Summer brings freedom and fresh air, and what better way to capture summer’s essence than a festival? This month’s big event is Funhouse Festival, a three-day outdoor music fest with a lineup selected by, and featuring, Grammy-winner and Williamsburg native Bruce Hornsby. You won’t want to miss it. It’s a big month for local theatre, too, as “Rent” hits the Williamsburg Players’ stage and the 38th annual Virginia Shakespeare Festival once again fills Phi Beta Kappa Hall – this year, with something a little different on the schedule. For a festival that satisfies a different sense, head over to Busch Gardens for the Food and Wine Festival, offering authentic food and drink samples from around the world. For food options a little closer to home, check out this issue’s tips on enjoying al fresco dining. Or if you prefer dining at home, discover the best places for fresh ingredients in our roundup of local farmers markets. There’s really no better time than summer to enjoy the outdoors, and the scope of the area’s outdoor offerings stretches far and wide. From exploring the history of Jamestown, Yorktown or Colonial Williamsburg, to enjoying a variety of waterfront vistas, from biking around town (and beyond) to running around dog parks with your furry friend – this month’s issue reveals some classic ways, and some different ways, to get outside. Hopefully, you’ll find some ideas to get summer started.

When the weather heats up, get wet! By Adrienne Mayfield Water is an important part of work and play on the Virginia Peninsula. Whether you’re a swimmer, sailor or enjoy the sound of waves crashing on the shore, there are many ways to enjoy the water in the Historic Triangle. Here are a few of them: Set sail on Yorktown schooners Land lovers can play sailor for the day on the Yorktown schooners. The tall ships – dubbed Serenity and Alliance – are modeled after ships used during the Revolutionary War era, according to the Sail Yorktown website. Passengers will cruise along the York River past the Yorktown Battlefield where Revolutionary soldiers won America’s independence from Great Britain in 1781. Along the way passengers may see some of the sights that make living in the Historic Triangle so special, including dolphins, osprey, maritime workers and naval ships. Afterwards visitors can enjoy Yorktown Beach, Riverwalk Landing Pier and surrounding eateries and gift shops. The two-hour cruises depart daily from Riverwalk Landing Pier, 425 Water St., Yorktown. The ships leave at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and sunset. Sunset cruises leave at 6:30 p.m. from June 1 to Aug. 23. Day cruises cost $37 for adults and $22 for children 12 years old and younger. Sunset sails are $37 per person. Take a dip in Upper County Park Swimmers can stay cool in the pool at Upper County Park in James City County. The 56-acre park features a 25-meter outdoor

pool and a smaller toddler pool, according to the James City County website. Pool passes vary in cost. Local swimmers can swim daily for between $3 and $6, or get a seasonal pass for between $40 and $60. Costs are slightly higher for non-residents, county spokeswoman Veda McMullen said. The park also features playgrounds, volleyball and basketball courts, a 4-mile mountain bike trail and multi-use trails, the website states. Visitors can buy snacks at the concession stand or enjoy a picnic under one of the outdoor shelters. The park is located at 180 Leisure Road, Williamsburg. It is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset. There is no cost to get into the park. Catch a tan at Jamestown Beach Event Park There’s always time for fun in the sun at Jamestown Beach Event Park. Sun bathers can catch some rays on the beach while fishers cast a line in the James River, according to the James City County website. Visitors can take a walk along the observation pier or go canoeing, kayaking or paddle boating from the launch area, according to the website. Concessions are available at the park, but visitors are welcome to bring their own propane grill for cooking out. There are also charcoal grills available at the park, but they cannot be reserved. The park is located at 2205 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg. It is open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. James City County and Williamsburg residents can park their cars for free at the park, McMullen said. A parking fee for nonresidents will be in place this summer, although James City County Parks and Recreation has not determined how much it will cost, McMullen said. above: Beachgoers enjoy the warm weather at Yorktown Beach. file photo

