1. Yardley Bulls have eye appeal and conformation to sire calves that will top the market with performance and growth to push down the scales. Feeders want Yardley sired calves because of their eye appeal and gainability 2. Their heifer calves will be the best cows that you have ever owned. 3. These bulls are grown in big lots where they get plenty of excercise. They winter mostly on hay so they can live on grass. Many buyers tell us they like our bulls because they, “don’t have to pamper them.” Performance comes from their ability to convert forage. 4. Our focus has always been on our maternal traits and cow families. We have AI’d for 53 years selecting the best bulls we can find, it shows in these bulls. They are solid footed, big topped, stout, and good looking. Selection emphasis is placed on fleshing ability and performance to excel on the range, in the pasture, and feedlot. 5. Our cattle have natural fleshing ability to stay fat on grass. Our cows take care of themselves wintering on desert winter range without any hay and calve unassisted.

MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mikelpi@yahoo.com

Greetings, As my dad would have said, it’s been colder than a well diggers butt! I have never been able to find out just how cold a well digger’s butt really is, but I feel sorry for the poor digger. I for one, can tell you it’s been darn cold. Well, we have a new twist to the food comments this month. Dixie and I were at the Chiropractor a while back, with the husband-and-wife chiropractor team Josh and Lisa Rardin. We usually end up talking about food and how we prepare it and where the meat comes from. Josh and his kids are all hunters, so a lot of his meat comes from the great outdoors. I on the other hand go to the locker and pick up my CHB (certified Hereford Beef) or my CBP (certified Berkshire Pork). When Dixie and I detox, we usually end up eating something Josh or the kids have harvested from the outdoors. The last time, we had bear sausage, and in the past we have had deer jerky. With any luck, we will have another chuck of exotic animal next appointment. We have both been down the smoker road and both still enjoy the smoked meat; especially the loins and briskets. Then I went Blackstone crazy. I still like my Blackstone! In fact, I can’t wait till the weather turns just a little more human so that I can prepare myself a CHB ribeye. Our newest adventure is a Vortex Air Fryer Pro. Our first experiment with the air machine was tater tots; 16 minutes 370 degrees. Look out fast food people, our french fries and tater tots are deadly and with no grease. I did try a ribeye and, as of now, that ribeye is way better on the Blackstone. My latest adventure with the air fryer was a pork chop, 400 degrees for 12 minutes seasoned with Special Shit, (www. specialshit.com) it was deadly. Hamburgers and sausage

with Good Shit seasoning are awesome in the air fryer as well. My next adventure will be fish in the air fryer. Josh and Lisa say the fish filets are way better than what you get at the fast-food places. I think I have found a new friend, the Vortex Air Fryer Pro. At least until the weather gets good enough for me and my Traeger and Blackstone to be outside. Thanks Josh and Lisa Rardin for your introduction to my new friend, The Air Fryer. I hope that our livestock farmers and ranchers keep the faith that this cold weather will break, and we will get some relief from the extreme cold during birthing season. To all those folks that complain about the cost of their meat supply, get your clothes on and go help a farmer or rancher for a day, you will appreciate that meat supply you enjoy. As always, I pray for our country’s leaders, our first responders, our law enforcement folks, and our military and their families for sharing their loved ones, for our safety and freedom!! God Bless America

Character is doing the right thing when nobody's looking. There are too many people who think that the only thing that's right is to get by, and the only thing that's wrong is to get caught. ~ J. C. Watts

COMMENTARY

The Road Ahead for Cattle Markets by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade

Folks, remember your ‘3’C’s? Cattle, Crude and Copper. The Federal Reserve and the sundry Presidents of most of the Fed banks around the country keep saying they see no signs of meeting the 2% inflation mandate presently. These guys are comedians, with Jerome Powell the most comical of all. Did you hear his speech a few weeks ago when he said they ‘needed to see actual inflation rise before considering policy change’. Folks, since your received your January issue of Livestock Plus the following dramatic price increases have occurred: First the ‘3’C’s: Crude Oil: up 13.00 per barrel [over 240% increase annualized] Copper: up 30 cents per lb. [over 110% increase annualized] April Fat Cattle: up 9.00 cwt [over 90% increase annualized] Now take a look at the feed seed of the equation for the feed formula for livestock producers: March Corn: up 50 cents per bushel [over 120% annualized] March Soybeans: up 45 cents per bushel [over 35% annualized] Does all of the foregoing sound like no ‘actual inflation’? Hardly. Finally, Bitcoin. It is up over 700% on an annualized basis since the beginning of the year. Bitcoin is considered by many analysts to be the digital store of value that fiat currencies around the world h ave failed to be and Bitcoin is not manipulated like some metal markets have been, e.g. JP Morgan was fined over 900 million dollars several months ago. [https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/jpmorgan-chase-co-agrees-pay920-million-connection-schemes-defraud-precious-metals-and-us] Why is Bitcoin now a critical market for Livestock Producers to use as an analytical tool for inflation trends even if livestock folks do not trade it? As long as Bitcoin continues to go north folks should reasonably assume that inflation is in motion or certainly coming at us 300 mph and that rubber money will continue to be printed to pay for ‘programs’ and continued subtle transition to s ocialistic type of policies under the guise o f trying to make capitalism fair for everyone so that no one is left out of their fair share. Bottom line? Inflation will shock us all for the next 24 months before a global crash of the system due to multi-trillion-dollar debts around the world that cannot be repaid by the U.S. or most other countries. Until then? It will be critical for Livestock Producers to hedge their feed formulas since the family and corporate pocketbooks will not be served well by seeing sharply higher Cattle per head prices be consumed entirely by spikes in

feed costs. Talk with us sooner than later about different ways of hedging agricultural costs from Corn to Diesel to rates on bank lines of credit. First, call Michelle White here at our Board of Trade office in Chicago and get access on your smartphone and get in the habit of reading the daily 312 Market Advisory each morning to get out in front of the proverbial ‘financial 18 Wheeler’ instead of being behind it and subject to its every whim. We are keeping the charts on this issue the same as your January Livestock Plus issue so you can the validity of the linear chart work to see how far we’ve come and where key ag markets still appear headed to. IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

ICA State Priorities The 89th Iowa General Assembly kicked off the 2021 Legislative Session on Jan. 11. The Capitol is much quieter than usual given the COVID-19 pandemic, as many associations, groups and individuals are communicating with elected officials via email, phone and video conferences. Iowa’s state constitution requires that the Governor communicate to the general assembly the Condition of the State. On Jan. 12, Governor Reynolds shared her speech with the legislature and all Iowans. A few of her main priorities include: broadband, childcare and getting students back in school. More specifically, Governor Reynolds proposes: • Broadband Expansion - Invest $450 million by 2025 to provide high-speed internet to all Iowans; • Mental Health Funding - Provide mental health regions with $15 million from the state in FY 2022 and another $15 million in FY 2023 to expand access and implement mental health reforms that have been enacted over the past three years; • Telehealth Services - Continue and expand the use of telehealth; • Emergency Medical Services – Support a bill to expand rural EMS services; • Tax Reform - Remove unnecessary triggers from the 2018 Tax Modification Act; • Affordable Housing - Increase funding for the Workforce Housing Incentive Program from $25 million to $50 million; • Child Care - Allocate $3 million to the Employer Innovation Fund and $25 million of child care development block grants to promote the development of child care facilities; and

