EXPERIENCE MATTERS
Not all doctors are created equal. And, in the case of orthopedic surgeon Charles Toulson, MD, MBA, that’s readily apparent. Board-certifid and fellowship-trained, Dr. Toulson’s specialties and interests include adult hip and knee reconstruction, adult hip and knee revisions, and state-ofthe-art robotic-assisted joint replacement.
SPRING AND SAM HOUSTON
Armed with an impeccable educational pedigree, he’s pioneered minimally invasive surgery techniques that result in outstanding patient results. If that weren’t enough, Dr. Toulson has also performed more robotic-assisted joint replacement procedures than any other surgeon in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and paved the path for two major hospitals in North Texas to achieve the elite status of being accredited as Joint Replacement Centers of Excellence. When you compare Dr. Toulson’s orthopedic experience to other doctors in his fild, it’s clear that experience matters and is what has led him to being regarded by his patients and peers as one of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the country, if not the world. Read about this exceptional doctor and how he can help your hips and knees regain their youthful movement on page 8.
You can also see the dramatic effects of experience when it comes to actor Sean Penn. The double-Oscar winner has dedicated his life to honing his acting craftand it shows. The characters he’s inhabited over many decades in film have become increasingly intense and nuanced, which has led to more and more accolades Penn’s earned over the years.
For Penn, life is much more than playing a character. In his eyes, to live means to participate in life by speaking up for others and acting—not only on screen but by taking action on political and social changes globally. His humanitarian activism is well documented and further illustrates his experiences helping others matter. While it’s well known that Penn personally was on the ground helping others after Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti earthquake, this past year he and his non-profit have helped Ukraine and neighboring countries providing humanitarian relief to those devastated by fatalities and the war. Turn to page 24 to learn more.
For most of us, experience can also impact reaching a goal. If we’ve had positive experiences in the past sticking with plans to reach specificgoals and expectations, we’re more likely to get a good result. The converse is also true. With that in mind, writer Lindy Rogers offers helpful tips and tricks to change your mindset and experience with setting and reaching goals on page 32. Adopting a different perspective and getting enthusiastic about the process is the fist step, as she details in her article, which is the perfect read as we head into 2023!
Be well!

ORTHOPEDIC EXCELLENCE
Dr. Toulson has greatly impacted orthopedic services across North Texas. He founded Alpha Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and is looking forward to providing orthopedic care when he joins Texas Joint Institute in February 2023. Texas Joint Institute is a comprehensive orthopedic practice with locations in Dallas, Frisco, Plano, and new locations opening soon in McKinney and Sherman, Texas.
When Texas Joint Institute began, it brought together two leading orthopedic surgeons to address the bone and joint needs of patients across the DFW Metroplex. Dr. Cyrus Abbaschian and Dr. Donald W Hohman brought their immense surgical talent to the new officlocated in Medical City Dallas to handle complex joint reconstruction, diagnose and treat bone and softtissue sarcomas, and handle an entire spectrum of surgical and non-surgical orthopedic services. Well known for their ability to handle even the most difficult cases, the doctors continue to deliver excellent care to patients around Dallas-Fort Worth and beyond.
A PIONEER IN MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY TECHNIQUES
Known for pioneering minimally invasive surgery techniques for hip and knee replacements, including the anterior supine hip replacement surgery, Dr. Toulson’s anterior approach allows patients to immediately bend their hip freely and bear full weight after their surgery. Ths surgical technique allows him to replace a hip joint without detaching muscle from the pelvis or femur during surgery and typically results in rapid recovery times for patients. Patients are able to walk comfortably without a cane or walker in just one to two days following surgery, according to Dr. Toulson.
Dr. Toulson was the fist surgeon in the area to perform a direct anterior hip replacement with robotic assistance. Dr. Toulson also completed the fist-ever, total knee replacement for both of a patient’s knees bilaterally (simultaneously) using Robotic-Assisted Technology.
The robot assists Dr. Toulson by improving precision during the surgery. “What’s critical is the robot will not permit me to deviate outside of the plan that we have instituted in the very beginning of surgery,” details Dr. Toulson. “As the surgeon, I’m still doing the surgery, the robot is just allowing me to do it in a more precise manner.”
“Ths 3D technology allows me to see the orientation, alignment, rotation, and actual size of the implant that we will be using. So, I can actually see with 3D technology what the implant looks like and I can make adjustments in surgery to balance the ligaments inside of the knee,” Dr. Toulson continues.
