A BAD MOMS CHRISTMAS

DADDY’S HOME 2

Raunchy Christmas sequel has more mums going wild with ‘A Bad Moms Christmas’ which follows our three underappreciated and over-burdened mums (Amy, Kiki and Carla) as they rebel against the challenges and expectations of Christmas in the hopes of creating a more perfect holiday for their families. If that wasn’t hard enough, they have to do all that while hosting and entertaining their ultimate holiday foes: their own mothers. By the end of the journey, our mums have redefined how to make the holidays special for their families and it ends up bringing them closer to their own mums. Staring Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn, this holidaythemed sequel is out on November 3rd. The first ‘Bad Moms’ was full of partying, swearing, jokes, reckless behaviour and nudity so it’s safe to expect more of the same with a holiday twist. The cast is full of hilarious women and add to that the pressure they are under to create the most wonderful time of the year, plenty of alcohol and shopping and you are bound to enjoy this feel good film that all mums (and probably dads to) can relate to.

‘Daddy’s Home 2’ is back November 17th with John Cena, Mark Wahlberg, Mel Gibson and Will Ferrell where father and step father Dusty and Brad join forces to make Christmastime perfect for the children. Their newfound partnership soon gets put to the test when Dusty’s old-school macho dad and Brad’s gentle father arrive to turn the holiday upside down. From trying to find the perfect tree and a nativity play that has the grown up’s dressing up too this is one new feel good Christmas film for the whole family to enjoy together.

THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS ‘The Man Who Invented Christmas’ starring Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer and Jonathan Pryce comes to screens from 1st December and tells of a magical journey that led to the creation of Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and other classic characters from ‘A Christmas Carol.’ The film shows how Charles Dickens mixed real life inspirations with his vivid imagination to conjure up unforgettable characters and a timeless tale, forever changing the holiday season into the celebration we know and love today.

Joel Dommett interview

It was a real gamble. I thought a lot about the pros and cons. But I felt like I’m quite an optimistic person and if anyone could do it maybe I could”

14|living Local

Joel Dommett interview

That comedian guy with a beard from that thing you saw Comedian and star of I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here Joel Dommett, talks about touring, his stint in the jungle, and other extreme physical challenges, ahead of his show at Newcastle City Hall in January. Joel Dommett is mid-way through his huge national tour. Is he knackered? Not really. ‘Essentially, I’m doing two hours work a day,’ he laughs. ‘It’s a very intensive two hours, but it’s not too bad.’ The 31-year-old comic has been delighting audiences for nearly a decade on the comedy circuit. But after causing quite a stir during his time in the jungle on the latest series of ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’ – in which he was runner-up – he’s been rocketed into the big league. Much of what won Dommett votes on the ITV reality series shines through in his stand-up; his irresistible charm, perpetual upbeat attitude and nimble quick wit (although those jungle fans also couldn’t get enough of his ripped physique). But it’s live on stage where the Gloucestershire-born stand-up is at his best. His shows are grand and ambitious, weaving gripping stories amongst smart observations and goofy setpieces. No wonder he’s had to add more tour dates… This is the second batch of dates for your live tour. How does it feel to have had to extend it due to popular demand? ‘It’s mad! My agent keeps on cleverly adding dates without asking – which I absolutely don’t mind. It’s now creeping over 100.’ Are you enjoying touring? ‘I’m really enjoying it. Everyone keeps on saying to me, “You must absolutely hate it, you must be really bored of the show…” No, I think it just gets better and better, and I’m enjoying it more. I’ve taken my best friend Steve as my tour manager, we’ve known each other since we were 11, so we’re like two little kids – we’re both very giddy. I’m travelling around the UK with my best friend performing to people who actually want to see me. It’s a dream come true.’

