the one and only word that needed to be there was THE G-word, as spirituality or consciousness were not covered in the other two lists. Because the G sits in between the two lists of more mundane topics, it is quite significant as the fulcrum for the whole magazine.

Yes, Spirit is the reason I do this magazine – because I absolutely know that if we had more Spirit in our lives we’d have less s#*t. Speaking of that, there’s an article in this issue in which Catreeana reassures us that we can stop the stuff from happening by learning to create what happens in our life, and we do this by becoming more conscious of ourselves, and we do this by… hmmm… this is getting circular – we do this by reading and attending to the teachings and practices we come across.

Let’s change the subject – money – most people need it. Rik Schnabel gives us some hints about how we might increase our earning capacity: “… when you grow or improve your value, you grow your attraction and therefore your wealth.

Imagine an iPhone without apps ... and you get a sense of what I’m talking about here.”

O-oh, he’s on about the same stuff. Read on a bit further and you’ll find that he’s saying that you are the real source of money and that it is you that has to increase your personal value.

If you’re a regular reader, you may wonder why we’ve suddenly incorporated new topics in this issue, and they will be repeated and added to in future issues too.

I was first introduced to fashion as an art form by my then assistant Melisa Gray-Ward about a decade ago. Indeed, I am pleased and proud to welcome her now as our new Fashion Editor.

Because I have a plump body I had always been scared of fashion (just like I used to be scared of the G-word too) but Melisa opened my eyes to its sheer artiness.

Then in January this year Amaresh Wardha introduced me to his amazing fashion photography and he suggested I consider fashion for LivingNow. I sat with it one night in a meditative state and suddenly saw how we could cover fashion in a LivingNow way, with a difference. Having reached that conclusion I went to bed, dog tired, but the moment my head hit the pillow the word ‘fashion’ jumped into it, followed in quick succession by the other F-words on the list you see above. The next thing all the H-words jumped into my head too. Slightly annoyed, because I wanted to sleep, I realised that I had a heap of words from two proximate letters in the alphabet, and mouthed that all I needed now was a G-word, and of course I quickly saw that

T I M E – D O YOU have enough? Do you have enough money – or energy, health or love in fact? If not, or if you have too much s#*t or drama in your life, you’ve picked up the right magazine. There are answers here aplenty – answers for a quick fix or longer term – from both the advertisers and the articles. I’ll leave you to explore the cornucopia of solutions the advertisers have to offer. I’ll tell you about the articles and the way many of them just fit hand and glove inside each other. I could claim to be a clever editor who just planned all these coinciding articles, but I didn’t – not in my forebrain at least. I follow hunches and my intuition, and the Universe provides the building blocks – most often as emails in my in box.

If this is the first time you’ve read this magazine, note that I’ve used the word Universe here as a ubiquitous word for the big G-word – yep, God. Don’t drop the page in fright now. I know that a lot of people have been put off by that word because of their experiences within the family or organised religion. You can let yourself get over that, you know. In fact, you can let yourself get over anything and everything by changing your mind, your state of being and your self-talk. Again, the articles and the advertisers in these very pages can help with that. A.C. Ping’s amusing and insightful article on drama syndrome really underlines the damage that negative self-talk

STYLE AND SUSTAINABILITY: the changing face of fashion

by Melisa Gray-Ward (pictured above) ONG OI NG DE C I SIONS A B OU T what, where and when to eat each day are mitigated by our need to survive. Climate and cultural codes aside, our need for clothing may not be life threatening, but wondering what to wear each day is equally unavoidable. Like food, the fashion we consume is usually dictated by our finances, and ultimately influenced by our emotions and ego. What we choose to wear is based upon a calculated image of how we want the world to perceive us.

Despite the obvious ways in which our clothes communicate certain messages about us as individuals, those who loathe fashion often dismiss interest in style as fickle and frivolous, which could be a fair argument, when you consider the rag trade’s reprehensible rap sheet. The industry’s negative impact on the environment, human rights abuses and marketing ploys designed to diminish self-esteem are all reasons why fashion has largely been absent from LivingNow in the past.

The arrival of fast fashion chains such as Zara and Topshop on Australian shores last year brought a new struggle to independent Australian designers. It’s unlikely the accusations of child labour practices against Zara or the size of Australia’s landfill were on the shoppers’ minds as they queued around the block in anticipation of cute blazers and cheap blouses, but, despite the abundance of fast fashion available, a growing number of contemporary designers and brands are paving the catwalks with good intentions.

Increasingly we see the fashion spotlight shine on exciting new methods of fashion production and design. No longer confined to the clichéd images of burlap sacks and homespun fibres, authentic fashion is about innovation, a tenement of good design. Exciting new forms of fashions come in many different packages: sustainable, green, eco, fair-trade, up-cycled, recycled, second-hand, vintage organic, natural, eco-conscious, locally sourced, artisan-made, hand-made and custom design are all forms of fashion we will explore in the future editions of LivingNow. Our interview with Australian eco fashion designer Rachael Cassar in this issue is a perfect example of the designers and brands we wish to celebrate.

Showcasing work that sits outside the standard confines of the industry is important, and in turn supports those companies in making their voice heard. THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH is it a myth?

by Tracey Hogan I S T H E R E A B O TA N IC A L that can offer protective effects against the ravages of modern-day living, while protecting our treasured memory processes and cognitive function?

The Ginkgo biloba tree is the story of longevity, of survival, and regeneration. This plant’s origins are China and Japan, where it is used in traditional medicine. It’s referred to as the ‘living fossil’ of the plant world, because it’s the only surviving member of the Ginkgoales family of plants. It has an interesting shaped leaf too, with two ‘lobes’ (hence biloba).

It became the symbol for renewal after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Out of the carnage, sadness and debris, a ginkgo sprouted new buds from the ground. The trunk was gone but its resilience wasn’t. It has the ability to live on, and it’s the ability of this plant to survive that increases the appeal of this herb for botanical medicine research.

To date there are plenty of studies that have been conducted on Ginkgo. In-vitro studies have shown antioxidant activity against free radicals like superoxide anion and hyroxyl radical.

Part of the activity of ginkgo comes from its ginkgolides, which have been found to be platelet activating factor antagonists, meaning it has blood-thinning capabilities. The hypothesis has been made that platelet activating factor formation might be involved in the beginning stages of nerve cell degeneration in brain cells in separate animal brain cell studies, but this is not conclusive.

Ginkgo has been shown to improve memory processes, in particular working memory processes, memory consolidation, executive functioning, and working memory speed. These findings were from a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 61 healthy volunteers aged 18-40 years. Taking ginkgo orally has been reported to improve the cognitive function of some elderly people with mild to moderate age-related cognitive or memory impairment.

Ginkgo biloba has been recommended to be effective for cerebral insufficiency confirmed by a metaanalysis. Cerebral insufficiency is not a precise syndrome per se. It’s regarded as a number of cerebral disturbances like confusion, lack of recent memory, lack of initiative and changes in social behaviour.

These symptoms have been associated with impaired cerebral circulation, and have been considered sometimes to be early signs of dementia.

Ginkgo warrants further study, and its clinically proven full capabilities as a therapeutic botanical are just at the budding stage. With its promising actions to improve cognitive function, memory and concentration, ginkgo is a herb to watch.

There’s the possibility of an interaction with blood thinning medications like Warfarin because of its platelet activating factor antagonising activity. If you are on these types of medication, speak to your qualified health care professional prior to taking any supplement to avoid the possibility of any interaction.

