Can you believe it is already November? It seems like summer was just here, and now we find ourselves in the midst of a new holiday season. Thanksgiving falls late this year, Nov. 27. It is the official beginning of the holidays—and Black Friday—the official beginning of the shopping season is Nov. 28. This month, holiday shopping gets in full swing. Don’t forget to Shop Local and support small business owners throughout greater Williamsburg. The fall initiative will be held Nov. 8 and will incorporate dozens of businesses. It is a great opportunity to find a unique piece while supporting the local economy. Also this month is the return of the annual Holiday Antiques Show at the DoubleTree Hotel, opening Black Friday and running through that Sunday. The show features 30 dealers from throughout the region and the United Kingdom. It is a great way to get a hop on the holiday season. Our Local Spin features the Yorktown Bookshop, recently opened on the Riverwalk. The store is truly distinctive, a mustsee for those who visit the York River area. Also featured is Bodacious Lady Boutique on Route Five. The store offers full-figured ladies with fashionable, fun clothing that is meant to enhance beauty. Our Head of the Class feature showcases Diane Cavazos, of the newly opened Veritas Preparatory School. Get to know her and the school better in the short, but informative interview with her. What’s Cooking in the local restaurant kitchens this month highlights executive chef Ken Brown of Fat Tuna Oyster House on Richmond Road. The restaurant, which opened about six months ago, features fresh seafood that Brown enjoys preparing for the locals and visitors who frequent the restaurant. Take time this month to enjoy the final vestiges of our area’s foliage. Soon the trees will be bare, Christmas music will be playing and the weather will be decidedly colder. Don’t forget to take in the natural Christmas decorations adorning the buildings and offices of Colonial Williamsburg. Fat Tuna Grill & Oyster House By Ann M. EÀmetz Got oysters? The answer to that question is a resounding, “Yes” at Fat Tuna Grill & Oyster House on Richmond Road, one of Williamsburg’s newest restaurants, owned by Ken Brown, who is also the executive chef. Brown and his partner, Victor Minichiello, thought our area could use a “good, different seafood place with an action station out front opening oysters in front of you.” The Fat Tuna is what the duo decided upon and since, has been serving up the shellfish along with other fresh sea delicacies. “We try to do the freshest seafood possible here,” Brown said in a recent interview. ‘We have the ocean right here in our backyard.” Brown strives to provide people with top-notch food, coupled with great customer service. “Not only do you have to have good food, you have to have a good team that provides great service to our guests, “Brown said emphatically. Brown said preparing seafood has been a passion for years, having its genesis in childhood, growing up in Delaware. “I started fishing at a very young age and I learned about the cleaning and preparation of fish,” Brown said. “We had a big family. When we went fishing we would bring it home and ate what we caught. It was nothing for my family to go to the beach and go clamming or crabbing.” Brown said he developed an early taste for seafood, which he continued developing throughout the years. His first job was at a restaurant in Upstate New York that specialized in seafood. He has continued that affinity, and brings his flair to the kitchen at Fat Tuna. “When you have the freshest piece of fish, it will be a hit,” he said simply. “People know the difference between fresh and frozen fish. You add a little olive oil and lemon juice and you just can’t beat it.” Brown decided on the name ‘Fat Tuna’ for a couple of reasons. “I look at the name as reflecting a fish that I have cooked for a long time,” he said. “And we are also fat

with knowledge.” Tuna is a ﬁsh plentiful off the coast of Virginia, and one that is among Brown’s favorite to prepare and to eat. “I like it on the grill, I like it blackened and I like it sesame –seared,” he said. “And I like to eat it rare. It has a great ﬂavor to it. People need to try it.” Brown said he plans to expand the menu to introduce new items. That’s in addition to daily “fresh boards,” at the restaurant that give him a lot of room to utilize the freshest seafood and seasonal products available. He hopes people will continue coming to the restaurant and trying some of the delicacies he enjoys creating. “This is a dream I had and Victor and I put it together,” Brown said. “Hopefully it will be special for us, and special for Williamsburg.”