SUCCESSFUL OUTCOMES
“When patients come to see me with arthritis, we often try non-operative means of treatment before we talk about surgery,” says Dr. Toulson. Once non-operative options for hip or knee arthritis are exhausted, Dr. Toulson sits down with patients and details the benefits and the risks of a total joint replacement.
One of Dr. Toulson’s recent patients was suffering with severe arthritis in her knees. “I was having severe pain in my knees, I had difficulty going up and down stairs, steps, even the curb. It hurt so bad to walk, even short distances,” she says. The results of her bilateral (both) knee replacement procedure have been life changing. “ The surgery went wonderfully. I haven’t had any problems and every day it gets better and better. I can walk up the steps now getting into my home,” she says.
Highlights of success stories and the joy his patients express at the outcome of their hip or knee replacement surgeries—and how it’s changed their lives—are documented on his website, drcharlestoulson. com, with videos and moving testimonials.
AWARDS AND ACCOLADES
It’s no surprise that Dr. Toulson has been named among the Best Doctors in Dallas for orthopedic surgery by D Magazine nine times and among the Best Orthopedic Surgeons in Collin County by D Magazine six times. He’s also been awarded best orthopedic surgeon for nine years running by Living Magazine, along with being named best orthopedic surgeon for the past five years by Living Well Magazine

Adding Adult Child to Account Proves Costly
By CRAIG WATSON
When Gail reached age 75, she took her children’s advice and put their names on her checking account, so they could pay her bills in case anything ever happened to her. Her children were happily married to sweet spouses that Gail trusted. The teller at the bank was very helpful and Gail followed the teller’s suggestion regarding how to put her children’s names on her account. Gail had about $3,000 in her checking account which represented all of her life savings.
A few years later, her son lost his job in management and had to take a lower paying job with the same company. He was glad to have a job of any kind in the anemic U.S. economy. Tragically, Gail’s son and his wife got a divorce due to the fiancial stress caused by the job change. Gail was sad to lose contact with her daughter-in-law who she really liked. Gail’s son and his wife had three children. The court awarded custody of the children to Gail’s daughter-in-law.
Unbeknownst to Gail, her son fell behind on his child support. The Texas Attorney General Child Support Division is charged with the responsibility of seizing assets from dead beat fathers to provide court ordered child support for their children, regardless of the situation or consequences. The Child Support Division is a “super creditor” and they have rights that far exceed the norm. Their computer matched the name or social security number of Gail’s son to her account. Early one month, right after Gail’s social security check was deposited in her account, without prior notice to Gail, the Texas Attorney General seized the entire account balance in order to pay the unpaid child support owed by Gail’s son. The seizure caused several of Gail’s outstanding checks to bounce. Even though her son had never made a deposit to the account and all of the money in it was Gail’s, which she needed to pay her bills, Gail lost all of her money. Gail had to depend on her daughter to give her money to pay for her rent, utilities, food, medicine, insurance and other necessities.
The entire experience was extremely embarrassing, humiliating and stressful for Gail not to mention costly. Needless to say, the bank teller who helped Gail set up her account did not warn Gail that something like this could happen.
Gail could have accomplished her goals and avoided this disaster if she had consulted with an estate planning attorney instead of listening to advice from her children and a bank teller. An estate planning attorney would have advised Gail to use a Power of Attorney (POA) to allow her children to pay her bills if she ever became ill and unable to manage her affirs. The terms of the POA would have authorized Gail’s children to use the POA to access her account only for her benefit. By putting her children on her account, Gail inadvertently gave them access to her account and they could have legally withdrawn funds from the account for themselves without notice to Gail. Gail could have revoked the POA at any time without approval of her children, so she would have remained in complete control. On the other hand, if Gail had wanted to take her children’s name offof her account, the bank would have required Gail to get the approval of her children in order to remove them as signers on her account! Also, if Gail had used a POA, her account would have remained solely in her name which would have prevented her son’s creditor from seizing it. Finally, the cost of a POA would have been far, far less than the amount she lost by trusting the advice of an unqualifid bank teller.
Ths is a true story. The names have been changed to protect the client’s identity. It is a common occurrence in the writer’s law practice to see parents put their children’s names on accounts with balances much larger than Gail’s. With respect to your estate plan, you have worked a lifetime and made great sacrificesto accumulate your assets. Whether you have a lot or a little, you will benefit greatly by seeking the advice and counsel of an experienced attorney who concentrates his practice in estate planning.

