shefford Community fire station: by Nick Clements

Stay warm, and safe this winter, our top tips and advice.

S

hefford Community Fire Station is an Oncall station, one of eleven such stations within the county.

This means the firefighters who work there all have other jobs and respond to fire calls via an alerter that they carry with them during their designated cover periods, which will be activated by Fire Control as and when an emergency occurs. They then ‘turnout’ to the station, board the appliance (fire engine) and proceed to deal with whatever the incident may be. This summer was one of the busiest we’ve had at Shefford for a number of years, with crews attending a large number of field fires. These were mainly caused by a combination of the long, hot, dry spell we enjoyed and carelessly discarded sources of ignition, ranging from cigarettes to glass bottles – which focus the sun’s rays in the same way a magnifying glass would. As the seasons shift, so do the risks and as the fans and BBQ’s get put

Shefford are currently recruiting On-Call firefighters. More details on the role and criteria for applicants can be found at: away for the winter, the electric heaters come out, so just remember never to put them too close to curtains or other flammable materials, and certainly never use them to dry clothes on! The sun can still pose a risk as well – mirrors left on window sills can also focus the sun’s rays back onto window frames and curtains, causing avoidable house fires.

As well as fighting fires, Shefford is the base for Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s road safety team. Alongside their colleagues from the Prevention Team and Bedfordshire Police they are responsible for delivering education and training to road users across the county. These include young drivers and motorcyclists, with both groups being amongst the most ‘at risk’ categories of motorists nationwide. One ongoing initiative that is part of a larger, nationwide scheme is the BikerDown! course. These are aimed at motorcyclists of all ages and experience, and are held monthly at Shefford Fire Station. hen someone is having a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), every single second really does count. Knowing the exact location of your nearest Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can make all the difference between life and death.

Most public access AEDs are easy to use with voice guided instructions, meaning you can respond and provide immediate life saving treatment, before the ambulance service arrives. AEDs when used within the first 3-5 minutes of a person suffering a Sudden Cardiac Arrest can dramatically increase a victims chance of survival from less than 5% to as much as 70%. AEDs were designed to be used by virtually anyone with little or no training or experience.

education

our trip to woodlands pre-school In this months section on education, what better place to start than a fantastic visit to Woodlands Pre-School in Clifton. Greeted with a friendly welcome by staff and pupils we had a very enjoyable afternoon dedication to children’s early development at its heart. Charitable status means that all surplus funds are ploughed back into the continuous improvement of our facilities, equipment and expertise, enabling us to purchase new equipment, refresh the play and learning environment and ensure that we operate above government set staff ratios to help every child constantly learn to be as resilient, capable, confident and self-assured as possible.

W

oodlands pre-school nestles among the trees in its purposebuilt building and secure woodland outdoor environment on the school field behind Clifton All Saints Academy. The school has been on this site since September 2008, after being located in the Clifton church hall for over 30 years. Our ethos has always been to provide an atmosphere and culture of welcome and inclusivity where children can thrive and learn through play with the help and support of our highly qualified team of Early Years Practitioners. We are all very proud of our “Outstanding” Ofsted awards.

We aim to understand and support our children’s families and hope to have the support and understanding of each family, delivering a virtuous circle of ‘evidence based’ positive reinforcement for each and every one of our unique children. One aspect of Woodlands we are particularly proud of is our “Bluebirds Class” which we offer to children during the term before they start school. This initiative is set in a school classroom location but run by our own dedicated practitioners and staff helping the children make a smooth, secure and self-assured transition into full time education.

We are a registered charity overseen by a management committee with a diver- During “Bluebirds” we provide exsity of life experience and a variety of tended learning games and activities backgrounds in its membership and with such as rhyming, phonics and maths 12

that are appropriate for the experience we have had with each child. Although we undertake more group activities, children are still able to learn through free play activities with a variety of toys and resources that are different from pre-school. Children will by now also have a book bag to take home reading materials and home tasks. Our ‘show and tell’ time encourages children to bring in items that relate to the alphabet and numbers that the children learn each week.

A big thanks to the staff and pupils for welcoming us at Woodlands pre-school

Bluebirds is a brilliant way of preparing and supporting children for the transition to school. Children become used to the school sounds and sights and begin to engage in learning that will continue into reception class including stage 1 and stage 2 phonics, while still maintained and nurtured in the comfort and security of their existing relationships with our team. by The Woodlands Team

health

P

hysiotherapists work with a wider population of people than some might think. Often associated with sports injuries and bad backs, there are numerous areas of the profession which are less well known. Neurological Physiotherapy focuses on those conditions of the central nervous system - the brain and spinal cord. Treating conditions such as Stroke, Head Injuries, Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis requires a different approach to that of someone experiencing smptoms from a different issue. Neurological conditions vary considerably, and it is unlikely you will ever see the exact same symptoms from one individual to the next. Knowing how some conditions may change over time is important in helping to manage them effectively.

“Around 1 in 6 men and 1 in 5 women will have a stroke in their lifetime” Management from your GP as well as experienced Health Care Professionals in treating symptoms can help maximise individuals quality of life. The nervous system is complex and controls everything from movement, sensation, speech and our ability to think. It is what makes us who we are and how we

14

are able to function in everyday life, in different situations. So when something interrupts its ability to work in its usual way, such as a stroke, the consequences can be devastating. It may be that if there is a problem with strength then balance may also be affected or vice versa. Individuals may have become less mobile and are finding walking very difficult paired with decreased confidence in carrying out everyday activities, which we often take for granted. Any combination of the above could lead to increased social isolation as well as having a psychological impact on their well being. Around 1 in 6 men and 1 in 5 women will have a stroke in their lifet im e*.

