EDITOR’S NOTE

What Women Want (Women’s Day special)

I

decided to write this month’s editorial note on the theme of this issue: Women’s Day. So I started by randomly asking a few female friends if they remember what they did the last couple of years on March 8th. Standard answer- No specific recollection. (Note: I didn’t mention the relevance of March 8th) I started looking back to reference my first few memories of Women’s Day. I went back to my childhood and I don’t remember any such specific day. Neither in school or college. Maybe sometime back when social media made sure that no one missed these dates. The question that came to my mind- are we celebrating Women’s day or celebrating Women. As per my understanding the latter does not need a day. I was raised by a woman (my mother) whom I celebrate everyday. Grew alongside my sister who had a poster in the room that read “Anything boys can do... girls can do better”. I celebrate her and a lot of other women everyday in some way or another. So what’s the relevance of Women’s Day really? Digging deep I found it started somewhere around 1909 as a remembrance to some women’s workers union strike. Over the years it is essentially marked as a celebration of Women’s economic, political, social and cultural achievements. While we have a specific date in a year marked for specific days, it’s important for us to remember their significance beyond just a social media reference. Women today, all over the world, have achieved the greatest heights. I had decided to dedicate an article

Editor-in-chief

Anubhav Anand @anubhavanand

every month in our magazine called #WhatWomenWant (see inside) simply to highlight these very achievements that should be celebrated all the time. I always go back to my mother for the best advice or feedback and I did for this very subject as well. I asked her- “What is it that Women Want?” Her reply, “At the most basic level... the same thing as what Men WantRespect & Love! Rest all follows.” On that note Love & Respect to all the Women and Men and wishing everyone the highest achievements and celebrations in life.

Functional Training vs Traditional Training Functional training, if performed correctly, leads to better joint mobility and stability, as well as more efficient motor patterns. Improving these factors decreases the potential for an injury sustained during an athletic endeavor. The benefits may arise from the use of training that emphasizes the body’s natural ability to move in six degrees of freedom. In comparison, while machines may appear to be safer to use, they restrict body movements to a single plane of motion, which is an unnatural form of movement for the body and may potentially lead to faulty movement patters or injury.

Calisthenics At MultiFit, learn how to build up core strength and body mobility using bodyweight exercises with progressions for skills like muscle ups, pull ups, pushups, human flag, planche etc.

EXPERTSPEAK Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Siddhi Chavan, known for her anti-aging skills and expertise in skin care in Mumbai, answers some frequently asked questions

Hi. I’m 25 years old. How do I get rid of my open pores. I’ve recently started working which involves travelling. How do I take care of my skin? Shifa, Mumbai

I’m getting a lot of ingrowths on my legs, which is leaving behind bad marks. Will laser hair reduction help. How safe is it? Pallavi, Pune

Hi Shifa. Thanks for writing in. There is no permanent way to get rid of open pores, although their appearance can be minimised. Use a pore minimiser such as Hysaec Mat by Uriage in the daytime. Follow it up with a non comedogenic sunscreen. In the night you can use a mild retinol based cream. Certain procedures such as laser toning help in minimizing the appearance of the pores. Also mesotherapy or microbotox help.

Hi Pallavi. Laser hair reduction is a good solution to reduce hair ingrowths. It takes about 6-8 sessions to see good results which is usually done once in 4-6 weeks depending upon your growth. With every session the thickness and density of the hair will reduce. This will also help reduce the ingrowths and thus the marks caused by it. Till then you can use a glycolic acid or kojic acid based cream to lighten the marks. Laser hair reduction is absolutely safe and FDA approved for the same. Also with newer technology, the procedure is almost painless.

For a good skin care routine use a gentle cleanser to wash your face. Since your work involves a lot of travel, make sure to use a broad spectrum, sweat proof sunscreen daily. Repeat it every 3 hours. Chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser toning/ carbon facial are some procedures to help reduce daily damage and maintain your skin.

tattoo come off completely? Anjali, Mumbai Tattoo removal involves use of a laser to break the pigment which is cleared away by the body. Different colours are treated with different wavelengths of the laser. The black colour responds best to treatment. The result will depend on whether the tattoo is done by an amateur or a professional and what colours are used. The number of sessions will depend on the colours, size and age of the tattoo. Also the colour of your skin and depth of the tattoo pigment affect the results of the procedure. The procedure is relatively safe but there is a chance that some colours may be effectively removed than the others.

