolution-era's mechanical ingenuity and resourcefulness by grinding out as much as 200 pounds of cornmeal an hour. But over time, the huge, clocklike apparatus not only suffered from continual wear and tear but also underlying design and construction aws that dogged the foundation's efforts to ďŹ x and maintain it. More issues developed as the trees surrounding the Peyton Randolph House site grew and choked off the wind, making it increasingly difďŹ cult to achieve the 100plus revolutions per minute needed to drive the running grindstone. All those problems came to a head in the 1990s, when the foundation not only introduced a newer, more accurate and more focused interpretation of the Randolph House site but also failed to ďŹ nd evidence that the 1720s mill had survived into the Revolutionary era. "Windmills are very complicated pieces of machinery," former Vice President of Research and Interpretation James Horn said in 2010, describing some of the many reasons behind the decision to disassemble the windmill and move it. "It's almost like a huge wooden clock with cogs and wheel — and it's a complex job to maintain it." Still, even before longtime CW supporter David McShane of Bucks County, Pa., stepped forward in 2014 to fund the windmill's restoration, Webster and Historic Trades carpenter Steven Chabra had identiďŹ ed a previously unrecognized source of its problems. Working with millwright Ben Hassett of Kentucky as well as retired English millwright Derek Ogden, who now lives in SmithďŹ eld, they discovered that the mill's original prototype was missing two of its most important structural timbers since they were removed in the early 1900s. What resulted when these massive side girts were omitted from the replica was an unbalanced millhouse that not only leaned and exed excessively in the wind — becoming "headsick" or "tailsick" depending on the direction — but also made it tough to keep the millstones level. "The side girts take the entire weight of the building and transfer it to all four corners instead of the middle," said Chabra, who reviewed the mill's operating records in order to help diagnose and correct its ills. "Mills are all about balance — and when you put these side girts in where they're supposed to be, it solves a lot of problems." Equally critical was a second change introduced when Chabra replaced the rotted cross trees supporting the mill's king post. Instead of making the open mortise joints ush, he left a space that had been omitted by past restorations — yet which only added to the mill's woes once they went missing. "This is actually supposed to move — and it didn't," Chabra says, describing how the massive base

The crane slowly lifts the windmil house WR ÀW RQWR WKH EDVH RQ 6HSWHPEHU 3KRWR E\ -RH )XGJH 'DLO\ 3UHVV

needed room to accommodate the forces driving the sails and windshaft. "That really beat up the building because it couldn't accommodate the shock." Combined with replacing more than a half-dozen major rotted-out components, including the giant windshaft and the robust sheers that support the millhouse on its base, these improvements have driven the project far beyond its initial goal of restoring the mill as a static exhibit. The work is scheduled to be ďŹ nished in October, and then, the old icon will not only be capable of milling grain again but also of doing the job better than at any time since it was dedicated in 1957. The hilltop structure will regain its landmark status, too, once the trees that screen it from CW's Visitor Center, the Colonial Parkway and the footpath to the Historic Area have been trimmed to provide a vista. "We could have faked it — but we wanted it to function again. That was one of the most important goals of this project," Webster says. "But seeing it now, I never thought we'd get to this point. It's been an amazing challenge." WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2015

Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 1754:

United in brotherhood and service By Heather Bridges T.C. Smith vividly remembers visiting veterans at Eastern State Hospital last Christmas. Smith, and other members of Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 1754, presented the hospital with a check for use in making Christmas a little nicer for the its veterans. “To see the look in their eyes that said, you know what, it’s nice to have someone recognize that we’re veterans, and that we’re here,” Smith said—it’s a moment he won’t forget. Serving the veteran community is the goal of Williamsburg’s Chapter 1754, just as it’s the goal of the national organization. Chartered by Congress in 1958, the Military Order of the Purple Heart is a veteran service organization composed of military men and women who received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in combat. As commander of Chapter 1754, Smith is a veteran of the Vietnam War, who was wounded while on an aerial scout mission at age 23. He served in the Army for 26 years. Most of the chatper’s 40 members served in Vietnam. A handful of members served in Korea and Afghanistan, and two members are World War II veterans. No matter the war, the rank or the military branch, the chapter’s members share a special bond. It’s similar to the bond developed in a combat zone: “I will do anything to make sure you get home safely, and you will do anything to make sure I get home safely,” Smith said. “It’s nothing that’s ever said; it’s just kind of understood.” 30

