Editor’s Letter

The little things When it comes to traditional Hong Kong weddings, it’s practically obligatory to invite every person you’ve ever sort-of spoken to - plus your parents’ closest 500 friends. But for some couples, bigger isn’t always better. That’s why we’ve dedicated this issue of My Hong Kong Wedding to intimate celebrations. Whether you’re introverted, minimalistic or simply want to save some cash, these small-scale wedding ideas should inspire an unforgettable celebration with the people who are most integral to your lives. To help get those juices flowing, we’ve featured wedding stories from real couples (p.20) who managed to whittle their guest list down to the nearest and dearest. We’ve also put together a shortlist of beautiful intimate venues (p.28) - yes, they exist in Hong Kong! - for good measure. You’ll also find the season’s top wedding trends (p.12), alongside gorgeous wedding gift ideas (p.16), delicate jewellery (p.14) and makeup must-haves (p.50). And on p.40, don’t miss these touching moments captured by a few of the city’s top photographers. Set on a destination wedding? We’ve taken a trip to China’s heritage city of Lijiang where a gorgeous 100-guest destination wedding (p.52) will surely get your heart racing - as will the epic honeymoon and travel deals on p.56. Whether you’re planning a wedding for 10 or 10,000 we hope this issue comes in handy. Happy planning!

Mood Board

From calligraphy-ing your cocktail list to flirty pink gowns and deep berry tones, these fall wedding trends are coming your way. By Mahira Jamshed

PITCH A TENT If you’re getting hitched during the most beautiful time of year, why not enjoy it? Decor is getting an allnatural spin this fall, and so too are venues. The next big thing? Tented weddings in remote outdoor settings. A challenge in Hong Kong, but it can be done!

Who says you have to wear white on your wedding day? A dash of colour can work wonders on some skin tones and might make you feel more like yourself. Effortlessly romantic blush and rose tones have modern brides looking elegant and ethereal all at once.

BRING IT INSIDE Of course, we don’t want mud on our heels. So if you’re dreaming of an indoor wedding with a rustic touch, an easy way to pull it off is with wooden pallet art, which can double as escort boards. Print seating cards on creamy paper, pin it to the board, and you’ve got instant nature - without stepping foot outside. 12

DBR Weddings

A wonderful twist on classic red. Not only do shades of burgundy and plum match this season’s Pantone palette, but these rich colours make for gorgeous bouquets, centrepieces - and wine, of course!

Hong Kong might be known for its high-flying weddings and epic banquet dinners, but a 500-person guest list isn’t for everyone. We caught up with three Hong Kong couples to hear all about their intimate weddings, which ranged from 11 to 100 people. By Susie Riza

people, so that determined the size of our guest list. The room has one large, round table so our party could all chat easily together, and the view is beautiful, especially in the evening. We invited friends who are like family to us in Hong Kong and who know us both very well. Q Why did you choose The Upper House? DL I was formerly the editor of Upper House magazine and have great memories. Our first date, engagement dinner and many other events have been celebrated at the hotel and it was a natural choice. The all-star team made it perfect. Q How would you describe your wedding aesthetic? DL The Upper House has a very chic and symmetrical aesthetic so we didn't need to do much when it came to decor and ambiance. We wanted everything

Dervla Louli AND

Alister Musgrave

fter meeting on New Year's Eve, Dervla Louli and Alister Musgrave had a whirlwind Hong Kong romance, which culminated in a civil ceremony and intimate dinner in Hong Kong. Dervla, founder of wellness travel portal Compare Retreats, tells us about the 11-person celebration.

Q How did you and your husband meet? DL Our best friends introduced us at Alister’s New Year’s Eve party in London. I was living in Hong Kong and he asked me if he could come over to take me on a date. I said ‘yes’ and the rest is history. Q How did you whittle down the guest list to 11? natural with lots of flowers. We stayed away from balloons, plastic and props that would have been thrown away after.

