HEREFORDS

bull&heifer sale O N L I N E / O N - FA R M

Welcome

Welcome to Big Gully’s Online/On-Farm Bull & Heifer Sale. We invite you to attend in person or online and experience our vision for enhancing Herefords. We are initiating an on-farm, fall sale for three primary reasons. First, it is sensible to merge our fall internet female sale with our initial bull offering into a single event to optimize our labor, advertising, promotion and show efforts. Second, a December sale coincides with fall, which is ideal to easily and attractively picture, video and prepare the cattle to portray a positive image. Third, in December labor is more readily available relative to spring when we are calving and Shari is frequently travelling for online broadcasts or ultrasounding. New this year, we will host a live, video sale here at Big Gully Farm commencing at 5:30 p.m. MST on Thursday, December 11. Cattle will be available for viewing beginning at 3:30 p.m. Supper and drinks will be served at 4:30 p.m. As usual, online bidding via LiveAuctions.tv will be available beginning on December 8 and will conclude simultaneously with the live sale on the 11th at 5:30 p.m. MST. Cattle are always available for viewing, but on December 11 will be displayed inside the calving barn and outside pens. Each lot will be closed out by the auctioneer with simultaneous bidding from the live crowd and online participants. This retains the format of our internet sale by encompassing a larger number of viewers and reducing risk should people be inhibited from attending by work, expense or weather. Conversely, the live format allows visitors to view the cattle and become confident in the phenotypic merit of the livestock, particularly bulls, which could influence their operations. We spend considerable time viewing all breeds via judging, exhibiting, sales, farm visits or ultrasounding. As such, we realize there is tremendous opportunity for improvement within the Hereford breed. Relative to the quality and growth of the Hereford breed within the United States, we are just scratching the surface of our potential to create more functional, versatile and profitable cattle than Hereford has been able to put forth in some time. Within Canada, we feel a renewed enthusiasm and vision within the breed is underway, no doubt enhanced by more young adults and progressive thinking breeders excited to provide seedstock under the current market circumstances.

It is our intent to be more critical and honest in the evaluation of our cattle than most any customer could be. As such, increasing muscle, enhancing udder quality, moderating frame, bolstering center body dimension, moderating birth weight and optimizing performance are actions we will continue to take through selection. Should you value these traits and the Hereford pillars of superior docility, hardiness and feed efficiency-our cattle may interest you. Furthermore, if you find your cowherd becoming very homogenous in terms of breed influence and want to capitalize on heterosis/hybrid vigour-we would love to offer a versatile and complimentary breed to do so. We are proud to offer these cattle with the meticulous work, time and thought which has been put into their selection and mating. We don’t aim to sell purebred, commercial, show, ranch ready, ranch raised or any other type of Herefords-only those that are of high quality. Clearly this sale will focus on quality, not quantity, since that is the responsibility of our farm. In the current market price structure, there is little merit in keeping marginal breeding stock when they can be sold as cull cows or steers at a profit, while enhancing the average quality of the bulls and hopefully the public perception of our cattle. Don’t be mistaken that high-quality means expensive though. We are a relatively small provider of bulls within the breed and are trying hard to foster a satisfied and progressive thinking customer base. We don’t publish purchase prices in our promotion and firmly believe that cost and quality are often an imperfect relationship. We have always and will continue to maintain that cattle exhibited at show can serve as functional breeding tools in the pasture as well. If you disagree, we would be happy to explain our rationale for this and show living proof of cattle that have done both successfully. In the last

