The Magazine for Cowboys and Kids

MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mikelpi@yahoo.com

Greetings, Weather, not bad. That comment sure doesn’t happen in these comments very often. It’s been hot but liveable. The rain has sure been short until today. We got a whopping inch and a half so the cracks in my yard got filled in. Now we don’t have to worry about losing one of the grand kids in one of them cracks anymore. This time, my comments may be a little out of the ordinary, but I guess it’s my article, my taste buds, and my call. Plus, I’m pretty sure I won’t get fired for writing this. My favorite food on Wednesdays and Fridays, at noon, when I’m home is from our local coffee shop/sandwich shop/ice cream parlor/antique shop, kinda a jack-of-all-trades shop, and a master at tators shop. “The Corner” is the place and the tators are great. I’m not really sure why they are so special. I guess the tators must just have to have the special touch from Tammy and Suzanne. All I have to do is call and ask for a tator. They know who it is and the toppings that go on it. When I pick it up, its all wrapped in a to go box along with a smiley face on the lid. (It has to have the smiley face to be official). The toppings are chili, bacon, onion, and lots of butter. I know that most of ya are thinking this guy is a pinch (or more) over weight and he is eating this? It’s a new diet, try it; you will like it better than the diet you are on. “The Corner”

in Greenfield, Iowa. Try it, you won’t be disappointed!! If you remember in my last comments, I went off on a rant. It was really just not how I wanted to be in my opening comments, but I had to vent. Well, the response was so overwhelming! I had calls from five different states and many emails agreeing with me and that it was ok to have an occasional rant. Well, here I go again. Eugene Arthur Doran (as I call him, I think I heard it from his mother and sister a time or two) and I were in the center of the livestock pavilion at the Iowa State Fair waiting for the Governor’s Steer show to begin. We were having a high profile conversation about back when we were young and showing at the State Fair. Soon the FFA folks started presenting the colors and everyone stood. As they took a lap around the show ring, a very talented young lady was singing the National Anthem. My eyes went around the pavilion to a standing room only crowd, and focused on one man in the north west section of all those people. Keep in mind, my eyes are not that exceptional, but that day they were locked in on him, and he was in a direct line from me to the flag, to him. I have to give it to the guy, he did stand, but he stood with a glass of beer in one hand, his ball cap still on and as this young lady sang, he had to take a drink of beer.

COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead for Fat and Feeder Cattle and Other Markets

Tyson beef plant fire the basis has not improved. You’ll see down below that the Feeder Cattle market is holding like a rock with strong sale barns in the north while the Fat Cattle looks like it wants to go over the cliff. Let’s hope it does not and that Communist China will come to their senses and cut an ‘honest trade deal’ before it is too late for markets around the world.

by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade

If you are like most Cattle or Corn producers you know that very, very few folks could be convinced to sell Corn out of their bins not so long ago when old crop Corn was trading 455 to 464. The Corn market has now, as of midAugust, collapsed a dollar per bushel. The good news? While the Corn market has dropped far more than anyone thought possible, the Ethanol market is the one that has made new lows on the year and not old or new crop Corn. Leaves on trees from Arkansas through Kentucky and beyond are already falling and many trees already turning color. This ‘early autumn look’ has huge ramifications on the Corn harvest since an early frost looks highly likely. Much of the Corn across key parts of the ‘Belt’ are not exactly in good shape as it is. Let an early frost hit and we all are likely to see fireworks well before next July 4th, meaning Corn will light up like a Christmas tree. Take a look at the Corn charts down below and give strong consideration to locking in all of your Corn feed needs immediately and if and when Corn goes to 5.25 and then 6.35 middle of February in new year then you can grin while others grimace.

