Carving Process

The initial design phase involved critically analyzing our GAN outputs, looking for any clear persistencies in the geometry. We then took those cubes, stretched and cage-edited them, and this process resulted in a number of variations and we chose figures that generated movement in the design and represented our persistencies, as shown below, well.

In response to the Together Farm Project, a sustainable community farm in Cambodia, needing to expand their amenities for the nonprofit, our class was tasked with putting together a proposal for a visitor’s center , distribution center, education center, and dormitory for their volunteers. Our goals for the project included cultural relevance, functional convenience, and modularity for ease of additions as the program grows overtime. N

HERZOG SHADOWBOX

PROFESSOR: JULIE ROGERS ; FALL 2021, 1ST YEAR STUDIO

Inspired by Ginny Herzog’s “Architectural Illusion 10-204”, this shadowbox is made entirely by hand using wood and plexiglass to highlight her use of square figures swept in a diagonal motion in the painting. Using the grain and color of wood, the visual inertia is accentuated toards the black plexiglass fixture in the top right, much like the painting points toward its top right corner. While these pieces recreated this movement, they transformed from the original painting by using changes in elevation and contrast between the materials. This shadowbox exemplifies the movement in the original piece, all to guide the viewers focus toward the focal point.