Q How were your personalities reflected? DL Great food, music and drinks are all important to Alister when it comes to throwing a party, and they were all there in abundance. The iDecorate brass pineapples on the table reflected a small obsession I have. I fell in love with some Casa Capriz vintage pineapples as I was walking along Aberdeen Street a few years ago, and have collected them ever since.

Q Any advice for other couples? DL Go with your gut. If you love a venue, book it straight away. The same goes for the dress, cake, florist, photographer, band... Once you start to overthink things, you just end up in a Pinterest spiral.

Q What else did you do a little differently? DL We made sure that waste was kept to a minimum, so guests went home with flowers. In that sense, we tried to keep the aesthetic very

Nathan AND

Koscina Green

urrounded by 100 of their closest family and friends, Nathan and Koscina Green tied the knot at Duddell’s restaurant last year.

Q Why did you choose Duddell’s? NG Duddell’s offered everything we wanted, all in one space, and fantastic food that both our western and local guests could enjoy. The layout is perfect and allowed us to have our reception on the terrace followed by dinner downstairs, then back up to the terrace for evening drinks. Q Why did you choose an intimate wedding, rather than a big banquet? NG We wanted to keep the wedding small and simple, so we only invited our close friends and immediate family. We have never liked the notion that this should be the happiest day of our lives we always thought that was a sad idea. We just wanted everyone to have fun. Q How else did you save some cash? NG We invited a limited number of our nearest and dearest for the ceremony and dinner, then we invited everyone else for drinks in the evening. My suit cost about $3,000. Kos chose a beautiful simple dress which only cost $2,500.

Q How did the wedding details reflect your personalities? NG We are both tattooed and have a great passion for tattoos. One of our very good friends Jennifer is the owner and cake designer of Cake It Studio. She designed our wedding cake, inspired by our tattoo-themed invitation. She even put our dogs Trixie and Lollie on the cake, as they couldn’t join our wedding. Q Kos, you were pregnant, right? Where did you get your dress? NG In the beginning, I chose a simple wedding dress from Shopbop. However, I was five months’ pregnant before our big day. My original dress couldn’t fit my baby belly, so I had to look for a maternity wedding dress. In the end, I found it online at In hindsight... GLAD I SPENT ON: The food. The guests loved all the dishes. GLAD I SAVED ON: Decorations - you don’t have to spend loads to have a beautiful wedding.

Janice Ng AND

Francesco Benazzi

ongkonger Janice Ng and Italian Francesco Benazzi celebrated their marriage in the Chinese Garden of Kowloon Park, followed by a celebration at The Pawn, with about 80 people.

Q Why did you choose The Pawn? JN Since we’re from different cultures, we wanted to have some Hong Kong and European touches on our big day. We had an intimate family lunch at Hullett House and a more lively and friendly dinner at the Pawn - two historical places with two completely different rhythms. Q What did you like about The Pawn? JN The rooftop of The Pawn is a perfect spot in the heart of Wan Chai. We started with a welcome cocktail on the balcony and then had dinner in the main hall. We decorated the roof with colourful lanterns that we put together the day before - it was a lot of fun. We created a historical path through our lives with pictures of us from when we were born to now - a total of 88 pictures.

Q How did your wedding veer from tradition? JN We had to merge two nationalities and cultures. We had a traditional Chinese wedding with a less traditional

dinner. I think the furthest we veered from tradition was when we dressed our best man - Panda, our beloved husky - up in a purple bow-tie. Q What was the most memorable moment of the day? JN The entire day was magical and memorable! I can still remember every single step from the early morning until night. The most touching part was when we had our wedding celebration under the Pagoda in the Chinese Garden of Kowloon Park - it was very emotional for us both.