• Centers of Excellence Pilot Project Allocate $1 million to encourage hospitals and clinics to bring together rural physicians and specialists to create hubs that provide highly-skilled care. Our priorities are similar to years past, and we remain committed to protecting and pursuing the interests of Iowa’s cattle producers. A few key issues we intend to follow: 1. Veterinary Diagnostic Lab - Support a request for additional funding for the ISU VDL. Regular appropriations to the VDL were reduced last session. The services provided by the VDL to the livestock industry, as well as in response to COVID-19, are incredibly valuable. 2. Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship (IDALS) • Foreign Animal Disease - Support a $500k investment in foreign animal disease response and preparation. We helped secure this investment last year, and see value in requesting additional dollars during this legislative session. Remember--it’s not a matter of IF, but rather WHEN we will experience a disease outbreak. • Value-Added Agriculture Grant Program - IDALS is requesting $500k in annual appropriations to support programs that add value to traditional commodity crops, expand fruit and vegetable production along with other alternative crops, increase processing capacity and open new market opportunities for livestock products.

Stay Connected The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association will be hosting Zoom meetings throughout the legislative session to connect members to state legislators. We’re calling them “Cattle Calls.” ICA Cattle Calls will be 30-minute Zoom video conference calls with key elected officials. Each virtual meeting will provide an opportunity for members to ask questions about bills and to highlight important issues in the beef cattle industry. This is a member-only benefit that we hope to continue on in the future.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE: • Tuesday, March 9 • Tuesday, April 6 Expect final details to come via e-news and social media. March 2021

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Iowa Foundation Heifer Award Winner Announced Although this past year has been very atypical, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation was still able to partner with Iowa Beef Breeds Council to provide an amazing opportunity for one deserving seventh grader from Iowa, through the Iowa Foundation Heifer Award. This joint venture began in 2010 with the intent to promote seedstock herd development and to get our youth more involved in the cattle industry in the state. This opportunity is only offered to seventh graders from Iowa. They are required to fill out an application and the top applicants are then interviewed. Based on their interest and involvement in the cattle business, one applicant is awarded three registered bred heifers of the breed of their choice. This winner picks up their heifers in January and they begin a five-year journey of caring for these animals, calving them, breeding them and keeping records on all of the animals raised from the original heifers. In the end, they repay $7,500 back to the Iowa Beef Breeds Council to finish their educational adventure. Congratulations to this year’s winner, Sarabeth Decious. Sarabeth is the daughter of Peter and Kelly Decious, of Tracy, Iowa. She lives with her parents and two older sisters, Taylor and Reagan. Sarabeth attends Pella Middle School where she is active in basketball and choir. She is a member of the Iowa Junior Beef Breeds Association, the American Junior Hereford Association and the American Chianina Association and has participated in local, regional and national events in these breed organizations. She is currently serving as team captain of the Marion County Livestock Quiz Bowl Team. Sarabeth is excited about her opportunity to participate in this program because she wants to learn more and become more

involved in the cattle industry. Although she is a third generation showman, she is anxious to become a producer and this program will give her the opportunity to achieve one of her goals of starting her own herd. She plans to grow this into a show cattle company. One of her other goals is to make a nice profit from this so that she can pay for college as well as learn how to be financially responsible, learn how to market and plan for expenses.

such as sales and public speaking. Sarabeth’s bred heifers came from VanAernam’s Simmentals owned by Gale and Andy VanAernam from Exira, Iowa. Gale and his son, Andy, operate their Simmental herd with the support of their wives and kids. The VanAernam’s have been very supportive of this program and have had other recipients chose heifers from their herd. Our thanks to the VanAernam’s for their support of the Iowa Foundation Heifer Program! Congratulations again to our winner, Sarabeth Decious. For more information on this program, please contact the Iowa Beef Breeds Council at iowabeefexpo. com or the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation at iowacattlemensfoundation.org.