Dear Olivia,
We lost our mom last spring to cancer. My family and I are experiencing grief over her passing, and I am concerned about how we will cope. Are there any resources to help us with this grief?
-Grieving Family
Dear Grieving Family,
The loss of a loved one can have an impact long after their passing and especially during the holidays. I encourage you and your family to give yourselves permission to experience the feelings that come with grieving. When you embrace the pain of your loss, it helps you work through your grief. Allow yourselves to think about your mom and to replay memories you shared around the holidays—perhaps keeping
some traditions alive and creating some new ones can help.
Talking about your emotions in a safe environment helps to reduce the stress that accompanies grief. VNA’s highly trained staff can help you navigate the grief process through support, education and resources. It can be a great comfort to talk to someone who is familiar with the grief process. Additionally, we hold regular group meetings both in person and online throughout North Texas for those experiencing grief to have a safe place to share and learn together. Resources are also available at www.vnatexas.org and you can email griefcare@vnatexas.org for help.

USING HIS HOLLYWOOD PLATFORM FOR HUMANITARIAN ACTIVISM Sean Penn
Double-Oscar winner Sean Penn is known for playing deeply intense characters. But the Mystic River and Milk star is just as known for using his Hollywood influence to organize and encourage political and social change around the world.
Evolving from an early television appearance to becoming a two-time best-actor winner and prominent activist, Penn has always been in the limelight for his roles and responsibilities.
ACTING IS IN PENN’S BLOOD
Born in August 1960, Penn was raised with his three brothers in Santa Monica, California, by actor and director Leo Penn and actress Eileen Ryan. A few of his now-famous childhood friends included Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Robert Downey Jr., and Rob Lowe.
While Penn had parents in the film industry and grew up around friends with ties to the business, he hadn’t considered acting.
“I grew up going to sets sometimes with my father, and I found it all very interesting, but it never occurred to me to be part of filmmaking in any capacity,” he told MakingOf
One of Penn’s early experiences was when he appeared in a 1974 episode of the Little House on the Prairie T V series as an extra when his father directed some of the episodes.
He offially entered the industry in an off-roadway play in which he was spotted and chosen for the action-drama Taps, where he played a military high school cadet in the 1981 movie. His role as an underachieving surfer in the 1982 film Fast Times at Ridgemont High followed, and his career took offafter his 1983 role as a troubled youth in the crime drama Bad Boys.
Penn’s acting work paid offin the 1990s when the Academy Awards nominated him for two roles. Penn also made his directorial debut and directed music videos during this time.
Penn’s third Oscar nomination came in 2001 for the drama I Am Sam, and he fially won for his part as a grieving father in the mystery drama Mystic River in 2004.
He attended the Oscars for the fist time in the four times he’d been nominated. An opponent of the war in Iraq, Penn added a side of politics into his acceptance speech.
“If there’s one thing that actors know, other than there weren’t any WMDs, it’s that there is no such thing as best in acting,” he said, referring to weapons of mass destruction. “And that’s proven by these great actors that I was nominated with.”
He won his second Oscar in 2008 for his portrayal of a real-life politician and gay rights icon in the documentary Milk. “I did not expect this and... I know how hard I make it to appreciate me,” the outspoken Penn told the audience as he collected his award.
Penn played a diverse range of film roles until his satirical novel, “Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff,” was published in March 2018. He told Vogue that he no longer had “a generic interest in making films,” and that being a writer will “dominate my creative energies for the foreseeable future.”

I GREW UP GOING TO SETS SOMETIMES WITH MY FATHER, AND I FOUND IT ALL VERY INTERESTING, BUT IT NEVER OCCURRED TO ME TO BE PART OF FILMMAKING IN ANY CAPACITY
But Penn was inspired by his newest movie Flag Day, which was released in 2021. It was a family affir, too, as he starred with and directed his co-star daughter, Dylan Penn, 30. His son, Hopper, 28, also appeared in the movie. Both are Penn’s children with ex-wife actress and director Robin Wright.
“It’s been such a joy. And when we were shooting, we also had Hopper Jack with us. So, it’s been a great experience top to bottom,” Penn told USA Today about filming with his kids.
GETTING TO THE CORE OF PENN’S ACTIVISM
The other constant in Penn’s film career was and is his support of numerous political and social causes. From criticizing President George Bush to supporting same-sex marriage, Penn has gone with his heart and head to live well by rolling up his sleeves and putting his time and talent where his mouth is, in addition to his money.
