I think I’m going to rename Iowa QUALITY SERVICE winter weather, especially after the last thirty days; I’m going to call it the Iowa FOR SUPERIOR GENETICS “Yo-Yo” weather. Like a Yo-Yo, you just never know when it’s going to stop, up or down. I’m really amazed at our livestock; they can take sub zero to sixty in a matter of forty-eight hours? I would like to say this is only in Iowa, but I’m sure several other states can claim “YoBOVINE EMBRYO Yo” weather also. Just remember, every day that goes by, is one day closer to spring and lots of spring rain. We are all praying for spring TRANSFER SERVICES rain, please join us. 1010 N. Hancock Street • Lake City, IA 51449 How many of you have experienced a meal at the Mason and Superovulation and collection Diane Fleenor home? I’m just going to say if Mason and Diane Embryo freezing • Embryo transfer stop having sales, I may have to retire. This year Mason, acquired Donor boarding and has been saving some Wagyu steaks for the group to try. He cut it up so that everyone could try it. You have heard the old (712) 464-7407 saying, “give it to Mikey, he’ll eat anything”. Yep, I tried it, I liked Vince Collison, DVM it, and I also liked the certified Angus that chased it. Mason does Jane Collison, DVM the grilling and seasoning to a perfection. When I asked about his seasoning and grilling, he said he would tell us everything about Tim Collison, DVM the preparation and grilling, but then he would have to shoot us all. Well, that’s fine with me and the rest of the crew, we will let him be the chef and the rest of us can enjoy a few adult beverages and harass him as he does his thing. Just for the record, this is a team effort. Diane and her crew can put together the most awesome side dishes; especially Diane’s cheesy potatoes, for the event. The big thing is the atmosphere with ol’ Mason and his wonderful wife Diane, to watch these two in action is just amazing. Their playful squabbling and bickering is the greatest. Thanks a bunch Mason and Diane! It is always a great time. Also, thanks to all the neighbor’s that help with the meal and folks that dine with us, the stories get pretty wild on some of their Montana trips. Folks join us for this meal and entertainment from Ohio to Montana. A great time was had by all! In closing, I would like to ask that we all pray for our country. I also want to pray for our Military and their families. Lord watch over us.

COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead for Cattle Markets by Michael Seek Fox Group at the Board of Trade

Less than 3 weeks ago the Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time since year 2018. The top dogs at the Fed have been saying they have to raise rates and will continue to do due to inflation. The shocking part of this backdrop is that the Fed Chairman was in denial that inflation was anything but transitory and said as much month after month after month. It took Crude Oil going from 65 a barrel to 130 per barrel for the Fed Chairman to figure out inflation may be a problem. Dad used to say ‘you buy em books, send em’ to school, and they eat the covers off the books’. This certainly describes the hilarious attempt at monetary policy management by the Federal Reserve. So where do we go from here? Well, consider that the Cattle and Corn business now has both inflation and a new war in Europe to deal with. Throw in another drought this year and you don’t have a ‘one-two punch and you’re out’ but rather you have a ‘one-two-three punch thrown by the likes of Mike Tyson’ and someone is going to the mat and not getting off of it. Who might that someone be? Cattle producers who do not contain cost inputs fast. Consider that 10 years ago the price of Corn traded in the vicinity of 8.50 per bushel. New crop is now in the 6.50 per bushel area. Now add in the inflation and the potential loss of Ukraine corn production and the droughts and you have a powerful recipe for 9.00 to 10.00 per bushel on Corn. Sound ridiculous? Take a look at the wheat chart below to see a 4 dollar per bushel move in less than one week.

Most people who have dealt with beef cows at calving time have occasionally had to deal with a weak, dopey calf. These calves may be unable to stand or have difficulty standing without assistance. They have poor muscle tone and seem to have no idea where to put their feet or how to stand or move. Most of them seem dopey and are unable to suckle, even when given a bottle or having a teat placed in their mouths. These “dummy calves,” also called “weak calves,” require a great deal of care and attention to get through the first few days of life and are often a major inconvenience at a busy time of year. A variety of conditions can make a newborn calf appear weak, including selenium deficiency, hypothermia, infectious disease and trauma, such as being stepped or laid on. Weak calf syndrome has also been associated with cows in poor body condition in late pregnancy that are being fed inadequate protein or energy. However, a common cause for the weak “dummy calf” is a condition known as acidosis. It refers to a drop in the pH of the blood, which can be triggered by a lack of oxygen that might occur during a difficult calving. Calves under normal calving conditions go through a transition in how their oxygen is supplied. The oxygen supply to the calf from the placenta stops during delivery, which results in a temporary increase in carbon dioxide in the bloodstream. This is a trigger for the calf to start breathing on its own. The act of breathing allows the calf to expel the carbon dioxide from the blood and begin to restore normal oxygen levels. However, this process can be delayed when calving is prolonged or difficult. The carbon dioxide levels may rise in the blood without the calf being able to “blow off” the carbon dioxide by breathing. The drop in blood oxygen and high levels of carbon dioxide create a severe drop in the pH of the bloodstream, which is known as “respiratory acidosis.” The major clinical effect of acidosis is severe depression or weakness. These calves often cannot stand and many cannot even roll up onto their chests into sternal recumbency on their own. A Scottish study used the time from birth until the calf was able to get itself into sternal recumbency as an indicator that a calf might be suffering from acidosis. "Dummy" continued on pg 14

