With a prevalence of scenic settings, it’s no wonder outdoor events pack the May calendar in Greater Williamsburg. Kingsmill will once again host the LPGA during the 2016 Kingsmill Championship, from May 16-22. And this year, readers get a glimpse behind the scenes of the tournament in an interview with Kingsmill’s head chef. You could say golf is a theme this month. In addition to a list of other golf courses in the area, we highlight some local places to find new and used golf equipment. On a lighter note, we also feature a few local mini-golf courses. For those who don’t golf, don’t worry – there’s a variety of outdoor events this month. Head to historic Yorktown on May 7 for Brews, Blues and BBQ, an event as delicious as the name suggests. On May 8, around 45 artists will display their work along the York River waterfront at Yorktown’s Art at the River, a juried art show. If these events pique your interest in Yorktown, then Patriot Tours & Provisions is the perfect way to learn more, offering guided Segway tours of the historic area. Pedal the Parkway on May 7 offers another unique outdoor option. Last year, it drew more than 1,000 people of all ages to cycle, run and walk a stretch of the Colonial Parkway closed to motor vehicles. Give Cancer the Boot at Williamsburg’s 16th annual Relay for Life By Heather Bridges Charlotte Pope relays for a reason. She relays for her mother, who Pope lost to leukemia. She relays for her uncle and for several friends who have battled cancer. She relays because cancer touched her life as early as age 12, when a classmate succumbed to the disease. “I’ve just always wanted to do something to help, because it’s out there,” Pope said. She has participated in Williamsburg’s Relay for Life since its start, in 2001. Just like Pope, every volunteer knows why they relay. “We all know people who have been touched by cancer,” said Kaye Vickerman, who has been involved seven years with Relay for Life. Vickerman is a six-year breast cancer survivor; one of her close friends is currently fighting cancer. Survivors, patients, caregivers, family, friends – anyone and everyone – are invited to “Give Cancer the Boot” at the 16th annual Relay for Life of Williamsburg, May 20-21 at Warhill High School. As the world’s largest fundraising event to end cancer, Relay for Life events take place in thousands of communities. Teams fundraise in the months leading up to the Relay. During the big event, individuals and teams walk the track. In 2015, 71 teams raised $225,128 at Williamsburg’s Relay for Life. This year, organizers are hoping for more. The 2016 goals include 23 new teams, 82 total teams, 740 participants, 200 survivors and $230,000 raised. “It’s fun. It’s exciting. But it’s emotional,” event chair Erin Kelly said of the 12-hour event. Survivors and caregivers start the night, with an inspirational first lap. Relay for Life also includes kids’ activities, live music, a luminaria lighting ceremony, a speaker, line dancing, zumba and an emotional dove-release ceremony in the morning. It’s a time of healing and hope. 10

Funds raised support the American Cancer Society. “We’re the largest nonprofit fundraiser for research in the world,” said Julia Bowditch, local ACS representative. Since 1946, American Cancer Society has invest-

ed more than $4 billion in research grants. Among other developments, this research has helped confirm the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, as well as develop drugs to treat leukemia and advanced breast cancer. In addition to research, American Cancer Society supports services, educational programs, transportation assistance and more.

the weather,” Carter said. “You can truly take your time.” May is National Bike Month, and the Williamsburg Area Bicyclists are celebrating with the 19th annual Pedal the Parkway – a free, 8-mile ride on the Colonial Parkway. The National Park Service will close the parkway to vehicle traffic between Williamsburg and Jamestown for the event from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. on May 7. Pedal the Parkway gives participants a chance to enjoy Virginia scenery and greenery without worrying about competition and traffic, Carter said. Not only is bicycling a fun, low-impact exercise, but it’s a great way for friends and families to travel together, Carter said. “Running is hard on your joints. With bicycling you can go so much farther and faster and see the world,” Carter said. “Your family has the experience of this outdoor athletic activity together, and you can communicate with each other while you’re out enjoying the scenery.”

Pedal the Parkway isn’t just for cyclists – runners, walkers and hikers are welcome to enjoy the event and free refreshments served by Sticks Kebob Shop and Rita’s Italian Ice. Participants can start their journey from either side of the parkway, but families with small children are advised to begin their trip in Jamestown because it’s less strenuous than the Williamsburg entrance. Biking isn’t mandatory, but helmets are. There will be about 100 free helmets available for children at the Jamestown entrance during registration.