How are you finding playing huge venues compared to intimate comedy clubs? ‘It’s kind of perfect, actually. My shows, weirdly, have always been quite big, but whereas before they were kind of ironically big in small venues, now they just fit the bigger rooms. There’s a real story arch to the show, a huge crescendo, and a really big epic ending – it’s a really fun, big, stupid show. And that’s what I think is important for the position I’m in; people saw me on a reality show being kind of funny, but I feel I’m in a real position where I have to deliver more. I’m fully aware that this reality TV thing might be a small bubble and that bubble might burst, so I’ve got to do my absolute best to deliver a show which is beyond people’s expectations so they come back to see me again.’ Indeed, you’ve gained a whole new fan base since ‘I’m A Celebrity…’ Are they different from the usual comedy-going crowd? ‘Yes, but I was really scared that it would be an absolute nightmare. I thought: it’s going to be lots of screaming young girls and younger people who haven’t seen comedy before. But the demographic at the shows has been so mixed. There are older couples, groups of lads, groups of women, and everyone’s been a delight. It’s such a pleasure to be doing a show where you feel like everyone’s excited to be there. For a lot of people it is their first comedy show, but we’re trying our best to entertain them as well as educate them. It’d be quite easy to do a generic, easy stand-up show and just talk about the jungle. But even though I’m quite commercial in my comedy, I like to think that it’s also slightly weird and not completely straightforward. So hopefully they come away from their first comedy show going, “Oh, that’s what stand-up can be.”’ How much do you have to acknowledge the jungle on stage? Do audiences want to hear about it? ‘Before the tour I wrote loads of jungle stuff because I thought that’s what they’ll want, I thought they were going to demand living Local | 15

Joel Dommett Interview it. But I quickly realised that they just didn’t want to hear it. Now, I barely mention it, it’s just part of the story. At the first couple of shows I called Carol Vorderman on stage, just because I thought it might be funny. Then I realised that, although it was funny, I can’t call Carol Vorderman every night, it could start to get a bit grating for her.’ Was it a difficult decision to go on ‘I’m a Celeb…’ in the first place? ‘It was a real gamble. I thought a lot about the pros and cons. But I felt like I’m quite an optimistic person and if anyone could do it maybe I could – I don’t really get angry or frustrated with other people very easily. The entire time I was in there I was so scared that the comedy community was going to shun me because I’d gone into a massively commercial reality show. But since I’ve got out it’s been so nice, they’ve been so lovely, as well as this new demographic of people. To have both of those teams on my side is the dream, really.’ The Australian jungle isn’t the only place you’ve visited recently. You’ve been travelling around the world with Nish Kumar meeting some of the strongest and toughest people on the planet for a Comedy Central series. Could your fitness levels keep up with them? ‘They tried to, but no. I did a 32 mile marathon with some Mexican guys, I did a 5km relay race in Brazil with a 100 kilo log, I did stick fighting in Kenya… Basically it was four months

of my body being absolutely battered.’ Were the Bushtucker Trials good practice for it? ‘Well, all the ridiculous stuff in the jungle did help me. I spent about four months eating ridiculous things and sleeping in uncomfortable places – I’m actually really good at that now.’ I guess it’s a good skill to have. You never know when you might need it. ‘It’s especially a good skill to have now I’m on tour and I have to sleep in Holidays Inns in Stafford. I think: “You know what? I’ve slept in worse…”’ ‘Joel Dommett: Live’ 26th January 2018 at Newcastle City Hall. For tickets and further information, please visit: www.joeldommett.com.

e may be living in a Golden Age of television, Netflix and Box-sets, where you can hang out on the sofa and watch hours of award-winning series and not even feel the tiniest bit guilty about it (Fact: We do that too. It’s our go-to Sunday afternoon plan or if the kids by some miracle go to bed at 7pm you can find us on the sofa with control in hand by 7.30pm.) But, we’d also like to suggest a new concept: binge reading. Yes it sounds like more work than sitting in front of the television but your attention span will thank you. We are issuing a challenge this holiday period: pick up a book, we have some suggestions for you.

‘Why Mummy Drinks’ is the brilliant novel from Gill Sims, the author of the online sensation Peter and Jane. It is Mummy’s 39th birthday. She is staring down the barrel of a future of people asking if she wants to come to their advanced yoga classes, and polite book clubs where everyone claims to be tiddly after one glass of Pinot Grigio and says things like ‘Oooh gosh, are you having another glass?’ But Mummy does not want to go quietly into that good night of women with sensible haircuts who ‘live for their children’ and stand in the playground trying to trump each other with their offspring’s achievements, and boasting about latest holidays. Instead, she clutches a large glass of wine, muttering ‘FML’ over and over again. Until she remembers a gem of an idea she’s had. Available now.

