AN ABOUT-FACE

Most Texans don’t venture much north of Dallas, save to visit casinos. That’s changing in a big way, as Sherman, Texas, is making a big name for itself after several national and international heavyweights of industry can attest. With Texas Instruments’ recent announcement of a $29 billion (billion (with-a-‘b’) semiconductor plant to begin construction in early 2022, sufficto say that all eyes are now wide-open to the seemingly limitless untapped potential of Grayson County, and Sherman in particular.

In this issue, we look into the unique advantages and competitive business environment of Sherman, as we delve into Sherman’s growth and what it means for this burgeoning city of 45,000 people. Find out why Sherman is the place to work and raise a family on page 8.

Speaking of an about-face, when Cole Hauser ambled in to his fist scene in the hit show Yellowstone, most people had a hard time placing where they’d seen him before— so complete was the transformation of this previously clean-shaven actor from his previous roles.

Hauser’s nuanced portrayal of Yellowstone’s ranch foreman Rip Wheeler is in no small part dependent on a face that appears forged from years spent in the saddle, braving the elements. Sporting a dark, wiry beard and a wizened expression, Hauser’s faces conveys a multitude of emotions that range from fiece and vulnerable to rough and tender.

As Texans, we recognize that steely gaze and determination that comes from years spent working the land, which makes Hauser’s character so engrossing to watch. We catch up with the breakout star to learn about his Montana and Texas connections and to hear what’s next for this now bonafide cwboy starting on page 26.

Meanwhile, we have a lot more going on in this issue, including an insightful and timely article from Hodges Capital on everything you need to know about retirement income planning.

Be well!

Gradually, then Suddenly

SHERMAN BECOMES THE LATEST LONE STAR STATE BOOMTOWN

For most of the last 175 years, the eyes of Texas have rarely, if ever, wandered north of Dallas. In fact, most Texans would be hardpressed to say if there is much north of Dallas, save for the money-printing casinos of southern Oklahoma.

But just an hour north of Reunion Tower, nestled between the Red River and the sprawling suburbs of McKinney, sits Sherman, Texas, county seat of Grayson County. And over the last few months, the eyes of many Texans—not to mention several national and international heavyweights of industry—have been focused fimly upon this growing city of 45,000 people.

What they’ve seen here has catapulted this historic community to the forefront of Texas’s burgeoning high-tech economy. And with Texas Instruments’ November announcement of a $29 billion (with-a-‘b’) semiconductor plant to begin construction in early 2022, sufficto say that all eyes are now wide-open to the seemingly limitless untapped potential of Grayson County, and Sherman in particular.

“People have been saying for decades that growth was coming up Highway 75, but then it never really happened,” said Sherman Mayor David Plyler, the thrice-elected executive of the city. “It had really gotten to the point where people had cried ‘wolf’ for so long, no one really believed it was going to happen anymore. But after what we’ve seen in the last few years, there aren’t many doubters left”

It wasn’t a wolf, however, that showed up fist at Sherman’s door, but a Panda. Back in 2014, Dallas-based Panda Power Funds opened a state-of-the-art, 758-megawatt, combined-cycle natural gas power plant on Sherman’s south side, providing the city with a nearby source of consistent, environmentally-friendly power generation to supply its growing base of legacy manufacturers.

Then, in 2017, Finisar (since rebranded as “II-VI”) renovated a 700,000-square-foot building in Sherman, investing $390 million of Apple’s money to create an onshore production facility for iPhone chips. And with those 500 new jobs in hand, Sherman had offially announced itself as major combatant in the Metroplex’s internecine battle to woo the next great titan of industry.

8 • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022
COLLIN COUNTY • 9

“ That really put us on the map,” said Sherman City Manager Robby Hefton. “All of a sudden, the conversation switched from ‘Where’s Sherman?’ to ‘How soon can we come take a look?’ And as the jobs came, the rooftops quickly followed.”

With housing prices hovering just above $200k for a brick home, a steady stream of emigrants from cities further south and states far afild began to pay Sherman notice. A trickle of 100 new homes a year expanded to 150, then 200, and now 300 new housing starts each year—a number that’s expected to double in 2022.

But those housing numbers could soon look quaint. News broke in late November that Texas Instruments had selected Sherman over Singapore for a four-stage investment that will inject nearly $30 billion into the local economy. The new TI facility will be one of the largest factories in the United States when complete—on par with Tesla’s plant in Austin—and the 3,000 high-paying jobs that come along with it will deliver the type of growth that most cities only dream about.

“Sherman provides some unique advantages such as a competitive business environment, access to a highly trained technical workforce, and an existing supplier base,” said TI Senior Vice President of Technology and Manufacturing Kyle Flessner. “ The proximity to our other manufacturing operations in Dallas and Richardson will help us further scale our efforts and build on operational efficicies as we expand our 300-millimeter manufacturing presence in North Texas.”