Time to shop local Initiative seeks to grow our local economy

By Ann M. EÀmetz It is the ﬁfth installment of the Shop Local campaign sponsored by Chesapeake Bank . The initiative has become popular among local businesses, residents and area visitors who capitalize on special promotions given by some merchants. This fall’s event is scheduled for Nov. 8. More than 350 merchants participated in the spring campaign. Some businesses offer extended discounts and promotions to help make shopping easier. Businesses can sign up through Nov. 5. The initiative started in fall of 2012 as a way to help businesses who had experienced challenges during the downturn in the economy. The program is meant to entice shoppers to buy local and support local businesses during this special time of year. “We wanted to do a grass roots campaign to help with the local economy,” said Meredith Fernandez, marketing manager for Chesapeake Bank. “We also wanted to educate the public how important it is to support local businesses and keep dollars recirculating in our communities. It is fun to support the local businesses who may be your neighbors, and to meet other people in our community.” Participation has been brisk. “It has been great,” Fernandez said. ‘We enjoy this campaign. It is all about community.”

The date is chosen to fall early enough in the month to give people a jump on Black Friday and other promotions. Fernandez noted that buying local comes with a certain peace of mind. “We want people to consider spending the dollars here and putting them to work here before going online and spending them. You have to be careful with online shopping.” The program is designed to be a throwback to when people shopped at local stores and businesses. “You got to know your neighbors,” she said. “The business owners were your neighbors and it felt good to support them and keep a pulse on what is going on in the community.” Even visitors take advantage of the shopping opportunities. “Increasingly visitors are searching out different places to eat and shop,” Fernandez said. “Places are looking the same, same restaurants and businesses. People want something different, something handmade. I think it is coming back around that bigger isn’t better. People miss the personal relationship and the customer service, more and more I think that we are moving back to the movement of supporting local.” More —Visit blog.chesbank.com

Booking it to a Great Find By Ann M. EÀmetz Mermaid Books owner Hatley Mason has amassed more than 20,000 titles in the small bookstore located beneath Prince George Street. The iconic bookstore features volumes of hard-to-ﬁnd books and antiques and gift items that are distinctive and often times, rare. One such treasure is a 1960 copy of “Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens” by J. M. Barrie and illustrated by Arthur Rackham. For the collector, the book is a coup. “It is very rare,” Mason said recently. “It is great for anyone who had a collection.” The price is available on request by calling Mason 229-3603. Historical Thanksgiving at Berkeley Plantation

The Virginia Thanksgiving Festival will be held noon- 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2 at Berkeley Plantation in Charles City. The free event recreates Thanksgiving at the plantation located on the James River. The event is dedicated to history, food and fun. Tours of the historic 1726 manor house are also available 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The festivities get under way at 11:45 a.m. with a parade leading to the Thanksgiving Shrine. It will be led by St. Andrews Pipes & Drums and will include horse and carriages. At 12:30 p.m., Tim Olbrych performs on lute and early guitar. That is followed by a performance by the Chickahominy Tribal Dancers with interpretation by ďŹ rst assistant chief Wayne Adkins. The events will also a feature a reenactment of

the landing of Capt. John Woodlief and his men. Woodlief and a group of 38 settlers arrived at Berkeley Plantation from Bristol, England on Dec. 4, 1619.

New Anglican church in Williamsburg By Ann M. EÀmetz The congregation of Incarnation Church, pastored by Rev. James Swynford, began public worship in September in the theater of the Williamsburg Regional Library. The Anglican congregation has grown over the past year to more than 50 people of all ages. The church meets at 10:15 a.m. each Sunday. Swynford said the church goal is simple. “At its core is a message of God’s love and to go out and share the message,” Swynford said. “We want to show the relevance of God’s love. We want to be a church that builds community in Williamsburg.” Swynford graduated from the College of William and Mary in 2002. He and his wife moved here about ﬁve years ago, and Swynford said it was around that time he said he began to sense a call to start the church. The name was chosen carefully to reﬂect the spirit of the church. “The word ‘incarnation’ means to come into existence,” Swynford explained. “It is what Christmas is all about, God became visible, became one of us. The reason my wife and I chose this name is to make God’s love visible in Williamsburg. We want them to know why God matters in everyday life.” Swynford said he hopes the church will provide a place for people to come to feel welcome and befriended. “Americans are increasingly lonely,” he said. “Every year there are less meaningful relationships, people connecting online without connection to each other. Yorktown Bookshop grand opening this month By Ann M. EÀmetz The Yorktown Bookshop, owned by David TorresLaboy will have its grand opening Saturday, Nov. 1 at the location on Water Street at Riverwalk Landing. Torres answered some questions about the new venture and the enthusiastic response the shop has received thus far. How many titles does the store feature? Right now we are in the throes of our build out and estimate our initial inventory of books to be at least 10,000 books, but that is just to start! Why did you decide to open the store in Yorktown? I have long had an interest in opening a small business here and saw the available space on Riverwalk Landing as a great location for a great used bookstore. My girlfriend York High School classmate, Kelsie Davis, owns the Book Exchange in Williamsburg. During our time together I have learned quite a bit about the used bookstore business. She agreed that a bookstore at Riverwalk Landing was a great idea and has offered to

