We have made it to the middle of the year and what a crazy time it has been over the past few months.

There have been a lot of downs and in amongst them there have been a lot of positives; which has been good to see.

Without dwelling on it too much, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a lot of inconvenience and hardship for the general population and of course businesses. This meant a lot of changes and a lot more staying home.

While we were unable to print and show all of the great things in Logan, we did get to still hear about many and we are looking forward to life getting back to some form of normality over the next few months.

In the middle of the pandemic Logan had the council elections. What a disaster that turned out to be in actually getting the count done and for a new council to form. It was just on 12 months since Logan had a council when the new councillors were sworn in and we are yet to see action. This is mainly because of all the learning they have had to do and I am sure that this council will make a positive change for the city with Mayor Darren Power leading the way.

While the struggle is not over, the fact that people have helped keep many small operators going has been a wonderful thing to witness. Some business may never recover or open and it is a tragedy this has happened.

I know from personal experience how hard it has been and the struggle and have seen friends lose a lot. They will get back on their feet but it may be in a completely different area.

I want to thank everyone who has visited the website, like and follow our socials and support us where you can. The businesses who have stuck with us and the phone calls just checking in has been such a blessing. I really can’t thank you all enough.

We are doing our best to get back up and going again and rebuilding the links we have in the community. We want to get all of the awesome news back out there for everyone to read and with no cost to you the reader.

The magazine is still free and the website will always be free.

This year would have marked 30 years for the Brissie to the Bay ride that sees a loyal community of riders hit the streets to raise money to fight Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Due to the government restrictions for COVID-19 the event has been cancelled with a new idea put in place.

Like many things happening in society, the MS Brissie to the Bay is going virtual and riders will be doing their selected distance around their own local areas.

Logan local Charlie Bennett and his team, Team Jenny, is one of the biggest fundraisers for the fight and Charlie and Jenny are two of the www.livinginlogan.com.au

nicest and inspiring people you will meet.

Charlie’s wife Jenny, for which the team is named, was diagnosed with MS when just a teenager.

Progressively over time Jenny’s physical condition has become worse however she is as active as possible and is the key contact for the Logan Multiple Sclerosis Support Group.

Charlie and Jenny are also MS Queensland Ambassadors with Jenny attending functions to speak about MS. With World MS Day just past, May 30th, Team Jenny had raised over $40,000 for MS Queensland. Charlie posted on Facebook ‘Team Jenny has reached 40k. Absolutely incredible.

We are so grateful and because of your generosity we are helping people suffering with this terrible terrible disease. But we are not done yet.’

In 2013 Charlie became Jenny’s fulltime carer and the pair would attend the Brissie to the Bay events as part of the MS Cheer Club. Working before and during the event to raise money, support the riders and help promote MS Queensland.

It was 2015 when Charlie decided he wanted to ride the event and began training. Having not ridden a push bike for around 15 years he knew it would be a challenge but something he wanted to do. With that, Charlie Living in Logan Magazine

purchased a bike from K-Mart and set out training for the 25km event.

Doing laps of the Loganlea roads, Charlie’s fitness grew and as the event came closer he thought it would be better to enter the 50km ride.

“I decided while training that I would do the 50km ride”, said Charlie.

“The event was nothing like I had trained for, this had hills,” he said laughing.

As time went on Charlie’s commitment to the ride grew and over the years the bikes he purchased improved along with his fitness and training. He said the event is a happy day with friendly people everywhere

and everyone is smiling.

“The more and more I get in this I see that people have hearts as big as Phar Lap. “We are trying to raise funds for this nasty thing”.

Team Jenny is not just about cycling.

While Charlie and others on the team ride each year at the event, others are supporters and each has something important to do. While raising the funds is one of the main goals, it is also about raising awareness of MS. Jenny said I want to raise the money so a cure can be found. It may not help me but for the younger people.

There are 30 days in June and Charlie has said he will be doing 1000kms over the course of the month. That means that every day on average Charlie will be riding just over 33kms.

The Logan East Community Neighbourhood Association (LECNA) wishes for everyone to be well and safe. It has been a challenging time for many people as people have lost jobs and many in our community are feeling socially isolated.

LECNA has also been impacted with loss of external hirers for our venue and in ability to deliver Bingo and our market day, hold a Logan East Community Champion function and celebrate our 30th birthday.

