SANDRA BULLOCK
The ageless a-lister talks motherhood, celebrity, and living life outside the box
By Sondra Barr
Twenty-five years ago, a star was born when Sandra Bullock earned global recognition with the huge box-office hit Speed alongside Keanu Reeves. The 1994 action thriller in which she played a passenger on a bus packed with explosives was a sleeper hit and launched the wide-eyed ingénue as a household name. Since then, Bullock has transformed from the low-key girl next door to a seasoned superstar who’s among the most celebrated and highest paid actresses ever.
Now the ageless a-lister can add another accomplishment to her impressive career–– Netflix sensation. According to the Associated Press, 45 million Netflix subscriber accounts worldwide watched the Sandra Bullock thriller Bird Box during its first seven days on the service, the largest first-week success of any movie made for the streaming service.
It’s a feat that’s not lost on Bullock, who recently talked with Alexandra Pollard at the Independent about the success of this post-apocalyptic horror movie. “…the streaming world has elevated the bar for cinema. [Before], if you were a superhero, you were able to get a movie made; anything else was not getting made. Now, with streaming, we have all kinds of work available, so we can act again. This wonderful business is changing, and providing so many more opportunities for women, and people of color. There’s a great change happening.”
Born to a German opera singer mother and a voice teacher father in Virginia, the 54-year-old Bullock is no stranger to commercial big budget movies across many genres. Her dozens of diverse films include A Time to Kill, Miss Congeniality, Crash, Two Weeks’ Notice, The Proposal, and Ocean’s 8. Success has also come in the form of industry recognition. Bullock earned the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actress in 2009’s The Blind Side, which catapulted Bullock to even greater heights.
The following year would bring both highs and lows for Bullock. She adopted her son Louis and dealt with a very public divorce from Jesse James amid news of his multiple affairs. Bullock credits adopting her son with bringing her life into perspective and helping her realize that her biggest and best role wouldn’t be onscreen, but rather behind the scenes as a mother.
In a 2018 interview with the Today Show’s Hoda Kotb, Bullock explained how fate led her to motherhood. In her early forties, Bullock had been considering adoption for years, but it wasn’t until Hurricane Katrina, which caused massive loss of life and destruction in New Orleans in 2005, that she was compelled to begin the adoption process.
MY PRIORITIES ARE MY KIDS, MY KIDS, MY KIDS. MY FAMILY. MY FAMILY.
“Something told me that my child was there,” said Bullock, who endured an extensive adoption paperwork process before laying eyes on her son. “I looked at (Louis), and I just said, ‘Oh, there you are.’ It’s like he had always been there. It’s like he fit in the crook of my arm. He looked me in the eyes, and he was just––he was wise. My child was wise. The beautiful thing that I was constantly told was, ‘The perfect child will find you. You will find your child.’”

THAT’S
IT.

Five years after adopting Louis, Bullock adopted daughter Laila. A doting mother to her two young children, most things take a backseat to the 9 and 7 year old, including her high-powered acting career.
“Everything is about them being ok, being in school, having what they need, their moments. I need to be there for every single moment that they have. It’s harder for me to leave them than I think it is for them when I leave. I don’t leave that much, and I don’t work that much anyone either…So my priorities are my kids, my kids, my kids. My family. My family. That’s it,” she emphasized to Kotb.
It wasn’t until Bird Box, a movie that stars Bullock as a pregnant woman fighting to survive during her pregnancy and then having to figure out how to raise a child while a mysterious condition compels the afflicted to take their own lives, that Bullock came to grips with her biggest fear. “Mine is something happening to my kids,” she said to Pollard. “I live in such a fearful place. I’m so afraid all the time. I think becoming a mother has made me that much more fearful.”
For a while, it scared Bullock that her life didn’t fit the nuclear family mold, according to Pollard. “Society’s hard,” said Bullock during their interview. “Society still, as open-minded as we’ve become, has
these rules that quietly say: ‘This is the way it goes.’ They’re saying: ‘It’s a man and a woman, and then you have a baby, and that’s the family.’ I go: ‘Oh my god, I’m a single parent. With a child. How am I…’ I felt less than. I felt: ‘I’m not the complete package.’ And then I realized…this is the complete package.”
However, the negativity and criticism directed toward women in her profession still troubles Bullock. In an interview with E! News, the Oscar winner divulged that it’s something she’s cognizant of as she’s trying to teach her children how to treat other people. “I feel like it’s become hunting season in how women are attacked,” she said. “And it’s not because of who we are as peo-

ple, it’s because of how we look, or our age,” she said. “I’m embarrassed about it, because my son’s getting ready to grow up in this world, and I’m trying to raise a good man who values and appreciates women.”
Named as the World’s Most Beautiful Woman 2015 by People Magazine, Bullock has said that she has a circle of peers in the industry for support. “You’d be surprised at the love that you have. In our crazy industry, the women have bonded together, and it has sort of become this tribe of trying to take care of each other and be there for each other in a way, because the minute you step out it is an onslaught.”
Yet, health and fitness still remain a priority for Bullock, who had to be in tip-top shape for the 2013 film Gravity, a film that generated more than $500 million at the box office. For her role, she had to be in amazing condition to accomplish the grueling wirework required to mimic movements in zero gravity. “I pushed my body to the extreme. Strength-wise, I had to know I could do anything [the director] asked of me at any given point, so not a day went by that we didn’t train,” said Bullock

during a news conference to promote the film.
According to Shape Magazine, Bullock has said that variety––dance, cardio, yoga, and Pilates keeps her regime fresh and prevents boredom. “People ask, ‘How do you actresses do it?’ Um, they pay us to do this in order to look good on film,” she’s joked.
But, the most important thing to her is not looking good or staying a box office goddess, it’s making a happy home for her adopted family and living outside the box of cultural expectations. As Bullock recently responded to a question about fostering and adopting: “In this lifetime we are lucky, because we can make the family that makes us happiest. Sometimes you just need to go out and find it and bring it home!”