Cattle markets are in disarray with basis seemingly ridiculous and yet as the trade war goes on before and after the

So how do Cattlemen stay out in front of longer term Cattle price declines? Get in the rhythm of integrating wholesale beef and the values of your Cattle standing on the dirt and be ready to hedge when extreme overvaluations kick in on the Board and the Dressed Choice Steers and the Choice Box so that when solid ‘lock-in per head’ prices line up with overvaluation on Dressed Steers that you know how to use the Board to execute the Board or like-kind forward contracts. Whether you wake up in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning and wonder about your Cattle and how you might better hedge one of your ranches’ most valuable assets then call Michelle White at 312-756-0931 and request a 90 day complimentary nightly and weekend Cattle Advisory that is delivered by email. Please have your email address ready when you call her. We provide Cattle hedging tutorials here at the Board of Trade and you can come in person on a Friday or Saturday morning or afternoon and educate yourself on the risk and rationale of Cattle hedging in a global economy that packers probably understand better than most cattlemen. And remember, hedging livestock and feed costs with CBOT or CME instruments still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. n

Hopefully your summer is going well. Ours is going fast! Farmland prices for the month of July were trending upward on high quality land. As I talk with other land professionals, I find out that they are as busy as we are. I feel we are going to see a large influx of land hit the market this fall. If you’re thinking of buying; get ready. We are seeing a large number of farm retirement auctions for equipment as well. It appears that the ag equipment market is holding steady and able to absorb the late model equipment as well. I feel that crops across Iowa look good and we have had the right amount of rain. Corn has tasseled so let’s hope to see continued rain to help with seed sets & grain fill. Hay prices are on the rise averaging $115/round bale. Results from the 35 auctions (3,014 acres) this last month have the average for high quality ground at $9,160/acre and medium quality ground averaging $4,315/acre. Low quality ground is also trending steady at an average of $3,717/acre.

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

2019-2020 ICA Carcass Challenge Contest Recruiting Kicks Off The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Young Cattlemen Leadership Program (YCLP) is recruiting for the 9th Annual ICA Carcass Challenge and will need a commitment from interested participants as soon as possible. The program provides a friendly, educational competition as cattle producers donate steers they think will produce high quality beef. Steers can be donated by individuals, county cattlemen’s associations, breed associations and any business that would like to be involved. Steers must be 2019 spring-born calves that weigh between 650 and 750 pounds on the delivery date of November 14. Steers must have received all their mandatory vaccinations between September 16 and October 16, and be weaned for at least 30 days. Producers who want to compete can donate one or more steers for the contest. Awards will be given to those steers that demonstrate the highest quality at a moderate cost of production. This is called the Retail Value per Days on Feed (RVDoF). The RVDoF was the original top award when the program began in 2011 and is the most sought-after information in today’s fed cattle market. The top steer donor(s) will receive a cash prize of $5,000 and a traveling trophy to display for one year following the contest. Additional awards will be given to the steers with Largest Ribeye Area, the Top Marbling Score, Highest Average Daily Gain and the Chef’s Award which is for a 12-14” ribeye with the highest marbling score. Steer donors and sponsors will receive “insider information” on their steers. This information includes DNA-tested carcass traits, ultrasound results while on-feed and information on any health issues. The information given is to help educate on profit gains and carcass quality. Whether you are a cow-calf producer, backgrounder or run a feedlot, the bottom line in beef cattle production is profitability and consumer acceptance. Each step in the value-chain affects the end product. There will also be an Open House held at the feedlot for donors and sponsors to view their steers. The event will take place

in February preceding the second ultrasound test and mid-term weights taken. The event will provide the opportunity to discuss marketing and the traits and practices that impact carcass quality. ICA thanks Elanco Animal Health, which is the lead supporter of the ICA Carcass Challenge. Details and general guidelines about the contest can be found on the ICA website www.iacattlemen.org or you may contact any of the YCLP members listed below to enter a steer in the 20192020 ICA Carcass Challenge Contest. You may also call the ICA office at 515.296.2266.