Yorktown’s 3rd annual Art at the River By Heather Bridges Art at the River is one of the area’s newest juried art shows, just three years old, but event organizer Susan Powell said word about the show is spreading. This year, out of around 45 artists to exhibit their work, nearly 20 are new to Art at the River. The 3rd annual Art at the River returns to Yorktown’s Riverwalk Landing on Sunday, May 8. The all-day show is presented by the Art at the River Committee in partnership with York County and the Yorktown Foundation, with support from the York County and Williamsburg Area Arts Commission. “Yorktown is very much interested in the arts, and in supporting the arts,” said Powell, chair of the event’s committee. That’s how the idea for the show came about. During 225th anniversary celebrations for the Battle of Yorktown in 2006, Powell helped organize a small art show. She said that evolved into artists displaying their work at Market Days, Yorktown’s weekly farmers market, with the end goal of Yorktown having its own juried art show. This year’s artists come from around the region, but many are local York County artists. The mediums include photography, as well as two-dimensional and three-dimensional works, such as pen and ink, oils, acrylics, water colors, pottery, jewelry or glass. Not only does Art at the River provide another venue for artists to exhibit, Powell said, “It’s a fairly new venue for them.” Artists display along the picturesque York River waterfront, surrounded by the tidy shops, brick walkways and beaches of Riverwalk Landing. 16

“It’s a fun, exciting event for us in Yorktown,” Powell said. “We really enjoy welcoming the artists, and we look forward to it each year.” Each year, Art at the River features a special exhibit housed in the Freight Shed. Past exhibits include a collection of historic colonial beer drinking vessels in 2014 and The Crosses of Grace (Church) in 2015. This year’s exhibit will highlight York County’s young artists, featuring the artwork of high school students chosen by art teachers from York, Grafton, Tabb and Bruton High Schools.

By Ryan McKinnon Food, drink and music will be in abundance in historic Yorktown on May 7. For the second year, the York Foundation for Public Education is hosting “Brews, Blues and BBQ on the River.” Over 30 vendors and artisans will be selling food, drink and knick-knacks at the festival which runs from noon to 6 p.m. The event will feature beers from several local breweries including Smartmouth Brewing Company, O’Connor Brewing Company, Commonwealth Brewing Company and Alewerks Brewing Company. Those who want to sample an array of brews can purchase a tasting ticket, which provides unlim-

ited 2-ounce beer samplings and a souvenir beer glass. Tickets for beer sampling are $25 in advance or $30 on the day of the event. “Smokin” Joes BBQ, Jerry’s Backyard BBQ and Smoke BBQ will be among the many food vendors at the event. Planet Full of Blues, a Virginia-based trio that has played all over the world will be the opening act, takes the stage from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Blues Hall-of-Famer and York County resident Brian Carmone will perform as well, with the Brian C. Band from 2:00 to 3:45 p.m. Anthony and the Conqueroos will headline, performing from 4:00 to 5:45 p.m. The band, known for their combination of blues, funk and soul, was named the best blues band in 2014 and 2015 by Veer Magazine.

The event’s beneficiary, the York Foundation for Public Education, provides support and resources for York County Public Schools. Among many endeavors, the organization provides grants to teachers and schools, helps recruit new teachers to York County and helps fund continuing education for teachers and administrators.

Take mom outside on her special day By Ryan McKinnon The James City County Marina is offering a unique way to honor mom for this year’s Mother’s Day: Take her on a kayaking excursion. The Jamestown Paddle on Mother’s Day is geared towards moms who want to get out and see nature while having a bit of adventure. Chesapeake Experience, a nonprofit that runs summer camps, ecopaddles and field trips, will run the trip. The $50 excursion departs from the James City County Marina at 9 a.m. and will return by noon after a three-hour scenic guided tour on Powhatan Creek, near Jamestown. The state’s oldest tree can be found alongside Powhatan Creek, and Richardson said if paddlers make good time, they may be able to see the old bald cypress. The tour does not include lunch, but Richardson recommends bringing a water bottle. She said to anticipate getting wet feet and to bring a hat and sunglasses. She said one thing mothers did not need to worry about was taking an accidental dip in Powhatan Creek on their special day. “The kayaks are very easy to use. They are sit-on-top kayaks,” she said. “You would really have to try to flip one of those.”

