THE STORY BEHIND A FACE

Aface conveys the story of a life, a life lived and experienced with a multitude of emotions, while doing countless activities. Whatever you’ve filled your life doing, daily living takes a toll on your face and body in often unexpected and unwanted ways. That’s where plastic surgeon Gregory D. Roberts comes in.

For over 20 years, Dr. Roberts has reversed the effects of time on hundreds of patients, providing them with results that are in harmony with their individual facial features. Offering a host of surgical and nonsurgical procedures to achieve each patient’s unique desires and goals, Dr. Roberts helps re-shape a person’s beauty for a renewed sense of self-confidece. Read about this accomplished doctor’s results in his cover story inside.

Speaking of faces telling a story, when Cole Hauser ambled in to his fist scene in the hit show Yellowstone, most people had a hard time placing where they’d seen him before—so complete was the transformation of this previously clean-shaven actor from his previous roles.

Hauser’s nuanced portrayal of Yellowstone’s ranch foreman Rip Wheeler is in no small part dependent on a face that appears forged from years spent in the saddle, braving the elements. Sporting a dark, wiry beard and a wizened expression, Hauser’s faces conveys a multitude of emotions that range from fiece and vulnerable to rough and tender.

As Texans, we recognize that steely gaze and determination that comes from years spent working the land, which makes Hauser’s character so engrossing to watch. In this issue, we catch up with the breakout star to learn about his Montana and Texas connections and to hear what’s next for this now bonafide cwboy starting on page 24.

Meanwhile, we have a lot more going on in this issue, including an insightful and timely article from Hodges Capital on everything you need to know about retirement income planning.

Be well!

Transforming Self Esteems

Each patient is unique, so it’s important to really listen to what the patient wants.

We inherit some great characteristics from our ancestors. A sense of humor. A strong work ethic. Maybe even features such as high cheekbones and expressive eyes. But sometimes we also receive Dad’s baggy eyelids, Mom’s sagging jowls, a distracting nose or weak chin. Some of these traits can hide our inner beauty. Coupled with the effects of time, they may cause us to look tired and even older than we feel.

Unlike generations before us, we can explore surgical and nonsurgical options that not only produce natural results but are also affordable. The key is fiding a plastic surgeon who has honed his skills and innovative techniques, listens to your goals and explains your options while striving to adhere to the highest standards. That surgeon is Gregory D. Roberts, M.D.

For over 20 years, he’s devoted his practice to helping his patients achieve natural results and endeavoring to exceed their expectations. “Each patient is unique,” Dr. Roberts said, “so it’s important to really listen to what the patient wants. I start by asking what bothers you. What do you hope to achieve?”

Dr. Roberts specializes in facial plastic surgery. His objective is to provide results that are in harmony with individual facial features. He also wants patients to be able to go out in public without makeup if they so desire. Ths requires him to take additional time in each procedure to incorporate a series of precise surgical methods.

For example, during a female Face Lift,he utilizes post-tragal incisions placed on the inside of the ear and bevels placement of incisions at the hairline to help provide a virtually “scarless” appearance.

In an Endoscopic Brow Lift, e typically places tiny endoscopic incisions hidden above the hairline.

In each Rhinoplasty Nose Contouring procedure, his goal is to provide an outcome that fits with an individual’s unique anatomy, as well as incorporating each person’s unique desires and goals. That is why his nose jobs can look so different from one person to the next.

Many of our patients find a new or renewed sense of self-confidence. To me, it is as much of an aura of confidence as it is the results of the procedure that helps re-shape a person’s beauty. That is very fulfilling to me.

In Otoplasty Ear Contouring, Chin Implants and Lip Implants, results are individualized, and incisions performed with the goal of hiding any signs of surgical intervention for a natural look and feel. (Visit RobertsCosmeticSurery.com to see other surgical methods incorporated in Dr. Roberts’ Face Lift rocedures.)

“No surgery can be performed without an incision, but over the years I’ve perfected my techniques so incisions can be practically imperceptible in many procedures I perform,” Dr. Roberts said.