LECNA has been actively involved in the Human Disaster Management Subgroup hosted by council and continuing to deliver essential services and much needed personal development programs to the local community during this challenging time. We have stayed in touch with our volunteers and stakeholders, many of whom are continuing to choose to self-isolate.

violence and elder abuse. The recovery process from this crisis will take time and investment.

Financial Literacy Action Group as well as working with council through the recovery process.

Solutions involve more than just employment and training; it involves community development, intervention and referral support for people in financial hardship and opportunities to abate social isolation. These are all things LECNA and all the community centres in the Logan region are well placed to provide.

We are considering holding off our 30th birthday to be a 31st birthday in the new year. Our Logan East Community Champion program, inviting local community leaders and businesses to make a tax deductible donation of over $1000 a year continues. Our most recent supporter was Craig from Certified Properties Group who just purchased Arndale Shopping Centre.

LECNA continues to deliver our Emergency Relief (Mon to Wed 9-11), Loans (NILS and Step Up), Life Skills (10 week via Zoom) and Men’s Life skills programs, along with our full SQW: Certificate 2 in Food Processing program.

Grocery shopping is something we all have to do and often it can be a costly experience when visiting the big name stores.

Luckily for Loganites there are other options that can help save you some dollars.

If spending time shopping is not for you and you are not overly picky on what you eat, you can get some rather decent food packs/trolleys already to pick up and pay for at a number of outlets and they vary in price.

Some of these outlets have small stores with a decent variety to choose from. It is basically like going shopping except in a smaller store and with better prices. A lot of the products are brand names while others are from the no name range.

Either way the price of most is lower than the average supermarket.

Some places offer extra free items when you purchase a trolley and that can really help bulk up the weekly shop. It can be anything from eggs to bread or milk, veggies, fruit or whatever is in supply at the time.

Besides the prices being good and the staff friendly, there is one thing that

Low cost food outlets and charity organisations do wonderful work to help keep peoples fridges and pantries full of good food. They do sometimes come with a stigma that you need to be poor to shop there.

This is not the case at all at almost all of the outlets across the city.

Everyone is welcome and you will be surprised how many BMW’s and other posh cars are parked in the car park.

Food is an essential item for everyone and no one should feel ashamed

about where they shop, whether they have money or not and how much they buy. These places exist because of a need and also to help people save money.

Check them out online and in store and you will be surprised how much you can save while still eating great tasty food.

The sound of serein’s in the distance, the smell of smoke in the air and the hope from anyone listening that everyone is okay.

Sometimes it is not the case and people are injured or killed from a house fire that started from something that could have been avoided.

South East Queensland has seen 95 house fires in the first quarter of 2020 with the City of Logan seeing 32 of those. Now the weather has started turning cold there are greater chances for more fires to come.

Of the 32 fires in Logan, 23 started in the kitchen. This is a huge 71 per cent and with most homes underprepared for a small kitchen fire, they often end up larger than they need to be.

The remaining nine fires stared due to heaters, candles, a lighter, short circuit/overload, and three in the sleeping area. When using candles in the house they need to be set up correctly and everyone must ensure children are not left to play with lighters/matches.

Logan House Fire Support Network founder Louie Naumovski says now is the perfect time to start looking at fire safety around the home.

“The first thing people need to do is establish whether smoke alarms are working correctly”, said Louie.

“Using the test button on the alarm, press it and ensure the sound of the alarm is loud and clear which means it is working correctly. If this doesn’t happen check the battery and the alarm.

“Also be sure to clean your alarms with either a duster or the brush attachment from a vacuum. This alarm could be a life saver one day and needs to be looked after.”

Louie and Logan House Fire Support Network help people after house fires by sorting accommodation and helping rebuild their lives. Mental wellbeing is also high on the agenda after house fires and during this pandemic.

This is an item that needs to be looked over carefully before use.

“Check for any damage to the blanket and check the power cord for fraying or cuts,” said Louie.

“Give the blanket a test before just putting it straight on the bed that night to make sure everything is okay and it’s important not to leave them on all night.

“When you add the blanket to your power board, make sure the board is clean, undamaged and not overloaded. If the board is four power sockets, do not add any extra adapters to it as it is not meant to be used that way and will overload it.”

As you would expect, finding somewhere to eat has been a bit of a doosey with all this corona happening around the world. It was good to see so many food joints make a good effort to stay afloat by changing their business plans and that meant there were some good options.

There is no hiding I am a fan of the hamburger. I am not talking about those pretend ones you get from those American fast food eateries. I am talking about a real hamburger; large buns, real meat that has real flavour and salad that actually has crisp to it.

