This month’s magazine focuses on a variety of activities for residents and visitors of all ages. A highlight is the return of the LPGA Kingsmill Championship, which will be held May 11-17 at Kingsmill. It’s a great opportunity to spend time outside cheering on your favorite golfers. Each year, the Virginia Arts Festival presents “Festival Williamsburg.” Activities begin May 21, and continue through the Memorial Day weekend. Tickets are available at www.vafest.org, or conveniently during business hours at the Williamsburg Municipal Building on Lafayette Street. This month we celebrate Mother’s Day on May 10. That same day the monthly Second Sunday Art & Music Festival will be held on Prince George Street. Consider taking mom downtown for the family-friendly event that features dozens of artisans and live entertainment. There are many other opportunities for outdoor activities throughout May, beginning with the annual Pedal the Parkway on May 2. On that day, participants can ride their bicycles along a section of the Colonial Parkway that is closed to traffic. It’s another wonderful way for families to enjoy time together in the warm spring air. If you have never been to Jamestown Day, this is the year to do it. This year’s event takes place May 9 at Jamestown Settlement and Historic Jamestowne. Visit historyisfun.org for more details. And don’t forget Marine Science Day at VIMS in Gloucester May 30. Our Local Spins this month include a closer look at Wright Heating and Air Conditioning and New Town Art Gallery. The College of William and Mary will graduate its current senior class this month. Activities will be held May 15-17. There are a variety of smaller receptions, open houses and ceremonies. The main ceremony is Saturday in William and Mary Hall. Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be the speaker. Departmental events are Sunday. Congratulations to all the graduates and their families!

Remembering
those who served This year, Memorial Day falls on May 25. Services will be held at Colonial Williamsburg and at Williamsburg Memorial Park to commemorate the lives of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Colonial Williamsburg’s event is scheduled from 10 a.m.-noon, May 25, on Palace Green. It is open to the public and tickets aren’t required. The modern service honors military veterans who died while serving their country. A procession with Fife and Drum support will proceed from the Palace to Bruton Parish Church and the French gravesite. Wreaths will be laid, prayers given and volleys fired at each stop to honor soldiers of the American Revolution and Civil War interred nearby. For more information, visit www.history.org For more than 10 years, Williamsburg Memorial Park has sponsored the annual community Memorial Day service. Last year, approximately 600 attended to pay tribute to fallen heroes.

LPGA returns By Rusty Carter
The world’s best women golfers will descend on Kingsmill’s River Course this month as the Kingsmill Championship returns for its eleventh year. The event runs May 11-17 and is one the players’ favorite stops on the LPGA Tour. The distinction is that the River Course formerly hosted the PGA Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic, providing the women a rare opportunity to play on the same course where the world’s best male golfers also competed. At nearly 6,400 yards and playing to a par of 71, the River Course is one of the most challenging layouts on the LPGA Tour. Some of the tour’s legend-
ary players are among its champions: Annika Sorenstam, the fastest in LPGA history to reach $22 million, a feat she achieved in 2008 at Kingsmill during the Michelob Ultra Championship. Cristie Kerr, whose 16 career LPGA wins include three crystal vases from Kingsmill. Kerr is also a seven-time member of the U.S. team in the Solheim Cup and has more than $15 million in career winnings. Karrie Webb, who enters the 2015 season with 41 career victories. Suzanne Pettersen, who has 14 career wins as she enters her 13th season on the LPGA Tour. Pettersen also ďŹ nished second at Kingsmill, losing a two-hole playoff to Kerr.
Anticipated to return to Kingsmill for the 2015 tournament is Lizette Salas, who celebrated her ďŹ rst career win on the 18th hole of the River Course last year. This year’s event, like its predecessors, opens with a qualifying tournament on the River Course on Monday. Practice rounds are held Tuesday, followed by the Pro-Am on Wednesday. The 72-hole championship runs Thursday-Sunday, with the champion crowned on the 18th green.

New thrilling ride at Busch Gardens Busch Gardens recently opened its latest thrill ride, Tempesto, located in the Festa Italia section of the park near Apollo’s Chariot. The coaster races riders at speeds of nearly 65 miles per hour and features a 90-degree curve and an inversion twist 154 feet above the ground. Tempesto’s height requirement – 54 inches – is taller than most rides at Busch Gardens. The ride lasts 55 seconds, and the train holds 18 passengers. The