"Dummy" continued from pg 12 Normal calves will usually roll onto their chest within the first few minutes after birth, while calves suffering from acidosis tend to take more than 15 minutes to get into sternal recumbency. It’s an easy diagnostic test that can help identify calves that might need further attention. The weak newborn calf is less likely to suck, is often unable to stand and therefore is at greater risk of suffering from hypothermia in cold weather, of being stepped or laid on or of not getting adequate colostrum and succumbing to infectious diseases such as scours. Lying down for long periods makes these calves more susceptible to navel infections and other complications. Calves with severe acidosis can appear to be in a coma or stupor and eventually die. To prevent this from occurring, producers should use all of the methods for preventing dystocia, such as bull selection, adequate nutrition and growth for replacement heifers and early intervention in any dystocia cases. If the occasional case does occur, producers should make sure they are truly dealing with acidosis. Work with a veterinarian to ensure that these calves are not suffering from an infectious disease, selenium deficiency or another condition that may mimic the clinical syndrome of acidosis. Producers who are dealing with a difficult calving should try to get the calf breathing as soon as possible. Don’t hang calves upside down after calving to drain fluid from their lungs. Most of the fluid that comes out is from their digestive tract, and the pressure of the abdominal organs makes it more difficult to breathe when the calf is hanging upside down. Place the calf in sternal recumbency and stimulate breathing by rubbing the calf, stimulating the nostril with a piece of straw or pouring a small amount of cold water on the calf’s head. Consider using a breathing bag, which is also called an Ambu bag, to help the calf start breathing sooner. These manual respirators, which can be bought for calves, are a self-inflating ventilation bag with a mask that fits over the calf’s nose and mouth. Get a lesson from a veterinarian on how to use an Ambu bag on calves. Veterinarians might also administer oxygen in their clinics. Once breathing is established, make sure these calves are tubed with colostrum and protected from hypothermia. Producers who are dealing with severe acidosis may want to ask their veterinarian to give an intravenous solution containing sodium bicarbonate to help correct pH levels in the blood. Many oral electrolyte solutions also contain sodium bicarbonate, but it isn’t clear that oral electrolytes are able to correct the severe acidosis that sometimes occurs after a difficult birth. Producers shouldn’t have to deal with a lot of these cases, but if clusters occur, ask a veterinarian to make an accurate diagnosis and rule out other conditions. Prompt action following prolonged calving should help improve the survival rate of these calves and reduce the incidence of infectious diseases. n For Hereford information and questions regarding the American Hereford Association, contact:

Hats Off by

Bottomless Feed Bunk

Austin Sorensen

Wow! I hope everyone has been blessed with this beautiful weather we have been having in southern Iowa here at the end of March! It is hard to believe April 1st is here! The past few Bull Panel months in my articles, I’ve been talking about family dynamics in the operation and wanted to tie in a couple more important people and that would be my grandmother and grandfather in-law. In terms of cow care, Fritz is extremely intelligent and one that I’ve learned a bunch from. I always enjoy hearing when I’m on the road that a cow was calving and he is sitting down in his truck watching the whole thing keeping an eye on them. He is also very into land management from weed control to conservation practices. He is truly a person a guy could learn a lot from! Lois is a world class cook and • Use as calving pens, fence, swinging gates, or anywhere corral panesl are used one thing we can always bank • The 10’ gates swing 360 degrees and fold flat against either side of the mainframe • Tires will easily break free from any frozen surface on is when we are working cows • Models range from 20’ to 60’ and make up to four calving pens with one freestanding gate on the Weis farm, there will be a world class meal after and she’s going to be out moving cattle around with you ahead of time! She’s also probably the number Designed by a cattleman in Iowa, one wrangler. If we are on the the EnduraGate makes life easier road and a cow is out at home, for both the cow/calf operation as well as the feedyard! she’s the first to be out putting 2561 175th STreet, Nemaha, IA 50567 them in. www.coonrivergatecompany.com I’ve been very fortunate to have been able to meet and become friends with two great people like Fritz and Lois. They have always treated me like family. They have definitely blessed our lives with opportunities and I always enjoy the opportunity to work with and talk cattle OPEN with them! ANGUS BULLS ANGUS HEIFERS This month, my hat goes off to my wife’s awesome performance tested grandparents and all the grandparents out there still involved SELECT GROUP of & ready to go! in their family operations. As always, don’t hesitate to COW/CALF PAIRS give me a call if I can assist you in any of your livestock marketing or purchasing needs! IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