Everyone has a place they recommend and most stay local to their home so they can buy it and get back in front of NetFlix and eat it while it’s still hot. While I don’t disagree that a hot burger is a good burger, sometimes you need to venture out further to find that quality bite.

Jumping on their Facebook page and seeing the range of burgers they had listed for the day left me dribbling slightly and with a rapid heartbeat as I looked to find where they were hiding. I jumped in the car cranked Burger Man by ZZ Top and headed to get me a big warm bun and huge hunk of meat.

When I found where they were tucked away my heart skipped a beat

The Queenzlander is a beef patty with bacon, egg, cheese, hash brown and onion.

as I was starting to get excited because I was about to put my order in their hands and hear that sizzlin’ pan. I was greeted by two wonderful and happy guys, Kym and Richard, who served me with a smile despite what would have looked like the Looney Tunes Tazzie Devil approaching.

Although I had looked at the menu online I was still in awe of the selection which made it hard to 10

When I saw Richard lift the completed burgers over the counter it was like the Poseidon of burgers emerging from the depths of the sea of BBQ goodness. My first bite made me understand why I learnt to eat; it was incredible and made the drive totally worthwhile.

Or are we seeing fewer people visit the doctor as they stay away for fear of COVID etc), they are unconcerned about the high number of people stood down from their jobs, the ballooning unemployment rate, the number of small businesses who close and will never reopen and the inflationary result of this unprecedented government stimulus spending.

When COVID-19 first popped up on our collective radars many people who had lived through the SARS, MERS and Ebola panics downplayed the idea that it was anything to worry about. Then, as countries across Europe and North America saw a rise in cases and deaths, a collective panic began to grip the western world.

Citizens began to call for lockdowns, shutdowns and stay at home orders.

What started as “two weeks at home to flatten the curve” has become nearly two months with state borders closed, businesses shuttered and people living in fear.

It has become most apparent to me through this pandemic, that it is nearly impossible to find quality, unbiased, factual, informative reporting. One outlet may run multiple stories that conflict with www.livinginlogan.com.au

each other and they all seem to have an agenda and an axe to grind.

News outlets aren’t reporting the facts – they’re just running campaign material for their chosen political team and embracing the time old truth that fear sells. Whipping everyday people into a panic keeps all eyes on the screens and helps generate consistently more ad revenue for a dying profession.

Progressives and the bulk of media outlets are advocating for remaining locked down as long as possible saying it’s the only way to save lives.

They are unconcerned about the cost to the economy (heartless they’ll call you if you question it – heartless and greedy), unconcerned about the cost of lives lost to suicide, or other conditions (we are diagnosing fewer people with cancer than our average 12

I suspect our Federal conservative government is trying to make everyone forget criticisms of their recent performance during the bushfires, so they keep talking about having restrictions in place for the next six months and claim that downloading a tracking app on your private phone will help save lives.

In many ways they sound exactly like progressives – talking in broad terms about how we will spend our way out of this and the economy will recover again. They are also unconcerned with the collateral damage caused by these policies to ordinary people.

“Stay home, save lives” and “We’re all in this together” are trite, overused mantras, when you add “This is the new normal” to that, we have a bunch of numpties spoon feeding cottage cheese straight into our brains.

There is the great, unwashed mass of us who say: This is not sustainable.

It is not sustainable to print money like a kid trying to cheat in Monopoly.

from the Reserve Bank of Australia that we will be paying interest on for goodness knows how long. This is money that is flooding our currency and lowering its value.

There isn’t a choice between “the economy” and “saving lives”. Our health care system is funded by our tax dollars. If no one is working or manufacturing and selling goods, there’s no-one paying taxes and hence no money coming in. Nurses, doctors, teachers, police and fire fighters do not work for free. The materials used by their professions are not manufactured for free.

It wasn’t sustainable to manufacture everything in China – I’m glad the world woke up to that. Instead of investing in building our manufacturing base here again we have people pushing for things to stay locked down indefinitely. No. That’s madness. We need to start making things in Australia again.

There’s talk of rising tensions with China? Shrug – whatever. There is evidence China has acted rather unethically throughout this pandemic. There is ample and extensive evidence they have imprisoned their ethnic Muslim minority citizens and are using them for forced labour and non-voluntary organ harvesting.

They have an authoritarian regime with a social credit system in place to manage their citizens. We don’t need www.livinginlogan.com.au

to trade with a country like that. We have the people and resources here in Australia to manufacture most things we need and there are plenty of other countries to have trading relationships with that aren’t shipping hospitals testing kits that are already infected with COVID-19.

