10th anniversary for Williamsburg Botanical Garden %\ $QQ 0 (À PHW]
This July the Williamsburg Botanical Garden, located in Freedom Park off Centerville Road, will celebrate its 10-year anniversary. Interest in the garden continues and programs have been added to challenge, entertain and educate people of all ages. More programming has been added this year to help mark the decade of growth. In addition to the Learn and Grow Series, and the special children’s programming, area artist Linda Miller has introduced a new series of adult art classes using the garden as a backdrop. Introduction to Botanical Painting is scheduled for April 25 and Children’s Botanical Sketching will be held May 9. Here are the programs scheduled through the next few months. Nancy Barnhart and a team of Certified Master Naturalists will present a program about bluebirds and how to attract them to your garden. May 16—Water Wise Gardening. April brings warmer temperatures, blooming flowers and trees and transforms Williamsburg into a veritable springtime delight. This issue of the Williamsburg Magazine, there are several features that celebrate the awakening world around us, including a look at area gardens not to miss during spring, the Daffodil Festival in Gloucester, and area Easter Egg hunts for the kiddies. The Easter multi-media extravaganza “The Living Passover” returns this year to CrossWalk Community Church in Norge. The production depicts the last days of Christ in music, dance and special effects. You can visit the event website or the church for more information. Unfortunately, when area flowers bloom, so do area allergies. Springtime offers a bevy of challenges for those who are sensitive to pollen from trees and grasses. Our Local Spins this month highlight The Precious Gem, owned by Reggie and Lisa Akdogan, is located in Merchants Square. It is the place to visit for exquisite jewelry for any occasion that is sure to become an heirloom. The Coffeehouse in Williamsburg Crossing offers locals and visitors with a warm, friendly place to purchase a beverage, light meal or to enjoy the ambiance of a homelike atmosphere. Meet owners Adrienne and Charles Benbow in the article. Or better yet, stop by and meet them. There are many opportunities to get outside and enjoy the spring. On Saturdays, visit the Williamsburg Farmers Market in Merchants Square or travel down the lovely Colonial Parkway to Yorktown Market Days. (Dogwoods peak during April along the Parkway!) If you are in the mood for a physical challenge, you may want to visit the Lawn Bowling Green in the back of the Williamsburg Inn and learn about this interesting, historical game. At the conclusion of the month, the Junior Woman’s Club will present its annual “Art on the Square” art show. This event has been growing steadily over the years and showcases truly unique art created by local, regional and national artists. On any given day you may find William and Mary philosophy professor Josh Gert working on his laptop, sitting at a table in the Coffeehouse in Williamsburg Crossing Shopping Center. Gert frequents the cafe for a soothing cup of coffee, but also for its ambiance. “This is the best place to work,” Gert said in a recent interview at the restaurant. “It always has an inviting background bubble of noise.” Regulars, visitors and locals frequent the Coffeehouse to find freshly brewed coffee in a variety of flavors, soups and sandwiches, ideal for a light meal or snack. For Adrienne and Charles Benbow, creating the welcoming atmosphere is as important as the warm beverages and food they serve. “We love talking with the people,” Adrienne Benbow said. “We like to get to know them. It’s like
Cheers. People say they like coming here because they feel like family.” “The customers are fantastic,” added Charles Benbow. “They have welcomed us with open arms. We could not have asked for better.” Judy Zwelling, who often stops by the Coffeehouse, concurred. “They are so friendly and gracious,” Zwelling said. “It is a great place to come and relax. I have been coming here since it first opened. It is a comfortable, relaxing place to come and de-stress.” Breads are baked fresh daily at the Coffeehouse. They become the basis for some delicious sandwiches running the gamut from turkey and ham to roast beef and apple mango chicken salad. Fresh quiche is also made daily. Soup is also popular. “Some people come in just for the soup, especially when it is cold outside,” Adrienne said. “And a lot of people like our pastries.” During the summer, one of the specialties of the house is a Mocha Chai Shake. It is a cooling treat, that like hot chocolate in the winter, is or-
dered dozens of times a day. The Benbows credit their successful business to their staff. Some of them have years of service and are invaluable to the couple. “No matter how much business sense you have, if you don’t have the right people around you, then it doesn’t work,” Charles said. “We have a great staff. We have the right people and we can’t do it without them.” Caren Sexton has been working at the Coffeehouse for years, and can’t see herself anywhere else. “Charles and Adrienne are amazing people,” Sexton said. “And I am pretty crazy about the customers too.”

