MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mikelpi@yahoo.com

Greetings It’s county fair time! There’s heat and humidity and not much precipitation. Hopefully the Good Lord will work us up some of that precipitation in the very near future. I guess it’s Iowa, you gotta love it. This article is usually the lastminute thing, and mainly because I’m always on the lookout for the next good meal. As most of you know, I sure try not to miss a meal so, there are lots of decisions to be made. To begin, we all know sale day food preparation is very difficult. What’s the menu, how many do you prepare for, how do we keep meat moist and edible, how do you keep cold stuff cold, and so on and so on. Well, June 1, 2019 was as close to a great presale and post-sale meal that I have ever eaten. First, as we arrived, we were invited for breakfast/brunch. Ham, bacon, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, and all you could eat. Wow! It was a great pre-sale brunch. Then it was on to the 450 head cow sale. We were working our way through them and it was running through my mind that we had to leave as soon as the sale was over because we had another sale the next day 200 miles down the road. The sad part of that was the fact that I knew that they usually have a steak feed after the sale and we were going to have to miss it. I was not at all excited to have to eat at some little choke and puke drive through on the way to the next sale. As luck would have it, on the way out they said the steaks were ready if we wanted to eat. I looked at Austin and we both decided we could get to the next sale site 30 minutes or so later than we wanted to, the sale wasn’t till the next day, anyway. We walked up to what looked like 20 plus ribeye steaks that looked deadly in that roaster. I moved the top three or four and grabbed one that I thought I wanted to try, then bellied up to the potato salad, and off to a table to enjoy one of the best flavored, the most tender, 16 oz plus ribeye, seasoned to a perfection, that I had had for a long time. Now, I suppose being hungry had something to do with it but I’m pretty sure I didn’t stop to breathe the

4

Livestock Plus Inc.

first half of that steak. Then when I did slow up to breathe, I looked at Austin and his was gone! I guess to say it point blank, if you didn’t attend the Incredible Female sale in Dunlap, Iowa June 1 and stay for the post sale steak you lost out big time. Sheldon Jacobson, masterful job of preparation, Teifenthalers in Holstein, Iowa, I’m not sure where you get the beef, but don’t change. Al Bruhn, thank you for all the hospitality and providing us a great set of cattle to help merchandise. I don’t know what Al has in store for his Labor Day event but I am not missing it, the food and the cattle are deadly. I have always said I wasn’t going to go off on a tangent in my opening comments, but here’s to breaking my own rules. We were eating out the other day and my wife tells me that some restaurants are not flying the American flag anymore because it offends some folks. Well folks, it offends me that you don’t fly an American flag. So, if you have a flagpole with no flag, you don’t need my business. I have had many friends lay their lives on the line so that we can have the freedoms we have. Don’t mess with them!!! Also, if you don’t like our country, and our way of life, may I suggest a one-way ticket to wherever you may like it better and be less offended. This is America and we fly the American flag. While on this tirade, to that USA Women’s Soccer player and those players that agree with her; if you don’t like this country and what it stands for, leave and take the USA emblem off your jersey. I would rather lose with dignity than win with a traitor. Good luck to all the exhibitors at the county and state fairs. To all of our United States service folks past, present, and future THANK YOU. God Bless,

Visitors always welcome! The following is a speech written by a young lady that happens to be in our 4-H Club, The Orient Bulldogs. Please read the article to the end! I’m proud of her for finding information about both sides of the fake meat controversy to educate consumers so they can make informed decisions.... even though I am clearly on the side of REAL BEEF! This is her last year in 4-H and for me to say I’m going to miss her terribly is an understatement! ~ Heidi Sorensen Rohrig

Laboratory Grown Meat by Madison Suhr

“The poor man must walk to get meat for his stomach, the rich man to get a stomach to his meat.” ~ Benjamin Franklin 1706-1790. As long as I, and I’m sure many of you can remember, meat has played a substantial role in your life, but maybe not in the way you expect. Picture this, it’s the beginning of July, its Independence Day. You and your friends and family, like many years before, get together to savor the day our great country gained its independence. You fire up the grill and the hot charcoals begins to smolder. Shortly after, you sit down with the ones you love to enjoy an all American meal. You slice into your medium well steak. “What could be better?” you ask yourself. You finish up your dinner and you don’t think for just one instance where your food came from. Your potatoes came from Idaho you assume, your apples from Washington, your juicy steak from the Midwest. But that’s not necessarily true. What if I told you the future of meat production was meat grown in labs? Now what would you think if I told you the future is here, the future is now. The idea of laboratory grown meat first debuted in 2013 in London, England. However, laboratory grown meat could be available to us before we know it. But how is this possible you may ask? Scientists first begin this process by extracting cells from a living animal. They then surround the tissue with salts, sugars, and other nutrients necessary for growth. This tricks the tissue sample into believing that it’s still in the animal rather than a lab. The cells divide and begin to reproduce. This process will eventually result in a substance similar in both looks and texture to ground beef. Scientists would eventually like to have an item that resembles a retail cut such as a sirloin or a chuck roast, at this point the molecular structure associated is much too complex, although it is possible. The promise of laboratory