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Nominate a Commercial Producer The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association annually honors an outstanding commercial cattle producer. Your nominations are critical to recognize those individuals who “give their all” to make our industry the best it can be. We are very proud of the contributions made by the producers in our industry. This is an opportunity to recognize them both personally and professionally. The winners will be recognized at the Iowa Cattle Industry Leadership Summit in December. Any producer member of the ICA may be nominated for this award by any ICA member or county association in good standing. The individual being nominated

may fill out the application. The entry form may be submitted at any time but they must be sent to ICA by September 30. Any form received AFTER that date is ineligible for this year. Judging will be based on the nomination form. Management practices, involvement in the industry and achievements, among other credentials will be considered in determining a winner. Realizing the nomination forms somewhat limit your comments, we would encourage you to send any photographs, newspaper clippings, letters of recommendation, etc. with this nomination form. COMMENTARY

For Pete’s Sake by Anthony Peoples

I had a heck of a deal happen to me a week or so ago. As I was driving (too fast) in my side by side UTV parallel to a corn field, I told myself to slow down before I hit a dang deer. I hadn’t anymore than said that when a blur came into my peripheral vision and hit me just pretty dang hard. A doe had come out of the corn and thought she had time to beat me across the field road. This happened while I was still being dumb and

36

going way too fast. A loud commotion ensued and my head started hurting and shoulder aching. This doe had made it partially into the side by side, enough to hit me and my rear view mirror! I slowed down and turned around to see if she had stuck around or what kind of shape she was in, but she wasn’t there. I got out of my side by side to see if there was any damage and I was surprised to see she had landed in the back! A little banged up with a giant headache and feeling more than lucky, I had gotten the better end of this wreck. Sadly, she was no match for my hard head that everyone always speaks of. This little episode reminded me to always listen to that little voice in your head and to slow the heck down! It’s unlikely that any of you have a head as hard as mine! n

"Greetings" continued from pg 4 Who raised this ungrateful, disrespectful guy? He probably should have been escorted out of the pavilion. I will go out on a limb here and tell you he is not a part of a FFA or 4-H family because our farm and country-raised kids and adults have respect for this country and the flag. End of rant!! Well, maybe one more rant. Fake meat, its either meat or it ain’t. Don’t try to confuse folks on what it is. Plants and slime do not make beef, chicken, fish, or pork. If I want salad with slime I will order salad. For those fast food places that want to substitute plants and slime for meat, you don’t need my business. The new Iowa Cattleman’s tee shirt says it best, “Salad, its what my food eats.” Don’t be fooled!! PLEASE keep our service folks; past, present and future in you’re thoughts and prayers. FOR YOUR INFORMATION..

How to Handle Cattle Safely Using Cattle Bunt Order It doesn’t take long to realize that cattle have a social organization and hierarchy within their herd; this is often referred to as the bunt order. Anyone who’s worked with cattle for a short period of time quickly picks up on the hierarchy. Efficient cattle handlers use the bunt order to their advantage when working with cattle. Cattle establish their bunt order, and maintain it, by bunting other cattle, hence the name. It’s a natural behavior, first seen in calves as they bunt their mothers’ udder to stimulate milk. Later, calves bunt the flanks of their dams during play, as they are learning social skills within the herd. Bunting in mature cattle can be play, or an aggressive behavior used in establishing their hierarchy and social organization. Subordinate cattle may use bunting in defense from an alpha animal. Cattle handlers should be aware that bunting is also an agonistic behavior, defined as related to fighting. Recognizing signs of agonistic behavior towards handlers, including threats, displays and retreats, is important for personal safety while working cattle. Cattle that are aggressive towards handlers may bunt, kick, or crush. THE BASICS OF CATTLE BUNT ORDER Social tensions increase in cattle groups that we create, versus the ones cattle would naturally select on their own. Natural social organization for cattle has cows and calves grouped together, bachelor groups, and independent bulls. The natural groups tend to be smaller than groups created by handlers. Hence, it’s important for the handler to be aware of bunting, and provide enough space for subordinate cattle to avoid the alpha cattle. Many factors influence which cattle will dominate in the bunt order. These include: • Height and weight, • Cattle age, • Sex of the animal, • Horned versus polled, and • Territorial behavior of the animal. Research has shown that weight, age of the animal, and the presence of horns are all factors that lead to a higher ranking in the bunt order. Cattle with horns use the horns to push or strike in bnting, whereas a polled animal bunts by ramming their head into another animal. Alpha cattle will bunt the flank, rump, neck or shoulder, and when bunting the flank have the advantage over the other animal. Subordinate cattle will submit, flee or pivot back to a head-to-head position when being flanked. You may hear the term clinching referenced in discussions about bunting. Clinching happens when one animal, the alpha, pushes its head between the back legs of the subordinate animal. Cattle may also rest in a clinch position for a few moments during bunting. BUNT ORDER AS A CATTLE HANDLING TOOL Bunt order does not frequently change once it’s established. Learning the bunt order of the herd can be advanta-

