WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2014

The last month of the year brings the cheer of the holiday season. Where did 2014 go? Around town there is much to see and do throughout the month. It opens with the “Big Events” of the annual Christmas Parade, Christmas Homes Tour and Grand Illumination, the weekend of Dec. 6-7. Even if you have taken in the events before, there is always something new. Those events are a great way to usher in the holiday season with friends and family. This month, the magazine features a variety of information regarding the holiday season through Dec. 31 and First Night. That non-alcoholic celebration of the New Year has grown exponentially over the years and counts on hundreds of volunteers who work all year to make sure it goes off smoothly! Our Women in Business Feature highlights Sande Hubbard, who has opened a new bead store in New Town, The Beadtender. Former owner of More than Just Beads, also located in New Town, Hubbard has a new store, new inventory and new stories to share with her customers. Our Local Spin features appropriately this month, The Christmas Shop, which has been located in Merchants Square for the past 50 years. Find out what items people return to the store again and again to purchase. Our Great Find this month is a Victorian dresser located at West Point Antiques, a short drive from Williamsburg. Looks like something that could be right complement for just the right room. Meet Michael Deitz of the College of William and Mary in our Head of the Class feature. This young man has been working tirelessly to help promote wellness on the campus by organizing the National Eating Disorders Walk on the campus. Don’t forget to take a walk through the Historic Area this month. The doors and windows of Colonial Williamsburg are bedecked in the natural Christmas decorations that a corps of foundation designers work tirelessly each year to produce. The most important thing to remember to do this month is to spend time with your friends and family. That is the greatest gift of all.

Original music for a classic season By Ann M. EÀmetz

Mark Bzdick of Bzdick Studio in Yorktown will present a special performance of his original songs and arrangements with a holiday theme. The event, “Sing a Song of Merry Christmas,” will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6 at the James-York Playhouse on Hubbard Lane. The event will feature a variety of music, performed by Bzdick’s students, including Williamsburg resident, Olivia Robinson. Ages of the performers range from 11 to adult and are comprised from

Bzdick’s Singing Actors Workshop and Ovation Class. The idea came from Bzdick’s desire to showcase the talent of his students and give them a chance to perform for an audience. “So I thought, what if I take a chance and put a showcase together of music that I have written and arranged and let some of my students perform it?” Bzdick said recently. “So that’s what I have done.” The program will be narrated by student Derek Martin who will give a brief description of each song, and the story of how and why each one came to be written.

One piece Bzdick wrote, “You and I” was created as he imaged the prayers and thoughts of a few of who were present at the manger at the time of Christ’s birth. Included in the program are many solos, duets and trios. “A Change of Face” is a short Christmas Operetta that tells the story of an elf, known at the North Pole Workshop for his incredible doll face paintings. Want to go? Tickets are $15 and are available at the studio located at 301C Village Avenue in Yorktown. Reservations can be made at 969-5522 or e-mail BzdickStudio@gmail.com

Fifty years of

Christmas

and going strong By Ann M. EďŹ metz

local spin It’s the holiday season every day at the Christmas Shop in Merchants Square. For the past fifty years, the family-owned and operated business has been providing area residents and visitors with a chance to purchase distinctive items that reflect the spirit of the holidays. Throughout the year, and especially as Christmas draws near, the store draws loyal local patrons and visitors who make the store a destination shop to find one-of-a-kind items. “One of the unique things now is that we still strive to have handmade American made, cottage d Cabell Wal industry-type items available,” said Walllace. “There are lace, son of store founder Sam Wallace. artisans from all over the United States and up and down the East Coast. That’s whatt we do different.” mWallace said the store carries imported items as well, but the main focus of the store is on handmade items from the U.S. and Europe. The store was originally conceptualized by Cabell’s grandmother, Elisabeth, who opened