One well-known example came on the heels of Penn’s Mystic River win in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. Frustrated by the search and rescue efforts, he launched a rescue mission, saving 40 stranded locals.
“As it turns out, you feel you can fixit,” he told Oprah. “And I guess I am drawn by that because I feel I can offer something that way, and as it turns out I’m good at choosing people who can do what I dream about getting done.”
After the 2010 Haiti earthquake, Penn founded the non-profit organization Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE, formerly J/P Haitian Relief Organization) to distribute aid and, as the organization grew, free COVID-19 tests and immunizations.
“It’s not enough to just be an artist,” Penn said in an interview with Variety magazine. “I think, in Haiti, that’s how I fially felt. I had other stuffto give. And so, I found a place to do that.”
CORE has most recently been in Ukraine and neighboring countries providing humanitarian relief to those devastated by the fatalities and war. Penn even loaned Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky one of his Oscars in November.
“It’s just a symbolic silly thing, but if I know this is here with you then I’ll feel better and stronger for the fihts,” Penn said in a video shared by Zelensky’s offi. “When you win, bring it back to Malibu.”
Penn shows that life is much more than mere existence. In his eyes, to live means to participate in life by speaking up for others and acting—not only on screen but by taking action on political and social changes globally.
“Our soul as America is lost,” if Americans allow the Ukrainian people to fiht alone, Penn released in a statement.

The Little “Push” to Help You Reach Your Goals
By LINDY ROGERS
If motivation can be bottled and sold, imagine the impact it would have on our lives. The price would probably be out of my budget. But what if there’s a little bit of free motivation already inside us?
I’ve heard the theory that motivation doesn’t exist that you have to start moving towards your desired goal and motivation will then come along. I tend to agree with that thought but something must get me up and get moving. That something is enthusiasm. Yes; Your attitude. Don’t run offyet. I know you’re probably thinking that answer is lame. But just give me a few minutes.
There’s no question we like hanging out with enthusiastic people. Unless a person likes to feel gloom, which I doubt many people do. Enthusiastic people keep the conversation going and upbeat and rubs offa little onto you. You’re automatically feeling uplifted and when you feel like that, you’d wish the conversation wouldn’t end. Ths upbeat enthusiastic feeling brings out the hyper character in us. It’s fuel to our fie. Just writing this, I’m feeling more enthusiastic myself.
You see, this enthusiasm is like a contagious disease. Probably the only disease everybody wants to catch. So, now the big question. “How do I go about getting enthusiastic?”
32 • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023
Here are some helpful tips to try:
USE THE “AS IF” PRINCIPLE.
In Richard Wiseman’s book “The As If Principle” he explains we are what we act. Just acting differently can make a lasting changing on your personality. Act as if you’re enthusiastic, put a smile on your face, pull your shoulders back, and dress the part. Act like who you want to be and feel.
KNOW YOUR “WHY”.
If you’re working towards a goal the most important key to boosting your enthusiasm about it is to have the best “why” you can muster. Make it as personal and as raw as you can get it. Have more than one “why” if you need to. Put reminders of this “why” all around you. Write them in code if it’s embarrassing or too personal but put it in front of you because when you’re about to slip, you’ll need that reminder to help you make a better choice. Should you slip, this “why” will help you get back on target and not stop.
CHANGE THE STORY YOU TELL YOURSELF.
Change the story you tell yourself about who you are. Journal it, put notes around to remind yourself that you are in charge of this life God has given you. It’s a gift for you to enjoy and design. Surround yourself with inspirational quotes that keep you reminded of this. Phone apps such as “Quotes” and others can automatically send you uplifting messages.
EXPERIENCE YOUR PASSION.
There are not simple solutions to many of the problems we all face. One way to cope and spark a little enthusiasm within the tough seasons of life is to spend a little time doing something we are passionate about. It does not matter if you’re good at it. If you love to paint, paint. If you love to sing, sing. Even if you don’t feel like it, let yourself experience what you love for a few minutes and ignite a little spark. It can help center your emotions and possible overcome victim-mode. You’re doing something you enjoy and you’re in control of. Give yourself permission to smile and have a happy moment even if you’re experiencing a tough time in life.
ENCOURAGE SOMEONE.
There’s an old saying that sums up my next tip well, “If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.” Your thoughts swirling around in your head may have you bogged down. Get out and have a conversation with a friend. You can lift each other up and help each other out. Helping others either through pep talks, or volunteering can boost your enthusiasm and self-talk.