Who helped us:

MAKEUP: Dickie Chan,

CAKE: Jeffery Koo,

FLOWERS: Ines Weddings,

TUXEDO: Luxe Tuxedo,

MUSIC: Kai Djuric,

Q How did you put your own stamp on your nuptials? JN My husband and I are both creative so we tried to do as much as we could by ourselves. We designed our own wedding logo for our invitations, cards, boards and menus. My husband had the idea of sealing our invitations with hot wax - we almost burned the kitchen down but it was worth it!

The classic lace wedding dress never goes out of fashion. But there’s so much more to it than meets the eye. By Kate Springer There’s no one way to wear a lace wedding dress. The delicate fabric evokes a timeless elegance, but it’s also surprisingly versatile. Within the world of lace, the materials range from fine and feathery to thick and textured. The cuts vary too, so brides can veer from the classic silhouette for a look that’s as contemporary as they please. We quiz Dana Trang, owner of HITCHED! Bridal, on how to choose a lace you’ll love.

FOLLOW THE PATTERN “If a bride is concerned about the quality and texture, then she should go for French lace. French lace tends to be ivory, not white, and is generally more fine and intricate with interesting patterns. Laces manufactured in other countries, such as China, tends to be rigid and heavier. But of course, French lace is much pricier.”

OWN YOUR STYLE “Lace is feminine and romantic and that’s how many brides would like to look and feel on the day,” says Trang. “There are so many types of lace and designers are always coming up with different ways to work with it, so there is something for everyone.” “I think it’s a very personal choice, so the first thing is to find the type of lace and pattern that you like. Then try it on to see if it suits because, interestingly enough, different types of lace suit different people.” This page: Studio St. Patrick; opposite: Augusta Jones

GIVE IT A TWIST “For a more contemporary look, I’d suggest illusion necklines with lace appliqué; a lace dress with a nude or blush lining; a fitted gown with a detachable lace train; and unusual necklines.” “Another playful way to use lace is with a different lace pattern on every layer of the dress, so when you look at it as a whole, you see intricate patterns shining through. If a bride wants a cleaner look, they can choose a dress with a lace bodice but with a crepe skirt.”

Limor Rosen

“Care for it the same as you would any other wedding dress, but of course be careful not to get rings and bracelets caught on the lace. Lace dresses generally don’t crease as easily, so you actually don’t need to spend as much time steaming it!”

“Some brides actually wear their mother’s or grandmother’s lace dress by altering it to a more modern version. If brides don’t want to go to such extremes, they can see if the lace appliqué of their mother’s or grandmother’s dress works when added to their gown. The same could be said of veils - provided that the colour and length work, the lace hem could be used to make a veil.”

“Ivory on ivory lace will always be a classic, and generally works on all skin tones, but with a darker beige or nude lining, you will need to be more careful. Depending on skin tone, there’s a chance of looking too ‘naked’ or washed out!”

HITCHED! Bridal, 15/F, Room 1501-2, Hing Lung Commercial Building, 68-74 Bonham Strand, Sheung Wan,

Augusta Jones

“Some lace photographs better than others. Corded lace - since it’s more 3D - and laces with intricate patterns will definitely photograph better. Brides can also consider choosing a cream, nude or blush lining so that the lace pops against a contrasting colour.”

A go-to photographer for some of Hong Kong’s biggest society bashes, Ali G Studios immortalizes the day’s emotions in images that are loaded with details and colour.

Jamie Ousby Photography

PRIVATE WORDS: “I wasn’t close enough to hear what they were talking about - but that was a good thing! This was a moment that needed to be captured without interruption..”

A self-proclaimed “photo ninja,” Jamie Ousby Photography has mastered the art of blending in and capturing those unstaged moments of joy.

FOREVER LOVE: “I try to be like a guest with a camera, and the result are moments like this between the bride and her grandmother. I love how close together they are and the tear running down Lixi’s face sets it apart. This is such an important scene to capture - the kind of moment the couple can treasure for years to come.”

A TEARJERKER: “Eric’s reaction to Blu’s vows are so heartwarming and genuine. When he took off his glasses to wipe his eyes, it happened in a split second so I had to be ready. I was so happy when I looked back on this shot. I knew it was a lovely moment that they would remember from their day.”

