Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) Tri-C — Ohio’s oldest and largest community college — celebrated its 60th anniversary during the 2022-2023 academic year. Over the past six decades, it has grown from a single building in downtown Cleveland to 15 locations throughout Cuyahoga and Medina counties to more fully serve the community. Since the first day of classes in September 1963, more than 1.2 million students have come to Tri-C for a lifechanging education and a better future. Tri-C offers the lowest tuition in Ohio, allowing residents from all socioeconomic backgrounds to obtain a degree or workforce credential and pursue a successful career. The College ranked No. 5 in Intelligent.com’s Best Overall Community Colleges in the Nation in 2022 and was named Intelligent’s Most Affordable Online Community College in 2021 and 2022.

Student Spending Impact Tri-C students spend money on groceries, mortgage and rent payments, and other living expenses at county businesses. One in three Tri-C students comes from outside Cuyahoga County, some of whom relocated to the county. Student spending during the 2020-2021 fiscal year added $35.5 million to the Cuyahoga County economy.
Alumni Impact Over the years, Tri-C students have entered or re-entered the workforce with newly acquired knowledge and skills. Today, hundreds of thousands of these former students are employed throughout Cuyahoga County. The net impact of Tri-C’s former students employed in the county amounted to $1.3 billion in added income in the 2020-2021 fiscal year.

During the 2020-2021 fiscal year, Tri-C students paid $51.3 million to cover tuition, fees, supplies and interest on student loans.
In return for the $216.6 million in funding entrusted to Tri-C by taxpayers during the 20202021 fiscal year, the community benefited from $280.8 million in added tax revenue stemming from students’ higher lifetime earnings and increased business output. The reduced demand for government-funded services added another $22.5 million in benefits.
In the 2020-2021 fiscal year, Ohio invested $342 million to support Tri-C. In turn, the Ohio economy will grow by $4 billion throughout students’ working lives. Ohioans will also enjoy $68.7 million in public and private sector savings.

Youth and Early College Advanced Technology Academy In partnership with local employers, the Advanced Technology Academy (ATA), a workforce training program funded through Ohio Means Jobs | Cleveland-Cuyahoga County, provided short-term, in-demand training and professional development to 92 young adults. Of those students, 95% earned a certificate and entered fields such as health care, manufacturing and customer service.

Creative Arts Academy The Tri-C Creative Arts Academy (CAA) offers a wide curriculum of mastery-level training in dance, orchestra, band, vocal arts and media arts, as well as private instruction. More than 1,500 students from 90 ZIP codes enrolled in classes and summer camps throughout the year. Last year, 12% of CAA students enrolled in Tri-C credit classes while in high school. The academy produces high-quality public performances and community events to promote arts education and program awareness. Nearly 10,000 community members attended CAA events, including 20 student performances, four Classical Piano Series concerts and two art exhibitions.

Cuyahoga Community College
High Tech Academy Established by Tri-C and CMSD, High Tech Academy (HTA) allows students to study at their home school in the morning and attend traditional college classes at Tri-C’s Metropolitan Campus in the afternoon, earning college credit while working toward their high school diploma. Eighty‑four CMSD high school students enrolled in HTA, and 77% of HTA students enrolled at a four-year college or university after graduating from high school.
Mandel Youth Humanities Academy The Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Youth Humanities Academy offers rising high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to broaden their humanities education and get a glimpse of college life at Tri-C. “City as Text” experiences take students out of the formal classroom setting and into the community, where the city itself becomes a book to read, explore and examine. Fourteen alumni from the program’s first two cohorts have graduated high school, and 12 are enrolled in college.

Youth Technology Academy Tri-C’s Youth Technology Academy (YTA) is a STEM career exploration program for high school students that offers college credit in electrical and mechanical engineering and construction. Partnering with 15 high schools — including CMSD, private, charter and suburban schools — YTA enrolled 583 students and provided technology training during the school day. It also hosted a Varsity FIRST Robotics Team of 25 students from seven schools.

MC2 STEM High School Tri-C is home to the 10th-grade class of the CMSD MC2 STEM High School, which offers students a rigorous STEM education. There were approximately 100 CMSD students enrolled in the program with access to state-of-the-art STEM resources.