French ship Hermione to visit Yorktown June 5-7
The month of March marked the 235th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette’s departure from France to bring his nation’s support to George Washington and the Continental Army fighting for American independence. The ship that carried Lafayette was the 213-foot light frigate, Hermione. The crossing took 28 days, with the Marquis reaching Boston in April. France’s support turned the tide in the fight for American independence and led to the foundation of the United States of America. In 1997, a group of French individuals announced their plan to build an exact replica of the Hermione with the dream of sailing her to America. This month, the Hermione set sail for her voyage across the Atlantic. The ship will dock in Yorktown on June 5, and will be available for deck tours that weekend before departing early on the morning of June 8. For the ship’s first port of call, Yorktown is planning a three-day event that will include programs and activities for the public. The weekend will feature deck tours and ship events, a Heritage Village traveling exhibit, entertainment and educational programs. In preparation for the ship’s arrival, the York County Public Library has planned four programs that will be held in May. Information about all events associated with the Hermione’s visit will
be available on the county’s event website, Facebook (www.facebook.com/yorkcountyva) and Twitter (@ yorkcountyvagov). Social media posts associated with the Hermione visit will be tagged with #Hermione2015.

Marine Science Day afloat with activities The Virginia Institute of Marine Science will hold its annual Marine Science Day from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., May 30, at the Gloucester Point campus. When Bud Wright was in high school, he helped his father in the family plumbing and heating business. That experience taught him how to install and troubleshoot all types of plumbing and heating equipment. Wright eventually started his own business, Bud’s Heating and Air Conditioning, which he owned until 2000. It was after he retired and sold the business to his son-in-law that he reached another decision. “I decided that I didn’t like retirement,“ Wright said in a recent interview. “I missed my customers. I had a lot of customers who would still call and ask for me, and they started calling me at home. That’s when I decided that I would go back.” In 2001, Bud started Wright Heating and Air Conditioning with his son, Will. They have been working steadily ever since. “We are service-oriented,” he said. “People can call on us seven days a week and we go out and take care of them.” Wright has focused on keeping up with all the latest technology in heating and air-conditioning equipment. However, the changes in the equipment are secondary to what he said he does best. “I like being the one that people call if they have a problem,” he said. “And we are right there. We don’t make someone wait four or five days to come out.” The main office is located in Yorktown, but Wright said his customer base is throughout the Peninsula. “Half of our customers live in Williamsburg, and most of those customers are referrals,” he said. “I think 32

the biggest amount of our business comes by word of mouth. That is the best advertising you can get when someone else recommends you.” Summer is undoubtedly the busiest time of year. Calls start pouring in as soon as temperatures hit the 70s and continue until fall when heating issues begin. About 10 years ago, Wright purchased large trucks for the business that he and his son stock with common heating and air-conditioning parts. That means they can fix a unit in a timely fashion. “Nine times out of ten, we have the parts we need on the truck, so we can fix something right there,” Wright said. “That is the advantage — you don’t have to make an extra trip.” And as for the future? “I love what I do,” he said with a laugh. “And I don’t plan on retiring any time soon.”

Chowning’s Tavern opens as ale house Chowning’s Tavern on Duke of Gloucester Street in Colonial Williamsburg has reopened as an 18th-century ale house with a new menu, hours and decor. Alewerks Brewing Co. of Williamsburg has created craft beers for the tavern based on authentic recipes from the 18th century. The bar menu also features other beers, Virginia wines, cocktails and nonalcoholic beverages. A full-service bar is located in the arbor garden behind the tavern. A new menu available all day includes light fare such as pork sliders, flatbreads, corn chowder and salads. Part of the tavern’s interior now includes a display cabinet inside the entrance that holds archaeological fragments excavated from tavern sites throughout the Historic Area. Hours are 11:30 a.m.-11 p.m daily, and no reservations are required. The tavern will host “Beers in the ’Burg” from 4-7 p.m. May 23, June 20, Aug. 8 and Sept. 19. Guests will have the chance to taste 10 beers, including Old Stitch, Dear Old Mum and a third selection, that were created by Alewerks exclusively for Colonial Williamsburg. Jamestown Day

The Jamestown Settlement and Historic Jamestowne will present the annual Jamestown Day from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., May 9. The events planned are designed to be educational and fun for all ages. “Jamestown Day is one of the special days we present,” said Jamie Helmick, fort supervisor at Jamestown Settlement. “We treat it as a family day with a lot of activities for people to be entertained and to learn about Jamestown.” The event can be weather dependent, but in good weather up to 2,000 people can take in the festivities. This year, there are some new activities planned including a visit from the Virginia Living Museum. “They will present a program about the types of animals that the settlers may have seen when they arrived here,” Helmick said. Other presentations will include programs by The Mariners’ Museum, special musical entertainment and hands-on crafts for children. 34