This may lead to a long term disability. Reducing the risk through lifestyle choices is the first thing people should address. Improving your diet, exercising more and reducing alcohol consumption can help with other risk factors such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. So? What can you control?

community

shefford over 60’s coffee club by John McBurney

Last month I was invited along to the Shefford Over 60s Coffee Club. This is a fantastic community club, helping to bring together older people in the town and local villages.

T

he club is all about fun, laughter and friendship and of course coffee, or tea, and perhaps even a biscuit or two. The club meets up between 9:30-11am every Wednesday at the Shefford Community Hall in Ampthill Road (next to the fish and chip shop) with annual membership costing just £5. The club’s main organisers are Sue and John Francis who have been involved

with the club for 11 years. Between the two of them they do a superb job organising the clubs’ activities and weekly meet up. Carol Bickers and Denise Watson are the Refreshment Managers and they are responsible for organising the coffee bar with the kind help of volunteer Maureen Mander. Her husband, Richard Mander, also helps out, arriving early every week to put out the tables and chairs. The

run shefford: we catch up with a friendly group of local runners Pete’s pre-run warm up

Have you ever wanted to run? Maybe you ran at school and didn’t enjoy it, or possibly you’ve run previously but found it difficult to get back out again after taking a break? Alternatively, maybe you do already run and would like to run with others but have not found the confidence or the right group to join up with? If the answer to any of these questions is ‘Yes’ then, hopefully, RunShefford can help! We are a Shefford based running group, set up over three years ago, operating from the STMA Sports and Social Club on Hitchin Road. Our sessions cater for all ages and abilities of runners and we have helped in excess of 200 people in the local area either get started or continue their running journey! We have hosted several successful Couch-2-5K training courses over the years which have helped those who have never run gain the confidence to do so and build up to a distance of 5 kilometres over the 8 week duration of the course. Our group is a RunTogether group which means all of our Leaders have received training and are insured by England Athletics to safely organise and run group led sessions.

In addition, all of our sessions are free and the only cost to you is in the time and enthusiasm you are willing to commit! Over the coming months we’ll cover what we do in the sessions in more detail and offer some advice on how you can get started if you wish to get fitter and take up running. In the meantime, feel free to come along to one of our sessions on either Monday at 7:15pm or Thursday at 7:30pm or join us on the RunShefford Facebook group or page and keep up to date on what we have going on! We will also be hosting another Couch-2-5K training course in January 2019 which you’ll be able to sign up to by following this link: Enthusiastic runners, ready to set out for their evening session, headtorches at the ready (safety first)

community

We Remember Communities across Bedfordshire and the whole of the UK came together to honour those who gave their lives for their country and also mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. In Shefford, the morning parade to the War Memorial started at 10:35am with the procession marching into the town centre. As part of the Act of Remembrance, white doves were released to coincide with the two-minute silence. In the evening there was a gathering in St Michael’s Church with a commemorative display by Shefford History Group, also the lighting of the Shefford Beacon outside the church.

In Clifton there was a remembrance service at the war memorial at 10:45am followed by a procession to All Saints’ Church where a Royal British Legion ser-

vice was held. A total of ÂŁ2,631.26 was raise from Clifton for The Royal British Legion.

All events were exceptionally well attended.

Hoo Hill Maze A good old fashioned treat for all the family!

H

by John McBurney

eading out of Shefford on the Hitchin Road, raised flower beds on the right announce that you have arrived at ‘Hoo Hill Maze’, an intriguing and mystical place. Created, run and managed by a lovely gentleman on his private land, Hoo Hill Maze is a popular visitor attraction, full of charm and conveniently located just a stones throw-away.

history of the maze The maze was designed and planted in 1983 by owner, John Brindle, and required over 1000 Golden Leylandii saplings. About 10 years later, as the maze became established, an extension was added to one side. Over recent years, John has been working hard to develop the areas of land surrounding the maze, this includes areas to play games, peaceful and reflective spaces to enjoy the natural surroundings, and a continual programme of creative planting. Recently two log cabins were added which are ideal for indoor picnic or simply somewhere to shelter from adverse weather.

The maze measures 30 metres square, and 2 metres high, with a 6 metre square centre. This is not huge if compared to mazes found at stately mansions, however, the complex labyrinth of paths and turns make this a challenging maze to successfully complete. The maze itself is beautifully maintained, however, the surrounding gardens are also fascinating, full of obscure fairytale items including dinosaurs in the trees, ornaments and sculptures. There are no facilities to buy food or drink but there are plenty of benches and indoor areas so it is recommended that you bring your own picnic. There is also an ample sized car park able to cope with increased visitor numbers during busy periods.

Can you remember the pattern for the next time you visit the maze?

Hoo Hill Maze is regularly visited by local 26

youth groups like the Scouts and Girl Guides. The whole venue is a perfect place for young people to explore and have fun. The maze is also an ideal events venue. Over the years it has hosted weddings, birthday parties, charity events and fancy dress parties. The location is also popular with film makers with BBC Newsnight visiting the maze last year to film a short story about Bitcoin Mining. OPENING TIMES The maze and surrounding play and garden areas are generally open at the weekends and during the school holidays. During the winter months and Christmas holidays the maze is generally closed, however, it may be possible to arrange a visit, your best bet is to phone John Brindle directly. You can contact John on 07752 736889 to discuss your plans.
