Switching gears from medicine, we do a 180 and jump into entertainment by shining the spotlight on Jennifer Lopez. She is many things, an actress, singer, dancer, style icon, mom, entrepreneur, and dreamer. The multi-hyphenate star has lived several lifetimes in her 52 years, yet you’d never guess Lopez’s age. After working nonstop for decades, she looks and feels better than ever.
Lopez doesn’t intend to slow down anytime soon. In fact, she’s had quite a year or two, but doesn’t she always? We touch base with this superstar and find out what keeps her going and motivates her to be the best she can be on page 24.
While Lopez may be getting better with age, one thing that rarely ages well is hearing. One of the body’s most remarkable senses, according to audiologist Dr. Elizabeth Brassine, hearing integrates with our brains to help us connect with the world around us. However, as we age, our ability to hear declines. For 48 million Americans—or nearly one in five ages 12 and older—this is precisely the case.
Dr. Brassine discusses the options available to the hearing impaired on page 17. The good news, while hearing loss typically can’t be reversed, most cases can be managed with the help of an audiologist and hearing aids. Before you shudder at the thought of hearing aids, check our her article.
As always, there’s more. Dive in and enjoy!
Be well!

or board-certified, fellowship trained orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Stephen P. Courtney, patients come first. It’s an ethos that developed early on in his life and one that has helped guide him in his journey to earn a distinguished reputation among his professional colleagues, medical peers and, most importantly,
Dr. Courtney began his medicine career from the ground up. While a teenager, he spent summers work ing in a rural north Louisiana hospital. As an orderly, he was an integral part of the hospital environment. While not a glorified job, cleaning bed pans, changing bed sheets, cleaning patient rooms, helping medical practitioners, and assisting patients, offered him an invaluable glimpse into the hard work and dedication necessary to succeed in the medical field. The job also served as the catalyst for his decision to pursue med
Inspired by the patients he’s cared for there, Dr. Courtney made education a priority. He was salutatorian of his high school class and went on to graduate summa cum laude from Northeast Louisiana University. While at Louisiana State University Medical School, he utilized his summer to perform spine biomechan ical tests on human spine cadavers utilizing pedicle screws. Considered cutting edge biomechanics and technology at that time, most spine surgeons didn’t even know they existed yet. However, Dr. Courtney performed one of the first biomechanical tests on those implants. It was a feat that earned him the How medica Biomechanic Award and the Louisiana Orthopedic Association Award. He also placed fourth in the
Dr. Courtney’s residency at Texas A&M University Medical Center and further specialty training through a fellowship at Florida Neck & Back Institute in Gainesville, Florida, additionally cemented his strong med ical foundation. From there, he continued to gain more knowledge and insight on how to help his patients with useful tools, while recognizing there was room for much improvement in the tools at hand.
This realization inspired Dr. Courtney to design, develop, biomechanically test, complete FDA testing and oversee quality control and validation on a host of tools he created. To date, Dr. Courtney has devel oped nine spinal product lines and obtained nine patents and 14 trademarks on spine related products.
When he’s not traveling the country training other physicians on how to utilize his products, Dr. Court ney dedicates himself to the patients of his own medical practice, Advanced Spine Center.
I
like to set goals, as it gives me more incentive to stay focused and helps me determine what I want to accomplish and work toward. Accomplishing my goal and finishing something I didn’t think I could do helps me push through.
”
Led by Dr. Courtney, the skilled team at Advanced Spine Center cares for patients with neck and back pain using a wide array of the most state-of-the-art tools and techniques—from conservative physical therapy and injection therapy—to advanced pain management, as well as surgical intervention. We employ the latest in minimally invasive spine surgeries, in addition to cutting-edge replacement technology. Incorporating both high tech and high touch, we get our valued patients back to their lives so they can enjoy all the activities they love.
“We employ the latest in minimally-invasive spine surgeries, in addition to cutting-edge replacement technology, incorporating both high tech and high touch,” says Dr. Courtney.
The medical field is not the only arena in which Dr. Courtney excels. He approaches fitness with the same dedication and vigor he applies to medicine. In 2005, Dr. Courtney was in the top 10 of his age group in mountain biking in Texas. He also completed one of the largest cycling events in the country multiple times: the “Hotter’N Hell” race. Always up for a new challenge, from there, he began training to compete in triathlons.