Got a question about your skin and didn’t know whom to ask? Please write in to mumbai@sakhiyaskinclinic.com and Dr. Siddhi Chavan would be happy to answer your queries.

#WHATWOMENWANT We support stories that will redefine our future. A powerful take on positive initiatives specific to women within Mumbai.

Home Entrepreneurs

THE NEW WAVE BY POOJA KOCHAR

#WhatWomenWant believes in weaving an efficient support system for women who want to dream big and follow their passion. This Women’s Day issue is dedicated to the women of Mumbai who are scoring on every front - balancing home, work and ambition with a commendable level of commitment and agility. Thank you for never giving up. The more open you are to ideas and conversations, the easier it gets for you to get a hold of success. A woman working from home is not uncommon but we have noticed a lot of game changers are pushing their boundaries and taking bigger risks. A simple idea, if well executed could result in an impressive growth trajectory. We met a few home entrepreneurs in our city and learnt about their inspiration and thought process towards having a lean working structure based out of the comfort of their homes.

Jeeta Shah Kothari

runs successful kids clothesline, ‘Jeeta Petit’ from her workshop based out of her house. She manages production and designing with a lean working style and invests actively on online sales, exhibitions and trade shows. “Working from home gives me the flexibility to manage my home as well as my passion. My work is my identity; it gives me the right focus to achieve my goals. I have never thought of how big or small it seems as long as it keeps me going. I plan well in advance and the digital wave provides an extra push to my sales without the burden of investing in flashy stores and window displays”.

Ritu Parashar started her baking classes ‘Muaah’

over a decade back. Her marketing was simple- grow by word of mouth. “Working from home made me feel more in control as my business was seasonal. It was very busy during festive seasons and I thought working from home helped me balance out on my risks. My kitchen counter is the most effective business set-up for me. I am now exploring YouTube to reach out to more clients”. Taking calculative risks is a big part of decision making for every entrepreneur. With so many home chefs, food entrepreneurship has been one of the fastest growing trends in this space.

Pooja Shenava Tiwari

is a licensed Zumba instructor and is running her own fitness Zumba workshops from home. “I converted one of my rooms into a studio set-up and changed the decor by adding dynamic mirrors and investing in a good music system. I was always passionate about dancing and Zumba was the right mix of dance and fitness. Most of my clients are housewives who want to do something interesting and stay fit. I think they feel much more comfortable in my set-up as compared to a gym. Initially I worried about starting small but eventually I realized this humble beginning gave me enough time to experiment without the burden of heavy rentals.

Smart Growth Hacks for Home Entrepreneurs Keep learning new skills The fact that you work from home might seem restrictive because you spend lot of time alone hustling for your business but try using this alone time and make a point to get out and learn a new skill. This will also help you to network and talk about your services to like-minded people and net grow your business circle.

Financial backing Government has introduced various small loan facilities under the digital India campaign, a lot of private players also offer micro financing schemes for women entrepreneurs, invest some time in proper research incase you are looking for expansion. Also, every woman must do some selfish savings, a savings that she can build monthly and use in the future the way she would want.

Use Social media to your advantage Social media tools are extremely cost effective and focused, you will be amazed at how many leads can me materialized with the right content and images. Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn are the new market place. They have various features to help you increase your reach. Building a simple website and showcasing your products and services helps you add credibility and share regular information, schemes and discounts. If you have an idea in mind, no matter how small it seems don’t get hassled about failing. Start small and grow at your own pace, your inner GPS will guide you the right way. There is no perfect time to start, go ahead take the plunge and the rest will fall into place. Think Big, Act Smart! March 2017 | Volume 2 Issue 12 | Living Local Mumbai 17