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2015

The camaraderie and fellowship shared by the members is another aspect of Chapter 1754. “We’re kind of ... brothers in a way,” member Lowell Long said. Also a Vietnam veteran, Long was recruited to the chapter by a member who noticed Long’s Purple Heart license plate. That brotherhood is strengthened by each member’s passion for serving veterans, active military and their families. “If you can make this world a little better place at the end of the day because you helped somebody, then that’s why I do it,” Smith said. Some members of the chapter serve as mentors for the Wounded Warrior program. The chapter also plans to visit veterans at Eastern State Hospital again this Christmas. As a nonprofit organization, “All the money our chapter makes goes back to the community,” Smith said. One example is the emergency food voucher program for families at Fort Eustis. Chapter 1754 donates to this program, which helps provide food to families experiencing financial difficulty. Smith said a future initiative of the chapter is to contribute to resolving the plight of homeless veterans around the Peninsula. “It may be too big a problem to solve, but we’re going to try,” Smith said. To learn more about the Military Order of the Purple Heart, visit purpleheart.org. The Williamsburg chapter meets at 6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at Center Street Grill. Smith can be reached at tcsmith3@aol.com or 703-677-2792. Photo courtesy of T.C. Smith

Berkeley Plantation hosts 54th “Virginia Thanksgiving Festival” By Austin Bogues

Historic Berkeley Plantation will host the 54th annual Virginia Thanksgiving Festival this month. This year the event will feature a few new events, including a re-enactment of the arrival of Capt. Woodlief and his crew. There will also be a parade, tours of the 1726 manor house, choral music, colonial period games, a silent auction, a corn maze, tribal dancing and arts and crafts on display. It is billed as the “First English Speaking Thanksgiving Celebration in the New World.” “It’s a time to celebrate Thanksgiving,” said Tammy Radcliff, an event organizer. Radcliff said 2,500 people attended the event last year, and 1,500 attended the year before. She said while the Thanksgiving feast celebrated by the Pilgrims and Native Americans in Plymouth, Mass.,

receives the bulk of the attention for America’s history with the holiday, Jamestown also had a historic part. According to the Library of Congress, in 1610 when supply ships arrived to the settlement colonists had been stricken with famine. “This was a religious ceremony; this was not a feast with Indians and Pilgrims. By the orders of the King of England when they arrived safely they were supposed to give thanks,” Radcliff said. “That’s what they did.” The event this year will take place on Nov 1. with house tours beginning at 9 a.m. and the festival beginning at noon. While the festival is free, there is a $10 donation for parking. Berkeley Plantation is located at 12602 Harrison Landing Road, Charles City. Mindy Taylor of Studio M: From salon apprentice to salon owner

By Heather Bridges Mindy Taylor admits she doesn’t like to settle. She’s a learner, a doer. That’s why she started Studio M Hair Design. “It was something I’ve always wanted to do,” Taylor, 38, said. “I’d never expected to be able to do this this time in my life—I figured I’d be older. But I’m glad I did.” Customers are glad, too. Since opening in May, Studio M has created buzz with its welcoming atmosphere and quality service. Taylor began styling hair in 2003, starting as an apprentice before receiving her cosmetology license. “From the first time I picked up a pair of scissors, I’ve been going.” Taylor said. Always learning, Taylor attended several courses and academies. From California to New York, she trained in coloring, texturizing and cutting techniques. Last year, while renting booth space at a small salon, Taylor felt a tug. “I just felt like there was more out there for me,” she said. She decided the time was right to start her own salon. Soon after, everything fell into place, from finding a location to recruiting other stylists. Taylor is still amazed at how smoothly everything came together, with the help of family and friends. For her, it was confirmation that opening the salon was meant to be. With wood flooring and elegant decorations, Studio M is modern, yet inviting. “Warm and welcoming and boutique-y”—that was Taylor’s goal. The salon offers haircuts for men, women, teens and

children, as well as coloring, texturizing, styling and facial waxing. Taylor works with four other stylists: Erin Covington, Charlyn Wapner, Karmen Showalter and Ashley Middleton. All have extensive educations in hair styling, but each has her own specialty, whether texturizing, adding highlights or some other technique. “We all have a passion for one or the other,” Taylor said. “It’s kind of neat how it all works together really well.” The stylists, along with Studio M’s manager Samantha Altizer, work to create a certain feeling within the salon. “We listen to our clients,” Taylor said. “And we take care of them the best that we are able to take care of them, in an atmosphere that is fun and warm and welcoming.” At Studio M, the experience is just as important as the product. That’s what keeps customers returning. It’s about “making your client feel like they are—because they are—one of a kind,” Taylor said. “They’re the most important person while they’re sitting in your chair.” For more information, visit studiomwilliamsburg.com. Williamsburg Harvest Celebration: From Virginia farms to Williamsburg tables By Heather Bridges