Only ten people at a time can dine in at a restaurant or RSL – as though social distancing plays out the same at the Digger’s Club as it does at a small coffee shop; as though restaurants don’t have a margin they need to meet to pay chefs and service staff.

When the lockdown started we had graphs where we talked about slowing the spread and not overwhelming our hospitals. Well – the data is in. Our hospitals were never overwhelmed and we have some promising drug therapy treatments, combined with our 13

But now the data is in – lockdowns worldwide have increased transmission and infection rates for the virus.

Lockdowns have increased suicide rates and negatively impacted the health of citizens (mentally and physically). Lockdowns have left many jobless and likely to grow increasingly desperate. Lockdowns have decimated our economy with no positive result.

Yes, things may slowly improve but those people who killed themselves will not come back, those small businesses who are shuttered for good will not recover.

This lockdown increases suffering instead of alleviating it – it’s time to open up again.

Imagine a weekend haunted house attraction that would bring an incredible boost to our social and financial economy. Imagine weekdays filled with school groups learning film makeup, corporate team building excursions, laser tag played in a mansion-like space and more. This is the exciting proposal on our Mayor’s desk.

As ‘COVID Isolation’ rules relax and we find ourselves exiting our homes and back into our neighbourhoods, many are mentioning that they are doing so with a freshened perspective. While the view hasn’t really changed, for many the glaze of complacency has gone.

Tourism is vital to the success of economies throughout the world and is the perfect time to capitalise on local tourism. That may very well start with us, the residents, finding a renewed appreciation for our home.

In the Beenleigh area we may not be considered a full-blown tourist destination though we have been on the precipice of claiming that label for many years. Many operators who have the resources and ability to make that happen are actively pursuing that agenda.

Whether it’s jumping on the James Herbst’s Tiger Prawns bus to receive a fun educational experience, learning about local Indigenous history at the Yugambeh museum, stepping back in time as you walk through the gates of the Historical Village or downloading a bird chart and venturing into the Eagleby Wetlands on a bird sighting expedition, there is plenty for locals and visitors to explore.

As the new city Council considers a.) the role that they can play in activating our town (and consequently promoting local tourism) and b.) what to do with Council owned assets that have been gathering dust for years, an idea could be to marry the two considerations to create thrilling progressive solutions.

With that said, there is ample room for many more attractions. Locals ‘Haunted Attractions Australia’ have created many exciting events such as the wildly popular Halloween maze, the Zombie Walk, the Horror Movie Campout and more, and have forwarded their interest with a watertight and provably profitable plan to Council to take over the perpetually troubled yet highly promising Council owned “Antiques Centre” near Eagleby.

Springwood Summit Pathway Projects Delivered Logan City Council’s vision for a highly connected pedestrian-friendly Springwood has taken a giant step forward with the completion of shared pathway and streetscape enhancement projects.

A new three-metre-wide, 350m-long concrete pathway now links Dennis Road to Murrajong Road, flanking Springwood Central State School.

On the next block to the north, streetscapes have been upgraded and enhanced along Murrajong Road, Paxton Street and Carol Avenue.

The footpath was extended into Murrajong Road to create an additional opportunity for seating, landscaping and outdoor dining.

The two projects, which cost collectively $1.6 million, were delivered from the $5million Springwood Implementation Fund set up by Council after the October 2016 Springwood Summit.

Logan City Council Mayor Darren Power said the two projects would further build on Springwood’s reputation as a thriving commercial precinct and connected urban hub.

“Council is committed to developing Springwood’s centre as a major commercial activity hub,” Cr Power said.

“These two projects bring enormous lifestyle and commercial benefits to the local community and for visitors to Springwood.

“They are helping to build local identity while improving safety and security for pedestrians, school students and local workers.”

The Dennis Road to Murrajong Road pathway has an entry statement, seating, a shade structure, public artwork and lighting.

The pathway will be monitored around-the-clock by Council’s CCTV safety camera network.

The concrete path features murals that resemble carpet rugs which were painted by eight local artists and is complemented by giant pebble seats to create ‘lounge rooms’ on the streets of Springwood.

City Planning, Economic Development and Environment Committee Chairperson, Cr Jon Raven, said the new pathway and associated works were the direct result of feedback provided by nearly 200 people who attended the Springwood Summit “In March 2017, Council endorsed 10 primary actions and 30 initiatives that were identified from the Springwood Summit,” Cr Raven said.

