April in Williamsburg offers myriad chances to explore the outdoors, as flowers bloom, trees become greener, temperatures warm and spring begins. A perfect place to start is the 83rd annual Williamsburg Homes and Gardens Tour on April 26. With a theme of “Art and the Garden,” this year’s tour includes a stop at the Muscarelle Museum, a vintage car show and, of course, plenty of walking tours. Also outdoors and also including art, but minus the gardens, Art on the Square will celebrates its 53rd year on April 24. It’s a beloved community event, and this year will feature more than 170 exhibiting artists. Some other community staples are back in swing with the arrival of spring, such as Second Sundays, Art in the ‘Burg and the Williamsburg Farmers Market. For the chance to explore a little further beyond the realm of downtown Williamsburg, head over York River State Park, which offers more than 30 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails, as well as guided programs. If the park sounds appealing, be sure to check out the magazine’s list of the five best places to spend an hour outdoors, including Freedom Park and Bay County Kayaking. This month’s women in business feature takes a look at Beautiful Brows by Annie and the fascinating hair threading technique in which owner Annie Lin uses cotton threads to twist and remove hair. There’s always a new skill to learn, or topic to learn about, and this month’s magazine explores some of these lifelong learning options for area seniors, including the opportunity to audit classes at William and Mary. Nearby in Merchants Square, Fat Canary remains one of Williamsburg’s most celebrated restaurants. Its success comes from much more than just the menu, and chef Tom Power explains why. Lastly, check out Stick Stone & Bone, a unique shop that offers metaphysical, spiritual and healing products, such as crystals, gemstones, jewelry, incense, herbs and more. Perhaps the store, and its knowledgeable staff, can provide some form of personal rejuvenation to accompany the seasonal rejuvenation of spring.

WACGC presents “Aprons Tied to Memories” By Heather Bridges Remembering a bygone era, the Williamsburg Area Council of Garden Clubs presents “Aprons Tied to Memories,” a spring fundraiser on April 12. Colonial Heritage Garden Club member Gloria Nelson will present a program about the history of the apron and the garment’s ties to domestic life. As WACGC members model 36 vintage aprons, the program will examine women’s history from 1890 to 1980 through a variety

of apron styles – from utilitarian to festival, fashionable to silly. The apron types follow trends that mirror how women’s role in society changed over that time span. They also might bring to mind memories of mothers, grandmothers, holidays, family recipes and gettogethers. Doors to the Colonial Heritage Ballroom open at 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12. Once doors open, attendees have the chance to purchase opportunity tickets for a handmade apron or theme baskets.

S al’s Order two

In addition to the program, a June Cleaver and Harriet Nelson inspired lunch will follow. Colonial Heritage is located at 6500 Arthur Hills Drive. A portion of proceeds will sponsor the Williamsburg Area Council of Garden Club’s education programs, civic beautification projects and the annual Arbor Day Awards Ceremony. Tickets are $25, available through any club member. For more information, contact Rose Marie Crocco at 258-4629 or Susan Baer at 903-2681.

Art on the Square:

A beloved tradition By Heather Bridges At last year’s Art on the Square, some special visitors stopped by the Junior Woman’s Club booth. “We were so lucky last year to have some women stop by our booth who had been part of the show in its very early years,” said event co-chair Tori Otstot. The women shared stories of Art on the Square from its budding years, including the times when they hung artwork from chicken wire. “The fact that the show came from roots like this,” Otstot said, growing into a veritable Williamsburg tradition and a show that annually raises thousands of dollars for the community. Art on the Square returns to Merchants Square for its 53rd year on April 24, presented by the Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg. “The great thing about Art on the Square is it’s such a tradition in Williamsburg,” Otstot said. “People just love it so much.” This year, the show features nearly 170 regional artists. Most call Virginia home, but some come from other East Coast areas. Artists submitted work in a number of categories: ceramics, drawing, digital art, fiber, glass, graphics, jewelry, metal work, mixed media, painting, photography and wood. Artists selected for the show by a local jury will exhibit, explain and sell their art the day of the show. 22

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / APRIL 2016

The day of the show, there will be some music and food to accompany, but “it is primarily a show of artwork,” Otstot said. Each year, local artist Richard DePaul creates and donates an original painting to Art on the Square. Through sales of the painting’s reproductions and a raffle of the original, funds raised through DePaul’s painting contribute to a visual arts scholarship offered by the Junior Woman’s Club. The scholarship is available to Williamsburg students intending to study visual or performing arts in college. A large facet of Art on the Square is its community impact. Proceeds from artist booth fees fund arts donations throughout Greater Williamsburg by the Junior Woman’s Club. Otstot said the show usually raises upwards of

$20,000 for arts-related organizations and needs. The community responds in kind. “We are lucky that we have a community that is so supportive of what we’re doing,” Otstot said. “The day of the show, that’s really the theme,” she said. “That theme of support, that people are coming out to be a part of it.” For more information, visit williamsburgjuniors.org