ADDING ADULT CHILD TO ACCOUNT PROVES COSTLY
By Craig Watson
When Gail reached age 75, she took her children’s advice and put their names on her checking account so they could pay her bills in case anything ever happened to her. Her children were happily married to sweet spouses that Gail trusted. The teller at the bank was very helpful and Gail followed the teller’s suggestion regarding how to put her children’s names on her account. Gail had about $3,000 in her checking account, which represented all of her life savings.
A few years later, her son lost his job in management and had to take a lower paying job with the same company. He was glad to have a job of any kind in the anemic U.S. economy. Tragically, Gail’s son and his wife got a divorce due to the financial stress caused by the job change. Gail was sad to lose contact with her daughter-in-law who she really liked. Gail’s son and his wife had three children. The court awarded custody of the children to Gail’s daughter-in-law.
Unbeknownst to Gail, her son fell behind on his child support. The Texas Attorney General Child Support Division is charged with the responsibility of seizing assets from deadbeat fathers to provide court ordered child support for their children, regardless of the situation or consequences. The Child Support Division is a “super creditor” and they have rights that far exceed the norm. Their computer matched the name or social security number of Gail’s son to her account. Early one month, right after Gail’s social security check was deposited in her account, without prior notice to Gail, the Texas Attorney General seized the entire account balance in order to pay the unpaid child support owed by Gail’s son. The seizure caused several of Gail’s outstanding checks to bounce. Even though her son had never made a deposit to the account and all of the money in it was Gail’s, which she needed to pay her bills, Gail lost all of her money. Gail had to depend on her daughter to give her money
to pay for her rent, utilities, food, medicine, insurance and other necessities. The entire experience was extremely embarrassing, humiliating and stressful for Gail not to mention costly. Needless to say, the bank teller who helped Gail set up her account did not warn Gail that something like this could happen.
Gail could have accomplished her goals and avoided this disaster if she had consulted with an estate planning attorney instead of listening to advice from her children and a bank teller. An estate planning attorney would have advised Gail to use a Power of Attorney (POA) to allow her children to pay her bills if she ever became ill and unable to manage her affairs. The terms of the POA would have authorized Gail’s children to use the POA to access her account only for her benefit. By putting her children on her account, Gail inadvertently gave them access to her account and they could have legally withdrawn funds from the account for themselves without notice to Gail. Gail could have revoked the POA at any time without approval of her children so she would have remained in complete control. On the other hand, if Gail had wanted to take her children’s name off of her account, the bank would have required Gail to get the approval of her children in order to remove them as signers on her account! Also, if Gail had used a POA, her account would have remained solely in her name, which would have prevented her son’s creditor from seizing it. Finally, the cost of a POA would have been far, far less than the amount she lost by trusting the advice of an unqualified bank teller.
This is a true story. The names have been changed to protect the client’s identity. It is a common occurrence in the writer’s law practice to see parents put their children’s names on accounts with balances much larger than Gail’s. With respect to your estate plan, you have worked a lifetime and made great sacrifices to accumulate your assets. Whether you have a lot or a little, you will benefit greatly by seeking the advice and counsel of an experienced attorney who concentrates his practice in estate planning.
Craig Watson’s legal practice is focused on Estate and Tax Planning, Probate, Guardianships, Elder Law and Corporate Law. Formerly a CPA, he has over 25 years of experience as an attorney. He can be reached by calling 903-813-8500 or at craigwatsonlaw.com.

A NEW YEAR WITH NEW SERVICES
AT THE REHABILITATION CENTER
With the start of a New Year, The Rehabilitation Center on Hillcrest Avenue in Sherman brings a myriad of fresh programs to promote a new you while continuing to build on its commitment to serving the community by providing exceptional pediatric physical, occupational, and speech programs.
This year, TRC brings an expansion of adult services with the development of specialized orthopedic services in Hand Therapy and Complex Shoulder Rehabilitation, as well as treatment of Lumbopelvic Pain, including Pelvic Floor Dysfunction for men and women. These programs, designed by our Physical Therapist, Dr. Colleen Grafa, who is a Board-Certified Orthopedic Specialist through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS), are unique and compliment traditional physical therapy.
A hand therapist is an occupational therapist or physical therapist who, through advanced study and experience, specializes in treating individuals with conditions affecting the hands and upper extremity. A qualified hand therapist can evaluate and treat any problem related to the upper extremity. The hand therapist can effectively treat and rehabilitate the patient through post-operative rehabilitation, preventative, non-operative or conservative treatment or industry consultation. The therapist works closely with the physician and patient to provide a continuum of care. This often starts within days of the injury or surgery right through the patient’s return to work and/or a productive lifestyle.
Some benefits to the Hand Therapy and Complex Shoulder Rehabilitation Programs include: Accurate assessments, immediate care and effective treatment to reduce treatment time. A continuum of care eliminates the need for multiple medical providers. Faster recovery results in decreased medical costs. Functional outcomes ensure a faster return to work and productive lifestyles.
Common pre- and post- surgical hand conditions treated at TRC include:
• Basal joint (base of the thumb) arthritis
• Carpal Tunnel
• Trigger Finger
• De Quervain’s Tendinosis
• Dupuytren’s Contracture Release
• Tendon and nerve repairs
Shoulder conditions we treat include:
• Shoulder Sports Injuries
• Shoulder Fractures
• Rotator Cuff Repair
• Instability and Labral Injuries
• Biceps Labral and Biceps Pulley Injuries
• Total Shoulder Replacement
• Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement
In continuing to bring about the best treatments and practices that meet the needs of the community, The Rehabilitation Center is also introducing help for lower back pain in connection with Pelvic Floor Dysfunction.
While low back pain associated with Pelvic Floor Dysfunction occurs more in women than in men, many men also suffer from PF dysfunction.
TRC’s Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Program treats pelvic floor disorders and lumbopelvic pain in both men and women and provides pre- and postnatal musculoskeletal care. We work with you to optimize function, restore healthy and functional pelvic floor muscles, and alleviate pain.
Common conditions and diagnoses include:
• Birthing injuries
• Constipation
• Gynecological or breast cancer survivorship
• Painful intercourse (dyspareunia)
• Pelvic health in pregnancy
• Pelvic pain
• Pelvic organ prolapse
• Pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy
• Post-prostatectomy pelvic floor dysfunction
• Pre- and postnatal care
• Tailbone pain (coccydynia)
• Testicular pain
• Urinary or fecal incontinence
• Urinary frequency
• Urinary urgency
Not all therapies need to be directed toward correcting or healing injuries. This year, we are introducing several programs to promote overall mind and body wellness with the introduction of both yoga and Pilates programs. The Rehabilitation Center is excited to be the only center in the area to promote health through Ability™ Pilates and Yoga and is the area’s only dedicated Mind-Body studio with certified teachers through the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) and Yoga Alliance (YA). These classes will help stretch the mind and body to new levels by providing expert instruction on proper stretch, flexibility, and alignments, while helping to focus and quiet the mind, building a better, stronger, healthier you.
In partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, The Rehabilitation Center is opening its doors on the first Thursday of every month to a new no-charge support group for caregivers of loved ones with dementia or Alzheimer’s related conditions. You are not alone! Peer Support for Caregivers will meet at 6:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month in the conference room of TRC. Trained facilitators will be there to lend support, offer resources, and tips on navigating the complex world of caring for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients. No preregistration is need, and this group session is free.