the store in 1964 after traveling to California and seeing a Christmas shop there. “She told my father that they should start a Christmas store,” he said. From there, it was history. They have been in the same 500-sq.-ft shop since then. The store was amply big at that time because of the dearth of Christmas items available to be sold. Wallace admits how the business has changed in five decades. “It has really transformed, as everything has over 50 years,” Wallace said. “When it started it was hard to get a small shop full of Christmas items.” That That’ss in contrast to the myriad of choices availa available now. Despite the influx of holiday sto stores and items available, Wallace said the store and what is offered has a special nich niche. “In o our small shop, we try to keep it about Christmas. Some people like to get really decorated up, others have a simple tree and candle. Every year someone pulls out something they bought in Williamsburg and put it on the tree. I have sold 50 years of m memories to people all over the world. It is special to have that part of someone’s celebration of Christmas and what it means to them.” Wa Wallace said the top seller in the t iis llocally made by a woman who store creates them “with love.” It is an angel, handcrafted out of wood and cloth angel. It is our number one item. “I think about all those angels all around the world,” Wallace said. The intimate location is a draw, giving patrons the chance to have an experience not typically found. “Part of the charm of the store is its size, being so small, it is atypical situation,” he said. “People come in around the holidays with the hustle and bustle, and bumping around with other shoppers. It is part of the allure. Every time you turn around there is something else to see. It is cozy and there is something everywhere you turn.” Photos by Ann M. EÀmetz

head of the class

Michael Deitz By Ann M. EÀmetz Michael Deitz is a senior at the College of William and Mary who has been working for the past several years to bring attention to the growing problem of eating disorders among young people. Age: 21 years old Your year at W&M: A senior captain of the men’s gymnastics team.

How did you become involved with the National Eating Disorders Association? I have been an athlete my whole life and have been on teams with many different people. Through this experience I have encountered those who have experienced struggles with disordered eating and diagnosed eating disorders. I realized that this is an extremely big issue that does not get the attention it deserves. Why is it an important issue for you? There seems to be a stigma related to them that makes them taboo. Problems that are not addressed can never be cured, so I’ve gotten involved to do my part to raise awareness about eating disorders and help contribute to the wonderful efforts the National Eating Disorder Association puts forth. My teammate on the W&M gymnastics organized the 2012 NEDA Walk and I helped him with the fundraising and sponsorship. He graduated that year and asked if I would be willing to take over the whole walk the following year. I very willingly took him up on that offer and I was the director of the 2013 and 2014 Williamsburg NEDA Walks. What classes/training/workshops have you attended? This past summer, I was granted the opportunity to intern with NEDA in New York City. There, I was able work in the same office as the national walk coordinator to do research and promotion for the upcoming national walks including the NYC NEDA Walk. It was a very exciting and rewarding experience. I was able to also work with the media and communications manager at NEDA for the Annual NEDA Conference that was held in San Antonio. What do you hope your work at William and Mary can accomplish? I hope my work can help take the stigma away from eating disorders and have people recognize that it is a serious issue that needs much more attention. I have a great group of people that have been working with me on the walk this year who have agreed to continue running this walk even after I graduate. What are your future goals? My goals are to keep the W&M campus involved with NEDA and promoting the work they do so that this topic is given the attention it deserves. I am in full support of all the critical work done by NEDA and the volunteers and interns there, and I plan on keeping as much involvement with NEDA as I can for many years to come.

around town

“ The best job

in the world ” By Ann M. EÀmetz The exuberance Lance Smith feels for a period of several weeks during the holiday season sustains him through the rest of the year, always keeping him looking ahead. For the past seven years, Smith has donned the traditional red garb of Santa and Father Christmas to embody the quintessential holiday figure. People of every age and from every walk of life engage Smith as he traverses Merchants Square, spreading a message of cheer and hope. “Santa is an ambassador of love to the world,” Smith said in a recent interview. “I try to leave everyone with a smile or a laugh. It is a happy time of year. It is a love fest. It is as close to heaven as you can get without dying.” The work comes naturally to Smith, who has worked as a magician for years. A friend asked him if he was interested in working as Santa to entertain at holiday parties. That soon opened the door to the Merchants Square opportunity. During the weekends over the holiday season he spends mornings as Santa at Barnes & Noble. In the afternoon, he changes clothes and persona, becoming Father Christmas to stroll the square. At Barnes & Noble kids are invited to climb up on Santa’s sleigh and ask for their holiday wishes. Some kids approach with zeal, others with trepidation. “Children are afraid of Santa for the same reason they are afraid of clowns,” Smith said. “It’s because there is no skin showing. I try to engage the ones that are afraid so that they get to know me as a person and a friend. After that is established, I have them hop up. Usually the problem shifts in how to get them to leave,” he chuckled. Smith said he spends up to 15 minutes with each child, giving kids the chance to share