Wine

Love eating red meat and drinking red wine? Try one of these cabernet sauvignons to get the juices flowing. The undisputed king of the grapevine, not only is cabernet sauvignon prized for its bold blackcurrant flavours, but it’s also the primary grape in some of the greatest wines in the world. A Bordeaux red (specifically from the left bank of the Gironde) is made up of a blend of red grape varieties, and you won’t find a famous label such as Margaux or Pauillac without a generous measure of cab sav, which brings power, finesse and ageing potential - but that’s not to say the wines can’t be enjoyed young. 1. Busby Estate Langhorne Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, South Eastern Australia (£4.98, Asda, in-store only) On the cabernet trail for an easy drinking value wine? Look no further than this one - the ripe blackberry fruit, soft tannins, ever-so-light minty note and savoury, slightly dry finish has enough fruity concentration to tug on the taste buds.

2. TTD Padthaway Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, Australia (£6.50, Sainsbury’s) With a smidgen of shiraz to spice up the freshly crushed blackberry and plummy fruit, a touch of mint rides on gentle waves of cabernet fruit with fine tannins and a juicy freshness on the finish keeps you coming back for more. 3. Warwick Cape Lady Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, Western Cape, South Africa (£8.50, Morrisons) Along with a hint of mocha, this classy cab sav is brimming with blueberry and blackberry fruits and with a velvety smooth richness, strength and purity folded into soft tannins, it's big on flavour without the hefty price tag. 20|living Local

Location and climate is always the trump card and while Bordeaux is its homeland, this hardy, thickskinned grape has spread its vines far and wide. Along with expensive New World examples, such as the Margaret River in Australia, you can still enjoy a reasonably priced cabernet sauvignon from most winemaking regions. Here are some contemporary cabs that caught our eye and satisfied our senses... 4. Robert Oatley Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, Australia (£9.99, The Co-operative, in-store only) Right at the heart of the Australian wine scene, you would normally have to fork out for a wine from this famous region, so run, don't walk to snap this label up. Soft and herbal, deliciously pungent black fruit aromas are followed by a forest floor of blackberry fruits with smooth tannins, cassis, dark chocolate flavours and a lingering vegetal note.

5. Bremerton Estate Coulthard Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, Langhorne Creek, South Australia (£14.95, Frontier Fine Wines) A wine of this calibre is the Aussie version of a good Bordeaux and while it's built to go the distance, it's drinking beautifully now. Perfumed and concentrated with lifted mint on the rich blackcurrant and creme de cassis fruit and wellintegrated oak on the long, silky finish, it simply begs to be drunk. Sip, savour and watch it disappear with your best cut of meat.

Christmas Movies

CLASSIC CHRISTMAS SOFA MOVIES We couldn’t review the new Christmas releases without it making us reach for some of our favourite Christmas classics, from Home Alone to Miracle on 34th Street, Christmas Movies make Christmas magical. How many of these feature on your families Christmas must watch list? Christmas Movie’s in matching Christmas pyjamas while the tree lights twinkle and the kids argue over who has the most marshmallows on their hot chocolate make this our favourite season so try some of our favourite’s from the comfort of your sofa this Winter. ‘Home Alone’ when 8 year old Kevin McCallister acts out the night before a family trip to Paris, his mother makes him sleep in the attic. After the McCallisters mistakenly leave for the airport without Kevin, he awakens to an empty house and assumes his wish to have no family has come true. His excitement soon fades when two con men plan to rob the McCallister residence and he alone must protect the family home. Kevin returns in ‘Home Alone 2’ where he loses track of his father at the airport, he mistakenly gets on a plane to New York City while the rest of his family fly to Florida. Now alone in the Big Apple, Kevin cons his way into a room at the Plaza Hotel and begins his usual antics. But when Kevin discovers that the sticky bandits are on the loose, he struggles to stop them from robbing an elderly man’s toy store just before Christmas. ‘Elf’ Buddy was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised to adulthood by Santa’s elves. Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn’t fit in, the adult Buddy travels to New York, in full elf uniform, in search of his real father. As it happens, this is Walter Hobbs, a cynical businessman. Walter reluctantly attempts to start a relationship with Buddy with increasingly chaotic results. As the holiday’s approach, Clark Griswold wants to have the perfect Christmas in ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ so he pesters his wife and kids as he tries to make sure everything was in line, including the tree and house decorations. However his hick cousin Eddie and his family show up unplanned and start living in their camper van on the Griswold property.