“There will be two times during the day when kids will be able to make a craft,” Helmick explained. “There also will be some fair activities featuring entertainment of that time period. That will include a 17th century puppet show, juggling and music.” Kids will have the chance to try their hand at period games including rolling hoops, quoits and jousting. At 10 a.m., one of the three replica ships docked at the James River will set sail for maneuvers on the river, Helmick said. Historic Jamestowne will offer a variety of special programs including tours of the archaearium and ongoing archeological sites. “We have plenty of things that are planned for that day,” said Mark Summers, manager of public and educational programs at Historic Jamestowne. “It is like our fair day.” People will have a chance to take walking tours to see work being done on the actual archeological site. “What will be neat is that throughout the day, you will be able to see archeological work by the team,” Summers said. “People can watch people dig and talk
with volunteers or the archeologists themselves, and they can tell you what they are planning. If you think about your typical archeological site, it may be far away, you may not have the opportunity to interact with someone digging.” Jamestown Day marks the 408th anniversary of the founding of America’s first permanent English settlement. Want to go? There is separate admission to visit Historic Jamestowne and Jamestown Settlement. Free parking is available at both sites. Admission to Jamestown Settlement is $16.75 for adults, $7.75 for ages 6 through 12, and free for children under age 6. Residents of James City County, York County and the City of Williamsburg, including College of William and Mary students, receive complimentary admission with proof of residency. Historic Jamestowne adult admission is $14 and includes Yorktown Battlefield. National Parks passes and Preservation Virginia memberships are accepted, but a $5 fee may apply for entrance to Historic Jamestowne. The Williamsburg Women’s Chorus will present a spring concert at 7:30 p.m., May 15, at Walnut Hills Baptist Church. The event celebrates 50 years of choral music by the group, which now numbers 42 members. Since December 2005, the chorus has been led by musical director Ann Porter. The concert will feature works by Phyllis Varner, a former director of the chorus. Her composition, “Three Poems by Christina Rossetti,” will be directed by former musical director Cindy Freeman. The program also will feature two commissioned works. The first is “Still Here,” composed by Zack Taylor, a recent Belmont University graduate who will conduct the piece. The text for the work was written by chorus member Robin Cantor-Cooke. The group’s Choraliers will sing music of Gustav Holst and Eleanor Daly followed by a song written by Chilean Violeta Parra.
Former chorus member Deby Kidney will return to perform a duo with longtime chorus accompanist Christine Niehaus. The concert will conclude with another commissioned work, “The Gift to Sing,” by Gwyneth Walker. The event also will feature a display highlighting the group’s 50-year history with photographs and memorabilia. The committee was led by longtime chorus member Myrna Brinkley. Over the past five decades, the chorus has received several honors. Recently, a dozen singers were invited to participate in a tribute to Gwyneth Walker in New York City. Want to go? Festival Williamsburg returns Memorial Day weekend The Virginia Arts Festival will present its annual Festival Williamsburg series of concerts with events beginning May 21, and running through May 24. It’s time to Pedal the Parkway The 18th annual Pedal the Parkway will be held from 8 a.m.-1.pm. May 2. The event is free and open to the public. All riders must wear helmets. Pedal the Parkway takes place on the Colonial Parkway from Newport Avenue near Colonial Williamsburg to the entrance to Jamestown. During this event, the National Park Service closes the parkway to motor vehicles from Williamsburg to Jamestown. The non-competitive activity enables cyclists, runners and walkers to go at their own pace. Free bike helmets for kids are distributed at ECO Discovery Park while they last. New Quarter Park turns 30 A celebration of New Quarter Park’s 30th anniversary will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on May 2, at the park located on Lakeshead Drive. The park will host a variety of activities including a bird walk by members of the Williamsburg Bird Club, a trail hike by the Tidewater Appalachian Trail Club and a mountain bike trail ride by The Eastern Virginia Mountainbike Association. An archaeologist from the Fairfield Foundation will present an artifact washing station. There, visitors can wash 17th and 18th century artifacts recovered from a site occupied by early owners of the site and slaves who lived on the property when it was an outlying farm attached to Carter’s Grove plantation. Doug DeBerry will lead a Botany Walk and will present research conducted by professors and graduate students of the William and Mary Biology Department who use New Quarter as a research site. The Virginia Native Plant Society will hold a sale of native plants, and The NASA Skywatchers Club, who regularly hosts nighttime skywatching events, will set up their scopes and invite visitors to safely view the sun. Showcasing talent at New Town Art Gallery %\ $QQ 0 (À PHW]