Area farmers markets, a breath of fresh air

Yorktown Market Days

Smthfield Farmers Market

By Adrienne Mayfield Farmers markets are a breath of fresh air for savvy shoppers on the Peninsula. The area is home to several open-air farmers markets nestled in the heart of historic venues like Colonial Williamsburg and the Yorktown waterfront. Shoppers can buy locally grown fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh-baked bread and sweet treats. Enjoy the sounds of live music from area bands, or take home a piece of art crafted on the Peninsula. As important as what shoppers can buy at the farmers markets is what is priceless – the experience of shopping from vendors they personally know and trust, said Karla Peck of Village Events. The York County company hosts Yorktown Market Days. “The farmers market is one big family,” Peck said, adding that farmers markets are an excellent way to promote local businesses and farmers alike. Grown up children 21 or older may also wish to take dad out for a drink. Try a restaurant like Dog Street Pub, one of the local breweries including The Virginia Beer Company on Second Street or AleWerks Brewing Company off Mooretown Road, or the Silver Hand Meadery on Monticello Avenue and the Williamsburg Winery on Wessex Hundred. Dad might also prefer a relaxing day, soaking up some sun at Jamestown Beach or simply spending time at home with the family. Virginia Capital Trail a hot spot for biking By Kellen Holtzman There is no shortage of great places to bike in Williamsburg, whether on a leisurely stroll or a mountain bike trail trek, and no better month to celebrate the cycling destination than June. Nancy Carter, a Williamsburg Area Bicyclists member, served as the

chair for May’s Pedal the Parkway event is positive about the local cycling scene. “For all ages and all skill levels, Williamsburg-James City County is pretty great,” said Carter. Carter’s favorite new place to ride is the Virginia Capital Trail, a paved pedestrian and bicycle path that opened last fall and connects

Jamestown and Richmond along the Route 5 corridor, spanning approximately 52 miles. Rick Bartels, director of the local Colonial Revolution youth mountain bike team, is just as excited about the Capital Trail that he calls “flat and fun,” and believes it is on the fast track to becoming a tourist hot spot. “It’s going to be a big resource and it is a big resource,” he said. “It’s a big deal.” The Capital Trail can be accessed from Williamsburg at Greensprings and Chickahominy Riverfront parks. For local bike rentals, Carter and Allen Turnbull, a certified instructor through the League of American Bicyclists, each suggest the James City County Marina. The marina is in close proximity to both the Capital Trail and Jamestown Island. Make the

dog days of summer fun days with your pet By Brandy Centolanza Dogs love warm weather and sunshine just like their human companions, and there are plenty of trails in town to enjoy the summer with your pet. In observation of National Trails Day on June 4, Heritage Humane Society and James City County will partner to host the fourth annual Tails on the Trail at Freedom Park on Centerville Road. “We want to encourage families to get out and be active with their pets during the summer months,” says Kimberly Laska, executive director of Heritage Humane Society. From 9 a.m. until noon, folks can bring their dogs for a self-guided tour and explore the eight trails open at Freedom Park. Volunteers from Heritage Humane Society will also bring shelter dogs to the event, “which is a win for everyone,” says Laska. Beyond Freedom Park, dogs are welcome on trails throughout the summer at Greensprings Trail, New Quarter Park near Queens Lake, as well as others. For a different view of the world, take your dog for a stroll along Duke of Gloucester Street in Colonial Williamsburg. Dogs should be leashed, have up-to-date vaccines, and be healthy. “One of our favorite places for walking our own pets is DoG Street,” says Laska. Waller Mill Park on Airport Road is also a great place to be out and about with your dog. You can

18

hike the trails, or utilize the dog park there to let your pet run free. There have been more than 2,500 memberships to the dog park since it opened in 2005. “Visitation to the dog park varies greatly depending on the weather, and the evenings and weekends are by far our busiest times,” shares Michael VanAudenhove, manager of Waller Mill Park. “Over the last year we have been averaging around 425 member visitations every month.” In addition to the park, VanAudenhove suggests walking your dog in Colonial Williamsburg or on the trails at the College of William & Mary. “They offer well-maintained paths that are clear of cars, a good mix of sun and shade, and there are often other dogs there to socialize with,” he says. “There are also trails at other city parks like Redoubt Park on Quarterpath Road, which has the Tuttle Trail.” No matter where you choose to roam with your dog, be sure to keep your pet safe. Know your dog’s limitations, make sure the animal is properly hydrated, and keep him out of the sun on extremely hot days. Remember not to lock your dog in the car in the heat. “Fur coats get awfully warm in the sun,” notes VanAudenhove. On really hot days, Laska suggests cooling off with your dog. “A fun way to keep your dog cool outside is to give them access to a kiddie pool filled with clean water, or make them popsicles with low sodium chicken broth and treats,” she says. “What a fun way to enjoy time with your favorite furry friend.” Heritage Humane Society will end the summer with another dog-friendly event, Drool in the Pool, at the pool at Chickahominy Riverfront Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 10, admission is $10 per dog.