Tech Prep The Ohio College Tech Prep program begins in the 11th grade and continues through college and beyond with a curriculum that reflects real-world technical careers.
Say Yes Scholars The Say Yes Scholars program supports scholarship-eligible CMSD students. More than 350 students received one-to-one coaching, transfer and career planning, and social-emotional support.
• Last year, 236 Tech Prep students earned degrees or certificates through Tri-C. • More than 1,200 CMSD students attended the College Now: Cleveland Goes to College Fair. • Collaborations with Lake Erie International High School during Career Technical Education (CTE) Week exposed 100 students to CTE programs. • Multiple events, including Excel TECC Opportunity Night and open houses at career centers, reached more than 1,700 parents, guardians and students, offering information about career opportunities and pathways to earning college credit.

TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) provides academic advising, tutoring, financial aid, academic development workshops and cultural enrichment activities to traditionally underserved students. SSS provided 500 students with the skills and support needed to graduate from or transfer to fouryear institutions.
Since the Educational Talent Search (ETS) began at Tri-C in 1968, it has offered students in grades six through 12 a variety of free services and scholastic, cultural and enrichment activities to help them succeed in college. TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science The Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) Program is an after-school pre-college program that provides college prep services and exposure to educational and career opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM). The program is federally funded and served 56 students. • Students from East Technical, Garrett Morgan and Lincoln-West high schools participated in workshops, college tours and cultural events, including a FAFSA workshop, an Evolution of Music project and a trip to Cedar Point.
• Specific UBMS services include afterschool enrichment at selected high schools, Tri-C campuses and remotely, counseling and advising, exam and SAT/ ACT prep, a six-week summer STEM Academy, college visits and fairs, cultural events and personal development, and workshops and field trips.

Youth Camps Dozens of camps provide enriching experiences for youth of all ages to grow and learn from Tri-C’s top educators. More than 200 campers participated in sessions, including computer programming, video game design and coding, and basketball.

Adult Programs and Services Access Centers Tri-C’s four Access Centers support individuals and families with affordable or no-cost community-based educational and workforce programming that leads to a job with familysupporting wages or a pathway to a college degree. During the year, 310 participants enrolled in 10 courses. Tri-C Access Centers partner with Esperanza Inc., the MetroHealth System, University Settlement (Broadway-Slavic Village), Olivet Housing and Community Development Corporation (an arm of the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church) and the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority.

Career Readiness More than 11,000 Tri-C students participated in experiential learning opportunities, including internships and co-ops, with the region’s top employers. Experiential learning gives students handson experience in their field of study and provides local businesses with access to a diverse talent pool — both of which are essential to growing the region’s economy.
Tri-C’s Career Center hosted 18 hiring events, including the Business and IT Career Fair, Meet the Accountants, the Massage Therapy Career Fair, the Health Care Career Fair, the Class of 2023 Career Fair and more. The Career Center also hosted 27 community-based workshops at local women’s shelters, Tri-C Access Centers, high schools and on campus. The workshops featured career exploration, resume development, jobsearch strategies, interview strategies and LinkedIn use for 285 community members.

Citizens Police Academy Citizens police academies help citizens and police connect. Citizens can ask questions, hear lectures and participate in hands-on, scenario-based training to gain insight into policing. There were 18 participants in the spring 2023 training. The Parma Heights Citizens Police Academy held classes at the Public Safety Training Center.

Encore 55+ Learning Providing unique educational experiences and social interaction for people 55 and older, the Encore 55+ program engaged nearly 900 community members both in person and virtually.
Ohio Options for Adults Ohio Options for Adults offers no-cost services through Aspire and the Adult Diploma Program (ADP). Aspire offers classes for high school equivalency test preparation (GED® and HiSET) and English as a Second Language. ADP provides job training and an alternate pathway for adults 18 and older to earn an industryrecognized credential.

Veterans The Veteran and Military Connected Services (VMCS) program serves veterans, reservists, active duty, National Guardsmen and their dependents by providing support services throughout their educational journey. VMCS offers guidance on using military benefits, tutoring to prepare for entrance and the submission of transcripts. Each campus has a veterans center that helps veterans transition from military life to the civilian world and provides a safe place to connect with other veterans. Tri-C is proud to have received the Collegiate Purple Star designation from the state of Ohio in 2022.

Voter Education Helping students become civically engaged and confident voters not only strengthens their voices but also prepares them to become confident, engaged citizens and community leaders. Since 2018, Tri-C has held a fall voter education event, The Voting Experience. Annually, close to 100 students, faculty and staff uplift the Promote the Vote efforts at Tri-C. For its efforts as a national leader in nonpartisan, peer-to-peer student voter engagement, Tri-C was recognized as a Voter Friendly Campus for the third time in March 2023. 24 |

Women in Transition The Women in Transition program is a no-cost, noncredit course designed to help women move their lives forward through academic and professional development. During the year, 161 women graduated from the program, and 29 continued their education by enrolling at Tri-C.

