We are excited to bring a premier community lifestyle publication to the city of La Verne. This is the first issue, Fall 2016, “The Taste of La Verne Issue.” We are highlighting one of the biggest events for the city, “The Taste of La Verne Food & Wine Festival 17th Anniversary” held this year at the University of La Verne in October.

Back to school is in full swing, and so are Fall sports. Holidays are knocking on our door with Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas only months away.

Living La Verne Magazine will bring you articles about city businesses and their owners, “Good Eats” of La Verne and things to do in our city and neighboring communities. he Taste of La Verne Food and Wine Festival returns to the city of La Verne this year celebrating its 17th anniversary with al fresco dining on the grounds of the University of La Verne.

The event features 24 local vendors handing out free samples of their signature menu items plus wine and craft beer, tequila and vodka tastings, classic rock tunes from the Freddie Boy Trio, raffle prizes and a silent auction. “For the past three years, younger people have been turning up because La Verne’s dining scene is much more vibrant than it was before,” said Tolia, who has been involved in the Taste of La Verne since its inception.

He recalls the first event 17 years ago at the Church of the Brethren Community Hall where four to six restaurants showed

up to showcase their cuisine. “It was standing room only with people waiting outside,” Tolia said. After that, the Taste of La Verne moved to the La Verne Community Center for several years.

“It was a good venue and we had good attendance, but every year it grew bigger and bigger,” Tolia said.

In subsequent years, the event moved to Sierra La Verne County Club but the two-story building made it challenging logistically.

Then, it unfolded on the grounds of Lutheran High School where it had a record-breaking year with more than 30 restaurants and 300 to 400 participants.

As the event grew, so did the need to find a larger venue so several s ago, the Taste of La Verne moved to the Sheraton Fairplex Conference Center in Pomona where 50 vendors and more than 400 people gathered last year. “It was a good venue but having the Taste of La Verne in Pomona didn’t sit well with some people who wanted us to bring it home,” Tolia said.

ucked between the trees and the historic buildings in Old Town La Verne, Chase’s provides fresh, unique and different in an eye-catching and delicious way.

Housed within a hundredyear-old orange packing warehouse, an homage to La Verne’s citrus history, Chase’s draws you in off the street with the smell of its wood fire grill and its welcoming and spacious patio complete with an abundant garden.

According to one of Chase’s owners, Christopher Gendreau, the wood fire grill makes all the difference in fla-

vor. Chase’s has no fryer and no freezer, it’s solely about fresh food and the grill.

The theme of the restaurant is simply: “cooking on old wood with really good proteins that have been sourced from really great spots. That’s what makes the difference,” said Gendreau.

Chase’s prides themselves on using only Red Oak wood from the Central Coast that’s 200 hundred years or older — a wood that provides the most distinct flavor for universal meats.

Chase’s attention to detail doesn’t stop with the wood, all the meats served are free range or freshly caught in either Alaska, Hawaii, or Australia.

“We also discovered we have great outdoor growing areas here. So, we grow all our own herbs on the premises — we call it Herb de Chase’s,” said Gendreau.

The restaurant also grows all of their own tomatoes, peppers, onion, chives and basil in a garden which frames the guests as they sit on the patio.

“If we can’t grow it, we’ll buy it local,” said Gendreau.

“We have a real desire to keep the food simple, but elegant.”

To add to the charm, Chase’s full bar, complete with 60 wines and a handful of local breweries, plays host to a “straight oak handcrafted fireplace that was built in La Verne in the 1940’s in

the mansion on the hill,” said Gendreau.

According to the owners, the fireplace is rumored to have once held a fire built

by President Ronald Reagan while he lived in La Verne during his campaign.

lounge, guests enjoy classic movies projected onto the brick wall next door to the restaurant. Favorites like Street Car Named Desire, Gone with the Wind and Citizen Cane are just a few that restaurant patrons can catch every night beginning at 9pm.

If you don’t already feel on vacation enough just by taking in the quaint beauty of Chase’s for a date night or a weekend dinner, the 110-year-old house directly behind the restaurant, Chase’s Villa, serves as a quaint Airbnb with a secret entrance into the lounge.

Those lucky enough to stay in the Villa get to enjoy a free meal on the house.

“Three things make a restaurant: environment, service and food. And I’m proud to say we do just that,” said Gendreau.

Chase’s has something for everyone with a menu that changes four times a year for each season— the Fall menu begins September 22 — as well a variety of other unique menu options.

the year that offer courses specifically designed for each wine theme. The next wine dinner will be taking place October 26 and will focus on Beaujolais wines.

Restaurant patrons also have the opportunity to host their own private parties on the patio over the weekend during the afternoon before Chase’s opens to the public.

As a bucket list goal turned reality for Gendreau, it’s all about good, honest food and the people who come to enjoy it at Chase’s “The joy really comes from the accolades from people having a great time here — that’s the pay off,” said Gendreau.