“Swimming added a whole new challenge for me and really pushed me,” says Dr. Courtney of training for triathlons, where participants are required to bike, run, and swim. “I like to set goals, as it gives me more incentive to stay focused and helps me determine what I want to accomplish and work toward. Accomplishing my goal and finishing something I didn’t think I could do helps me push through.”
Dr. Courtney trains for triathlons with the same focus he uses as a surgeon. Waking up at 4 a.m. six days per week to work out in his home gym, he never waivers from the goal at hand—exceeding his
personal best. After successfully completing multiple triathlons, Dr. Courtney shows no signs of slowing down. He continues to train and looks forward to competing in many more triathlons.
“I think if you can survive a triathlon you are absolutely living well,” he says.
Paying attention to fitness is something he encourages his patients to consider, too. “People don’t have to be a tri-athlete to be healthy. I like to tell people you need to start small. Do something to be active. It can even be yard work—that’s a great workout too. As you get older especially, you need to be in tune with your body, monitor your calorie intake and be active. I encourage people to change slowly, start small, and find out what you like to do,” he says.
Sharing his wellness journey is part of the straight-forward, honest approach that puts his patients at ease and creates a trusting bond, an important element for the highly technical operations Dr. Courtney performs to help restore patients’ quality of life. As he learned early on, the single most important person in the treatment process is the patient and well-informed patients are more successful in following through on their rehabilitation and have better outcomes.
It’s a sentiment that his patients echo. “You don’t want to trust (your back) to just somebody that has his name on a door. You have to go to people that you trust. I talked to people and everybody trusted Dr. Stephen Courtney and I do too and I’d highly recommend him,” says Judy Jones, a lumbar fusion patient of Dr. Courtney’s.
“Above all, I believe in treating each and every patient I have with honesty, dignity, and respect. My patients come away from our shared interactions feeling confident, assured that they are truly in the best hands,” says Dr. Courtney, who always brings his A-game.
Corny dogs, Big Tex and Midway rides! All the iconic elements of the State Fair of Texas® are back. After a year’s absence, Big Tex is welcoming fairgoers with this year’s theme: “Howdy, Folks!” The 135-year tradition of family fun starts Sept. 24 and runs through Oct. 17.
If your plans include riding DART, here are some helpful tips for a smooth experience.
Skip traffic and parking expenses—take the Green Line, which drops you off right at the Main Gate (Fair Park Station) or a couple of blocks from Gate 6 near the Cotton Bowl (MLK, Jr. Station).
Park for free at any one of DART’s Park & Ride stations. Each of DART’s four light rail lines has numerous points in downtown Dallas where you can transfer to the Green Line. And if you’re riding the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) or DCTA A-train, transfers are a snap—both connect directly to the Green Line at Victory Station.
DART encourages all riders to buy their passes with one of our
contactless fare payment options—either the GoPass® app, GoPass Tap® card, or the new contactless payment option of using your contactless credit or debit card or contactless-enabled mobile device. These are the safest and best ways to purchase a pass so that you can avoid contact with surfaces that others may have touched. Download the latest version of GoPass in the Apple App Store or Google Play. Purchase Discount Tap cards at 7-Eleven stores or other participating retailers. Visit GoPass.org to learn more.
Masks are still required on all DART vehicles (as of press time). If you forget yours, you’ll find free mask dispensers onboard. DART also provides hand sanitizer on all buses and trains.
It’s understandable that people tend to cluster near the front end of the platforms. But if you make use of the whole platform before boarding your train, you just may have a less crowded riding experience.
If the train is full, consider taking the bus. DART Bus Routes 60, 111, 409, and 595 will drop you off near the main entrance of the fair. To see if a DART Bus fits your itinerary, visit DART.org/schedules or use the Google Transit trip planner at DART.org.

“Hearing Services of Mckinney is my #1 place to go for my hearing loss needs. Caring and dedicated professionals with many years of experience working daily to meet your needs.”
– Terry G. Box, Retired Collin County Sheriff
Hearing is one of the body’s most remarkable senses. It integrates with our brain to help us connect with the world around us. Made up of a complex system of delicate and synchronous parts, it’s easy to take this vital sense for granted. If any of these components aren’t working properly, the result could be hearing loss. For 48 million Americans—or nearly one in five ages 12 and older—this is precisely the case. If you think you or someone you know has hearing loss, you’re probably wondering what the next step should be: that’s easy—see a hearing professional. It’s important to see someone who specializes in hearing issues such as a Doctor of Audiology. Schedule a comprehensive evaluation to begin treatment and rehabilitation as soon as possible.