These spiritual laws are real, and science has been proving it for years. Quantum physics is at the cutting edge of this work. Most people are aware of ‘the eye of the observer’. This is where the experiment outcome changes if it is being watched.

It is now proven by science that everything vibrates, and that vibration has a sound which is not always audible to the human ear. NASA has recorded the sound of the sun. Even we, as humans, vibrate, and our vibration changes all the time with our mood. Although others do not hear our vibration, they feel it. We can often feel if someone is happy or sad. How many times have you been driving and turn just at the time someone is looking at you? We actually feel the person looking at us though the vibration of it.

For thousands of years religion has been trying to explain the spiritual laws. Reap what you sow, the law of karma, etc. In a nutshell, your vibration goes out into the world and affects the vibration of everything else, pushing and pulling things to and from us.

So let’s imagine that we are actually created in the image of God. If that is true then we are truly creators ourselves. When you begin to understand how, through the vibration, we do create, then it is not far from the truth. We can learn to live as our god-self by becoming ever more conscious of ourselves.

Awareness and being conscious of ourselves is a lifetime journey. This takes dedication and persistence, but awaking to the self and how you affect your life is a wondrous thing. There are many extraordinary teachings and practices to help us find our way. Look for one that best suits you. You can learn to create what happens in your life and not just have stuff happen.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN healing and curing Words and picture by Sol Luckman W E L I V E I N a global culture with such a skewed view of what healing actually is that this point needs to be highlighted. Although healing often includes alleviating or eliminating symptoms, healing (‘wholing’) must not be confused with simple curing. Whereas curing is designed to make the problem go away, no questions asked and no insights gained, healing is a very different activity. True healing embraces the problem (which is actually a teaching tool employed by our Higher Self) as a way of integrating and being transformed by it. Curing focuses on symptoms without realising they are spiritual messages. By contrast, healing is a body-mind-spirit phenomenon involving an increase in awareness that takes the form of a transformational step on our evolutionary journey of conscious personal mastery. At its heart, healing teaches us to love ourselves and others unconditionally and, moreover, to see others as ourselves.

This line of reasoning establishes that: 1. healing is inseparable from loving; and 2. loving leads to a higher state of awareness that has been called unity consciousness.

In this ultimately individualised process, very often the problem disappears, but not because we have ignored it or forced it to go away. Rather, the problem is simply no longer of use to us because our dysfunctional relationship – which is always a variety of victim consciousness – to the underlying factors creating the problem has been healed consciously.

While we can facilitate healing in another, often with astonishing results, in the end we cannot make a person benefit from the transformational energies we offer. If any part (conscious or otherwise) of the recipient’s body-mind-spirit refuses to accept the healing energies, to that extent, the person will not experience healing or transformation.

The view that all healing is really self-healing is strongly supported by Glen Rein’s inspiring research in DNA’s response to coherent emotions. Dr. Rein found that positive emotions compress DNA – making DNA more robust and arguably more available for healing and transformation. On the other hand, negative emotions decompress (to the point even of killing) DNA. It is up to us as individuals to determine – and if necessary, upgrade – which emotions we regularly experience as well as which emotionally charged-attitudes we typically entertain so that our healing can occur.

Even a minimal willingness to undergo positive change can set the stage for remarkable benefits from many methods of healing.

To understand that healing is always self-healing is to grasp the primary role of freewill in this process.

Nothing about healing is predetermined. To the contrary, healing is a quantum unfoldment that at each instant respects our own myriad boundaries as to how fast – and how radically – we are willing to transform.

Such boundaries can be conscious. They also can be subconscious, ancestral, and even karmic.

Theoretically, we can heal and change overnight – and some people do. But more often, healing is an incremental, cumulative and eventually exponential process that allows us to consciously integrate its numerous transformational lessons at a manageable rate.

WILL YOU BE A MONEY TAP OR A DRAIN IN 2012?

by Rik Schnabel W H E N I T COM E S to money, have you ever noticed how some people tend to be like taps and others like drains? While the taps create money like it’s an unlimited resource, the drains never seem to have enough of it.

I’m very familiar with the drain mindset because I used to be one until my very first wealth mentor taught me about the ‘money paradox’ and the two most powerful energetic laws that surround it. I would love to share these with you as this will make a dramatic difference to your 2012 and beyond.

While the drains believe that the more you take the more you have, the money paradox is contrary and the money taps know that the more value you give, the more you make. This might not make much sense at first. Let me explain some of the powerful energetic laws that underpin this profound insight and will improve your relationship with money in 2012.

The first energetic law that you need to understand is ‘The Energy of Value’.

Simply stated, when you grow or improve your value, you grow your attraction and therefore your wealth. Imagine an iPhone without apps or a house without a view and you get a sense of what I’m talking about here. The higher the value, the higher the energy, and that translates to more money.

Now you might say that it’s not about the money, and you’re right – it’s not. It’s all about the energy exchange; the money is simply a by-product and the great creators of value know this.

The greater the value you create for others, the more magnetic you become to money. What I see, however, is that the drains get this completely wrong.

Instead of improving their offering and growing their value, I see too many simply discounting what they give and in a sense not valuing it. It almost seems like there is something wrong with the offering. Here both the buyer and the seller undervalue the offering.

Instead of discounting, why not valueadd? To completely understand ‘The Energy of Value’, imagine that in 2012 you grow the value of what you offer to such a degree that it cannot be eclipsed or matched.

Another way to look at this could be to offer something so unique that it cannot help but stand out.

Another insight worth noting is that drains do not realise that anything you do that decreases the energy of your products, your team or even your energy, reduces your value.

Think of complaints, whingeing, arguments, carpet bagging or limiting

your love or care as dramatically reducing your value. We all know someone that has a draining effect on us.

If you said that our attraction to money could well be found in our energy, you may have found the greatest source of wealth – you!

The true source of money and wealth is not the economy, the banks, your employer or even your customers or clients.

The real source of money and wealth is you! So growing your personal value by investing in yourself could be one of the best financial decisions you’ll ever make. I would even go as far as saying that, if you have any negative associations to money, do something about it, because I can assure you that if you don’t, you are likely repelling money from your life. If you’ve learned Neuro Linguistic Programming you realise that we humans place meaning upon everything – and I mean everything. It is the very meaning that we place upon money that determines if we have lots of it or little.

Think back to the last time you pulled up next to a Lamborghini or Ferrari and recall what you might have called the driver, in your head of course. Whatever you thought of the driver will either attract or repel money to you, as associations run deep and we never wish to become who we slur.

W E A LT H = (VA LU E X LE V E R AGE ) Now that you’ve increased your value, it’s time to leverage it. The formula for great wealth is value times leverage. After all, there is no point in having all this value to offer others if nobody knows about it. This leads us to the second energetic law which is ‘The Energy of Attraction’. One way to look at this energy is the difference between creating an attractive garden that attracts butterflies as opposed to going out and catching them with a net. The latter requires far more energy on an ongoing basis and usually produces a lesser result. A beautiful garden has a high energy of attraction and draws to it butterflies and busy bees easily, while an unattractive garden is so often passed or ignored. Leverage is the art of less effort for a greater result, and attractive gardens with lots of value are a perfect foundation for leverage. A well designed and systemised garden will attract wealth through leverage; other people’s time, efforts and money. If you truly want to create wealth and shift from the drain mindset, do something dramatic to change your thinking and tap into wealth.

BPA IS A DIRTY WORD

BPA (BI SP H E NOL A) is a dirty word for anybody in the know. Essentially it is a hormone disrupting chemical found in polycarbonate plastics (used in some baby bottles, office and drinking water bottles), paper products (receipts, toilet paper, newspapers, tickets, magazines, business cards), CDs and in the lining of many of our food tins. BPA is just one of a growing number of hormone disrupting chemicals that has permeated our everyday life.