EPIC MOMENTS: “Set against the backdrop of some incredible palaces in Jaipur, India, this four-day destination wedding was one of the grandest I have ever photographed. I wanted something epic and memorable for the couple, while staying true to their style and the majestic backdrop.” RED DRESS: “The couple had informed me they wanted to create images with the look and feel of the famous Hong Kong movie, ‘In The Mood For Love.’ The challenge was to get the perfect lighting and post production on the image, which was shot at The China Club in Central.”

FLOWER SHOWER: “This was an amazing destination wedding of a Hong Kong couple at The Peninsula Hotel in Bangkok. The key was to inform the guests not to step into the aisle and to throw as many flower petals as they could to get a great effect!” 41

Kenneth Lim Photography With a skilled eye for personal and authentic moments, Kenneth Lim Photography beautifully captures the honest, raw emotions that make a wedding so special.

DAD’S DANCE: “The fatherdaughter dance is one of the old-school wedding traditions I love. It’s a unique few minutes towards the end of the wedding day, when the bride can give thanks to her parents and honour the special bond between father and daughter one last time.”

HUGS FOR ALL: “This big group hug encompassed everything I look for in wedding photography - a heartfelt and authentic, out-of-the-blue moment.” LET IT RAIN: “After the wedding ceremony, it began to rain during our portrait session in Sheung Wan. The bride and groom took cover from the rain and I kept shooting. Just as with marriage, sometimes you just have to stick together and make the best of a bad situation!” 42

Spa Reviews TOP TO TOE

The Peninsula Spa TREATMENT: Bridal Bliss Package PRICE: $3,500

Ritz-Carlton Spa TREATMENT: Velvet Red Carpet Facial PRICE: From $2,080

TIME: 90 minutes

THE VIBE: Perched on the 116th floor of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, the Ritz-Carlton Spa is awash in shades of grey and rich purples. The relaxation room overlooks Victoria Harbour with floor-to-ceiling windows. WHEN TO GO: Book this indulgent treatment a few days before the wedding for firm, hydrated skin. THE GIST: The Velvet Red Carpet Facial is much more than just a facial. It begins with a deep cleanse, extraction and continues with a face and decollage mask, using London-based NuBo skincare. The combination is like ice and fire. On your face, a White Diamond Ice Glow Mask heats up with an intense tingling sensation. Afterwards, a peel-off seaweed mask on your neck and decollage cools and tightens. All the while, the facial includes a hand, arm, chest, neck and head massage. ABOUT THE SNACKS: The relaxation room is stocked with herbal tea, dried fruit, and delicious peanut butter oatmeal raisin cookies. THE RESULTS: My skin did a complete 180. It felt healthy and dewy, and the results continued well into the next week. 116/F, The Ritz-Carlton Spa, ICC, 1 Austin Road West, West Kowloon, 2263-2040,

TIME: 2 hours

THE VIBE: The Peninsula Spa is an expansive, twostorey space with a pool and deck overlooking the harbour on the lower floor, and heat facilities and treatment rooms on the upper level. WHEN TO GO: Treat yourself to this package a few days before the wedding to de-stress. You could even invite your bridesmaids for a full day of pampering. THE GIST: The treatment begins with a 30-minute salt and oil body scrub to get you silky smooth, followed by a 30-minute back massage to ease tension. Finally, a 60-minute Margy’s Monte Carlo Collagen facial uses strong massage techniques to lift and tighten the face, and allow the collagen to penetrate deeply into the skin. The result is a radiance that lasts for days. HOW’S THE SERVICE? We can’t fault the Peninsula for its attention to detail and skilled therapists. ABOUT THE SNACKS: The Bridal Bliss package comes with a healthy three-course meal served at the poolside. THE RESULTS: We couldn’t believe how lifted and radiant we looked after this treatment. It’s perfect if you hate any discomfort as the massage techniques and the products do all the heavy lifting. All you need to do is relax and enjoy. The Peninsula Hong Kong, Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, 2696-6682,

Sense of Touch TREATMENT: Diva Lashes

PRICE: $1,080

TIME: 60 minutes

THE VIBE: Decked out with fresh white interiors, this multi-storey beauty den is deceptively large. As you climb up each level, you’ll find a plush mani-pedi zone and several private treatment rooms.

we wished she had checked in on us. With that said, our eyes calmed down quickly afterwards.