TI’s decision made headlines in publications worldwide, as the company’s decision to create a long-term, domestic solution to the

chip shortage was monumental in more ways than one. Texas Governor Greg Abbott was quick to join the chorus of applause, noting that the Sherman facility will do much to cement the Lone Star State as a global leader in tech.

“In addition to bringing billions of dollars in capital investment and thousands of new jobs to North Texas, this historic expansion will keep Texas a national leader in semiconductor manufacturing while also strengthening the domestic semiconductor supply chain,” Abbott said. “I thank TI for choosing Sherman as the site for its four new semiconductor manufacturing facilities as we work together to keep Texas a global hub for innovation in advanced technology and manufacturing.”

It’s heady stufffor a community that heretofore was best known as the birthplace of country legend Buck Owens. But ‘Hee Haw’ notwithstanding, preparing for this type of growth has been no laughing matter for generations of Sherman’s community leaders.

After spending decades flexig political muscle to acquire water rights in nearby Lake Texoma, Sherman moved to capitalize on those rights in 2020 through a massive expansion of its water treatment facility. That $30-million (with-an-‘m’) investment gave the city far more water than it was able to use at the time, creating a reservoir of potential, should an opportunity like the TI plant ever come along. For those keeping score at home, that investment has now paid off1,000-fold for Sherman—an ROI that would make Choctaw Casinos blush.

“Sherman is unique compared to most of the other cities around DFW in that we control our own destiny when it comes to water,” said

10 • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2022
SHERMAN’S BOARDWALK BUILDING ANCHORS A REINVIGORATED DOWNTOWN FULL OF LOCALLY OWNED SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS.

Hefton, the city manager. “We are able to chart our own course when we need to make hard decisions. And we’re very fortunate in Sherman that our leaders have traditionally had the foresight to make sure we would have all the water we would need. And God continues to bless our community in ways that are unimaginable.”

Now, the flodgates are open. Literally hours after the TI announcement, Hefton’s phone was already ringing. Companies large and small have reached out to learn what made Sherman so attractive, and to be next in line to take advantage of what it has to offer.

“It’s easy for your eyes to get crossed on the $30 billion, but there’s going to be a very large impact, we believe, on other businesses that may be vertically aligned with TI—suppliers or customers—that want to be close to this plant and will be looking to relocate to Sherman,” Hefton told The Dallas Morning News. “And we’re prepared for them as well.”

So, water? Check.

Jobs? Check.

Affordable housing? Write a small check.

And as for quality-of-life, well, that’s the mayor’s forte. Sherman hosts perhaps the largest free concert series in Texas, with big-names like 70s disco king KC and the Sunshine Band, 80s powerhouse .38 Special, 90s chart-toppers Fuel, and Texas-country superstar Koe Wetzel, just to name a few.

“I mean, Elvis has played in Sherman; we have a tradition to uphold,” said Plyler with a laugh, referencing a possibly-apocryphal 60s

visit by The King. “People can pay their fiy bucks and see a lot of these country acts in Dallas whenever they want, but to see some of these big-name rock acts—that’s just not something that anyone else is offering. And we do it for free.”

Add to that a brand-new high school that opened last year, a re-blossoming historic downtown chockfull of locally-owned shops and restaurants, and city property taxes that are among the lowest in the state, and what you have is a recipe for sustained success that extends far beyond the big-tech headlines.

“It’s pretty remarkable, how quickly it’s all come together,” said Plyler. “You spend all these years preparing for growth, but when it arrives is out of your hands. All you can do is plant the seeds and wait for nature to do its thing.”

Those seeds needed water, and that part was already taken care of. They needed a nutrient-rich medium to take root, provided in this context by the aforementioned work in public education and conservative government. But they needed something else to sprout; some combination of luck and opportunity that would provide Sherman’s moment in the spotlight.

It was Hemingway who coined “Gradually, then suddenly,” in his 1926 book The Sun Also Rises, and it seems an apt phrase for what’s happened in Sherman in the last few years—incremental growth, followed by a day in the sun in which everything comes together.

And now that the sun has risen in Sherman, it seems the day may have only just begun.

Dear Olivia,

We are considering starting our mother on hospice services sometime soon, as her physician thinks that it might be time to keep her at home and prevent any further hospitalizations. She has been frail for some time now and he feels she may need this extra layer of support and care. How do we know when the time is right? Also, are there any supports our family can receive if we need to go out of town to see our grown children while she is on hospice service?

-Difficult decisions

Dear Difficult decisions,

It is often a difficult decision to put a loved one on hospice service, even when we know that may be the best way to provide the appropriate level of care. Skilled hospice care can provide comprehensive, holistic care to both the patient and family when someone is facing a terminal illness or condition.