Virginia Shakespeare Festival notes 400th anniversary of Bard’s death By Heather Bridges In the years since William Shakespeare’s death, the Bard lives on, his voice and his words ever clearer, continually brought to life on stages and screens. This year, though, is special: It is the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. And this year’s Virginia Shakespeare Festival promises to be special, too. In its 38th anniversary season, the festival presents “Romeo and Juliet,” “Cymbeline” and “The Gravedigger’s Tale,” which is a brand new interpretation of “Hamlet.”

Romeo and Juliet Nine years have passed since the festival last produced “Romeo and Juliet.” It was time to present the famed love story once again. “I had a strong sense of what I wanted to do with it,” said director Christopher Owens. He has directed “Romeo and Juliet” before. The play starts as a comedy, he said. It’s funny, light. It keeps the audience laughing. “Until the moment that Mercutio gets killed,” Owens said. At that point, he said a “broad, bright, sunny” production sharply turns into something “increasingly narrow and cold and dark.”

“It’s got this huge sort of scope to it here I think is going to be an interesting thing,” Owens said. Cymbeline As one of Shakespeare’s final plays, “Cymbeline” depicts a forbidden romance between Imogen, daughter of the King of Britain, and the lowborn Posthumus. It was last performed at the festival in 1983. “The show’s not done that often,” said Owens, who also serves as the festival’s artistic director. “It’s a challenging fantasy piece.” Megan Behm, a theatre professional based in Washington, D.C., directs the production. Aesthetically, the production will feel like HBO’s “Game of Thrones” television series, Owens said. “Now, I can’t bring any dragons on stage,” he said. “Other elements of it I think will be very much in that sort of particular fantasy world.” The Gravedigger’s Tale In partnership with the Folger Theatre in Washington, D.C., the festival is bringing a new piece to this year’s lineup, a one-man play presented in Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall’s 140-seat studio theatre. “The Gravedigger’s Tale” retells the story of “Hamlet” from the perspective of the Gravedigger, played by Louis Butelli. The play was developed by Robert Richmond. It’s a brief, fun production with strong audience interaction. Audiences will discover pieces of

bone scattered around the theatre, each tagged with a question. For example, Owens said, “Was Ophelia truly mad?” The Gravedigger then answers each question, “using Shakespeare’s words, not only of one character, but sometimes of multiple characters, in order to address that issue in ‘Hamlet,’” Owens said. “It’s really fascinating in the way that it works,” Owens continued. “The performance is a little bit different each night.”

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JUNE 2016

By Heather Bridges Bruce Hornsby says he’s in his Roger Maris year. Sports fans might recognize the name of the Yankees outfielder who, during the 1961 season, hit 61 home runs. The 61st home run set a Major League Baseball record, surpassing Babe Ruth’s 60 home runs. At age 61, Hornsby isn’t setting records. He’s making them. The Grammy-winning musician and Williamsburg native releases a new album June 17 with his band The Noisemakers. And “Rehab Reunion” is different from anything Hornsby has ever done – written not on his usual piano, but on dulcimer. “It’s a very stringy affair: dulcimer, mandolin, fiddle, acoustic guitar and electric,” Hornsby said in an email interview while on tour in Connecticut. “It is clearly different from any other record I’ve made,” he said, “but is reminiscent or tangentially related stylistically to two others: the Skaggs-Hornsby bluegrass records of 2007 and 2013, and my first record of 1986.” That first record, “The Way It Is,” set the stage for Hornsby’s career. At the 1987 Grammy Awards, Bruce Hornsby and the Range snagged Best New Artist. He’s collaborated with Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, Stevie Nicks, Ricky Skaggs, Spike Lee, Ornette Coleman, Bonnie Raitt and more. Yet nearly 30 years and 20 albums after “The Way It Is,” Hornsby’s career remains vibrant, ever fueled by creativity. “I’m a lifelong student, always looking for new inspiration and

new musical areas to explore,” he said. “My more conservative fans sometimes don’t like where that leads me, and I apologize to them, but I have to always try to grow and evolve.” A week after the release of “Rehab Reunion,” Hornsby returns to his hometown to present “Funhouse Festival” in partnership with the Virginia Arts Festival. From June 24-26, the lawn of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg will echo with the sounds of not only Hornsby and his band, but an entire lineup of musicians. A lineup Hornsby pulled together. “It was very simple,” Hornsby said. “I just wanted a stylistically varied program featuring amazing artists who are friends of mine, people I’ve worked with over the years.” In a way, Funhouse Festival reflects the musical variety of Hornsby’s career. There are Friday’s bluegrass-focused performances from Hornsby and Grammy-winner Ricky Skaggs, as well as “jamgrass” group Greensky Bluegrass. Saturday performances include singer-songwriters Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle, jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette with Ravi Coltrane and Matt Garrison and, finally, Bruce Hornsby and The Noisemakers performing both