Sarabeth looks forward to the opportunity to build new relationships with fellow breeders and customers to utilize their wisdom and experience. She said she chose the Simmental breed because they are a very functional breed and she wants to develop a herd where she can market her cattle to 4-H members and help other cattlemen increase their rate of gain and percentage yields. Sarabeth plans to promote her project by participating in national junior shows in the show ring as well as in competitions

Lefty’s Logic by Eric Lee

"Markets" continued from pg 14 achieved by both forward contracts and the use of the Board livestock instruments in Chicago. Education on hedging and risk management is always key and so we encourage you to reach out to us at the Board in Chicago and ask for available information that can be shared with you via your iPhone or iPad. If you are already a bona-fide livestock producer you can probably think of many times over the years that you wish you had used airbags to hedge your hedge on your Cattle on the dirt or simply taken the hedges’ off. Again, if you would like to get a different and global perspective on livestock hedging by integrating USDA wholesale

I am sitting here at Iowa Beef Expo writing this, and boy is it good to be back. I have been here as a consigner, fitter and clipper but this is my first time here as ring staff. I believe the last time I was here, Anthony Peoples and I brought up a pair of Charolais bulls to sell. We ended up doing great and had third high selling bull behind North Grove Charolais and Fountain Charolais. After we had everything wrapped up with the sale, we decided to go grab a bite to eat and have a couple celebratory cocktails. We happened to stumble upon a little bar and grill and figured it looked like a good place to stop. Anthony, me and three other buddies walked in to a bar full of elderly women cutting a rug. I don’t think we even had a chance to order our first round before getting drug out on to the dance floor. We spent the next 3 hours dancing laughing and visiting with these ladies, the youngest of which was 65. I’m still not sure who had more fun, them or us! To say it was a memorable Iowa beef Expo would be an understatement. It is a day that gets brought up between us anytime Expo is mentioned. As we work further into the spring bull season and begin planning for you fall sales please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the other LPI family for assistance. Thank you and god bless! God bless, Eric “Lefty” Lee 608-295-5312

beef pricing and you would like to receive on a complimentary basis for two full months by email both ‘Daily and Weekend ‘Livestock Reports’ that includes Fat and Feeder Cattle Valuations, and respective beef cutout valuations then please call Michelle White here at our Board office @ 312.756.0931 and share your email address with her in confidence. Private tutorials here in our Chicago Board office are available for new livestock hedge accounts that open with us in this new year 2021. And remember, hedging livestock with Chicago Board Cattle futures still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. n

FYI

Colostrum Management Critical for Newborn Calves farmprogress.com While many calves will ingest adequate colostrum, beef producers know calving season can be full of surprises. Colostrum, or first milk, is extremely important for newborn calves. Ingestion of colostrum imparts passive immunity, which is necessary to protect calves from infectious disease. This is particularly important in cattle because bovine antibodies are not readily transferred across the placenta, which means calves are born almost completely unprotected from environmental pathogens and infectious diseases. Chris Clark, Iowa State University Extension beef specialist, says these antibodies are just one in a long list of beneficial components colostrum provides. “We often focus on IgG and passive immunity, which is obviously important, but colostrum is loaded with other important molecules,” Clark says. “Even beyond the nutritional components, there are enzymes, growth factors, cells, hormones and much more that we sometimes take for granted. These things are really important to help newborn calves get off to a good start.” Calves must ingest colostrum within the first few hours of life to acquire these antibodies and the associated protection. Newborn beef calves should ingest approximately 2 quarts of high-quality colostrum within the first four to six hours of life, and an additional 1 to 2 quarts by about 12 hours of age. “The ability to absorb antibodies steadily declines over the first few hours of life,” Clark says. “The old rule of thumb is that calves must ingest colostrum within the first 24 hours of life, but actually, the percent of antibodies absorbed decreases dramatically by 12 hours of age and is virtually zero by 24 hours of age.” Many calves will be born without incident and will ingest adequate colostrum without any human intervention. However, producers know that calving season can be full of challenges and surprises: dystocia, weak calves, inclement weather, poor mothers, lack of colostrum production, and a host of other issues that can interfere with consumption and absorption of colostrum. So, what can you do to provide colostrum when these challenges occur? Consider colostrum sources Mother’s milk is almost always best. If possible, help the calf nurse or milk out the dam to tube or bottle-feed the newborn. Heifers may not offer the quantity or quality necessary, and calves born to heifers may require colostrum supplementation or several small feedings offered as more colostrum is let down and made available by the young dam. In cases of insufficient colostrum production by the dam or when it is not possible to milk the dam, the next best option may be to use fresh or frozen colostrum from another cow. Mature, healthy, well-vaccinated cows within the same herd are the best choices for colostrum donors. When compared to heifers, mature cows produce colostrum that is more abundant and more concentrated. Healthy wellvaccinated cows will be less likely to transmit disease and more likely to offer protective antibodies through colostrum. Finally, to minimize biosecurity risk, it is always advisable to use colostrum from cows within your herd, Clark says.