Starting hospice at the right time is important to ensure that the care team has a chance

to get to know the patient and family and establish the best plan of care possible. The “right time” to transition someone to hospice is different for every family, but two important considerations are whether further aggressive treatment is desired, and if the patient would want to return to the hospital. If the answer to both questions is no, then this is often the right time to choose hospice care.

In terms of travel, one of the best benefits of hospice for families is a service called respite care. This is one of the levels of care we can provide. This allows a patient to stay in an inpatient setting, such as a nursing facility, for up to five consecutive days for caregiver relief. This means that the family can travel, see other loved ones, or even just have a much-needed respite from caregiving, knowing that their loved one is safe and being checked on daily by hospice staff. Hospice really can help families take care of loved ones as they navigate the challenges of endof-life care.

VNA Hospice Care focuses on living life to its fullest and treating you with the dignity and respect you deserve. As a nonprofit, our bottom line is patient support and care provided by our highly qualified staff.

How Prevalent is Hearing Loss in America?

How prevalent is hearing loss in America? You may be surprised! Nearly a fih of all Americans 12 years or older have enough hearing loss to make communication difficult, according to a new study led by Johns Hopkins researchers and published in the Nov. 14 Archives of Internal Medicine.

The fidings, thought to be the fist nationally representative estimate of hearing loss, suggest that many more people than previously thought are affected by this condition. The study was led by Frank Lin, M.D., Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine

Using the World Health Organization's defintion for hearing loss (not being able to hear sounds of 25 decibels or less in the speech frequencies), the researchers found that overall, about 30 million Americans, or 12.7% of the population, had hearing loss in both ears. That number jumps to about 48 million, or 20.3%, for people who have hearing loss in at least one ear. These numbers far surpass previous estimates of 21 to 29 million.

Hearing loss prevalence nearly doubled with every age decade, with women and blacks being signifiantly less likely to have hearing loss at any age. Lin and his colleagues aren't sure why these groups appear to be protected. However, he notes that the female hormone estrogen, as well as the melanin pigment in darker skin, could have a protective effect on the inner ear.

In the meantime, Lin says, the new numbers greatly impact the work he and other researchers are doing on hearing loss and its consequences, which, according to previous studies, include cognitive decline, dementia, and poor physical functioning. Lin’s research also looked at a link between hearing loss and the risk of falling in middle aged-adults and the elderly. They found that hearing loss triples the risk!

Another link that exists is between diabetes and hearing loss. According to the American Diabetes Association, it’s estimated that 25.8 million Americans (children and adults) have diabetes—that’s 8.3% of the population. There are certainly many complications from diabetes that are well known such as heart disease, kidney disease, blindness, stroke, high blood pressure and peripheral neuropathy.

However, one of the most common and yet least understood and diagnosed complication of diabetes is hearing loss. In a 2008 study, it was found that diabetics have approximately a 30% higher incidence of hearing loss than patients with normal blood sugar. Over 50% of those participating in the study showed a high frequency hearing loss, which is one of the most common types of hearing loss and the type effectively treated with hearing aids. The study also showed a correlate between pre-diabetes and hearing loss.

Diabetes can lead to nerve damage. Neuropathy occurs when high blood sugars cause chemical changes in nerves that impair their ability to transmit signals. Hearing also depends on nerves of the peripheral auditory mechanism. It’s believed that over time high blood glucose levels damage these nerves diminishing the ability to hear. High blood sugar is also known to damage vascular systems. Diabetes can damage the blood vessels in the ear similar to the retina. The structures of the ear have a delicate blood supply, which is susceptible to disruption due to diabetes. Ths interruption can result in damage to the sensory structures of the ear, therefore causing or contributing to hearing loss.

Finally, the study looked at the link between how long someone has lived with diabetes and the severity of their hearing loss. Specifially, it was found that 75% of individuals who had diabetes for more than eight years experienced a moderate to severe hearing loss.

So, if you or a loved one has been diagnosed with diabetes or is classifid as pre-diabetic, it’s important to have your hearing screened. If a hearing loss is suspected, a full hearing test would be recommended. Contact your audiologist today.

This gives us the real scope of the problem for the first time and shows us how big of a problem hearing loss really is," Lin says. The moral of the story is that it’s a good idea to have your hearing tested throughout your life. See an audiologist today and stay connected.

NEW YEAR’S CHECKLIST

Throughout history, the New Year has always been representative of a new beginning. Every January 1st presents us all with the opportunity to take an inventory of last year’s resolutions and recommit ourselves to a new set of goals. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, many will add “getting affirs in order” to their list of aspirations for 2022. Many people think only of a Will when contemplating the legal documents necessary to protect their future. However, there are more documents and considerations in developing a well-rounded estate plan. Every estate plan ought to include the following documents:

2 Durable Power of Attorney

2 Medical Power of Attorney

2 Directive to Physicians and Family or Surrogates (Living Will)

2 Authorization to Release Medical Information (HIPAA Authorization)

2 Declaration of Guardian

2 Will

2 Long-term Care Insurance

Although often overlooked, a Durable Power of Attorney and a Medical Power of Attorney are critical parts of long-term care planning, since they designate the person or persons who will be acting for you in the event you are unable to handle your own fiancial and health care decisions. Without these documents, no one, not even your spouse, is legally authorized to handle your fiances or make medical decisions for you.