THE CITY OF DREAMS BY SRIKANTH NANDAKUMAR

I

’ve been in Mumbai for past 7 years. Mumbai has been amazing till now. It has treated me well, not nicely but how I wanted a city to treat me. It has given me days to cry and days to die for, from the hectic days in local trains to fun, stable and tension free time at beaches. I feel lucky, I live in this city. The life is fast, there is a lot of pollution out there and it feels uncomfortable at times but Mumbai has something which drives me and keeps me going. Like your first love, you cannot be detached from it

standing on some building’s terrace and I don’t know why and how, but it feels magical. The monsoons in Mumbai is something to die for, although there are heavy rains which cause a lot of trouble on the roads but there are little moments when you feel good. It can be as small as being in a traffic jam, relaxing and leaning back on the seat of your Taxi with the windows half open feeling the cool breeze and water droplets touching your body and some nice song playing in your earphones. Moments like these are remembered for years, because that See, this is why Mumbai is amazing. You never have is when you to worry about getting lost in this city. O

n a balmy Saturday in February, the 18th of February to be precise, a few women stalwarts from various walks of life got together to discuss the one thing that binds them together. The city of Mumbai- the place they, grudgingly and sometimes with gay abandon, call home. But that wasn’t the only thing bringing them together. They were to chat, share and discuss ideas about Bombay-waali- the quintessential Bombay girl- who is she and what’s she like. Has Mumbai changed over time? Is it still safe for women? Everything was up for debate and conversation and what a conversation it was. Behind these power-packed panelists was a name showing them support and serving as a platform for women around the country- SheThePeopleTV. This organization is the brainchild of

Shaili Chopra, a woman with many credentials to her name. Shaili wears a lot of hats. She’s an award-winning journalist, an entrepreneur, an author, a columnist and more. One of the first panel discussions was about Bollywood. How the Indian Film Industry tends to avoid commenting on topics that are sensitive. People in the industry applaud Meryl Streep for her approach and stand but shy away from being this vocal in their own country. Of course, this was a dichotomy, the panel discussed. “Some people in the movie industry only talk about it when there’s a movie releasing”, says Devita Saraf. Another panel discussion, which had Elsa D Silva play moderator, talked about Mumbai as a city and what it stands for. Much of the discussion

revolved around the youth and their apathy towards causes. Ruben Mascarenhas, who is an active participant to bring the people involved in the Keenan and Reuben case to justice, mentioned that he doesn’t believe the youth is aloof; just that they don’t believe any tangible change will come through. A discussion by Meghna Pant, Sharin Bhatti, Shikha Makhan and Supriya Nair touched upon the essence of the event. Whether the city truly and in today’s day still belongs to the Bombaywaali. The opinions were mixed and varied. Up for debate was the judgment pass on single women to having sex in the city. And this made for an extremely fun albeit sometimes volatile evening.

Living Local caught up with Shaili Chopra about her venture, the thought behind it and more. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Tell us about SheThePeople and how it came about. Shaili: SheThePeople really came about to increase the number of women we call role models. I am a strong believer that you can’t have 10 women represent a population of half a billion women as the only role models in a country like ours. A country that is now more and more focusing on opportunities, diversity as well as putting more women into the workplace so that they can contribute. I have also always felt that India lacked a multi-genre platform to quench the intellectual thirst of any woman who was on her learning curve and that’s the space that SheThePeople TV is trying to fill.

From the entrepreneur to the nanny, SheThePeople is quite diverse. We have always believed women are great at more than one thing. They are great at multiple things and there is a

need for us to bring together people from all walks of life at common places and find new ground of conversation, discourse and plans for the future.

Women’s Day is coming up and the conversation is all about women. How do think this conversation buzz can be sustained? You know, there are two parts to it. I am a believer in the idea of women’s day, women’s month or any celebration of women. Because the numbers are so skewed, it’s important to put the spotlight on women’s issues and women. They remain the lesser voice. On the other hand, I also think that companies need to go beyond pink balloons and their song and dance about Women’s Day. And be actually committed to push to have a more equal society with equal opportunities for women.

What do you think are the most pressing issues women are facing right now? I would pick just three - equal pay for equal work, at least one woman in each panel discussion, (panels should have the voice of women) and third, companies should shut the diversity department and every department should be diverse. If any of these things start happening, I think we would have moved the needle quite a bit.

What does Bombaywaali mean to you? For me, every city is built by its men and women and I thought one needed to have a Bombaywaali in city like Mumbai because its one city that has always given women that fearless and free voice and the ability to be themselves. For me Bombaywaali is truly that- fearless and fierce.