WHEN TO GO: Two to three days before the big day.

ABOUT THE SNACKS: Tea was offered before and after the treatment.

THE GIST: A relatively new technology, Diva Lashes offers an alternative to fake-looking lash extensions. The Keratin lash-lifting treatment amplifies your natural lashes with a semi-permanent lift and curl technique. First, the therapists soften the lashes so they’ll respond to the curl, then they use a rubber mould and a non-toxic (and formaldehyde-free) adhesive to achieve the curl. After that sets, the lashes are doused with a neutralizer. The last step? A lash tint to make your eyes pop. HOW’S THE SERVICE? The therapist clearly explained how the treatment worked. During the process, however, she left us alone for large chunks of time while lashes set and tinted. The tinting process irritated our eye area and

BEST PART: The formula is free of formaldehyde. It’s supposed to last up to 10 weeks - we’ll see! THE RESULTS: There’s no comparison. Our eyes looked bigger and brighter with some curl, plus much more voluminous thanks to the tinting process, which darkened tiny blonde lashes we didn’t know were there. We would definitely recommend it to brides who want a more natural lash look. 1-5/F, 52 D’Aguilar St., Central, 2526-6918,

Mandarin Barber TREATMENT: Shanghainese Pedicure PRICE: $850 TIME: 60 minutes

THE GIST: The Shanghainese pedicure is a technical treatment, where resident pedi-expert Ben Cheung uses razors and knives to shape your toenails, cut away calluses and shave off dead skin. He carefully attacks section by section, feeling for rough skin and patiently slicing it away. HOW’S THE SERVICE? Cheung wasn’t into small talk but, then again, perhaps it’s best that he stayed focused on the blades. BEST PART: The private treatment room and enormous pedicure chair made us feel like royalty.

THE VIBE: With its wood-panelled walls and vintage barber chairs, the Mandarin Barber might feel like a gentlemen’s club, but plenty of women head to this gorgeous art deco space for expert Shanghainese pedicures.

THE RESULTS: Cheung must have shaved off inches of dead skin. A bit gross, for sure, but when we left, it felt like we were walking on air. If you have a beach wedding on the horizon, your feet will look as gorgeous as the rest of you after this session. 2/F, Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong, 5 Connaught Rd., Central, 2825-4088, hongkong.

Leonor Greyl's Voluforme

Le Blanc De Chanel Primer “This primer is perfect for brides, as it’s long lasting and gives off a natural, pearly glow. It instantly brightens and hides any redness, discolouration or pores. The primer can also be used as a highlighter on the cheekbone for a radiant glow.”

“Everyone needs a great hairspray to hold it all together. Voluforme is a medium-hold spray, which is great for a wedding day. All brides love this small 2.4-ounce bottle, which does the job so well.”

The Beauty Blender “My go-to for applying foundation, contouring, or touching up a bride’s makeup throughout the day. You don’t want to touch your face and use your fingers to smooth out any creasing in the makeup - with this, you just dab and press into the skin for an instant refresh.”

the Bag Artist Frances Feldmann of On Location Glam shares her go-to items to have brides looking fresh all day long.

Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder “While we love a dewy skin finish, for the sake of pictures, cameras, and video, this translucent setting powder is vital, as it will remove any shine or unevenness from the skin.”