While hearing loss typically can’t be reversed, most cases can be managed with the help of an Audiologist and hearing aids.
Just as every person is unique, every hearing loss and need is unique too. To ensure you get a solution that’s custom-fit to your precise needs and lifestyle, it’s always recommended that you consult with an audiologist. These trained experts have the experience, education, and technology needed to diagnose and measure your degree of hearing loss, then recommend and administer a solution personalized for you, including ongoing support and care.
Today the best solution for sensorineural hearing loss is hearing aids. Like all high-tech devices, hearing aids have improved significantly over the past several years in terms of performance and appearance. From “invisible” solutions that fit deep inside your ear and are virtually undetectable but still deliver exceptional sound quality, to wireless options that stream audio from your phone and TV, today’s hearing aids sound better, fit more comfortably and perform more reliably than ever before.
A microphone picks up sound and converts it into an electrical/digital signal. An amplifier then increases the strength of the signal, which in our more sophisticated devices, is manipulated by advanced signal processing. This allows the signal to be “shaped” to someone’s hearing loss. The receiver or speaker converts it back into sound and sends it into the ear canal, to eventually reach the inner ear. That signal goes up the auditory pathway to the brain which “hears” and understands the sound as speech. There is a difference between basic amplification products and hearing aids. (PSAPs) both improve the ability to hear sound. PSAPs are typically stripped of sound enhancement features. In many ways, these devices are a throwback to the old analog hearing aids that basically just made all sounds louder. However, hearing aids are designed to improve your hearing in more difficult listening situations with advanced technology features like feedback elimination, noise reduction technology and often better ability to hear on the phone.
Nearly 95% of people with sensorineural hearing loss can be helped with hearing aids. But wearing two hearing aids delivers these additional benefits:
• Better understanding of speech
• Better understanding in background noise
• Better and smoother sound quality
• Better sound identification and localization
• Better tinnitus masking
Research by the National Council on Aging (NCOA) concluded that hearing loss treatment is shown to improve: physical health, communication in relationships, warmth in family relationships, ease in communication, emotional stability, sense of control over life events, and earning power.
Today’s best hearing aids are precision instruments, utilizing advanced technology that can and should be customized to fit your specific hearing loss and unique lifestyle needs. Determining which hearing aids are right for you depends on a variety of important and unique factors including: the nature and severity of your hearing loss, your eyesight and dexterity, the size and shape of your outer ear, the types of activities you enjoy (listening needs assessment) and cosmetic concerns. That’s why getting fit with the advice and consultation of an experienced Audiologist can’t be overemphasized.
The Better Hearing Institute reiterates this in their report “The hearing aid fitting process requires complete in-person hearing assessment in a sound booth; the training and skills of a credentialed hearing professional in order the prescriptively fit the hearing aids using sophisticated computer programs; and appropriate in-person follow-up and counseling. This is not possible when consumers purchase one-size fits-all hearing aids over the internet or elsewhere.”
Dear Olivia,
My husband is coming home from the hospital after a long battle with cancer and we are overwhelmed with the thought of how to care for him at home. I know the VNA will help us by providing hospice care at home, but we just don’t know what to say to him and if we should avoid talking about dying so that he does not give up hope. My grown children and I just don’t know how to help him be at peace or how to make the most of the time left. Can you help?

While families are coping with their grief and that of their family members, it is normal to want to put on a “brave face” for the patient. LAW FOR SENIOR ADULTS & THEIR FAMILIES
Elder Law is first and foremost about empowering seniors. Elder Law services help you address issues of living arrangements, financial well-being, healthcare options, and the ultimate disposition of assets, enabling you to make your own choices and decisions about managing life as you age.
Leu & Peirce has many reasons to support efforts to end Alzheimer’s disease. As Elder Law attorneys, we witness daily the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia on our clients and their families. Alzheimer’s is a progressive, fatal disease that destroys a person’s memory and brain functioning over time. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, accounting for 60%–80% of dementia cases. More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, which kills more people each year than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. Notably, Alzheimer’s and dementia deaths have increased by 16% during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, Alzheimer’s disease will cost the United States $355 billion, with this number projected to increase to $1.1 trillion by 2050.