Chase’s is open Monday through Friday 2pm till closing and on the weekends 4pm till closing.

ktoberfest themed events have been gaining popularity lately and La Verne is in on the fun. For the second year running, Downtown La Verne’s Lordsburg Taphouse & Grill is partnering with its name twin, Lordsburg Cigar Co., in an Oktoberfest celebration.

The event will take place on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at 6:00 p.m. and feature food, beer, and cigars. Tickets are $35 and grant admission to the event, a choice of Oktoberfest style beer, an Oktoberfest label cigar, and plates of themed favorites like homemade pretzels, bratwurst, and more. Tickets can be purchased at either business.

“We’re bringing two different worlds together… Normally when you talk about an Oktoberfest you talk about food and beer and you come to eat and drink. But we’re taking it one step above by pairing it all with Oktoberfest cigars,” said Taphouse General Manag-

It started three years ago when Mike and Britt McAdams and partners Erik Wanland, Brian Cooper and Michael Manning coincidentally opened their respective businesses within a month of each other and, unwittingly, both chose the original and historic name of La Verne, Lordsburg, for their businesses.

After several customers wandered into the wrong establishment looking for what the other had to offer, the businesses reached out to one another and decided that using the same name could become a benefit instead. They began looking for opportunities to promote each other.

Both establishments found common ground in the social tastes of the local residents. Lordsburg Cigar Co. is a boutique lounge with a multitude of cigars available to purchase and smoke the same day in a highly social setting. Their biggest feature is staying open until 10:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 12:00 a.m. Thursday through Saturday and Sunday 9:30 p.m. while Lordsburg Taphouse & Grill has a great atmosphere, a large food menu, and full bar with

61 beers on tap. With all of these flavor options available to them, a beer and cigar combination sprang up as a monthly experience to offer their guests.

It was working well with the already existing “La Verne is an amazing little niche, Mayberry in LA. For us it’s all about

the community, it’s an amazing place to be and have an establishment,” said Taphouse Co-Owner Mike McAdams.

Lordsburg Taphouse & Grill’s cigar friendly patio makes the Oktoberfest event accessible to smokers and non-smokers alike. Tomfoolery is available inside and out, so no one has to miss out on the fun.

SCAM WATCH We continue to get reports of people who are scammed daily by a variety of fraudulent methods that prey on people’s emotions, or lack of knowledge of their rights or the law.

Below are some of the more common scams being perpetrated on unsuspecting victims who are taken for thousands of dollars.

IRS SCAM:

A recorded call or a live person will tell the victim they are being sued by the IRS and unless they pay a certain amount of money they will be arrested. Sometimes the suspect will have personal information of the person they are calling which makes the call more believable. First of all the IRS will never contact anyone by phone and tell them they are being sued.

All contact with the IRS is done by U.S. mail. Do not provide the caller with any personal information.

Simply hang up the phone.

EDISON SCAM:

A phone call is received and the caller identifies themselves as being with Southern California Edison. They tell the victim they are behind on their Edison bill and if it is not paid right away the power will be turned off. They then tell the victim they can pay the bill by either depositing money into a specific account or by purchasing gift cards and providing the caller with the accounts and access numbers.

LOTTERY SCAM:

A suspect will approach a victim and tell them they have a lottery ticket that is worth a large amount of money, but due to certain circumstances, usually something to do with their status in this country, they cannot claim it.

They tell the victim they are willing to sell it to them for a specific amount and the victim can claim the winnings. Usually they will follow the victim to the bank and have them withdraw money from and ATM and make payment right on the spot.

If a call is received and it is believed to be one of the above scams, just hang up on the caller. Most important, sometimes the caller will ask the victim to verify certain personal information for them. DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT provide any personal information or confirm anything that is being asked of you.

elcome to the first installment of Charlotte’s Corner.

Charlotte’s Corner is a peek into the eyes and interests of a spirited six-year-old. Each issue, readers will discover some of Charlotte’s favorite books to read, places to go, and activities to enjoy. Charlotte hopes to share some of her exciting discoveries with other children, and to inspire fami-

lies with children to go on adventures together, read together, and mostly, to spend quality time together.

The autumn season marks the end of summer, and the beginning of the new school year. Living in Southern California, it may sometimes feel as though September and October are merely extensions of summer, since the weather often remains sweltering well into the middle of autumn.

Despite the heat, when Charlotte sees that the calendar is nearing September, she is ready to start the harvest.

In September, she is eager to go apple picking. Once October begins, she impatiently waits until it is time to pick the perfect pumpkin.

Charlotte loves apples, and she enjoys the treat of picking her own apples off a live tree at an apple orchard. September is harvest season for many varieties of apples, and the apple season may extend well into the months of October and November, so now is the perfect time to take a trip to an apple orchard. Young children are able to develop a better understanding about how some of their favorite fruits grow, and it is meaningful to many children to have a hands-on experience picking food that they will be able to eat later as a snack or as part of their meal. Some orchards also offer picnic areas, so families can fuel up with lunch and enjoy the scenery after apple picking.

Charlotte’s favorite part of apple picking is taking her apples home and eating them right away. She also enjoys baking the apples into pies and crumbles. Visiting a nearby orchard yields a variety of practical educational opportunities for little ones, and apple picking in September is a great precursor to pumpkin picking in October.

