MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mikelpi@yahoo.com

Greetings, I always start this greeting with my hap-hazard weather report. Well, how in the heck can I make a report out of the last month? I know I have worn a light coat and today (August 11, 2021) I do believe I could fry eggs on the pavement west of my house. My sympathies to the folks that are too dry, and to the folks that are too wet. At this point, if you can visualize it, I’m knocking on wood, we are in pretty decent shape. Lord, PLEASE bless and help our agriculture community. Ok, I guess I was kind of looking for something different for a food story when in mid-July, on the first day of county fair, a young lady caught me and asked if I would come try her recipe that she and her dad had put together for the Pride of Iowa demonstration in Adair County. How do you say no to that? Well, I should have been suspicious that something could be a little different from the normal because she wouldn’t really tell me what I was going to be eating. I walked into the exhibit building and several people were just waiting for me to taste and give my response on the recipe. I think they were waiting for me to turn up my nose up when I found out what I was going to sample. Well, it was a goat/potato skillet. Yep, everybody in that building just knew I was going to turn up my nose and not eat goat. Well, guess what, I ate it. As the old commercial

said let Mikey try it. Mikey liked it, all except the mushroom part. Some of the ingredients were goat brats, potatoes, garlic, corn, green beans, and a special seasoning, that part was awesome. For me, they could have left out the cheese. Although, I can take a pinch of cheese but mushroomsno way. As her dad knows, I used to tell waitresses that mushrooms would make me fall to the ground and have seizures on their floor. Madison and her dad, Mike Christensen, great job! I really enjoyed the invite. I will eat your goat skillet any day with you, just leave the mushrooms in the grocery store. As I have always told Heidi, “We are not printing recipes in Livestock Plus. It isn’t Better Homes and Gardens or Good Housekeeping, it’s a livestock publication.” (there is a chance I could weaken someday) but I don’t want to start printing them now. Give Madison a call for the recipe. Lord, please watch over our country, we need your help desperately. Please pray for our military. May God help them to make good decisions. God help us. God Bless

Protected Processing! -

A Cowman’s Best Friend at Calving Time!

Bob Seely, WY- "This calf catcher has been invaluable. It makes the job of doctoring and tagging calves significantly safer." Marvin Schultis, NE- “It works great! Safe and very easy to process calves. Would not be without it! Thanks for the great workmanship.”

COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead in September for Cattle and Grain Producers by Michael Seek Fox Group at the Board of Trade

When Dad used to hear something for the first time he would say "Learn somethin’ new every day, huh?" So in case you are a livestock producer that keeps hearing the word ‘tapering’ and ‘transitory’ on financial or agricultural news and wonder what they are talking about, we’ll educate you on the matter this month. The Federal Reserve minutes released a few weeks ago implied that ‘tapering’ may begin sooner than expected. The kind of tapering they are talking about is reducing the amount of Treasuries and Mortgage-Backed Securities each month. The Fed has been buying 80 Billion Dollars per month of Treasuries and 40 Billion Dollars per month of Mortgage-Backed Securities to be accommodative and facilitate low rates for business and consumers and thus ‘tapering’ will entail buying less of said Treasuries and MBS. The problem? It appears the horse already got out of the corral and the inflation from pumping the money system has gone well above the 2% mandate the Federal Reserve said they desired more than a year ago. However, if you listen to the sundry Fed Presidents on the day to day and week to week interviews you’ll notice they keep saying the current inflation is ‘transitory,’ meaning not sustainable long-term. The problem? Wage growth seems to be happening and the Fed seems pleased with it, and yet you must be noticing that there ‘hiring’ signs all over the place and no one is taking the jobs. It has paid lower wage folks more to sit at home and collect money from multiple sources of ‘free money’ than to work and be exposed to a virus that when all is said and done may be something like influenza that the world will have to live with for the decades to come. The national debt is so gargantuan now that interest rates cannot normalize [back to 2 to 4%] in a saving jumbo certificate of deposit like the ones less than 20 years ago, otherwise the interest costs on the national debt would run about 400 billion dollars per year. Therefore, whatever the ‘true rate of inflation’ may be it may have to stay where it is or even accelerate if the USA is going to inflate the national debt like countries of years and centuries gone by. Does anyone around your family get togethers’ really think the national debt will be paid off with economic growth so great that the debt is reduced? Probably not. Picture the frog in the warm water in the pot on the stove. The poor thing doesn’t know his ‘goose’ is being cooked until its too late. The national debt may have turned the country into a very large frog and one that has less friends in old foreign allies as a