4

Proud supporters of

few years our cattle have been evaluated by many judges, breeders and producers at shows in Canada and the US, repeatedly ranking favorably not only within the breed, but against other breeds. We feel this reinforces the phenotypic merit of our livestock, along with the performance data we have accumulated for calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, cow weight, udder score, intramuscular fat, ribeye area and backfat-collected on every eligible animal. We are proponents of expected progeny differences and have put considerable selection pressure on this for generations. Obviously, EPD are a tool, therefore we have implemented them and feel we are competitive with anyone from a data standpoint. We are also among the first in the breed to submit samples for genomically enhanced EPD on all our herd bulls and two yearling bulls in the sale. For those unfamiliar, this testing allows a higher degree of accuracy in knowing the true genetic merit of our cattle at a younger age for a variety of traits-essentially a risk management practice. If you are unfamiliar with either of these tools or how they could aid your selection decisions, we would happily discuss them. All females will be delivered immediately after the sale. Free of charge, all bulls will be developed at the farm where Shari will ultrasound for carcass merit in the spring, after which time breeding soundness examinations will be performed before delivery of the bulls by May 15, 2015. We are certainly flexible with the timeline that these steps occur to best accommodate your needs. We know that unforeseen circumstances potentially arise with semen testing and breeding. It is our intent to be honest and timely with you and we expect the same from our customers in terms of finding a solution that will satisfy you. If our vision for the Hereford breed aligns with the goals of your operation, we would love to host you at this pre-Christmas event. Please join us for supper and drinks between viewing cattle and the sale itself. No matter if you are interested or just curious about the offering, we would encourage you to at least take a look and see if the type of Hereford cattle we strive to produce may work for you. Sincerely, Lance & Shari Leachman Buddy & Frances Leachman Tyler Leachman

Lot 1

SKYFALL is an exciting breeding piece combining 2013 Agribition Champion and 2014 National Western Senior Champion GREAT DIVIDE with a BOUNTY HUNTER 611 daughter that we consider among our top five cows for her structural integrity, maternal character and body dimension. SKYFALL has a powerful shape from the backside of his shoulder, along his loin and back to a stout hip and stifle, reinforced by a ribeye EPD in the top 2% of the breed. He is heavy structured, big-bodied and has substantial performance, ranking in the top 10% of breed for weaning weight EPD. In 2013, he was named Agribition Reserve Horned Calf Champion. We sampled SKYFALL on a group of cows this spring, proving our excitement for him. Genomic enhanced EPDs will be generated on this bull.

Calves are dehorned at birth and vaccinated two weeks prior to weaning.

Lot 2

6

MCCLINTOCK possesses the moderate frame, body depth, muscle shape and structure that we are striving to create. His sire, BOUNTY 517U, was Supreme Champion over all breeds at Agribition 2010. Like Lot 1, we consider his dam among our top five cows due to her conservative frame, natural thickness, center body dimension and udder quality. MCCLINTOCK couples a gentle disposition, exceptional testicular development and a sound hoof to cover the fundamentals. MCCLINTOCK was mated to a select group of females, including Lot 17. GENOMICALLY ENHANCED EPDs will be generated on this bull.

Lot 3

THE JOKER has a convincing profile with his correct shoulder lay, strength of top and level hip. Moreover, he is long sided, deep ribbed and muscular from behind. Couple these attributes with his soundness on the move and conservative markings and we think THE JOKER should prove a useful sire candidate. STANMORE 47R, is a cornerstone sire in our program considering the calving ease, muscle dimension and rib shape he transmits. THE JOKER’s maternal pedigree is Line 1 and BOUNTY HUNTER 611 influenced, which should bolster udder quality and maternal character.

EPDs and genomics are highly utilized as selection tools. Yearling bulls and heifers are ultrasounded for carcass merit.

Lot 4

GATSBY is a calving ease oriented, heifer service option as evidenced by his 80 lbs actual birth weight, calving ease and birth weight EPD. Furthermore, he is conservative framed and should have no concerns servicing young females. His shape of muscle, straightness of lines and rib shape are all normal for his sire, STANMORE 47R. His dam, a productive BOUNTY HUNTER 611 daughter, produced a show quality older full sib sister and a younger full sib brother that is among our best young bull calves. GATSBY ranks in the top 2% of the breed for ribeye area and top 20% for calving ease and milk.

7

Lot 5

If your breeding program is predicated on performance, length of body and a notch more frame-then ROCKY may prove ideal. He is the largest framed bull, heavy structured and big footed. His weaning and yearling EPD rank in the top 10% and 2% of the breed, respectively, all suggesting he will pass on superior pay weight to a set of calves. His sire, MONUMENT 8151, has been versatile by siring quality in both sexes with highly vigorous calves. Considering ROCKY’S performance, maternal qualities should still be apparent as his aged dam, a C PURE GOLD 1117 daughter, has a well suspended and refined udder.