Your estate planning documents are extremely powerful and should be executed after great contemplation. The people you appoint to act on your behalf as your agents should be those you trust fully to handle your affirs now, as well as when you cannot handle them on your own. If you do not trust the person you have named to act for you right now, be careful about naming that person to act for you when you are incapacitated. Often people appoint spouses, adult children, or other family members as agents to keep affirs private and to avoid hurting feelings. However, appointing a family member may not always be the best option. In all cases, signing estate planning documents should be done only after deep reflction as to the abilities and trustworthiness of each candidate.

In addition to the essential legal documents listed above, another planning area that warrants early and informed consideration is preparing for the cost of funding long-term care. Long-term care differs from other types of healthcare, in that the goal of long-term care is not to cure an illness, but to provide an individual with support so they can maintain an optimal level of functioning. Some people want to stay in their homes as long as possible and bring in outside help to make that possible. Others want the freedom from home maintenance that a senior residence community offers. There is a wide range of living arrangements

for seniors, from retirement communities to assisted living facilities to skilled nursing facilities. There exists a long-standing myth that Medicare will cover all our healthcare needs, including the cost of long-term care. The reality is that Medicare provides support only in limited situations. Notably, Medicare does not pay for assisted living, memory care, or long-term custodial care in skilled nursing facilities.

Some people are fortunate to have the ability to private pay for long-term care, which ranges from $3,000–$16,000/month in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Others have long-term care insurance (an insurance policy designed to cover long-term healthcare expenses that are not covered by health insurance or Medicare). However, long-term care insurance may not be available if you have certain existing health problems, and the costs and premiums can rise as you age. Therefore, it is important to investigate the availability of long-term care insurance as early as possible. If you cannot qualify for long-term care insurance, there are fiancial options that may fit your circumstances and provide similar coverage. Professionals who work primarily with seniors, such as Elder Law attorneys, can often provide connections to a community of support agencies and other professionals who may be of assistance to you as you explore your options.

Ths year, resolve to take the time to crafta thoughtful, and thorough, estate plan. Educate yourself on your options, and seek qualifid professional advice on legal documents, healthcare, insurance, and fiancial planning. A little planning now goes a long way towards ensuring that you and your loved ones are protected, no matter what the future holds. RANCH HAND

YELLOWSTONE ’S COLE HAUSER BRINGS HEART AND SOUL TO COWBOY ROLE.

When Cole Hauser ambled in to his fist scene in the Paramount series Yellowstone, it took more than a few episodes to place where you’d seen the actor before.

Hauser’s transformation from the clean-shaven actor who fist appeared in 1992’s School Ties, followed by such films as Good Will Hunting, Pitch Black, Olympus Has Fallen, Transcendence, and 2 Fast 2 Furious, was such that it completely took viewers by surprise.

Sporting a dark, wiry beard, substantial heft,a worn cowboy hat, and steely gaze, Hauser’s portrayal of Yellowstone’s ranch foreman Rip Wheeler is engrossing. A complex character that is both fiece yet vulnerable, rough yet tender, his deftperformance leaves women watching the show swooning and the men wanting to be him.

In a show that highlights ranching, wildlife conflits, and politics amid fiey family drama and corrupt land developers, Rip serves as the show’s moral compass of sorts. The perfect foil to John Dutton, the hardened ranching patriarch of the Yellowstone ranch skillfully played by Kevin Costner, Rip’s storyline is rich in contrasts.

“He is quiet, cool, and breathes everything that is Montana. Rip Wheeler is someone who is not very modern, who is more old school in his loyalties and in the way he acts. I realized this is something that needs to be portrayed, and I wanted to do it,” explained Hauser to Guns & Ammo’s Mike Schooby on his motivation to take on the role.

COLLIN COUNTY • 27

In addition to wanting to work with Yellowstone’s two creators, Taylor Sheridan and John Linson and being intrigued with Rip’s character, Hauser also saw the job as a way to connect with the rural life he experienced as a child, as well as a chance to explore his deep personal ties to Montana.

“I grew up on a really nice ranch in Oregon for about four years,” he told Bobbie Jean Sawyer of Wide Open Country. “ Those were my earliest memories of being a kid.”

Meanwhile, Hauser’s dad’s family hails from Helena, Montana. Recently, Hauser and his eldest son researched the family to learn his great-great grandfather, Samual T. Hauser, helped fund the Louis and Clark Expedition.