Dr. Roberts also utilizes FDA-approved injectables such as Juvéderm®, Voluma®, Radiesse® & Botox® to stave offthe signs of aging—perfect for patients who are hesitant to commit to surgery, who don’t need surgery or for post-surgery maintenance. Roberts Cosmetic Surgery can also address issues such as sun damage, acne scarring, wrinkles and uneven pigmentation with advanced fractional resurfacing lasers.

“ There’s an artistic element to every aspect of our practice,” Dr. Roberts said. “Many of our patients fid a new or renewed sense of self-confidece. To me, it is as much of an aura of confidece as it is the results of the procedure that helps re-shape a person’s beauty. That is very fulfilling to me.”

On the personal side, Dr. Roberts’ likes to fish, golf and adores pets. He loves it when patients show him pictures of their beloved pets, and delights in talking with patients about their furry best friends, and of course his best friend and sidekick Baylor, named after his alma mater.

Dr. Roberts is certifid by the American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. All procedures are performed at Dr. Robert’s AAAASF certifid facility near George Bush Tollway and Preston Road in Dallas suburb, Plano, Texas. TESTIMONIALS

Dr. Roberts’ patients love their results! Read what they have to say about him. Some patients travel across the globe to see him. This is why Dr Roberts has an overall Internet rating of 4.59 stars! (source ReviewInc)

“The sagging in my neck and jowl area started to bother me so much, I no longer wore my hair off y face. I decided to do [a facelift ith Dr. Roberts]. Not one person has asked if I had a face lift. Instead they tell me how pretty my skin is or how good I look. I don’t have to even wear makeup because there are no scars! The results were just what I wanted, natural and almost subtle. I love it.”

JANNA

“My nose has always been a big insecurity growing up. I always felt so masculine with the wide bridge and boxy tip. I am so glad that I found Dr. Roberts because the outcome of this surgery has changed my life in the positive way I finally see myself. I’m so happy that I went through with the procedure. I’m so pleased with the results!”

RACHEL

“I am so glad I chose Dr. Gregory Roberts for my eye procedure. From the consultation to my post-op checkup, I have been impressed with his skill, expertise and gentle manner. Dr. Roberts and his staff are kind, caring professionals who patiently answered all of my questions. I am thrilled with my results and can’t thank Dr. Roberts enough for giving me back my self-confidence!”

NEW YEAR’S CHECKLIST

Throughout history, the New Year has always been representative of a new beginning. Every January 1st presents us all with the opportunity to take an inventory of last year’s resolutions and recommit ourselves to a new set of goals. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, many will add “getting affirs in order” to their list of aspirations for 2022. Many people think only of a Will when contemplating the legal documents necessary to protect their future. However, there are more documents and considerations in developing a well-rounded estate plan. Every estate plan ought to include the following documents:

2 Durable Power of Attorney

2 Medical Power of Attorney

2 Directive to Physicians and Family or Surrogates (Living Will)

2 Authorization to Release Medical Information (HIPAA Authorization)

2 Declaration of Guardian

2 Will

2 Long-term Care Insurance

Although often overlooked, a Durable Power of Attorney and a Medical Power of Attorney are critical parts of long-term care planning, since they designate the person or persons who will be acting for you in the event you are unable to handle your own fiancial and health care decisions. Without these documents, no one, not even your spouse, is legally authorized to handle your fiances or make medical decisions for you.

Your estate planning documents are extremely powerful and should be executed after great contemplation. The people you appoint to act on your behalf as your agents should be those you trust fully to handle your affirs now, as well as when you cannot handle them on your own. If you do not trust the person you have named to act for you right now, be careful about naming that person to act for you when you are incapacitated. Often people appoint spouses, adult children, or other family members as agents to keep affirs private and to avoid hurting feelings. However, appointing a family member may not always be the best option. In all cases, signing estate planning documents should be done only after deep reflction as to the abilities and trustworthiness of each candidate.