It also has priceless artifacts and over 3,000 ancient manuscripts in Persian, Sanskrit and Prakrit, mostly on paper but some on palm leaf. A Purrrfect Café

CAT CAFÉ STUDIO Are you into Cats? If yes, there is a place you need to head right now. If not, you might just change your mind once you visit this newly renovated Cat Café Studio. If you are wondering what is a Cat Café, it’s because it’s a new and one of its kind concept in India. At the helm of it is Mriidu Khosla, who has been a cat-lover as far back as she can remember. We caught up with her to get a little more insight on this unique café.

Tell us about the concept behind Cat Café Studio. The idea behind Cat Café Studio was to essentially to get more and more cats adopted into loving homes! We are running the Creative Agency, Zcyphher, since 2010 and ever since its inception we were into rescuing cats albeit privately and on a small scale. We were trying to get our rescues adopted through our immediate friends and family circle, which got saturated pretty quickly. That’s when we realized if we were going to do this properly we need to open it up to the public and get more and more people aware about cats and about how awesome pets they really are! That is how Cat Café Studio was born in early 2015 and so far we have managed to get over 300 cats adopted.

What made you start the same? As far back as we remember, we were always into cats! Over the years the team grew and we attracted like-minded people. We were already taking care of cats in our small studio space and working hard on getting them adopted. So, the cat café was just waiting to happen. :)

How is it different from other pet NGOs? Animal NGOs essentially do the same thing that we are doing to help our stray animals so wouldn’t like to compare. How we are different is that we are professional café too and we are always encouraging more and more people to come here and visit our cats and also

30

March 2017 | Volume 2 Issue 12 | Living Local Mumbai

work (we provide free Wi-Fi), bring your dogs (our outside café area is pet friendly), socialize, perform (we regularly invite artists from across the city to come perform here), share and learn together. Ours is an active and thriving animal lover community united by a common cause- the betterment of stray cats. The youngest Cat that you have rescued. The youngest would be this 2-day old newborn kitten we came across stranded on the street. We travelled all the way to Vasai to take her to a lactating mother but unfortunately the kitten didn’t take well to the new mother and passed away few days later.

The oldest cat that you have rescued. The oldest cat we rescued so far will have to be Clint Eastwood (6-7 years) who is currently the Boss at the new cat café. He’s a beautiful alpha male cat who we are sure will get adopted soon. He’s close to Clementine here, so we hope they both get adopted together. (she smiles)

How many cats are there at a given time in the Cat Café Studio? At any given time there are above 25 cats at the cat café for people to interact and socialize with.

Once the cats are rescued what all is done for their well being at your studio? First and foremost, we address to his/ her health as most of the times the kitten/ cat are suffering from a host of different ailments. Next we get them used to

the whole food, water and sandpit routine as all the cats here are well domesticated, this is important as they all have to eventually get adopted. Then we introduce them to the main cat café area with all the other cats when they are ready. We perform regular vet visits, vaccinations, sterilizations, etc. for all our cats to ensure they are in good health when they get adopted and even after. We are probably the toughest place to adopt from since we treat all our cats as our children and we want to give them into homes which would treat them in the same way as well.

What would you say is the draw for people to come and spend time with these furry animals? They are cats! They are the biggest draw. People who have interacted with a cat even once know what we’re talking about. For those who still haven’t experienced cats, they are the most amazing creatures ever created. No wonder they worshipped at one point in history! Also, it’s a pet-friendly co-working space with a professional café for meetings, etc. Many say it’s a therapeutic experience coming here,

come visit to see for yourself..

Any ground rules to be followed at the cat café? Yes. We have some standard house rules that visitors are made aware of the first time they come. Firstly, all visitors need to sanitize their hands before petting any cat. You cannot wake up a sleeping cat, no picking them up forcibly or pulling their tails, whiskers, etc. No outside food (human or feline) is to be fed to the cats, as their diet is very important. Other rules include no flash photography, loud noises or disturbing the cats when they are eating. Children need to be accompanied by an adult to supervise.