The first annual Williamsburg Harvest Celebration hopes to showcase a different side of the region. “We have a lot of great chefs, great restaurants … great food,” Karen Riordan, CEO of the Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance, said. “It’s not a story that’s been told,” Riordan continued. “Our designation as America’s Historic Triangle is a dominant identifier for our region.” But with over 30 culinaryinspired events from Nov. 11-15, Riordan hopes the Harvest Celebration will establish Williamsburg’s culinary identity. The City of Williamsburg, James City County, York County and the Williamsburg Winery, overseen by the Chamber, collaborated to produce the five-day event. To have three municipalities work together on an event, “You just don’t see that happening very often,” Cindy McGann, executive director of the Harvest Celebration, said. McGann said the collaboration speaks to the strength of community in the Historic Triangle area. Combining social, educational and always appetizing elements, the events occur throughout Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. They feature the talents and passions of chefs, farmers, artisans, foragers, authors, brewers, winemakers and culinary historians. It’s a “farm-to-table” celebration 42

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2015

with Virginia at the focus. “We’re not bringing in chefs from Food Network or New York,” McGann said. The guests are “born, bred or currently cooking in Virginia.” Chefs like Nelson Miller of Silt or David Everett of Blue Talon Bistro, The Trellis and DoG Street Pub. Even more, the festival highlights the region’s culinary richness— from the chefs and restaurants to two thriving farmer’s markets to the Colonial Virginia Wine Trail. “What we have for the size of the region is really quite remarkable,” Riordan said. It’s a culinary heritage that traces back to 1607, when “farmto-table” was a way of life, not just a fine-dining option. “Farm-to-table is such a popular concept right now,” Riordan said. “But it really began in the Jamestown-Yorktown area … we defined farm-to-table.” With 3,500 tickets available, the Harvest Celebration’s inaugural goal is to establish a reputation. Riordan hopes the celebration grows into a must-do event. “We’re really scratching the surface of the kinds of things we can do,” Riordan said. Proceeds from the event benefit Meals on Wheels, Southern Foodways Alliance, FISH and the Virginia Fresh Food Fund. For more information or to buy tickets, visit williamsburgharvestcelebration.com. Piano lessons for young-at-heart adults

By Heather Bridges

Nancy Ward remembers taking piano lessons as a child. “We’d pay 10 cents a lesson,” she said. Ward, now 80, was first to arrive to a morning group piano class for adults, taking a seat at one of seven electric keyboards It’s her fourth year of piano lessons at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, after a years-long hiatus from lessons. “I always wanted to play,” Ward said. Stories similar to Ward’s inspired Cindy Freeman, director of the church’s Early Childhood Music School, to begin offering adult piano classes about six years ago. Freeman was struck by how many adults took lessons as children, eventually quitting or forced to drop out. “They come back at a certain age, and they seem to want to resurrect that from their childhood,” Freeman said. Now, the Early Childhood Music School offers group piano classes to approximately 30 adults. Classes are open to adults of all ages, with levels for complete beginners to early advanced, and they occur during the day. Beverly Peterson joined the class three years ago. She had no experience with piano, or any musical instrument. 44

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2015

Following Peterson’s move to Williamsburg, after a career teaching at Penn State, “I wanted something to do that was just for me,” she said. During the morning class, Peterson played scales and songs with both hands. With hard work, she has come a long way. “I find it very challenging and very rewarding,” Peterson said. It’s fun, too, she added. “It has been shown that music is one of the only disciplines that uses the entire brain,” Freeman said. She stressed the importance of exercising the brain as much as the body. “Your brain also atrophies, when it’s not challenged,” she said. “And this is a tremendous challenge.” For student Laura Lawrence, learning to play the piano was on her bucket list. “I have found it hard to do,” she said. “But I persevere.” Much of the reason Lawrence perseveres is the other women in the class. They’re encouraging and accepting, she said. Lawrence, Peterson, Ward, and four other women have taken keyboard lessons from Freeman for the past three years. They call themselves the “piano chicks.” “They have stuck with it, even when it was frustrating,” Freeman said. “They’ve come out on the other side, and they’re starting to really see their own progress.” The classes build community. And that’s just as important as the music. “They’re finding new friends,” Freeman said. “People that they care about and that care about them.” In the group classes, some taught by Freeman

and some by Paulette Amory, students learn theory and technique. They learn duets and songs, always playing in unison. Freeman chose a curriculum designed specifically for adults. No one has to perform or play alone. Together, the students learn, laugh and create music. “Once they surmount those difficult obstacles, and they can hear that they’re making music, then it’s very satisfying,” Freeman said. “That’s my goal.” Ward’s goal was to learn how to play notes in the bass clef. Now, she can, but she’s not satisfied. “I don’t feel like I have accomplished what I set out to do yet,” Ward said. Until then, she’ll keep learning. For more information, contact Freeman at 2291771, ext. 108, or cfreeman@williamsburgumc.org. Students must pay for materials and tuition, and a senior discount is available. Freeman said the school will recruit more adult students for next fall. All photos by Heather Bridges