“This project and others planned for this area are all about Council delivering on what the community wanted.”

Completion of the pathway required the dedication of land from Springwood Central State School through the Queensland Department of Education.

State Member for Springwood Mick de Brenni said the pathway represented more than just community connectivity and demonstrated the benefit of multiple levels of government working together.

“I congratulate Logan City Council and its new Mayor Darren Power on working with the Palaszczuk Government to deliver local infrastructure that connects us and shows what can be achieved through collaboration,” he said.

Division One Councillor Lisa Bradley said the new pathway and the streetscape enhancements deliver a combination of benefits for local businesses and the community.

“This new pathway provides a muchneeded, convenient and safe link to recreation spaces and enhance outdoor activities for local families,” Cr Bradley said.

“It also ensures retail and commercial areas benefit from improved accessibility to food and drink outlets and the nearby public transport hub.

Honey is a tasty and much loved food and bees are our predominant pollinators, pollinating a third of the food we eat and 80 per cent of flowering plants. When it comes to advocating the protection of bees and a producer of quality bee products, you can’t look past Logan business Bee All Natural.

Natasha Roebig and her husband Jason are an ‘artesian’ family owned business, proudly operating since 2013. Natasha was excited to tell us all about the business and what they have achieved since they started.

What made you choose Jimboomba as a location for your home and business?

My husband Jason and I had established our business, Bee All Natural in our home in Regents Park, Logan. We intended to stay in our www.livinginlogan.com.au

region as we had connected with some incredible small businesses and many made fantastic relationships with our local Business Chamber. We are grateful to have received so much support from our business networks and loyal customers within Logan, we were determined to reside in Logan, and continue to grow our business on acreage in Jimboomba, which provides ample opportunity for our family and our bees to thrive.

How long have you been living in Logan?

My initial hometown was Wynnum, Manly. I have spent several years of my youth bayside, before moving to Logan in 1987. I have lived in several suburbs of Logan, and approximately 3 years ago we moved to Jimboomba, we’re so appreciative of the natural wildlife and Bush atmosphere our home provides us. Logan really is a 16

gem, our location is close to so many central hubs including the Gold Coast, Brisbane City and the Sunshine Coast.

Our region is thriving for families and small businesses, and there is plenty of opportunity for innovation.

Bee All Natural and Organic began in 2013, how long did you plan before you started your business and what steps did you take?

Our business grew through customer interest. We continually receive requests from our customers asking us to create certain products, we invest much of our time researching and developing innovative and allnatural products. Initially, our business originated through pure need to help our daughter, some may say our business was ‘accidental’ as we were initially a hobby business with only two beehives. Over time our business has grown to become a Living in Logan Magazine

thriving and exciting venture. Our vision is clearer now, which is to supply all-natural raw honey and beeswax products to our customers and to provide sustainable and ethical education to agricultural students and backyard hobbyists.

Mentoring is important to us; therefore, we keep the synergy of business flourishing by maintaining our vision and our business plan and we participate where we can to share our experiences with our communities.

You started the business looking for a way to help your daughter, did you achieve this and how has the business developed from that original start-up idea?

Our daughter Miranda was born with eczema, the continued use of steroid cream over time had the adverse effect on her skin. We struggled to find ‘all natural’ alternatives to help with her recovery, unfortunately many products on market at the time still contained parabens, petrochemicals and ingredients that further aggravated her skin.

With support from our Doctor and our Naturopath, we researched the benefits of raw honey and beeswax, we then concocted our own Bee Balm which was used to help keep the moisture in Miranda’s skin, and to create a thin layer to help lock the moisture in the cells of her skin.

We were relieved to have finally found ingredients which had helped to lessen the severity of Miranda’s eczema, and we wanted to share this with anyone else who may benefit from our Bee Balm. We continue to receive positive feedback from our customers, this motivates us to www.livinginlogan.com.au

formulate more natural products using our raw honey.

Over the years, we were encouraged by our customers to submit our raw honey and beeswax into agricultural shows such as the Ekka in Brisbane, Gold Coast Agricultural Show and the Beaudesert Agricultural Show. We are incredibly grateful to continue to receive medals and awards from our Industry Peers who finely critique our craft and our products.

Our business model has also strengthened over time, awarding us recognition from the Logan Combined Chamber of Commerce for Innovation, Sustainability and Business acumen. Our most recent product achievement was awarded to us by the Mr Chilli 2020 Awards for our innovative Chilli Chocolate Creamed Honey and again for our Chilli Infused Raw Honey, which helps to support Chilli Industry growth within the Agricultural market.