When Anne Kushnick and six other local woman artists founded New Town Art Gallery in 2010, they were entering unchartered creative territory. Working as a team, the women opened the expansive space at the end of Main Street. It quickly caught on as more people visited and more artists were interested in exhibiting their work. “It has been a true blessing,” Kushnick said in a recent interview. “We are celebrating five years this month.” Other founding members include Gulay Berryman, Sue Danehy, Kay Krapfl, Mary Buenting, Sharon Parker and Renee Kennedy. Resident artists are Lori Jakubow, June Skalak, Roseanna Thoman and Dorothy Grebos. Every three months, the gallery welcomes visiting artists. Rice Trolan, an active member of the local art community, recently exhibited several of his watercolors. Those who display artwork are required to take shifts during gallery hours. “I think that is what allows us to sell so much of our work here,” Trolan said recently. “People love to come into the gallery and meet the artists. They love talking to us.”
In addition to an artistic showcase, the 4,000-square-foot gallery has become a hub of community activity. It often hosts events for charitable organizations such as the the Williamsburg Players and the Heritage Humane Society. Individuals also can rent the space for weddings and other private events. This month, the artists will throw a five-year anniversary party that will be open to the community. Details are still being worked out. Kushnick credits the gallery’s success to the artists’ collaborative efforts. “Everyone has their own strengths,” she 3KRWRV E\ $QQ 0 (À PHW] said. “I don’t think we could have done it alone. Former resident wins big at international chef competition %\ $QQ 0 (ÀPHW]
Philip Tessier’s face breaks into a wide smile when he speaks about earning a Silver Medal at the recent Bocuse d’Or international cooking competition in Lyon, France. The 35-year old Tessier, who grew up in Williamsburg and most recently worked at The French Laundry in California, placed second in the recent contest, behind Norway and ahead of Sweden. The victory was especially rewarding because, prior to Tessier’s honor, American chefs had never placed higher than sixth in the competition’s 30-year history. “It was a huge moment of euphoria that all the work was paying off,” Tessier said recently. “The biggest take-away was the feeling of respect afterward that was so extraordinary, and to know that we had elevated American food and American chefs to another level.” His winning fare presented to the panel of 24 international judges was a meat dish of Barrel-Oak Roasted Guinea Hen and a fish dish of Brioche-Crusted Brown Trout Pave. The win follows nearly two years of preparation that found Tessier and his assistant, Skylar Stover, taking leave from their positions at The French Laundry, the renowned Napa Valley restaurant owned by Thomas Keller. Together they were coached by Gavin Kaysen of Spoon and Stable Restaurant in Minneapolis, who had competed at the Bocuse d’Or in 2007. They devised a Napa Valley theme for their entries. Tessier likened the preparation to athletes competing at an Olympic level. “Like a gymnast or a figure skater, you learn your moves,” he said. “And you have to practice the sequence. “When we competed, we had no notes, it was all from memory,” he said. “The challenge is to have it so organized that when you go to the competition, you are able to block out the noise from the stadium, the cameras, and the judges walking around you and watching you.” Tessier joked that to sharpen their concentration skills, he and Stover would play loud techno music in the practice kitchen to help them focus more intently.
Tessier began cooking at a young age when he would try to come up with imaginative ways to prepare food for his siblings. At age 16, he got a job in the kitchen of the Williamsburg Inn and learned under Hans Schadler and Claudia Fitzgerald. It was there he realized he belonged in the culinary world. His affinity for cooking challenges is rooted in his schooling at the Culinary Institute of America. He would often enter competitions for enjoyment and to earn extra money. Tessier’s parents, longtime York County residents Chris and Norman, attended the Lyon competition and were jubilant when the winners were announced. “We were so excited that he was rewarded for all the effort and commitment that he had put in,” Chris Tessier said. “Just to be able to reach the level of recognition for the United States, and what that means after 30 years of trying. To reach the podium and to be the first non-European country ever to get the silver award was definitely significant.” Philip Tessier admitted that he didn’t entertain the notion of competing in the Bocuse d’Or until he attended the event in 2013. While there, he was selected to prepare a course for a special dinner served to the competing chefs. After that experience, he began thinking about making a run himself. Chef Paul Bocuse created the Bocuse d’Or International Culinary Competition in 1987 to broaden the public’s understanding of the elements that go into creating world-class cuisine, according to the Bocuse d’Or USA website. Teams are given five and a half hours to create platter presentations with meat and fish accompanied by three original garnishes. The selections are judged on flavor, presentation and technique. Tessier hasn’t returned to The French Laundry. He’s weighing several options for his next culinary move, including writing a book about the experience. No matter what his next success brings him, this victory at the Bocuse d’ Or will always remain sweet. “It is an expression of our craft at its highest level,” he said. “It is an expression of creativity and technique in a pressure-cooked environment.”
