OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

FOR SIXTH FORM AND FE STUDENTS

Along with organisations up and down the country, we are adapting to the challenges presented by the coronavirus crisis. We are working to reassure everyone at LJMU about the measures we have put in place to protect and support all of our staff and students, as well as offering specific support and help to anyone who may feel particularly vulnerable or concerned.

Our campuses have been adapted to ensure they are safe. We have measures in place to control the flow of people around our buildings and deal with the large numbers of students and staff that make our university so friendly and lively.

For further information, please visit our dedicated microsite: ljmu.ac.uk/movingforward

Here you will find a wide range of resources to help you see how we plan to move forward. Although much of our guidance will apply to everyone, we have some specific advice for students. We will keep this information regularly updated, especially if Government guidance changes.

INSPIRING PUPILS TO PROGRESS TO UNIVERSITY

Take advantage of our engaging programmes for schools and colleges

At LJMU we encourage the progression to higher education for anyone who wants to access it, regardless of background or social status. As one of the university’s key values, providing transformational opportunities for all communities is at the heart of our outreach programmes.

Working closely with teachers, career advisors, pupils, parents and communities across the UK, our aim is to inspire individuals to pursue a university education. By supporting the decisionmaking and application journey, our outreach programmes help prospective students make an informed choice about their

future. Involving our student advocates in activities ensures that participants are given an authentic and informed perspective. We not only provide expertise, advice and guidance but also opportunities for prospective students to ‘try out’ higher education with programmes such as subject taster sessions, student shadowing and free summer residentials.

THE LJMU

EXPERIENCE

Discover what LJMU and the fantastic city of Liverpool have to offer as a destination of choice. Our activities really give students a sense of what it’s like to study at Liverpool John Moores University.

The one thing I love about LJMU is the massive support the university offers. I came to Liverpool not knowing anyone, yet I was struck by how comfortable I felt from the very beginning. Three years on and I am still shocked at how quickly Liverpool became like a second home to me.

The importance of the Gatsby Benchmarks are highlighted in The Good Career Guidance Report, published in January 2018. These eight benchmarks highlight what areas schools and colleges are expected to follow to build a strong careers plan.

Most people associate benchmark 7 (encounters with further and higher education) as the only benchmark relating to universities. All students by the age of 16 should have had one encounter with higher education and by the age of 18 at least two encounters. Our outreach activities incorporate as many of the benchmarks as possible, to support students and careers teams. Each of our activities in this guide show which benchmark they match.

These activities can be delivered at your school/ college in person or as a virtual event, or here at Liverpool John Moores and can be tailored to your students’ needs.

It breaks down the decision-making process into different support areas. It starts with considering the benefits of university, researching courses and careers then leads on to explaining the UCAS process itself and how to make an application as competitive as possible. Each section has helpful links and activities to support your students every step of the way

LJMU FOR ALL

LJMU are committed to supporting those under-represented in Higher Education and actively seeks to work with young people from low socio-economic backgrounds, pupils from specific ethnic backgrounds who are under-represented in Higher Education, disabled young people and young adult carers. In respect to progression to Higher Education, one of the largest underrepresented groups is looked after children and care leavers.

The Outreach Team deliver a series of activities each year designed to support young people who have spent time in or are currently in local authority care. One of our largest events is held during National Care Leavers Week, where young people aged 13-17 who have the potential to achieve and enter HE are welcomed on campus to experience a whole host of HE-related activities.

Now in its fourth year, LJMU host an innovative two day summer residential for Year 10 students in local authority care. This is a great opportunity for young people to experience life at LJMU, have hands on taster sessions and hear first-hand about the support that is available to them at LJMU.

In addition to the above, we offer one-to-one mentoring and bespoke visits to those who are care experienced and may feel more comfortable meeting on a one-to-one basis.

The success of these initiatives is reliant on close partnership with local schools/colleges and the surrounding local authorities who provide essential expertise in regards to the needs of individuals.

University

MATURE STUDENTS

Liverpool John Moores University has a rich tradition of welcoming mature students. We are always keen to support those returning to education and offer a range of interventions for 21+ students. We have opportunities for students to visit our drop ins to discuss accommodation, receive expert funding advice and pick up tips for UCAS applications. We also have current mature students at the drop ins to answer any questions on the student experience at LJMU.

Our monthly online chats allow mature enquirers to have questions answered by LJMU staff and students without having to visit the university. Enquirers can speak to other prospective mature students in a group chat or speak one-to-one with staff or current students.

In addition our team are happy to speak to adult learners in FE colleges, community centres or elsewhere, offering bespoke workshops or talks for students on site in areas such as:

As a result, we are planning to take an active blended approach to our academic delivery, with a mixture of online and face-toface teaching to adapt to the restrictions of social distancing whilst these are in place. These restrictions or changes to them may result in parts of an academic programme such as field trips, projects, placements, teaching and assessments that are referenced in this brochure being delivered in a different way (such as teaching and assessments) or not being provided (for example field trips, placements).