Community and competition keep fans coming back to Kingsmill Championship By Kellen Holtzman In his third year with the Kingsmill Championship, tournament director Matthew Schulze has started noticing that people in the area often refer to the LPGA Tour event simply as “The Tournament.” Last year, it featured more than 1,400 volunteers, and many of them — Schulze pointed out — call Williamsburg home. “To me, that’s just kind of fascinating,” Schulze said. “We’re trying to find new ways to give back to 24

the community, because it is a community event ... People wait for it. They know it’s coming. They support it around the community of Williamsburg and Newport News.” The 12th edition of the Kingsmill Championship will commence May 16 on the River Course after drawing more than 60,000 patrons last year, one of its best attendance showings in recent years. Some of the ardor can be attributed to an appreciation for the LPGA Tour, which doesn’t bring the star power that the PGA brought to Kingsmill for

more than 20 years until 2002, but makes up for it by providing a fan-friendly atmosphere. Volunteers and player-hosts get up close and personal with the pro guests and in some cases, form long-lasting relationships. Cristie Kerr is Kingsmill’s shining example. The 38-year-old Miami native and three-time Kingsmill champion has said the Pete Dye course may be her favorite on tour and she has stayed with the same host family since the first tourney in 2003. Last year, then 18-year-old Aussie rookie Minjee Lee became the youngest Kingsmill Championship winner, shooting 5-under 269 to best So Yeon Ryu by two strokes. It’s the competition that keeps patrons coming back, too. “The level of golf is so crazy,” Schulze said, “and that’s what is fun here … The golf course has so much potential because of the par 5s and how the last couple of holes play.” Schulze said the course may be set up differently by the LPGA this year. The rest of the tourney features will look similar to the past, including the “Patriots’ Outpost” that was introduced on the 15th hole last year to honor female military members. The biggest change will be the addition of the Kingsmill Championship Junior Invitational, to precede the championship competition May 14-15 on the River Course. Expect James City County’s colorful signage to again be prominently displayed throughout the course. And look for a new quartet of 30-second county ads during the Golf Channel’s tournament coverage. “We’re looking at this not only as a partnership, but also to open up the lines of communication and the avenues for folks to come here and visit James City County,” county administrator Bryan Hill said. “There’s a lot more to do than playing golf. We’re going to try and publicize our county as much as possible.”

Addicted to Golf serves locals, visitors By Steve Vaughan Addicted to Golf is a business with more than 25 years of experience in the Historic Triangle, that serves both locals and visitors. The business began in 1989 in Yorktown as International Golf Discount, the brainchild of Richard Schiele. A Virginia Beach store was added in the early 2000s and a Williamsburg store, at 3032 Richmond Road, opened in November 2014. A point of pride for Addicted to Golf — which sells new and used golf clubs, equipment and clothing — is that it only sells top name brands. “That’s right, we don’t deal in composite clubs, which they sell you the pieces of and you put them together yourself,” said Ben Griebel, manager of the Williamsburg g store. “If yyou see something g on the PGA Tour, you can find it here. It’s top brands.”

Several quality golf courses – including the links at Colonial Williamsburg and at Kingsmill – around greater Williamsburg help attract golfers from near and far. Griebel says the store has a good relation with most of the local courses. “They have pro shops that sell some of Ben Griebel, manager the same equipment that we do, so some of them see us as competition,” he said. “But others p see us as another resource. For example Kiln Creek in Newport News, they offer a limited number of products, so if someone wants something they don’t have, they send them right to us. Because they know we’ll have it.” Griebel said he wants the Williamsburg Addicted to Golf to be the go-to store for visiting golfers.

“People who used to go to Myrtle Beach on golf trips, there was a huge store there called Martins, and everybody went there if they needed golf equipment because it was always there,” Griebel said. “That’s what I’d like to see for our Williamsburg store, that’s it’s the place to go for people who are in town on golf trips.” In addition to selling clubs and other equipment, Griebel and his staff help customers find the clubs that fit them best. At the back of the Williamsburg store is a golfing simulator that let’s customers take test swings to see if they like the results. On a recent afternoon, Griebel was discussing the virtues of variously angled irons with a customer at the simulator. “Every one in our store is friendly to folks when they come in and can help them find what they need,” he said.