Employee Training Tri-C offers Northeast Ohio businesses and individuals professional training and development to improve organizational performance and overcome business challenges. To address the skilled labor gap in Northeast Ohio, employers rely on Tri-C to upskill their current workforce through training and education. During the year, 336 employees from leading companies completed their training at Tri-C.
Cargill
Norman Noble Inc.
Tri-C started a new partnership with Cargill to provide technician training for its workforce. Tri-C is offering welding training to Cargill employees and is developing other training opportunities with Cargill to upskill its workforce.
The Manufacturing Center of Excellence has partnered with Norman Noble Inc., a medical device contract manufacturer, to create a training program for new hires.
Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. helps train and develop skilled workers through a one-week intensive welding training program.
Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority The Transportation Innovation Center has partnered with the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority to prepare people for a career as a bus driver.
Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District Tri-C has been partnering with the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) on an apprenticeship program to train its workers as electrical and mechanical technicians.
Nestle Tri-C began a new partnership to provide on‑site training at Nestle’s locations in Cleveland and Solon.

Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses (10KSB), in partnership with Tri-C, helps entrepreneurs grow their businesses and create jobs by providing education, financial capital and business support services. Seventysix business owners completed the program, while close to 900 have completed the no-cost training during the past decade. In addition, 79 businesses hired more than 90 Tri-C interns. Tri-C is one of 23 locations in the country to offer the program and one of just four locations to offer the 10KSB Fellows program that connects historically underrepresented college students with small businesses through paid internships.

The Master Class with “LaRese Purnell and his
Entrepreneur in Residence The Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) initiative features master classes for small business owners. Created by Huntington National Bank and the city of Cleveland, these free financial literacy workshops provide business coaching and skills training to local entrepreneurs. Tri-C is one of 11 nonprofit partners hosting these workshops, which focus on minorities and women. Nearly 125 community members attended each of Tri‑C’s four EIR workshop sessions to learn how to improve their businesses.

Scholarship Luncheon event has raised
$24 million
in proceeds that grow scholarships.
Mission The mission is to provide resources for advancing student success at Cuyahoga Community College and to transform the lives of those Tri-C serves. Founded in 1973, the Tri-C Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization with a volunteer board of directors comprised of the region’s industry and community leaders. The Foundation is celebrating 50 years of providing resources needed to help Tri-C students learn, thrive and succeed.
Scholarships Thanks to the generosity of donors and thoughtful stewardship by the Tri-C Foundation Board of Directors, a record $5 million in scholarships was awarded to 4,561 students last year. The annual Presidential Scholarship Luncheon raises scholarship money for Tri-C students. This longstanding event brings together supporters and a dynamic keynote speaker while showcasing Tri-C students and the College’s mission. Since its inception in 1992, the event has raised more than $24 million to support student scholarships.

Skills to Succeed
Workforce Development
The Skills to Succeed campaign concluded on June 30, 2023, surpassing its $50 million goal by raising $58 million to support student success.
Tri-C’s Office of Resource Development and the Foundation secured 105 grants with a focus on increasing support for students pursuing workforce certificates and credentials.
Since launching in July 2019, the Skills to Succeed campaign has enabled Tri-C to: Award $17 million in scholarships to 14,000 students Distribute $1.5 million in student emergency support after doubling the size of the student emergency fund endowment
Double annual scholarship support for diverse populations and nondegree workforce students Open three new campus food pantries with more than 10,500 visits over the last two years Support K-12 programs that reached 76,000 youths Offer more than 59,000 work-based learning experiences for students Award more than 55,000 certificates and credentials in high-demand fields
Food Pantries The Pantry, located at all four Tri-C campuses, ensures all students have access to nutritious food and essential supplies. Students in need of food assistance and other necessities can visit any location to pick up items at no cost.
Shortly after enrolling in classes, I had my “ beautiful son, Jeremy. Now that I have the added responsibility of taking care of another life, it has become even more stressful to budget. The Pantry, like many of Tri-C’s student-centered programs, provides an extra source of security. Just the sight of the contents of The Pantry is enough to bring tears to my eyes. I speak for many students when I say this support lifts a weight off our shoulders. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2023: Community Celebration Each year since 1977, Tri-C celebrates the life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. as part of its ongoing commitment to pursue King’s Beloved Community and a reminder of his work toward racial equity. The College’s 46th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, held Jan. 16, 2023, and televised on WKYC, featured Tri-C student presenters, the College’s orchestra program and a musical performance by the Rev. Marvin L. Winans.
Juneteenth Celebration Tri-C recognizes that Juneteenth can bring the community closer to a collective goal of inclusion, equality and justice for all. Throughout June 2023, Tri-C sponsored events and celebrations and encouraged attendance at community-held programs throughout Cleveland and the surrounding communities.

