Symbiotic Neighborhood Center

Site: West Central Dist, Tainan, Taiwan

Program: neighborhood center, library

Area: 3567m2

Timeline: 2022, 2 month

The site is located in the surrounding area of the old channels, used to be prosperous for a while, with high-density commercial residential activities."The temple", as the belief center of residents, provides residents communication areas for their daliy life.

However the Hai'an Road Underground Street Project, the demolition China Town Mall(which was built on top of the old harbour next to Tainan Canal in 1983), and the recent Canal Star Diamond Project tourism development. These project blocked the connection between this area and the city center, the interaction between the community had disappeared.

so it commercial and residents, demolition of to the Project for between community

On the smaller scale, I regard the Symbiotic Neighborhood Center as a node to link "the commercial pedestrian zone(Hai'an Road)" and "waterfront accessible space".

As the temple regarded as the belief center of residents, my concept is to leave open spaces as an extension of the two temples next to the site. Preserving daily activities for residents. Hoping the intervention of the Symbiotic Neighborhood Center is not to block the connection of the neighborhood here, but to maintain the sense of scale of the existing alleys in Tainan city as an extension of the scale of the houses.

On the large scale, the old water be observed, served as the basis industry since the 17th century. On was considered as an important on the east side, the roundabout hub of Tainan city. Commercial and through the east-west axis. Besides, entertainment for residents at that place here.

Various activities can take scenes of the residents through the Center, combining various programs be in the neighborhood.

My strategy is to disperse volumes in different ways, analyzing the pros and cons of different layouts. Attempt to extend the sense of scale of the existing alleys as an entrance of the Symbiotic Neighborhood Center. The flow can easily shuttle around the outside of the building.

By creating as many semi-open spaces as possible in response to Tainan's culture and climate. Semi-open spaces provide "communication fields" for people of all ages. Furthermore, different community functions, such as reading spaces, cooking areas, elderly workshops, and children's playgrounds, should be adjacent to each other and linked to the semi-outdoor spaces in order to increase interaction between different age groups.

Various types of semi-open spaces were incorporated into my design, and these areas were designed to respond to the temples.

Branded Hotel x TDRI Office x Co-working Space

Site: West Central Dist, Tainan, Taiwan

Program: co-working place, TDRI office, brand flagship store, branded hotel

Area: 7600m2

Timeline: 2022, 2.5 month

The site is next to the previous project, but the difference is that adjacent to the commercial axis, as an important commercial node the city, which provide citizens, office workers and even tourists opportunities for interaction.

"GIANT"as the most famous bicycle brand in Taiwan, chooses the as its brand center combined with hotel services simultaneously. addition to serving the public functions, manufacturing space is placed to cooperate with other companies in co-working spaces. In project, I try to separate areas for different groups. Creating several "social area"combined with bicycle functions to exhibit the production process of bicycle.

GIANT BICYCLES X TDRI OFFICE (TAIWAN Design Research Institute)

"TDRI"(Taiwan design research institute), is an important base for design research and development in Taiwan. They hold diverse exhibitions and design forums, and are committed to integrating design into the lives of the public.

"GIANT BICYCLES" is a multinational bicycle brand from Taiwan, who's brand spirit is to incorporate bicycles into people's daily lives, providing different perspectives for cycling journeys. They also created another brand called "YOUBIKE", which provides bicycle rental services in the city, making it easier for people to explore the city.

As a "multifunctional" project, this case involves complex pedestrian circulation. I analyzed the time series of user groups to identify spaces that intersect at the same time, creating opportunities for chance encounters and spontaneous interaction.

Lounge Bar

On the ground floor, I create bike lounge bars along the east-west axis that corresponds to urban open spaces. Tourists from other cities can leisurely explore the city on a bicycle and take a break at the lounge bars, while office workers can grab a cup of coffee before starting their workday. People with different purposes can meet each other in this area.

Corten Steel Structure

To maximize the potential of various bicycle-related activities in my design, I have created three converging cores embedded within different volumes. These cores, made of Corten steel, have varying openings based on the visibility of the bicycle activities taking place within. From a distance, citizens can witness dynamic activities by looking through these openings and enter these spaces via the converging cores.

Previously, cycling activities were typically located on the ground floor. In an effort to create a new type of cycling experience, I have relocated the cycling activities to the upper levels. The cycling flows can circle horizontally and lead up to the manufacturing space, which allows citizens to view the surrounding urban sights.

The cycling flows become an urban elevation that showcases GIANT's brand spirit.

Reuse of old dormitory groups

Site: East Dist, Tainan, Taiwan

Program: co-working places, workshops, restaurant, exhibition space

Timeline: 2021, 2 month

The site is located in the edge of the campus of National Cheng University, surrounded by urban functions, such as commercial spaces, government agencies, and parks, and so on. In the past, Schools tend be blocked out by walls as a boundary to isolate them from outside, order to provide good teaching quality for students. However, in recent years, We began to think about whether the relationship between campus and the city can only be "blocked". As learning methods rapidly changing, people use different ways to acquire knowledge, and learning is no longer limited to campus, and different age groups can also together.

After multiple analysis, I insert different programs responsing analysis, and co-working spaces as main programs to provide places students learning through cooperation with industries.

Observing the site from a historical perspective, the functions of the old dormitories have become unsuitable due to the evolution of times, while the axis has kept changing.

By analyzing the boundaries and axes between learning and living on an urban scale, I have classified them into five types that can lead to future design.

My strategy is to integrate campus spaces into the city's overall image. I plan to create co-working spaces for students from different fields on campus, as well as for students who collaborate with industries. The main offices will be modularized for 6 to 8 people to work together, providing space for youth entrepreneurship. Other discussion spaces will vary according to the number of people.

On the ground floor, I will leave as much open space as possible, providing a community plaza that can accommodate various activities. At the same time, there will be a workshop that offers handmade lessons for residents. On weekdays, students can share their expertise and communicate with the public, and on holidays, the market will be open to the public.

From the section, the main offices which is modularized can't be seen, I try to use split-level to distinguish other discussion spaces, to avoid mutual interferences.

SECTION A-A'

To deal with the old dormitories, I reserve part of the old structures, leaving maximized void space, increase interactions between different layers. Those dormitories become public spaces such as restaurant, exhibition space, and rental conference room.
