Greetings, How many of ya are ready for spring? I can tell you I’m darn sure ready. I guess our complaint level can’t be too high this winter, it’s tough but could have been worse.

I took off for a sale a day early, in anticipation of making a couple of herd visits on the way. I made the first herd visit and I now have two Red Angus heifers to add to my collection of Hereford, Angus, and Simmental, in my cow herd of 10.

I also needed to have something to write about this month, so I was in search of a steak house. On a recommendation from a friend, I landed at the Carrollton Inn in Carroll, Iowa. It was perfectly in line to get to my next sale. The Carrollton Motel in

Carroll has Baratta’s Steak House attached. Life is good! I called Dixie and she was ok with the Red Angus heifers, went to the steak house and the filet was deadly.

Things are falling into place nicely.

The steak house and its adult beverages were awesome. Jack Daniel’s was on top of his game that night. Adam, my bartender/ waiter was perfect. My order was placed and served with perfect timing. My 6oz filet was cooked to a perfection by Joey. For me, a 6oz steak is darned hard to grill because of size, but Joey, you did it perfectly. Then to add to the filet, garlic mashed potatoes, green beans with bacon and pearl onions, all topped with garlic butter sauce. Deadly, just pure deadly. Carrollton Inn, a new one of my favorite places to stay.

Baratta’s Steakhouse is highly recommended by this ol’ boy.

As the old saying goes, I killed a whole bunch of birds with one stone today, herd visits, cattle placement, great steaks, Jack Daniels. Top That!

Thank You Lord for our first responders, our health care workers, law enforcement, and a special Thank You to our military and their families for my freedom.

Pray for our country’s leaders, in hopes that they make at least some good discissions.

COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead for Cattle Markets

by Michael Seek Fox Group at the Board of Trade

The Federal Reserve finally came clean two weeks ago on this last Fed meeting and stopped using the word ‘transitory’, meaning they now see inflation as more than a ‘transitory event’ and even increased expectations of inflation to move to 2.4% from 1.8% and for Gross Domestic Product to move from 4.2% to 6.50%. Why is this important to folks in the livestock business? Simple really. The input costs for livestock operations is likely to accelerate and stay high for 18 to 24 months and then as the Fed starts raising rates quickly at that time the pressure on livestock input pricing should back off and make hedging thereof less important.

However, do not be deceived. The trillions of dollars that the liberal ‘powers that be’ want to give away will come at great cost and while the next 18 to 24 months may yield nicely higher prices on your livestock sales, yet the inevitable popping of the debt bubble will likely cause a financial systemic collapse that sends financial markets and ag land values down the drain. Therefore, you’ll want to learn how to sleep with one eye open over the next year to get ready for trouble on all fronts.

You’ll recall we’ve admonished you to watch and understand the ‘3’C’s, that is the Cattle, Crude and Copper.

You now want to make that the ‘4’C’s, meaning Cattle, Crude, Copper and Corn. The Corn market will have to deal with droughts, massive China buying now that Trump is out of their hair, and early frosts’ and inflation. Remember, this new decade we are in is likely the 10-year period that sees sunspot activity create increased interference with magnetic instruments on the surface of the earth and thus increase the probability of drought and also early freezing early autumn.

Bottom line? It will be important for livestock operations to be in and out of Corn depending on feed needs and or needs to move excess Corn over the elevators and ethanol plants.

operations since it has created confusion about participation at the sale barn and confusion on when to hedge your Cattle already on the dirt. The recent ‘economic stimulus checks’ have jolted up many stocks of retailers such as Macy’s and Nordstrom and Target and so why would we not expect Texas Roadhouse and Outback to benefit from the ‘free money’ given to folks as folks pile back into the Texas Roadhouse once a week. The charts below are compelling:

Suffice it to say that hedging your family and ranch interests from Corn to Cattle may be critical for 18 to 24 months. Few hard-working old-fashioned capitalists here in the Midwest can wrap their mind around the idea of socialistic powers and policies getting a foothold in the United States of America. It could happen so it may be wise to get out in front of uncertain markets domestically and internationally.