York River State Park is alive with nature, history By Ryan McKinnon

With 2,531 acres of marsh, river shoreline and forests, York River State Park near Croaker in James City County has attractions for a wide array of outdoor enthusiasts -- birdwatchers, history buffs, hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians. The park, which is located on the south side of the York River about 10 miles downstream of West Point, has 40 miles of trails winding through marshy woodlands where muskrats, bald eagles and osprey can be spotted by visitors. The park is also home to its share of historical artifacts. The foundation of John Blair’s Taskinas Creek Plantation along with the remains of a slave quarters and a blacksmith shop provide a window into life in the 1700’s. And visitors are encouraged to look for the remains of snails, whale bones and fossilized barnacles on Fossil Beach. John Gresham, a park ranger with a booming

26

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / APRIL 2016

voice and a passion for nature, treks through the park with his walking staff most weekends, leading groups into the woods. On a recent Saturday, Gresham led a group down one of the park’s most popular trails, The Taskinas Creek Trail. The trail gives hikers an upclose look at the marshy wetlands bordering the confluence of the York River and Taskinas Creek. The age of the group ranged from 20's to retirees, and everyone made steady progress up and down the steep ravines, catching their breath as Gresham explained different aspects of the landscape. Gresham explained that, although all may appear calm on the surface of the York River, just beneath the surface worlds are colliding. The section of the York River bordering the park is an estuary, a place where saltwater and freshwater meet. The estuary creates a unique environment where

fishermen can catch both salt and freshwater fish, and muskrats and osprey can be spotted by hikers and birdwatchers, said Gresham. Several wooden platforms overlooking a broad expanse of marsh dot the trail. The Taskinas Creek winds a serpentine route through the marsh, home to blue heron, which can be quite noisy while mating, according to Gresham. “This is probably one of the few places where the general public can go into an estuarine marsh,” Gresham said. “You are pretty much up close and personal with the marsh itself.”

There are many options for keeping

the mind sharp, body active By Austin Bogues More and more, the Williamsburg area is becoming a place for retirees to call home. But that doesn’t mean folks are here to just enjoy the four square seasons a year and eat three square meals a day. The hunger for education and leisure activities that are learning-based is higher than ever. Luckily, there’s more than a few options available for continuing education and adventures. For the past few years, the James City County Recreation Center has offered what it calls Club 55 +, which offers a variety of programs offered towards the aging and active population in the county. The programs that we offer through The Lounge are targeted toward their interests.” But the programs at James City County are by far not the only opportunities available. Historic Garden Week to offer look at rarely seen area homes and gardens W&M, Colonial Williamsburg to show off gardens, expertise By Brandy Centolanza Natural and artistic colors collide during the 2016 Garden Club of Virginia’s Historic Garden Week, April 23-30. This year’s theme is “Art in the Garden.” The Williamsburg Garden Club and The College of William and Mary have partnered to sponsor speakers, tours, presentations, and other activities pertaining to Williamsburg’s leg of Historic Garden Week on April 26. Ticket holders will have the opportunity to admire the beauty of several homes, both interior 30

decor as well exterior gardens and landscaping. Tour headquarters this year will be The Cedars of Williamsburg Bed and Breakfast on Jamestown Road. The Colonial B&B’s gardens and gazebo as well as common rooms will be open to the public for the first time for Historic Garden Week. Other homes being showcased as part of this year’s tour include The Lindsey Home and Garden, and Bel-Mede, both on Burns Lane. “It’s been wonderful to work with our homeowners who generously open their homes and gardens to the public,” said Terry Buntrock, chairman

for Historic Garden Week. Jim and Pam Penny are owners of the historic home known as Bel-Mede, which was last open for Historic Garden Week in 1953. “This house does have a history on the tour, and we thought it would be a great thing to have it on the tour again,” said Jim Penny. The couple have owned BelMede since 2008 and recently completed a renovation. They are looking forward to showcasing their formal colonial garden situated in the front of the house as well as several antique ceramics, prints and other artwork inside. “This is exciting for us,” Jim Penny said. “We have some interesting things inside the house that I think people will really enjoy. In addition to the historic link to the house, this will be an opportunity to let people see what we’ve done to the inside of the house.” The College of William & Mary will also host a walking tour of the campus with stops at the Dodge pocket garden near Phi Beta Kappa Hall, the Swem Library sundial garden, and other sites. As the name suggest, Second Sunday Art and Music festival occurs the second Sunday of every month, save for January and February, offering a one-stop shop for all things art. With more than 75 artisans and four stages featuring live entertainment, each Second Sunday creates a hub of cultural activity and creativity. Williamsburg resident Shirley Vermillion started the festival in 2010 – it’s her passion project, a labor of love. The fun kicked off in March, but have no fear – the next festival is

Williamsburg Farmers Market Though the Williamsburg Farmers Market also presents artisans and live music in an open-air setting, its central focus is the nearly 40 regional vendors offering produce, prepared food and farm-related products. Since 2002, the farmers market has provided a space for customers to interact directly with the person behind the product – whether a farmer, baker, waterman or otherwise. Even more, as a “Virginia Grown” market, it offers only products grown or made within 100 miles.