A PROCESS TO THE PROMISE
We recently remodeled a large house. The home had been vacant for a few years and there was a lot of differed maintenance. None of the kitchen appliances worked. The water heaters were leaking. The home was in desperate need of updates. However, the house had been staged to appear in better shape. When we peeled back the layers, there was even more work to be done. But isn’t that always the case in home renos? Isn’t that always the way it is in life?
I find the symbolism used in the Bible both fascinating and sometimes funny. Proverbs 24: 3,4 says, “By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” In spiritual terms this is saying, there’s a process. I’m going to be really honest with you, I’m not very patient. I’m not patient in spiritual progression any more than I am in natural progression.
Our house should have been finished in a few months. The home is large, we remodeled everything but the master. We decided to save that for last and live in there while we remodeled. I don’t advise this for anyone. The dust and paint fumes make their way through the air vents. Eating take out every night gets old. But, it’s only a few months, right? Between issues with contractors and additional work it went on for almost five months and cost several thousand dollars more than we expected. Also, during this time we had several other struggles and various trials come up. I wasn’t able to sleep very well. One night when I was crying out to God for some relief He brought me to the words from Hebrews 10:36, “You have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.” “WHAT?! I have need of endurance,” I thought.
This has been a season of war for so many people I know. Full on assault! And like me, many have grown weary. So, I’d like to write a word to encourage the faint of heart. There is a time for war and a time for peace. There is a time for endurance and a time to receive the promise. I liken it to being pregnant. Even if you’re a man you have watched
By Michelle Wallace
women struggle with changes that come during pregnancy. There is stretching, there is a preparation that comes to get ready to bring new life in the world. And pregnancy can be painful, especially in the third trimester. But there is a baby to look forward to. There comes the day of transition where you go from being pregnant to holding the promise.
The recent Super Bowl was interesting. It was a low scoring game. Many said it was a little boring. But I can assure you there was an intense process and preparation to the promise. The final score was 13 to 3. Some people are tired
of seeing the Patriots win. I’m personally in it for the commercials. But here’s something else I observed, the final winning number was 13. That number can represent something unlucky, but not for the Patriots. For them it represented the promise fulfilled. Interestingly, the number represented a promise fulfilled for some in the Bible too. Maybe you’ve heard the story of Abraham. God promised Abraham and Sarah a child. She was beyond child bearing years and didn’t believe God could deliver on the promise. She had need of endurance. Instead, Sarah decided to help God out. She gave her maidservant to her husband to conceive a baby. But if she just would have waited a little longer, she would supernaturally give birth to Issac. Ok, maybe it wasn’t just a little longer, there were actually 13 years between Ishmael and Issac.
Joseph had a dream. He made the mistake of sharing it with his brothers. Maybe you’ve had a dream that others despised. It’s especially hard when you share it with family and friends who should be happy for you, instead they throw you in a pit. Jealousy can make people do crazy things. And it was 13 years before Joseph would receive the promise. Thirteen long years until he became second in command in the palace.
There are times when things go on for so long, we simply give up. Let these stories encourage you. The process may be long, we have need of endurance, but there is a day when the promise is fulfilled.
In the meantime, I’m learning that I can actually enjoy the process. How do we do that? We keep in mind there is a promise on the way. And while we wait we can be thankful for what the process is producing in us. James 1 says to consider it pure joy, whenever you face trials of many kinds, be-
cause you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. I’m sure Sarah wasn’t rejoicing in the process. She was too busy taking matters into her own hands. While Joseph showed great endurance through the trials, I bet there were times he questioned the dream. We can have a dream and believe it should come to fruition immediately, but life isn’t always like that. But rest assured, if God promised, He will do it. He’s not a man that He should lie, and He always keeps His promise.
Sometimes, the longer we wait, the greater the struggle; the greater the glory at stake. I’m not sure what your dreams or promises are or how long you’ve waited, but I can tell you from experience, it’s always worth it. Jesus said, “For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross.” He was willing to suffer because he looked forward to what the suffering would produce. What was the joy set before Him? What was the promise? It was me, it was you.

Straight Teeth,
I decided to start Fastbraces after my lower permanent retainer broke off. My teeth shifted very quickly, and I wanted a fast fix! I was only in my Fastbraces for 6 weeks and my teeth were perfect! There was minimal discomfort and it was so easy. I could not have been happier with how my smile turned out after Fastbraces treatment!
-J Clemons
Have you always wanted to have straight teeth? Have your teeth shifted since you wore braces as a teenager? Are you ready to have a smile that you are proud of? Our office is excited to introduce you to FASTBRACES. The FASTBRACES patented technology enables dental providers to grow bone in order to straighten teeth quickly and avoid tooth extraction or sometimes even surgery. One of the key benefits to using FASTBRACES for straightening teeth is that patients see a noticeable difference in a matter of days and some patients are in FASTBRACES for as little as 100 days. With traditional old-style braces, the first year is usually spent moving the crowns of the teeth and the roots are brought to an upright position in the second year. Unlike traditional braces, FASTBRACES patented brackets allow the process of straightening the roots of the teeth to the upright position from the beginning of treatment. Patients using the FASTBRACES system report decreased pain compared to traditional braces. The speedy alignment of FASTBRACES assists dentists by making some procedures less difficult such as crowns or implants. FASTBRACES are also more affordable that traditional braces. Please call our office to schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our dentists.

