WHY DID YOU CHOOSE LJMU?

WHAT OUR STUDENTS THINK

Alejandra Cardona Mayorga from Colombia decided to take the next step in her studies for her Masters in Film at Liverpool John Moores University. Hear what she has to say about her experiences studying at LJMU and in Liverpool…

I love the wide variety of study spaces available, which are suitable for what you want and need to do. My personal favourite place is the Student Life Building, as it has so much natural light, and very open spaces to work and study. The fact that it is also open 24/7, has helped to make me feel like there is always someone available to help you, which is a nice feeling as an international student!

Liverpool is a very easy-going city! And everything is very close to the university. If you live in the city centre, you will be able to find lots to do, including visiting the museums, walking through the Docks, enjoying some student budget-friendly meals along Bold Street, and of course, exploring some historic places where the Beatles made their first steps in the music world. Here in Liverpool, you are going to feel inspired!

DO YOU FEEL SUPPORTED BY THE UNIVERSITY AS AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT?

I chose LJMU because the university offered the postgraduate programme that I was particularly looking for and was excited to study. After reviewing many universities in the UK, finding this programme was great and so I knew LJMU was for me from Especiallythere. as the course included the module in Exploring Film Festivals, Distribution and Exhibition, which has since fulfilled my expectations about the film industry and confirmed what I should expect from a career in this field.

Liverpool John Moores University | 17

Do not panic if the English that you learnt in your home country sounds very different when you first arrive here. There are slang words, various English expressions, and also the intonation of the words can be difficult to comprehend for the first couple of months. However, with time and patience, you will begin to understand and then be able to express yourself in a very confident way, in English.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVERPOOL?

I have always received academic and emotional support at LJMU. All my lecturers have been very kind and have helped to guide me through to make the most of my postgraduate course. They, combined with the well-being, careers, and academic skills achievement teams, have made me feel very supported and capable in setting my own personal and academic goals.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE LJMU?

WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANYONE LOOKING TO STUDY IN THE UK?

Samina Tahir from Pakistan decided to take the next step in her studies for her Master’s in Digital Marketing (with Advanced Practice) at Liverpool John Moores University. Hear what she has to say about her experiences studying at LJMU and in Liverpool…

You should have a specific goal when you are planning to study in the UK. If you know what your goal is, you can keep an eye on all the available resources that will help you to reach this goal including studying in the UK. The UK is a land of opportunities and if you are proactive and ask for help, you will be able to study successfully to then get a relevant job.

The Skills department have also been a great help when learning about new things like SPSS, referencing and more.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS THINK

DO YOU FEEL SUPPORTED BY THE UNIVERSITY AS AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT?

The main reason I chose LJMU was the course outline and subjects taught, which covered both theory based learning and practical implementation. I believed this would help one to understand in a comprehensive manner, the skills which are now much needed in the digital marketing field.

For the last 15 years or so, when working in the professional environment, digital marketing is something you cannot avoid. Especially, if you intend to sell financial products and services. This was my foundation of where I wanted to develop more understanding of this field. As such, I decided to take a break from my work and come to learn about digital marketing, which will help me move forward in my career. Digital marketing in this era helps one to grow better in their respective career, and once I am finished with my studies, I expect the same. Especially, in Pakistan (my home country) where there is a big focus on digital marketing.

It wouldn’t have been possible to focus on my studies and career at the same time, without the support I get from my teachers, fellow students, and the people behind Career Zone. Initially the anxiety of restarting the student life and moving country looked like a hard task, but the wellbeing advisors and my teachers made it all feel easy. I am really thankful to these teachers for making me feel comfortable during this whole process.

As an international student, I did not have much understanding on how to make my CV presentable and what a cover letter is etc. The staff at Career Zone really helped me with these tasks.

Last but not least, UNITEMPS have been a great support in terms of helping me to get part time work. They have helped me to get a real feel of working in the professional environment alongside my studies.

Kassy Gavilanez, MPharm Pharmacy student from Canada I chose LJMU because of the great reputation the MPharm Pharmacy programme has. This as well as the fact that the campus is located very near to the city centre. When choosing a university, it was important for me to have a city feel environment combined with a quality education. The Pharmacy course at LJMU would further allow me to work closely with patients as well as other health care professionals, which is now that I am here, a great aspect of my course! There is a great amount of support as an international student at LJMU. If you are ever suffering with any type of issue, you can reach out to a truly amazing team. Financial advice, wellbeing, and skill workshops are available for students at LJMU, which are extremely helpful and informative. I was also able to gain employment with the international recruitment team through the employment service, Unitemps as part of the Auniversity.tipIwould give to any student planning to study in the UK is to take every opportunity that comes your way. It is important to keep an open mind and experience everything you can, and open doors for your future career.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS THINK

Amos Gavi, MSc Public Health student from Zimbabwe LJMU appealed to me immediately after making the decision to pursue Public Health as my preferred field of Liverpoolstudy.isa great, multicultural city with an abundance of cultural entertainment sites that appealed to me. The university also had a great reputation in public health research that influenced my decision to come here. I have enjoyed the opportunity to get involved with LJMU’s work in substance abuse and violence prevention research as these are emerging issues in my home country that are yet to be addressed. My learning is bringing me great benefit for a career path following my graduation to improve current policy and strategies around this field in my home country. The university has gone out of its way to create an ideal learning and living environment for international students. There are a diverse range of academic support services available that have helped me immensely during my studies – from improving my language skills to my critical and academic writing skills. This support from staff is great and they are always trying to bring out the best in us students. Choosing LJMU was definitely the best decision I have made, and I would say to anyone considering study in the UK, that it is a great option! If you have prepared and believe your studies will bring you benefit, take the opportunity as it comes.

Olubusayo Faleye, MSc Forensic Bioscience student from Nigeria When I compared my programme modules with those in other universities in the UK, I realised that LJMU would give me the edge over these others with the same programme. I also loved that it was located in the city of Liverpool, which has everything I need as an international student. I feel very supported here. At one time, my programme leader was more than willing to support me whilst my daughter was unwell, up until she was feeling much better. She was very helpful and gave me an extension for the submission of my assessment immediately. There are so many helpful and thoughtful measures that LJMU do to support their students.