In addition to the essential legal documents listed above, another planning area that warrants early and informed consideration is preparing for the cost of funding long-term care. Long-term care differs from other types of healthcare, in that the goal of long-term care is not to cure an illness, but to provide an individual with support so they can maintain an optimal level of functioning. Some people want to stay in their homes as long as possible and bring in outside help to make that possible. Others want the freedom from home maintenance that a senior residence community offers. There is a wide range of living arrangements

for seniors, from retirement communities to assisted living facilities to skilled nursing facilities. There exists a long-standing myth that Medicare will cover all our healthcare needs, including the cost of long-term care. The reality is that Medicare provides support only in limited situations. Notably, Medicare does not pay for assisted living, memory care, or long-term custodial care in skilled nursing facilities.

Some people are fortunate to have the ability to private pay for long-term care, which ranges from $3,000–$16,000/month in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Others have long-term care insurance (an insurance policy designed to cover long-term healthcare expenses that are not covered by health insurance or Medicare). However, long-term care insurance may not be available if you have certain existing health problems, and the costs and premiums can rise as you age. Therefore, it is important to investigate the availability of long-term care insurance as early as possible. If you cannot qualify for long-term care insurance, there are fiancial options that may fit your circumstances and provide similar coverage. Professionals who work primarily with seniors, such as Elder Law attorneys, can often provide connections to a community of support agencies and other professionals who may be of assistance to you as you explore your options.

Ths year, resolve to take the time to crafta thoughtful, and thorough, estate plan. Educate yourself on your options, and seek qualifid professional advice on legal documents, healthcare, insurance, and fiancial planning. A little planning now goes a long way towards ensuring that you and your loved ones are protected, no matter what the future holds. Lori Leu, Erin Peirce, Lauren Olson, and Emily Seale are Elder Law attorneys with Leu & Peirce, PLLC located in Plano, Texas. They can be reached at 972-996-2540.

DART’s New Bus Network Debuts Jan. 24

On Jan. 24, 2022, DART will begin service on its New Bus Network. As the name implies, this service change will be a complete overhaul of DART’s bus system and GoLink services, which means every route will change in some way. The agency also will restore light rail service to pre-pandemic frequency.

DART’s New Bus Network will be simpler, better, faster and easier. More people will live within a half mile of DART service. You’ll have better access to jobs and a faster commute. Routes will have improved frequency and longer hours. GoLink will add coverage to more residential and commercial areas. There are a lot of improvements to look forward to.

IF YOU ARE A CURRENT DART RIDER, HERE ARE SOME OF THE KEY CHANGES TO EXPECT:

• All new routes and numbers:

The bus route(s) you ride today will no longer exist. All routes will be replaced by new routes with a new number and/or with GoLink service. Soon we will post a chart that lets you look up your current route and fid your future

service. You also can use our interactive map to look up specific addesses on GoPass.org under “Find My New Route.”

• Some fied-route service replaced by GoLink: Some fied-route bus service will be replaced with DART’s on-demand GoLink service. We are doubling the number of GoLink zones, often providing coverage to areas that have little or no bus service now. Plus, we’re starting the new GoLink services early on Dec. 6 so you can try it out before the big January service change. Visit GoPass.org and click on “GoLink On Demand” to learn more.

• Bus stops will be eliminated:

Prior to Jan. 24, you will see bags covering your bus stop signs that show the current bus service at that stop... and tell you what the future service will be. If the bus stop is scheduled to be removed, we’ll tell you that, too, and let you know what the nearest new route or GoLink zone will be.

SPORTS EYE SAFETY TIPS

Did you know that more than  25,000 people  seek treatment for sports-related eye injuries each year? Damage to your eyes can have lasting effects extending beyond pain during the initial blow—it can lead to vision issues over time.

Protecting Your Eyes While Playing Sports

Keep reading to learn more about common conditions that could affect your game, and how to protect your vision from our team at Key-Whitman Eye Center.

Keep Your Eyes Healthy on the Field

Whether you’re competing in a game with friends or are hitting the fild for some exercise, here are some tips to keep your eyes safe:

• Consider wearing contacts or shatter-proof glasses.

