Every December, The Virginia Gazette publishes its annual “Best Of” list. Businesses campaign for what inevitably leads to an increase in both local and tourist traffic during the remaining year. Where is the best sandwich? The best dry cleaning? The best place to play nine holes? A town’s businesses are, in many ways, the structure of its community. However, the ambience of a town comes from something less tangible. This year, The Original Williamsburg Magazine is adding Williamsburg’s “Best Bets” alongside its Best Of list. These are the places and activities that will truly shape your experience. Whether you recently relocated here, are a stalwart local, or have come down for the weekend, we invite you to the loveliest nooks and crannies of our town. We have done the research. Watch the sunset
Take the scenic route: The Colonial Parkway is a beautiful drive spanning twenty-three miles between Williamsburg and Yorktown. The structure and positioning of the road provide a fantastic view of its lush surroundings. With a multitude of overlooks and historic markers, The Colonial Parkway provides ample opportunity for the perfect James River sunset. 10

Stroll about
Head down to Duke of Gloucester Street around 6 p.m. as Colonial Williamsburg takes a breath between the bustle of daytime tourists and the beginning of evening Colonial Williamsburg programs. Sip a hot cider, nibble a ginger cake, and warm your hands by one of the fiery sconces that guides the way down this historic cobblestone street.

Take a hike and/or hear an echo
Bundle up and take a picturesque hike through Waller Mill Park. Or, rent a canoe or paddleboat to explore the water. If you turn to the right when paddling away from the entrance, then you will see a small tunnel leading to the other side of the reservoir. See how many hearts you can spot amongst the tunnel’s graffiti. Shout your name and you’ll hear it echoed against the walls.

Enjoy a traditional Colonial drink
Head over to Chownings Tavern (pronounced “Chew-nings”) for some cozy cheer. Every night beginning at 5 p.m. (it gets a bit rowdier after 9 p.m.), Chownings transforms
into an authentic colonial tavern called Gambol’s. Join in the fun by grabbing a drink, enjoying a pub game, and stomping your feet along to the latest eighteenth century fiddling.

Get some friends together and join in the fun at Wine and Design. It doesn’t matter if you’re a regular Mary Cassatt or if you’ve never held a paintbrush. Wine and Design is loads of fun. They have everything you need for an evening of painting and vino. Just register through their website and arrive on time!
Plan a picnic
Pack a picnic basket, throw a big blanket in your car’s trunk, and head to The College of William and Mary’s Sunken Gardens. Located behind the Wren Building, The Sunken Gardens is a stalwart fixture in Williamsburg life. Both locals and students enjoy strolling the grounds, getting some work done on the steps, or having a sandwich on the green.

Hold a family photo shoot
Is Dad busy parking the car? Never fear. Add a Founding Father to your family photo with the addition of Thomas Jefferson. Head to Merchant Square in Colonial Williamsburg. Right outside The Kimball Theater, take a seat with our beloved statue of Thomas Jefferson while he pens a draft of the Declaration of Independence.

Have an exhange with a costumed interpreter
Where can you greet a costumed interpreter? The obvious answer is on the streets of Colonial Williamsburg or at Jamestown Settlement; however, locals know that interpreters need laundry detergent and eggs just like the rest of us. Keep your eyes peeled, and you’re very likely to spot someone in eighteenth-century regalia at the local grocery store or gas station!

The glass blowers at Jamestown Island, which is off the Colonial Parkway, began as the seventeenth-century version of a startup company. Today, artisans employ traditional methods to create unique pieces such as pitchers, bottles, and figurines. Be fascinated as these experts work with molten glass — the perfect place to warm up and learn something new on a chilly afternoon.