How Does TAVR Work?
The minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedure (TAVR) is very different from the traditional openheart procedure that is normally recommended for patients with severe aortic stenosis.
During TAVR the damaged valve is replaced via a narrow tube catheter without the need for open-heart surgery. The device is typically inserted via an artery in the leg and then guided through a catheter to the arteries and into the heart. Once in place, the device expands over the old valve and takes over the original valve’s function to allow the blood to flow out of the heart correctly.
Who May Benefit from TAVR?
Some patients may not be good candidates for standard open-heart surgery to treat aortic stenosis. These patients usually are of an older age, have frailty (weakness) and/ or other medical conditions that could make traditional “open” valve replacement surgery dangerous and even life threatening.
Aortic stenosis is diagnosed as mild, moderate and severe (depending on the degree of damage to the heart valve.) For patients diagnosed by a physician as having symptomatic intermediate or severe aortic stenosis, the less invasive surgical procedure transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) may be recommended. TAVR may also be recommended for patients who previously had the more invasive aortic valve replacement but continue to experience issues.
What Is Aortic Stenosis?
Aortic stenosis is one of the most common and serious valve disease problems, affecting individuals mostly as they age. The condition results from the buildup of calcium deposits on the valve leaflets, or scarring. These issues cause damage to the heart valve and prevent or restrict normal blood flow through the body.
Symptoms of Aortic Stenosis May Include:
• Breathlessness
• Chest pain, pressure or tightness
• Palpitations or a feeling of heavy, pounding or noticeable heartbeats
• Decline in activity level or reduced ability to engage in normal activities, requiring mild exertion
• Heart murmur diagnosed upon examination by a physician
Aortic stenosis becomes worse over time. Age-related aortic stenosis usually begins after age 60, but often does not show symptoms until a person is in their 70s and older. Individuals may not complain or be bothered by symptoms until the amount of blood flow has become significantly reduced. *
If you notice a decline in routine physical activity or significant fatigue in yourself or a loved one, you may want to check with your healthcare provider for the possibility of reduced heart function. Early treatment may help to reverse or slow down the progress of aortic stenosis. *
Recovering from TAVR
In most cases, recovery time after having the TAVR procedure is faster. Patients typically spend an average of 3 to 5 days in the hospital following the procedure. Improved heart function, relief of symptoms and reduced pain and anxiety have also been reported. *
The TAVR procedure is performed by an experienced and specialized care team of interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and imaging specialists, and has been shown to improve quality of life in patients who otherwise would have limited choices.

WHAT TO SAY: PART ONE
Courtesy Dannel Funeral Home
Many of us search for the right words to provide comfort to a grieving family. We want to say something meaningful.
Charles Dannel, fifth-generation owner of Dannel Funeral Home, reassures us that a simple statement like, “I’m so sorry for your loss,” is sufficient. If you’re comfortable saying more, Charles suggests you mention something relational, like: “John was a wonderful man. We played golf together and I always enjoyed his company.”
It’s important to stay positive, when appropriate, and to the extent possible amid your own grief. “Your smile and affirming words will bring comfort to the grieving family,” says Charles. “I realize it seems counterintuitive, but if you can, offer the
bereaved family members a warm smile. It’s a nonverbal message that demonstrates your good memories associated with the deceased.”
Your presence is the most meaningful thing you can offer. “Don’t agonize over what to say,” says Charles. “If you can be a light, the family will remember and be grateful.”
The grieving family may not recall the exact words of what was said, but they will appreciate that you were there.
A Note About Privacy
It’s a delicate subject. Occasionally, there is curiosity about how a person died, especially if it was unexpected. Some families choose to be open about circumstances and causes, but others elect not to do so. In either situation,
Charles says it’s best to be guided by the family, honoring their wishes and their privacy.
“Even though you have concerns, avoid asking the family what happened,” Charles says. “Focus on supporting them in their loss and grief, whether or not you know the full story. Your presence is a wonderful gift to the family. So is showing respect for their privacy.”

Words to Comfort
Those Who Grieve
“It’s surprising to many to know that staying positive, to the extent possible in the midst of your own grief, is a help to the family. By conveying a depth of caring and empathy, your smile and affirming words bring great comfort.”
Charles Dannel
It’s also hard to know what to say if you’re receiving heartfelt expressions of sympathy. Obviously, it’s a difficult time for families, and fatigue can affect our ability to be as articulate as we’d like. In our next article in Living Well Magazine, Charles shares thoughts about how to respond. Take care of your family. We’ll take care of everything else.

Hearing aids are pretty sturdy devices in spite of their complex electronic components. They’re shock resistant and well-protected against moisture and humidity. But unlike mobile phones and computer tablets such as an iPad, many hearing instruments don’t come with built in GPS locating devices (although some of the newer models made for iPhone hearing aids can make use of the Find my Hearing Aid app through the phone, assuming the hearing aid is still turned on and the battery is good). So, they can get lost!
We recommend that you never wrap your hearing aids in tissue paper. Hearing aid users have thrown the tissue paper away and even flushed it down the toilet and there go
One woman replaced her lost hearing aids, only to find the originals behind the couch two years later. When we have a patient call us to inform us that they’ve lost their hearing aids, we usually encourage them to look for several days or a week before filing a claim or purchasing new. Most hearing aids come with an initial loss/damage policy included in their warranty (typically a one-time loss and will have a deductible apply).
Hearing aids have been left in pockets and then put through the washing machine. We don’t recommend it, but it’s not unusual for hearing aids to survive the wash and spin cycle. And beware of small animals. Some dogs like the smell of the acrylic casing (and many can often smell their “human” on the hearing aids) and will chew up hearing aids if within reach. Also, if a hearing aid is left on, the exceptional hearing of a dog can hear it feeding back and then find it and react to it––as in chew it!
So, take good care of your hearing aids. And, remember, the safest place for them is in your ears (or case or dehu-

YOU SHOULD 3 TAKE EVERYDAY
ANTIOXIDANTS
In the health and wellness area, there are words that make us scratch our heads at times. It is hard to figure out what everything means and more importantly if it pertains to us. Today I want to share with you a word that gets thrown around a lot when discussing health, “antioxidants.” Antioxidants should become some of your best friends if you are interested in pain management, cell health, and longevity.
Antioxidants
It all starts with a brief chemistry lesson. An atom is the smallest unit of life, and more than one atom creates a molecule; our bodies are made up of large molecules like proteins and fatty acids. In our bodies, in order to function, hundreds of chemical reactions are occurring, known as our metabolism.
During metabolism, molecules are broken down or built up. Stable molecules will
have the correct amount of electrons, but if a molecule loses an electron at the wrong time, it creates a free radical. Free radicals are not stable, and are capable of causing damage to cells, proteins, and even DNA. When cells are damaged, illness, aging, and pain are symptoms. So here is where the antioxidants come in; these guys actually go to free radical molecules and donate the needed electrons to them before they can cause damage!
If you think about it, antioxidants are like the man or woman at a festival with “FREE HUGS” written on their shirts or the volunteers handing out free meals to the homeless. They just want to serve and donate. They go around your body, repairing damage before it starts.
Why we need them
Our bodies actually need some free radicals and they are used in various pathways. When illness like cancer or heart
disease, pain, and inflammation occur, it is because free radicals have far surpassed antioxidant levels. When free radicals outnumber the antioxidants your body goes into a state of oxidative stress. With this imbalance can also come silent inflammation. Inflammation is your body’s natural immune response to injury or infection. If your body is stressed from a poor diet lacking antioxidants, then inflammation can stay turned on and cause harm.
Chronic oxidative stress and inflammation are the theories behind many chronic diseases. The paragraphs that follow will go over my top three recommended antioxidants to consume daily, along with a colorful whole food plant based diet.
Turmeric (Curcumin)
Called by some health experts as the “Natural Remedy of the Century” this supplement has big shoes to fill. This root herb has the ability to inhibit the COX-2