Buggy Bathe’s services go beyond the obvious By Steve Vaughan Drivers can get more than a car wash at Buggy Bathe. In fact the full name of the business is Buggy Bathe Auto Wash, Lube & Detail Shoppe. And, according to owner Robb De La Graza, all three elements play into the success of the business he and his wife Jennifer started in 1999. They added a location in Virginia Beach in 2010. “The Quick Lube makes up about 25 percent of the

Williamsburg Store's total revenue,” De La Graza said. The Virginia Beach location doesn’t have a Quick Lube attached. The detailing business adds value to Buggy Bathe’s car wash operation. The shop offers four levels of car wash, according to its website; from the $7.95 basic exterior wash to the $25.95 “Governor’s Carriage” wash. But even that’s not enough for some vehicles. “The Detail Shoppes are an integral part of the car wash operation, as many vehicles are neglected and need more help than just a wash can provide,” De La Graza said. De La Garza said that between the Williamsburg location and the Virginia Beach location, Buggy Bathe averages 70 employees. He stressed the local nature of the business; it’s not part of a big national chain. “ Buggy Bathe is a family owned and operated business,” he said.

Ask these key questions as you investigate retirement living By Austin Bogues A senior-living community might seem like an ideal spot for retirees eager to escape after the kids have fled the house and the time for a big, roomy house has passed. Luckily Williamsburg provides some of those options, with communities like Colonial Heritage, Williamsburg Landing, Patriot’s Colony and others. But choosing to make that move comes with some thoughtful decision-making, as these are communities that typically come with rules. Some senior living communities limit access to guests on overnight visits, or have prohibitions or restrict children from staying on property or beyond a certain length of time. There are also considerations on amenities provided, access to assisted living care and use of private contractors. Diane Hartley, executive director of the Peninsula Agency on Aging Williamsburg Resource Center, said seniors should consider what type of costs or fees they may incur as a result of living in an exclusive 55 and up community.

“I would think about what are the extra costs going to be, what are the amenities that you’d like,” Hartley said. “Colonial Heritage has a golf course, a swimming pool, others have different features. But you see that cost in the homeowners’ fee.”

A recent housing study conducted by James City County along with researchers from Virginia Tech, showed that many households in the county were cost burdened, meaning that between 30 percent and 50 percent of income was being spent on housing. Seniors were especially susceptible to being cost burdened as they age. Hartley said most Williamsburg area Realtor offices now have an advisor on staff to work with seniors. “They have extra training about what things people should consider if you’re helping someone that’s older. Sometimes there are legal restrictions and other issues to consider.”

Things to consider when looking at a senior living community: • What are the fees and extra costs? How much am I willing and able to pay? • Can I afford this lifestyle for the rest of my life?

Colonial Cribbage Classic tests luck and skill By Adrienne Mayfield Winning a cribbage tournament requires a little skill and a lot of luck, said Bill Whiting of the American Cribbage Congress. “There’s always the chance a new player can beat an experienced player, so the thrill is always there,” Whiting said. Cribbage is a card game that involves grouping cards and counting the combinations they make to gain points. The competitive tournament pits cribbage players against each other with money on the line. See Yorktown on a Segway By Heather Bridges Taking a tour of historic Yorktown with Patriot Tours & Provisions will likely reveal a different side of the town. You’ll certainly see it from a different vantage point: atop a Segway scooter. “Such significant history in a beautiful, waterfront town,” said Jill Pryor, who owns the company with 40

On a Segway, “You get to see all of it.” In 2010, the Pryors took a Segway tour in Virginia Beach and enjoyed it so much that, a few months later, they opened Patriot Tours & Provisions. A one-hour “Breeze Tour” takes guests along the York River and through the historic village, covering ground from the Yorktown Victory Center to the National Park Service visitor center. A more extensive

two-hour “Historical Tour” illuminates Yorktown’s history during the Colonial, Revolutionary and Civil War periods. Both tours are guided. “We are able to cover more ground,” Jill said. Meanwhile, “We’re showing you places you might not know to visit.” Founded in 1691 as a seaport, Yorktown is significant as the location of Lord Cornwallis’ surrender to George Washington during the American Revolution, and it was also the site of major Civil War activity. Add in the waterfront view, shops and restaurants, and there’s something for everyone. As important as what you discover is how you discover it, though. A Segway tour, Jill said, is about the experience. “You’re learning something, but you’re enjoying something,” Jill said. “And you’re outside.” “It’s something different that is an adventure,” she said. Riding a Segway takes some getting used to. But, “We teach people how to do it, and we accompany them,” Jill said. “Once you get the hang of it – that’s the trick.”