their wishes for the holiday and to ask Santa questions. “Santa used to be asked to name the reindeer,” Smith said. “Now thanks to Google, they ask about the first name of Mrs. Claus. They ask all sorts of questions.” Kids who seem to have it figured out get a snippet of Christmas wisdom from Smith. “I tell kids that they have it figured out all wrong and I tap my head,” he said. “I tell them that they don’t figure out who Santa is with your brain, you have to know who Santa is with your heart.” Requests from kids run the gamut from the most popular toys of the season to expensive gadgetry, including the latest smartphones or tablets. He once had a kid ask him for a pet dragon. “I told him it was a bad idea,” Smith said with a laugh. “Dragons eat reindeer.” Smith said he is careful not to promise a child any request, and often throws a wink to the waiting parent, who is grateful for his aplomb. Some requests are poignant. “I had one kid ask me for a warm coat,” Smith recalled. “That is the kind of thing that makes you sad. No child at Christmas asks for a warm coat.” The season comes and goes quickly, but Smith strives to leave a lasting memory with each child. “I am not afraid to the kids that I love them and that we are going to be friends for a very long time,” he said.

Holiday Homes on tour Dec. 6

By Ann M. EÀmetz The weekend of Grand Illumination is traditionally when the Green Spring Garden Club holds its annual Christmas Homes Tour. This year, the 55th annual event will be held 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 and will include homes bedecked with holiday decorations, created by club members. All the homes featured on this year’s tour are located in the Historic Area. The locations are the Red Lion and Blue Bell Taverns, Powell’s Kitchen, Alexander Craig House, John Crump House, Bruton Parish Rectory and the Ludwell Tenement. Tour publicity chair Christina Berry said all the houses will provide participants with a unique glimpse into the holiday season. One home on the tour, Alexander Craig House, is of particular note for its distinctive décor. “The interior of the Alexander Craig House is so authentically decorated, it is just spectacular,” Berry said recently. “It is an amazing house.”

Make Room for the Memories.

An adventure of historic proportion is waiting for you—at two living-history museums that explore America’s beginnings. Board replicas of colonial ships. Grind corn in a Powhatan Indian village. Try on English armor inside a palisaded fort. Then, join Continental Army soldiers at their encampment for a firsthand look at the Revolution’s end. Don’t forget your camera. Because the history here is life size. And your memories will be even bigger!

Save 20% with a combination ticket to both museums. 34

West Point Antiques features Victorian dresser By Ann M. EÀmetz A short drive up Interstate 64 can lead you to a veritable treasure trove of wonderful items for your home. West Point Antiques, owned by Bill and Juanita Cawley, features a variety of distinctive pieces including this month’s Great Find, a white marble top 19th century Victorian dresser. “We bought it at an auction in Richmond about two years ago,”

2011 • 2012 • 2013 • 2014

Bill Cawley said recently. “It is a classic Victorian dresser with the glove boxes and the candle shelves.” The three-drawer chest is also fitted with a tall swivel mirror and carved walnut pulls. “The marble is in great condition,” Cawley said. “It hits all the marks for a Victorian piece.” Cawley said he has seen similar pieces sell on the Internet for $1,200-$1,500. He has priced the piece for sale at his store at $950.

Positive results I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc. If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine. -Julia Carter, Owner Chickadees Fine Furniture, Antiques & Home Décor

HERE IS WHAT WE RECOMMEND YOU SEE!

December See & Do • A World Made Small – Throughout the season, elaborate dollhouses and antique children’s toys dating back as far as the early 19th Century are included in this new exhibit at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. Items on display include the Morris-Canby Rumford Dollhouse, made in 1820 for Philadelphia twins Elizabeth and Sarah Morris, and the 11-room, 15-foot Long Island Dollhouse, discovered in a demolition and acquired in 1969 from New York toy seller F.A.O. Schwartz. The exhibition also features assorted children’s toys from the period. Included with admission to the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, accessible via the Public Hospital of 1773 at Francis and South Henry streets. • Grand Illumination – In the 18th century, illuminations, which included the firing of guns and lighting of fireworks, were held to celebrate major events, such as great military victories, the anniversary of the reigning sovereign’s birth, or the arrival of a new colonial governor. Colonial Williamsburg’s holiday tradition includes the Revolutionary City adorned with natural decorations, musical performances on multiple stages and fireworks illuminate the sky from three locations. 4:45-7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 in the Historic Area. No admission charge. • Wine, Wit and Wisdom – Executive Chef Rhys Lewis presents “Italy from the Grape to the Glass,” an interactive, educational and fun wine tasting. The wines of Italy’s most celebrated wine regions are paired with products from local farmers and artisan food crafters. 2 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Dec. 20. $45.50. Reservations required. 855-296-6627. • Christmas Eve Ice Carving – Williamsburg Lodge pastry chefs and their elves demonstrate how they make gingerbread houses and carve ice sculptures. Mulled win, hot buttered rum and hot chocolate available for purchase by the fire in the Lodge lounge. 310 S. England St. 2-4 p.m. Dec. 24. No ticket required. • Community Tree Lighting – This festive annual event co-sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg begins with a special reading of “The Night before Christmas.” The story of the first Christmas tree’s appearance in the United States and singing of classic Christmas carols precede the illuminate of the giant evergreen tree on Market Square. 5:30 p.m. Dec. 24 at the Courthouse.