“ There is a lake named after him and all kinds of stuff. We went on this little history tour. He was a really special guy, a pioneer in many ways. He has been there since 1870. Thik about that area in 1870, there was nothing out there. He came through the Great Lakes and into Montana, that’s wild. Samual T. Hauser was the fist governor of Montana. I have always had this love for the state but didn’t really know why. It makes so much sense now. I mean, my family has been there since the beginning of time,” he told Courtney Rodgers of the Havoc Journal.

Although he spent time on a ranch growing up and performed some rodeo stunts for The High-Lo Country, a 1998 Western he starred in opposite Sam Elliott and Woody Harrelson, Hauser considered himself a novice horseman before Yellowstone

“Taylor Sheridan, Ross Coleman and all these cowboys put me through the works. They had me on horses every day, different horses, different saddles and after a lot of work, I can say now I am a ‘rider,’ but before I was not. I now know about my feet and ankles and what they should be doing versus yanking a horse around by his neck,” said Hauser to Schoby.

While becoming a horseman worthy of Yellowstone took some doing, 46-year-old Hauser didn’t require much practice for the fiearms part of being a cowboy. An avid hunter who advocates for gun ownership rights, his stance is an anomaly in Hollywood.

“Listen, my right as an American is to own guns. Responsibility is a big deal to me. Have we as a community forgotten a little bit about

responsibility? Possibly. But in my household, no,” he told Guns & Ammo. “All my children know how to shoot and handle fiearms safely. They will always know how to shoot, and they will be able to protect themselves, in every way they can. But gun ownership really all boils down to personal responsibility.”

Hauser has hunted in Texas, Montana, and other places around the West and holds a deep respect for the age-old practice. He won’t shoot anything that he doesn’t intend on eating and shuns the use of riding around in a truck or employing anything other than old school methods.

“When you hunt at the highest level, without bait, feeders, etcetera, and you fially get the one you are after, after walking miles, there is a certain amount of respect you have for that animal as well as respect for the process. I don’t think non-hunters really understand that. They may go to Whole Foods to buy meat, and they don’t really think about where it came from. When you walked for it and really hunted it and butchered it and stocked your freezer with it and now your kids are eating it, it is just a different feeling.”

It’s this ethos of a multifaceted, extremely interesting, deep-thinking, heartfelt, strong American man that Hauser embraces for this once-in-a-lifetime role, one which he suspected would resonate strongly with viewers.

“RIP WHEELER IS SOMEONE WHO IS NOT VERY MODERN, WHO IS MORE OLD SCHOOL IN HIS LOYALTIES AND IN THE WAY HE ACTS.”

“It obviously wasn’t what it is now. But there were people throughout the country who were watching very closely right out of the gates,” he told writer Joe Leydon for Cowboys and Indians. “And then I think it’s bled into the younger crowd, which has been really cool to see over the last couple of years. There are

more and more younger people coming up to me and talking about this show then there were initially. I meant, I was at a high school football game the other day here in Florida, and I was shocked that 16-year-olds, 14-yearolds, 18-year-olds—male and female—are watching the show and are blown away and love it.”

While Hauser credits Kevin Costner for much of the show’s early buzz, he’s been surprised about the outpouring of love for his character Rip. “He’s not somebody that Taylor and I thought, ‘Oh well, people, men and women, are just going to love this guy.’ I think that’s been a happy surprise for us both. And to see the response in the public to the character—for me, personally, it’s just been a real blessing.”

Yellowstone fans will be pleased to know that the show’s popularity has spawned two highly anticipated spinoffs Y:1883, s prequel starring Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as John Dutton’s ancestors James and Margaret Dutton and 6666, set in Texas.

In case you can’t get enough of Hauser, he has two films set to debut in 2022—Muti, a thriller with Morgan Freeman, and Panama, an action-adventure co-starring Mel Gibson.

A happily married (sorry ladies) father of three, Hauser lives in Florida and puts just as much effort into his family as he does his thriving career. “I am pretty good about compartmentalizing working and family. They are two of my biggest passions. I am not the kind of guy who forgets about them.”

A Smile to Smile About

There is a famous quote from Mother Teresa that says: “Let us always meet each other with smile, for a smile is the beginning of love.” I couldn’t think of a more beautiful way to share the vast importance of having a beautiful smile.

A smile is often the fist thing we notice about someone, and with it we impose love, laughter, joy, and many other positive emotions that ultimately shape lives. The fact that we can change someone’s day and how they feel about us and their circumstances just because of the appearance of a smile cannot be underestimated. That is why I want to talk to you about smile makeovers.

Because of the effect of years and life, our teeth can start to decline, and it becomes evident when we smile. Stains, cracks, trauma, decay, or crooked teeth all give the appearance that our teeth are struggling, and it is often accompanied by decreasing the confidece of the person. I cannot tell you how many times I have noticed people who alter their normal smile to hide something with their teeth that embarrasses them.