Eye Conditions That Could Limit Your Ability

In addition to preventing damage to your eyes, it’s important to know which conditions can affect your athletic ability. Certain eye conditions can limit your ability to play sports, such as nearsightedness and cataracts.

Patients with  cataracts  may experience blurred or distorted vision, making completing daily activities and competing in sports difficult.

Warning Signs of Eye Conditions

While many patients think it’s okay to ignore eye issues, this won’t make them go away and can potentially damage your eyes more.

If you are experiencing any of the following  symptoms or other abnormalities  with your eyes, contact your ophthalmologist for an appointment:

• Sudden or severe eye pain.

• Sudden vision changes or loss.

• Heavy eye discharge.

• Burning and itching of the eye.

A Smile to Smile About

There is a famous quote from Mother Teresa that says: “Let us always meet each other with smile, for a smile is the beginning of love.” I couldn’t think of a more beautiful way to share the vast importance of having a beautiful smile.

A smile is often the fist thing we notice about someone, and with it we impose love, laughter, joy, and many other positive emotions that ultimately shape lives. The fact that we can change someone’s day and how they feel about us and their circumstances just because of the appearance of a smile cannot be underestimated. That is why I want to talk to you about smile makeovers.

Because of the effect of years and life, our teeth can start to decline, and it becomes evident when we smile. Stains, cracks, trauma, decay, or crooked teeth all give the appearance that our teeth are struggling, and it is often accompanied by decreasing the confidece of the person. I cannot tell you how many times I have noticed people who alter their normal smile to hide something with their teeth that embarrasses them.

Years of not smiling in a relaxed way will also create wrinkles in less than desirable ways around the lips. I also cannot tell you how many times we have created a new smile for a patient and it becomes life changing. The process is easier than you probably think. It all starts with a consultation with a cosmetic dentist to explore the possibilities. Ths article will help you understand several of the options available to help you achieve the smile you have always dreamed of having.

Teeth Whitening

The fist and most common procedure we offer patients is teeth whitening. Ths is the simplest way to freshen up your smile and it can be done in-officor at home. Using a Zoom whitening system, whitening in-officis the quickest way to whiten your teeth, allowing the patient to spend less time thinking about the process, and more time spent with work or family. Whitening at home is accomplished with custom trays, enhancing your teeth from the comfort of your home.

Orthodontics

The second option is often orthodontics. Using Invisalign, crooked teeth are straightened and moved into proper position. Ths allows easier cleaning and fewer issues for food traps, gum irritations, and

traumatic biting relationships prematurely wearing down teeth. Invisalign trays are custom given to the patient in a series for a patient to wear, slowly moving teeth into proper alignment, giving a healthier mouth and better cosmetic appearance.

Crowns

Another excellent option, crowns. Crowns are wonderful for patients because many things are accomplished at the same time and can be completed very quickly. Teeth that are worn down, crooked, or discolored can be covered with shaded/whitened crowns to give a natural and beautiful white smile.

Many patients choose to makeover their smile in one day with crowns and get an instant life-changing effect! Crowns are great options for those who have struggled clenching their teeth throughout life and have lost too much of their tooth structure. Crowns, when taken care of, can last a very long time and are quite sturdy and strong. The goal with using crowns is to accomplish a beautiful smile that fits the patient naturally and makes them look younger.

Invest in Your Smile

Investing in your smile is exactly that—an investment. It is an investment in your confidece, your personality, your health, and your relationships. Cosmetic dentistry is some of the most incredibly rewarding dentistry that I offer. It is exciting each and every time to be able to play a part in helping someone achieve the look they have envisioned for themselves.

At the end of the day, we get one walk through this journey of life. Why not live life to the fullest in the manner which brings out the best and most confidet version of ourselves? For women, it might be to create a smile that sparkles with elegance. For men, perhaps the aim is to create something that looks professional. Whoever the person or whatever the desire, the wonderful thing is that there are several options available that can help provide the means necessary for making your desires a reality.