lend her experience and expertise to my new endeavor. What would seem like competition is actually a mutually beneﬁcial business arrangement as part of the Yorktown Bookshop inventory will be purchased from The Book Exchange. The variety of titles, the welcoming layout, a knowledgeable staff to assist in ﬁnding that perfect book, and that it will be a warm and inviting atmosphere where they can browse or just relax. One day a customer came into Bodacious Lady Boutique located at Five Forks on Route 5 and asked Jennifer Mellis a simple question, “Where are your plus sizes?” “I said, ‘Everywhere,” Jennifer Mellis, said recently. “And the woman just welled up and cried.” Providing clothing for fullfigured women is one goal of the store, which recently celebrated its year anniversary, but there is so much more that the boutique offers those who shop there. “People can come in and look at clothing that is attractive and fits them, and that is important,” said Jerry Mellis, who with daughter, Jennifer, son Adam, and wife Donna, own and operate the business. “Rarely do you come to a place where you can get the customer service you get here and also have an emotional change.” “We are dealing with women who do not like to shop to begin with,” Donna Mellis said. “I feel this is a happy place. Ladies come in here and shop and have coffee or tea. They tell me that they hate shopping, but they don’t hate shopping here.” The idea for the boutique grew out of experiences Donna Mellis experienced firsthand when looking for a dress for her son’s wedding. After looking at several department and specialty stores, she was unsatisfied with the selection and the service she received. She ended up making her own dress for the event, and began researching a business that would provide larger women with quality clothing in an atmosphere designed to meet their needs. “There are people who walk in the door and they are crying,” Donna Mellis said, sharing a story about a young woman who came to the store the first weekend it

was open. “She was wearing jeans and a men’s T-shirt and her eyes were down. But she found several things in the store, and when she came up to the register she said, ‘I have to get my hair done.’ She was already feeling better about herself.” Stories like that abound, Donna Mellis said. There are people who have sought help at the store for wardrobe needs ranging from special occasions to loungewear appropriate for cruise vacations. Even those who wear smaller sizes express interest in the kinds of clothing offered. “I have had one lady who was shopping here for her mother who joked, ‘Maybe I should stop Weight Watchers so I could shop here,” Donna Mellis said. The store has a loyal clientele of locals and visitors who make it a point to stop in when visiting town. The success of the boutique has allowed for more offerings and styles. Currently the store caters to women who wear size large 12-14 through 3X. The future is bright for the business that Donna

Mellis said often prompts women to make comments including, “This place makes me feel like a princess.”

Colonial Williamsburg will hold events on Tuesday, Nov. 11 to honor those who serve our country in the military. An afternoon march at 4 p.m. highlights the day. The event features Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums, Military Programs Staff and members of the Williamsburg community veterans groups. All armed forces veterans are welcome and are encouraged to participate. A commemorative service behind the courthouse will be held following the march. York County will also hold a service at noon, Tuesday, Nov. 11. “Letters from War,” is the continuing theme of the annual event. Members of the York County Historical Committee will pay tribute to those who are serving, and have served our nation during times of war.

A new bocce court has been constructed at WindsorMeade, and has quickly become a popular activity among the residents. It provides a relaxing, fun way for seniors to fellowship, laugh and keep active.

“We have a lot of very active residents,” said Kate Leach, director of WindsorMeade marketing. “Their goal is to get outside and stay healthy.” The idea for the court was the brainchild of WindsorMeade resident Baxter Carr who approached the WindsorMeade social committee in 2009 about the idea of constructing a bocce court. “To me, this game at WindsorMeade would be like the Field of Dreams, if you build it they will come,” Carr recalled addressing the group prior to the ribbon-cutting. “Once the residents see the game played, I predict many will want to play. It will become very popular here.” Carr was a champion of the court, having played the game for years and enjoyed its noncompetitive but fun spirit. With his guidance, a team from James River Grounds Management donated their time to make the dream a reality. “We thought it was a great idea and we were on board,” said Dale O’Connell, branch manager