Managing Heifers to Improve Longevity

Develop the best possible conception rate for replacement heifers BROOKINGS, S.D. — Management strategies to develop the best possible conception rate for replacement heifers are critical to improve longevity in the herd. Hence the ultimate goal is the same: getting the heifers bred – and preferably early in the breeding season.

“Developing or purchasing replacement heifers is a huge investment and potential financial returns depend on future calf production,” explained Julie Walker, Professor & SDSU Extension Beef Specialist.

Walker points to research which indicates it takes net revenue from approximately six calves to cover the development and production cost of each replacement heifer.

What the research says about time of calving: Research conducted at USDA-Meat Animal Research Center (USDA MARC) and with South Dakota herds showed that heifers who calved in the first 21 days had greater longevity and increased weaning weight compared to heifers that calved in the second 21-day period or later.

The South Dakota study looked at 2,195 heifers who calved in the first 21-day period. These heifers had increased longevity (5.1 years compared to 3.9 years).

The USDA MARC longevity data resulted in 8.2 years for heifers calving in the first calving period; 7.6 years for those calving in the second calving period and 7.2 years for heifers that calved in the last portion of the calving season.

In addition, the study reported improved weaning weights through the sixth calf born for the heifers that calved in the first calving period.

What the research says about nutritional development: It has been reported numerous times that heifers developed in a drylot and turned out to grass immediately following breeding, have fewer pregnancies in the first 21 days.

“A possible reason is a negative plane of nutrition due to re-learning grazing skills,” Walker said.

Walker points to research conducted at the Antelope Research Station, which reported that when heifers were moved from drylot to range, they lost weight (3.5 pounds per day) during the first week; whereas, range-developed heifers gained weight (2 pounds per day).

However, after 27 days of grazing, there was no difference in average daily gain between heifers developed in a drylot and

heifers developed on forage.

“So, when observing heifers we may not notice this short period of negative energy; however, it can impact conception rates especially the early conceptions,” Walker said.

What the research says about activity level: A second possible reason in decreased pregnancy rates, may be increased activity level.

Walker discusses an experiment conducted by SDSU researchers on 69 drylot developed heifers allotted to one of two treatments: 1) Heifers remained in the drylot; or 2) Heifers were moved to graze spring forage for 42 days prior to breeding.

Daily activity was measured by pedometers (steps per day).

Heifers that were grazing spring forage took more steps per day compared to heifers in the drylot. However, following being moved to spring pasture, heifers that remained in the drylot increased activity compared to those with previous experience grazing spring forage.

“This is significant because energy requirements increase with activity,” Walker said.

Other Considerations The question becomes, what management strategies can help improve conception rates and promote heifers conceiving earlier in the breeding season?

“First if your heifer system is working, there is no reason to change,” Walker said.

However, if a livestock producer wants to see an improvement in early-season heifer conception rates below are a few management strategies to review.

Body condition score: Heifers should be in a body condition score of 5 or 6 and range between 55 to 65 percent of their mature weight.

Conception rates are impacted by heifers that are over or under-conditioned.

Reduce changes in diet immediately following breeding: Heifers can be kept in the drylot and fed a similar diet or heifers can be adapted to pasture prior to the breeding season.

The specific number of days that heifers should be on pasture prior to the breeding season is unknown. However, heifers should be on a positive plane of nutrition at the start of the breeding season.

Estrous synchronization: Estrous synchronization will group heifers to express estrus within a similar window of time as well as allow some heifers to express estrus earlier.

Estrous synchronization can be completed with artificial insemination or natural service.

ICA Policy Priorities 2021 CATTLE MARKETING

ICA is committed to improving price discovery and providing transparency for all producers across the beef belt. To advance these priorities, ICA will continue to: • Lead minimum cash trade legislative efforts at the federal level; • Work with U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) AMS to report next day cattle weights; • Advocate for the elimination of the CME’s discount on cattle delivered to Worthing, S.D.; and • Support opportunities to grow negotiated trade in all major cattle feeding regions.

ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATION

As the original stewards of the land, cattle producers have proven their dedication to protecting and preserving our natural resources. ICA affirms this longstanding commitment, and will continue to: • Participate in USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service State Technical Committee meetings; • Engage with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; • Encourage voluntary, evidence-based conservation practices to improve soil health, reduce nutrient escape and improve water quality; • Promote the value of incorporating managed livestock grazing on more acres throughout the state; and • Combat burdensome overreach at the local, state and federal levels with regard to regulating livestock barns, changes to the Master Matrix and county-specific ordinances.

REGULATORY ACTION Transportation

Livestock haulers are an integral part of the beef supply chain.

Current federal law ignores the need for timely and safe livestock hauling. ICA will continue to work with partners to provide a permanent legislative fix to Hours of Service rules. ICA also supports Electronic Logging Device exemptions for livestock haulers.

Interstate highway weight limits remain an issue for livestock haulers traveling through Iowa. We will look for opportunities to ease regulatory burden and provide flexibility to livestock haulers.

ICA opposes the repeal and replacement of the Navigable Waters Protection Rule with any iteration of the heavy-handed 2015 Waters of the U.S. regulation.

Animal Disease Traceability

ICA recognizes the importance of a robust animal disease traceability system. We believe the primary purpose of an animal disease traceability system is to allow state and federal animal health officials, and the cattle industry as a whole, to efficiently and effectively respond to an animal disease outbreak in a timely manner. However, the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has been unable to provide certainty surrounding data management, confidentiality and cost for the cattle industry.

ICA opposes the USDA APHIS proposed timeline for implementation by January 1, 2023.

ICA encourages voluntary traceability efforts through the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and U.S. CattleTrace.

Tax Policy

Agriculture is a key economic driver in Iowa’s state economy.

The beef cattle industry alone generates approximately $4 billion in cash receipts in Iowa. We know firsthand how capital intensive agriculture, specifically raising cattle, can be. We also know that many cattle producers care about sharing their farm legacy with the next generation.

ICA supports efforts to reduce capital gains taxes on farmland and livestock, and encourages the full repeal of the estate tax. ICA opposes any proposals to increase the gift or estate tax liability of farmers and ranchers or eliminate stepped-up basis.

ICA supports opportunities to assist the next generation of cattle producers, to include the use of tax credits.

Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program Meets for February Session The purpose of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program (YCLP) is to train future leaders of Iowa’s cattle industry. The program is an initial opportunity to be more active in the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, which begins with education on the structure and function of the organization. Participants undergo training and educational seminars to enhance their communications skills, strengthen their awareness of the legislative process, and diversify their knowledge of the Iowa and U.S. beef cattle industries.

One of the primary goals of the Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program (YCLP) is to help develop the skills, talents, and leadership qualities of the next generation of cattle producers. These participants are the future of our beef business, building upon the legacy of Iowa’s cattle industry.

On February 17, the class met at Voss Angus in Dexter for leadership training with Rachel Kagay. Together, we discussed talents, values, and the importance of devel-

oping a clear vision as individuals and for organizations in the future. Brent and Teresa Voss also shared their story and how they’ve worked to build their own ‘American dream.’ Jennifer Carrico then introduced the class to the Carcass Challenge, Iowa’s premier fed-beef competition. The day was rounded out with a visit to Wilkerson Farms in Linden. Chad and Amy Wilkerson provided a tour featuring hoop barns utilized for their confinement calving and recipient cow operation.

The next day, the class met with Secretary Naig and Dr. Kaisand via Zoom. Secretary Naig provided an Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) update, which included a review of the following state-level priorities: foreign animal disease preparedness and response, climate and conservation, a value-added agriculture grant program, and renewable fuels. Sec. Naig affirmed his commitment to working with agency officials and industry organizations to limit burdensome regu-

latory changes, specifically with regard to water, tax policy, and carbon markets, that would devastate Iowa agriculture and the beef industry.

Dr. Kaisand shared his efforts on building a robust foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccination plan for the state. He emphasized the importance of registering farms with the Iowa Premises Identification Program to ensure the Department is able to effectively and efficiently inform producers across the state in the event of an outbreak. Finally, as a beef producer himself, Dr. Kaisand encouraged the YCLP participants to practice biosecurity each and every day on the farm.

Lefty’s Logic

Spring is officially here and it could not have come any sooner.