“Rehab Reunion” and “The Way It Is.” The festival closes Sunday with performances from blues legends The Taj Mahal Trio, Irish vocalist Aoife O’Donovan and another Hornsby and The Noisemakers set. “I think the lineup is right there where we wanted it,” Hornsby said. Hornsby still calls Williamsburg home. When asked about his favorite local spots for live music, Hornsby said he enjoys Second Sundays, as well as Seasons and the Trellis. As far as live music, though, Funhouse Fest could be different from the likes of anything Williamsburg has seen. “I do think this is a unique festival in the history of the ‘Burg,” Hornsby said, “but what do I know?”

A history lesson that’s lovely to hear By Ryan McKinnon Come listen to an 18thcentury chamber organ played in the oldest college building in the United States. Each Saturday at 10 a.m. the Wren Chapel, on the campus of the College of William and Mary, hosts a half-hour organ concert. The brief performance includes a talk on the history of the organ, the chapel and the music. Rebecca Davy, the Music Director and Organist at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, said just listening to the organ is a form of a history lesson. “What is remarkable about this instrument is how well it was preserved,” Davy said. “Through an instrument like this we can hear exactly how some of the instruments sounded in that time.” And she said it is unusual to allow musicians to play such an old organ. Normally, antique instruments are too fragile to play, but Colonial Williamsburg allows a handful of local organists to play the 18th- century organ weekly. The organists typically play historic 18th century music to the crowds that can range from as small as six to as many as 120. Davy recommended making a day of it – after learning about 18th century music and culture at the organ concert, make the short walk across S. Boundary Street to the Williamsburg Farmers Market for lunch.

Volunteers share their wealth -- time

Hospice House Volunteers

Photo courtesy of Literacy for Life

By Austin Bogues If you’re hoping to find ways to give back to the community, there are plenty of opportunities available for seniors and others who want to give their time and effort to worthy causes. With a wide array of volunteer and charitable organizations, Williamsburg offers a rich variety of ventures for helping out. “Think about what it is you’re passionate about: mentoring youth or teaching someone, helping someone with their literacy skills, helping someone achieve their GED, representing those who are most vulnerable in their society,” said Liz Parman, interim director of the United Way of Greater Williamsburg. “I know that many organizations that we fund also rely heavily on volunteers, CASA uses volunteers, that is a very intense volunteer opportunity, as they advocate for abused and negelected children. Arc of Greater Williamsburg uses many volunteers to help with disabled. Walk the Talk is a local organization that recruits mentors for incarcerated individuals at the local jail. They’re a faith-based group, and apply mentorship and guidance for those who are locked up,” Parman said. 38

“Once you can decide what is your passionate about you find an organization that best fits in with your interest.” The following is a listing of volunteer opportunities in the Greater Williamsburg community. This list is not exhaustive but gives a variety of volunteer opportunities at local non-profits serving a variety of populations. local business profile

Still making 'em laugh at Comedy Club of Williamsburg By Austin Bogues This year the Comedy Club of Williamsburg celebrates 3 years in the area. Parked inside the Double Tree by Hilton near Kingsmill, three comedians grace the stage on Friday and Saturday nights. Some are local, some come from across the country. Ed Kappes, 57, of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., who owns the club, started his first comedy club in 1984, after years of working in the restaurant industry. “As anyone has been in the restaurant business would know. It’s really hard work and takes up all of your time. I was ready for a change, I started looking for businesses to buy. I came across this business broker that had a comedy club for sale,” Kappes said. “We started negotiations and we’ve grown it to four, Williamsburg, being our fourth,” Kappes said.