• The Farmers Table Christmas Eve – Selections from the a la carte gardento-guest menu of locally inspired cuisine include late harvest salads, signature soups, regional entrée selections from the open kitchen and a bountiful holiday dessert buffet. Traditions in the Williamsburg Lodge, 310 S. England St. Service begins at 5 p.m. Dec. 24. Reservations required. 855-296-6627. • Craft Beer and Holiday Cheer – Beer Barons Anthony Frank and Ken Clasen present some exceptional beers from Virginia breweries paired with products from local farmers and food crafters. 2- 4 p.m. Dec. 27. Williamsburg Lodge, 310 S. England St. $45.50 per person. Reservations required. 855-296-6627. Museum Programs (For a complete list, visit colonialwilliamsburg.com) • A Mother’s Difficult Choice – In 1789, a free black laundress and a white widow consider what the future holds. The war is over and the constitution ratified, but despite the establishment of a new government, promising liberty and freedom for all, these women from two distinctly different walks of life are focused on their families. In this interpretive program, Miriam and Betsy worry about the future their sons face as they navigate the apprenticeship system to learn a trade. One hour. 10:30 a.m. Dec. 4, 11, and 18; 11:30 a.m. Dec. 23 at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg’s Hennage Auditorium , accessible via the Public Hospital of 1773 at Francis and South Henry streets. A $5 program ticket is required in addition to museum admission. • Rum and Highland Tales – What made the Highlanders of Williamsburg wake up in the morning? What helped them through their day and into the night? Rum rations got them through the day and stories through the night. The winter nights are long: stories (and rum) around the fire make them bearable. Master storytellers Donna Wolf and Shel Browder share tales told by Highlanders of the 18th century. One hour. 1:30 p.m. Dec. 4, 11, and 18; 11:30 a.m. Dec. 22 and 30 at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg’s Hennage Auditorium, accessible via the Public Hospital of 1773 at Francis and South Henry streets. A $5 program ticket is required in addition to museum admission.

By Ann M. EÀmetz

In 2011 Sande Hubbard, owner of More than Just Beads in New Town embarked on a new life adventure, resulting in a decision to close her store. When her life’s path led her back to Williamsburg last June, she decided to start looking for a new location to open a similar place. Just so happened, circumstances fell together and Hubbard was able to move back to New Town into the spot formerly occupied by Retro Daddio’s, which has moved to Monticello Avenue. She opened in early fall under the new name, “The Beadtender.” Customers who had frequented the former store have steadily been finding her again. Photos by Ann M. EÀmetz “I am so glad to be back,” Hubbard said in a recent interview. “The beaders are all finding me again. The bead family is like a family.”

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2014

ds

The new store offers five times the size of the former store, and gives Hubbard the chance to offer a larger inventory, more classes, a variety of books and more display space. Before opening, she was able to purchase the inventory of Tada Beads on Richmond Road, which closed several months ago. Hubbard hopes to continue diversifying the events at the store as time goes on. This month, she plans a “Make & Take” workshop for fathers and daughters to create unique holiday gifts for mom. She also hopes to host regular “Ladies Nights Out,” giving women the chance to enjoy each other’s company while working on a beading project. There are even plans for future sewing classes. Hubbard enjoys the freedom that owning her own business affords her. However, the perk she feels most strongly about is the bond she

forges with those who frequent her store. She carefully chose the name, “Beadtender” to reflect a friendly place where people can come to be themselves. “Instead of being a bartender, I am a beadtender,” Hubbard explained. “People come in and tell me their stories. I put bar stools at the display case so that people can just sit and talk. Sometimes I am just an ear for people.” Hubbard said it is not uncommon for women to come to the store to make something or purchase something to boost their spirits. She is glad to help them find or create just the right thing. “You really can make someone feel better,” she said. She is enthusiastic about the new location and the ability to offer patrons more services and more chances to express their creativity. “I like this store more than the other store,” she said. “And I really like the logo I chose for the store as well. I think it looks classy. I just like it.”