‘The Living Passover’ returns %\ $QQ 0 (À PHW]
“The Living Passover,” an Easter extravaganza of music and pageantry, produced by CrossWalk Community Church returns this year for a series of performances beginning March 28 at the church located in Norge. According to director Greg Ashley, the production returns with new zeal after a hiatus last year. It is the seventh season for the multi-media theatrical extravaganza. “We have come back bigger
and stronger,” Ashley said in a recent telephone interview. “It has new music, new costuming and sets and the cast is the largest it has ever been.” Scott Venable, who has played Jesus for several years, will return in the role of Jesus. Ashley said there are 130 people of all ages and denominations who are part of the cast. Another 250 people from various area faith communities will volunteer. “It is becoming a community expression of faith, which has always been one of my
heart’s desires,” Ashley said. “It is great when people from all faiths can come together.” In addition to the story of the death and resurrection of Jesus, Ashley has woven another theme that resonates through the production. “The underlying story is about the restoration of families and the healing within families,” Ashley said. He hopes “The Living Passover” will enhance the experience of Holy Week. “It provides a great finishing touch to the Holy Week experience,” he said. Want to go? Da Vinci exhibit closes this month Thousands of people have flocked to the Muscarelle Museum of art to see “Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty.” The exhibit features about 30 of the master’s works, including a self-portrait at age 53 that has never previously been exhibited in an exhibit continuing this month at the Muscarelle Museum. Time is short to take in the exhibit. It closes Sunday, April 5. The exhibit has been offered through the Muscarelle’s continued partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Following the exhibit’s closing, it will travel to Massachusetts for

There are many gardens around town ideal for exploring during April. This month, area flowers are in full bloom and several places throughout town can accommodate a leisurely stroll to enjoy all nature has to offer. Here are a few suggestions for outings that are sure to put a spring in your step: Williamsburg Botanical Garden—The garden is located in Freedom Park off Centerville Road. It provides people of all ages with a chance to see several native plants, flowers, trees in bloom, often attracting colorful butterflies. Boundary Street. According to the W&M website, the garden’s design “follows the spirit of eighteenth-century English landscape gardens, which abandoned the geometric parterres of Europe in favor of sweeping lawns intended to uplift the spirit by leading the eye toward a distant, natural setting.” The garden is host to various events and provides students and visitors with a picturesque vista and lovely walk. www.wm.edu.

Daffodil Festival blooms in Gloucester The 29th Annual Daffodil Festival will be held 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday April 11 and noon-5 p.m., Sunday, April 12 on Main Street in Gloucester. The two-day festival is sponsored by the Daffodil Festival Council in co-operation with the Gloucester Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department. The event is fun for the whole family. One of the most popular events is the annual parade. It will be held rain or shine Saturday, April 11 to kick off the event. The event includes crowning of the Daffodil Queen, which for the first time this year will include crowning of a Daffodil Queen Court, Wesolowski said. Also new this year will be the chance for those who attend, to purchase limited edition prints of the festival poster, she added. The festival also includes a food court and 200 vendors selling distinctive artwork, gifts and more. “We are known for jewelry people don’t see anywhere else,” said Lisa Akdogan, who with her husband, Reggie own and operate The Precious Gem in Merchants Square. “And we offer jewelry with the world’s finest gem stones.” Reggie Akdogan, who designs much of the jewelry sold in the store, travels the world to find the most exquisite stones. Customers can purchase pieces from the showcases, or they can have something truly unique created. “I would say 20 percent of our business is custom designs for people,” Akdogan said. “Sometimes they want a new piece made, other times, they bring in older pieces they no longer wear to be turned into a new design.” “I love creating,” Reggie Akdogan said. “I like new ideas.” Reggie admits he frequently sketches ideas for new pieces on scraps of paper or napkins. He later returns to his workshop to put the idea into reality. “I am always working on ten or twenty pieces at a time,” he said. According to Lisa, the store has been located in Merchants Square since 2000. Prior to that move, the store was located on Prince George Street. When it first opened, it was located in the Village Shops at Kingsmill. “It is wonderful to be on Duke of Gloucester Street,” she said. “We get to see the range of people who come to Williamsburg to visit. We have customers who come into the store from all over the country.” Lisa Akdogan said one of the most pieces purchased in the store are the classic three-stone rings in either 18-carat gold or platinum. Stones can vary from fine rubies or emeralds to diamonds.
“Rings like that tend to be purchased by couples who have been married for 10 or 20 years,” Lisa Akdogan said. “They are looking for a piece to celebrate life.” Even College of William and Mary students have frequented the store, looking to find a special piece. “Sometimes a young man will come in who wants to buy his girlfriend a piece of jewelry,” she said. “Even if there isn’t something in the case, we will find something that is in his budget.” There are plans to expand the store’s selection of estate jewelry, and appraisals to help people find the origin and worth of pieces. “A lot of times people inherit jewelry and don’t know anything about it,” Lisa Akdogan said. “They may know if they want to wear it or not, but don’t know much else about it.” Those who come into the store can be assured of the highest level of customer service. “People. People. People,” Lisa Akdogan said. “Working with our customers and seeing how happy they are when they leave with something they love—that’s what we enjoy most.”