WANT TO GO? The club is located at 50 Kingsmill Road, Williamsburg. For more information, you can visit comedyclubwilliamsburg.com, call 757-286-9448 or email comedyclubwb@gmail.com

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JUNE 2016

He said the club, which is unique because it doesn’t have a permanent venue, was ideal for Williamsburg because of the strong tourist population and local college audience. “It’s a highly visited area, there’s not a ton of things to do at night time, outside of Busch Gardens,” he said. “We’re not bricks and mortar. It’s a little bit different than your traditional club. Williamsburg really couldn’t support a traditional comedy club; you’d have to get folks 7 times a week for a full time one. But the shows on Friday or Saturday are the strength.”

The Welcome Mat is Always Out at Colonial Heritage! By Warren Spence When you are driving on Route 60 and come across Colonial Heritage, by Lennar, are you aware of the enticing amenities that should encourage you to stop in? Whether you are considering purchasing a new home or finding a place to enjoy a round of golf or a great meal or hold an event…Colonial Heritage welcomes you. These amenities are centered at the 25,000 square foot Colonial Heritage Club, which offers visitors, locals, and residents the perfect location for award-winning golf, fine dining and entertainment, as well as a dramatic site for hosting weddings and special events. Golfers sing the praises of the 18-hole Arthur Hills Championship Golf Course that winds through rolling hills, streams, and mature hardwood forest. They like the stimulating challenge of the 6,889 yard, par 72 well-groomed course. They also like the pro shop, driving range, and putting green to help them get started with their outing. The popular end of the outing is a stop at the clubhouse to recount the highlights of their game over a chilled beverage and a delicious light meal. No wonder Colonial Heritage Club was voted Coastal Virginia Magazine’s “Best Golf Course in the 757!” Call 757-6452030 to book your tee time. Executive Chef William Slade, a seasoned professional, has carefully crafted a menu featuring classic American dishes to create a memorable dining experience. The Heritage Room offers memorable fine dining. The Grille serves tasty favorites of lighter fare. Check out the popular “10 for $10” menu. Flip flops can get pretty fancy, but be sure your feet get support Photo by Heather Bridges

By Brandy Centolanza

Gold flip flops with gems and floral designs are big.

Flip flop season is officially upon us. So what’s new for this popular shoe for the beach, the pool, and beyond? When it comes to flip flops, the traditional, flat varieties aren’t as preferable as they used to be because they’re uncomfortable and lack support. There is also the easy wear and tear of the shoe. “It used to be that flip flops were very uncomfortable, but now you can purchase them with memory foam,” says Rick Wright, general manager of Shoe Carnival in Settler’s Market. Men and boys, in particular, are looking for comfortable flip flops that they can wear with dressy casual apparel like a pair of khaki shorts and a dress shirt. “For the most part, it is about functionality,” Wright says. In women’s styles, the ladies prefer a wedge style flip flop -- a flip flop sandal with a platform heel -- or a low heel, a shoe that can be worn at the office or to a party. “Women like flip flops with not too high of a heel in brighter colors, like corals, whites, yellows,” shares Wright. “Gold is popular too. Men are the opposite. They still want the darker colors.” Scott Herlitz, the operation team manager and shoe manager at Belk in Windsormeade Marketplace, sees the same trends at his store. Customers want flip flops that are “very colorful -- bright colors,” Herlitz says. “A lot of people are also asking for flip flops with jewels on them. We are also seeing a lot of fringe.” 44

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / JUNE 2016

When choosing a pair of flip flops, “basically it comes down to your own sense of style,” Herlitz says. “I would suggest buying your outfits first and then matching your shoes to your outfits.” Lance De St. Croix, president of Shoesters, Inc. on North Boundary Street, which carriers Birkenstock, Finn Comfort, Gabor, and other brands, says that this season is “showing an ode to the classics. “Birkenstocks are carrying a lot of momentum as we enter another warm weather season,” he says. “The Arizona is the iconic ‘Birk,’ but some cute, more feminine styles like the Gizeh and Mayari are growing in popularity. This season as with every season, there will be new color additions that are on pace with what you can see at the fashion runway shows all over the world. However, it never hurts to stick with a basic neutral that you can wear every day and goes with anything. “Whichever style you choose, just make sure that before you decide, do yourself a favor and try on something that offers a higher quality foot bed with some arch support,” he warns. De St. Croix suggests people with foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis be cautious of wearing flat flip flops with little or no support. “Sure, standard flip-flops are inexpensive, but you are doing your feet a disservice by wearing them,” he says. “Buying a quality product that actually supports your arches will of course cost more, but it is an investment purchase in your foot health and well-being that will last for several years.”