ICA Cattle Producer Forums a success We recently wrapped up our three Cattle Producer Forum events, and reached around 170 producers in the Carroll, Palo Alto and Fayette County areas. Every year at the forums we cover a timely topic for producers and offer a market outlook. These events offer great networking and educational opportunities at no cost. On the docket this year, topics included: livestock risk protection options, cattle market situation and outlook, and cow nutrition considerations in preparation for breeding. Tim Christensen, farm specialist for Iowa State University (ISU) Extension, gave an introduction to Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) and Livestock Gross Margin Protection (LGM) options available to producers. In his presentation, he noted that when LRP is used on unborn calves, feeder cattle, fed cattle and other livestock species it can protect against declining market prices whereas LGM protects against loss of gross margin. Additionally, he spoke about how initially when these

products came out in 2003 the process was not as user-friendly as it is today, therefore are very under utilized. Many resources including Tim’s contact information, where to find an approved risk management agency agent, fact sheets and cost estimator tools can be found on the ISU Ag Decision Maker website. The market outlook always tends to peak an interest from producers, a topic that is frequently on the minds of producers. Two representatives from CattleFax joined to share their knowledge with producers. Folks in attendance were able to learn more about the cattle market cycle, production trends, industry profitability and much more. It may be hard to think forward to the next breeding cycle when calves are just beginning to drop. However, there are some factors to keep in mind that could potentially affect your next calf crop. Garland Dahlke, research scientist at the Iowa Beef Center, presented ways to pre-

pare for the next round of calving in your operation after a drought year and some factors to take into consideration beyond body condition score. This might include making pH modifications in your ration or taking a deeper look at the nutritional value of the forage “fill ins” you may typically add. These events were free to attend, thanks to the generous support of vendors and sponsors. When choosing to do business, we encourage you to do so with those who support your whole operation!

SEE YOU THIS SUMMER!

Looking forward, we are working on plans for the 2022 series of BeefMeets this June. Stay tuned to ICA communications for more information on topics, speakers and locations! BeefMeets are vital to the policy process and making sure your association is completely informed on the grassroots level.

Thank you sponsors and vendors

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Join Youth Beef Team Are you interested in learning more about the beef industry, meeting new friends, winning prizes andhaving fun? Then you need to join our Youth Beef Team (YBT)! The Youth Beef Team began in 1994 as a way to include youth in the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and is sponsored by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation. It is the flagship program that we offer to grow future beef industry leaders. Vital issues face the beef industry today. Every student encounters information in school and from the media on food safety, animal rights, the environment and nutrition. Our goal is to equip young cattlemen and women with information they need to speak out positively for the beef industry, pointing out the advantages beef offers to our health, environment and economy. Youth Beef Team is open to junior high

and high school age kids who are interested and excited to promote the beef industry. After their training, members are encouraged to go out and promote beef through presentations, farm and school tours, and editorials throughout their community and surrounding communities. These activities can be done as individuals or groups. Members earn points for their activities based on the type of activity and the people reached. At the end of the year, members are awarded prizes for the various levels of points attained and are recognized at a breakfast at the Iowa State Fair. Our award year began August 1, 2021 and will end July 30, 2022 with our awards breakfast on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 9:30 am in the Penningroth Sale Arena on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. In order to receive an award, youth must complete at least five activities throughout the year.

In addition to yearly awards, senior Youth Beef Team members are eligible to compete for up to three $2,000 scholarships in the spring. Seniors submit an application, participate in a personal interview and give a presentation to a panel of judges. We will be offering Youth Beef Team trainings this coming June at the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association’s regional BeefMeets. Look for those dates and locations later this spring. If you are interested in scheduling a training for your area, please contact Mary Greiman at mary@iacattlemen.org or call 641-425-1533. Visit www.iowacattlemensfoundation.org for more information about Youth Beef Team, as well as all our activities.