A perfect ending to a long day of apple or pumpkin picking is to snuggle up with an appropriately fall-themed book. Fancy Nancy: Apples Galore!

by Jane O’Connor is an entertaining book about a school field trip to an apple orchard. It is also packed full of vocabulary-enhancing “fancy words”.

Johnny Appleseed: The Legend and the Truth by Jane Yolen is a biography in which children discover the

life of the real Johnny Appleseed, John Chapman. Charlotte enjoys reading both books after a day at the orchard, and both are available locally for check-out at the La Verne Library. Happy Harvesting!

Good Neighbors Linco Framing’s

Family Affair Written by Julia Matulionis

S

an Dimas based business, Linco Custom Picture Framing, Inc., is celebrating 40 years of family-owned success with a father-daughter duo at the helm.

Steve Lindemann is grooming his daughter, Laura Lindemann-Delk, to take over the business and the pair has already begun the process.

Laura is currently handling a lot of the day to day responsibilities and is well suited for her new role. “I work with customers, manage the staff, do the ordering, and oversee production,” she said.

Things have been going well for Steve these last four decades since falling into the framing business by happenstance.

Before starting Linco, Steve was working for the San Francisco Chronicle Examiner and would often get requests for framed articles. Knowing the low quality of the paper used, even calling it “one step above toilet paper,” Steve set out to end the problem

of bleed through and color distortion.

Attempting to perfect the process, Steve purchased the necessary equipment to print articles and images that ended up looking great and standing the test of time, leading him to start Linco Framing.

Laura remembers her Dad working out of the garage when she was young. The Lindemann kids could make extra money helping Dad by putting frames together, or as Steve puts it “working in assembly.”

Of all the San Dimas raised Lindemann children, Laura seemed to have shown the most interest. “She would sit on the table and watch me work,” recalls Steve.

Laura worked part time at Linco through college and, after graduation, decided to focus her career on the family business. She has experience in all aspects at the business, but digital production is where she began to shine. Eventually taking on all the article layout, lineup, and printing, she uses state of the art programs like Photoshop and runs the computerized mat cutter.

In addition to the retail and commercial work, Linco has worked with nearly 14,000 customers throughout Southern California

L

a Verne’s city history is built on a bedrock of ingenuity, perseverance and a little bit of hustle.

Small bands of California Indians inhabited the area for centuries before Spanish settlers, led

by Juan Bautista De Anza, passed through in 1774. They camped in Mud Springs, which is now the city of San Dimas, before moving further west and north.

More than 200 years later, Isaac W. Lord, a Los Angeles businessman with dreams of grandeur and a per-

suasive personality, bought a large tract of land north of the Southern Pacific railroad, which passed through what is now Pomona, and convinced Santa Fe railroad officials to extend a rail line through his property.

Banking on the philosophy “If you build it, they will come,” and not one for modesty, Lord established the city of Lordsburg on May 25, 1887. He launched a massive land sale that attracted more than 2,500 people many of whom were all too eager to snatch up one of the dozens of lots being auctioned off.

Lord and other investors decided to build a hotel to accommodate the area’s growing population fueled by the railroad and promises of cheap land. Unfortunately, the land boom fizzled before the eponymous Lordsburg Hotel was completed.

city lots for $15,000 to turn it into a prep school. Lordsburg College, which didn’t confer its first college degree until 1914, opened in fall 1891 with eight faculty members and 135 students. The college, which later became La Verne College and then the University of La Verne, became a catalyst for Brethren families from the Midwest looking for a Christian school for their children to attend.

Meanwhile ranchers including the Lewis H. Bixby family were settling in the foothills north of Lordsburg. The Bixby sisters named their property “La Verne,” believing that it meant “growing green” or “spring-like” in French.

Like the Mexican ranchers before them, these ranchers struggled with lack of water for their crops not to mention poor soil, floods, freezes and fires. Tired of hauling water down from San Dimas and Live Oak canyons, the more inventive and well off among them dug deep wells and later established water companies to provide water to neighboring ranchers.

Today, the city of La Verne is home to more than 32,000 people. While the population has remained steady in recent years, the community

is undergoing another “boom” of sorts. Many new restaurants are throwing open their doors to serve the growing number of college students, local residents and visitors drawn by the city’s small-town charm.

1905 - Bonita Union High School was built halfway between Lordsburg and San Dimas to serve students from both towns.

While the first commercial crops produced were wheat, oats and hay, by 1890, a few orange and lemon groves sprouted up and proved very profitable. By this time, the small town of La Verne that had grown up west of Lordsburg had died away relegating its name to orange crate labels.

Lordsburg was incorporated in 1906. The name was unpopular with residents who succeeded in changing it to La Verne after Lord died in 1917.

Members of the La Verne Police Department were on hand at the September 1st Rotary meeting to receive the backpacks and school supplies. They passed them out in front of Baskin Robbins and El Petron II in the Von’s Center from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM on that same day.