It was my second winter back in Wisconsin and boy, was it a hard one. As mild as December was, January and February made up for it ten fold. I’m not quite sure which was worse, the record snow fall or the record days below zero. I was always told it does not snow when it is really cold, well that definitely was not the case this year. It seemed like it snowed every day it was below zero.

Then came March, and it looks like the old saying is going to hold true, come in like a lamb go out like a lion. You could not have asked for a better start to the month. We had a perfect spring thaw. It was nice and slow allowing all that snow to soak in instead of running off into the ditches and creeks. And now the grass is even starting to green up.

As long as this winter has been, the spring bull season has been flying by. Between the up swing in grain prices and all the optimism in agriculture, the bull sales have been great. We appreciate the opportunity we’ve had to work with our customers on many successful sales and look forward to assisting you with any livestock marketing needs in the future!

impacts on health, especially young calves. Mud clings to hair coats and makes it more difficult for the animal to regulate body temperatures, especially if nighttime temperatures dip below freezing. Pathogens also thrive in these conditions, creating continual exposure to calves. This occurs both directly because of the poor environment and indirectly when nursing from contaminated udders. Left unmanaged, excessive mud can also cause foot injuries and outbreaks of foot rot.

Now that we’re entering the spring thaw and no longer have access to poor man’s concrete, here are four tips to dealing with the mud that remains.

Destock the area. Strive to increase head space and move breeding stock and pairs more frequently to help manage mud depth. Producers commonly want to turn cows out on pasture to avoid dealing with mud this time of year. However, this significantly hinders forage production.

I hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather!! It sure has been nice at our farm. We’ve actually been celebrating our oldest, Tucker, who is now preparing to give the FFA Creed at the state level in April. There have been a handful of people that we are sure grateful for, that have given of their time and expertise to help him advance from sub-districts and the district level. I know it’s a mission statement that Tucker sure believes in, so that also helps. We KNOW we have many to thank for his advancement.

My thoughts this month will look a little different, as I will include my “barn story” that I wrote for my dear friend, Katie Hoge. I am absolutely in love with the movement she has been sharing on social media through Hoge Livestock!

Katie is that friend that I can pick right back up with, like we never missed a day apart! She is one of the kindest, most thoughtful friends I have had the pleasure of having in my life! That being Katie Hoge said, please travel safe this spring and continue to keep our military and nation in your prayers!

The World Needs More Barns

My barn story began in the same barn that my father and his siblings’ barn story took place. My father gave my siblings and me some great stories from my grandparent’s barn.

Working on our show heifers all year provided for some funny stories, as well as stories of hard work and emotional highs and lows. It has given us a closeness and a family loyalty that I don’t believe we could have gotten by any other means.

The frozen fingertips from Dad always saying, “stimulate hair follicles” to having Grandma at the door waving us inside for a snack as soon as Dad left the driveway. Memories from that barn are my closest held.

When my husband, Matt, and I introduced our older kids, Tucker and Taylor, to showing pigs, I don’t think my heart could have been happier. Growing up with show stock, and knowing our kids would have similar barn experiences as Matt and myself, makes me so incredibly grateful.

Our kids have the privilege of being the fourth generation on their grandparent’s farm to raise livestock. This red barn is a little different from the Sorensen barn that I grew up in, but no matter the species of livestock, it still has the same incredible benefits! Now, our youngest, Treva, has the benefit of her older brother and sister guiding her through raising and showing livestock, as well as learning some two-step moves for dancing at Stockman’s, and I’m hoping the fun memories outweigh the inevitable barn fights.

I watch my kids endure the same hard work and the giving of their hearts to the hogs they have chosen, as I did with our cattle. The loyalty to their family and friends, as well as the work ethic that I continue to be in awe of; especially when the kids choose to be in the barn over other opportunities that come their way. It all adds to their character.

The kids want to be more a part of decisions made on breeding, farrowing, weaning, and prepping for the sale of the show pigs they have helped raise. I also see the heartbreaking moments, that I want to fix, but realize it’s just making them stronger and more reliable young people in all aspects of their

lives. Our kids thrive by learning as much as they can about our industry, as well as serving on various boards and clubs. The love, the heartache, the fun they have starting in this little red barn is the most incredible learning experience we can give our kids....