We spend much of our time on research and development to create innovative products, which set us aside from our competitors. Our business has found ways to solve agricultural issues such as purchasing seconds fruit from local growers, limiting waste and creating incredible flavours within infused raw honey and infused creamed honey.

We are now venturing into further developing our all-natural bath and body products through our newly established brand “Bee You”. It is important to us that our customers are happy with our products, therefore as an ethical and sustainable apiary business we contribute our time to providing mentoring and educational opportunities through our teaching platform.

What part do you play in the business and how has this role evolved over the years you have been running?

I’m the Co-Founder of Bee All Natural, Jason and I established this business from grass roots. I had absolutely no idea how to operate a

business however I worked incredibly hard researching and networking within Small Business support groups to understand critical policy.

We work well together and continue to evolve our business through collaboration and research activities.

I’m hands on, from locating thriving apiary sites to grow our bee colonies, to wearing PPE and robbing and maintaining our hives. I liaise with industry bodies such as Australian Honey Bee Industry Council, Biosecurity Qld, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and AgriFutures to ensure we’re correctly communicating up to date and relevant apiary procedures.

I have recently completed my Directorship education through the Australian Institute of Directors (AICD), and I’m excited to contribute my learning to support growth within our region. I share a seat with my husband discussing opportunities within the Logan City Council Tourism Advisory Group, I aim to find ways of encouraging visitors to Logan and to stimulate trade for our region's many industrious small businesses.

You are the QLD 2019 AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award recipient for your Inclusive Beekeepers Training Facility project. Tell us what was involved for being nominated and what this has meant for you?

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity and support I’ve been given through winning the 2019 QLD AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award.

My Bee Education project “Inclusive Beekeepers Training Facility” was awarded this prestigious award due to its positive impact on the Apiary Industry.

I strongly believe our industry is slowly declining and it’s incredibly important that as a beekeeper, I find ways of capturing the golden knowledge and experience from our older mentors and become the conduit to communicate and educate this knowledge to our legacy beekeepers.

We need to combine proven beekeeping methods and combine them with smart farming technologies to strengthen our trade for our future generations. Bee All Natural has aligned with a Logan educational facility “Australian Technology and Agricultural College” (ATAC) in North McLean to supply education to Vocational Students and budding beekeepers.

We’re also developing training tools such as Augmented and Virtual Reality tools to deliver our education to students across Australia.

My goal is to encourage youth and women into the industry and create opportunities for all students, regardless of background, culture, gender or ability. I work towards breaking down learning barriers and

My vision was and still is to make beekeeping an activity that anyone can practice. Generally, my vision is embraced within the industry as my efforts are supporting beekeepers to work together to help improve the industry whilst learning new technology.

You’re a women in business and agriculture which is mostly a male dominated industry. Has it been hard to work in, what positives have come with your hard work and how can more women get involved?

When I initially stepped into the Apiary space, I had zero knowledge about beekeeping.

All of my time spent researching the internet and reading many published books, the information seemed to conflict and I became incredibly confused.

I realise now throughout my beekeeping experiences that Beekeeping can be a personal journey, and all experiences can be different from one beekeeper to the next. I tend to be a hands on learner, I really needed a beekeeper to take me through a beehive and to provide me guidance to help me through my many challenges.

Finding this support was incredibly difficult, as being a woman in a male dominated environment, I felt inadequate. Eventually, I found a wonderful mentor who continues to provide me with guidance and has become an inspiration.

I soon realised there was a huge knowledge gap amongst beekeepers to budding enthusiasts. As a backyard beekeeper, effectively maintaining beehives is a real skill, there is so much information that I needed to know, such as Biosecutiry and disease management, registration of my www.livinginlogan.com.au

After some time of learning the art of beekeeping, I noticed that I was a rare commodity within beekeeping as not only was I a female; I was also younger than many of our industry’s beekeepers.

Statistics identify the industry is in decline and the Bee population is rapidly dying out. I needed to act fast, I decided that the only way to solve this critical issue is to create a training platform, and remove any learning barriers enabling me to provide education to bee enthusiasts.

When people generally think of beekeepers, many thoughts go directly to an older gentleman in a bee suit with his smoker out in a field somewhere. I work toward changing this view point in order to encourage more youth and women into the industry.

