100% of the senior class at kipp dc college preparatory has been accepted to college Four years ago, KIPP DC opened up its first high school, KIPP DC College Preparatory (KCP), with the hopes of seeing KIPPsters to and through college. Today, we are incredibly proud to report that 100% of KIPP DC College Preparatory’s senior class has been accepted to college! KCP’s founding class has been accepted to over 150 different colleges and has earned more than two million dollars in college scholarships. With students selected for the Gates Millennium Scholarship, the POSSE Scholars program, and as Presidential Scholars and Deans Scholars at colleges across the country, KIPP DC College Preparatory has set a high bar for future graduates. “The founding class at KIPP DC College Preparatory has proven what we always knew was possible,” said KIPP DC President and COO Allison Fansler. “With hard work, high expectations, and a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, our students are ready to make their way not just to, but through college. We are excited for this next chapter of their journey.” As one senior, Jenny Jones, explains, “I feel as though KIPP DC has helped me to believe and know that I really can do whatever I set my mind to do. I don’t know if it’s a confidence thing or if it is just feeling it in your gut that this really can happen, but I know that I can do whatever I set my mind to do. I am going to college.” Jenny is currently deciding between Dartmouth College, Davidson College, and Tulane University. We could not be more excited for our founding class at KCP.
mathematica report confirms that kipp middle schools have a significant impact on student achievement In late February, Mathematica released its second report on the impact of KIPP schools. It is the most rigorous, comprehensive study of any charter school network in the country to date. Their research methodology took great care in addressing some of the common misconceptions about the source of KIPP’s success, including the role that parental involvement plays, the idea that we select or “cream” the best students, and the idea that our schools simply “teach to the test” in math and reading. KIPP DC middle schools (KEY, AIM, and WILL) played important roles in the study’s match comparison component and lottery sample experimental design. A combined 21 years of our student achievement results in math, reading, and science were used in the research. The findings make it clear that KIPP middle schools have positive and statistically significant impacts on student achievement. On average, over three years at KIPP schools, students make: 11 months of additional learning growth in math; 8 months of additional learning growth in reading; 14 months of additional learning growth in science; and 11 months of additional learning growth in social studies. This third party research confirms what KIPP DC has known for more than twelve years -that hard-working teachers and students can redefine what is possible and set a new standard for success.