What food is there on the Menu at the Cat Café? Any specialties? - We serve all types of coffees, teas (hot and cold), variety of beverages including milkshakes, sandwiches, cakes, muffins, bagels etc. We are serving popsicles too right now. We will keep reworking our menu based on what people like and we are always open to feedback from our visitors. Tell us something peculiar about Cats

that makes them so adorable? Their purring! Purring is the sound they make when they are content. The vibrations that they produce when they are purring have absolutely magical abilities. It is scientifically proven to possess healing powers.

What is the adoption procedure? We always recommend all potential adopters to first come meet all the cats in person and spend time with them. We advise people to take as much time as it is required to be sure of which cats they want to adopt and let the cats choose you instead as it is a serious commitment for 12-14 years. It is better to adopt this way rather than choosing based on their size, age, color, etc. as all cats have a unique personality. Once they are sure we ensure the house is cat proof and all the house members are in agreement for this decision. They are given a cat adoption manual, which has all the details regarding cat care, which they need to study. Then they are taken to our three rounds of interviews and if everything works out, we proceed with the cats’ adoption in a forever home!

Nurturing Bonds through Nature

‘HEART & SOIL’ Here is an example of how when passion and hobbies come together, beautiful things can happen. Neha is one such Mumbaikar who took a sabbatical from her Media background to go after her love for nature and animals. She believes it’s an extension of the same love that her parents and late grandfather extended to stray animals and birds or the plants that they tended to. Growing up with great childhood memories of the outdoor nature, Neha took to trekking and traveling which became an integral part of her life. We caught up with Neha to get an insight on her venture Heart & Soil.

Q. A.

What was the reason behind starting Heart & Soil?

When I become a Mother & I saw my son growing up without much exposure to NATURE, I strongly felt the need to expose him to the outdoors early in life. I was looking at an opportunity to spend time with my child in Nature & naturally evoking his interest coupled with fun & learning. That led me to start ‘Heart & soil’. ‘Heart & Soil’ provides an opportunity for Parents & children to connect with Nature thus nurturing their relationship in a flourishing environment, which is critical in current times especially in a city like Mumbai (Lack of Green Spaces & time).

32

March 2017 | Volume 2 Issue 12 | Living Local Mumbai

Q.

What are the activities divided around in Heart & Soil?

A.

The Span of Activities conducted is divided around Nature, Adventure, and Wildlife & Culture/Life skills. In the Past 1.5yrs we have done Nature Trails, Workshops, Farm visits, Rappling, Kayaking, Sailing, Camping, village day-outs, star gazing etc.

Q.

How do these activities benefit the

kids?

A.

Heart & Soil Events are designed with the Objective of ‘Nurturing bonds through nature’. Parents & kids spend quality time together in nature doing varied activities. When Kids see their parents & other likeminded families doing different activities they are naturally inclined towards being a part of it. They have fun, learn & get exposed to the gift which Nature has to offer. Eg: My youngest Camper is 1 year old & I have kids as young as 2.5yrs on my nature trails. These Young kids surprise me every time & I realise that they are a Natural at all Nature driven activities & it’s all about the exposure.

Q.

What are the indirect or direct benefits that the parents get out of this?

A.

Heart& Soil is a nature cum activity club for parents who want their children to discover the simple joys of being friends with nature. The added attraction here is for the parent to be a part of this great adventure with their child, thus cementing life long memories even as they rediscover the child within. “Heart & Soil gives a chance to discover the stress-free parent hiding within you. A chance for your kid to explore the great outdoors with someone he really trusts. Re-kindle the love you feel toward your child but are sometimes unable to give shape to.

Q. A

What is the next step in this endeavor?

Heart & Soil would be soon starting Longer Travel Experiences like Wild life Safaris, Backpacking, etc. along with some more regular experiences, which the interested parents can avail as per their convenience & wait for events to happen.

THE CITY STORY

A DESSERT LOVER’S GUIDE TO SEVEN DAYS OF SWEETNESS IN

MUMBAI BY ROSHNI VATNANI

I have long since suspected that a sugar rush is significantly better than an adrenaline rush. Admittedly, this epiphany arrived after zero attempts at an adrenaline rush so the data is possibly skewed. Still, I have eaten dessert every single day of the week while actively avoiding bungee jumping and skydiving. So here is a handy dandy guide to seven Mumbai days of sweetness and no running with the bulls.