Don’t put it offany longer. Get the smile you can truly smile for! Give Allen Dental Center a call today or visit us online to start your smile makeover journey immediately.

RANCH HAND

YELLOWSTONE ’S COLE HAUSER BRINGS HEART AND SOUL TO COWBOY ROLE.

When Cole Hauser ambled in to his fist scene in the Paramount series Yellowstone, it took more than a few episodes to place where you’d seen the actor before.

Hauser’s transformation from the clean-shaven actor who fist appeared in 1992’s School Ties, followed by such films as Good Will Hunting, Pitch Black, Olympus Has Fallen, Transcendence, and 2 Fast 2 Furious, was such that it completely took viewers by surprise.

Sporting a dark, wiry beard, substantial heft,a worn cowboy hat, and steely gaze, Hauser’s portrayal of Yellowstone’s ranch foreman Rip Wheeler is engrossing. A complex character that is both fiece yet vulnerable, rough yet tender, his deftperformance leaves women watching the show swooning and the men wanting to be him.

In a show that highlights ranching, wildlife conflits, and politics amid fiey family drama and corrupt land developers, Rip serves as the show’s moral compass of sorts. The perfect foil to John Dutton, the hardened ranching patriarch of the Yellowstone ranch skillfully played by Kevin Costner, Rip’s storyline is rich in contrasts.

“He is quiet, cool, and breathes everything that is Montana. Rip Wheeler is someone who is not very modern, who is more old school in his loyalties and in the way he acts. I realized this is something that needs to be portrayed, and I wanted to do it,” explained Hauser to Guns & Ammo’s Mike Schooby on his motivation to take on the role.

DALLAS COUNTY • 25

In addition to wanting to work with Yellowstone’s two creators, Taylor Sheridan and John Linson and being intrigued with Rip’s character, Hauser also saw the job as a way to connect with the rural life he experienced as a child, as well as a chance to explore his deep personal ties to Montana.

“I grew up on a really nice ranch in Oregon for about four years,” he told Bobbie Jean Sawyer of Wide Open Country. “ Those were my earliest memories of being a kid.”

Meanwhile, Hauser’s dad’s family hails from Helena, Montana. Recently, Hauser and his eldest son researched the family to learn his great-great grandfather, Samual T. Hauser, helped fund the Louis and Clark Expedition.

“ There is a lake named after him and all kinds of stuff. We went on this little history tour. He was a really special guy, a pioneer in many ways. He has been there since 1870. Thik about that area in 1870, there was nothing out there. He came through the Great Lakes and into Montana, that’s wild. Samual T. Hauser was the fist governor of Montana. I have always had this love for the state but didn’t really know why. It makes so much sense now. I mean, my family has been there since the beginning of time,” he told Courtney Rodgers of the Havoc Journal.

Although he spent time on a ranch growing up and performed some rodeo stunts for The High-Lo Country, a 1998 Western he starred in opposite Sam Elliott and Woody Harrelson, Hauser considered himself a novice horseman before Yellowstone

“Taylor Sheridan, Ross Coleman and all these cowboys put me through the works. They had me on horses every day, different horses, different saddles and after a lot of work, I can say now I am a ‘rider,’ but before I was not. I now know about my feet and ankles and what they should be doing versus yanking a horse around by his neck,” said Hauser to Schoby.

While becoming a horseman worthy of Yellowstone took some doing, 46-year-old Hauser didn’t require much practice for the fiearms part of being a cowboy. An avid hunter who advocates for gun ownership rights, his stance is an anomaly in Hollywood.

“Listen, my right as an American is to own guns. Responsibility is a big deal to me. Have we as a community forgotten a little bit about

responsibility? Possibly. But in my household, no,” he told Guns & Ammo. “All my children know how to shoot and handle fiearms safely. They will always know how to shoot, and they will be able to protect themselves, in every way they can. But gun ownership really all boils down to personal responsibility.”

Hauser has hunted in Texas, Montana, and other places around the West and holds a deep respect for the age-old practice. He won’t shoot anything that he doesn’t intend on eating and shuns the use of riding around in a truck or employing anything other than old school methods.