enzyme, an enzyme in our bodies responsible for activating our inflammatory response. So instead of using a pharmaceutical pain reliever, you can reach for an all-natural alternative. If you experience brain fogginess, aches and pains, or mood swings, these may be signs of systemic inflammation. Turmeric has been known in clinical trials to alleviate these symptoms.
Like many of you, I have aging parents. My mother just turned 60 and she has been troubled with severe back pain. She finally told herself she was going to stop taking Ibuprofen every day and try something else. We went through all her supplements and decided to put Turmeric at the top of her list. This natural supplement has been shown to decrease levels of a key marker of inflammation, CRP. Turmeric boosts the regeneration of brain stem cells creating more youthful brain function. It has even been shown in a clinical trial to encourage the immune system to clean out unwanted protein debris in the brain that causes cognitive decline.
Further it has the power to decrease cholesterol oxidation, which can lead to arterial clogs in the heart and blood vessel damage. Among the other benefits of this powerful antioxidant, it shows up as a joint pain reliever, effective at mood balancing, and has the potential to aid with proper digestion. Turmeric seems to be a preventative and regenerative supplement. Take it daily, along with black pepper extract and COQ10 for whole optimal benefit and effective absorption.
Ginger
This spice has been used in cooking and dishes for centuries but it also has some powerful medicinal qualities. As an expecting mother, I have reaped the benefits of ginger being an anti-nausea aid. This pungent spice is also a remarkable antioxidant. We learned before that cancer can occur due to damaged cells, but ginger contains a compound 6-gingerol that may be able to slow or even reverse cancer cell growth in prostate, pancreatic and ovarian cancers. More research needs to be done, but scientists seem positive about its anti-cancer benefits. Another great prop-

erty of ginger is it regulates and reduces blood sugar levels, something people with diabetes need especially.
If that wasn’t enough, because ginger acts as an antioxidant and therefore an anti-inflammatory, it has been applauded for its aid with menstruation discomfort, decreasing the pain and duration of symptoms.
This spice can also drastically help with osteoarthritis. Arthritis can arise at any age. The longer we put wear and tear on our bodies, the more likely our joints may suffer. Remember my 60-year-old mom I mentioned? Well she works herself silly, with yard work and housework; she still insists on mowing her own lawn! And even though these activities are great for her overall health, they do take a toll on joints. We found a turmeric supplement for her that also contains the ginger root extract with it. Ginger has been proven to reduce pain caused by common osteoarthritis. All together, this all-natural substance treats inflammation, assists with proper digestion, increases immune responses, reduces cholesterol and, like turmeric, stimulates brain function. Take this aromatic supplement daily to access its antioxidant power and
see the benefits first hand.
Amla (Indian Gooseberry Powder)
The last, but certainly not least, super antioxidant I recommend consuming every day is Indian gooseberry. It is hard to know where to start with this special antioxidant, so I will begin from head to toe (or maybe about to your colon)! Indian gooseberry also known as amla, has been known to enhance and strengthen hair, and prevent hair thinning and balding. This is attributed to the gooseberries’ rich carotene content, and again antioxidant (cell protecting) qualities.
This berry improves already-developed cataracts and decreases risk for macular degeneration. Gooseberries also support healthy immune function by increasing production of white blood cells, and supports strong bones by helping absorb calcium in the right ways. They also act as a diuretic and helps flush out toxins in the body. As long as you are maintaining proper fluid intake daily, this flushing property promotes healthy kidney function and can prevent urinary tract infections.
This fruit also prevents heart diseases by strengthening the heart muscles and therefore increasing circulation of blood. It can reduce cholesterol buildup and therefore prevent atherosclerosis. The Indian gooseberry can also act as a natural laxative to increase healthy bowel movements, and will help relieve diarrhea and dysentery.
Lastly, a wonderful quality about this supplement is the quantity of iron it contains, which promotes the creation of red blood cells. Since the berry also contains a high amount of vitamin C, the iron is readily absorbed in our bodies and is a great supplement for people on a plant based diet, who choose not to consume animal based iron.
At the end of the day, I want you to know that pain, discomfort, memory loss, tooth decay, excess wrinkles, dry skin, and chronic disease do not have to be symptoms of aging. We are in control of our bodies and can increase our longevity, manage pain and reduce chronic disease through the supplementation of antioxidants.

Radiofrequency ablation treatment now available for spin al tumor s
Minimally invasive technology, close to home
Brian Rose, MD, FAAOS
Orthopedic & Spine Surgeon
A treatment system specifically used for treating painful tumors that have spread to the spine from cancer in other parts of the body is now available at TMC. Orthopedic Spine Surgeon at Texoma Medical Center, Brian Rose, MD, FAAOS, says he has been treating patients for about two years.
The treatment serves a dual purpose. Dr. Rose states, “Radiofrequency ablation enables us to treat tumors using a small incision. Once the tumor is destroyed, we strengthen and stabilize the spine by filling in the affected areas with a cement-like material. The procedure usually takes less than one hour and following a short time in recovery, patients can go home.”
Dr Rose says that the person ’ s pain level is greatly reduced. For older patients with other health conditions, the minimal side effects are a plus. This often allows the patient to proceed with radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy without severe pain.
Enhancing treatment options for patients
The new treatment is an extension of kyphoplasty, a procedure already performed at Texoma Medical Center for patients with spinal pain due to compression fractures that result from osteoporosis “Kyphoplasty is a very similar procedure. The difference is that no ablation is needed. The patient’s vertebrae need support, so we fill any fractures or pockets with the cementlike substance, and patients can get relief fairly quickly,” says Dr Rose “Many patients who previously rated their pain as a ‘10’ tell us it dropped to a ‘2’. It’s exciting to be able to offer these solutions. We are trained to be as minimally invasive as possible, which equates to minimized pain and quicker recovery for the patient. These two procedures fall right in line with that ” ■
Individual results may vary There are risks associated with any surgical procedure. Talk with your doctor about these risks to find out if minimally invasive surgery is right for you