Years of not smiling in a relaxed way will also create wrinkles in less than desirable ways around the lips. I also cannot tell you how many times we have created a new smile for a patient and it becomes life changing. The process is easier than you probably think. It all starts with a consultation with a cosmetic dentist to explore the possibilities. Ths article will help you understand several of the options available to help you achieve the smile you have always dreamed of having.

Teeth Whitening

The fist and most common procedure we offer patients is teeth whitening. Ths is the simplest way to freshen up your smile and it can be done in-officor at home. Using a Zoom whitening system, whitening in-officis the quickest way to whiten your teeth, allowing the patient to spend less time thinking about the process, and more time spent with work or family. Whitening at home is accomplished with custom trays, enhancing your teeth from the comfort of your home.

Orthodontics

The second option is often orthodontics. Using Invisalign, crooked teeth are straightened and moved into proper position. Ths allows easier cleaning and fewer issues for food traps, gum irritations, and

traumatic biting relationships prematurely wearing down teeth. Invisalign trays are custom given to the patient in a series for a patient to wear, slowly moving teeth into proper alignment, giving a healthier mouth and better cosmetic appearance.

Crowns

Another excellent option, crowns. Crowns are wonderful for patients because many things are accomplished at the same time and can be completed very quickly. Teeth that are worn down, crooked, or discolored can be covered with shaded/whitened crowns to give a natural and beautiful white smile.

Many patients choose to makeover their smile in one day with crowns and get an instant life-changing effect! Crowns are great options for those who have struggled clenching their teeth throughout life and have lost too much of their tooth structure. Crowns, when taken care of, can last a very long time and are quite sturdy and strong. The goal with using crowns is to accomplish a beautiful smile that fits the patient naturally and makes them look younger.

Invest in Your Smile

Investing in your smile is exactly that—an investment. It is an investment in your confidece, your personality, your health, and your relationships. Cosmetic dentistry is some of the most incredibly rewarding dentistry that I offer. It is exciting each and every time to be able to play a part in helping someone achieve the look they have envisioned for themselves.

At the end of the day, we get one walk through this journey of life. Why not live life to the fullest in the manner which brings out the best and most confidet version of ourselves? For women, it might be to create a smile that sparkles with elegance. For men, perhaps the aim is to create something that looks professional. Whoever the person or whatever the desire, the wonderful thing is that there are several options available that can help provide the means necessary for making your desires a reality.

Don’t put it offany longer. Get the smile you can truly smile for! Give Allen Dental Center a call today or visit us online to start your smile makeover journey immediately.

Everything You Need to Know About Retirement Income Planning

Those of you inching closer to retirement are probably wondering how your golden years will work from a fiancial standpoint. Ths is a natural curiosity, as you will one day need to replicate your income from your savings and other sources. While this might sound like a daunting task, it’s actually pretty simple to illustrate. I think that the advisory and planning industry provides too much detail around the topic and it might be explained in a way

that is confusing or downright scary. I’ll attempt to alleviate those feelings as we walk through a simple example. Most of you probably have a good handle on your income sources and expenses. The goal now is to figue out your known sources of income. Typical sources:

• Social Security

• Employer Pension

• Rental Property

These are all hypothetical numbers for illustrative purposes

Social Security (spouses combined): $4,000 mo................................$48,000 yr

Pension: $5,000 mo................................$60,000 yr

Rental Property (net of expenses): $1,500 mo................................$18,000 yr

Sub-Total: $10,500 mo............................$126,000 yr

Now, let’s add-in the effects of $1,000,000 in investible money from all accounts. Let’s assume the income producing stocks and bonds in the portfolio throws off 2.5% er year.

Then we need to figue out variable income from all your investment accounts; IRAs, Individual Accounts, Joint Accounts, 401ks, etc. These accounts will be invested and will be throwing offincome from the investments you own, plus appreciation (over time). Ths income can be added to all of your known sources, and voila, you have your retirement income plan. To give you more peace of mind, let’s plug in some numbers:

$1,000,000 @ 2.5%.............................................................$25,000

Total…………………………………..………………$151,000*

COLLIN COUNTY • 37
Continued on next page

“Ths is all well and good, but I need more income.” I get this request pretty often, so there’s more that one can harvest from their investment accounts to get that extra income. Let’s use the same example as the couple with the $1 million in investible accounts. Let’s say they need $50,000 per year (5%) from the aggregate of all their accounts. Well, as shown above, half of it (2.5%) is already coming in from dividends and bond coupons, so where does the other 2.5% come from. The answer is the appreciation of the portfolio. That’s right, at the end of the day you are indifferent from getting $50,000 a year in dividends vs. selling $50,000 worth of your investments.** It’s all just money! Ths is a concept called total return. It’s your investment income + the appreciation over time.

You might be saying to yourself, “Well, that seems like I’m digging into principal, and I am not comfortable with that.” I get this question by virtually every client, and here’s my simple answer. As long as your total return, over time, is in excess of your withdrawals, your principal will continue to grow over time.