Of concern is that, unlike any other toxins that we’ve previously been exposed to, these chemicals exert their effect at levels far below what is considered to be harmful.

Research shows that it is the timing and duration of exposure and not the dose that determines what impact these chemicals have on the body, which makes children most vulnerable to them. Like any hormone, the body is programmed to react to minute levels – levels that are typically found in everyday products. So the lower the levels, the greater the response. In contrast, at high levels, the hormone receptors in our body shut down altogether through a process known as receptor downregulation. Animal studies have demonstrated that exposing a male rat foetus to BPA can significantly alter its production of testosterone.

The authorities’ way of regulating hormone disrupting chemicals, by providing acceptable limits in everyday products, is

futile as these chemicals can cause serious adverse health effects at levels well below what is currently accepted.

BPA has been banned in children’s products in Canada, France, Denmark, and the European Union because of its association with breast and prostate cancer, infertility, early puberty in girls, type-2 diabetes, obesity and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

There are inherent problems with the way in which science evaluates hormone disrupting chemicals like BPA. Our regulatory authorities wait until there is concrete scientific evidence that an agent can cause harm, essentially waiting for the disease to occur in the population before they react. This underlying presumption of ‘innocent until proven guilty’ enables hazards to remain on the market where they may harm our (children’s) health. Asbestos and lead dust are two such examples.

Just because there is insufficient scientific evidence to prove that an agent is harmful, doesn’t mean it is safe. Historically the problem may lie with technology.

Setting a ‘safe’ level of chemicals in consumer products is meaningless as it does not account for the total exposure to thousands of chemicals in multiple products, let alone those in our food, air and water.

These limits do not consider the impact of chemical synergy. For example if sodium

lauryl sulphate – the foaming agent in your shampoo – combines with an amine (such as triethanolamine), it may result in the formation of nitrosamines which are carcinogenic. Disturbingly, you will find this combination in the majority of your personal care products.

It fails to account for the fact that breastfed babies are at the end of the food chain.

Numerous chemicals such as the pesticide DDT and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been found in higher levels in a child’s blood in proportion to their body weight, than most adults.

There is a misguided assumption that all products on our shelves have been rigorously tested for safety. While this may be so for the great majority of Australian made products, the importation of hazardous products is an unfortunate yet common occurrence. Part of the problem lies with the inconsistencies in Occupational Health and Safety laws, or lack of, amongst countries. Another issue is the lack of resources to check the hundreds of thousands of shipping containers that reach our shores. Consequently product recall is an ongoing phenomenon.

Children are not adults, and yet these limits are based on adult exposure. Infants and children are inherently different from adults because they breathe more air, drink more water and eat more food

relative to their body weight. They also have a higher metabolic and absorption rate, compromised immune system as well as a decreased capacity to detoxify and excrete chemicals. In addition, children are exposed to significantly higher levels of airborne pollutants when compared with adults because they put objects in their mouths and their breathing zone is closer to the floor. Children are uniquely susceptible to environmental pollutants and yet, despite this awareness, there is currently little or no legislation to protect children from these hazards.

What we require is a radical shift in the way we assess new technologies coming onto the market and this can be achieved with the ‘precautionary principle’. It works on the premise that, if an agent cannot be proven to be completely safe, care or avoidance should be implemented. This is the underlying philosophy of building biology. Global warming is a prime example of the precautionary principle because the stakes of not acting – the extinction of the human race and every other species – are too high. Based on the precautionary principle, it is up to the companies who wish to bring new technologies and products onto the market to prove their safety before they are released on the market.

UP-CYCLING THREADS and turning heads on the catwalk Melisa Gray-Ward interviews Rachael Cassar

I NSP I R E D BY ‘A N Y T H I NG and everything’, Australian eco fashion designer Rachael Cassar creates textural garments using second-hand materials, designed with a customer who has ‘a creative spirit and values the different’ in mind.

Since launching her namesake label back in 2007, a mere four months after graduating from the University of Technology Sydney, Rachel has gone on to international acclaim, exhibiting in London and receiving industry international awards.

LivingNow spoke with Rachel to find out how her designs are received in Australia and what challenges she faces as an eco fashion designer.

You knew from an early age you wanted to be a fashion designer. Education aside, what steps did you take in order to make your dreams a reality?

I just made sure I never stopped creating. This meant hours in my room, conducting my own projects, never getting discouraged if they didn’t work out – this set the strong foundations for me. I am not afraid to make mistakes. I am not afraid to jump right into cutting and stitching and forming even if it means I have to unpick the whole piece and start all over again – I am a true believer of doing rather than planning. That process works for me and helped me realise how great it is to make mistakes, because from mistakes comes problem solving which, for me, forces better and more creative solutions! So I suppose, education aside, it was about learning how I naturally design without being taught the ‘right’ way to create.

How do you strike a balance between creativity and commercialism?

To be honest I never really put that boundary on myself. I suppose the way it works for me is just making sure the piece

is still functional as an item of clothing, but I wouldn’t say I think about being commercial.

How do you define sustainable fashion?

Fashion that is designed with consideration to the environment, consideration of the item’s life span, it’s footprint and that looks towards protecting the future.

Your garments are made from recycled materials. Where do you generally source these materials, and what are the challenges and successes faced when working with recycled materials?

I source my materials from anywhere – markets, garage sales, op shops, auctions, donations from friends, family and public.

Sometimes finding large volumes of one fabric can be difficult, especially if I take something apart, start designing with it and realise the meterage falls short of my vision.

The only other challenge I face with using re-claimed fabric is that it is sometimes really hard to identify the fabric contents.

Are consumers surprised to learn that that your collections are eco-friendly, especially given the tired connotations that eco-fashion has received in the past (an attitude that is slowly changing)?

What’s involved in promoting yourself as a ‘sustainable’ designer? Do you actively make that distinction in your marketing?

Yes I believe the image of eco is changing; however it’s only through designers who are trying to show people that aesthetics should not be compromised or sacrificed for sustainability. I don’t think eco fashion will thrive unless it surprises society instead of offering what traditionally has been thought as eco.

Yes, people get surprised. I don’t think they are attracted to my work solely for the ‘eco’ element. I believe my design aesthetic

holds its own ground. The fact that it is sustainable is a bonus. The two combined ensure a desirable product.

I try not to make a huge distinction in my marketing. I am proud that my work is sustainable and that I have managed to make a strong consistent aesthetic using recycled materials. So I do call myself an Australian eco fashion designer, as I do want people to know there is a consciousness behind my work that needs to be recognised and hopefully helps change society’s preconception of ‘sustainable’. However I still am a fashion designer; I promote my designs first and foremost.

Do you think the Australian perception of sustainable fashion is shifting? Are there any notable advantages or disadvantages of being a designer in Australia?

Yes it is changing, but, when going to another city like London or New York, you realise how slow and behind Australia actually is in terms of embracing sustainable fashion.

I do find it hard here in Australia for the type of fashion I create. I am all about slow fashion. Each item is hand made, valuing technique and quality over quantity. I want my garments to tell a story, to hopefully be a piece that gets passed on. Therefore my fashion isn’t very accessible or, thank God, disposable. Unfortunately this makes it difficult for a small label like mine to thrive here as it goes against everything our traditional fashion industry is about. To be honest, most of the attention I receive is from overseas. The fashion industry here seems to get to a point where it is comfortable with a handful of designers, and those designers seem to dominate the marketplace for decades.