Thanks to the Alzheimer’s Association, individuals living with Alzheimer’s, their caregivers, and loved ones are not fighting this disease alone. Formed in 1980, the Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. Through fundraising, the Alzheimer’s Association provides care and support for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias on a national and local level, funds critical research for treatment and prevention, and serves as the leading voice for Alzheimer’s disease advocacy. None of that would be possible without large-scale fundraising and community support. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s has evolved into the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, research, and support. Held in over 600 communities, this one-day event calls upon walkers of all ages to come out and support those touched by Alzheimer’s.
Leu & Peirce works closely with the Alzheimer’s Association’s Dallas and Northeast Texas Chapter and encourages the community to join us at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on October 23rd at Grandscape in The Colony (outside Nebraska Furniture Mart). In fact, the whole Leu & Peirce team and their families, the “Wonder Walkers,” will be there showing their support for the more than 400,000 people in Texas living with Alzheimer’s. There will also be a Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Dallas, at Dallas City Hall Plaza, on November 6th. Participation in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is simple. Sign up individually or as a team at www.alz.org/greaterdallas. The Alzheimer’s Association will continue to closely monitor the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to ensure all Walk events adhere to public health guidelines and are safe for attendees.
Leu & Peirce believes wholeheartedly in the mission to end Alzheimer’s through research, care, and support for those affected by the disease. As Elder Law attorneys, we strive to alleviate the anxiety of our clients by providing a comprehensive roadmap to planning for a future with dementia. After a diagnosis of dementia, you may ask: “Who will take care of me when I need help? How will I pay for the care I need? Who can I trust to protect me?” Attorneys who devote their practice to Elder Law can help you understand your options and guide you through these important decisions. With special sensitivity to the legal issues surrounding the healthcare of older adults, Elder Law attorneys empower seniors through the long-term care planning process by ensuring proper estate planning documents are in place and assisting with planning for the cost of long-term care.
It is estimated that every 65 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s disease. Although Elder Law attorneys strive to protect the future of those who suffer from Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia, these legal safety nets are only temporary solutions until a cure can be found. It takes action and resources to make a difference and everyone can help lead the way. Educate your family, friends, and colleagues that all of us are at risk of being touched by Alzheimer’s and encourage them to join the fight to find a cure. Deaths from Alzheimer’s have increased 145 percent since the year 2000, and Alzheimer’s is the only leading cause of death that cannot be prevented, cured, or even slowed. A permanent solution can only come from a cure, and a cure can only come with your help. Bring your family and friends with you to support the Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Grandscape on October 23rd or in Dallas on November 6th and join a community of others walking together to end Alzheimer’s. Lori Leu, Erin Peirce, Lauren Olson, and Brandi Binkley are Elder Law attorneys with Leu & Peirce, PLLC located in Plano, Texas. They can be reached at 972-996-2540.
Jennifer Lopez is many things, an actress, singer, dancer, style icon, mom, entrepreneur, and dreamer. The multi-hyphenate star has lived several lifetimes in her 52 years, yet you wouldn’t know it from looking at her flawless visage and taut frame.
She’s been working nonstop for decades and has eight albums, 33 films, 10 television shows, 26 producer credits, multiple fragrances, and a skincare line to show for her strong work ethic and tireless drive to be the best at whatever she sets her sights on doing.
The talented performer credits her success to working harder than everybody else. “There’s a lot of people with talent, but I don’t think there’s a lot of people who are willing to put in the work…I didn’t have much of an education. I didn’t go to college. I never dreamt of Harvard or any of these big schools. That wasn’t my route,” Lopez told Red Magazine
Following her own path has never been a problem for Lopez, who was raised in Castle Hill, in the South Central part of the Bronx. According to multiple sources, she shared a bed with her two sisters in the house she grew up in and commuted downtown to Manhattan to take dance lessons. The NYC borough will always hold a special place in her heart. She told W Magazine, “All the strength that I needed for life, I got from that neighborhood.”
All the strength that I needed for life, I got from that neighborhood.