‘Love actually’ is one of my all time favourites and I cannot wrap Christmas presents without watching it, nine intertwined stories examine the complexities of the one emotion that connects us all: love. Among the characters explored is David, the handsome new prime minister who falls for a young junior, Sarah, a graphic designer whose devotion to her mentally ill brother complicates her love life and Harry, a married man who gets tempted by his attractive new secretary. ‘Die Hard’, New York City policeman John McClane is visiting his estranged wife and two daughters on Christmas Eve. He joins her at a holiday party in the headquarters of the Japanese-owned business she works for. But the festivities are interrupted by a group of terrorists who take over the exclusive high-rise, and everyone in it. Very soon McClane realises that there’s no one to save the hostages but him.

Christmas Movies ‘Polar Express’ is an inspiring adventure based on the beloved children’s book. When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he emarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol’ The Muppets perform the classic Dickens holiday tale, with Kermit the frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge. Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear and Sam the Eagle weave in and out of the story, while Scrooge receives visits from spirits of three Christmases, past, present and future. They show him the error of his self-serving ways, but the miserable old man seems to be past any hope of redemption and happiness. ‘Gremlins’ a gadget salesman is looking for a special gift for his son and finds one in a store in Chinatown. The shopkeeper is reluctant to sell him the “mogwai” but sells it to him with the warning to never expose him to bright light, water or feed him after midnight. All of this happens and the result is a gang of gremlins that decide to tear up the town on Christmas Eve. ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ an old man going by the name Kris Kringle fills in for an intoxicated Santa in Macy’s annual Thanksgiving day parade. Kringle proves to be such a hit that he is soon appearing regularly at the chain’s main store in Manhattan. Kringle surprises customers and employees alike by claiming that he really is Santa Claus, it leads to a court case to determine his mental health and, more importantly, his authenticity. Workaholic Howard wants to make things up to his son in ‘Jingle All the Way’. He promises to get Jamie the hottest toy of the season, Turbo Man, even though it’s Christmas Eve and the toy is practically sold out. As Howard hunts down the elusive gift, he runs into mailman Myron, another father on the same quest. With the clock winding down, Howard’s moral code is tested as he starts to learn the real meaning of Christmas.

The Holiday’ is another must watch while wrapping film, two women, one from America and one from Britain, swap homes at Christmastime after bad breakups with their boyfriends. Each woman finds romance with a local man but realises the imminent return home may end the relationship. ‘ Arthur Christmas’, When the unthinkable happens, and Santa misses one child out of hundreds of millions, someone has to save the day. It’s up to Arthur, Santa’s youngest son, to deliver a present to the forgotten tyke before Christmas morning dawns. Santa Claus: The Movie’ In ancient times, a man called Claus, who delivers toys in his small village, fulfils his destiny to become Santa Claus after meeting an expert toy-making elf, Patch, in the North Pole. In the present day Santa Claus has become overwhelmed by his workload, and the disgruntled Patch flees the workshop to New York City. There, Patch unknowingly threatens the fate of Christmas by taking a job at a failing toy company run by a scheming businessman.

Technology

Why Wearable Tech Is The Future Of Personal Healthcare

T

he pace of progress in technology is staggering and is showing great potential in the field of healthcare, with a wearable monitor being one of the products in developement.

Just over 15 years ago, many of us were still excitedly dialling up our Internet connection and waiting for those pips, bleeps and other agonising noises to come from the desktop. These days, you're probably in the minority if you still have a full-size PC at home.

makes people look silly or not, wearable technology is arguable one of the most exciting and visible areas making inroads into the healthcare market. Samsung's recently revealed Simband is a great example of exactly what we're talking about. The device, which is a wristband with digital display, is still in its prototype stage, along with the Sami operating system (Samsung Architecture Multimedia Interactions), and already it poses a pretty exciting prospect.