Get creative about this. You know yourself best. You probably have many other ideas that you could add to my list. Be kind to yourself and remember, practice makes perfect. It’s unrealistic to expect to feel enthusiastic 24/7 but you can make improvements and take steps towards your goal and become better and better in the process. No matter how small and insignifiant the steps you take make seem, they do all add up into some become big. Something that you achieved and something you can help someone else do.

IT MAY JUST BE EAR WAX…OR NOT!

You’ve seen the advertisements; “it may just be ear wax”—but what if it’s not? There are many causes of hearing loss such as ear infections, noise exposure, ear trauma, sudden idiopathic hearing loss, ear or auditory nerve tumors, Meniere’s disease among many other possible reasons. That’s where the skill of the hearing professional comes into play.
Our staffof licensed audiologists with doctoral degrees in Audiology have spent 8 years in school (4 years of undergraduate and 4 years of a doctoral program including a full audiology residency or externship) studying such things as the causes of hearing loss, the balance system, hearing instrument technology, auditory processing, anatomy and physiology of the auditory system and non-medical treatment of hearing loss. We often, as professionals, work closely with Ear, Nose and Thoat physicians.
Whenever you’re seeking hearing healthcare, make sure you ask about their experience, years of training and type of training from the practitioner. Not all professionals, unfortunately, are created equal. We recently had a patient come in from a big box store (where they had gone for hearing testing and to look at purchasing hearing aids) for a second opinion and two different medical conditions directly related to hearing were missed. These are often medical conditions that need medical treatment and could impact not only a person’s performance with amplifiation but if treated, may eliminate the need for amplifiation. Or there are cases that could impact a person’s health in general (such as a tumor). As audiologists we will refer onto the ENT when medically warranted.
Secondly, hearing healthcare isn’t always about the price. You can see some low cost ads that are referencing dated technology or perhaps very little technology. Don’t necessarily be fooled by the price and/or incentives. You have seen our past articles that discuss some of the recent hearing aid innovations. We realize everyone’s hearing and communication needs are different so it’s important to work with a hearing professional that will walk you through the various options of styles and technologies available today.
Finally, we want our patients to be educated so that you can make the best decision for your communication needs. Just be comfortable with the hearing professional that you choose!
SO, YOU THINK YOU’VE HEARD
IT ALL?
Did you know that over 36 MILLION AMERICANS have a significant hearing loss?
Did you know that only 6 MILLION have sought help?
Did you know that hearing loss has been cited as the THIRD MOST COMMON health related problem in America?
Did you also know that according to the Better Hearing Institute, 95% OF PEOPLE with hearing loss can be helped with today’s advanced technology?
It’s time to find your personalized solution.

Healthy Winter Habits to Maintain Health
Another cough and cold season calls for healthy preparation, and while there may not be a foolproof plan for escaping pesky germs, taking preventive steps and practicing self-care can help protect your health.
You can catch a cold or flu any time of the year, but they seem more common during the cooler months.
“As much as we all would love a quick cure for the common cold, unfortunately, that doesn’t exist,” said Ian K. Smith, MD. “However, there are many options one can try to relieve cold and flu symptoms, including over-the-counter medications. These medications can provide fast and much-needed relief.”
Reduce the chances you’ll contract a serious illness this cold season by following these tips from the experts at Mucinex:
42 • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023
Courtesy FAMILY FEATURES
• MAKE HANDWASHING A PRIORITY.
Preventive measures like washing your hands often can signifiantly lower your odds of getting sick. In fact, handwashing is such a powerful tool against germs that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention compared it to a “do-it-yourself vaccine.” Wash regularly with soap and water for about 20 seconds, especially when handling food, caring for someone sick or after using the restroom.
• MAKE OVERALL WELLNESS A WAY OF LIFE.
Adopting healthy everyday habits means your body is in better condition to fiht off otential attacks by germs and combat an illness more effectively if you do get sick. A well-balanced diet that includes moderate portions from each of the major food groups can help ensure you’re getting the nutrition and nutrients your body needs. Staying physically active can help promote a stronger immune system. Getting enough sleep and making sure you’re drinking enough water can also ensure your body is ready for whatever the season brings.
• STOCK UP ON NECESSARY SUPPLIES.