Using the Cattlemen Care logo Spring is a good time to review the guidelines for using the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation’s (ICF) Cattlemen Care logo. Proper use of the ICF Servicemark minimizes the likelihood that the mark will become generic, or interpreted as abandoned by its rightful owner. Proper use also strengthens the servicemark/trademark registrations, and overcomes defenses raised in trademark litigation. The most compelling point to remember is that trademark rights are based upon use. For this reason alone, we will want to use it properly, and will want others to do so as well. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation owns and oversees the servicemark/ trademark for the Cattlemen Care logo and

name. We have developed this trademark usage policy: Permission from the ICF is required to use the Cattlemen Care or the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation name or logo as part of any project, product, service, domain or company name. We will grant permission to use the Cattlemen Care and/or ICF name and logo for projects that meet the following criteria: • The primary purpose of your project is to promote the caring nature of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation, its efforts or its affiliates, or • Your project is non-commercial in nature (it can make money to cover its costs or contribute to non-profit entities,

but it cannot be run as a for-profit project or business). If your project meets these criteria, you will be permitted to use the Cattlemen Care name and logo to promote your project as long as ICF has given you permission to do so. Please note that it is not the goal of this policy to limit commercial activity if the Cattlemen Care logo or words are being displayed. When in doubt about your use of the Cattlemen Care or Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation name or logo, please contact the Foundation for clarification.

THE Iowa Land Guy TEAM

MARCH 2022

Stay up to date with the latest market trends in Iowa farmland.

David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer

Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com • 515-460-8585 Lots of Moving Parts! March is here and we are gearing up for planting season. The past month has had a lot of moving parts. Iowa sold more acres in February of 2022 than we did in 2021 and that was a high year. Since January I have been watching the farmland prices of all companies to get the pulse of what was going to happen in 2022. We have seen a steady to stronger Farmland Market. With the conflict in Ukraine, we have seen the commodity prices increase. I have said it before that “markets are emotion”. When the market is good the emotion and tenor is good. With the conflict we will begin to see some uncertainty that will cause an emotional rollercoaster. We will be watching to see how China reacts as well as watching the euro markets.

Iowa Land Guy Call today to see what your farm is worth and get a free land valuation! 515-460-8585

We have more and more people calling that are heirs to farmland that want to capitalize on the market trends we are seeing. Get ready for more land to break loose and get your purchasing power in order. There is 35.7 million acres in Iowa. It is estimated that 10% of land changes over to a new owner each year. With the Baby Boomer generation starting to transition. There will be one of the largest transitions of wealth unfolding.

I wish I had a crystal ball to tell you all what farmland is going to do regarding prices, but I do not. Here are the Facts:

• We have heirs getting farther removed from the farm. • We have a transitioning generation. • We have high commodity prices. • We have increased risk for all farmers (Money is made in the margins!). • We have increasing interest rates (However, they are still historically low). • We have a ton of equity in the currently owned farmland. • We have investors hedging against inflation and buying farmland. • We have investors trading ground and a timeline to utilize their 1031 like kind exchange. • We have increasing fuel prices and a government that may make exceptions on ethanol. • We have profit in 2021 for most farmers. • We have a foreign conflict that is affecting the bread basket of Europe . • We have a market that hinges on foreign trade. • We have increased inputs that will narrow the margin for 2022.