result of the handling of Afghanistan. What to do as a Livestock or Grain Producer? Don’t count on the Fed or the government to hand billions and trillions of dollars over to you even if you have kinfolk who have received large amounts of free bank deposits in days gone by during the ‘pandemic’. Expect raging inflation that will eat your production operation alive on normal input costs. Take a look at the chart below and you can see that the Goldman Sachs Commodity Index has to go up 60% just to go back to where it was and back then the desire was not more and more inflation by Central Banks around the world. It might just be that this famous commodity index goes well past the 850 mark and brings about a world that has Corn at 10 to 12.00 dollars per bushel and Soybeans at 25.00 to 28.00 dollars per bushel and Crude Oil back at 100 per barrel and fertilizer costs three times what they are now.

There are a number of ways for you to hedge, with the simplest one being to apply the 10% rule to the cash markets you have to utilize and buy 10% pullbacks whenever you see them and do so with forward contracts with suppliers that offer them. The other way has risk of loss that is not appropriate for all ag producers but is one that entails using the Chicago Board of Trade for long only options and long only debit option spreads that are bullish in nature for the areas of business that you transact in. This is the first time in 30 years where it may be advisable to be buying long term bull call spreads that don’t expire for one to two years. Educate yourself on the risk and then consider execution of the plan once your banker and bookkeeper are on board. The risk of loss on grain and livestock futures and options is not for everyone and being financially suitable is key and the hedge portfolios take a lot of work and monitoring by all parties. If you are not getting the daily ‘312 Market Advisory’ then call Michelle White @ 312-756-0931 here at our Chicago Board of Trade building office to request a 90-day free trial by daily nightly email of the Advisory. Michelle can also arrange private tutorials on hedging here at the Board on Friday evenings or Saturdays if your operation is of size and needs to move sooner than later. n

THE Iowa Land Guy TEAM

AUGUST 2021

Stay up to date with the latest market trends in Iowa farmland.

State Trends ($/Acre)

David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer

Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com

$16,000 $12,000

We continue to see strong demand for land auctions across the Midwest. This month we will have over 140 land auctions across the state. We are still seeing $5 corn, which will show a profitable year for most farmers. Markets are attitude, and the attitude is strong! We are seeing more sales this summer than we have seen historically in the past. This last month we have seen multiple sales that peaked above $18,000 per acre. With prices like this and the talk of changes to the tax policy, we are seeing more people that are looking at selling their land. Local farmers are still the buyers, but the rate at which they are paying is being pushed by the investors. Therefore, it is so important to utilize the competitive bidding method of marketing. Most people in the past have thought of auctions and relate it to the 1980’s farm crisis, divorce, or closing (a forced sale). Auctions are not negative; they are the means to true price discovery!

I think this might be the first year I have not been dragging a heifer around in quite some time. It was a little different going to a state fair without having to do any work. Being able to visit with customers, colleagues, and friends while not having to worry about getting one washed fed or dressed was a nice change of pace. It may have been quite a while since I haven’t been dragging a heifer, but it’s been even longer since I have just sat and watched a show, ring side. Evaluating the cattle In my head makes me want to stand in the ring and evaluate them. It has always been a dream of mine to be the one out in the ring sorting heifers. I would just have to get over that whole public speaking thing. Maybe some day I’ll be able to work through my fears and make it happen. Until then I will just have to settle for leaning on the rail and lining them up in my head. As state fairs wrap up and summer comes to an end, fall sale season is upon us. My first sale this fall will be at Pine View Angus for the Genetic Allies sale. They have an incredible offering from some of the best Angus breeders in the country. I’m quite sure that it will not disappoint. As we work into the fall season please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the LPI family for assistance in marketing your livestock. Thank you and God bless, Eric “Lefty” Lee 608-295-5312

Fitting a Hind Leg with Jon Gevelinger Products used Roto Brush Metal Fluffer Comb Slicker Brush Medium Adhesive ProPowder

Firm Adhesive Clippers ProTouch Paint Blower ProGloss

Getting started The goal is to fit a natural look resembling ideal shape and structure. Heifers need to show longevity. Steers need to demonstrate their structure can handle the product packed on their frame. Keep in mind the shape of the back leg, from hock to pastern to the hoof.

3. outlining Apply a quick coat of ProPowder to dry the hair. Use your clippers to clip the tip of the hair to smooth down the joints and outline the leg, creating a crisp edge.

4. separate the hair

Use the slicker brush to separate hair on the front and back of the leg. Spray Firm Adhesive to freeze your work. It’s important to brush then spray to avoid clumping. Clean your clipper blades with a Pocket Brush and ProGloss as needed to maintain a crisp cut.