Lopez’s first brush with Hollywood came when she worked as a backup dancer for New Kids on the Block in 1991. From there she landed on the show In Living Color as a Fly Girl. She moved from New York City to Los Angeles in 1993 to become a regular cast member on the show. Minor appearances in Mi Familia, Money Train, and Jack followed, but it was her portrayal of the late Latin recording artist Selena Quintanilla that served as Lopez’s breakout movie.
To prepare for the role, Lopez painstakingly researched Selena’s backstory and even slept in her bed to better capture the tragically short life of the Queen of Tejano Music. The hard work paid off and earned Lopez a 1998 Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a musical or comedy.
Lopez followed it up with starring roles in Anaconda and Out of Sight and became the first Latin actress to make over $1 million for a film. She went on to release her debut studio album On the 6, followed up by the simultaneous 2001 release of her second album J.Lo and the romantic comedy
The Wedding Planner, which garnered her the distinction of being the first woman to have a number one film and album in the same week.
“I always wanted to be great at what I did—that’s what drove me. My race has never been with anyone else, it’s been with myself,” she told Vanity Fair’s Julie Miller in 2018. “If I got rejected, I wouldn’t take it personally. I was like, make them a fan and they’ll bring you back in for something else. I never thought about money or fame, and I never really thought that would happen to me. All that was just a by-product.”
When asked by Vanity Fair writer Britt Hennemuth what a 10-year-old Jennifer might be surprised to know she’d ultimately achieved, Lopez said: “So many things. Wow. When I did my first movie, when I booked my first dance job and went to Europe and nobody in my family had ever been to Europe. The first time I heard my record on the radio. The first time I was in the studio recording a record. The first time I saw myself on screen and I was sitting in the movie theater, and I saw Mi Familia and I started crying.”
“Sometimes I didn’t believe my life. I don’t believe what happens to me and the things that I’m able to experience and
I definitely feel like I've grown up.
the opportunities that I’ve gotten. It’s every single moment, even till this moment, surprises me and touches my heart in a way that I could never really even begin to explain.”
Interspersed throughout her prolific career have been a string of romances that have come and gone and come around again. The most notable coupling was with actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck from mid-2002 to early 2004. Tabloids dubbed the duo Bennifer, when the pair starred together in the much ridiculed Gigli. After breaking off their engagement, Lopez married singer Marc Anthony in 2004 and gave birth to fraternal twins, Maximillian David and Emma Maribel in 2008. The couple divorced in 2011.
Lopez explained how being a mom changed her to Miller. “I can’t help but be a different person now that I’ve had kids. That really does change your whole perspective on life for the better. I definitely feel like I’ve grown up.”
After splitting from Anthony, Lopez retained primary physical custody of Emme and Max and went on to date former backup dancer Casper Smart before dating baseball player Alex Rodriguez. Engaged in 2019, the pair announced the end of their relationship in April of this year. Since then, Lopez has been seen with her former paramour, Affleck.
In an interview with Ebro Darden for Apple Music 1, Lopez subtly addressed the breakup with ex-fiancé Rodriguez. “Once you get to the point where you’re like, ‘This is not right for me, or this doesn’t feel good, or I need to make an adjustment here. This is not really about anybody else but me.’ Once you do that, stuff starts falling into place.”
And, things have certainly been falling into place for Lopez over the last couple of years. In addition to her turn in Hustlers, which garnered Lopez a lot of Oscar buzz in 2019, she has multiple movies in production including Marry Me with Owen Wilson and Shotgun Wedding with Josh Duhamel. And, of course, there’s her relationship with Affleck, who even before they got back together came down on the Academy for overlooking Lopez for an Oscar for Hustlers
“She should have been nominated. She’s the real thing… How awesome is it that she had her biggest hit movie at 50?” said Affleck.
As for being a sex symbol in her 50s, Lopez considers aging all about attitude. “I find myself thinking about being youthful and timeless at every age. At some point aging is going to happen, but until then, you decide how strong you’re going to be. How much you’re going to move. How much you’re going to work. How active you’re are going to be in your mind, with your life, with your body,” she said to Darden. “You decide. And you can keep it strong. You can keep it good.”

Start the school year off right with a bright and fresh smile! What better way to get your kiddo ready for the new school year than to ensure they have a health and happy smile? Whether it’s with soccer practice, ballet, or a football game, the school year schedule can fill up quickly, so schedule your dentist appointments before your schedule is booked with extracurricular activities.
ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO EXERCISE GOOD DENTAL HABITS
You can contribute to your kid’s oral healthy by inspiring them to be the best at taking care of their teeth! Make it fun by finding a song that they can brush their teeth to!
SWITCH OUT THEIR TOOTHBRUSH
It is important to use a toothbrush that is able to effectively remove plaque when you are brushing your teeth.
PROTECT FROM INJURIES
If your child plays sports, a mouthguard is something to consider to protect their smile. Sports mouthguards can prevent chipped or broken teeth, as well as nerve damage to a tooth.
NIGHTGUARDS
Night-time teeth grinding or clenching is one of the most common dental conditions. Most people don’t even realize that they do it! Although it may not seem like a concern, grinding your teeth can lead to a chipped tooth, as well as wear down your teeth over time. If you notice that your child has a stiff jaw, headaches, or facial pain after sleeping, then a nightguard might be a great option for eliminating pain while protecting their smile.
How familiar does this scenario sound? Into your investment accounts, you pick a couple of the best performing mutual funds you can find and spread around your contributions into each. Then, at the start of the next year, you again look for the best funds and make another contribution. Year after year, repeat, repeat. Perhaps your employer changed 401k providers at some point, and you had to choose from a whole new set of funds? At the end of a couple decades, you might end up owning 10-20 mutual funds in the aggregate of all your accounts.
Certainly, there is nothing wrong with owning mutual funds. They are great investment vehicles when you have smaller sums of money and are in the accumulation phase of your investment life, but if you own too many, you might have gaps or redundancies in your investment portfolio. There might be a better way to have larger sums of money managed. Allow me to explain.
In the above example, you were probably given a narrow list of funds from which to choose, and so you did a little homework, and selected. For most folks, this is merely an exercise in picking the best performers (from past data, mind you), and crossing your fingers. If we dig a little deeper, we might find that the average mutual fund (depending on size) might contain 100 stocks. Multiply that by 10-20 and you’re the proud owner of fractional bits of 1,000-2,000 stocks! On top of the sheer volume of stocks you own, many funds own the same stocks. In some instances, you could theoretically own the stock of XYZ 10, maybe even 15 times.
How about transparency, fees, and taxes? The only way to see which stocks your mutual funds own is to go to the fund’s website and look for yourself. You will never be able to pick up the phone and talk with the fund manager about his/her thoughts on the market, certain industries, or stocks. On the fee front, mutual funds have various annual fees to fund their operating expenses. These can be anywhere between .25%-
1.5% depending on the size of the fund, the types of stocks they purchase, or investment style they follow. The fees come out of your investment dollars. If you then have an advisor handling your affairs this way, you must account for that fee as well. These fees vary depending on the scope of what your advisor provides, but for most accounts around $1 million, it’s safe to budget about 1%. Finally, you have no control of your capital gains situation; your money is comingled with everyone else. If you are invested this way, you most likely have redundancies in holdings that are entirely unnecessary, you have no day-to-day look into what the funds own, tax gains/losses are uncontrollable, and you’ve paid twice (once to the funds and once to your advisor). If you spread yourself too thin, you might compromise your results. If this sounds like your current portfolio, we believe there is a more efficient way to provide ample diversification, true transparency, and tax efficiency. We would enjoy talking with you.
Wide diversification is only required when investors do not understand what they’re doing.-WARREN BUFFETT

Planning has many benefits. Planning a vacation or a joyous occasion such as a wedding or baby shower often result in months of discussion and attention to details. Much effort goes in to making certain that everything goes smoothly, and no stone is left unturned. If you are fortunate enough to not worry about expenses, the planning is even more fun. The result is gratifying, and the stories told recounting the amazing event will go on for years. Naturally, an event that will not be pleasant to attend or even think about for that matter is not something that anyone wants to discuss or certainly plan for. However, while we plan for retirement, college, weddings, and vacations, many people fail to plan for the one thing we all, without exception, have in front of us. Over the course of my career, I have met with many families who have lost a loved one. Not a single family whose loved one planned has expressed regret or displeasure. On the other hand, I talk with families who are completely caught off guard and have no idea what the person who has died would have wanted for their final arrangements.