My project “Inclusive Beekeepers Training Facility” came to life; an education platform for Mentors to align with beekeeping students. It is also a conduit for policy and relevant industry updates to be 2017

There are so many therapeutic benefits working with bees, they’re incredibly calming and intelligent creatures, they're also a necessity for pollination.

Later this year, we’re hoping to create a group learning environment at ATAC where we can teach Theory and Practical education multiple times through each year. We want learning to be fun and encouraging; Bee All Natural is passionate about delivering these outcomes.

What do you most enjoy about your business and beekeeping?

I thoroughly enjoy creating Bee All Natural with my husband. We’re so proud that we have turned our hobby into a thriving business, we continue to grow and create sensational products whilst resolving some of our agricultural issues.

We are also encouraged by our loyal customers (many who have been with us since the beginning) as they motivate us to keep developing our platform. information about bees, there is still so much for the world to understand about bees.

Our daughter Miranda is also a passionate beekeeper, this is so pleasing to me to see how happy she is to watch bees come and go from their hives and collect flora for their bee brood. It makes me feel confident when children enjoy beekeeping, that our industry will have a well-equipped legacy.

Mondaze at Flagstone also stepped up. Their management team has a reputation for thinking outside the box at the best of times. They took it one step further and introduced their clients to the Burger in a box concept.

They supplied all the ingredients, sealed for freshness, in a box with detailed instruction on how to create the signature hamburgers. That is undoubtedly a prime example of thinking outside the, um, box.

Winning Ticket from Meadowbrook IGA Owner of IGA Meadowbrook Sam Rizk is no stranger to selling winning tickets in the store with South East Queenslanders picking up some decent wins over the recent years.

A Meadowbrook tertiary student in July 2019 picked up a division one win of $359,682.38 while a Crestmead mother won $100,000 on an Instant Scratch-Its that was given to her as a gift.

The biggest winner so far has been a Logan man who in May 2020 won $17,361,060.30 as the division one in Powerball.

The Lott representative called the winning man who was completely oblivious he’d become a multi-millionaire.

The Lott asked how he planned to enjoy his multi-million-dollar prize, the overjoyed man said he already had a long list.

“I am definitely going to retire from work. I want to buy a house too and a new car,” he said.

“I will share it with my kids and a few friends.

“I want to see the world! I have barely been anywhere.”

Sam Rizk was excited to have sold him the ticket and was happy he could make one of his customers a multi-millionaire.

The Springwood Conservation Park is beautiful bush parklands in the middle of the residential area of Springwood. While the park has picnic tables, toilets, children's playground and wheelchair access, it is known more for the insane stairs locally known as the ‘Stairs of Death’.

The main entrance is found off Jardine Drive and that is where most of the parks facilities are found. There is a small car park, the picnic shelter and toilets and this is where you can choose which track you would like to

There is the shorter Stringybark Lookout track that is only 570m or you could do the longer Gorge Discovery Circuit at 1.45km. At the beginning of the Gorge Discovery track you will face the ‘Stairs of Death’ straight away. These are a series of steep stairs and that just seem to keep going on and on with no end in sight. The stairs are all different sizes and shapes and will test your fitness.

the not so fit. When you do get to the top of the stairs there you will find the playground and the continuation of the trail.

The walk is nice, especially after the stairs, and on a manmade path going through the eucalypt forest with a number of wooden bridges and plenty of great places to take photos.

The path winds up and down the former quarry site and there is plenty to explore. There are many large boulders, some very interesting

balancing rocks, cliffs and a gorge running down the middle.

The track goes in a couple of different directions and you can choose to complete the circuit or join the Spur Track which is 984m goes past the Stringybark Lookout. Continue on the Discovery Circuit and it will lead you back down through the gorge and back to the car park, with a few tracks splintering off along the way.

There is 36 hectares of open eucalypt forest to explore and many beautiful animals to see along the way. Take the time to check this out if you love nature, walking and a bit of torturer.

The new look Mitsubishi Triton arrived in January 2019 and it is a complete overhaul of the old model.

It also has a new auto transmission and safety features.

Most Tritons are four-door, five-seat Double Cabs. However, Single Cabs (with two doors and two seats) are also offered. Sitting in between is the Club Cab model that has two folding seats in the rear of its stretched single cabin which is accessed via the small rear-hinged doors that open only if the front doors are open.

Most Tritons come with part-time, dual-range four-wheel drive: on sealed roads they drive the rear wheels only, but you can select 4WD for slippery unsealed roads and tracks. The more expensive GLS Tritons (ones we drove) have a more sophisticated system that retains every advantage of the part-time www.livinginlogan.com.au

version but allows you to use 4WD all the time.