The“Scarless”Face Lift
By Pamela Hammonds
Eating right and exercising are great ways to stave off the inevitable signs of aging. But even if you’re devoted to wellness, over time your skin loses elasticity, bone and tissue deteriorate and hereditary factors become more pronounced.
North Texas residents can count themselves fortunate that nationally-known facial plastic surgeon Dr. Gregory D. Roberts is a short drive away. He’s refined a face lift technique, known as the “scarless” face lift, which allows patients to recover from surgery with virtually no visible scarring. The “scarless” face lift involves a series of surgical methods and meticulous precision that can help restore more natural, youthful facial features with virtually imperceptible signs of surgical intervention.
“My one guiding principle is that your cosmetic surgery looks natural,” said Dr. Roberts. “You should look refreshed and well-rested, never pulled.” Dr. Roberts takes the time necessary to meticulously place and close incisions,
ensuring that his patients’ incisions are virtually invisible, as well as helping to minimize bruising and quicken the healing process. Dr. Roberts and his staff are thorough and attentive before and after surgery, making sure each patient understands the procedure and recovery time.
Many of Dr. Roberts’ patients also find pleasing results with a non-surgical face lift alternative known as a Liquid Face Lift. Revolumizing the face with a Liquid Face Lift can be done alone or in conjunction with a face lift to restore natural, youthful volume and contours. Dr. Roberts appreciates that each patient is a unique individual with specific needs and expectations. “I like to spend time with each patient discussing options and determining what will produce the best and most consistent results to fit the patient’s goals and desires,” he said.
If your goal is smoother, clearer skin tone and texture, skin resurfacing with advanced lasers such as D.O.T. or Fraxel® can be a tremendous help, as well. For patients seeking more
comprehensive facial rejuvenation, Dr. Roberts might recommend an R-Lift, which integrates a “scarless” face lift (or other cosmetic surgery), as well as a liquid face lift and fractional laser resurfacing. “An R-Lift essentially blends the three R’s of facial rejuvenation,” said Dr. Roberts, “Repositioning (drooping skin), Revolumizing (flattened facial features) and Repairing (sun damaged skin).”
“There’s a tremendous amount of satisfaction that comes along with my work,” he said. “Seeing patients get positive results from their procedure, as well as seeing their renewed confidence, and then hearing the reaction of others in their lives is very fulfilling.”
Dr. Roberts’ procedures are performed at an AAAASF certified facility near George Bush Tollway and Preston in Plano, Texas. Read more here about what his patients say about him. View more before-and-after photos and review additional information at RobertsCosmeticSurgery.com.

Dr. Roberts’ patients love their results!
KM didn’t fully embrace the aging process and sought help to improve her appearance. During her consultation Dr. Roberts recommended upper and lower blepharoplasty (eye lifts) as well as a mini face lift. “I inherited drooping eyes from my dad, sagging jowls from my mother. But Dr. Roberts has completely changed that for me. Now I get comments even from strangers about how good my skin looks. Only my close friends know what I’ve had done, but I feel dramatically different. It’s helped my confidence and I’m definitely more comfortable when I’m face-to-face with people.”
At 51, JT worked to stay in shape but couldn’t stop the natural signs of aging. The sagging in her neck and jowl area started to bother her so much she no longer wore her hair off her face. “I feel young and wanted to look more youthful,” she said. After a mini face lift, she’s thrilled with the results.
“Not one person has said, ‘Did you have a face lift?’” she said. “But people do tell me how pretty my skin is. I didn’t want to overdo it or become obsessed with vanity, and what Dr. Roberts did is perfect. Everyone in his office was attentive, helpful and supportive. I’d definitely do it again.”
JR, 52, had a face lift, endoscopic brow lift and lower blepharoplasty performed in one procedure. “Before the surgery I looked tired and my jowl area and the skin around my mouth sagged,” she said. “Dr. Roberts spent a lot of time explaining everything and answering my questions. During my consultation, I saw a woman who’d had a face lift the day before, and you couldn’t see the incisions since they were in her hairline. After surgery, I was wearing a ponytail two weeks later and attended a work conference a week after that. No one could tell I’d just had surgery! To me, it’s so natural. I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Roberts and his staff.”

Each spring the North Georgia Town of Augusta comes alive as the Masters Golf Tournament comes to town. Eyes from around the globe are focused on Augusta National Golf Club as the best golfers from around the world take to the links, while lucky fans with Masters Golf Tournament Badges watch from the second cut of the fairway.
Masters Badges are available in an annual lottery. However, Badges are limited in number, making Badges or Masters Tickets hard to find. Golden Tickets has been securing Masters Golf Badges for more than 30 years, ensuring your time at the Masters is focused on golf and fun. Golden Tickets is also your choice for Masters Hospitality, which operates the 1018 Club, a world-class Masters Hospitality House just a stone’s throw from the main gates of the Augusta National Golf Club.
The Masters Tournament and Augusta National’s history go hand in hand. In 1931, Bobby Jones began to transform the old indigo plantation into a private club, with the idea of hosting a major golf tournament. The first Masters Tournament was in 1934 with Horton Smith taking the top spot. Unfortunately, he didn’t get the famous Masters Tournament Green Jacket, as it didn’t get awarded until 1949.
Golden Tickets knows the Masters Tournament and Augusta like no one else. We temporarily move from our Texas offices to Augusta Georgia during the months leading up to the Masters, and have staff that is permanently located next door to Augusta National Golf Club. Golden Tickets is your one-stop
Masters Golf Tournament with access to Masters Golf Badges, Masters Golf Hospitality at the 1018 Club, and Masters Golf Housing at Diamond Home Rentals.
The 1018 Club is a 9,000-square-foot oasis that makes a truly one-of-a-kind experience. As a 1018 Club guest, you’re in for a Masters experience like no other in Augusta. The food, the drinks, the service, and all the little extras represent the style, sophistication, and southern charm for which the tournament is famous.
From a relaxing massage and a cold towel to a fine cigar, it’s the little things that separate our service from other clubs. 1018 Club guests enjoy the Masters Tournament in the heart of the action, or back at the Club with their feet up. No worries. You won’t miss a second of play with HDTVs broadcasting the tournament from one of our five luxurious bar areas, and our 22 televisions. And that’s just the beginning.
Now let’s talk about celebrity Chef Kent Rathbun. A true Texas legend, he is equally well known nationally. From presidential inaugural balls, to the premier events in football and golf, to network TV appearances with celebrities of every stripe, Kent is one of the country’s go-to chefs when the focus is on great food and great times.
He began his professional career as an apprentice at Lo Bonne Auberge, a five-star French restaurant in Kansas City. From there he worked under some of the best chefs in the country with stints at Mr. B’s in New Orleans, Kansas City’s American Restaurant
and Milanos, Dallas’ Mansion on Turtle Creek, The Landmark, and the Warwick Melrose Hotel.
Kent established Abacus in 1997, winning just about every award in sight, including Bon Appétit’s Best of the Year. He was also awarded Four Diamonds by Mobil. Soon after, he added Jaspers to his resume, which featured the best of “gourmet backyard cuisine,” and another slew of awards followed. Not content to sit still––anyone whose has been around Kent knows his mind and body are in constant motion––he created a catering operation and his own exclusive line of products, designed for home cooks.
After you’ve packed away some delicious food and drink at the 1018 Club from the celebrity chef, you’ll need somewhere to retire for a good night’s rest.
Diamond Home Rentals specializes in Masters Housing. We work very hard to ensure a complete and satisfying experience for homeowners and golf patrons looking for Masters Private Housing. Unlike other events, it is an accepted and normal tradition for local residents to rent their homes during Masters Week. For guests and corporations attending the Masters, having a private home to stay in offers many benefits and advantages.
If you plan to attend the upcoming Masters Golf Tournament, we’re here to help you sleep better! With over 20 years experience in Masters Housing, we strive to put the right homeowners and leasers together, making the Masters Private Home Rental experience a successful and enjoyable one for all.