"Colostrum" continued from pg 44 “The challenge is that calves of heifers are often the ones that need supplementation, and heifers often calve ahead of the mature cow herd. It can be difficult just in terms of timing and logistics to find a good colostrum donor and make everything work,” he says. Colostrum can be frozen and stored for use at a later time. The usual recommendation is to freeze in either 1- or 2-quart zip-top freezer bags or freezer-safe containers. Take care to thaw appropriately as excessive heat, uneven heating, freezethaw cycles, etc., can damage antibodies in colostrum. The best method for thawing is to place the frozen bag or container in a warm water bath (110 degrees F) and stir every five minutes, continuing until the colostrum reaches 104 degrees. This thawing process takes about 40 minutes. Beef producers are sometimes interested in obtaining frozen colostrum from dairy operations that regularly freeze and store colostrum. If considering this option, it is important to remember two potential issues: Dairy vs. beef. Colostrum of dairy cows is much less

48

Livestock Plus Inc.

concentrated than that of beef cows. So, using dairy-derived colostrum will require a greater volume to impart the same immunity. Disease. Several infectious diseases are more prevalent in dairies than in beef operations, meaning biosecurity must be a concern. At a minimum, you should be confident that all stored or frozen colostrum is free of blood, mastitis organisms, Johne’s disease and fecal contamination. “Thinking about biosecurity, I always discourage producers from getting colostrum from other herds. The risk is just too great that a new pathogen or disease could be introduced,” Clark says. When replacer needed Numerous commercial products are available to replace or supplement maternal colostrum. Most colostrum products are manufactured from bovine colostrum or bovine serum and are labeled as either colostrum supplements or colostrum replacers. Colostrum supplements generally have less than 100 grams of IgG per dose, often approximately 50 to 60 grams per dose, and are meant to be used as a supplement to maternal colostrum. Given alone, colostrum supplements lack the IgG concentration necessary to prevent failure of passive transfer and they lack the necessary nutritional components to ensure calf survival and health. Colostrum replacers generally have greater than 100 grams of IgG per dose, sometimes up to 150 grams per dose, and are meant to be used as a replacement when maternal colostrum is completely unavailable. Colostrum replacements also are formulated to supply the nutrients necessary for a newborn calf. Replacers normally have greater fat content and greater overall energy content than supplements and often contain more vitamins, minerals and protein as well. Colostrum replacers are more expensive because they are more concentrated with antibodies and nutrients but in many cases may be worth the investment, Clark says. “Sometimes you get what you pay for and when it comes to commercial colostrum products, I would spend the extra money and buy a high quality colostrum replacer,” he says. “If that greater concentration of antibodies and nutrients prevents failure of passive transfer and nourishes the newborn, it will be well worth the investment.” It is strongly recommended that you use a product licensed by the USDA and that you carefully read and follow label directions to ensure proper use. FYI