Would you consider your work couture – each garment being an individual piece

based on a client’s individual wishes and measurement – or is it actually ready-towear?

I wouldn’t call my work couture. It has elements of couture techniques – I like to say semi-couture creations. I think I just have always been obsessed with one-ofa-kind pieces – with anything – jewellery, furniture, art – anything where the buyer owns the design and knows it is the only one that exists in the world is so refreshing in a society dominated by mass produced quantities of everything! I hand make all my pieces, I like to think that my own ‘sewing handwriting’ is on each piece, even the imperfections, and this is what makes something special, sustainable – something that you just can’t throw away.

Do you have a sense of community within the Australian sustainable fashion, and how does that work within the wider Sydney fashion scene?

I can’t really say I do have that sense of community here in Australia. I am in contact with more sustainable designers around the globe.

Who is the client you have in mind when designing?

Someone who deep down has a creative spirit and values the different.

What else inspires your work?

Anything and everything. I am big on texture.

What are you working on right now?

I create one collection per year – so I do wait till I feel very inspired to put a label on what I am going to create next. I also like to take a break. I maintain I am one person, not a machine, and don’t want to produce just anything for the sake of it. A good break enables me to produce work that is still fresh and exciting.

Just like setting up camp, the design of a home should incorporate and engage with all aspects of its site. This is the main principle behind solar passive design. It’s about catering for our instinctive needs of shade, shelter and sun, which since caveman times have not greatly changed.

The caveman considered his home a tool, an ephemeral space that grew in response to needs, comfort and daily activities. Today these principles have been largely lost due to mass housing production and insular modern living. Fortunately, an increasing shift in focus has us reconsidering our lifestyle, our energy consumption, and our interaction with the natural environment.

There are many design methods to consider when designing a solar passive home in your local climate, but by no means is it difficult. It is a natural instinctive way of living, achieved through standard environmental design principles.

If you are embarking on renovations or building a new home ask yourself or your designer how solar passive design can be implemented to create your living house.

If you are unsure of what this may entail here are a few pointers for you to start the process and discuss with your designer.

OR I E N TAT ION From Australia’s tropical north, to the arid desert and down to the temperate south, to live in a solar passive house is to comfortably live with the climatic conditions. It begins with the correct building orientation to collect and store heat from the sun in cooler months, and minimising summer sun while encouraging cooling breezes to purge

excess heat at night. The next time you are outdoors, consider the way you shelter from the sun or rain, cool off against an ocean breeze or sunbake when you feel cool; these behaviours also apply indoors.

Like an overheated car on a summer’s day, a poorly designed house will reach extreme temperatures when exposed to the elements. However, by using the building ‘body’ – the careful placement of windows and a balance of thermal mass, insulation, shade structures and breezeways – a space is created that is living and reduces the need for mechanical heating and cooling; the occupant is forced to adapt to the climate and natural rhythms of the day and cycle of the season. 3 Thermal mass like concrete floors, water bodies and rammed earth walls can also be used effectively for cooling and heat absorption when appropriately incorporated. Thermal mass acts like a heat sink, which means it absorbs heat during the day, and at night the heat is released.

8 For natural heating, ideally a rammed earth wall is located internally where it can capture winter sun from clerestory windows. Natural ventilation and access to prevailing breezes will assist with the removal of unwanted heat.

C L I M AT E In the hot, humid climate of Australia’s north, where winter heating requirements are minimal, building orientation and design should aim to exclude sun all year round and maximise exposure to cooling breezes. Architectural form can enhance this, like in Coco Eco, where the main living pavilion twists up to the south west as a ‘windscoop’ directing available breezes.1 Lightweight construction materials are preferred, with roof and under-floor ventilation, cross-ventilation for breeze flow, light coloured, reflective roof and wall

Ideally the main living and bedroom spaces capitalise on a north-facing orientation.6 Controlling east and west solar access is one of the more difficult design issues, especially when desirable views come in to play. This can be combated with flexible shading methods, which blocks low-angled summer sun in the morning and afternoon, like adjustable, sliding louvred screens, deciduous planting and minimal tinted glazing.

To maximise and control north solar penetration is incredibly simple. Large windows to the north, shaded by the right length and angled pergola, eaves or awnings, can allow sun penetration in winter and shade in summer. 5 Also known as a ‘solar pergola’, correctly angled fixed timber louvres allow winter sun access and summer shade over an external north-facing deck. The natural change in sun angle during the seasons allows this simple design approach.

I N D O OR-OU T D O OR Just like my wardrobe adapts to changing seasons, I’d like to live in a space that provides me with the versatility of having spaces I can use in winter and summer. Both northern and southern indoor and outdoor living spaces can provide this flexibility.9 Ideally, living spaces are located on the northern part of the dwelling to maximise light and heat gain with a strong connection to the outdoors. Along the coast of Western Australia, for instance, well shaded southern spaces can capture cooling afternoon breezes for summer relief.

One thing I’ve missed most in some of the houses I’ve lived in is the ability to see, hear and feel what the weather is doing outside from the inside. If I can’t see the sky, claustrophobia sets in. High level doubleglazed windows coupled with high ceilings can increase the feeling of space with access to light and views beyond.

Unlike a flat ceiling with a traditional roof pitch, a raked ceiling angled up towards the north can ensure deep solar penetration but also sky views, which may normally be limited on small urban blocks. In addition, the angle of the roof and ceiling allows good cross-ventilation, and, with low and high level operable windows or vents, warm air can be channeled out and cool, fresh air pulled in, creating what is known as a ‘thermal chimney’ effect.7 Our time to embrace antipodean climate is well overdue. The style of an Australian living house is unique. It discards styles that are dysfunctional for its local climate, such as the eave-less ‘European’ houses and suburban ‘McMansions’ where bigger is better.

MAKING TIME IN N A TIMELESS TIM AGE

“I F YOU WA N T something done, ask a busy person to do it. The more things you do, the more you can do.” Lucille Ball If this well known quote from popular American actress and TV star, Lucille Ball, has stood the test of time—more than 20 years—today’s ‘busy person’ should be a model of productivity, expanding ever-new frontiers in terms of what we can do and achieve. This may be true for some of us, but what most of us are experiencing in our professional and personal life appears to be something quite different.

Today’s ever-advancing technology enables us to do things that even not so long ago were impossible— and for things that were possible, to do them in a fraction of time. Clearly, we can do much more, more easily, and faster than ever before, but has any of this translated into an improved quality of life for us at work and play, for our families and friends?

We live in a timeless age. Not so much in the sense of beauty, or some kind of artistic renaissance or evolution of human consciousness— but definitely in the sense that we literally have no time. We say we have no time because we are so busy. Our busyness has become a cliché for life in the 21st century; it’s the condition of modern men and women.

Life is, by definition, time. To have life, is to have time. To say you have no time, therefore, is a serious capitulation. It is tantamount to saying you have no life. The truth is, we do have time – but in this day and age we find ourselves working longer hours, burdened by unwieldy workloads

at both work and home; and, as a result, struggling to find time for ourselves and our loved ones, for each other, for the things that, in our heart of hearts, we believe are most important.

Perhaps surprisingly, in this milieu of speed-driven, space-compromised, time-poor living, there are few signs of recognition that this might be a time of crisis. Passive consumerism is nothing new – but in today’s climate of accelerating change, impacting upon every aspect of our professional and personal life, surely we need to find more efficient ways to manage the wave of information that now demands our attention 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How can we manage time better today?