Technology is at once marvellous and spectacularly frightening. After you reach 25 there's already a million and one things you don't know about what's possible with even basic computer equipment, which most of those younger will be familiar with. The pace of progress is staggering and thankfully, on top of making it easier to play Clash of the Clans, the perpetual march is genuinely improving life in many ways, and there's no greater potential than in the field of healthcare. The obvious ideal is an Elysium -style gizmo that we lie in and have any ailments - from cancer to coughs - instantly cured. Of course that's probably a few decades away (and then some), but nevertheless the marriage of tech and health is, in theory, a harmonious one. The more time and money we spend on developing ways in which our creations can help us maintain a clean bill of health, the more this will be possible. In addition to dividing opinion on whether Google Glass

The gadget is capable of providing a number of readouts to the wearer, informing them of various aspects of their body's functions. Stress levels, sleep pattern, heart rate and blood pressure fall under the wellness category; onset of fatigue, calorie intake and hydration under nutrition; and the activity monitor tells you how many steps you've taken in a given period, the kcal reading of your last workout, and the day's 'onyour-feet-mileage' in distance and hours. All of which may sound a little over the top, but given Britain's notoriously unhealthy lifestyle, and the difference even just a few changes can make, we'd say devices like this could definitely help people make informed choices on what needs to be altered in order to stay in tip-top condition.

Fitness Training For Busy Lives miss out. At least three times a week, slot 20 minutes in your busy life for a selection of these fast workouts. Interval training sessions: This is a good workout for your heart and stamina. Pick an aerobic activity - such as running, cycling, swimming or even skipping. Rather than stick at the same pace for 20 minutes, try alternating between sprinting or an all-out effort for one minute and then slowing down until you get your breath back and then speeding up again. Follow a five-minute cool down and stretch.

N

ot everyone can find time to sign up to the gym for three full-on cardio sessions every week. We show you how to fit exercise into a busy lifestyle. It's all very well for fitness trainers to recommend three full-on cardio sessions plus toning and strengthening exercises every week, but not everyone can find time for all that. As you may well know, it is all too easy to sign up for gym membership but it is not that easy to fit regular exercise into a busy lifestyle. Physical activity combined with a healthy diet keeps you looking good and, more importantly, is the best prevention you can get against obesity and many major health problems. The fact is, your health should always be your priority but this doesn't mean that you have to spend hours gruelling away at the gym to make it number one. Gym member or not, you can always find the time for exercise, if you set realistic goals. If you have a busy lifestyle but want to workout, aim for a more sustainable routine. The intention to spend an hourand-a-half in the gym after work is only worthwhile if you can achieve that. Start by increasing your daily activity levels: walk to and from the station, get off the bus a stop early, walk the kids to school and back or take the stairs instead of the lift to your office. This is a start, but you can do better than that. The time that you might spend watching Coronation Street or the first half of The Bill can be put to much better use - you can even workout while you are watching them so you don't

Circuit session: This is a good total toning and cardio workout. Choose five or six toning exercises - such as the squats, lunges, hamstring curls, push-ups and pectoral squeezes - and perform 10 repetitions of each exercise one after the other, without resting. Repeat this up to four times and you'll have completed a great fat-burning session by keeping your heart rate up and also incorporating resistance exercises. Follow a five-minute cool down and stretch. Gym body part workout: This will help strengthen or reshape problem areas of your body. In just 20 minutes you could perform three sets for three or four targeted exercises using gym equipment. Follow with targeted stretches. A good weekly routine would include targeted body part workouts in between cardio sessions. Stretching: This helps re-balance your body, improve flexibility and lengthen and tone your muscles. If you are unsure of how to correctly stretch, speak to a personal trainer in order to avoid injury. Relaxation: Busy lifestyles mean stressful ones, so part of your short exercise sessions should focus on balancing the mind and easing muscle tension. Lie on the floor with your palms face up. Close your eyes and breathe deeply through your diaphragm. Allow your lungs and diaphragm to fill as much as possible, counting in for four, and then slowly exhale, counting out for five. You can also relax muscle tension. Start at your toes and clench then relax them, move to your calves and clench and relax and slowly use this technique for all of your body parts to help relax tight muscles.