1. Loosen the hair

Use a Roto Brush to work leg hair. After you work the hair up and out, use a blower to loosen the hair more. Be sure to Roto Brush and blow out the hair on all legs before beginning to use any adhesive.

2. Pulling up the hair

Starting with Medium Adhesive, pull all the hair below the hock on the back of the leg up and back. Pull the hair on the inner sides of the leg up and toward the center, avoiding making parts. Don’t forget about the hair on the hoof or above the back of the hock. Make the leg look full from all angles, widest from the profile view.

38

Livestock Plus Inc.

5. Build the Leg

Layer Firm Adhesive and ProPowder to build the leg. Don’t get carried away building between the hock and lower butt. Smooth up the leg hairs with the clipper by just tipping them, giving it a crisp edge for a natural bone look.

6. Finishing touches

Using ProTouch Paints cover the adhesive, returning the leg to a natural color. Be sure to take your time, keeping the can several inches from the hair. After completing, lead your calf into the sunlight to check your work. Touch up any spots missed.

“The news isn’t all the news. Not by a long shot. It’s just what reporters want to tell you about. Riots come and go, wars come and go, but under the tumult, day after day, century after century, millions of people are doing nice things for one another, making sacrifices, mostly small things, but it’s all those little kindnesses that hold civilization together, all those people who live quiet lives and never make the news.” ~ Dean Koontz 2014 COMMENTARY

Hats Off by Austin Sorensen September is here already and in southwest Iowa, we have been blessed with timely rains and possibly the best grass we have ever had. Although this is the case for us it is not the case in many other parts of the United States. One thing that really stands out to me lately, though, is the positivity of ranchers even where the weather hasn’t been so favorable. Let’s face it, we see memes on Facebook about it all the time, but no one likes to be around those people that are constantly complaining. I think it is very cool in agriculture how, when things go wrong and farmers/ranchers could have a true claim to be able to complain, the large majority of them just buckle down and work harder to find a solution to the problem. I personally love positivity. I don’t think I always probably

44

Livestock Plus Inc.

embraced it as a kid. I remember my folks saying things like “your day will be as good as you make it” and “see the glass half full not half empty.” Today I truly can’t stand being around negativity. The people who meet adversity with a “can do” attitude and a problem solving mentality are the ones I gravitate toward and enjoy being around. I definitely feel blessed to be around an abundance of people like this; both in my family and customers! Remember, as we begin sale season, to stay positive, be excited about what you’re bringing to the table, and keep working hard. I feel confident saying the entire crew here at Livestock Plus is looking forward to this fall. This month my hat goes off to those that stay positive even in the face of challenging situations! As always, if we can be of any assistance marketing your livestock and helping you tell your business’s story, please do not hesitate to call any of our team. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you down the road! God bless, Austin Sorensen • 712-310-3788 aust.sorensen@gmail.com

COMMENTARY

Van Aernam’s View by Andy Van Aernam

Seeing the posts about our governor, the state fair, and the masks are mind blowing to me. A year and a half in and we are still having the completely irrational, 100% political outbursts about how we are “murdering” people by not wearing masks and gathering with our friends and peers. And the Governor and republican hillbillies are to blame. Couple things to ponder. 1. State fair attendance is 100% voluntary. No one HAS to go. They chose to go. So therefore have investigated the “risk” over the last year and a half and have decided that corndog is worth it. 2. Masks are not forbidden. If you want to wear a mask while attending, by all means do! And if it works as well as you believe it does, it should protect you from the evil hillbillies without them. 3. I don’t have exact numbers to back this one up, but I’d assume that my odds of getting hit by a drunk driver leaving the fair or having a heart attack climbing the mountain to our camper are higher than me dying of “the plague.” I know vaccinated and unvaccinated Republicans and Democrats alike. I have gathered with many unmasked and masked members of both parties at this point as well. At some point I pray this can not be a political soapboxing topic and life can go on. This bug isn’t going anywhere, likely ever. At some point life has to march on. For both political parties. n