Stand for Racial Justice Events The Stand for Racial Justice Alliance coordinated six panel discussions and other campus events that were attended by approximately 180 people. Stand for Racial Justice builds upon the College’s work in conflict resolution, social justice and sustained dialogue to find meaningful ways to convene and engage students, faculty, staff and the broader community. Panel Discussion Topics • Generational Trauma of Hate (LGBTQ+): How the Stonewall Movement launched the fight for LGBTQ+ rights • Generational Trauma of Racism (Asian American Pacific Islander): The plight of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community in America • Food Insecurity – Advocacy 101: Legislation impacting food insecurity and strategies to engage with elected officials
Combined Campaign Tri-C employees support community organizations year-round by volunteering, donating and helping whenever possible. One of those efforts is the annual Combined Campaign, which raised $102,242 in the 2022-2023 fiscal year to support Community Shares, the United Negro College Fund and United Way of Greater Cleveland.

JazzFest programming reaches nearly

members of the community, providing educational opportunities for people of all ages and walks of life.
Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland, presented by Key Bank, is a weekend-long celebration of jazz and jazz culture. Tri-C JazzFest engages a diverse audience in terms of race, age and economics. The free outdoor activities — from concerts to cooking demonstrations — attract young people, families with children and seniors. In June 2023, approximately 17,000 people enjoyed the outdoor events. Throughout the year, JazzFest programming reaches nearly 58,000 members of the community, providing educational opportunities for people of all ages and walks of life.

National Youth Jazz Orchestra Concert Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Jazz Orchestra kicked off its first-ever U.S. tour at Tri-C in July 2022. Students from the Tri-C JazzFest Academy, under Dominick Farinacci’s direction, opened the concert. More than 215 attendees from the community enjoyed the performance.
Lviv Philharmonic National Orchestra Concert The Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine, one of Europe’s oldest orchestras, performed for nearly 700 audience members at the Tri-C Metropolitan Campus in February 2023 as part of the Classical Piano Series. The performance came on the eve of the one-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and raised awareness of the conflict throughout the region, which is home to more than 10,000 Ukrainians.

Tri-C students make a significant impact on the community’s health and well-being.
During the year, they provided over
6,800
community health and wellness services.
Dental Hygiene Clinic Tri-C dental hygiene students provided care — including exams, x-rays, cleanings, nonsurgical treatment for periodontal disease, sealants and whitening trays — at Tri-C’s Dental Hygiene Clinic. Students also participated in community outreach events, providing oral health information and supplies to more than 2,000 community members as part of their training.

Fitness Testing and Training The Sport and Exercise Studies program welcomed community participants to the program’s BodPod and metabolic testing services over the summer. Students gain experience administering advanced fitness tests, and the community receives access to low-cost fitness testing services.
Massage Therapy Clinic Tri-C massage therapy students performed massages on community members — most of whom were seniors who might not otherwise be able to afford this service.
Optical Dispensary Tri-C’s Metropolitan Campus Optical Dispensary is a studentrun clinic where students in the Optical Technology program gain experience managing an optical store. As part of their coursework, students design, fabricate and dispense free eyeglasses to those in need.

Pursuit of Happiness Lecture Series
Students provided 268 physical therapy treatment sessions to the community.
The Robert Searson Learning for Life program promotes lifelong learning through lectures on academic and community-oriented topics. The community-based education program focused on what brings people joy with the free Pursuit of Happiness Lecture Series.
The Preventative Care Center has given “ me access to quality therapy at a low cost. The students and instructors work very well together. I feel that they are helping me maintain my mobility and regain some strength and flexibility. Therapy is so expensive, and I would not have access without this program. I wish more people were able to take advantage of the program. Thanks, Tri-C, for helping me maintain my independence.
Wellness and Recreation Tri-C’s fitness centers, pools and outdoor tracks are available for community use through Tri-C’s Community Membership program.