If you do get sick, the best place for you is at home, where you can nurse yourself back to health. That means having the essentials on hand, like over-the-counter medications to treat uncomfortable cold and flu symptoms. Be sure to check last year’s leftovers, as some may have expired. A shopping list to fiht common cold and flu symptoms should include pain relievers, fever reducers, decongestants, antihistamines, throat lozenges and cough suppressants, as well as plenty of facial tissue, a working thermometer, humidifier nd more. Also update your supply of hand sanitizer and disinfecting cleaners and sprays to protect family members in your home.
• RELIEVE BOTHERSOME SYMPTOMS.
When you’re under the weather, treating your symptoms gives you a reprieve and lets your body rest so you can get back to feeling better. A cough is a common cold symptom, and relieving chest congestion that causes you to cough frequently can make a big difference. An option like Mucinex Extended-Release Bi-Layer Tablets, with the No. 1 pharmacist recommended expectorant, is clinically proven to relieve chest congestion and thin and loosen mucus to make your cough more productive for up to 12 hours. If symptoms persist, contact your health care professional.
• DO YOUR PART TO PREVENT SPREADING GERMS. If you do get sick, know you can take steps to protect those around you. Simple acts like covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and using your elbow if you don’t have a tissue can be effective in preventing the spread of germs. It’s also important to wash your hands well and keep a distance from others to help prevent the spread of your illness. You can fid more advice for preventing illness and protecting yourself this cough and cold season at Mucinex.com.

New Year, New You
Courtesy KEY-WHITMAN EYE CENTER
While beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, the key to beauty and a youthful appearance may be in the hands of a skilled cosmetic surgeon who specializes in treating the eyes and areas around the eyes.
Are fie lines, wrinkles, sun damage, droopy eyelids, bags under the eyes or sagging brows getting you down? Then schedule a visit with one of our oculoplastic surgeons at Key-Whitman’s Cosmetic Center.
Why choose an oculoplastic surgeon to help you look younger?
When we look at someone’s face, our gaze gravitates toward the eyes fist. When signs of aging appear on the face, people notice. One of the fist places the signs of aging show up is around the eyes. Ths can involve the eyelids, forehead, cheeks, eye socket, or all of these.
The eyelids are a delicate area, and the eyelid skin is the thinnest skin of the body. When looking for improvement around the eyes, you need a surgeon who specializes exclusively in this area. Oculoplastic surgeons not only take into account the health of the eye as a top priority but also have intimate knowledge of the detailed anatomy here.”
Key-Whitman’s Dr. Pfeiffer and Dr. May are trained eye surgeons (ophthalmologists) who also added a two-year specialty fellowship in oculoplasty (reconstructive and cosmetic surgery in the eyelids and tissues surrounding the eye).
Four ways to get a fresh, youthful look with cosmetic procedures:
The team at Key-Whitman Cosmetic Center are pleased to offer patients a variety of anti-aging treatments—from minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures like Botox and laser resurfacing to surgical procedures, including eyelid lifts,under-eye bag correction, and brow lifts
Ready for a younger-looking you? Our ocuplastic surgeons break down the top facial aging culprits and how to address them below.
NO. 1: WRINKLES. THE SOLUTION? NEUROTOXINS LIKE BOTOX.
If wrinkles on your forehead, crow’s feet around the eyes or deep vertical lines between your brows are aging you beyond your years, you’re not alone. Injecting Botox in those areas creates a smooth appearance and also gives a refreshing look around the eyes.
NO. 2: SUN-DAMAGED SKIN AND FINE LINES. THE SOLUTION? LASER RESURFACING.
Here in Texas a lot of people experience sun damage. Unfortunately, sun damage can really age the skin. Depending on the patient, we may treat sun damage on the face with CO2 laser resurfacing or the Intense Pulsed Light laser.
NO. 3: DROOPY UPPER EYELIDS AND BROWS. THE SOLUTION? SURGERY.
Many patients feel young but think that the appearance of their eyes makes them look older than they feel. Often droopy eyelids are the culprit. This can be improved with surgery. These are by far the most common surgical procedures we perform. Surgery takes place at our stateof-the-art surgery center at Key-Whitman’s Dallas headquarters.
NO. 4: SAGGY LOWER EYELIDS. THE SOLUTION? SURGERY.
Many of our patients don’t like the way their lower eyelid bags cause them to look tired and older than they feel. We can really improve their appearance by removing or repositioning the fat under their eyes. In addition, we can use CO2 laser resurfacing to smooth the lines and wrinkles below the eyes.
About Dr. Pfeiffer Leslie Pfeiffer, MD is board certifid by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Texas Ophthalmology Association and the medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha.