COMMUNICATING WITH A GRIEVING PERSON
By Kelly Lamkin, LBSW
When you ask someone, “How are you?” do you really want them to tell you the honest truth or are you waiting for the standard answer of “I’m fine”? What if they were honest and told you that they were having a bad day? What if they started to cry? What would you do?
I would stop what I am doing, sit them down so we are eye to eye, look them in the eye and give them permission to get it out. Depending on the situation I may hold their hand but no matter what I make sure I am present with them in that moment. In order to be present with a person you give your undivided attention to them, look them in the eyes, pay attention, listen, acknowledge what is being said verbally
and nonverbally and don’t put up any physical barriers between you and the other person.
When a grieving person is asked that question most times they want to bust out and talk but don’t because of the

thought, “No one has time to listen to me or they don’t care, they don’t want to listen to my problems.” It only takes a few minutes of your time to listen to a hurting, grieving heart. Wouldn’t you want someone to listen to you if the roles were reversed? Those moments spent with a grieving person can potentially be the most important moments of their lives. You may not even have to say many words because your presence will be all the person needs. Sitting in silence and listening to another person can be the best gift you can give to them and even to yourself. The look in a caring person’s eye can also warm a grieving person’s soul.
So remember, the next time you start to ask someone how they are, it could change their day and your day too!

WHAT ARE MESONUTRIENTS?
By Julie Alvira, MD, MBA
Trendy! We have heard about macros (big) and micronutrients (small) but now there are mesonutrients (in the inside or middle). Correction, the word might be new but mesonutrients have always been here. These are the middle players in the super foods with a specific benefit. They are the power source of the superfoods.
Let’s Review
Hype surrounds “superfoods.” The trendy name has been marketed successfully, resulting in booming sales.
According to the Merriam-Webster
Dictionary, certain food is coined as a superfood when it is rich in compounds considered beneficial to a person’s health. These superfoods can prevent diseases because they are full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and good fatty acids.
“Focus on a super plate, not just superfoods.”––Harvard School of Public Health
Some Mesonutrients
Remember that in order to have a healthy daily plan, it is important to practice variety and not just eat this or that food all the time and forget
about the others just because some are considered superfoods. The idea is to practice balance.
Curcumin: a powerhouse with anti-inflammatory properties found in turmeric. It is said that consuming this, combined with piperine, enhances the absorption of curcumin. Some individuals might experience indigestion, diarrhea or nausea. It may help improve symptoms of arthritis and depression.
Lycopene: a carotenoid and the pigment found in red and pink colored fruits and veggies. Tomatoes provide around 80% of lycopene. Research had shown
40 TEXOMA AREA Living Well Magazine | MARCH/APRIL 2019
that it protects the skin. When cooking tomatoes, the heat activates a usable form of lycopenes, but it can destroy other important vitamins such as vitamin C and E.
Note: The common carotenoids alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin are provitamin A carotenoids which can be converted to retinol. Lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene are NON provitamin A carotenoids and cannot convert to retinol (Oregon State University, 2016). Carotenoids found in the retina are lutein and zeaxanthin.
Anthocyanins: energy boosting compounds found in plant foods. They occur in plants in the form of glycosides. While they are abundant in blackberries, blue-
berries, strawberries, red and purple grapes, red wine, and eggplants, you can also find them in black plums and red cabbage. Research had shown it lowers the risk of death from cardiovascular disease due to reduction in arterial stiffness and blood pressure. Anthocyanins had been linked to memory enhancement and age-related decline of mental functioning.
Epigallocathecin gallate (EGCG): a catechin found in several teas including green tea, oolong, and white tea. Green tea is the major source and has several flavonoids including EGCG but this last one is the most significant. From most green tea brands, the one with the highest amount of EGCG is Teavana Green Tea Gyokuro with 86 mg. Research has
shown protective benefits against cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, and high blood pressure.
Berberine: an alkaloid compound that can be extracted from plants including shrubs called Berberis. It is said to help with blood sugar levels and prevention of metabolic syndrome. It has been used in Chinese medicine for years.
Saffronal: not a lot is known about this one but it comes from the famous spice saffron. Research has shown it can help with depression and libido.
While companies are marketing mesonutrients amounts for optimal levels and high strength doses, always make sure to consult your healthcare provider first.