Don’t let Winter spoil your fun! Enjoy watching a live indoor game at Kaplan Arena at William and Mary Hall. Cheer on the Tribe at a William and Mary Basketball game. Now that the New Year is here, you may be looking for a fresh look for you or your home. So what is new in fashion and home décor for 2016? Pantone is the leader in color trend prediction. According to Pantone’s Fashion Color Report for 2016 listed on its website: “Colors this season transport us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves.” For both men and women, the top colors include rose quartz, serenity, buttercup, lilac gray, iced coffee, peach echo, snorkel blue, limpet shell, fiesta, and green flash. Meanwhile, Benjamin Moore, which takes the lead in interior design colors each year, has named white as the color trend for décor this year. Cheryl Olander, co-owner of Paisley Gifts in New Town, pays close attention to what is new and exciting when it comes to color. “We look to the color trends to develop our inventory for a new season,” she says. “Early on, you will see softer colors, pink, blue, coral and aqua with neutrals important as accents. As the weather warms up, there will be a transition to the more high-energy, vibrant colors that lend themselves to the summertime -- vibrant greens, blues, and yellows.” Nature themes will also be popular this year. Furniture with floral designs, faux fur, and organic shapes and textures, and dishes made from minerals will be trendy.
“Bringing the outdoors in [will be big],” shares Jennifer Raines, owner of Quirks of Art in High Street. “Consumers are experimenting with how to bring nature into every aspect of their homes.” When it comes to home décor, “Sustainability seems to be at the heart of most things being manufactured today,” Raines continues. “Recycling, repurposing, reinventing, and reusing will continue to be big trends.” Buying handmade artwork, jewelry, and accessories from small businesses will also be a focus for consumers. And when it comes to gifts, shoppers will want to purchase items that can be used year-round instead of seasonally. Shoppers should scout out what they are looking for often, as local stores are constantly bringing in new inventory with new colors and themes. Whether you are shopping for yourself, family or friends, the key is to be mindful of what you really want. “As with all things, when you are out shopping, you want to look for something to bring into your home and your life that works for you,” says Olander. “Something that enhances or updates your existing wardrobe or décor. You want to look first to those pieces that you already own and see what you can add to them, whether a new accessory, or maybe a new pillow or a tray. Something that works with what you already have and that you are excited about.”

A conversation with Colonial Williamsburg’s interior designer By Heather Bridges
With just two yards of fabric left, Cheryl Griggs wondered how she would use the material to tie a Colonial Williamsburg bedroom together. But Griggs, with the help of seamstresses Ann Minns and Jacqueline Brewington, made it work. The resulting idea: snip some flowers from the fabric’s floral design, apply them to window valences and sew the remaining fabric into throw pillows. Creativity and collaboration are woven into Griggs’ role as Colonial Williamsburg’s interior designer, a job she has held for nearly 17 years, on and off. Griggs directs decor, mainly. “But it’s really anything that’s involved with a look,” she explained. For example, she’s currently selecting new 30

uniforms for the Williamsburg Inn. Her design touches accent Colonial Williamsburg’s executive houses – such as Ludwell-Paradise and Prentis House – VIP houses, office spaces and hotel properties including the Williamsburg Inn, Williamsburg Lodge and others. Griggs’ creative process depends on the space, its location and use. “I think about what do we have in our inventory that would make the space work in the way that they want to use it?” she said. The inventory includes an extensive amount of furnishings, amassed by Colonial Williamsburg over time. Some pieces are reproductions or inspired by antiques from the Colonial Williamsburg Collection. Some are donated pieces. Some might be originals.