geous in working your cattle and decreasing stress in the herd. Vision is the primary sense that cattle rely on. Handlers can also use vision to our advantage when working cattle. Watch the stature of animals during bunting, and you will note those with an alpha stance versus those with a subordinate and defensive stature. Handlers will notice the cattle that are higher in the bunt order moving near the front of the group when they are travelling or foraging on their own. When handlers are moving cattle, the dominant cattle will be in the middle of the herd, and less dominant cattle are at the front. In this situation subordinate cattle are also behind those higher in the bunt order. It’s important for handlers not to pressure the cattle at the back, as this will cause them to flee if possible, or push on alpha cattle ahead of them and create tension and aggression in the social organization of the herd. Cattle at a feed bunk or water trough are close together when their bunt order is similar. The farther apart the cattle are, the greater the difference in their bunt order. Alpha cattle move around less at the feed and water troughs, whereas cattle that are lower in the bunt order move around more frequently to avoid agnostic interactions with those higher in the bunt order. New cattle introduced to the herd tend to be submissive because of territoriality; the existing herd has an advantage. In some cases, aggressive behavior escalates for the first 24 hours, and then new hierarchies form within three days. After cattle have acclimated, bunting may reorganize the social structure of the herd. If cattle have been in the same group, separated, and then re-grouped, they will maintain their original bunt order. Hormones play a role in bunt order. Cattle that are in heat exhibit more alpha behaviors, and those that are pregnant have fewer dominant behaviors. As expected, bulls are dominant over cows. Cattle that are sick also exhibit less dominance; handlers should always be watching the herd for changes in bunt order as early detection of illness or pregnancy. Bunt order is a natural behavior for cattle and an essential component in creating their social organization and hierarchy. Understanding the bunt order of our groups of cattle allows us as handlers to work within the social hierarchy of the herd to move cattle efficiently and reduce stress on the animals. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 31,2019

Iowa State Students to Host 7th Annual Bacon Expo

AMES, IA, August 31st, 2019 - Iowa State University students will be hosting the 2019 Bacon Expo on October 12th from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at the Jeff and Deb Hansen Agricultural Student Learning Center, located South of the Iowa State University campus. The theme of this year’s event is Bacon at the Beach. Bacon Expo is a family-friendly event that draws over 2,000 guests annually, who come together for one common cause: bacon. Attendees have the opportunity to sample innovative bacon treats such as bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers, bacon mac and cheese and maple bacon cupcakes, or to simply indulge in traditional style bacon. Additionally, you may have the chance to participate in the bacon eating contest, watch the live entertainment, or become educated on Iowa’s Pork Industry through educational games and activities. Proceeds of this year’s event will go to support Iowa State University’s Dance Marathon, whose fundraising efforts go to support the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital by providing financial and emotional support to children with life threatening illnesses and their families. Bacon Expo will also continue to donate leftover bacon from the event to Food at First in Ames. Food at First serves seven hot meals a week to those in need. For more information and tickets, visit www.baconcxpo.ag.iastatc.edu, or “like” Iowa State Bacon Expo on Facebook and Instagram.