April 2022

The Beginning: I remember the frustration lifting the back leg of my last AI calf of the 2021 calving season and finding another bull, “Bankers Approval” I had five units of Bankroll left in my tank from the prior year and bred some of my top cows to him in hopes of having some replacement females. However, I went 5 for 5 on bull calves! Bankers Approval was born unassisted to a 2nd calf heifer “MEK Miss Francis 801F.” To be honest, I did not pay much attention to him and left the gate open for him to venture outside the barn lot with his mother. The next night I came home from work and fed hay and finally realized I had a special animal running around. His attitude and presence were just like all the great ones! I kept checking my AI book over and over in disbelief he was a Purebred Simmental. The hair, foot size, and look from day one was unbelievable. Breeding History The real story began in 2012 on a trip to Werning’s in South Dakota. I found a bull that I felt would be a great Herd Sire to build excellent percentage cattle. He was huge footed, great haired, with a phenomenal hip & tailhead. “W/C High Regard 973Y” was a ½ blood High Regard son out of a KCF Bennett Architect M299 x Alberda Traveler 416 Angus Cow. This bull went on to sire more replacement heifers and top-notch feeder cattle than any bull I ever owned. He sired the type of cattle that did not require extra care and could survive harsh extreme conditions. The following year I went to Bruhn’s sale in Iowa and found a ½ blood cow that had extreme power and size, “GLS Miss Answer X60”. GLS Miss Answer X60 was in the Champion Simmental Percentage Pen in Denver as a calf. I loved the fact X60 was a reverse half-blood being sired by SP The Answer and out of a Dream On Purebred cow. GLS Miss Answer X60 combined two of the heavy weights of their respective breeds with SAV Final Answer and Dream On. In 2015, 973Y bull was a four-year-old and ready for heavy service. 973Y covered over 50 cows that year in under 60 days. I reaped the benefits in 2016 having several fantastic calves. Miss Answer X60 knocked it out of the park that year with a heifer, “MEK Miss Georgia 602D.” 602D is exactly what I envisioned matching 973Y and X60. The Simmental and Angus genetics behind 602D are legends of their respective breeds. As a yearling I bred 602D to Blaze of Glory and the following spring of 2018 she had a beautiful heifer, “MEK Miss Francis 801F” 801F is the ¾ blood young mother of Bankers Approval. She raised a tremendous angus sired replacement heifer for her first calf and Banker Approval is her second calf. 801F is the definition of a true working cow. She possesses a perfect udder and ideal teat size to go along with perfect feet and legs. Bankers Approval’s sire, Bankroll, needs no introduction to the breed… Bull Development The most intriguing part about Bankers Approval is the cow history

and years of development to produce a unique animal like him! I am for modern technology and science to advance your herd. However, it can become costly, and steps can be skipped to develop the right kind of cattle it takes to thrive in a variety of environments. I have a feeling true ranchers can testify and understand what I am talking about. Every cow mentioned in the breeding history survived the true test of what it takes to become cow in range-like conditions. Every cow bred back each year and received no extra feed outside of fescue grass. Bankers Approval is designed and made for the long haul. He had tremendous hair as a calf and slicked off beautiful during the summer grazing months. Bankers Approval was weaned on Labor Day and has only received a modest ration & fed once daily. Prior to weaning he received no feed outside of mama’s milk and green grass. My partner Jeff Jochimsen has managed this bull perfectly and has played a major part on developing this bull. Jeff and I are like minded on the direction this bull can take the breed. As you can see, no steps were skipped to provide years of consistent breeding to come up with this animal. I am not big on calling every cow a donor or promoting AI Sires. Very few can pass the real test in the pasture and get to that point. The maternal power and proven breeding behind this bull have passed the test. That’s why we are confident in Bankers Approval ability to breed with true consistency!

As I write my article, the kids are all on spring break for the week! I’m not sure Taylor and I should have started our closet clean out on Facebook and Instagram. It is adding a very stressful element to my already stressful deadline for LPI! SPRING CLEANING!! What a crazy month we’ve had so far! As many of you know my son, Tucker, is very involved in his FFA Chapter. Recently, he applied for a district officer position in the South Central District of Iowa. So when he attended District Convention for our area he not only had to give a speech in front of delegates for the treasurer position, he also advanced to districts in the Job Interview Contest. The week preceding districts was pretty intense. Meanwhile, we had scheduled ear tube surgery and an adenoidectomy for Treva on the following Monday. We had asked Taylor to stay home with her sister during FFA Districts. After Tucker was named SC District Treasurer, we also learned he would advance to State FFA Convention in the Job Interview Contest and Tuck had a meeting immediately following the ceremony. We knew we might get some thunder storms that day but we were not prepared to be 45 min away from the girls when our phone alarms started going off, letting us know tornados had touched down and over 100 mph winds would be hitting our area. So, instead of celebrating with Tucker, we had our phones out with weather app radar up listening to our local radio station trying to skirt around the worst of the storm to get home to the girls. Golf ball and baseball sized hail covered our little town with back and side windows smashed out of so many cars and horrible damage to siding and roofs of homes. Matt’s truck windshield looks like someone just repeatedly threw baseballs at it. In the midst of all the craziness we called Taylor, so she got Treva up from her nap and they were in the basement, thank goodness! Taylor at one point said she thought we were under attack and ventured upstairs to take a peek (hail storm). We laughed and told her, next time just stay in the basement! Just so grateful, God held us all in His hands that day! I hope everyone is enjoying SPRING! Please continue to keep our military and our country in your constant prayers. God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661-900-6004 livestockplusinc.com heidi@livestockplusinc.com
