DENVER SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION

The region’s K-12 education system includes 19 public school districts, as well as a number of private and parochial school systems.

The system offers many educational choices, including high-quality public schools with alternative learning environments such as charter and magnet schools.

Although excellent private schools are available in Metro Denver, they are not utilized as highly as in other cities due to the quality of our public school system. About 10% of the total student population attended private schools in Metro Denver.

Metro Denver schools all offer open enrollment, meaning students living in one school district can attend a school in any other district. This allows parents to select schools that match each student’s individual needs.

16th Street Mall | This 350,000-square-foot pedestrian mall includes the Denver Pavilions and other retail shops, residential and office buildings, hotels and services. A free shuttle serves the area.

Larimer Square | Located in the heart of downtown Denver, Larimer Square is an area that is not only rich in history, but also features fine shopping and dining. As the Mile High City’s oldest and most historic block, its buildings tell the charming story of the city.

Cherry Creek North | Home to more than 320 independently owned businesses, a unique collection of boutiques, spas, restaurants, galleries and other specialty shops in the heart of central Denver. Cherry Creek Shopping Center is one of the region’s most popular shopping destinations with 160 restaurants and stores.

Park Meadows | Dubbed a “retail resort”, the 1.6 million-squarefoot Park Meadows mall has the warm and rustic feel of a beautiful mountain lodge, and offers more than 185 shops.

Pearl Street Mall | More than 1,000 locally-owned and national businesses fill the red-brick, pedestrian-only thoroughfare, which runs roughly along Pearl Street. It is also home to much of Boulder’s nightlife, including musicians, performers and holiday lights.

Belmar | A 103-acre downtown district in the City of Lakewood. This project took an old mall and revitalized it into a destination that now combines retailers, boutiques, restaurants, cafes, theaters, offices, residences, artist studios, parks, and plazas –all within 22 city blocks.

Flatiron Crossing | The views of the Flatirons of Boulder are reason enough to visit this 1.5 million-square-foot, indoor/outdoor shopping center, featuring a pond and sandbox for the kids, plus a skating rink that is open in winter.

The state’s second-largest city, Colorado Springs is home to an array of iconic landmarks and tourist attractions, such as 14,115-foot mountain, Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, the United States Air Force Academy, and 24 national sports governing bodies, including the United States Olympic Committee, the United States Olympic Training Center, and USA Hockey.

Welcome to THE VAIL VALLEY

Overview | One hundred miles west of Denver sits the majestic mountains of the Vail Valley, an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts, cultural aficionados and city dwellers looking for an inspiring mountain escape. With an average annual snowfall of almost 20 feet, the Valley features some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the world. In the

Things to Do | In winter, skiers and snowboarders have access to Vail’s legendary Back Bowls and Beaver Creek’s prestigious Birds of Prey World Cup downhill ski course, as well as snowmobiling, Nordic skiing, sleigh rides, Snowcat tours and tubing. It also features world-class dining, popular farmers’ markets, and nationally recognized events, such as the annual Vail Dance Festival and the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, hosted at Ford Amphitheater, one of the most picturesque outdoor entertainment venues in the world.

Schools | Eagle County is an innovative school district comprised of diverse educational options. Public schools such as Eagle Valley and Battle Mountain High Schools offer many AP and college Dual Enrollment courses. Vail Mountain School (K-12) and Vail Christian High School are two examples of the Valley’s prestigious, independent schools. And Colorado Mountain College offers an extensive list of two- and four-year degrees.

Transportation | Visitors can fly into Denver International Airport (DIA), located about 100 miles east of Vail, or into Eagle Country Regional Airport (EGE), which is located about 35 minutes west of Vail and offers direct flights from New York City, Dallas, Miami, Phoenix and other major cities. Getting around the valley is simple, even in the snowy winter months. In the town of Vail, you can ride the free in-town bus that runs 21 hours a day, year-round. Welcome to SUMMIT COUNTY

Overview | Summit County, located just over an hour from Denver, features several stunning mountain ranges, including portions of the Gore Range, Tenmile Range and the Front Range. Towns like Breckenridge and Frisco, with their rich mining histories and charming Victorian homes, make visitors feel like they just stepped into the Wild West. And Lake Dillion, the highest deep-water marina in the world, majestically sits in the center if it all.

Things to Do | Summit County is an outdoor-lovers paradise. In winter, the picturesque peaks and recordbreaking snow conditions of resorts such as Keystone, Copper and A-Basin offer world-class skiing and snowboarding. Breckenridge ski resort, which boasts North America’s highest chair lift with a peak elevation of 12,840 feet, is consistently ranked one of the most popular resorts in the nation.

When the weather warms up, there is hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and golf at renowned Keystone Ranch Golf Course and The River Course at Keystone, plus kayaking, sailing, and stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Dillon. In addition, there are free festivals, live music, art class and museums throughout the county.

Schools | Summit County Schools have six elementary schools, a middle school and a high school, plus a public alternative school for grades 7-12 and a local private school for grades 6-12.

Transportation | Getting around is easy with the help of the county-wide free bus system known as “The Summit Stage.” All the ski resorts provide free shuttles throughout their respective resorts. The popular bus system, Bustang, connects communities along I-25 and I-70, and there are several shuttle services for rides to and from Denver International Airport.