The Pryors explained that riding a Segway is easier than riding a bicycle, because it self-balances. The key is to relax, Randy said. As you get used to the movement, riding a Segway becomes more intuitive, Jill said. Don’t worry, though. “We have a very good safety record, and that’s our goal,” Jill said. Patriot Tours also offers off-site tours at New Quarter Park and Kingsmill Resort. Participants ride Segways with larger wheels on these 90-minute tours, as guides take them on an off-road adventure. For Kingsmill chef Dallinger, bigger is better – and more fun By Brandy Centolanza Justin Dallinger, executive chef at Kingsmill Resort, grew up in the kitchen, and credits his parents and his Belgian grandmother with introducing him to a love of food, especially fresh food. “Both my parents grew up on farms, so we had a large garden when I was growing up,” Dallinger says. “I never really knew what frozen or canned foods tasted like.” Dallinger watched a lot of cooking shows as a child growing up in Lancaster, PA, and started food prepping and cooking in the kitchen around the age of seven. His grandmother taught him how to make French and Belgian desserts. “One of my earliest memories is of making mousse with her,” Dallinger recalls. “We would make chocolate mousse and galettes [French waffle cookies], and then dip the cookies in the mousse.” At 16, Dallinger took a job in a bake shop at Kitchen Kettle Village in Lancaster County, where he helped make shoo-fly pies, cookies, fruit pies, soft pretzels, and other sweet treats. He enjoyed it so much he decided to pursue a career in the culinary arts. Dallinger attended the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute in Pittsburgh and, in 2000, was accepted into the externship program at Kingsmill Resort, where he has been ever since. Through the externship program, Dallinger rotated between the resort’s four different restaurants, gaining experience in every area of the restaurant and catering business. He was promoted to Kingsmill’s banquet chef in 2009 and became executive chef in 2014. “I like my job because I am always doing something different every day at work,” he says. As a chef, Dallinger prefers working banquets and catering functions. He enjoys overseeing the meal planning for weddings, family reunions, business meetings, banquets and other events. “It’s my passion,” Dallinger says. “It’s fun working with clients as we plan their events. I like that I get to be a part of someone’s special day.”

Four times a year, Dallinger also works with local breweries and wineries to plan drink-themed dinner events. “It is always a great experience working with the breweries,” Dallinger states. “I like different styles of beer, and I also like to brew beer. I have a hops garden in my backyard.” Dallinger has helped prepare meals for as many as 500 guests during a single event, but perhaps the largest catering event Dallinger and the other Kingsmill chefs work is the LPGA Golf Championship, slated this year for May 16-22. The chefs there are on the go non-stop for seven straight days. “We start planning for the next LPGA event the day after the LPGA,” Dallinger says. His favorite part of the food prep for the LPGA is WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / MAY 2016

Last year, Dallinger came up with a James Bond theme for the party in which every food station was named after a James Bond movie. “It was very cool,” he says. “I am a huge James Bond fan, so it was a lot of fun to plan.” This year, the party’s theme is Riverboat, with food stations representing various “foodie” cities along the Mississippi River, including Memphis and St. Louis with a final destination of New Orleans. Dallinger and his chefs also cater meals continuously for those in the skyboxes and villas during the tournament, including breakfasts, lunches, receptions, and other smaller events held throughout the week. There is also a final dinner celebration when the winners are announced. “It is quite an amazing feat,” Dallinger says of pulling it all off. “The best part of my job is working with the team that I’ve assembled. I’m so lucky to be surrounded by so many talented chefs. It is amazing what we can do when we come together.” Dallinger met his wife, Ioana, at Kingsmill. She is working on a doctorate degree in hospitality and tourism management. The pair hope to one day open their own bed and breakfast. But for now, Dallinger loves being a part of Kingsmill. Once the LPGA is finished, he will focus on hiring additional chefs in preparation for the resort’s busy summer season. “I enjoyed my experience with the externship program,” he says. “It is a great program and I want to make sure that it continues.”

Seared Scallops with Red Sorrel and Charred Grapefruit Vinaigrette Red Sorrel’s fresh leaves are tender and have an intense lemony flavor. Charring the grapefruit produces magic; it caramelizes, balances the sourness and adds a savory note. Makes 4 Servings Ingredients 2 small ruby red grapefruits, halved 1 small leek, split lengthwise and rinsed 3 tablespoons high-quality extra-virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon organic honey 2 dashes grapefruit bitters Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1 pound 4 ounces sea scallops, muscle tabs removed 1 tsp canola oil 2 cup red sorrel 2 cup baby arugula 1/3 cup julienned carrot 1/3 cup julienned daikon radish Directions Preheat a grill to high heat. Lightly grease the cut sides of the grapefruits and leek with olive oil. Grill them both, cut-side down, until they are charred and the leeks are tender, about 2 minutes for the grapefruit and 3 minutes for the leeks. Let cool slightly. Juice the grapefruit into a large mixing bowl (you should have about 1/2 cup juice). Chop the leeks and add them to the bowl with the grapefruit juice. Add the olive oil, honey, bitters and some salt and pepper to the bowl and whisk to combine. Reserve. Dry the scallops with paper towels. Heat the canola oil in a skillet over medium high heat. Season scallops with salt and freshly ground pepper. Sear the scallops until browned on both sides and cooked through, about 2 minutes per side. Toss the greens, carrots, and daikon radish with some of the charred grapefruit vinaigrette. Arrange the scallops with the greens and vegetables and drizzle remaining vinaigrette around scallops.