Christmas Town continues at Busch Gardens By Ann M. EÀmetz Christmas Town, the hugely popular holiday spectacular at Busch Gardens, runs through the end of this month. It runs on selected days and offers locals and visitors with a singular experience. The park has been transformed into a glittering wonderland with millions of twinkling lights and special attractions. Since Christmas Town debuted in 2009, it has become a tradition among those who live here and those who visit. Like the popular Halloween themed experience of Howl-O-Scream, Christmas Town utilizes the back drop of the park to create a visual spectacle. Countries celebrate various aspects of the holiday experience. Some of the more visually spectacular attractions include the metamorphosis of Escape from Pompeii into a shimmering display of light. There are chances to experience the Christmas season of yesteryear with the fun attraction Holiday Hills in the Festa Italia.

New this year is the show, “Scrooge No More,” in the Globe Theatre. The all-new musical features the legendary character that learns the true meaning of Christmas thanks to the spirits who teach him the importance of family and friends. The musical joins other live shows, “Deck the Halls,” “Gloria” and “Miracles” that all share the message of the holiday season. Visit www.seaworldparks.com for hours, ticket information and further details.

Holiday chances to benefit Heritage Humane Society

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2014

There are many opportunities during the month of December to help Heritage Humane Society. Donations are always welcome. Society director of communications Michael Rhodes said the generosity of the community is heartfelt during this special time of year. “Much needed supplies stream in the door each and every day,” Rhodes said. “Adopters too, seem to peak at this time of year. It is very heartwarming to see families come together over the love of a pet.” Rhodes said families looking to adopt pets over the holiday season should take it slow, inte-

grating the pet into the household carefully. “A multitude of friends and family coming through the house can be stressful for a new pet that is trying to adjust to a new home, “he said. “We are always here to help and ensure that adoptions over the holidays (and all year long) are successful.” There are many special ways to help this month: The Fur Tree—It is located in Colonial Williamsburg next to Mermaid Books on Prince George Street. Pet lovers purchase a bow to don the tree with their pet’s name. All proceeds benefit the animals at Heritage Humane, but this is also a great tribute to personal pets, past and

present. Information at heritagehumanesociety.org. #GivingTuesday—In keeping with the popularity of events including Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, Heritage Humane is using Tuesday, Dec. 2 for a chance to remember the homeless pets in need on #GivingTuesday. The day of philanthropic giving is a celebration where community members can recognize the great work being done for animals by making a charitable gift online. The Christmas Bazaar— Bazaar has become a Williamsburg holiday tradition. It will be held 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13 at Bruton Parish Hall. The society auxiliary presents the unique day of shopping, with all the proceeds benefitting the pets at Heritage Humane Society. The event also features gourmet soups from 17 area restaurants, fresh baked goods, a wide assortment of handcrafted items, a high-end raffle and a silent auction. Santa’s Helpers—Much needed supplies include, bleach, laundry detergent, cat litter, canned pet food for dogs and cats, and 55-gallon construction grade trash bags. These supplies can be dropped off at the shelter any day of the week. For more information, visit www.heritagehumanesociety.org. Photo by Ann M. EÀmetz

whats cooking? Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon-Pecan Butter

Williamburg Inn

Ingredients

Ingredients

Signature Sweet Potato Pancakes

9 tablespoons (1 stick + 1Tbsp) unsalted butter, softened 1/2 cup firmly packed golden brown sugar 1/2 cup toasted pecan pieces 1 tablespoon Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon

2 large eggs 2 cups buttermilk 6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) unsalted butter, melted 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup sugar 2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1 small pinch ground nutmeg 1 small sweet potato, boiled, peeled, and mashed (about 1 1/2 cups)

Preparation 1. Place butter in medium bowl; toss to coat with brown sugar and stir until mixture thickens. 2. Stir in pecans and bourbon. Roll up into a log shape. Chill until set. yield: Serves 4

Preparation 1. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, and oil. 2. Stir in the dry mix and nutmeg until just combined. 3. Fold in the sweet potato. 4. If the batter seems too thick, add more buttermilk until it reaches the desired consistency (it should be thick but still pourable). 5. Place a large, greased griddle or pan over mediumhigh heat. Working in batches, spoon the batter onto it and cook until the surface of the pancake is covered with bubbles, 2 to 3 minutes. 6. Flip and cook the other side until golden, 1 to 2 minutes more. Serve it, topped with a slice of Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon-Pecan Butter and a little maple syrup.