The next natural question (and I’ll spare you from having to ask) is how does this work in a recession and a bear market? It’s a fair question and one that deserves an answer. Given that the duration of market cycles can vary, and trying to predict the next big downturn is a fool’s errand, it’s always good to have a cash cushion that makes a person comfortable. Perhaps one to two years’ worth of cash needs should be kept in a money market? When the market takes that big dip, you can now draw from your cushion without having to sell anything during the down period. Once the market comes back, you replenish the cash you have taken out by selectively selling when things have rebounded. The specificsof how your portfolio should be allocated is an exercise that all clients should have with their advisor.

A quick note on financial planning:

The essence of a plan is showing a person how to get income by pulling various levers at various times. There really isn’t much more to it than that. Where the artistry comes into play is helping a client figue out when it’s best to pull each lever. For example, should I take social security as early as I can or should I defer? Should I start taking distributions from my IRA now, or wait until age 72 when the Required Minimum Distribution kicks in?

All of these variables can be worked out when talking to a client and running scenarios. Sure, there could always be some one-offsalong the way. Perhaps you want to sell a rental property, or you might be getting an inheritance. All of these can be accounted for and baked into your income plan when they occur. Again, putting together the plan is not the hard part, but it’s the execution of the plan by your advisor that is the hardest part. You might need your portfolio to deliver income over a 20- to 30-year horizon, and in those multiple decades there will be some crazy times in the market where a seasoned investment manager can truly add value. It might behoove a person to look for the most qualifid manager fist, then figue out the income plan, not the reverse. Why? Some advisors lead with the fiancial planning angle as the most important part, build you the plan, and then try to sell you products for the plan or outsource the management to a third party. They might be great with numbers and spreadsheets, but can they manage money in an ever-changing market? Ths is one of the most important questions you need to ask yourself while you’re evaluating an advisor.

Speak YOUR

Mind

My dad was, in one sense, a man of few words. His words were well chosen and spoken with a tone of confidece that literally dared you to challenge him. While everyone might not agree with him completely on a particular subject, it was hard to say that he was totally wrong because he whole-heartedly believed in his position.

When my dad died in 1995, as a family, we had no doubt what the appropriate things to do were in planning his funeral and burial. His professional demeanor and desire to be well-dressed led us to select his best dark colored suit, white shirt, and a bold tie. His love of God and care and concern for his friends and colleagues made it right and fitting to hold his funeral at his church. His planning in advance and selecting the exact spot near a beautiful, large magnolia tree in the local cemetery where he and my mother would ultimately be laid side by side eliminated the need for discussion regarding this fial disposition.

As I sat in the pew, deep in my own grief, I could not have been more proud of my dad. The words spoken by the pastor, a man who knew my dad so well, recalled experiences they had shared and words of encouragement and guidance that my dad had offered during difficult times. The song sung by the vocalist reflcted a life lived by serving others. Finally, after the prayer at the cemetery, the bright, blue, crisp December sky swallowed up the colorful balloons we all released with our personal notes of “Good-Bye” attached. In spite of how difficult and sad the that occasion was for me and my family, looking back, I now feel so happy and proud that because we knew our dad so well and understood his attitudes, creating a meaningful and appropriate tribute to his life came naturally. While writing this article, I have stopped on two occasions to take phone calls from people who are currently dealing with family members who are terminally ill and near death. Both families are just now beginning their search for information about funeral options and cost. Neither caller had discussed the subject with their family member who was ill, and unfortunately, “last minute” talks along that line can be extremely difficult and uncomfortable. So, as always, be sure family members know where you stand on important issues.

As I close this issue’s article, I would like to offer a word of exceeding thanks to all of our military men and women who are courageously serving our country around the world. Additionally, I want to thank all of those who have previously served as well.

Feel like Youagain.

SPORTS EYE SAFETY TIPS

Did you know that more than  25,000 people  seek treatment for sports-related eye injuries each year? Damage to your eyes can have lasting effects extending beyond pain during the initial blow—it can lead to vision issues over time.

Protecting Your Eyes While Playing Sports

Keep reading to learn more about common conditions that could affect your game, and how to protect your vision from our team at Key-Whitman Eye Center.

Keep Your Eyes Healthy on the Field

Whether you’re competing in a game with friends or are hitting the fild for some exercise, here are some tips to keep your eyes safe:

• Consider wearing contacts or shatter-proof glasses.

• Wear sunglasses when possible to prevent UV damage.

• Protect your eyes by wearing a helmet with an attached shield, goggles, or safety glasses.

• Keep your safety glasses clean.

• Have your vision checked if you sustain an injury.

Eye Conditions That Could Limit Your Ability

In addition to preventing damage to your eyes, it’s important to know which conditions can affect your athletic ability. Certain eye conditions can limit your ability to play sports, such as nearsightedness and cataracts.