The Heritage Humane Society on Waller Mill Road sees an influx in the amount of kittens up for adoption during the spring season. The Humane Society of America offers advice about kitten season, which is explained on their website, humanesociety.org. You may not know that “kitten season,” starts in spring, peaks in the late spring and ends in the fall— spanning several months. Here are suggestions about kittens and cats from the Humane Society: 1. Spay or neuter cats— Cats can become pregnant as young as five months. 2. Help our local shelter during kitten season—Heritage Humane Society is always in need of supplies for cats and dogs. Visit www. heritagehumanesociety.org. 3. Care for homeless or feral cats—Find out what you can do to help manage local feral and stray cat populations. 4. This concert of traditional Cape Breton Scottish fiddling and piping features Andrea Beaton and Dick Hensold on fiddle and pipe and Troy MacGillivray on piano. The fiddle and bagpipes have had a long, close relationship in the Scottish Gaelic communities dating to at least the 18th-century. Program helps seniors age in place %\ $QQ 0 (À PHW]
A few years ago, a study, “Aging in Place: A State Survey of Livability Policies and Practices” was written by the National Conference of State Legislatures and the AARP Public Policy Institute. The report found that nearly 90 percent of people over age 65 wanted to remain in their
homes for as long as possible. It also found that 80 percent of the people believed that their present home would be where they would always live. In order for those wishes to become reality, programs that enable seniors to live safely so that they can “age in place,” are needed. Locally, because Williamsburg is a retirement destination, the importance of having resources in place is imperative. It’s estimated that by 2030, approximately 30 percent of greater Williamsburg’s population will be over 65. To meet the demands of what’s been deemed the “silver tsunami,” programs have been developed, including “ChooseHome,” which represents a partnership between Williamsburg Landing and Riverside. At its crux, the program provides services to older adults who want to remain in their homes while still having the benefits of continuing care services. By bringing together all the services needed to age in place safely, it allows seniors to remain in their homes regardless of their long term care needs. “If you ask the average person who is 65 or older what their long term care plan is, they don’t know,” said Kathy Kammer, senior director of community relations for Williamsburg Landing. “That is the crux of the matter. 59 percent of them think their plan is to depend on the help continued on page 46

Historic celebration
for Garden Week The annual Historic Garden Week tour, sponsored by the Williamsburg Garden Club, will celebrate the rich 300-year history of Bruton Parish Church. The Williamsburg Homes and Gardens Tour is scheduled 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday, April 21. Tour ticket price is $50 and is available at www. vagardenweek.org. The theme of the celebration is “Love is in the Air,” and the properties on the tour will reflect a wedding theme. For the event, Bruton Parish church will be decorated with resplendent wedding flowers. Flower arrangements at all tour properties and gardens will celebrate wedding events including the engagement party, the bridesmaid luncheon, the bachelor party, the wedding trip and the renewal of vows. The House Key Antiques & Interior Design, recently opened on Merrimac Trail, owned by Susie Hightower. The store features an eclectic mix of antiques and decorative items and artwork. One of the more fascinating articles in the store is a large bronze sculpture of three Russian men on a horse-drawn carriage. The item was acquired from a local man who was downsizing his home. The sculpture, which according to Hightower is dated 1880-1920, depicts the three men, who appear to be out for a “night on the town.” “This would appeal to someone who likes horses, or the history of Russia,” Hightower said. “There are so many collectors of bronze. This would be very nice in a man’s study.” The price of the object is approximately $2,800.

The lawn bowling green located in the back of the Williamsburg Inn is home to the Williamsburg Lawn Bowling Club. Members regularly participate in competitions and demonstrate the sport to Colonial Williamsburg guests and the general public. The sport has a long and colorful history, with early documentation of it played here in the early 1700s. The local green was constructed in the late1960s and has been the home to local bowlers since. The green is open every day, 3-6 p.m., April 1-Oct 31. Each day a member of the club serves as a green keeper, helping anyone interested in trying the game. Free lessons are given on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Easter hops in this month Easter Sunday is April 5. The season is celebrated at several area churches with special services and egg hunts for the kids. The traditional sunrise service at Jamestown Island will be held at 7 a.m. The wellattended service is open to everyone and is non-denominational.
There are several area churches and organizations that hold Easter Egg hunts for area children. Among them are is the Annual Easter Egg Hunt on the Green at Walsingham Academy, March 28 at 9 a.m.; James City County Department of Parks and Recreation, Saturday, April 4 9:30 a.m. at