grown meat isn’t to stop eating animals, but rather a possible solution to eat fewer of them. In America alone, we consume 26 billion pounds of beef each year. That is roughly the same weight as 13 million small cars. This results in many large scale feedlot operations to mass produce beef for consumers. Many companies, like “Just Inc.” located in San Francisco, California and Finless Foods based in Brooklyn, New York share the same goal, to globally produce plant based foods while trying to find an alternative for meat production for the expected population of 9.7 billion by the year 2050. Now, before you form an opinion, I want to explain both sides to this whirlwind of a topic. I’m going to mention both the costs and benefits associated. First the benefits. If laboratory grown meat gets cleared for human consumption, this could reduce the number of feedlots, which in return would allow for said land and resources to be available for new development opportunities. Another benefit I’m going to mention is the environmental aspect. Agriculture is responsible for 2.5% of Greenhouse gas emissions and with the possible decrease in large scale operations this could significantly reduce the carbon footprint that agriculture has. Now, I’m going to focus on the negatives. The first initial problem is cost. In 2013, the price to produce the first lab grown burger was an astonishing $325,000, although with advancements by the year 2015 the price had significantly dropped to around $11. Another negative effect laboratory grown meat could have is its potential to put people out of work. Cattle feedlot operations in the United States alone produce close to 27,000 jobs. In 2013, more than 482,000 workers were employed in the meat and poultry packing and processing industries. Their combined salaries total more than 20 billion dollars. Laboratory grown meat would produce more jobs for scientists, biochemists, and those with college degrees and put farmers and ranchers out of work. In fact, the United States Cattlemen’s Association has filed a petition with the United States Department of Agriculture in February of 2018. The United States Cattlemen’s Association petition requests USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service to limit the use of the terms “beef” and “meat” to products only derived from naturally and traditionally raised livestock. If passed, this petition wouldn’t prevent the production of laboratory grown meat, but address laboratory grown meat for what it is. So consumers don’t face confusion, products must be accurately labeled. However, the biggest problem with laboratory grown meat

"Lab Meat" continued from page 28 could be still to come. Many consumers aren’t sold on the idea and have questions on the safety and nutritional value associated with laboratory grown meat. In fact, according to the Iowa Farm Bureau Food and Farm Index only 30 percent of individuals would be likely to buy imitation meat, even if it was readily available to them. According to Michigan State University’s Food Literacy and Engagement Poll, which surveyed over 2,100 Americans in 2018 asked the question, “How likely would you be to purchase foods that look and taste identical to meat, but are based on ingredients that are produced artificially?” The study resulted in a fascinating 48% stating they would be unlikely to purchase cultured meat. In the end, whether you’re a consumer or producer, one question we all need to ask ourselves is what is the long term goal of agriculture? The main objective of agriculture is to eradicate hunger and to feed the always growing population. Advancements like laboratory grown meat could be a possible solution to such a problem. So my question to you is what side do you stand on? What’s your opinion? Bibliography Kirshenbaum, Sheril. “WOULD YOU EAT ‘MEAT’ FROM A LAB? COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead for Fat and Feeder Cattle and Corn

and keeps you from benefitting from $6.00 to 7.00 per bushel Corn. You’ll notice down below in the charts that Corn looks clean and clear to over 6.00 per bushel and opinions of 146 bushels per acre yields on Corn should facilitate the 6 to 7 per bushel.