All Double Cab Tritons are powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel. It is a decent step forward for the manufacture and performs well for its relatively small capacity. It feels smooth and refined and never seemed to be stressed. At 133kW and 430Nm outputs are still decent, though peak torque arrives at a highish (for a workhorse) 2500rpm, meaning there’s a moment of hesitation from the engine before it hits its stride Fuel economy is decent with around 9.6 litres per 100km in the automatic 4WD double-cabs that we drove. It all depends on how you drive and if you are heading off road.

Both six-speed manual and six-speed automatic gearboxes are used with the diesel and the auto box is very 26

well suited to the 2.4 engine. The shifts are smooth and well-timed and is one of the better autos on the market.

When looking at how it drives you can only compare it to other utes.

They are never going to be race cars……… but the Triton does drive and handle better than a few other makes. Being lighter is a helping hand and with the direct steering that is often not coming in utes does give it a bit more of a sporty feel. This makes it better to drive overall.

Tritons are also good off-road when you want to go four-wheel-driving.

One downsize is the rear overhang so it is something you need to be aware of when giving a climb or decent a go.

The Triton GLX+, GLS and GLS Premium versions are equipped with a rear differential lock which makes them more capable in difficult going.

Towing capacity at 3100kg is behind the pack with most utes laying claim to 3500kg capacities, though a payload of 900kg is on the money for high-spec dual-cabs. The Triton also claims a GCM of 5885kg, meaning it's possible for the 2000kg kerb weight

Nissan’s Best Selling SUV The current generation of Nissan’s are not considered to be the top of the list when looking for a new car.

This however is not the case for the Nissan X-Trail as they are right up there with their competitors and worth a look and drive.

The Nissan X-Trail ST-L is the second lowest level in the range and still offers plenty of comfort and quality driveability for the money.

The X-Trail ST-L is available with only one engine, a 2.5-litre non-turbo petrol engine, producing 126kW and 226Nm. The ST-L is offered only with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and all-wheel drive can be had at a $2000 premium.

Nissan doesn’t make extreme claims when it comes to the numbers of fuel usage with the five-seat 2WD X-Trail rated to consume 7.9L/100km. www.livinginlogan.com.au

Don’t be Caught Out with Capped Price Servicing Most car manufactures now offer some form of capped price servicing when you purchase a new car from your dealer. The top ten manufactures all now offer these types of services. But what are they?

Capped price servicing is a broad industry term referring to a type of servicing program offered by a manufacturer, in which the maximum cost of each scheduled service is revealed ahead of time.

The details vary, but the basic structure remains the same: A manufacturer publishes a servicing program that covers a predetermined portion of your ownership period, be it three, six or five years, or even the life of your vehicle.

Your new car will arrive with a servicing schedule (the maximum amount of time recommended between servicing) which is a number of months or a kilometre reading, whichever comes first. That number varies from brand to brand. An example is a service is required at 12 month/15,000km and each manufacture has their own schedule.

These programs can be known as capped price servicing, fixed price servicing or menu priced servicing and despite having this you really need to understand the fine print and what you get. Some capped services don't include key fluids, like brake fluid, coolant or oil, while others are valid only for the warranty period.

Manufacturers reserve the right to change the price of some parts of their programs, be it the labour rate or the cost of things like oil and coolant. So it's best to check the current price before you book your car in.

Unless it is a safety/roadworthy item like brake pads, tyres, bulbs or something along those lines you do not need to do it then and there. You also don’t need to do the roadworthy items as it is your choice but however dealers will state on your invoice the issue and in their opinion it is unsafe so they aren’t liable.

A pollen filter can set you back upwards of $90 while wiper blades can be upwards of $35. These are items not included in a capped service. So while your capped price might be $300 your bill could be much higher for items that aren’t included.

The best thing to do is speak with your service advisor either at drop off of when they call you so you know your options. It is a retail situation and while the staff does want a sale, they also want you to be happy, return and most importantly be safe.

While knowing what the service is going to cost is great because you can plan for it and make sure you have the money there to ensure you don’t void your warranty. However, the dealer will do a general check over the entire car. This is for your safety and the vehicles longevity and to make sure nothing is dangerous.

The most common non-safety items for what is known as ‘upsell’ are pollen (A/C) filters, wiper blades, tyre rotate and/or balance. A trusted dealer will not try to sell you anything you don’t need but the service advisor normally make bonus on 29