Banana Leaf, 7 Bungalows, Andheri West for Post-Lunch Sunday Come here for the dosa, stay for the payasam. Served warm in a tiny silver bowl, accompanied with a side order of filter coffee, the texture is dreamy and a little bit nutty. It may be the best way to contemplate Sunday anxiety and whether people who use cutlery to eat their dosas are the real monsters we should be afraid of. Banana Leaf, Ground Floor, Shubham CHS, Juhu Versova Link Road, 7 Bungalows, Andheri (w), Mumbai 400 057. Phone: 022 2628 9090 Sweetish House Mafia, Bandra for Just Before Midnight on

Monday Cookies are really the

perfect dessert – their size making it acceptable to eat your way through a box with minimal regret. Sweetish House Mafia’s cookies have simple flavours, crusty edges, soft centers and chocolate chips melting into your hands. They’re not overly buttery and barely hold it together when heated (but then, who does, really?). Buy the cookie slab for when you want to eat like no one is watching. Sweetish House Mafia, 14B, Silver Sands Building, Bandra (w), Mumbai 400 050. Phone: 022 2498 8740

Sangeeta Mithai, Pedder Road for Mid-Day Tuesday Snack Sangeeta’s is an institution. Every time I have driven through town, I have come back with more than a few boxes

of peda from Sangeeta’s. Their hue, somewhere between soaked saffron and custard, is impossibly warm, fuzzy and irresistible. The taste is familial – we have it often – and always during teatime because calories don’t count during tea. Sangeeta Sweets, Shop 26, Vellard View, Peddar Road, Mumbai 400 026.

Muffins at Bombay Baking Co, JW Marriott, Juhu for Hump Day Breakfast Meeting Coffee is the only reason to wake up in the morning but the muffins at Bombay Baking Co are wonderfully old school and make a nice accompaniment. The ratios are just right –enough cake to conceal the fruit and enough fruit to conceal the nutrition. I mean, what is bran and why would it be in my muffin? I love the golden, gleaming crumb that conceals a plum muffin top. I

buy the blueberry muffin and a pot of French Press and wonder how I’d do as Gilmore Girl. Bombay Baking Company, JW Marriot, Juhu Tara Road, Mumbai 400 049.

Chocolate Praline Cake, Ellipsis Bakery, Bandra for Everything Sucks Thursday Sometimes, the week goes on for too long and my distaste must be met with cake. Depending on the day, my tastes range from anything-will-do to must-have-flavour-and-unicorn-tears. This is somewhere in between. Praline and chocolate is a classic pairing that for a reason was suddenly passé. Now, Ellipsis Bakery is making it cool again and at 10 pm on a Thursday night, I am grateful. Ellipsis Bakery, Plot 29, 56 Hill Road, Next

to Bank of India, Bandra (w), Mumbai 400 050.

Raspberry Ripple, The Right Place, Warden Road for Casual Friday If I have made it through to Friday, I deserve ice cream. What’s more, I deserve it served in my car as I listen to Taylor Swift at a respectable volume. The Right Place on Warden Road is normally my go-to for sandwiches but they also do the best soft serves outside of McDonalds (If you are suddenly questioning my tastes in food, it’s a little too late). Their raspberry ripple is creamy with actual raspberry flavoring, too! The best part is that the guy behind the counter serves up two generous scoops for the price of one. Right Place, Shop No. 7, Building No. 63, Bhulabhai Desai Road, Mumbai 400 026. Phone: 022

2367 0885.

Pistachio Opera Cake, La Folie Lab, Bandra for Date Night

Saturday

Pistachios are exotic to some but to anyone who grew up with kheer loving family (and therefore has spent many days debating the humble pistachio’s place in kheer), it is anything but. At La Folie Lab, the ingredients are all dressed up – fine layers stacked with surgical precision, fresh raspberry cream in the middle, white chocolate vanilla cream on the top, adequate flavour in every bite. Very thrilling to me. La Folie Lab, Shop No.1, Libra Tower, 70, Hill Road, Bandra (w), Mumbai 400 050. Phone: 091679 37019.