“When you hunt at the highest level, without bait, feeders, etcetera, and you fially get the one you are after, after walking miles, there is a certain amount of respect you have for that animal as well as respect for the process. I don’t think non-hunters really understand that. They may go to Whole Foods to buy meat, and they don’t really think about where it came from. When you walked for it and really hunted it and butchered it and stocked your freezer with it and now your kids are eating it, it is just a different feeling.”

It’s this ethos of a multifaceted, extremely interesting, deep-thinking, heartfelt, strong American man that Hauser embraces for this once-in-a-lifetime role, one which he suspected would resonate strongly with viewers.

“RIP WHEELER IS SOMEONE WHO IS NOT VERY MODERN, WHO IS MORE OLD SCHOOL IN HIS LOYALTIES AND IN THE WAY HE ACTS.”

“It obviously wasn’t what it is now. But there were people throughout the country who were watching very closely right out of the gates,” he told writer Joe Leydon for Cowboys and Indians. “And then I think it’s bled into the younger crowd, which has been really cool to see over the last couple of years. There are

more and more younger people coming up to me and talking about this show then there were initially. I meant, I was at a high school football game the other day here in Florida, and I was shocked that 16-year-olds, 14-yearolds, 18-year-olds—male and female—are watching the show and are blown away and love it.”

While Hauser credits Kevin Costner for much of the show’s early buzz, he’s been surprised about the outpouring of love for his character Rip. “He’s not somebody that Taylor and I thought, ‘Oh well, people, men and women, are just going to love this guy.’ I think that’s been a happy surprise for us both. And to see the response in the public to the character—for me, personally, it’s just been a real blessing.”

Yellowstone fans will be pleased to know that the show’s popularity has spawned two highly anticipated spinoffs Y:1883, s prequel starring Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as John Dutton’s ancestors James and Margaret Dutton and 6666, set in Texas.

In case you can’t get enough of Hauser, he has two films set to debut in 2022—Muti, a thriller with Morgan Freeman, and Panama, an action-adventure co-starring Mel Gibson.

A happily married (sorry ladies) father of three, Hauser lives in Florida and puts just as much effort into his family as he does his thriving career. “I am pretty good about compartmentalizing working and family. They are two of my biggest passions. I am not the kind of guy who forgets about them.”

HOW A SLEEPY TEXAS TOWN BECAME DFW’S HIGH-TECH HUB

Just an hour north of Reunion Tower, nestled between the Red River and the sprawling suburbs of McKinney, sits Sherman, Texas, county seat of Grayson County. And over the last few months, the eyes of many Texans—not to mention several national and international heavyweights of industry—have been focused fimly upon this growing city of 45,000 people.

What they’ve seen here has catapulted this historic community to the forefront of Texas’s burgeoning high-tech economy. And with Texas Instruments’ November announcement of a $29 billion (with-a-‘b’) semiconductor plant to begin construction in early 2022, sufficto say that those eyes are now wide-open to the seemingly limitless untapped potential of Sherman.

“People have been saying for decades that growth was coming up Highway 75, but then it never really happened,” said Sherman Mayor David Plyler. “But after what we’ve seen in the last few years, there aren’t many doubters left”

In 2017, Finisar (since rebranded as “II-VI”) renovated a 700,000-square-foot building in Sherman, investing $390 million of Apple’s money to create an onshore production facility for iPhone chips. And with those 500 new jobs in hand, Sherman had offially announced itself as major combatant in the Metroplex’s internecine battle to woo the next great titan of industry.

“ That really put us on the map,” said Sherman City Manager Robby Hefton. “And as the jobs came, the rooftops quickly followed.”

A steady stream of emigrants from cities further south and states far afild soon began to pay Sherman and its cheap housing notice. A trickle of 100 new homes a year expanded to 150, then 200, and now 300 new housing starts each year—a number that’s expected to double in 2022.