Celebrate Mexico’s culture, food on Cinco de Mayo By Brandy Centolanza Cinco de Mayo is a great opportunity to share in some fun with family and friends while celebrating Mexican food, culture, and history. In Mexico, May 5 is a celebration of the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over the French during the Battle of Puebla. It is not to be confused with the Mexican Independence Day, which falls in September. Mexico often commemorates Cinco de May with parades. Meanwhile, to Americans, Cinco de Mayo has become a tradition of honoring Mexican culture, including food and drink, decor, clothing, dance and music, and more. Local Mexican restaurants offer specials on the holiday as they see a spike in customers turning out to commemorate Cinco de Mayo. Some restaurants hire mariachi bands to entertain patrons while they nosh on fajitas and margaritas. In the past, El Tapatio Mexican Grill & Bar in New Town has had shirts designed specifically for the event, and hired musical entertainment.

“We just want people to have fun,” says Antonio Ivarra, assistant manager. Javier Veliz, assistant manager for Taco Mexicali restaurant in Williamsburg Pavilion Shops Shopping Center, agrees. Taco Mexicali specializes in traditional Mexican food---tacos, fajitas, enchiladas, chalupas, burritos, and more---which guests can enjoy on

The restaurant also decorates for the holiday, and has a clown on hand to entertain families. “We’ll have specials, and offer more fun,” shares Veliz. “It’s a busy day for us, definitely.” You can honor the holiday with a fiesta at home by donning attire in the colors of green, white, and red, which represent the colors of the Mexican flag; listening to Latin music, or even playing music on a guitar or maracas; and serving up traditional Mexican fare. Try making appetizers such as sopes---small fried tortilla bowls topped with vegetables and meats---or salsa or guacamole with tortilla chips. For dessert, Mexican flan is popular. But if you prefer dining out and margaritas and guacamole are your thing, Plaza Azteca in High Street is famous for its fresh tableside guacamole. El Sabor Mexicano restaurant on Richmond Road will offer its usual food and happy hour specials with extra decorations and a more party-like atmosphere on Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo, like any holiday, is about “loving your friends and family and having a good time,” says Alberto Boites, an employee with El Sabor Mexicano.

A sneak peek at June By Heather Bridges Summer is the season of festivals and outdoor events, and June marks the start. Here are some events to look forward to in Williamsburg next month. festival serves up everything from Mushi-Gyoza to Guinness Mousse. Virginia Shakespeare Festival A summer favorite, the Virginia Shakespeare Festival returns for its 38th anniversary season. The festival opens June 29 with the Bard’s iconic love story, “Romeo & Juliet,” directed by festival director Christopher Owens and performed in Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall at The College of William & Mary. The festival continues through early August with performances of “Cymbeline” and “The Gravedigger’s Tale.” “Rent” From June 2-18, the Williamsburg Players will present “Rent,” one of Broadway’s longest-running shows and a pop culture phenomenon. A rock musical about young artists struggling with addiction, poverty and AIDS in New York City’s East Village, “Rent” won the Tony Award for Best Musical and Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Dana Margulies Cauthen will direct the Players’ production. Uncorked and Unplugged Presented by 94.9 The Point, Uncorked and Unplugged will once again bring live music to the Williamsburg Winery. As the name suggests, wine flows as national and up-and-coming musicians play acoustic sets in an outdoor setting. Past performers have included Grace Potter, Andrew McMahon, David Cook and A Great Big World. The event is scheduled for 1-5 p.m. on June 12. Father’s Day This year, Father’s Day falls on June 19. As you think of ways to celebrate dad, be sure to check local eateries for special meal deals. Think outside the box, too. For example, York River State Park will host “Father’s Day Surf & Turf,” an afternoon of kayaking/canoeing and fossil hunting, where dads paddle for free with a paid guest.