Colonial Williamsburg introduces a furry friend By Heather Bridges

Colonial Williamsburg has brought to life a new facet of history with the help of a furry friend. Liberty, a friendly Briard puppy, is Colonial Williamsburg’s first-ever mascot. Liberty made her first public appearance on Sept. 17. She arrived to the historic Williamsburg Inn aboard a horse-drawn carriage along with her master, Gen. George Washington, portrayed by Ron Carnegie. “Amid so much rich historic content, Liberty offers an opportunity to engage guests and to make the 18th century come alive in new and unexpected

ways,” “Washington” wrote in a prepared release. Thomas Jefferson once wrote of a plan to present President Washington with a pair of French “Shepherd’s dog” puppies, which many believe to have been Briards. Though historical records don’t reveal whether this plan came to fruition, Colonial Williamsburg chose to honor Jefferson’s wish in selecting a Briard as Washington’s companion. Born in April, Liberty arrived at the colonial capital in July. Once she completes training to become a therapy dog, Liberty will traverse the Historic Area streets with her costumed handler, interacting with WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2015

passersby and visiting with guests in area hotels. Generally, Briards can reach up to 100 pounds in size. Liberty’s size and shaggy fur will make her easy to spot as she roams Duke of Gloucester Street and beyond. “Liberty will inspire a new generation of guests to visit the Revolutionary City and to bring their pets, who are welcome at Colonial Williamsburg’ worldclass hotels,” Washington said. Colonial Williamsburg’s petfriendly hotels are the Williams-

burg Inn, Williamsburg Lodge, Woodlands Hotel and Suites, Governor’s Inn and Providence Hall Guest Houses. More information on petfriendly hotels can be found at colonialwilliamsburg.com/stay. For more information on Liberty, visit makinghistorynow.com.

Old Chickahominy House celebrates 60 years By Heather Bridges

Customers may visit the Old Chickahominy House for a variety of reasons: The authentic Southern food or the antique gift selection. The resident cat, perhaps. Those reasons, however varied, stem from the same feeling. “It’s like coming back to your grandmother’s house,” owner Maxine Williams said. That feeling has kept customers returning for 60 years, an anniversary the restaurant celebrated in September. In 1955, Melinda Henderson Barbour opened the Old Chickahominy House in a one-story building on Route 5 near the Chickahominy River. She served 62

ham biscuits and homemade pie. The shop sold antiques, gas, cigarettes. After a series of break-ins, Barbour moved the restaurant closer to town in 1962. “In those days, this was country,” Williams said, referring to the restaurant’s now-surrounded location on Jamestown Road near Route 199. Barbour pieced the house together with parts salvaged from Tidewater plantation homes. Over 200 years old, the paneling on the back wall came from Carter’s Grove Plantation. Williams took over from Barbour, her motherin-law at the time, in 1969. Now 74, Williams has managed the restaurant for 46 years. For 20 of those years, she lived on the second floor. Williams estimated there were no more than 20

restaurants in the area, outside of Colonial Williamsburg, in the house’s early years. Now, hundreds exist. Even as Williamsburg changed all around her, the old house remained unchanged. The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch, and the 18th-century dining room seats 55. Williams described the menu as very Southern, and specifically Virginian. Popular items include “Miss Melinda’s Pancakes,” Brunswick Stew and the ham biscuits. “It’s a small menu, but everything is homemade,” head cook Torri Bishop said. The biscuits, the pies, the pancakes — everything. Even the locally sourced ham is cooked in-house. Bishop is a nine-year employee, and many of the staff members are long-serving. “People come back because they know … the employees,” Williams said. “They know we know ‘em by name.” People even get to know the gift shop cat, a tradition of the Old Chickahominy House. Melinda, who was adopted from the Heritage Humane Society, has roamed the shop for eight years. Before her, Mr. Biscuit was resident for 16 years. The gift shop contains an eclectic collection of hand-selected antiques and estate items, with some new items in the mix -- everything from furniture to handbags to the popular $6 jewelry table. Upstairs, the “Christmas Shop” features holiday items. A holiday open house will occur in the shop on the first weekend of November, and Williams said to expect a singing Santa. Williams has seen generations of families come through the restaurant. After 60 years, customers are still drawn to the “grandmother’s house” feeling of familiarity, comfort, and family. The Old Chickahominy House whisks visitors away from a fast-paced world. Even as Williamsburg continues to change, the old house’s relevance remains. “It’s going strong right now—stronger than it’s ever been,” Williams said. “I look forward to go on as long as we can.” For more information, call 2294689 or visit oldchickahominy.com.