You can’t work with something you don’t have. We need to make time before we can learn to use it better. So what does ‘making time’ mean for us today?

Our timelessness is essentially a mental phenomenon. When we are busy— too busy— we are essentially caught up in our mental stocktaking of, and about everything we have to do (e.g., “These things have to be done” or “I am the only person who can do the things I need to do”). Of course there are physically based addictions and compulsive behaviour too— but underlying these problems there is usually a strong habitual thought pattern of some kind.

This justifies how busy we are, and makes change difficult.

Not surprisingly, the way to break free of this mental prison we have constructed for ourselves is to find ways to direct our attention away from our habitual stream of

thoughts, opinions and attitudes.

Step out of the habitual thinking that guides your behaviour and you’ve taken the first step toward change.

As another famous saying goes, ‘seek and you shall find’. If you decide to pursue it, you will find there are many ways to achieve this, to get out of your head and open yourself to experiences of another whole dimension of life – presence, inspiration, grace, centredness, openness, surrender, silence, creativity, peace.

Some of these practices go back thousands of years – Eastern meditation, yoga, deep breathing, mantras and affirmations. Western psychology too has much to offer when it comes to handling stress and burnout, offering ways to slow down or stop; and group work where sharing one’s innermost fears and attitudes with others becomes a powerful tool of transformation.

This ‘making time’ we sorely need today might be described as a cultivating of stillness— choosing from among the many ways and means available to us, both ancient and modern. There is a key element which most of these practices have in common: the breath. Learning to become aware of your breath is an integral part of stilling your mind and living in the present, experiencing life from moment to moment.

Stillness is not an escape. Cultivating stillness each day does not require you to retreat from life, although you may do this to get started or from time to time to rejuvenate. You can learn to breathe with awareness in any and every situation or

moment of your waking life, and, in the stillness that flows from that, respond to life’s demands and situations with a new sense of balance, clarity and meaning.

The busy person described by Lucille Ball was no doubt creatively stimulated and engaged, able to multitask and maximise productivity. But two decades ago there were buffers of time and space that we don’t have today – the personal computer and the internet were in their infancy, social media as we now know it did not exist and the commercially driven information assault of our senses was nowhere near as sophisticated or intrusive. By comparison, the busy person of 2012 is typically on overload, running on empty, teetering at the brink of exhaustion, mentally over stimulated, crying out that they have no time.

So if you want something done today, it may be wiser to ask someone who has recognised the value of practising stillness, who is able to separate themselves from both the busy world around them and the ceaseless mental flow of their own thoughts and associations— and so has time to focus on quality and detail.

If enough of us begin to cultivate an inner stillness on a daily basis, we can also begin the process of reclaiming the timelessness we have all but lost today, which once belonged to great cultures and civilisations of the past. This is the timelessness that represents the potential we each have to open ourselves to the eternal and become creators in our own right.

HAVE YOU GOT CHRONIC DRAMA SYNDROME?

A W H I LE AG O I wrote a piece called ‘Do you suffer from drama syndrome?’ [you can find it on LivingNow’s website by keying ‘drama syndrome’ into the ‘search articles’ box at the top left] and it seemed to resonate with quite a few people, as the feedback has been ongoing and constant. However, just recently I realised that the syndrome can become chronic (chronic: lingering, lasting, constant, bad, intense, from the Latin chronicus and Greek khronos – time).

Yes, chronic as in ingrained over time – ingrained in your being – ouch!

If you didn’t read the original and/or can’t be bothered to now – drama syndrome relates to the notion that we are beings who constantly seek expansion and if we are too afraid to step into the unknown territory of the future and create something challenging and new we will subconsciously create a level of drama in our lives to feed our energetic needs – kind of a pseudo expansion or in the worst case energetic vampirism...

So in what warped way could this possibly become chronic and why in the world would we do that to ourselves anyway?

I think we can look at this from several different perspectives. If we take a scientific approach and consider how the brain works – specifically neuroplasticity – then it’s fair to say that, because the neurons that fire together wire together, the simple act of repeatedly buying into drama in our lives encourages our brains to literally rewire and reshape to reflect this (you can swear now if you’re the type).

Consider Dr Edward De Bono’s analogy

of rain falling on a flat plain. First the water forms puddles then the puddles join and slowly the water begins to flow to the lowest point. As it does it takes some of the soil with it and before too long little streams begin to form and eventually rivers. Next time it rains the water flows directly into these rivers.

Same with the brain. Neural networks form and strengthen on a ‘use it or lose it’ basis. Continually buy into drama and guess what? Your first and most natural reaction when faced with some sort of challenge or difficulty in life will be to go, ‘Oh poor me!’, and default into victimhood. By telling an ‘Oh poor me’ story you will naturally attract to you people who are willing to listen to an ‘Oh poor me story’ and maybe even indulge in ‘Oh poor me’ type behaviour – eg bitching type behaviour that goes something like “Jeez you know what happened to me today...”, to which the appropriate reply is, “Oh you poor thing... but let me tell you what happened to me!”, which soon becomes an enduring habit generally reinforced by escapist pursuits – because reality is of course painful – maybe even aided by drink and drugs...

The hard part about this is the more you go around the loop the more you reinforce the neural networks and behavioural patterns and – yep you got it – the more you go around the loop, such that your expectations about what you deserve change and you retreat into trying to work out what might go wrong and how you are going to deal with it when it does which – yep you guessed it – means you’re now focussed on what might go wrong and

hence put energy into creating what you don’t want. (Swear now.)

From a shamanic perspective we could consider the concept of intergenerational wounds. If your mum or dad had drama syndrome and plodded through life telling an ‘Oh poor me’ story then the behavioural patterns they pass on to you – and the energetic wound – is along the lines of, “Life sucks and when it does that’s just more evidence to prove that it does and hence more reason to find good ways of escaping”.

Don’t bother trying to cope just find a way to escape.

The other bit that accompanies this is judgement. Yes, judgement of others who have more, do more and hence must have some of what should be yours... which leads to separation from oneness and hence of course fear of judgement of others.

Bugger!

And all this just from a habit?

Yep. An habitual way of being.

You can tell if you’ve got it by asking: When good things happen to you, do you find it hard to accept and instead start waiting for something to go wrong?

When bad things happen, do you find yourself saying, ‘That’d be right!’, and getting angry and frustrated, but deep down secretly accepting that as your lot in life?

So enough already – how do you get out of it and break the habit?

It’s kind of like giving up cigarettes and going to the gym instead. The key is focus and what you do next.

Choose what you want to focus on – by that I mean thoughts – then act accordingly.

Then do it repeatedly in spite of whatever happens.

I had a lesson in this just recently. I grow medicinal plants and some of them are in my front yard. The other day I went up to the shop to get a paper and some milk and when I came back I saw that some plants had been stolen.

My initial reaction was anger followed by thoughts of GBH to the perpetrator, followed by an ‘Oh poor me story’ and a ‘That’d be right’. Slowly though I realised how disempowering that story was and how it painted me into a corner as a victim afraid of the world, thinking about how I was going to get a bigger fence and maybe some security and a BIG dog!

Eventually I realised that I didn’t want to live like that and that I didn’t need to feed the energy of the person who had done such a low act. I’m not God, I don’t need to be the judge, I don’t need to buy into someone else’s stuff and I don’t even need to know why it happened. Fear of it happening again simply draws my focus onto the fear and the negative, which is what I don’t want.

I choose then to hold my space and focus on abundance. To have compassion for the person that did that knowing that “We are punished by our sins, not for them.”[Elbert Hubbard] So, if your drama syndrome has become chronic, my advice to you is get off the drip feed of negative energy, manage your focus and CHOOSE what space you hold – NO MATTER WHAT!