Your opinion does matter because it may be the only time your family will hear you say what you prefer when it comes to your funeral, burial, or cremation. Sitting down with a pre-planning professional at your funeral home of choice will bring you peace of mind and allow you to guide the process as you want to, not leave all the important details to your family to struggle through after you are gone. Pre-planning also assures that the cost is what you are comfortable with and when pre-planning, you will have payment options that are typically not available after someone has died. Most plans today are fully transferable should you relocate and by prepaying, you lock in the cost at today’s price, thus protecting your family from inflation.
Talk about this subject with your family while you can express your feelings and desires. The peace of mind you will have once the discussion is over and you have a plan in place will be remarkable. Furthermore, your opinion will be heard because it does matter!

While beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, the key to beauty and a youthful appearance may be in the hands of a skilled cosmetic surgeon who specializes in treating the eyes and areas around the eyes.
Are fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, droopy eyelids, bags under the eyes or sagging brows getting you down? Then schedule a visit with Key-Whitman Eye Center’s oculoplastic surgeon, Leslie Pfeiffer, MD.
Why choose an oculoplastic surgeon to help you look younger?
When we look at someone’s face, our gaze gravitates toward the eyes first. When signs of aging appear on the face, people notice. One of the first places the signs of aging show up is around the eyes. This can involve the eyelids, forehead, cheeks, eye socket, or all of these.
According to Dr. Pfeiffer, “The eyelids are a delicate area, and the eyelid skin is the thinnest skin of the body. When looking for improvement around the eyes, you need a surgeon who specializes ex-
Wrinkles. The solution? Neurotoxins like Botox. If wrinkles on your forehead, crow’s feet around the eyes or deep vertical lines between your brows are aging you beyond your years, you’re not alone. “Injecting Botox in those areas creates a smooth appearance and also gives a refreshing look around the eyes,” Dr. Pfeiffer says.
Sun-damaged skin and fine lines. The solution? Laser resurfacing.
According to Dr. Pfeiffer, “Here in Texas a lot of people experience sun damage. Unfortunately, sun damage can really age the skin. Depending on the patient, we may treat sun damage on the face with CO2 laser resurfacing or the Intense Pulsed Light laser.”
Want to explore your options for rejuvenating your look?
Dr. Pfeiffer is here to listen.
If you live in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and would like to learn more about anti-aging treatments and procedures, Dr. Pfeiffer invites you to have a conversation at one of her 4 locations: Dallas, Frisco, Rockwall, or Arlington.
According to Dr. Pfeiffer, “When patients walk through my door,
clusively in this area. Oculoplastic surgeons not only take into account the health of the eye as a top priority but also have intimate knowledge of the detailed anatomy here.”
Dr. Pfeiffer is a trained eye surgeon (ophthalmologist) who did additional training, studying the areas around the eyes. This included a full two years of surgical training at the largest oculoplastics-only private practice in Los Angeles, Eyesthetica, and the University of Southern California Roski Eye Institute.
Four ways to get a fresh, youthful look with cosmetic procedures:
Dr. Pfeiffer, who joined Key-Whitman in 2019, and is pleased to offer patients a variety of anti-aging treatments—from minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures like Botox and laser resurfacing to surgical procedures, including eyelid lifts, under-eye bag correction, and brow lifts. Ready for a younger-looking you? Dr. Pfeiffer breaks down the top facial aging culprits and how to address them below.
Saggy lower eyelids. The solution? Surgery.
“Many of my patients don’t like the way their lower eyelid bags cause them to look tired and older than they feel. I can really improve their appearance by removing or repositioning the fat under their eyes. In addition, I can use CO2 laser resurfacing to smooth the lines and wrinkles below the eyes.”
Droopy upper eyelids and brows. The solution? Surgery.
“Many patients feel young but think that the appearance of their eyes makes them look older than they feel. Often droopy eyelids are the culprit. This can be improved with surgery. These are by far the most common surgical procedures I perform. Surgery takes place at our state-of-the-art surgery center at Key-Whitman’s Dallas headquarters, where my main office is located,” says Dr. Pfeiffer.
I’m interested in hearing their story first. I want to understand their concerns. From there, I create a customized treatment plan for them, and then we work together to come up with a solution that addresses their needs.”
If you’d like to schedule a consultation with Dr. Pfeiffer, contact us. Simply call our office at 214-220-3937 or request an appointment at keywhitman.com.