Dearest Lord, You are the creator of all things. Thank you for creating this world with all it’s beauty and wonder and for entrusting so much of it into our care. We thank you for our world, our country, our families, our land and our animals. We ask that you would guide us to make the right decisions on how to live and be good stewards of all these precious gifts. We ask for your hand of blessing on the crops to be harvested in the Fall and for good yields as well as good markets. We also pray for health and your healing hand on all those who are struggling with sickness or disease. Finally, help us never take for granted the gift of salvation you have given us through faith in Jesus Christ. No matter what else is going on in our lives, help us to always keep our minds and hearts on Him and how to better love those around us. In Jesus’ name we pray. IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Blair and Sievers Appointed to Carbon Sequestration Task Force On June 22, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced the creation of a Carbon Sequestration Task Force. The task force, led by Gov. Reynolds and Iowa’s Agriculture Sec. Mike Naig, is charged with exploring carbon sequestration and it’s economic value to the state. When it comes to innovation and involvement in agriculture, Iowans lead the way. Iowa’s cattle industry will be represented on this task force by two forward-thinking cattle producers: Kellie Blair and Bryan Sievers.

Kellie owns and operates Blair Farm, LLC with her husband, AJ, in Webster County. Since 2007, the Blairs have utilized cover crops on their farm. The Blairs believe cattle play an important role in making the most of cover crops, economically and environmentally. In 2015, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association named Kellie and AJ as Iowa Environmental Stewardship Award Program winners. Bryan custom feeds cattle at Glenora Feed Yard, LLC in Muscatine County. The Sievers family uses beef cattle manure

to create biogas for energy via anaerobic digestion. They also return natural fertilizers back to the fields of Sievers Family Farms to improve the organic matter in the soil. The development of the Carbon Sequestration Task Force is necessary and timely, as on-farm profitability remains top-of-mind for farmers and ranchers, and as discussions related to the upcoming 2023 Farm Bill have already begun.

Iowa Cattleman Implores Competetive Marketplace to Enhance Beef Supply Chain The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) is dedicated to protecting Iowa’s beef business. Over the past two years, we’ve made a concerted effort to respond to extreme market disruptions that impact the legacies of Iowa cattlemen and our rural communities. We’ve elevated priorities of our members by: 1. Calling for concurrent investigations of meatpackers by USDA and the DOJ; 2. Leading the introduction of legislation to provide more price discovery to the fed cattle market; and 3. Pioneering thought and discussion regarding reportable information to the entire beef supply chain through Livestock Mandatory Reporting. On July 28, the Senate Judiciary Committee convened a hearing to discuss the vulnerabilities within the food supply chain. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association strongly urged committee members to include a producer witness on the panel. Jon Schaben, an ICA member-leader and owner of Dunlap Livestock Auction, in Dunlap, Iowa, and West Point Livestock, in West Point, Neb., testified on behalf of

independent cattlemen. Schaben kicked off the hearing by drawing attention to primary challenges in the cattle industry. Key areas of focus included: lack of price discovery and transparency, meatpacking concentration and competition, captive supply, and price manipulation and exercise of market power. “Most recently, we’ve seen live values of cattle in the $1,500 to $1,700 range, but carcass values in the $2,500 to $2,700 range, a $1,000 difference between what the producer is getting and the end product coming out. If we process more than half a million cattle a week in the fed cattle industry, that is half a billion dollars a week that is eroded out of our rural economy. If we can bring a functioning cattle market back and bring the spread narrow down, that’s a way we can infuse more cash into our rural sector,” Schaben says. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) once again urged the Department of Justice, Department of Agriculture, and Federal Trade Commission to aggressively police anticompetitive activity, as concerns

remain surrounding packers making profits and producers struggling to break even. “As the first link in our food supply chain, farmers and ranchers assume incredible risk for each crop and animal raised. Their livelihoods depend on receiving a fair price,” Senator Grassley says. “Even before the pandemic, farmers and ranchers witnessed the prices of their cattle fall while the price of boxed beef from the processor increased. The market is clearly not working fairly when demand is extraordinarily strong and supply, at the same time, is strong.” The ICA recognizes the importance of producer involvement in supply chain discussions. Market disruptions pose risks to our food supply, threaten producer livelihood, and create serious concern for rural communities. We appreciate the attention the Senate Judiciary Committee has provided on this matter. We expect members to direct the Department of Justice to provide a swift update regarding the ongoing antitrust investigation of the four largest meatpackers. September 2021

Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show Blows Past Previous Donation Record The Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show reached new heights, raising $375,265.92 at the 39th annual show. All proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa, with houses in Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City. The local charities provide a “home away from home” for families of sick children. Since 1983, the Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show has raised over $4.5 million for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. Gov. Kim Reynolds, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and Iowa Beef Industry Council would like to thank past and present donors for their support. This event demonstrates the “Cattlemen Care” and “Iowa Nice” mantras, which are synonymous with Iowa. This year’s show, held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, showcased 24 Iowa steer exhibitors. Ben Kelly, of Dallas Center, picked the Grand Champion Steer and Mike Sorensen, of Greenfield, selected the Grand Champion Showman. The Grand Champion Steer was shown by Jeff Angelo and exhibited by Lane Elmquist. The Grand Champion Steer was sponsored by the Iowa Bankers Association and purchased by Friends & Family of Lane Elmquist and the Audubon Community. Grand Champion Showman honors went to Celebrity Showman Teagan Schaefer, of TaterTough. Schaefer led steer Hero, who was raised by Carlee Cremeens and sponsored by the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association. This year’s People’s Choice Award went to celebrity Eric Hanson and exhibitor Molly Chapman. The Community Hero award was a new honor in 2021 and encouraged youth exhibitors to promote a sense of community through donated non-perishable goods and pop tabs, and social media engagement to raise awareness of the event. Youth exhibitor Kami Schrunk

received the first Community Hero Award for exemplary leadership and promotion of the cause. Social media played an important role in exposing the Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show to more than 266,000 people nationwide. Thank you to all who participated in the collective efforts of this year’s event and made it a huge success! Cattle producers and local donors continue to pay it forward by donating and supporting local exhibitors. None of this would be possible without the leadership of Gov. Kim Reynolds and her support of the agricultural community and Ronald McDonald House Charities in Iowa. We look forward to celebrating our 40th anniversary at the Iowa State Fair in

August of 2022. A full list of participants, sponsors, donors and buyers can be found at: https:// bit.ly/3xYbQP5.

The Grand Champion Steer was shown by Jeff Angelo, iHeart Radio Personality/WHO Radio and exhibited by Lane Elmquist of Audubon, Iowa. His steer was sponsored by the Iowa Bankers Association and purchased by by Friends & Family of Lane Elmquist and the Audubon Community.

Summer has truly flown by. I know summer is not quite over, but the kids heading back to school marks my “end of summer!” Iowa State Fair was a whirlwind this year! With Tucker in high school football, we decided it was best to drive back-and-forth instead of getting a hotel. How is it I am so exhausted from driving an hour and a half each way every day? Our first endeavor of the Iowa State fair was being a part of the second annual, Bacon Buddies Swine Show It pairs a 4-H or FFA kid with a Special Olympics athlete so they can experience showing on the green chips at the Iowa State Fair! My daughter, Taylor, was lucky enough to be chosen as one of the 32 mentors out of 100 applicants from across the state of Iowa! With this event being so incredibly close to our hearts, Tucker wanted me to be sure they knew he was available to help in whatever capacity that he may be needed. The way we see it, the athlete and the mentors both walk away with an invaluable educational experience! Thank you to the Iowa Pork Producers for allowing us to assist with such an incredible event! Our first Sunday of the Iowa State Fair turned out to be a memorable one! First, I thought it would be nice for the kids to get an extra hour of sleep so I volunteered to go clean out the barn and feed the show pigs that were still at the farm. Keep in mind, the show pig endeavors at our house have become the full responsibility of Tucker and Taylor. That being said, it’s been a hot minute since I have cleaned the barn all by myself. Needless to say, I did not allow enough time to get the barn cleaned out and the specific feeding schedule done to still make it to the fair in time to see Tucker’s Skillathon Team receive Champion or Taylor’s team to receive Third Place! It so happened that while I was struggling through “trying” to clean the barn, Matt was taking Tucker and Taylor to the fairgrounds when the kids called me from the Lowe’s parking lot in West Des Moines to say that Matt’s truck had broke down! Do you know that little saying, “God

68

Livestock Plus Inc.

laughs at your best laid plans?” Well, I’d say we are the perfect example! We both missed getting to watch Tucker in senior swine showmanship. I cried the entire way to Des Moines. Thank goodness Taylor was able to FaceTime me each time he went in the ring. Matt and I were able to make it to help and watch Taylor receive Champion Junior Swine Showmanship! Such an incredibly huge honor for Tay, and we are so very proud of all her hard work, but this mama’s heart still breaks for Tuck and not being there for him. I have to remind myself every day that GOD HAS A PLAN for all of us! Also, I’d like to say how incredibly proud I am that Tucker & Taylor handled all the different obstacles and supported each other getting to the ring without us! A very, very special thank you to the Allan family, especially Alise, for coming to get the kids from the Lowe’s parking lot in West Des Moines! Like I’ve always said Stock Show Family IS the very best family! Please continue to pray for our military, and our nation! Looking forward to all the fall sales! Safe travels!