by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade

Every 7 to 12 years, or so it would appear, Cattlemen and Farmers seem to have an opportunity to go to the Corn market and take advantage of dire planting or weather conditions that cause Corn to go parabolic, meaning dramatically higher than folks thought possible. Remember 7 years ago on the drought year of 2012? Corn went 525 early summer to over 840 per bushel and blew everyone’s minds. Yes, it came back down fairly quickly, however, many livestock and grain producers were able to buy calls or bull call spreads and ride that Corn market up and put a dent in some of their losses’ of either missed Cattle Hedges on the ranch or to make up for losses’ sustained by growing Corn and not having much to show for. Now, throw into this current equation-environment of dramatically delayed planting and already yellow corn plants and add into this that the Federal Reserve and the Central Banks from around the world all have expressly said they want and will manage monetary policy to achieve higher inflation and you have a powerful ‘Golden markets’ situation. After all, if the powers that be want more inflation then would it not be reasonable to assume that they will get the inflation and that all things that are made with and by Corn, i.e. charcoal briquettes, drywall, corn syrup and hundreds of other products will go up 10 or 20% in price and the Federal Reserve and other government officials will grin and pat themselves on the back to congratulate themselves for achieving inflation. Said inflation will severely hurt the purchasing power of children and grandchildren but the powers that be have not seemed to care since 1983. When we talk about Golden Markets’ we are alluding to Corn and Gold and if you do not like the idea of interacting with Gold then focus on one thing intently and do so with the Corn market. Here’s the way we see it. If you own Corn on the Board of Trade here in Chicago then you are to a degree hedging your Feeder Cattle, especially if your ranch is in the south. A move on Corn from sub-450 per bushel to 6.40 per bushel is serious and the ramification of it happening are severe and we believe strongly that Corn will go to 6.40 per bushel by mid-January. If you grow Corn or Beans and sold out your grain sitting in the bins too early this year then we think this your chance to reach for $1.75 per bushel more on the Corn. Do remember that $1.75 per bushel per Board contract is the equivalent of 17.50 per cwt on Feeders and over 20.00 cwt on Fat Cattle. What better way to cross-hedge your Cattle operation than to own Corn on the Board and do so without futures contract that can cause you sleepless nights and big margin calls. We believe Corn Call Spreads are the way to go and can show you and your family or partners how to do this right here at the Chicago Board of Trade on LaSalle and Jackson St and in our conference room after the Cattle and Corn markets close. By the way, the classic Bull Call Spread cross-hedging of Cattle on the dirt can be used to hedge your Cattle on the dirt. Instead of ‘paid for’ Call Spreads you simply flip it over and buy the Bear Put Spreads on your Fat or Feeder Cattle and have staying power that futures do not afford. At the minimum we would admonish you to avoid selling your remaining Cash Corn in the bin and to avoid doing an HTA with an elevator or ethanol plant that locks you in

Livestock Plus Inc.

There is an old saying ‘Look before you Leap’ and the way you do that is to visit us by phone after cattle and corn markets close here or to call Michelle White here at our Board of Trade office and request an ‘in office visit’ and allow us to educate you on a whiteboard in our conference room on how to trade and acquire Corn holdings on the Board and or how to hedge your Cattle on the dirt without taking unlimited risk on short Cattle Calls of futures. Talk with us and educate yourself and your family operation so you can better duke it out in a global economy that moves fast and all day and all night. Managing your risk on Cattle and Corn operations is not as complicated as you may think. And it is now common knowledge that the global economy is slowing down and this might just hurt some of the demand for U.S. beef.

Again, whether you wake up in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning and wonder about your Cattle and related feed costs now that the Federal Reserve has made it clear that they want more inflation and how you might better hedge one of your ranches’ most valuable assets then call Michelle White at 312-756-0931 and request a 90 day complimentary nightly and weekend Cattle Advisory and or Corn Advisory that is delivered by email. Please have your email address ready when you call her. Again, educate yourself on the risk and rationale of Cattle and Corn cross-hedging in a global economy that packers and China probably understand better than most livestock producers and grain producers. And remember, hedging livestock and feed costs with CBOT or CME instruments still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. n

Current FARMLAND Market

Iowa Land Guy

Stay up to date with the latest market trends in Iowa farmland.

David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer

State Trends ($/Acre)

Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com What a shock June was to the Farmland Market! Major changes are happening right now. To name a few: interest rates leveled out, corn hit a high of $4.73, and we had a market swing of 2000 pts. We have been getting calls to start listing farms for this fall. If all our proposals turn into jobs, we will see a busy fall season with thousands of acres hitting the market. In a time when most buyers were looking to “land a deal;” we have seen some outstanding prices. Results from the 35 auctions (3014 acres) this last month have the average for high quality ground at $8,916/acre and medium quality ground averaging $6,050/acre. Low quality ground is also trending steady at an average of $3,438/acre. Selling quality tillable ground seems to be the best game to be playing. Taking that ground to auction has produced top values.

Iowa Land Guy

UPCOMING AUCTIONS 32 ACTIVE LISTINGS 787 TOTAL 819

FOR SALE

As we look at the data for the first half of the year, we see that we have had 65 less auctions compared to 2018 representing 7,095 less acres. Less farms on the market have kept the prices very stable. Farmland prices have broadened to each end of the spectrum. Working with a land professional, like one of our land agents at Whitaker Marketing Group, has never been more important! They work with buyers and sellers every day. They study the markets and know them very well. If you or someone you know is interested in buying or selling land, reach out to one of our land agents and use them as a trusted resource.