WAS THE FOOTBALLER A SPACE CADET?

I A M LY I NG next to a big man in my crystal mandala, with my feet pressed up against the door of my session room. We move into no-time-space and I wait for Johno’s higher-self to take us where we need to go. As we begin our journey I notice an irregularity with his light-body – his energy field is not quite as it should be, although it has nothing to do with his reason for seeing me. I hope we will have time to deal with it later. Right now it is appropriate that I just allow what needs to unfold to happen.

We find ourselves in a mediaeval town square. It’s been raining and, rather than smelling fresh and clean, this place smells rank. There are piles of putrefying rubbish around – this is not a place that is looked after or cared for by anyone. There is a feeling of despair here. There’s a small crowd of rough-looking, pungent-smelling misfits waiting for something to happen.

We see a wooden cart approach with a half-starved, filthy man chained to it. I try not to lead Johno in his understanding of what is happening and how this relates to him.

Do you recognise anyone here?, I telepath Johno.

What? I can see he is having a little difficulty comprehending that we are in another time and place witnessing something relevant to him.

Feel into the energy of the people here, does anyone feel familiar.

The bloke on the cart – that’s me!

You are right, go over and step into his body and tell me how he’s feeling.

Well he feels like a skinny little bloke, not very strong.

No. How is he feeling emotionally, tell me what he is feeling now.

Oh. Well he’s not frightened. He’s angry – and he’s really sad.

The grubby, weary petty officials waiting near the rickety wooden structure in the centre of the square unchain the man on the cart and lead him up the rotting steps onto the platform where his fate awaits him.

As they put the thick, rough rope around his neck he scans the crowd and sees what he has been hoping both to see and not to see.

There at the back of the crowd are his wife and child. They look totally destitute and utterly despairing. His eyes meet theirs and he starts sobbing.

What is he feeling now? I ask Johno is sobbing. He feels like shit. He feels like he is abandoning his wife and child. All he did was steal one loaf of bread to feed them and now he’s getting hung for it.

I watch as with little ceremony they place the noose around his neck, read out

his name and offence, and open the trapdoor beneath him. The sound of his neck cracking echoes across the square as his wife covers their son’s eyes.

I catch Johno as he leaves his body and we move into no-time-space.

My neck! Lack of mobility in his neck was is his reason for seeing me.

What are you holding there?

Despair, anger, a feeling of utter helplessness. He starts crying. I let them down!

They will die without me. I left them. I did not mean to.

Do you see how this relates to your neck challenge, now?

Yes. Would you like to release it?

Too bloody right.

When Johno first entered my shop it was like a shadow had passed over the sun – he blocked out that much light. My petite assistant Bryony had an irrational fit of the giggles when she set eyes on him. He is just unbelievably large, solid and muscular. He is a regional football player who stands an excellent chance of being selected to play for his country, but the lack of mobility in his neck was proving a handicap. He had tried everything to fix it – physio, massage, heat treatment, even electronic devices. None of them had worked permanently; some had brought only temporary relief at best.

He has just released the primary emotional cause of his neck mobility challenge, which has come as a total surprise to him, but there is more. I decide to take

I call on his wife and child from that time and suggest he begs their forgiveness, which is given freely and accepted emotionally. I also advise him to forgive himself, which he does. He sees the energy he was holding in his neck evaporate as he accepts their unconditional love. As he says goodbye to his loved ones, he moves his neck freely.

He has cheered up. Brilliant. Are we done?

Not quite. I think there is something else, if you don’t mind?

How does he f...

He is happy to be here in service to the light on this mission. He is beyond fear. He has been trained for this and he is good at it. Alarms are going off in my head. I need to evade...

Behind him I see the enormous black hole that is the enemy mothership.

Utterly void, the lack of stars are what defines its presence. It is totally featureless, approaching fast and very, very big.

The opposing forces in the skirmish disappear. He and his companions are alone in space in their tiny craft. They form a holding pattern and wait for orders which they will never hear.

The mothership belches a cloud of nothingness towards them. It destroys their craft and the brave beings inside in a nanosecond, in a way that is beyond comprehension.

The physicality of their beings ceases to exist but their deaths are not the end of it.

Their very essence, their souls, their lightbodies, are deliberately fragmented into millions of pieces and scattered throughout the Universe. Very nasty.

I am so utterly fascinated by this unfolding drama I almost forget to call Johno out of his traumatised and rapidly dispersing light-body.

Oooh. Not good.

We witness the endless separation of his being into minute particles, absorbed by a vastness that is beyond comprehension.

A long time passes; then we see other light beings of many types gathering his soul together – volunteers, carrying out soul retrieval on a cosmic scale.

We call on them and thank them. They are happy to see he has reincarnated on Earth and advise it will take time for his being to become completely whole again but he is doing well.

We return to our present time and space and I debrief him.

He sits up and moves his head, neck and shoulders freely.

“Mate, that was sensational! It’s fixed.”

“So you will be referring your team mates then?” I give him a cheeky grin.

“I doubt it. Too weird.” He rolls his eyes in disbelief of his own recent experience.

I escort him downstairs, accept payment and advise him not to drive.

As he leaves, Bryony comments quietly on the totally spaced out look on his face. He turns around at the door.

“Hey, I heard that. I’m no space cadet.

I graduated!” He chuckles to himself as he leaves, shaking his head.

FORCED MEDICAL TREATMENT – how effective is it?

T H E COLD SP R I NG morning of March 24, 2011, promised a routine day as Maryanne Godboldo cleared away the breakfast dishes in her modest two storey brick and weatherboard home in East Detroit. Unknown to Maryanne, a Wayne County child protection (CPS) worker was lodging a JCO5B form at the county courthouse. She did not agree with the treatment that Maryanne’s 13-year-old daughter Ariana was receiving from her family physician and believed the girl should be medicated instead. The social worker intended to force Ariana from her home later that day and admit her to a nearby psychiatric facility for injections of strong antipsychotic medication.

Forced medical treatment is not a rare occurrence confined to grimy hospitals in totalitarian countries. Medical ethicists report that it is a common event that happens thousands of times each day in developed countries with sophisticated health care systems.

Over a one month period alone, one US emergency department recorded 314 involuntary treatment orders. According to researchers at University of Louisville School of Medicine , half were psychiatric admissions, while the other 50% were coerced ‘medical or surgical admissions’.

Current thinking in medical ethics defines the gold standard of patients’ rights to medical decision-making as: ‘[mentally] competent individuals are allowed to make their own treatment decisions: incompetent ones are not’, according to researchers George Annas and Joan Densberger. This definition works well in cases of mental impairment or to authorise doctors to administer life-saving medical treatment to depressed individuals who have declined treatment for a physical condition.

Increasingly, though, treatments are forced onto persons who are mentally sound and competent to make decisions, but who merely prefer a different treatment option or wish to attend a different hospital from the ones their doctors prefer.

In some cases, coercion is carried out using potentially lethal force, as experienced by the Godboldo family in Michigan. Once the CPS worker had lodged the form, she returned from the courthouse and parked her government car not far from Godboldo’s home. From her cell phone she dialled 911 to ask for police assistance to remove Ariana.

When the officer confronted Maryanne at her front door, she asked to see a warrant.

Allegedly, when no warrant was produced, Maryanne refused to hand over her daughter and closed her door. The situation rapidly escalated when police summoned backup.