15 WAYS TO AVOID THE FLU
By Rebecca Mann
Wash with soap and water.
Wash your hands often. Scrub for at least 20 seconds or more. When you wash your hands, make sure to scrub all areas of your hands––even the tops and under your fingernails. Singing the Happy Birthday song will help make sure you are washing long enough.
Avoid shaking hands.
During cold and flu season, people will understand that you would rather not shake their hands and they will appreciate the gesture.
Getting exercise.
When working out, be sure to wipe down all equipment that you use before you use it. Yes, we should all wipe it down after we use the machines, but not everyone follows
this rule. It’s best to be on the side of caution. If you are feeling sick, stick to moderate exercise.
Avoid crowds and sick people.
In the early stages of a flu or cold, people may not be aware that they are sick. It is best to try and avoid crowed areas––this is important especially for babies and the elderly.
Cover your mouth.
When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth with a tissue. If you don’t have a tissue available, cough or sneeze into the bend of your arm. Make sure to throw away the tissue and wash your hands.
Sleep well.
Getting enough rest––at least seven to nine hours of sleep a night––can help keep your immune system strong. If you do get a cold or the flu, sleeping will help your body fight against the virus.
Eating healthy.
Eating nutritious, colorful foods will help keep your immune system healthy. Make sure and get some protein in your diet to help boost your immune system.
42 TEXOMA AREA Living Well Magazine | MARCH/APRIL 2019
Keeping your surroundings clean.
Wiping down doorknobs, faucet handles and counters with antibacterial wipes or spray will help keep the flu at bay. Don’t forget those television remotes. Other areas that you may not have considered are shopping carts, public pens, and self check out terminals.
Use hand sanitizer.
Sometimes soap and water are not convenient. Carry alcohol-based hand sanitizer with you, that way you will always be able to disinfect your hands.
Watch your hands.
Don’t put your hands around your face. Rubbing your eyes or biting your nails are great ways for the germs to get inside your body.
Stay hydrated.
Drink lots of fluids, especially water, and avoid caffeinated drinks.
Clean personal items.
One of the most common things that we use need to be wiped down––our cell phones. Don’t use other people’s cell phones during flu season.
Decrease
stress.
Keeping stress at bay can help your immune system stay strong. Taking deep breaths, meditation or doing activities that you enjoy can help to reduce your stress levels.
Avoid contact.
Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick. Avoid public places like the mall, theaters, or the grocery store at busy times.
Stay away.
If you have a family member in your house that is sick, don’t share linens, utensils or dishes. Use a face mask and gloves if you need to care for your loved one.
Remember that you can spread the flu even if you don’t feel sick. And if you do get the flu or a cold, stay home and take care of yourself. Get seven to nine hours of sleep a night (or more!) If you need anything, don’t leave the house. Call on a friend or family member to run your errand so that you can get rest and so you don’t spread germs to other people. Lastly, enjoy some warm chicken soup!

Innovative Lenses Provide a Greater Range of Vision After Cataract Surgery
Courtesy Key-Whitman Eye Center
In July 2016, the FDA approved the Symfony® intraocular lens, the first lens of its kind to offer extended depth of focus for cataract patients. Throughout clinical trials, researchers found the new lens consistently provided improved visual acuity at near, intermediate and far distances, than previous multifocal lens technology.
Key-Whitman Eye Center is thrilled to provide this new advancement for cataract surgery patients because Symfony offers the advantages of monofocal lens implants with no disadvantages some patients experience with multifocal lenses.
As Dr. Whitman explains, “Symfony was designed to reduce the weaknesses found in other multifocal lenses. The goal was to create a lens to treat vision loss that would be very strong for intermediate vision, where most of our life is now (computer work, tablets, etc.), while maximizing distance vision and providing good near or reading vision as well.”
Symfony addresses side effects and can resolve astigmatism.
Although cataract patients have had multifocal lens options for many years now, some patients experienced side effects that didn’t generally occur with traditional monofocal lenses – specifically halos and glare.
“The clinical studies revealed that the amount of halo and glare with Symfony was similar to a standard lens as opposed to a high-technology multifocal lens, which is pretty impressive. The new lenses also come in a toric or astigmatic correcting model, so we can treat astigmatism with the lens at the same time,” Dr. Whitman states.
Are you a good candidate for the Symfony IOL?
Throughout an eye health exam, the eye doctor will implement tests to decide if your eyes are healthy enough to go
through laser cataract surgery using a lens implant like Symfony. According to Dr. Whitman, “Most people with normal, healthy eyes – and even most patients who have had LASIK surgery – should be good candidates for laser cataract surgery at Key-Whitman with Symfony intraocular lenses.”
Who is not a good candidate for Symfony?
“Folks with unhealthy eyes, retina problems, macular degeneration, or scarring in the front part of the eye on the cornea, those patients may not be good candidates for the procedure. Unfortunately, they may have limitations in their vision where they won’t experience the full benefits of the lens,” says Dr. Whitman.
Not a candidate for Symfony?
Dr. Whitman’s top advice for individuals looking for vision correction – cataract surgery, LASIK eye surgery, intraocular contact lenses, etc. – is to turn to an eye health practitioner who offers the full spectrum of choices.
As Dr. Whitman describes, “At Key-Whitman, we offer a full range of the latest technologies, so we can provide a solution that maximizes each patient’s individual vision correction needs. For example, patients with certain eye conditions may benefit from options such as Crystalens® multifocal lenses or traditional aspheric optic lenses that can deliver the best quality of vision without side effects to any ongoing eye disease.”
In addition to Symfony and Crystalens lens implants, Key-Whitman Dallas offers cataract surgery patients other advanced lens implant choices, including:
• TrulignTM accommodative lenses.
• Tecnis® multifocal lenses.
• AcrySoft® IQ ReSTOR® lens implants to treat presbyopia and more.
• Symfony candidates can save on drops with No-or-Low Drop Laser Cataract Surgery, too.
48 TEXOMA AREA Living Well Magazine | MARCH/APRIL 2019
The Symfony procedure is exactly the same as any other type of cataract surgery Dr. Whitman performs. It’s effortless to go through, and patients don’t feel any eye displeasure during surgery. Depending on how fast the patient heals, within a few days or a week, vision generally improves rapidly.
“The No-or-Low Drop Laser Cataract Surgery option can be used with the Symfony lens and offers patients two options. One, at the end of the procedure, we can actually instill the anti-inflammatory and antibiotic medication in the eye, so there is decreased usage and expense of eye drops.
“For patients who are not candidates for the No-Drop option, we can prescribe a combination drop that’s much less expensive than typical prescription drops, which can cost hundreds of dollars. Plus, with the Low-Drop option, you only have to use the drops a few times a day,” explains Dr. Whitman.

New Hope Is Now Available for Cardiac Patients
Patients with severe aortic stenosis (a narrowing of the heart’s aortic valve, which makes the heart work harder to pump blood through the body) now have a new treatment option at the Texoma Heart Institute at TMC. TAVR is an advanced heart valve replacement procedure and offers a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open-heart surgery.
How Does TAVR Work?
During Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) a collapsible aortic heart valve is inserted through an artery in the leg and then guided through a catheter to the heart. The device then expands and takes over the original valve’s function to allow oxygen-rich blood to flow efficiently out of the heart.