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Iowa Cattlemen pass policy urging USMCA ratification Ratification of the United States Mexico - Canada Agreement is a top priority for the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. This was made evident at the June 10 ICA board meeting where an interim directive was passed unanimously. Partisan politics are delaying ratification of a trade agreement with two of the United States’ top trading partners. Trade with Canada and Mexico adds $70 to the value of each head of cattle in Iowa and is crucial to Iowa’s beef business. The expedited trade promotion authority timeline now allows the President to submit the final implementing legislation to Congress. Once the legislation is submitted to Congress, the US House of Representatives has 60 session days to vote on the legislation. With less than 60 session days in the calendar year, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association recognizes the importance of bipartisan support of USMCA in both Chambers of Congress. “As a young farmer and cattlemen, USMCA is vital to the success of my business,” says Will Longinaker, vice-chair of

the ICA Beef Products committee. “I urge the Iowa Congressional delegation, especially my representative, Congresswoman Axne, to publicly support the trade agreement.” The interim directive reads as follows: United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement WHEREAS international trade currently adds more than $300 to the value of each head of cattle in Iowa, and WHEREAS ongoing trade negotiations have created economic uncertainty for Iowa’s 27,000 beef producers, and WHEREAS the North American Free Trade Agreement led to increased markets for beef in Canada and Mexico and trade with those two countries adds $70 to the value of each head of cattle in Iowa, and WHEREAS the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement would preserve the benefits of NAFTA for Iowa’s cattle producers, and WHEREAS the expedited trade promotion authority process timeline now allows the President to submit the final implementing legislation to Congress, and

WHEREAS upon submission of the implementing legislation, the US House of Representatives has 60 session days to vote on the legislation, and WHEREAS there are less than 60 session days left in this calendar year, and WHEREAS partisan political issues are currently delaying ratification. THEREFORE, BE IT DIRECTED, the Iowa Cattlemen urges bipartisan support of the US-Mexico-Canada agreement from both Chambers of Congress BE IT FURTHER DIRECTED, the Iowa Cattlemen urge the Iowa Congressional delegation, including Representatives Axne, Loebsack, Finkenauer and King, to express support publicly for the US-Mexico-Canada agreement BE IT FURTHER DIRECTED, Iowa Cattlemen urge Congress to vote to ratify the US-Mexico-Canada agreement within the next 25 session days. The ICA board included the interim directive in a letter sent to Iowa’s congressional delegation the same day. The board consists of 44 Iowa cattle producers who represent 9,000 members of Iowa’s beef industry.

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Governor’s Charity Steer Show celebrates 37th year at Iowa State Fair The 2019 Governor’s Charity Steer Show will mark the 37th consecutive year the beef industry has raised funds to help families who utilize the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. This year, the show ring competition takes place Saturday, Aug. 10, at 4:00 p.m., in the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion at the Iowa State Fair. Celebrities will lead 25 steers around the ring, vying for the championship designation, showmanship honors, and the People’s Choice award. Immediately following the competition, the steers will be sold at auction with

proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. Both the show ring event and the auction are open to the general public. Since the Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association began the Governor’s Charity Steer Show in 1983, the effort has raised more than $3.5 million for the Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City Ronald McDonald House Charities. The houses provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children being treated in area hospitals and have served nearly 47,000 families.

Each of the 25 steers are owned by Iowa youth who have cared for the animals and participated in other shows with them. The youth prepare the animals for the show and assist a celebrity in the show ring. Sponsors reimburse the youth for the cost of the animal and choose the celebrity. Youth participating in the 2019 Governor’s Charity Steer Show will also learn additional information about the beef industry on Thursday, and volunteer some time with the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Des Moines on Friday, Aug. 9.

Stop by the Iowa State Fair booth and get your ICA gear! Show your pride in the Iowa cattle industry with some ICA gear. ICA staff will be at the Iowa State Fair Aug. 8-18 in the cattle barn. Stop by and see us and purchase one of our new t-shirts “Salad: What My Food Eats.” You can also pay your 2020 ICA membership and receive a shirt, hat or BBQ

tool for FREE! Limited quantities of the “It’s All Good” and “Beef. It’s What’s For Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner” t-shirts will also be available at the fair. When they are gone, they are gone! Can’t make it to the Iowa State Fair? It’s ok; we’ve made it easier than ever

to show that you’re a cattleman with our online store. Items ordered online can be shipped directly or picked up at our office in Ames. New items are being added ,so check back often! The t-shirts shown are available in youth and adult sizes and multiple colors.