in a £3,720 limited-edition Omega Seamaster Diver 300M with Luxe Watches

Luxe Watches is celebrating the return of Bond in 2019 by launching a competition to win a limited edition £3,720 Omega Seamaster watch To celebrate the imminent return of James Bond in 2019, Luxe Watches are hosting a competition that will give one lucky winner the chance to receive a limited-edition Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Commander’s Watch.

Omega Seamaster to enter Luxe Watches’ Christmas giveaway to bag themselves a piece of Bond history. The competition runs from October 15th to December 15th, and the winner will be announced the following week. To be in with a chance of winning a limited-edition Omega Seamaster Diver 300M with Luxe Watches, hopefuls must fill out the company’s quick entry form at www.luxewatches. co.uk/competition/

This limited-edition watch was originally produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary Bond film, You Only Live Twice. Gadgets are of course a key part of the Bond mystery, which is why the Seamaster Diver 300M Commander’s Watch attracted so much attention. The watch reflects all things British, and is designed as a stylish salute to the Royal Navy and inspired by the legendary superspy Bond. It has a distinctive red, white and blue colour scheme, with a chunky dial and traditional strap that is inspired by Bond’s rank and regalia. The case is made from stainless steel with a polished, white ceramic dial. The finer details bring the watch to life, such as the striking 007 motif in brilliant red that acts as a counterpoint to the second hand, and a Liquidmetal diving scale to demonstrate the 300M it can be used in. The intricate design of the watch showcases the stylish Omega Calibre 2507 mechanism. The Commander’s Watch logo is inscribed in capitals, along with the number of the edition, on the clear stainless-steel back rim. Just 7,007 watches were produced to mark this celebratory release, retailing at £3,720 each. The 25th instalment of James Bond is set to return in November 2019, with the plot and its key characters being kept tightly under wraps. The good news for Bond fans, however, is that according to sources, shooting for the next film is due to start early 2018. Daniel Craig has confirmed that he will be filling the role of Bond again. If he completes the film, he will be the longest running Bond since Sean Connery. Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who first got involved with the franchise in The World is Not Enough in 1999, are working on the new script. The director is yet to be announced, but the bookies’ favourite is Christopher Nolan, who directed the hugely successful Dunkirk this year. Those feeling nostalgic for the next Bond film are encouraged living Local | 33

Newcastle United

It’s all there in clear black and white Newcastle United head into the winter months in a position few expected after a difficult start to the season. Three defeats and a limited summer transfer window lead to doom on Tyneside which probably surprised the manager and a few of the players after the highs of last season. This club and this support have seen this story too many times before though.

Broken promises and broken visions. A lack of ambition is one thing, a deliberate lack of transparency is another. The team rallied to three wins and draw in five games. The fixtures have been kind but the performances solid. This team can defend, a rarity in the modern Premier League. It can also attack. West Ham and Stoke were lucky to concede what they did as chances were missed. Overall there’s a sense of trust between fans and team. I severely doubt we’ll see this side humiliated as they were too often under previous managers in this division, under Mike Ashley. Jamal Lascelles is just 23 years old. What were you doing at 23? Few people get the chance to captain a Premier League football club, even fewer manage it with the grace and dignity of our young leader. He’s not the best defender I’ve ever seen at NUFC but certainly one of my favourite. Fast wingers with end product who play regularly in the Premier League go for around £20 million these days, at a low level. Christian Atsu cost £6m. He couldn’t get in the team most of last season when we were playing second division football. He’s now one of the first names on the team sheet. Footballer’s improve under the guidance of Rafa Benitez. They used to get worse when they arrived at NUFC. All is not well however. Mike Ashley’s relentless PR ‘machine’ is telling the media that three parties have signed None Disclosure Agreements with another group interested. They’re also saying that as a result, Mike Ashley has ‘lowered’ the price’. I must remember that when selling my next car, the more people that want to buy it, I’ll need to start lowering the price, right? Whatever truth there is in these takeover stories, rest assured that things won’t be easy and that Mike Ashley will be the winner of any sale of the club. That’s when the incriminations of a disastrous tenure start to reveal themselves. Whether that happens or it doesn’t, Newcastle United fans have a team that tries and has proved it will be competitive in this league. We’ve a world class manager and a good set of talented young lads doing their best for us. It hasn’t always been like that. Alex Hurst, Editor of TrueFaith www.true-faith.co.uk