But those housing numbers could soon look quaint. News broke in late November that Texas Instruments had selected Sherman over Singapore for a new facility that will be one of the largest factories in the United States when complete—on par with Tesla’s plant in Austin. And the 3,000 high-paying jobs that come along with it will deliver the type of growth that most cities only dream about.

“Sherman provides some unique advantages such as a competitive business environment, access to a highly trained technical workforce,

and an existing supplier base,” said TI Senior Vice President of Technology and Manufacturing Kyle Flessner.

But preparing for this day has been a process that stretches back decades. In order to capitalize on its water rights in nearby Lake Texoma, Sherman undertook a massive expansion of its water treatment facility in 2020. That $30-million investment gave the city far more water than it was able to use at the time, creating a reservoir of potential, should an opportunity like the TI plant ever come along.

“We’re very fortunate in Sherman that our leaders have had the foresight to make sure we would have all the water we would need,” said Hefton, the city manager. “We are able to chart our own course when we need to make hard decisions. And God continues to bless our community in ways that are unimaginable.”

Now, the flodgates are open. Literally hours after the TI announcement, Hefton’s phone was already ringing. Companies large and small have reached out to learn what made Sherman so attractive, and to be next in line to take advantage of what it has to offer.

So, water? Check.

Jobs? Check.

Affordable housing? Write a small check.

And as for quality-of-life, well, that’s the mayor’s forte. Sherman hosts perhaps the largest free concert series in Texas, with big-name acts every summer. Also on the city’s résumé: a brand-new high school that opened last year; a re-blossoming historic downtown chockfull of locally-owned shops and restaurants; and city property taxes that are among the lowest in the state. Leaders say it’s a recipe for sustained success that extends far beyond the big-tech headlines.

“It’s pretty remarkable, how quickly it’s all come together,” said Plyler. “You spend all these years preparing for growth, but when it arrives is out of your hands. All you can do is plant the seeds and wait for nature to do its thing.”

It was Hemingway who coined “Gradually, then suddenly,” in his 1926 book The Sun Also Rises, and it seems an apt phrase for what’s happened in Sherman in the last few years—incremental growth, followed by a day in the sun in which everything comes together.

And now that the sun has risen in Sherman, it seems the day may have only just begun.

Everything You Need to Know About Retirement Income Planning

Those of you inching closer to retirement are probably wondering how your golden years will work from a fiancial standpoint. Ths is a natural curiosity, as you will one day need to replicate your income from your savings and other sources. While this might sound like a daunting task, it’s actually pretty simple to illustrate. I think that the advisory and planning industry provides too much detail around the topic and it might be explained in a way

that is confusing or downright scary. I’ll attempt to alleviate those feelings as we walk through a simple example. Most of you probably have a good handle on your income sources and expenses. The goal now is to figue out your known sources of income. Typical sources:

• Social Security

• Employer Pension

• Rental Property

These are all hypothetical numbers for illustrative purposes

Social Security (spouses combined): $4,000 mo................................$48,000 yr

Pension: $5,000 mo................................$60,000 yr

Rental Property (net of expenses): $1,500 mo................................$18,000 yr

Sub-Total: $10,500 mo............................$126,000 yr

Now, let’s add-in the effects of $1,000,000 in investible money from all accounts. Let’s assume the income producing stocks and bonds in the portfolio throws off 2.5% er year.

Then we need to figue out variable income from all your investment accounts; IRAs, Individual Accounts, Joint Accounts, 401ks, etc. These accounts will be invested and will be throwing offincome from the investments you own, plus appreciation (over time). Ths income can be added to all of your known sources, and voila, you have your retirement income plan. To give you more peace of mind, let’s plug in some numbers:

$1,000,000 @ 2.5%.............................................................$25,000

Total…………………………………..………………$151,000*

DALLAS COUNTY • 37
Continued on next page

“Ths is all well and good, but I need more income.” I get this request pretty often, so there’s more that one can harvest from their investment accounts to get that extra income. Let’s use the same example as the couple with the $1 million in investible accounts. Let’s say they need $50,000 per year (5%) from the aggregate of all their accounts. Well, as shown above, half of it (2.5%) is already coming in from dividends and bond coupons, so where does the other 2.5% come from. The answer is the appreciation of the portfolio. That’s right, at the end of the day you are indifferent from getting $50,000 a year in dividends vs. selling $50,000 worth of your investments.** It’s all just money! Ths is a concept called total return. It’s your investment income + the appreciation over time.

