We Will

RockYou A few months ago, I was watching a home video from 1980 of my father’s first trip to Colorado. At one point in the video he could be seen coming out of a creek with a rock in his hand telling the cameraman “My little girl likes rocks”. 37 years later I still like rocks. Unless you have been living under a rock it would be hard to miss the painted rock movement that has swept the World. In April my daughter, Reagan, and I spent spring break in Mississippi where we were introduced to the phenomenon by 2 cousins. It’s a simple concept that has been popping up all over the country under different names. No matter what you call it the game is the same. Find a rock, paint a picture, a word or inspirational phrase on the rock, put that rock in a public place for someone else to find. Easter Sunday after church while most families were coloring and hiding eggs, my Son, Justice, who is a Junior at Ole Miss, my daughter, Reagan, a Sophomore at Southern Regional and I sat around a table and painted rocks. We hid them after. Forgiveness could be found at the Benton County Courthouse, the symbol for the artist formerly known as Prince was waiting to be discovered at the Post Office, we also visited the public library, nursing home, local war memorial, grocery store, gas station, and church leaving little pieces of inspiration, wisdom, advice or small pieces of art behind at each location. After we returned to NJ we looked around for

a group in the area. I found one at our former home on Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst but the distance would have made it hard to participate on a regular basis. So, I made the decision to start Manahawkin Rocks, a Facebook group, and have been painting and hiding rocks since. I like to consider myself a mixed media artist, my husband says that’s just a fancy word to describe a “hard core crafter” that needs every supply for every genre of crafting. So, what will you need to participate in this pastime? What does it take to paint the perfect rock? Let’s start with the rock. It’s a resource most people can just walk outside and just pick up off the ground. Any rock can be painted. Some you can just look at it and see what it should be, others are just a blank canvas only limited by your own creativity. The best rocks I have found are at my base BX and are from Rain Forest and are described as small Caribbean beach pebbles. I am on my 3rd bag of these and my last bag contained 247 smooth white rocks all suitable for painting. Look around at Lowes, Home Depot or a local landscaper to see what’s available in your area. Now that you have picked your “canvas” you need to pick your paint. I use mostly acrylics that I have collected over the years from various projects. From Apple Barrel, Folk Art to Nicoles brand. They all work well. I also use Testor enamels on occasion. I purchased the Testor paints on clearance a few months ago and remember very clearly my husband asking what I would use them for and my answer was I will find something. I have found that the testers give a very clean, crisp image when painting with them, completely different than what you get with acrylics. If you have the basic acrylic colors by all means add a little glitter, metallic, enamel or color shifting paints to your pallet. Although I am no stranger to crafting and creating, drawing has never been my strong suit. I will

start you off with a little advice my cousin Shelia gave me when I began. Pinterest and Google are your friends and you are capable of more than you think. Both are a great source for ideas as well as step-by-step directions on how to draw almost anything. There are days when I just do my best to copy what I see on Pinterest and others where my ideas come faster than I can put brush to rock. When forgiveness, love, faith, quotes and sayings flow like a river. It’s those days that find me with large trays full of finished rocks, rocks that I produce faster than I can hide. I avoid anything political and the rule of thumb is keep everything kid friendly. Once you have painted your masterpiece and you are pleased with it you need to do two things. One, write the name of your group on the back and I like to put my initials as well. This allows the “finder” of the rock to find the group and join the fun. I have found that it’s better to either paint the name with acrylic or use the sharpie “no Bleed” fine point pens. Regular sharpies tend to bleed during the next step. 2. Protect it! My two go-tos to finish my rocks are Rust-Oleums Triple Thick Glaze I get at Lowes or Krylons Triple-Thick Crystal Clear Glaze I find at Michaels. (Use your coupon for this) I place my rocks in a cardboard box or on a piece of

storefront I am hiding at along with the picture of the rocks I am hiding. Other times I will just tag the location I am at with or without the rocks and sometimes I hide without posting anything. I also leave them all in the open. Although I describe it as “hiding” I don’t cover them or place them behind, under or inside other things. I think if children are going to be looking we don’t want them sticking their hands in places to see if there is a rock there. Now what do you do if you find a rock? You can take the rock and keep it, you can keep the rock and replace it with a rock you painted, or just snap a picture and post saying you have found it and left for another to find. For some, seeing their rock found is a big part of the fun. I mentioned before I like to call myself a mixed media artist. I started making Jewelry when my mother was admitted to hospice care in 2001, I quit my job to take care of her. I then decided I wanted to embroider and bought a small Brother embroidery machine, that lead to quilting. I discovered rubber stamping, card making, scrapbooking, wood working, and Cricut crafts. The last few years I have been exploring metal forged jewelry, working with torches, soldering irons, metal etching, leather, glass and found objects. Most of my items are one of a kind creations as I don’t like to make the same