Newcastle Falcons

Images courtesy of Chris Lishman

The fortunes of the region’s only Premiership rugby team, Newcastle Falcons, continue to rise after a strong start to the season on and off the field. Average crowds at the Kingston Park club are up significantly on last season and the team have played their part, the first block of six league games seeing four Falcons victories and a four-try bonus point away to reigning champions, Exeter Chiefs. The Falcons’ only ‘home’ loss during that period came against European champions Saracens, a match which was moved to the American city of Philadelphia as part of the Premiership’s ongoing drive for increased global awareness. Beginning the league campaign with a thumping 35-8 victory over Worcester Warriors, the Falcons were forced to grind it out in their second encounter when a rain-soaked night in Manchester saw a late surge delivering a 13-12 win at Sale Sharks. Defeat to Saracens in round three was followed up by a thrilling 33-32 triumph at Bath in which Newcastle secured 36|living Local

another four-try bonus point, director of rugby Dean Richards’ side much more convincing in dishing out a 29-17 defeat of newly-promoted London Irish in round five. Champions Exeter were victorious in Devon as the opening block of league matches came to a close, the Falcons taking a bonus point as consolation before entering a month which saw their European Challenge Cup campaign get off to a winning start. Again, there were points aplenty as the Kingston Park outfit ran out 32-27 winners against Welsh visitors, Dragons, their Cup route taking them to French side Bordeaux-Begles before returning to league action in front of a season-high home crowd against Leicester Tigers on October 29. The Falcons’ upturn in fortunes might have caught some on the outside by surprise, but for those in the know it is reward for the shrewd incremental improvements made to the squad by Richards, who is in his seventh season with the club. Having retained a core of homegrown players, captained by long-time club man and fully-fledged Geordie Will Welch, Newcastle have added proven international class with the likes of returning fly-half Toby Flood, French great Maxime Mermoz and Canada captain DTH van der Merwe. Fijian flyer Vereniki Goneva remains among the most lethal finishers in the division, but it is not just on the field where the club are showing ambition.

Newcastle Falcons A planning application has been lodged with Newcastle City Council for a substantial development to Kingston Park Stadium which would see the capacity rising from 10,200 to 11,730, with additional seating, hospitality space, meeting rooms, changing rooms, medical and fitness facilities. A new community pitch is part of an application which would see local schools, clubs and university teams able to train and play at the home of the Falcons, who face an exciting run of home games over the next two months. Their run of Kingston Park clashes begins with the AngloWelsh Cup visit of Cardiff Blues on Saturday November 11, before Gloucester provide the Friday night opposition on November 24. The return of European action sees BordeauxBegles visiting the North East in front of the BT Sport cameras on December 9, while there will be a sizeable crowd in attendance for the festive fixture against Harlequins on Saturday December 23. Featuring prominently on many Christmas lists is the club’s new European kit, which sees a return to their traditional Gosforth colours of green and white hoops in the year of the club’s 140th anniversary.

NEWCASTLE FALCONS’ UPCOMING HOME GAMES Saturday November 11 v Cardiff Blues (5pm) Friday November 24 v Gloucester (7.45pm) Saturday December 9 v Bordeaux-Begles (3.15pm) Saturday December 23 v Harlequins (3pm)

And with Newcastle’s St James’ Park set to host the European Champions Cup and Challenge Cup finals in May 2019, it is not hard to see the drums of North East rugby are beginning to play a louder beat.