MAC’s Sheertone Shimmer Blush “This blush is a favourite to use on brides. The coral colour has a slight golden undertone that brings out a glow without any heavy highlighting of the cheekbone. This blush is for brides who like a bit of shimmer instead of a matte finish.”

L’Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara “This is the best mascara on the market. It’s waterproof, long-lasting and applies flawlessly. It’s great for brides who want a full yet natural lash look - it’s one of the cheapest but BEST professional secrets.”

About Frances: Frances Feldmann is the founder of On Location Glam, a Hong Kong-based on-demand beauty service that will send makeup, hair and nail artists to a location of your choosing, be it for a wedding or a big night out. 5395-7405,

Smooth Operator This month we’re looking into laser hair removal, a more permanent solution to waxing or shaving. We speak to Tara Lai, founder of Nude Beautique, about the treatment and its benefits. By Susie Riza How does laser hair removal work? TL: Laser hair removal is a semi-permanent treatment that eliminates unwanted body hair. It directs a wavelength of highly concentrated light at specific hair follicles. Once the pigment in the follicles absorbs the light and energy, it destroys the hair without damaging the surrounding skin.

Hong Kong’s wedding guide for brides in the know

So is it essentially IPL? TL: No, not at all. Unlike IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), laser hair removal is significantly more effective as it’s more targeted - it requires about half as many sessions as IPL. How long does it last? TL: Treatments come in a series of about five sessions. That’s because hair has a six-week cycle and the treatment is highly unlikely be able to target all the hair follicles at once, as they need to be in a more mature stage of growth. After completing the full treatment, the results can last a lifetime, depending on the individual. Who would you suggest it for? TL: Laser hair removal is most effective on people with fair skin and dark hair. The greater the contrast, the better, as the energy needs to targets the melanin in the hair, and not in the skin. Why do brides love it? TL: Brides love laser hair removal because they don’t have to worry about shaving or waxing before the big day, and then again multiple times until the honeymoon is over. It also leaves skin smoother, brighter and firmer by boosting collagen and tightening your pores. When should brides book in? TL: Ideally, start looking into this at least six months ahead of the wedding to ensure you can fit in the sessions.

A LIJIANG LOVE STORY Abby Zhang, the co-founder of Yeechoo, and her husband Jamie Zhou tied the knot last April in Lijiang, China. Still swooning from a gorgeous day, Zhang shares the details on their dreamy destination wedding. By Kate Springer

QWhy did you choose Lijiang for your wedding? Abby Zhang: In 2015, we experienced an unforgettable backpacking journey through Yunnan, where Lijiang is located. From the glittering lights of Lijiang Old Town to the monumental peaks towering over the Tiger Leaping Gorge, to Lake Lugu - a hidden gem deep in the mountain - we were stunned by the breathtaking landscape this diverse province had to offer. And we wanted to share the most gorgeous place in China with our family and closest friends. QWhich venue did you choose? AZ: Pullman Lijiang Resort & Spa. The team there sealed the deal for us. The service was impeccable: extremely detail-orientated, personal and efficient. We were also drawn to the hotel’s backdrop where we took our oaths the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain - and the tasteful interior design of the hotel, which was a blend of east and west. QWhat surprised you most about having a destination wedding? AZ: We never imagined how much stuff we would need to bring back home! After the wedding, you’ll have a lot of luggage to haul as you might not want to throw away a lot of decorations, cards, photos and mementos.

QWhat advice would you give to others who are considering a wedding abroad? AZ: Make sure you have a great local coordinator. We had been to our wedding hotel only once before the wedding, so we relied on our incredible local coordinator. In our case, she was a staff member at our wedding hotel - she helped us make sure all the details were taken care of. QHow did you ensure that your guests had a great time? AZ: We were extremely grateful for every guest who came all the way to Lijiang from around the world, so making sure they had the best experience was our top priority. We monitored weather and everyone's flight statuses to ensure smooth logistics. For our welcome dinner, we took everyone to Lijiang Old Town for local food, and gave them options to explore on their own. We arranged hotel-wide VPN services so all the guests could browse the internet without issues. At the dinner banquet, we passed each guest a hand-written thank you card about our friendship - some of them were in tears after reading it. For guests who decided to spend a few more days in the region, we passed on our travel tips and local contacts.