Dams are udder scored at calving and electronically weighed each fall at weaning.

Lot 6

RAMBO had a moderate actual birth weight and developed into a heavy structured, eye appealing bull out of the stoutest, heaviest muscled sire we have utilized, CRUZ 0248 ET. RAMBO tracks true, is straight lined and has a muscular shape to his upper hip and quarter. Beyond that, he is short-marked, dark cherry red and very docile. His dam was a first calf heifer with a level, refined, evenly spaced udder and sired by STANMORE 47R.

8

Lot 7

PENDLETON is an exciting prospect that offers favorable genetic predictions for growth, maternal and carcass merit-all with a moderate birth weight. PENDLETON is a big, long, high performing calf with a muscular turn to his top. More subtle characteristics are his eye pigment, conservative markings and abundance of hair. His sire, GREAT DIVIDE, bred true and transmitted the shape, look and performance we intended. His MH MONUMENT 8151 sired dam is among our premier young females due to udder quality, body mass and soundness of structure. PENDLETON has a ¾ brother, STARFIRE, selling as Lot 13.

Docility is readily apparent in the cattle. Cattle are our specialty and lone concentration.

Lot 8

STOCKSHOW is a heterozygous polled prospect that blends the exciting, new genetics of C STOCKMAN 2059 ET with the proven BEYOND 36N. He is a wide gauged, square topped, bold ribbed calf with substantial hip shape. He ties this into an attractive skeleton with straight lines. He is advanced and correct in his testicular development with a big foot underneath. C STOCKMAN 2059 ET is out of the influential American bred bull, NJW 98S R117 RIBEYE 88X ET, and has been highly successful exhibiting along with his flushmate, C MILES MCKEE ET. STOCKSHOW’S dam has repeatedly produced fast growing, stout progeny.

9

Lot 9

SIDEWINDER is a heterozygous polled, dark red, short marked sire prospect that displays noticeable skeletal length, body depth and muscle shape. Uniquely, SIDEWINDER still remains sound and fluid on the move with a smooth shoulder lay-considering his natural mass. His sire, CRUZ 0248 ET, is among the natural stoutest and heaviest muscled Hereford bulls we have saw. SIDEWINDERS’ dam is a FANTASTIC 2165 daughter who is sound structured, big bodied and attractive from the side.

Calves are electronically weighed at birth, weaning and yearling age. Steer calves are implanted as an economic practice.

Lot 1 0

OUTLANDER is a unique heterozygous polled combination of BEYOND 36N and our leading STANMORE 47R daughter. Power, center body dimension and muscle shape are dually bred into this calf and visually he supports it. He couples these attributes with a long, level look, stout underpinnings and exceptional structural integrity. He is the lone embryo transfer calf in the offering and should not disappoint from a maternal perspective regarding milk flow and udder refinement.

10

Lot 1 1

ICE BREAKER is a combination of our two most prevalent sire groups combining the calving ease, moderation of frame and rib shape from STANMORE 47R with the performance, length of body and soundness of the BOUNTY 517U progeny. A heifer’s first calf, ICE BREAKER is deep sided, correct and short-marked. His genetic profile ranks favourably across multiple traits and his testicular size and suspension at this stage of development appear ideal. A ¾ brother sells as Lot 12, GAME FACE.

GAME FACE is another heifer bull candidate that carries the STANMORE 47R stamp of moderate frame, exceptional center body depth, appealing pigment and desirable muscle shape. GAME FACE has a bold turn to his centre rib and is wide pinned with natural expression to his hip and stifle. A heifer’s first calf, GAME FACE also possesses a modest birth weight figure and has a very attractive, sound uddered dam whose sire is BOUNTY 517U. A ¾ brother named ICE BREAKER sells as Lot 11.