carboard and spray the front and after that dries flip and spray the back. After completely dry its ready to share with the world. When deciding on where to hide your rocks here are few things to consider. Safety should always be your #1 priority. Ask yourself is it safe for me to hide it there? Will it be safe for someone to look there for it? I only hide my rocks on public property. I will occasionally hide one in a neighbor’s flowerbed or by their mailbox but this is for their enjoyment, I don’t leave clues on the page for strangers to come searching through their property. Be careful putting them at the base of trees on well-traveled park paths. If the path is frequented by people walking their dogs more than likely it will garner unwanted attention from dogs and nobody wants to pick up a rock every dog in the neighborhood has peed on. Once you find the perfect spot. Snap a picture of it and post a clue on your page. Sometimes I will post a picture of the

thing twice. I have agreed though to make a line of nautical inspired copper and brass pendants for Creative Minds in LBI for a jewelry class they are going to do. (Coming soon – Summer 2017) Rocks found me at a time where I needed something to pour my creativity into. Since I started Manahawkin Rocks, more groups have started like Rocking Stafford and LBI Rocks and it’s certainly growing in popularity. I would love to see this explode over the summer. My wonderful husband, Chris, is in the process of converting our formal living room into a proper studio. My husband says “it’s just a craft room” but I am so proud of it I have given it a name, Studio Meraki. Meraki is a Greek word meaning to do something with soul, creativity and love; to put something of yourself into your work. Whether it be quilting, paper crafts, altered items, forged jewelry or rocks I feel like I leave a little piece of me in each and everything I make. I share my creative journey on my Facebook page, Angie’s Imagination.

Rising Sea Levels What’s not to love about spending time at the beach? Swimming, boating, surfing, and fishing are all activities that millions of us enjoy along the Jersey Shore. But our use of these natural resources comes with a responsibility to protect the environment and address the issues of climate change and rising sea levels. According to the American Littoral Society “sea level rise is a growing threat to coastal communities and ecosystems and to the people and marine creatures that live there.” (Underwater Naturalist Spring 2017 Vol. 32 No. 1) In the 20th century data shows that sea level rose along the Jersey Shore by 4 inches and the pace is now accelerating. The effects of sea level rise were on display on Long Beach Island during a winter nor’easter when high tide reached as far as 3-5 feet under the new dune fencing installed at the base of the replenished dunes. There was no beach! Flooding along the boulevard covered the bay side and half a block or more on the ocean side of the boulevard. Things will only continue to get worse. Nuisance floods are becoming the norm in coastal communities and their impacts are difficult to assess. Coastal storms are expected to become more powerful and occur more frequently. Climatecentral.org provides a tremendous amount of

BeachLife Magazine • July 2017

information about sea level rise on their Surging Seas Risk Finder site. http://riskfinder.climatecentral.org Just type in the state name to be taken to the detailed information. The site presents a clear graphic showing the number of coastal flood days in New Jersey and how many would have occurred with and without climate-linked sea level rise. The impact of climate change has dramatically increased for the decades of 1995-2004 and 2005-2014. According to Climatecentral.org “like other barrier islands up and down the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, Long Beach Island is drowning in slow motion. Over the last century, researchers estimate that the ocean and bays that flank the island have risen by about a foot. That doesn’t sound like much, but the added water has made a huge difference in life on the island. Barnegat Bay now routinely washes over the bulkheads and floods the streets. Occasionally, school buses have to wait for the water to recede to pick up or drop off children. Even more worrisome, the rising water makes it easier for storm surge and waves to do more damage in violent storms such as Hurricane Sandy, which wrecked Long Beach Island and the back-bay communities in Ocean County in October of 2012.” (Climate Central.org news http://www.climatecentral.org/news/how-rising-seasdrowned-the-flood-insurance-program-21484 )

We have all seen the furious activity on LBI and along the coast to raise houses out of harm’s way. While this may protect the lives and property of the homeowners, they do not realize that the roads, infrastructure and critical facilities beneath them remain exposed and highly vulnerable. What good does it do to save your house if your community is destroyed? Other coastal states throughout our region including New York, Delaware and Maryland, are coming up with strategies and policies to prevent flooding from sea level rise in the next century. Sadly, New Jersey is not one of them. So what can we, the taxpayer, the tourist, the water sport and fishing enthusiast, the sunbather, etc. do? We can take the responsibility to become informed about the issue of climate change and rising sea levels. Rutgers University, which is a global leader in researching sea rise, convened a Science and Technical Advisory Panel to synthesize the most recent climate science needed to help guide efforts to increase New Jersey’s resilience to rising sea levels. These reports can be found at http://njadapt.rutgers.edu/resources/ nj-sea-level-rise-reports

We can encourage our elected officials from mayors and council members, to state legislators to our representatives in Congress, to support clean energy and funding to mitigate against the effects of a rising sea and frequency of catastrophic storms like Sandy. We can support, through donations and volunteering, the efforts of The American Littoral Society, The New Jersey Organizing Project, the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, and other groups working to protect our coastal environment. We can also educate our children who will feel the effects of climate change and rising sea levels even more intensely than we do today. The American Littoral Society offers summer camps for children in 5th – 8th grade. The camps are $250 per camper per week. The first will be held on LBI July 24-28 at the Maris Stella Retreat Center and the second at the American Littoral Headquarters in Highlands August 7-11. For more information or to register: visit www. littoralsociety.org , click on Programs, then Education, or call 732-291-0055.