The market is open 8 a.m.-12 p.m. every Saturday, from April through October. Free and open to the public, the market is located at 402 W. Duke of Gloucester Str., in Merchants Square. For more information, call 259-3768 or visit williamsburgfarmersmarket.com.

WILLIAMSBURG

Art in the ‘Burg After last year’s inaugural run, Art in the ‘Burg returns to its mission of bringing art into the Williamsburg Arts District. A small and lively festival, Art in the ‘Burg fills the parking lot of Colonial Folk Art Studio and Gallery, owned by Davie and Beverly Burgdorf, with artworks sold and exhibited by local and regional artists. Art in the ‘Burg provides a space for both professional and aspiring artists. Those who displayed during the 2015 series of festivals showcased the richness of local talent – from John Boelte, whose works include fish carved from recycled wood, to Pierrette Ghaly-Gyor’s custom-made viking knit necklaces. The first Art in the ‘Burg of 2016 is scheduled for 10 a.m.-4 p.m., April 16. The remaining fair dates in 2016 are as follows: May 14, June 18, July 16, Aug. 20, Sept. 17, Oct. 15 and Nov. 5. Colonial Folk Art is located at 110 Bacon Avenue. For more information, call 941-8926 or visit colonialfolkart. com or www.artintheburg.org.

Threading is a new, old way to remove unwanted facial hair By Brandy Centolanza Hair threading is popular in big cities like New York and Chicago, and now Annie Lin has brought the trend to Williamsburg. Lin opened Beautiful Brows by Annie in Monticello Shopping Center in the summer of 2013. The business specializes in eyebrow shaping and facial hair removal using a process called hair threading. Hair threading, which originated as an ancient art form in India and China, uses a special, thin, thread handmade from cotton or polyester that is doubled, then twisted, and rolled over areas of unwanted hair. Hair threading removes short lines of hair instead of plucking a single hair with tweezers; it is often less painful than waxing. The trend is gentler on the skin, more precise, cleaner, and lasts longer than tweezing or waxing. Lin, a native of China, started out in the restaurant business when she first moved to Williamsburg more 40

WILLIAMSBURG MAGAZINE / APRIL 2016

than a decade ago. She operated the Golden Leaf Restaurant, specializing in Chinese cuisine, on Richmond Road for several years before switching gears. Four years ago, Lin began training with a hair threading service in Newport News. She picked up the skill quickly and, wanting to be closer to home, decided to open up Beautiful Brows by Annie here in Williamsburg. “I like my job because I like serving people, and making them happy,” Lin said. Beautiful Brows by Annie offers services including eyebrow shaping, facial hair removal (eyebrows, lips, chin, sideburns or full face), hair threading, and sales of various eyebrow products. It is the only hair threading studio in Williamsburg, and locals as well as individuals from Newport News, Virginia Beach, Richmond and elsewhere frequent the business. Hair threading is a “positive, natural alternative to waxing, plucking or tweezing,” she said. The studio has a peaceful, comfortable atmosphere, and most people

utilize the hair threading services to feel more attractive and better about themselves. Most of her clientele are women, though Lin provides services to men. “It’s been amazing,” she said of the success of Beautiful Brows by Annie. Lin is the sole employee of the business and provides services to close to 30 guests daily. Some return weekly for hair removal, or monthly, depending on the service. Hair removal using threading lasts about three weeks. Lin’s busy time of year is the spring, around the start of graduation and prom season. There is also a jump in business around Christmas time. Lin credits her faith for the success of Beautiful Brows by Annie and hopes to be in business for years to come. “God gave me these skills,” Lin says. “He opened this door for me, and I trust in Him.”

Stick Stone and Bone By Heather Bridges Linda Curti pinched a clear, jagged quartz crystal between two fingers, as she explained its piezoelectric effect – essentially, when you squeeze a quartz crystal, it generates some electric current. Thus, the crystal is often associated with energy. At Stick Stone and Bone, “We have a broad knowledge of crystals and how they can be applied to healing modalities,” said Curti, co-owner of the boutique. There’s Tiger Eye, a smooth golden stone with stripes resembling earth strata. “A stone of strength, courage, optimism and creativity,” the description reads. Or there’s bloodstone, blue-green with flecks of red, which “draws forth your inner reserves of strength and courage to help assist you in times of stress and worry.” Stick Stone and Bone offers a wide range of crystals, gemstones, jewelry, incense, candles, Native American artifacts and more – “gifts to sooth body, 48