Lot 1 3

Consider STARFIRE as potential calving ease sire for use on heifers, without sacrificing performance. His actual birth weight of 72 lbs, calving ease and birth weight EPD reinforce that. STARFIRE long sided, deep bodied, large testicled and genetically ranks strong from a carcass merit standpoint. His sire is 2013 Agribition Horned Champion GREAT DIVIDE 102. His MONUMENT 8151 sired dam is a first calf heifer that is red necked and short marked with a refined, high-quality udder. On a percentage of calf weight weaned relative to her own body weight, his dam ranks No. 1. A ¾ brother named PENDLETON sells as Lot 7.

Online bidding

S A L E S TA R T Bidding will open December 8 at 9:00am and will closeout on December 11 at 5:30pm MST, simultaneously with the live sale. We will be hosting the live video sale on December 11 at Big Gully Farm, located 12 miles north of Maidstone, SK. Videos of the sale lots can be viewed at www.biggullyfarm.com. H O W T O PA R T I C I PAT E In order to participate in the online auction you will need to pre-register and obtain a buyer number. Go to the LiveAuctions website, www.liveauctions.tv, and select Big Gully’s Online/On-Farm Bull & Heifer Sale (you may need to create a user name and password if this is your first time). After logging in select the link that says, “register for a buyer number.” This form requires you to fill out your bank’s name, city, state, phone number and a contact. You may register to bid after bidding has opened but please remember that authorization to bid is not instantaneous. H O W T H E A U C T I O N W O R K S Once you have a username and have received a buyer number then you are ready to bid. You will see a screen that is unique to

your user ID. There will be a list containing the sale lots. If you click on a lot, the video clip or photo will be displayed to the right. The next bid, current price, proxy bid, and manual bid buttons will be displayed below the video area. This page will react to your bids by stating, “you are in” or “you are out.” No one else will be able to see your bid – that data is not accessible to the public. Each time you login, the auction screen will display your personal bidding information. Your auction screen is unique and private displaying your activity to only you. Remember that you must have the lot that you are bidding on selected. This is where it tells you if you are in or out. It is here where you can also see your proxy (automatic) bid settings as applicable. W H AT I S A P R OX Y B I D ? With a proxy bid you can enter your maximum bid and then sit back and watch. When you enter a proxy bid amount the LiveAuctions system automatically bids on your behalf up to your maximum bid. If the lot closes out for less than your maximum, that’s all you’ll have to pay. This means that you don’t have to keep coming back to re-bid every

time another bid is placed. This makes it more convenient and less time consuming. It can also greatly assists those breeders that can’t be near a computer or are busy with other duties at the time of the final bidding. Your maximum amount is kept confidential from other bidders and the seller. Even though you can see this amount on your screen, no one else can. The LiveAuctions system compares your bid to those of the other registered bidders and the system automatically places bids on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to maintain your high bid position. The system will bid only up to your maximum amount as necessary to maintain you as the high bidder. If another bidder has a higher maximum, you’ll be outbid and the system will tell you that “YOU’RE OUT.” But, if no other bidder has a higher maximum you win the final bid. TERMS AND CONDITIONS TERMS OF SETTLEMENT: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, payable at par. The right of property shall not pass until settlement is made. All settlements must be made with clerks of the sale before cattle will be released. Payment terms can be arranged if you discuss them with Lance or Buddy prior to the sale. BIDS & DISPUTES: Every animal in the video sale will be sold to the highest bidder. In case of disputes, bidding will be re-opened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final. PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Hereford Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will

be furnished to the buyer for each animal immediately after payment has been made. LIABILITY: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, the auctioneer or owners assume no responsibility in this matter and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise, in the event of an accident or loss of property. INSURANCE: We strongly recommend, but do not require that insurance is purchased for full value on each animal sold. Several insurance providers can be suggested if the buyer chooses this option. US FUNDS & EXPORT: Current exchange rates will be announced sale day. Big Gully Farm will do all the health testing and export papers required for shipment. We will deliver the cattle across the border and assist in further shipping arrangements from there. Cost is the responsibility of the buyer from that point on. Calves receive Ivermectin, Bovi-Shield Gold FP5 and Tasvax 8 at pasture turnout. Calves receive Multimin 90, Ivermectin and BoviShield Gold FP5 two weeks prior to weaning.