Within half an hour the tactical response team had arrived in body armour, with high calibre assault weapons, riot control agents and an armoured vehicle. Why? The previous year, Maryanne Godboldo had first appeared on the CPS radar after Ariana had experienced a severe physical reaction to a series of vaccinations within hours of the shots. Maryanne returned to the paediatrician later the same day, asking him to investigate Ariana’s sudden fever, irritability and twitching symptoms, but he allegedly refused. Later that day, she took her daughter to a nearby paediatric clinic, where she says doctors also refused to investigate the vaccination side effects and prescribed psychiatric medications instead.

Dianne, rushed her to no less than three hospitals in a frantic search for medical help.

At one hospital the young girl – who showed no signs of puberty − was misdiagnosed as being pregnant before doctors at the third hospital correctly diagnosed her tumour and performed surgery to remove it.

The false report of pregnancy with its serious implications had put the parents on the Australian child protection department’s radar after the doctors made a report to the authorities – before they had performed conclusive pregnancy tests, which of course turned out to be negative.

At the same time, the shocking misdiagnosis had shattered the parents’ confidence in the local medical system

Since Ariana had no history of mental or emotional problems, Maryanne began to suspect that her daughter was receiving the wrong medication. This was confirmed when the strong drugs were evidently having a detrimental effect on her daughter. Maryanne then sought a second opinion from another doctor who, she says, restored Ariana’s health by gradually weaning her off the medication over a six-month period. Despite the dramatic improvement to Ariana’s health, doctors at the clinic disagreed with Ariana’s treating doctor and made a report to CPS, who removed Ariana from her home to force the medication onto her again.

A similar event occurred in Australia during 2003, when an 11-year-old New South Wales girl had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer after her parents, Mark and

an, while Sarah recovered from surgery, they sought a second medical opinion and began making plans to take their daughter to a specialist cancer hospital in the US for further cancer treatment.

Before the parents could take Sarah to an overseas hospital, a secret court hearing authorised police to use ‘any force necessary’ to apprehend Sarah and administer whatever treatment doctors at the local hospital ‘deemed necessary’. This court order forced Sarah into a six-month involuntary hospital detention that included forced medication and surgery – all of which turned out to be tragically unsuccessful.

The forced treatment denied Mark and Dianne their parental rights to choose the best available medical care and in particular to have their daughter’s rare cancer treated

by overseas experts. At the same time, Sarah had been denied palliative care until she was released from state wardship, only two weeks before her death. Once placed again into her parents’ custody, they immediately left their home state of NSW and flew with their dying daughter to Melbourne on a commercial aircraft. It was at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne – with her family by her side – that Sarah received compassionate end-of-life care until her death two weeks later. A research brief prepared by Rand Health, a think tank for health policy makers, attempts to answer the question: does involuntary medical treatment work?

It concludes that even for those who are mentally impaired: ‘There is no evidence that a court order is necessary to achieve compliance and good outcomes, or that a court order, in and of itself, has any independent effect on outcomes... Empirical evidence on effectiveness of involuntary outpatient treatment is slim.’

Given that these statistics pertain to those whose decision making ability is impaired by mental illness, is there any case in which it is necessary and ethical therefore to force medical treatment onto persons with sound and unimpaired judgement? It seems evident that forcing medicine on mentally sound individuals, while denying them the freedom to choose their own health care, has no positive medical value at all and is easily subject to abuse by bureaucrats and political systems.

For the present time, Ariana Godboldo has been allowed to leave the psychiatric facility and return home, while her mother Maryanne anxiously awaits the next court decision. Her wishes are that the judge will reinstate her parental rights, that Ariana will continue to be treated by the trusted family doctor and that she be allowed to resume her previously normal and happy life at home, free from psychiatric medication.

For Sarah, it is too late. She is now in a place without pain or politics. Clearly, what happened to Sarah must never happen again.

Sarah’s powerful and exemplary life is told in Eve Hillary’s new book, Sarah’s Last Wish, now a best seller. Since its publication, the book has so deeply touched the nation that it has sparked positive reforms in the health care system. While Sarah’s gift to society cost her the ultimate price, it remains forever one with infinitely positive social value: she gives Australians a new moral compass.

UNWRAPPING THE GIFT WE ARE TO OURSELVES by Helen Ferrara

H AV E YOU NO T IC E D that many of us seem to believe that if only we had the wealth, body shape, lover or, oh!, just this one next thing we crave for (whatever that might be), we would be fulfilled and so perfectly happy? Fulfilment might be described as a state of being that is almost synonymous with happiness, an enduring sort of happiness which is more like contentment, yet somehow we see fulfilment as inextricably linked to what we accomplish in life and how well we perform, and we are constantly chasing after the next goal we have set or that has been set for us. One of the meanings given for fulfill is “to comply with”, and we certainly do that.

We comply and conform to the standards, rules and regulations set, invariably without even stopping to think if we agree with them or whether we believe they are fair or moral. In fact, so many of us even pass on chain emails simply because we are so used to complying, but does all of this lead us to fulfilment? Alas, all too often it brings stress, a feeling of being time-poor, (“If only I had more time!” is a wishful thought that is all too familiar) burnout, arguments, poor health, and the list goes on. So we crash, blame ourselves, our loved ones or others, and then start again, this time incorporating a special course on time or stress management and other self-improvement courses, always trying to cram in more and more.

If we are honest with ourselves, it is easy to see that continuing on this path will actually lead us further and further from fulfilment. What if, as so many enlightened ones have told us, all is perfect already and all that we need is within us? How could that be so? After all there is much that needs improving in the world. Yet if we imagine for a moment that within us is the potential of bringing ourselves to fruition (another of the meanings of fulfil), then it becomes obvious that we need to look within. We all start this journey as children – the exploration of the self, which is how we learn to talk and to walk – but too soon well-meaning adults put a stop to our further delving within, making us instead focus on outside things – so they can socialise us and educate us. Sadly we are taught to go through life ignoring the little voice that calls us to look within and live by our own truth.

We are tested, measured, weighed and

constantly made to compete with others, and invariably we are found not to be good enough. As a result we are taught to trust ‘experts’, ‘rules’, and the way things ‘should be’ (which includes many outdated traditions) rather than ourselves, because we are obviously not good enough. So of course we will not listen to ourselves, but how can we be anything or do anything in life, let alone understand or discover anything, if not by starting with ourselves? Regardless of who or what one may personally believe is responsible for the creation of human beings (be it God, the universe or even just a happy synchronistic coming together of all the exact requirements for life), it is difficult to get past the point that by being me – a living being – I have me, just like you have you, totally and absolutely. It is mind blowing to really let the fact of this sink in. If only we would look at it, then we could reclaim what we were getting

to know so well as young children. We could, and we can, look at the ‘me’ and the ‘you’ that makes us who we are, and use our senses to explore ourselves and get to know ourselves again.

We have ourselves – so we are a gift to ourselves – a gift that allows us to navigate through life. What if we chose to go back to this amazing and only partially explored gift of ourselves, this gift we have still not fully p unwrapped, which in many cases is lying

there abandoned and waiting to be wanted, to be loved, and accept that the gift that we are to ourselves is an expression of love?

Learning about this gift and then allowing it to unfold and nurturing it to fulfil its potential, as we come to understand it, means a conscious use of our creativity. In accepting our living self – our whole self – as the gift that allows us to live, we make a conscious decision to live. In doing this we connect to the whole of life – this is the whole that is greater than the sum of the parts, the whole that gives us meaning.

The sense of contentment and abundance that comes from accepting oneself as a gift is incredible, and so is the sense of peace. Ego becomes just a part of the whole of the self, and each part naturally does what each part is best for, harmoniously.