Patients with  nearsightedness  have trouble with long-distance vision, which can make it difficult to play fild sports such as baseball, soccer, or football.

Patients with  cataracts  may experience blurred or distorted vision, making completing daily activities and competing in sports difficult.

Warning Signs of Eye Conditions

While many patients think it’s okay to ignore eye issues, this won’t make them go away and can potentially damage your eyes more.

If you are experiencing any of the following  symptoms or other abnormalities  with your eyes, contact your ophthalmologist for an appointment:

• Sudden or severe eye pain.

• Sudden vision changes or loss.

• Heavy eye discharge.

• Burning and itching of the eye.

• Blurred, hazy, or double vision.

• Seeing flashes of light.

• Changes in the color of the iris.

• White areas in the pupil.

Thousands of people all over North Texas have chosen Key-Whitman Eye Center because of our consistently excellent care for our patients. Learn more about our practice and how we help patients get their best vision possible. Contact Key-Whitman today for a consultation!

SAging and the Benefits of Exercise

ocrates once said, “No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.” It’s true that changes occurs as we age, but just as true, is the body’s ability to respond to exercise. As age increases, individuals should remain optimistic because our muscles respond to training with marked and rapid gains into the ninth decade of life1 and beyond.

Many people realize that exercise is profitable. Physiologically many benefits, such as improved bone density, muscular strength, and standing balance, are evident. Functional status with regular exercise may minimize or even reverse physical frailty. Regular exercise also provides an effective means to diminish orthopedic injury, including those related to falls, in the aging population. Ths can be an effective means to address conditions such as sarcopenia (muscle weakness and atrophy), osteopenia or osteoporosis (decreased bone density) as well as balance deficts.

Exercise also helps the lungs, or pulmonary system. When individuals maintain physical activity, their lungs work to supply oxygen to the muscular system and throughout the body. Both aerobic (endurance) and anaerobic (strengthening) exercise make the lungs stronger. As peoples’ physical fitness improves so does the ability of their body to transport oxygen more efficitly in the bloodstream and to the body’s various life-giving organs. Enhanced oxygenation helps individuals to become less short of breath over time. According to the American Lung Association, targeted exercises that strengthen the neck, chest, and back muscles can help to promote effective inhalation and exhalation. Maintenance of healthy lungs is also essential in diminishing the likelihood of infections such as pneumonia.

Exercise has unquestionable benefits for the cardiovascular system as well. For instance, an article published by the American Heart Association and written by Johnathan Myers (2003) reported that patients who were recently diagnosed with heart disease and participated in an exercise program were said to have an earlier return to work as well as increased measures of quality of life, such as self-confidece, lower anxiety, and stress. Myers also noted that research has discovered that heart attack patients who participate in formal exercise programs have a reduction in death rate by 20-25%. Other benefits of sustained exercise and physical activity include increased exercise tolerance, lower

body weight, reduced blood pressure, decreased bad (LDL and total) cholesterol as well as improved good (HDL) cholesterol. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise (or activity) per week. Ths can be done by traditional means of exercise (e.g., weights; treadmill; jogging) or physical activity (e.g., housework; yardwork). It is important to engage in exercise or activity that is enjoyable. Research has demonstrated this promotes adherence over time. Socrates correctly has said that the body has strength and beauty as well as the ability to respond to exercise. Some good questions to ask oneself in considering the topic of physical exercise and activity include:

What forms of exercise or physical activity do I find enjoyable?

Is there someone who can keep me accountable?

What are my personal goals for engaging in exercise?

Am I engaging in adequate levels of exercise (>/= 150 minutes/week)?

An intentional pursuit of exercise can enhance health, vitality, and quality of life.

MANAGE YOUR PAIN DIFFERENTLY

If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis (low bone density) and have also tried treatments like rest and oral medication for more than a few days and still have sharp back pain, you may have a spinal fracture, also known as a vertebral compression fracture (VCF).

Balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) is a treatment for spinal fractures due to osteoporosis, non-cancerous tumors, and cancer. BKP has been shown in clinical studies to alleviate pain and reduce prescription opioids, compared to patients treated with non-surgical management, such as bracing and bed rest.1-3

While not all treatments have the same benefits for everyone, talk to your doctor about your options and whether BKP may be an option for you.

Although the complication rate for balloon kyphoplasty is low, as with most surgical procedures, serious adverse events, some of which can be fatal, can occur, including heart attack, cardiac arrest (heart stops beating), stroke, and embolism (blood, fat, or cement that migrates to the lungs or heart). Other risks include infection; leakage of bone cement into the muscle and tissue surrounding the spinal cord, and nerve injury that can, in rare instances, cause paralysis; leakage of bone cement into the blood vessels resulting in damage to the blood vessels, lungs, and/or heart.