Let’s all work together to ensure that LBI and other great Jersey Shore towns will be around for future generations to enjoy!

Stone yards are unique to beach communities. Small light colored rocks covering an entire yard is very common to see along shore areas. Since the majority of houses are vacation homes, low maintenance lawns are a practical solution. Small yards landscaped with container gardens are beautiful and easy to keep. Every year you can change the look of your yard with large planters full of colorful wild flowers. Planting milkweed will attract butterflies. Monarch caterpillars feed exclusively on the leaves of milkweed, the only host plant for this iconic butterfly species. Milkweed is critical for the survival of monarchs. Without it, they cannot complete their life cycle and their populations decline.

Shark Skin

A denticle is any small toothlike or bristle-like structure. "Denticle" may in particular refer to: Dermal denticles or placoid scales, in cartilaginous fishes

A shark’s skin is made up of dermal denticles with longitudinal grooves that help a shark swim faster and more efficient. They are able to glide silently through the water. The deticles create tiny vortices in the water just like dimples on a golf ball create air vortices.

Barnacles and algae are not be able to attach themselves to the shark’s skin because of these denticles. Sharks have very thick skin. Whale sharks have especially thick skin, up to 4 inches (10 cm) thick.

Keep Moving Shark swimming is more like flying than swimming. They have to keep swimming or they will sink! Some sharks can swim up to 40 mph. Some are slowswimming bottom dwellers that eat shell fish, and some are slow-swimming filter-feeders that sieve tiny animals and plants to eat.

Unlike fish, sharks cannot stop suddenly or swim backwards. A shark's pectoral fins cannot bend upwards like a fish, limiting its swimming ability to forward motion. If a shark needs to move backwards, it uses gravity to fall, not swim backwards. Sharks must swerve to the side in order not to hit something - they cannot simply stop.

Feral Cats Need our help

Feral cats are different than stray or abandoned cats. They were born homeless. Cats born in the wild are fearful of people but can be adoptable. I raised two little black kittens that were feral. It took weeks for them to trust me enough to be able to hold them. They were terrified. Unfortunately there are too many feral cats that are not adoptable. An alterative to adopting is to capture them, spay or neuter them, give them rabies shots and release them back to the wild. Stray cats are cats that were raised in a family environment and were abandoned. They are not equipped to live on their own. It is cruel to abandoned an animal. Stray cats are tame and are adoptable. Ferel cats live harsh lives. Without human help, they are left to fend for themselves. Eating birds and rodents is an unhealthy food choice for the cats. Freezing winters and hot summers make it difficult for them to survive. It is estimated that 50% of feral kittens die in their first year of life unless human intervene. Generous volunteers feed colonies of feral cats and set up warm cat houses. Once they are neutered, the colony stays manageable.

Dog Days of Summer ORION The brightest of the stars in Canis Major (the big dog) is Sirius, which also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky. In fact, it is so bright that the ancient Romans thought that the earth received heat from it. Look for it in the southern sky (viewed from northern latitudes) during January.

In the summer, however, Sirius, the “dog star,” rises and sets with the sun. During late July Sirius is in conjunction with the sun, and the ancients believed that its heat added to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of hot and sultry weather. They named this period of time, from 20 days before the conjunction to 20 days after, “dog days” after the dog star.

Orion’s Nebula

The Orion Nebula (also known as 42, M42, or NGC 1976) is a diffuse nebula situated south of Orion’s Belt in the constellation of Orion. It is one of the brightest emission nebulae, and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. It is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth. The M42 nebula is estimated to be 24 light years across. It has a mass of about 2000 times the mass of the Sun. The Orion Nebula is one of the most photographed objects in the night sky. To learn more about the night sky, visit the Rober J. Novins Planetarium.

Seaside Park Keep Off The Dunes Why do we plant dune grass?

Dune grass has long roots that help to hold the sand in place during storms and high tides. The grass is tall and captures wind blown sand. Driftwood, seaweed and other bits of organic material also get trapped in the grass. Over time the organic material breaks down into rich soil. Seed that are blown into the area settles and fall. Plants grown and help to keep our beaches stable.

Gone Fishing

Pelicans go fishing by swimming in cooperative groups. They may form a line or a “U” shape and drive fish into shallow water by beating their wings on the surface. The brown pelican, on the other hand, dives on fish (usually a type of herring called menhaden) from above and snares them in its bill. Pelicans do not store fish in their pouch, but simply use it to catch them and then tip it back to drain out water and swallow the fish immediately. The American white pelican can hold some 3 gallons of water in its bill.

Summer Sugar Rock candy is made of just sugar and water left to crystallize. So sweet! Salt water taffy, rock candy, cotton candy and lollipops are all full of sugar. Delicious! Treat youself, indulge because you are on vacation! Salt water taffy is composed of sugar, cornstarch, corn syrup, glycerine, water, butter, salt, natural and/or artificial flavor, and food color. Despite its name, the taffy contains no seawater. However, it does contain both salt and water.