Food

Goose breast with goose leg sausage roll, kale and cranberry relish

T

he underrated goose makes a luxurious centrepiece to a Christmas Day roast, and with a skilfully prepared bird and served with some suitably classy accompaniments. The goose sausage roll is a particular highlight - guaranteed to provide a talking point at the table. A good butcher should be happy to provide the specific elements, such as minced leg meat.

1 2

To begin, soak the dried cranberries in the port. Cover and leave for 12-24 hours

To prepare the goose leg sausage rolls, mix the goose and pork mince together, then add the chopped herbs and season with the allspice, salt and pepper

3

Place a large piece of cling film on the work surface and lay the mince along the middle. Roll into a long ballotine, approximately 4cm in diameter, then tie off the ends and place in the fridge to firm up. Once the mix is chilled, carefully remove the cling film and place onto a piece of puff pastry large enough to wrap around the filling

4

Roll the pastry tightly around the sausage and goose mix, ensuring you brush the inside edge with egg yolk before sealing. Rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes

5 6

For the cranberry relish, add all of the ingredients to a medium-sized saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer

transfer the bones to a saucepan

9

Place the roasting tray over a medium heat, add approximately 250ml of chicken stock and deglaze, ensuring you remove all of the caramelised pieces and sediment that has stuck to the base of the tray. Transfer the liquid and sediment to the saucepan with the bones

10

Add more chicken stock to the pan and simmer to reduce. Make sure you keep tasting the gravy as it reduces until it reaches a nice, intense flavour

11

Add the garlic and thyme and continue simmering to infuse, once again tasting until it reaches the desired strength of flavour. Pass through a fine strainer into a clean saucepan. Combine the butter and flour to form a paste (beurre manie). Whisk in half of the paste and simmer to thicken Add more of the paste if more thickening is required. Season to taste with salt and pepper and pass through a fine strainer. Set aside

Cook for approximately 20 minutes until the fresh cranberries have broken down and the port has reduced down to make a thick sauce. Remove from the heat, allow to cool and refrigerate until required

12

7 8

13 14

Preheat the oven to 180ËšC/gas mark 4

Place the goose bones and offcuts on a roasting tray and into the oven. Roast until dark and golden in colour, for approximately 45-60 minutes. Remove from the oven and 46|living Local

Preheat the oven to 175ËšC/gas mark 3.5

Remove the sausage roll from the fridge, brush all over with the remaining egg yolk and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and cooked through

Goose breast 2 goose breasts 25g of unsalted butter 1 tsp table salt black pepper, freshly ground Goose sausage roll 500g of pork mince 500g of goose leg, minced 25g of parsley, chopped 25g of marjoram, chopped 25g of sage, chopped 1/2 tsp allspice 1 tsp table salt black pepper, freshly ground 1 sheet of puff pastry, all butter 1 egg yolk

15

Meanwhile, use a sharpe knife to score the goose fat/ skin on each breast and season well with salt and pepper. Place a large pan over a low-medium heat and cook the breasts slowly, skin-side down. This will help render down the fat so the skin turns golden and crispy

16

Check the skin every 2 minutes and once golden brown and crispy, turn the breasts over, adding the butter and spooning over the breasts to baste. Cook for a couple more minutes, or as desired - ideally the goose should be medium rare and pink in the middle. Remove from the pan and leave to rest for 10 minutes in a warm place

Goose gravy 1000ml of chicken stock 2 garlic cloves, bruised 2 sprigs of fresh thyme 40g of butter, softened 2 tbsp of flour 1/2 tsp table salt pepper Cranberry relish 100g of cranberries, fresh 100g of cranberry sauce 100g of dried cranberries 100ml of port Kale 500g of curly kale 40g of butter table salt black pepper, freshly ground

While the goose is resting, remove the stalks and any thick stems from the kale and wash thoroughly. Cook in a large pan of boiling salted water until al dente, for approximately 3-4 minutes. Drain, toss in butter and season with salt and a good grind of pepper Before serving, slice the goose sausage roll into 6 even portions and reheat, if necessary. Reheat the gravy until warmed through

19

Using a sharp knife, carve the goose breasts, allowing 4 slices per portion. Add the slices to hot plates and add the hot sausage roll, kale and some cranberry relish. Drizzle with the hot gravy and serve immediately