If anyone needs some advice on how to make your pregnant wife extremely nervous, just book a sale every weekend during the month she is due. Couple that with her already fragile, emotional mind and you have a very unimpressed wife. close to home and I have a back-up plan in order just in case! I may give Tamar a hard time now and then about her pregnancy brain, but truthfully she has been an absolute trooper throughout the past 8 months. She has not let this slow her down and has managed to continue doing great work on her new job! We have the home ready and are anxious to welcome our little man into the world next month. As the state fairs and summer show season comes to end, I hope that you all had a successful and fun summer with your families. I am personally looking forward to the cooler temps and fall weather. I am excited to kick off this fall sale season and look forward to working with many of you! Don’t hesitate to give me a call if I can be of any assistance. Clip Like a Pro Hair Prep

4-1-1 with Kirk Stierwalt

Use a blower to blow the dirt out of your calf’s hair Wash your calf with Degreasing Shampoo. Degreasing gets the hide and hair free of dirt without making it too soft. Soft hair can be difficult to clip. Dry your calf completely with a blower. Be sure the hair is completely dry before you begin clipping. ProTip: Apply shampoo directly to dry hair using a livestock foamer for the most effective clean. No need to pre-rinse! Wrap each lead around the head gate bar once then tie a half hitch to the outer bar of the chute.

Set Up Use a chute for safe clipping for both you and your calf Using a Double Tie Clipping Halter, tie your calf in the chute with its head the same height it is when you are showing Never clip alone. Have someone scratch the calf’s belly with a show stick to keep them calm.

Key Tools Double Tie Clipping Halter Metal Tail Clamp Metal Fluffer Comb ProGloss Clippers Blades

Kirk likes this so much that he orders it in a 55 gallon drum!

Clipping Kirk recommends clipping 5-7 days before a show It’s important to step back and look at your work. Remember the judge’s primary view point is 10-15 feet away It’s a long process so be sure to give yourself and your animal a break, 1-2 hour sessions work best

ProTip: Keep your clippers clean and oiled. ProGloss works as a great lubricant. Make sure you are spraying it on the blades at least every 30 minutes.

Clipping Steps:

Step 1: Tail Step 2: Chest & Sheath Step 3: Top of Neck Step 4: Shoulder and Front Leg Step 5: Belly and Side Wall Step 6: Back Leg Step 7: Hind Quarter Step 8: Topline & Tailhead Step 9: Head & Neck Complete Steps 4-7 on the left side of your calf; then repeat on the right side before moving on to Step 8.

Kirk prefers a metal comb when clipping, because it doesn’t create static.

As I write, we are just finishing up the Iowa State Fair. Every year we try to be prepared for the nonstop 11 days, and every year we are completely exhausted by the end. It’s always so emotional for our family at the end of the fair when we have to say goodbye to the barrows the kids have worked on since spring. The thing we hold onto during that rough time is knowing that we are helping to feed the world. This year was the first for a new show at the Iowa State Fair called Bacon Buddies! I apologize if you have already seen enough about it on social media, but this show was so incredibly special to our family. Bacon Buddies pairs 4-H/FFA members with a Special Olympic athlete. The goal is to give these athletes a chance to show a pig at the Iowa State Fair. Special Olympics has a campaign to end discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities and to create a fully inclusive world. Bacon Buddies aims to be a part of that inclusion campaign and create friendships between 4-H/FFA youth and Special Olympic athletes. Pig farmers, no matter their age or how many pigs they have all believe in giving back to their communities - it’s at the core of

the Weinheimer family from Greenfield. Tucker and Taylor both ended up being mentors at the show. I think both of them would say their favorite part was letting their exhibitors get to know the pigs before the show. I cannot even begin to explain how incredible the entire process has been, and we hope to see many, many more years to come! Our little Miss Treva will Treva found Papa be more than ready as well! Good luck to all the exhibitors and families in the upcoming shows and be sure to get to some of these fall sales! Give one of our representatives a call, they travel a ton and see a lot of livestock this fall. You can find us on Facebook or our web page, remember the entire magazine is always on our website too! As always please keep our military and our nation in your prayers! God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig • 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com www.livestockplusinc.com

the entire livestock industry. In my personal opinion, this show was incredible! The judge was fantastic Judge Brad Mabry talking to the group Tucker, Reagan, Ian making ALL the kiddos feel so proud and gave them a chance to SHINE! Also, to the pairs of kids that had fun washing, walking

Tuck, Reagan, and Ian and just getting to know one another, it was so amazing to watch! Our son, Tucker, was fortunate enough to be included in the initial promotion with our friends