A double-take on the

first English settlement By Steve Vaughan Jamestown is arguably the most important historical site in the United States. So it’s only reasonable that the Historic Triangle should have two of them. And that the newest is the oldest. For many years it was thought that the actual site of the Jamestown Fort had been inundated by the James River. So in 1957, to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the settlement at Jamestown — the first permanent English settlement in the New World — the state created Jamestown Settlement. The Settlement is a history museum with a recreation of the original fort, a Powhatan Indian Village and the three ships that the original settlers sailed to Virginia. However in 1994, archeologists from the Preservation Virginia Jamestown Rediscovery Project, headed by William Kelso, located the original fort site, only a small portion of which had been submerged under the river. This led to the creation of Historic Jamestowne, a site on Jamestown Island jointly administered by the National Park Service and Preservation Virginia, containing a visitor center with historic galleries, an active archeological dig and the unique Archaearium, which displays the artifacts unearthed at the dig. Among the summer events at Jamestown Settlement: Bartering for a Continent: How Anglo-Indian Trade Shaped America. This is a special exhibition which opens June 4. Bartering for a Continent will explore the importance of trade between American Indians and English colonists, from the founding of Jamestown through the American Revolution, and the role of Virginia in the development of a new world of exchange in goods and commodities in North America. Historic Trades Fair. Takes place June 4-5. Blacksmiths, potters, turners, carvers, spinners and more gather at Jamestown Settlement to showcase historical trades and sell crafts and wares.

Jamestown Settlement’s historic galleries, movie and recreations of the fort, the Indian village and the three ships are always available. Summer events at Historic Jamestowne: Green Spring Open House- July 9-10. "Retreat from Green Spring" 235th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War battle fought near the site of the 17th century Green Spring mansion. Reenactors will simulate the American retreat from the battle to Green Spring mansion. At the mansion site will be an American camp with special programs planned for demonstrations regarding camp life, medical treatment of the wounded, artillery and light infantry tactics. Take a shot at Colonial Williamsburg musket range By Steve Vaughan Since mid-March, Colonial Williamsburg has offered offering guests a new way to engage with 18th-century history at a musket firing range where they can fire replicas of historical firearms. It’s garnered Colonial Williamsburg some unusual attention. Guests have the opportunity to fire two replica weapons — a fowling piece, essentially an 18thcentury shotgun, and a musket of the type that would have been used by the Continental Army early in the American Revolutionary War. The range can accommodate six shooters at once, with one range officer working with each set of two shooters. The range officers — hired for their firearms expertise — load the weapons and then hand them to the shooters already pointed downrange. They guide shooters through the rest of the firing process. Shooters will get the chance to try both and then choose their favorite for more shots. Each guest takes two shots with each gun and then chooses which they like better to take six more shots. Once the smoke has cleared and the range master says the range is clear, the instructors will retrieve the targets for the guests to take with them.

Learn how to fire flintlock weapons of the colonial time at Colonial Williamsburg's Educational Musket shooting range. Photo by Joe Fudge

WANT TO GO? The shooting range is limited to guests over 14 years old, those younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $119 per shooter. That pays for ten shots and a history lesson. Hours: The range operates seven days a week with four one-hour sessions beginning at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tickets: only available for purchase at Colonial Williamsburg ticketing locations with valid photo ID and cannot be reserved in advance. Ticketed guests must arrive at the lobby of the Williamsburg Lodge 15 minutes prior to their session’s scheduled start time for shuttle transportation to the musket range, and should expect to arrive back at the lodge 15 minutes after the session's scheduled end time. explores creativity, mortality By Austin Bogues The Williamsburg Players will put on the musical Rent from June 2-18. The play, written by Jonathan Larson and based loosely on the opera La Boheme, dives into deep themes of the AIDS crisis that emerged in the ‘80s and early ‘90s. It features hits like the ensemble classic “Seasons of Love.” For Trey Heath, 25, who will play Roger Davis in the show, it’s important to add full-bodied character portrayals to the roles. “I’ve seen other people do this role. I’ve seen it done so many different ways. He’s going through a tough time. Roger is HIV positive, this was during a time when HIV was killing people really quickly, you got diagnosed with HIV and you died within two to 4 years right there in the late 80s early 90s. He’s cut himself off from everyone in dealing with his own time—but he also still has that fun side, he’s still that heavy punk rocker, I wanted to make sure I showed both sides.” The theater is located at 200 Hubbard Lane, Williamsburg. For information on tickets and show times, visit williamsburgplayers.org or call 757-229-0431.