All chosen decorations, though, fit the look of the period – from the Revolutionary-era look of the Historic Area to the English Regency feel of the Williamsburg Inn. “We try to do as much in-house as possible, because we have so many skilled people,” Griggs said. Griggs collaborates often with Minns and Brewington as well as curators, artists and architectural historians, among others. Much of the job’s creativity surfaces in repurposing what Colonial Williamsburg already has. “When I say that we were green before green was the ‘in’ thing to be, I’m not kidding,” Griggs said. Sitting in the lobby of the Williamsburg Inn, Griggs explained some of the drapery has been used in the building for 40 years. “They’re so beautiful and so well-made, they don’t go out of style,” she said. That’s not to say Griggs and her design team
don’t innovate. But “It’s within a living museum,” Griggs said, “so it is different.” And it’s all in the details. Details so small that eyes might initially skim past, but details whose absence would be noticed. “It weaves this thread of the iconic things that we’re known for throughout the experience, all the way through,” Griggs said. Even in the design of the Visitor Center restroom, Griggs incorporated the Colonial Williamsburg look. Revibe:
“Design and Consign” By Heather Bridges
Revibe is many things. It’s a local consignment store, filled with eclectic items. It’s a furniture redesign and restoration business. It’s the passion project of Jared Ward and Kari Velandria, husband and wife duo. And it’s a fresh concept in Williamsburg. “It’s just having a new idea in this community,” Ward, 28, said. “It’s something different. It’s something fun. It’s kind of funky.” Opened by Ward and Velandria in July 2015, Revibe’s interior houses local art, handmade goods, one-of-a-kind decorations and furniture – each item specifically placed. Velandria’s talents include interior design, and Revibe also offers home staging and interior design services. But in the back of the shop, behind a door, in a small workroom filled with paint, furniture parts and tools is where the Revibe magic occurs. Ward and Velandria take worn, broken or unwanted pieces of furniture “and make them useful again, give them new life,” Ward said. Customers bring furniture to Revibe for repair. Services include upholstery, restoration and paint application. But Velandria and Ward also redesign furniture and create custom pieces. That’s the fun part. “There’s no boundaries,” Ward said. “It’s only limited by our imagination.” Jared Ward

And that innovation and creativity is the essence of Revibe. Ward and Velandria both possess an artistic spark – they’re also both musicians. At Revibe, the couple combines talents, working as a team to conceptualize and create. Ward said Velandria often comes up with ideas that he then engineers.
“We have that yin and yang,” he said. Ward described fastening an old checkerboard to the top of a wooden Wild Turkey liquor crate. He salvaged the legs from a destroyed table, attaching them to the crate to create a new table. A “revibed” table. Every piece of furniture tells a story, Ward said. “You just

Now that the holidays are over, it is time to get back to counting and cutting calories and losing any excess weight. Americans dine out four to five times a week, so how can you manage to eat healthy while enjoying a meal out on the town? Portion sizes at restaurants can be four to six times what we may normally eat at home. Megan R. Cordova, a registered dietitian with Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center offers a few suggestions, which include splitting a meal 46

with someone, having an appetizer as your meal, or choosing a soup or salad as a meal, opting for broth-based soups versus cream-based. “Eating at a restaurant doesn’t have to sabotage a healthy diet,” Cordova says. Other suggestions include: requesting salad dressing, butter, or sour cream on the side; substituting steamed vegetables for rice and fries; passing on the bread at the start of the meal; watching what you drink, especially when it comes to free soda refills; and skipping dessert, of course. You may also want to plan ahead so you don’t overindulge at dinner, check the menu

Some restaurants use fresh, local produce and other ingredients, and make their own sauces, pastas, and meats, or use organic, free-range meats and poultry. “We change our menu regularly to offer the best to our customers,” shares Rebecca Fiorello, who owns Maurizio’s Italian Restaurant with her husband. “We like to offer what we would eat ourselves at home and nothing of a lower standard. Anyone knows eating the healthiest you can is always the best option. Fresh is always best and having your entire menu made by you and not produced by a frozen food manufacturer is also always the best route to go. We know exactly what's in our food and the quality of the product used.” Choose a restaurant that offers a menu with numerous options that appeal to a variety of palates and dietary restrictions. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. “Going out to eat at a restaurant doesn't mean you have to eat unhealthy,” says Fiorello. “Even if you are watching your weight, most restaurants have healthy options. At our restaurant we are able to alter entrees if requested by a customer. For example, if something is sautéed or fried and the customer would like it grilled or baked.”