mind and soul,” Curti explained. It’s a place to ask questions and, hopefully, to find answers. “They’re uplifting spiritual products,” Curti said. “It’s fulfilling to be able to assist people on their journey.” The store was born out of the combined interests of two friends. Curti worked in the field of psychology, but had always nursed an interest in metaphysics. Yolanda Miller was a diamond grader, who harbored an interest in crystals. Together, they opened the original Stick Stone and Bone location in New York City in 1990. Eventually, Curti and Miller moved to Williamsburg, opening the second location in 2012. Since coming to Williamsburg, Curti said the store has tried to “act as a clearing house” for the local healing community. Still, the store’s main mission is “always to share information,” Curti said. “Educating people regarding the products that we sell.” From reiki-infused candles to sage smudge sticks to fossils and crystals from around the world, “we have many interesting, novel types of products,” Curti said. “Come and explore. It’s a fun place to be.” At Stick Stone and Bone, the goal is not to diagnose or treat conditions. Neither is the intent to convert anyone, Curti said. “We’ll answer questions, welcome people,” she said. “We like spending time with customers and interacting.” For example, if a customer came to the store suf-

fering from stress, Curti would recommend amethyst, a soothing stone. For someone who seeks to feel grounded, Curti might suggest the use of garnet. “This is an ancient art,” Curti said. “Every culture in the world has used crystals.”

Tom Power of Fat Canary: In pursuit of excellence By Heather Bridges In everything, Tom Power Jr. strives to do his best. It’s a simple motivator, but one that he finds is often overlooked. “There’s, I think, a fair amount of mediocrity in the world, and restaurants are no exception to that,” said Power.

But, as executive chef, Power works each day to make Fat Canary an exception. Since 2003, the award-winning restaurant has been recognized locally, and nationally, for its excellence. His exposure to restaurants started early. Power’s parents, Thomas and Mary Ellen, opened The Cheese Shop in the 1970s. They also helped establish The Trellis Restaurant in 1980. continued on page 52

“I kind of grew up in the restaurant there and The Cheese Shop,” Power said. When Power left Williamsburg to attend the Culinary Institute of America, he had no plans to return. The next nearly 20 years would take him on quite a journey. There was six months spent as an apprentice at Commanders Palace in New Orleans, where Emeril Lagasse worked as chef. Power spent some years in California working for The Ritz-Carlton. He cooked in Hawaii for a time, before moving back to the East Coast and working at restaurants in North Carolina. When his family expanded The Cheese Shop in 2003, to include Fat Canary, Power returned home. He’s operated the business with his parents and sisters Cathy and Mary Ellen ever since. Power described Fat Canary’s menu as a mash-up influenced by the varied chefs and cultures that shaped his career. Hearty creole foods of New Orleans, Asian influences from Hawaiian culture, the Southern-style foods closer to home, and everything in between.

Currently, entrees on the menu range from pan seared sea scallops to braised lamb shank. “It all comes from what I’m good at, and that comes from what I’ve done,” he said. continued from page 54

Make Room for the Memories. An adventure of historic proportion is waiting for you—at two living-history museums that explore America’s beginnings. Board replicas of colonial ships. Grind corn in a Powhatan Indian village. Try on English armor inside a palisaded fort. Then, join Continental Army soldiers at their encampment for a firsthand look at the Revolution’s end. The history here is life size. And your memories will be even bigger! Save 20% with a combination ticket to both museums.

But, in Power’s eyes, it’s not so much the items on the menu as their execution. Food that’s hot, fresh, sound in both seasoning and texture. A focus on the basics. It all traces back to the way Power lives his life, striving for excellence. “The reward really is more in the sense that you’re doing some-

thing that is … your best,” he said. “The byproduct is that people like it.” Power’s vision was shaped long before the restaurant opened – maybe before he even realized it was being shaped. From his time growing up in The Trellis, continuing through his education and career, Power said he’s always worked with “passionate, honest, motivated people, who inspired not just the cooking component.” He still does. In everything, the Fat Canary staff works to make the restaurant experience one that is excellent down to the basics, the often-overlooked details. “The success I think is hinged on a really basic concept of being engaged,” he said. “An authentic effort at doing things with genuine

care. And, not being snooty, but having a refinement that, again, is genuine but warm is the key.” For more information, visit fatcanarywilliamsburg.com.

Positive results I cannot say enough good things about the effectiveness of advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine. This magazine is distributed so widely, via the newspaper, at businesses all over town, at rest stops, etc. If you are not advertising in the Williamsburg Magazine, you are missing a very crucial opportunity to reach those who visit and live in this community! The rates are very reasonable for what is offered and it is truly the most bang for your buck! I would drop every other advertisement I run before I would drop the Magazine.