No longer do we blame ourselves for mistakes, as they are not seen as mistakes but paths to learning. In taking time to look, we see more clearly, and we discover that what we once would have classed as mistakes are really opportunities for growth. In further exploring this gift of our self, in getting to know it, then we are led to what is the natural inclination for the growth and fulfilment of the self, and so we start believing that the self is enough – enough for what? Enough and more than enough, infinitely abundant in fact, for a rich and fulfilling life; enough for giving the cues to where we go to from here, as it constantly unfolds and leads us on a diverse and entrancing adventure that living is, that living was always meant to be before we were led astray and stopped from unwrapping the gift we are to ourselves.

My desire this year is to entice you to accept the biggest gift you have – the gift that you are to yourself, as in our present situation on earth we cannot afford to pass up any of the gifts that have been bestowed on us.

Your way really is the best way for you! Sure there are always things that you can learn, but if you listen to your inner voice, the one that comes with the gift of yourself, then you will be guided to that which resonates with your truth and can help you grow to fulfil your own potential for true contentment. And that is only the beginning, for who knows what wonders your fulfilled self is likely to accomplish?

What do you think about goal setting?

Haha when you asked how I would achieve my plans. I nearly said “Goals”. In my diary I have a long-term goal plan and a weekly goal plan to accomplish the ultimate goal.

It’s incredibly important that you have a constant reminder of what you are trying to achieve.

What are you doing with your life now?

I currently live in Sydney; I’m putting everything into a remarkable folk rock band that I started with my partner, called Gypsy’s Gift. We channel our music with nothing but love for the art we are projecting.

What’s the best thing that has ever happened to you?

I wrote a song that went to #13 in the dance aria charts. It made me realise that for a couple of years I had not been present or even cared about my life. I was unhappy and I needed to make myself happy. I left a destructive relationship and moved to Sydney to give my music 100%. Fate then introduced me to an angel who is now my life partner.

Do you have other plans for your future life?

Music has always, and will always be, my life. In the future I plan to be living comfortably doing what I love to do.

What effect did that have on your life?

It was a chain of events that completely changed my life. I knew I had to be strong and listen to my inner voice. I could have dwelled in the dark on things of the past and it would have been easy. Instead I decided to fix myself and break away from the mess. It was the hardest thing I ever did.

How are you going to achieve that?

By working extremely hard and not letting any day, hour or minute go to waste, no matter how many people slam doors in my face. Nothing in this life is handed to you on a silver platter.

What’s the worst thing that has ever happened to you?

When I was seven we moved to Australia after my mum met a man. We moved around constantly during my upbringing.

We even spent five years in Dubai. Even at a young age I felt something was wrong.

I was trapped in ultimate hell for ten years.

Domestic abuse, torture, psychological abuse, sexual harassment – the list goes on. I literally couldn’t sleep at night I would listen out for every sound. I didn’t want to wake up to find my mum dead.

How did that affect you?

I was left extremely traumatised. My whole life I felt like a mother. I always tried to be strong for my mum and my brothers and, when we moved back to Australia after the split, I felt it was my time to cave – and I gave up. I started self-medicating, hanging around people that didn’t care about me. I didn’t want anyone to care about me. I was on a mission to destroy myself.

Have you been able to see the gift in that?

It has taught me that surrounding yourself with the right people is crucial to your happiness in life. It’s been a tough road but

Most of the focus is on preventing bullying in our school yards, workplaces, through the internet and in our homes but there’s not much around to help with the after effects of being bullied. It is the hurt and pain that wounds us when bullied and those invisible scars don’t go away just because the bullying has stopped. The iPhone app ‘Tap Bullies Away’ was developed to help heal the emotional and mental impact of bullying using Emotional Freedom Technique.

AVN Prevails in NSW Supreme Court against HCCC The Australian Vaccination Network (AVN) has succeeded in its case against the NSW Healthcare Complaints Commission (HCCC) in the Supreme Court of NSW. The Court handed down its decision on Friday, 24 February 2012, finding in favour of the AVN on its application for a declaration that the HCCC, in investigating complaints made about the AVN in 2009 and then issuing a public warning about the AVN on 26th July, 2010, exceeded its jurisdiction under the HCCC’s governing legislation, the Health Care Complaints Act (NSW).

From the very beginning of the HCCC investigation, the AVN had always adopted the position that the HCCC did not have jurisdiction in this case and that the complaints submitted about the AVN were not complaints coming under the ambit of the Health Care Complaints Act. The

AVN now feels gratified that the Supreme Court has agreed with the original submissions made by the AVN to the HCCC that it lacked the jurisdiction to investigate the complaints made and that therefore, the public warning issued by the HCCC about the AVN was without foundation. The HCCC’s public warning about the AVN has been widely reported since it was first issued on 26 July, 2010 and remained on the HCCC’s website during the course of the court proceedings.

The HCCC public warning about the AVN was removed from the HCCC’s website within hours of a decision by the Supreme Court being handed down.

“The only thing the AVN was guilty of is providing information which may not be available elsewhere and potentially goes against government policy”, said Meryl Dorey, President of the AVN. “We wish to be nothing more than a portal for information on the relative benefits, risks and efficacy of vaccination. This information is intended for consideration in conjunction with government and institutional medical data to allow

families a choice of information when considering their options.”

The AVN looks forward to continuing to offer Australians and Australian families a choice when looking for information and assisting them with their information gathering processes on this very important health issue.

Mars eventually stations (stops moving backwards) at 3º Virgo and the juggernaut starts moving forward again on 14th April. Situations may deteriorate further and tempers continue to flare, but this five-week part of the cycle offers clarity and understanding. It may be too soon to take action, but as the old ways become redundant or obsolete, there is time to pause and consider what needs to be done to maintain integrity.

Once Mars turns direct (14th April) it is time to deal with the fallout from the past couple of months. We instinctively know if a relationship, situation, circumstance or condition is unsustainable and are likely to make radical changes. V E N US E C L I P SE OF T H E SU N On 6th June this year there will be a transit of Venus to the sun as Venus passes directly between Earth and the sun, obscuring or eclipsing a small portion of the solar disc.

When Venus passes directly in front of the sun and lines up with the earth, the resonance of Venus is highly focused on our planet allowing a new level of intuitive awareness to permeate human consciousness. Venus will appear as a small black dot moving across the

sun over a period of a few hours. Such transits are extremely rare – the last occurrence was in June, 2004, but before that we need to go back to 1874 and 1882. The next pair of transits will be in 2117 and 2125; so mark 6th June in your diary as this will be your last chance this lifetime to witness this astronomical event. I’ve featured it in this month’s column so you have time to consider how to integrate the Venus energy into your life.

R E T U R N OF T H E G ODDE SS This year’s Venus transit coincides with the intersection of the ecliptic (the path of the sun) with our galaxy’s equatorial plane, which reaches exactitude in December this year, heralding the beginning of a new 25,000 year cycle as prophesised by the Mayans.

Many believe the new cycle is connected with the reintegration and emergence of the divine feminine principle, birthing the balance of masculine and feminine consciousness.

Venus is the ruler of the heart chakra, the centre of harmony, magnetic attraction, love, romance, creativity and sexual bliss and where we find our capacity for compassion and appreciation of beauty. Venus is also the planet of wealth and resources and plays a prominent role in financial matters and the flow of money. When we are out of balance or acting from a place of fear or judgement, the heart chakra closes up and we have difficulty trusting and giving and receiving love. Our immune system can be adversely affected, leading to a whole host of physical ailments.