Let the holidays begin Holiday Antiques Show returns By Ann M. EÀmetz

For more than three decades, the Holiday Antiques Show has been among the traditions of the local gift-buying season. This year, 30 dealers representing 10 states and the United Kingdom will display antique furniture, accessories, oriental carpets and ﬁne artworks during the three-day show, Friday-Sunday, Nov. 28-30 at the Double Tree Hotel on Kingsmill Road. The hotel has undergone a couple name changes, but the show has remained constant, in the same space since its inception. Bettianne Sweeney, who organizes and manages the event each

year, said that those who attend this year will ﬁnd several new dealers interspersed with show favorites. John Dennison Fine Art is among the new dealers. He will bring American and European from the 18th and early 19th centuries. Other new dealers include Grifﬁth’s Antiques of New York, John and Robin Sittig of S.C. and Irongate Antiques from Pennsylvania. Favorite repeat dealers include Brill’s Antiques, Swan Tavern Antiques and Mad River Antiques. Sweeney said this year, the event will have an overall theme,

Title: President/Founder School location: 275 McLaws Circle How many children, and what grades are served at the school? We currently have twelve students enrolled in grades 6-10. Eventually we will serve grades 6-12. What was the genesis of founding Veritas? Many years ago when I was searching for a college preparatory school for my eldest child, I realized education had changed, and what I was looking for no longer existed. I discussed my thoughts with other parents who shared my concerns, and it was then that I seriously entertained the idea of founding a college preparatory high school that focused on the great works of Western Civilization with an emphasis on traditional Christian values. How is learning different for children enrolled at Veritas? Our curriculum is based on the Trivuum—grammar, logic, and rhetoric, the art of

memorizing words, numbers, symbols, the art of thinking; and the art of communicating. Latin is required in every grade. The intricacy and beauty of Latin serves students in learning English vocabulary, studying grammar and even speaking more articulately. How is the new school year progressing? Very well. Our mission is educating in the light of Truth. There is enjoyment in learning because we were created for Truth, and it is our responsibility to help the student access that desire for Truth. What do you feel is the best, most exciting part of your job? The best part of my job is watching the students come through the doors in the morning. I feel privileged and blessed knowing they are being educated properly. What education challenges face children/ parents today? I would say social media. It can be a huge distraction and I’m not sure school and computers mix. When I was a graduate student at William and Mary, I was working on a research paper and my desk was ﬁlled with books and periodicals. An undergraduate, whose desk was adjacent to mine, was curious as to what I was doing. I told her and she explained to me that she was working on a paper too, however, her desk was empty. All of her research was done online. She told me, “At least you know how to use a library. Because I don’t.” What are the future plans for Veritas? To be the best classical, college-prep school in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

of James River Grounds Management. “We wish many years of enjoyment out here on the court.” According to Bocce.org, the game is dated to as early as 5,000 B.C. when the ancient Egyptians played a form of the game using polished rocks. Simply, the game uses a small target ball, the pallino, which is tossed from one end of the court. Each player attends to aim their ball, which is heavier than the pallino, to get as close as possible to the target. The court was designed by Boccemon of Washington State and used tons of stone and crushed oyster shell to get just the right playing surface. The James River Grounds Management team constructed the court, using high-tech means including a laser level to make sure the court was perfect. A special draining system was constructed into the court to minimize puddling. “I have been out here after a huge downpour and there is not one puddle on the court,” Carr said. The residents have been enthusiastic. “Anyone can play the game,” said Joyce Darnton. “It is not strenuous, and it is fun.” “I’ve never played on an ofﬁcial court before,” said Shirley Leyland. ‘We used to go to upstate New York and they had dirt courts up there, the shells they have here. This is classic. This is great.” “This is a fun, fun game, especially for older adults,” Carr said. “It is fun. That is the thing about bocce. You just forget about the competition, and you just laugh.”

If ingested, your pet could become weak, ill and may even go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from respiratory failure. Retreat—during a party, give pets their own quiet space to retreat to—complete with fresh water and a place to snuggle e. snuggle.

Lights galore at Busch Gardens’ Christmas Town By Ann M. EÀmetz

On Nov. 21, Christmas Town, the hugely popular holiday spectacular at Busch Gardens opens for the season. It will run on selected days through the end of the year and offers locals and visitors with a singular experience. The park is transformed into a glittering wonderland with millions of twinkling lights and special attractions. Since Christmas Town debuted in 2009, it has become a tradition among those who live here and those who visit. Like the popular Halloween themed experience of Howl-O-Scream, the Christmas Town experience emerges against the back drop of the park. Countries become veritable celebrations of various aspects of the holiday experience. Some of the more visually spectacular attractions include the metamorphosis of Escape from Pompeii into a shimmering display of light. And don’t miss the bridge going from Germany to Italy.