You might be saying to yourself, “Well, that seems like I’m digging into principal, and I am not comfortable with that.” I get this question by virtually every client, and here’s my simple answer. As long as your total return, over time, is in excess of your withdrawals, your principal will continue to grow over time.

The next natural question (and I’ll spare you from having to ask) is how does this work in a recession and a bear market? It’s a fair question and one that deserves an answer. Given that the duration of market cycles can vary, and trying to predict the next big downturn is a fool’s errand, it’s always good to have a cash cushion that makes a person comfortable. Perhaps one to two years’ worth of cash needs should be kept in a money market? When the market takes that big dip, you can now draw from your cushion without having to sell anything during the down period. Once the market comes back, you replenish the cash you have taken out by selectively selling when things have rebounded. The specificsof how your portfolio should be allocated is an exercise that all clients should have with their advisor.

A quick note on financial planning:

The essence of a plan is showing a person how to get income by pulling various levers at various times. There really isn’t much more to it than that. Where the artistry comes into play is helping a client figue out when it’s best to pull each lever. For example, should I take social security as early as I can or should I defer? Should I start taking distributions from my IRA now, or wait until age 72 when the Required Minimum Distribution kicks in?

All of these variables can be worked out when talking to a client and running scenarios. Sure, there could always be some one-offsalong the way. Perhaps you want to sell a rental property, or you might be getting an inheritance. All of these can be accounted for and baked into your income plan when they occur. Again, putting together the plan is not the hard part, but it’s the execution of the plan by your advisor that is the hardest part. You might need your portfolio to deliver income over a 20- to 30-year horizon, and in those multiple decades there will be some crazy times in the market where a seasoned investment manager can truly add value. It might behoove a person to look for the most qualifid manager fist, then figue out the income plan, not the reverse. Why? Some advisors lead with the fiancial planning angle as the most important part, build you the plan, and then try to sell you products for the plan or outsource the management to a third party. They might be great with numbers and spreadsheets, but can they manage money in an ever-changing market? Ths is one of the most important questions you need to ask yourself while you’re evaluating an advisor.

Dear Olivia,

We are considering starting our mother on hospice services sometime soon, as her physician thinks that it might be time to keep her at home and prevent any further hospitalizations. She has been frail for some time now and he feels she may need this extra layer of support and care. How do we know when the time is right? Also, are there any supports our family can receive if we need to go out of town to see our grown children while she is on hospice service?

-Difficult decisions

Dear Difficult decisions,

It is often a difficult decision to put a loved one on hospice service, even when we know that may be the best way to provide the appropriate level of care. Skilled hospice care can provide comprehensive, holistic care to both the patient and family when someone is facing a terminal illness or condition.

Starting hospice at the right time is important to ensure that the care team has a chance

to get to know the patient and family and establish the best plan of care possible. The “right time” to transition someone to hospice is different for every family, but two important considerations are whether further aggressive treatment is desired, and if the patient would want to return to the hospital. If the answer to both questions is no, then this is often the right time to choose hospice care.

In terms of travel, one of the best benefits of hospice for families is a service called respite care. This is one of the levels of care we can provide. This allows a patient to stay in an inpatient setting, such as a nursing facility, for up to five consecutive days for caregiver relief. This means that the family can travel, see other loved ones, or even just have a much-needed respite from caregiving, knowing that their loved one is safe and being checked on daily by hospice staff. Hospice really can help families take care of loved ones as they navigate the challenges of endof-life care.

VNA Hospice Care focuses on living life to its fullest and treating you with the dignity and respect you deserve. As a nonprofit, our bottom line is patient support and care provided by our highly qualified staff.