food & drink

Sample the world from the comfort of Busch Gardens By Steve Vaughan Since 2013 Busch Garden Williamsburg’s Food & Wine Festival has taken guests on a culinary trip around the world. The fourth edition of the festival gives them the chance to stay closer to home. The festival has expanded its offering each year and one of the two new cuisines for 2016 is Virginia food. Located in the Scotland section of the park, near Highland Stables, the Virginia food booth offers some interesting takes on some traditional Virginia dishes. Visitors can crunch into pork rinds with Virginia dips (deviled ham pate, pimento cheese spread, smoked bacon & onion jam) or start off with some she-crab soup. You can’t have Virginia food without ham, so the festival offers a Smithfield ham tasting, including Red Eye Country Ham, Hickory Smoked Pitt Ham & Applewood Carved Ham. Bacon is well represented

as well from bacon and cheddar hushpuppies to pecan, bacon and chocolate bars. Beverages include Virginia wines and beers and a signature cocktail, the Apple Pie Moonshine. 2016’s other new cuisine is Hawaiian. Located in the park’s Ireland section near Castle O’Sullivan, the offerings at the Hawaii stand range from fried sweet potatoes, taro root & beet chips with caramelized sweet onion dip to a Spam slider to tuna sushi. Returning cuisines are American Southwestern, Asian, Canadian, crepes and coffee, French, French Quarter (New Orleans), German, Greek, Irish, Italian and Spanish.

A closer look at

al fresco dining

By Heather Bridges Al fresco dining seems a simple enough concept, at first thought. A meal, an outdoor setting – what more could be involved? A lot, actually. A successful outdoor dining experience hinges on a number of factors falling into place. Local restaurant owners and experts offered a behind-the-scenes glimpse – things restaurants do, or should do, to make al fresco dining a pleasant option for restaurantgoers. “Eating outside changes the psychology of the diners,” said Adam Steely, Blue Talon Bistro’s general manager and co-owner. “I think you get more relaxed and more casual ... the food offerings and the drink offerings need to reflect that.” “The food can be lighter, the portions can be smaller,” he continued. “The beverage selections can be fresher, lighter.” Like dry rosé, for example. Blue Talon has only six outdoor tables for two, but Steely said it’s often a “homerun” when outdoor

diners are given the rosé menu. Fat Canary in Merchants Square operates with a similar philosophy, offering a more casual patio menu. But for Cathy Power Pattisall, general manager of both

Fat Canary and The Cheese Shop, the al fresco dining experience necessitates comfort. “I think you want to be in an environment that includes a physically comfortable space,” said Pat-

tisall. In addition to a spacious and well-maintained open patio, Fat Canary has covered a side patio, equipped with fans and heaters for times when the weather’s not ideal. Berret’s Seafood Restaurant and Taphouse Grill makes comfort a priority, too. While the restaurant

offers some outdoor seating, the Taphouse Grill is a covered, yet completely outdoor space. “We focus on making it comfortable,” said general manager JR Powell. With a bar, live music, three televisions and cornhole boards on the lawn, “we’re just

trying to make it fun,” Powell said. “It’s just a really nice spot,” Powell said of Berret’s location along South Boundary St. Of course, atmosphere and ambience are integral to the al fresco experience. At Fat Canary, “We have this beautiful environment in Colonial Williamsburg. We have beautiful planters. We’ve got great lighting,” Pattisall said. “The community that we happen to be in in The Cheese Shop and the Fat Canary building is so pleasing to the eye.” In the same community, just across the street, stands The Trellis Bar and Grill, a longstanding outdoor option in Williamsburg. “People love to dine outside because of the view,” said general manager Louise Wood. “Just the ambience of the Trellis exterior, you know… sitting outside, watching the people go by.” David Nicholson, former food writer at the Daily Press, offered some practical al fresco considerations. Nicholson spent years writing about food and restaurants throughout Hampton Roads. As casual as the outdoor experience is, “I think a restaurant needs to treat it just like they would their indoor area,” Nicholson said. “The service needs to be a good quality, you have to accommodate.” Cover is equally important. “They need to be covered – which not all of them are,” he said. “You need to have a cover on there just to keep the hot sun away.” Still, with everything done to enhance al fresco dining, some things are out of restaurants’ control – weather, bugs, other natural elements. “Just be prepared,” Nicholson said. “It might be a little chilly, it might be a little hot.”