QAny total screw ups? AZ: Oh yeah! I was way too excited to marry Jamie, so I forgot to bring my bridal bouquet when leaving my villa to the ceremony. In the end, I borrowed a bouquet from one of my bridesmaids to walk down the aisle. QWhat was the most memorable moment? AZ: Seeing all of our friends and family mingling and dancing together at the after party! We were so happy to bring a great group of people together.

Try Something

Trade in something

old for something new to make your special day stand out By Mahira Jamshed

Boxed blooms For a petal-perfect centrepiece that’s easy to transfer and totally hasslefree, ANDRSN’s boxed roses evoke a minimalist aesthetic. Better yet, each box can be personalised with custom-printed tags.

Dim sum dinner

Not fans of the traditional Chinese banquet dinner, but still want a Hong Kong-style feast? Bite-sized and ready to serve, dim sum - though typically a morning meal - is a quintessential Cantonese dining experience that doubles up as the perfect wedding nibbles, whether passed around as canapes or incorporated into dinner with tea-infused cocktails. We love the dumplings at Duddell’s (pictured), Dim Sum Library, Tycoon Tann and The China Club.

Biker Chic

Ready to rock n’ roll? Net-A-Porter’s Rime Arodaky lace jacket is the perfect accessory for bold brides with biker gang aspirations. Wear it at your rehearsal dinner - or even on your wedding day - for a twist on tradition. Then rev up and ride off on a Harley for extra street cred.

Team spirits

Two-piece in a pod

Finding a dress that all your bridesmaid’s love can be a nightmare - so why not scrap the dress all together? Take some inspiration from Melissa Bui’s whimsical SS17 collection, which is full of classy two-piece looks.

Dear Fairy Godmother, Help! My friend is getting married overseas and has asked me to help her source gift favours from Hong Kong. I need something that’s cheap (I have a budget of $3,000 for 100 guests) and quintessentially Hong Kong (she met her husband here). Any bright ideas? For $30 a head, something edible is probably your best bet. It doesn’t get much more traditional than Chinese-style wedding cakes from Kee Wah. The company has innovated in recent years and now offers a modern spin on these traditional delicacies - try the individual pineapple shortcakes stamped with “Double Happiness” in a cute red paper, tin or embroidered cloth box. The paper box starts at just $20 (minimum order of 60 boxes) and the pretty tin ones make for a nice keepsake at $26-$28 per box. Check them out at

Dear Fairy Godmother, I’m on the hunt for some invitation cards. Unfortunately I’ve left things a bit late and they need to be ready in less than a week! Who in this town can get invitations turned around so quickly? Luckily for you, you live in one of the most fast-paced cities in the world, and wedding cards can be printed and ready for collection in just two working days at E-Print (, the go-to spot for all kinds of printing needs, from name cards to foam boards. It’s recently launched a wedding card service, with ready-to-go options. Prices start at just $195 for 100 plain white cards and envelopes, though of course this gets pricier if you choose fancier paper or embellishments. Good luck!

How We Met

Hongkongers Resham Daswani and Vishal Rajwani are the embodiment of the saying “opposites attract.” Resham, a vegan teetotaller and meditation enthusiast, and Vishal, a night owl who loves his single malts, met not in the streets of Sheung Wan or Tsim Sha Tsui, but at an Indian wedding in Thailand 10 years ago. Their lives have been intertwined ever since. Vishal proposed atop Adam’s Peak in Sri Lanka - a joyous culmination of an overnight hike on New Year’s Day 2016. A year later, they returned to Thailand, where they first met, to marry in a traditional Indian ceremony at The Peninsula Bangkok. Photo: Ali G Studios (