COMMENTARY

For Pete’s Sake by Anthony Peoples

I’ve got an old windmill in my yard that squeaks something fierce. When company comes in, they often times comment on my old squeaky landmark and question how I can tolerate the high-pitched squeaks and whines. Well, the fact of the matter is – I don’t hear it anymore. I’ve listened to it for so long that I’ve become oblivious to any noise it may, or may not make. Apparently, the brake on my old windmill is stuck in some fashion that makes it sing to you when the wind gets ahold of it and turns it just right. The old windmill’s tail has got some holes in it from years of unsupervised youth proving how good of shots they are to their buddies, but the rest of it is a pretty darn good-looking rig. The fan blades are all present and she stands straight, unbent by years of high winds and big trees that may want to fall. All in all, I’d say my old windmill is an 8.5/10. It just likes to talk and whine a little bit too much. The old windmill may remind you of someone you know. Maybe someone you work with, a spouse, or maybe even a child. The old “Squeaky Wheel” metaphor seems to pop into mind as well. There is absolutely no point in this little excerpt, except to remind you that some days it’s ok to sit there and stare at something and appreciate it for what it is and to not hear one single squeak that it makes. Disclaimer: This has NOTHING to do with my wife.

A busy summer would be an understatement and I am sure I’m not the only one that can say that. Summertime is a great time of the year because we get to spend a little more time with family and friends, but we also know how hectic and crazy it can get trying to balance everything. That’s not even considering what wrenches mother nature has thrown our way this spring and summer! My prayers are with all of you that have dealt with and fought the flooding and other weather issues this year. As many of you have already told me, I don’t even know what hectic is until this baby comes along…well we are getting down to crunch time and are just over a month away! You know when formula gets purchased, things are getting real! Tamar and I have done a lot to prepare for the baby but if I said I still wasn’t a slight bit nervous, I’d be lying. One thing I do know, is that he will be blessed with the best grandparents and family and friends anyone could ever ask for! I know that when we need something, all it will take is a phone call. With everything that comes along with this, I can tell you that Tamar and I are both extremely excited to meet our little man and cannot wait to raise him in the greatest industry in the world! I also have a sale the day he’s due, so if anyone wants to be on backup ring staff duty this may be your golden opportunity! God Bless, Cody

Summer has been packed full!!! Treva our two and a half year old made her showing debut at the Grand Finale with her big sister, Taylor!! Now every time we go out to “help” the kids walk pigs she is the first to grab a whip!! #nothingdownaboutit Tucker has his learners permit and I think I just got even more grey hair!!! For some reason the kid thinks he needs to practice driving quite often and I’m not sure my nerves can handle it!! We may be calling Grandpa (Mike) to take him driving!! I have to laugh! Tuck and Tay have been obsessed with playing 1950’s rock music, and were recently devastated after watching the movie LaBamba. They learned the real story of the day the music died. So not only does Tuck make me stop every time we see any OLDer cars and trucks for sale, but the show pigs are all named after 50’s rock. Jackpot barrows were Ritchie, Buddy Holly and Big Bopper, and now county fair pigs have added a whole new level. Peggy Sue, Sherry Baby, Presley, Oh Donna, and the list goes on and on. I have to say it’s always entertaining to hear their ideas! In the midst of the super early mornings and the very late nights, I had kids that were so beyond tired. One morning,

72

Livestock Plus Inc.

after getting to bed at 11pm and back up at 6am, I had a little chat with the kids. We have some of our best talks in the car. I wanted to let them know I really don’t care how they place, I just couldn’t be more proud of all their hard work and passion for an incredible livestock industry that will give them an extended family and friendships for the rest of their lives. Not gonna lie, I got a little choked up. I realized I don’t have many more summers to enjoy watching them do what they truly love. Now that being said, we just got back from getting Taylor five stitches in her finger, plus a tetanus shot. A miscommunication between Tucker and Taylor while washing pigs led to an urgent care visit right before county fair. I’m hoping this is the only county fair injury! We are wishing every single parent or any other support people all the luck and PATIENCE in the world. Remember there is only a limited time we get the absolute most frustrating, exhausting, yet so satisfying feeling of watching our kids show... ENJOY these moments while you can! Exhibitors, have fun and cherish the friendships and extended family in this amazing livestock industry as much as you can, you will miss it so intensely some day. Please take a moment to say a prayer for all our military, their families and our nation. Never forget, IN GOD WE TRUST.