Welcome to GRAND COUNTY

Overview | With both Denver and Rocky Mountain National Park less than an hour away, Grand County is an exceptional destination – close enough to the city to make it an easy

getaway, and close enough to the national park to feel a world away. A beautiful spot with hundreds of acres of unspoiled wilderness, Winter Park and its surroundings are a laid-back, easy-to-access

Things to Do | Winter Park is known for its expansive skiing and snowboarding, and its infamous bump runs at Mary Jane. In summertime, there’s more than 600 miles of mountain biking and hiking trails; kayaking, sailing, Jetskiing, waterskiing and fly fishing on Grand Lake; and easy access to breathtaking Rocky Mountain National Park.

Schools | The East Grand School District serves Fraser, Granby and Grand Lake, Hot Sulphur Springs, Tabernash and Winter Park. This school district has several school options for students including the Fraser Valley and Granby Elementary Schools, East Grand Middle School and Middle Park High School.

Transportation | Just over 60 miles from Denver, Winter Park is one of the easiest resorts to get to by car. Added bonus: On weekends throughout the winter, skiers and snowboarders from Denver can take advantage of the Amtrak ski train.

Welcome to CRESTED BUTTE

Overview | Set in Southwest Colorado, Crested Butte is a stunning mountain resort community renowned for its rugged peaks, end-of-the-road location and unparalleled outdoor activities. The town, born of the gold and silver booms of the late-1800s and designated a National Historic District in 1974, maintains a colorful, Wild West character all its own.

Things to Do |

Surrounded by Gunnison National Forest, and within easy proximity of Blue Mesa Reservoir, Crested Butte is a haven for adventure seekers looking for a quintessential Rocky Mountain experience. When it snows, skiing, snowboarding and Nordic skiing are popular. In the summer, there’s rock climbing, hiking, biking, river rafting, horseback riding, kayaking and more. Crested Butte’s charmingly historic main street features quaint shops, galleries, restaurants and distilleries.

Schools | Crested Butte’s K-12 Community School is consistently ranked as a top 5% performer in Colorado and the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

Transportation | Although Crested Butte is located deep within the Rocky Mountains, it is not difficult to get to. Several major airlines offer either direct flights or Denver connections into the nearby Gunnison Airport, which is just 30 minutes from town. From there, it’s just a shuttle ride away. Once in town, the free bus system shuttles people to and from the ski area, town and many residential areas.

Overview | The historic town of Telluride, designated as a National Historic Landmark District in 1964, sits near the end of a picturesque box canyon surrounded by majestic 13,000 and

14,000-foot peaks. Just a mile and a half long by six blocks wide, downtown Telluride is an idyllic combination of colorful Victorian homes, independent boutiques and galleries, and iconic

Things to Do | Telluride is, of course, home to the ski resort, but many other opportunities for recreation abound in the box canyon. There are a wealth of trails and old mining roads in the mountains and basins surrounding Telluride. In winter, they can be used for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling, while in summer, they are great for hiking and mountain biking. There are also many opportunities for fishing and horseback riding, and a variety of well-known events such as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

Schools | The Telluride R-1 School District is one of the top-performing districts in the state and has been recognized nationally as well. In 2019, it was ranked #1 in all of Colorado and, in 2018, U.S. News and World Report awarded a gold medal to Telluride High School and ranked it 9th in the state.

Transportation | The Telluride region has two local airports, Telluride Regional Airport (TEX) and Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ). Travelers can fly on a 30-seat passenger jet from Denver to Telluride on Denver Air Connection. Several airlines offer direct flights into Montrose from major cities throughout the country, including Dallas/Fort Worth, LA and Chicago.

Overview | Located among the Elk Mountains in the Roaring Fork Valley, Aspen sits at nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountains in the state.

Founded as a mining camp during the 1880s Silver Boom, and revitalized in the mid-20th century with the development of Aspen ski resort, Aspen has a long and storied history filled with colorful characters— ranging from counter-cultural icons, to world-renowned intellectuals, to affluent celebrities who enjoy hitting the slopes and the après-ski scene.

In winter, there are four outstanding mountains for skiing and snowboarding: Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass and Buttermilk. Other winter activities including Nordic skiing, dog sledding, ice skating, snow tubing and more. Schools | The Aspen School District has a preschool, elementary school, middle school, high school, and charter school for grades K-12. Aspen Country Day School, with its beautiful forested campus along Castle Creek, welcomes approximately 250 students (preschoolers through 8th graders) each year.

Transportation | Aspen is easily accessible from both Denver and Grand Junction. It’s approximately three and a half hours by car from Denver International Airport, and just over two hours by car from Grand Junctional Regional Airport. For those interested in flying into Aspen, there’s the Aspen/ Pitkin County Airport located just three miles away.

From the town of Aspen, there are a variety of options, including free buses throughout the Valley and a 42-mile bike path called the Rio Grande Trail, which connects Aspen to Glenwood Springs.

TAX AND LICENSE BASICS

COLORADO INCOME TAX

Colorado posted the 14th lowest individual income tax rate in 2023 – 4.4% flat tax.

PROPERTY TAX

The State of Colorado assesses property taxes based on individual school districts. Colorado has some of the lowest residential property taxes in the country, with an average effective rate of just 0.48%.

VEHICLE LICENSE FEES

Colorado charges a yearly licensing fee for your vehicle. The fees are dependent upon the type and year of vehicle and the county in which you live. New residents have up to 90 days to obtain Colorado license plates.

COLORADO DRIVER’S LICENSE

New residents have 30 days to obtain a Colorado Driver’s license.