10 Steps to Remember Before Turning Cattle Out This Spring by Chris Torres farmprogress.com The weather is starting to warm up and the grass is getting greener. That means spring grazing season is almost here. There are many things producers need to think about before they turn out their cattle to enjoy the early fruits of spring, especially when it comes to preserving good-quality forage. Brett Chedzoy, a Cornell Extension agent and silvopasture expert based in Watkins Glen, N.Y., says producers should do as much as possible to protect the soil during soft ground conditions that often occur early in the season. “Use sacrifice areas, if needed, or speed up the rotation,” Chedzoy says. “Don’t overgraze as the pastures are getting started and rotate multiple times a day if needed.” Dave Hartman, a livestock Extension educator with Penn State, says managing the spring flush of growth is key to a successful grazing plan. Here are some things he suggests: 1. Make hay or baleage. Stored forages will be needed next winter. But Hartman says to avoid buying hay equipment just to harvest a small amount of excess forage. Instead, see if there is anyone who could bale the hay on a custom basis. If there are no custom operators where you are at, baling the excess may not be a realistic option. 2. Graze additional cattle. Grazing stockers or replacements can be used to temporarily increase the stocking rate to utilize excess forage. Those cattle would be removed in early summer to drastically reduce the stocking rate. Obviously, this requires being in an additional enterprise area that involves more time, capital, marketing and possibly wintering considerations. Consider these factors: Do you want to be in an additional enterprise? Do you have the capital to buy the cattle or are there options for grazing cattle for other people? This may be a realistic option for some farmers but could be a disaster for others. 3. Try mob-grazing. Ultra-high stock density, or mob grazing, involves grouping cattle onto very small land areas with frequent moves to new paddocks. Sometimes the occupation period is measured in hours, with several moves per day. This involves more labor than most other grazing management systems. As the season progresses, forage grazed for the first time will be tall and coarse. Some forage will be trampled and some forage will be grazed. The trampling can help deal with excess spring growth by returning it to, and feeding, the soil. Mob grazing has the additional advantage of stockpiling some forage that can be rationed out through the summer slump. "10 Steps" continued on pg 56

55

"10 Steps" continued from pg 54 4. Mow and rot. If you don’t own hay equipment, don’t have neighbors who bale hay and can’t afford to buy some stocker cattle to eat excess forage, this could be the best option. Hartman says to take out a few paddocks before they get too coarse, and rank and mow them. This will keep the pasture vegetative and growing. If the excess forage is mowed too late it can have a tie-up effect on soil nitrogen, which will negatively impact regrowth. Mow earlier, if possible, while the forage is still green. 5. Turn out cattle early on a rotational basis. Begin the rotation early and make sure there is enough pasture to allow the livestock to fully access their dry-matter needs. Or, provide supplemental forage as the rotation starts. Starting a grazing rotation late, he says, makes the spring flush problem much worse. 6. Try rapid rotation. Running the first several rotations on a rapid or flash grazing model could help reduce the spring flush problem. The idea is to graze plants as they try to push a seed head, consequently keeping the plant in a vegetative state. 7. Plant warm-season annuals. Planting warm-season annuals can not only fill-in the summer slump, it could reduce acreage for spring grazing to a level compatible with the stocking rate. As with baling, there are equipment expenses, and grazing managers shouldn’t be tempted to buy equipment just for this purpose. But if you have large acreage, already own equipment for row crops or have a neighbor who has a no-till drill, this could be an option. Also, if you have paddocks that need renovation, the warm-season annual could be used in the renovation process. 8. Plant warm-season perennials. As with warm-season annuals, warm-season perennials can be used to not only bridge the summer slump, but also to reduce acreage for spring grazing to a level more compatible with the stocking rate. Keep in mind that these species take a few years to become fully established. But if you are patient, a properly managed paddock of warm-season perennials could provide years of good summer grazing and can help reduce your spring flush problem. 9. Don’t apply nitrogen this spring. If there is a problem with spring flush in our cool-season pastures, why should we apply nitrogen in early spring and make the problem worse? Hartman says a better strategy is to skip the spring application and instead apply nitrogen a little later, near the end of the spring flush, and stockpile some forage to get through the summer slump. 10. Establish some legumes. Hartman says most farms that use cool-season forages for grazing are lacking in legumes. In comparison to grass, legume growth peaks a little lower in spring and peaks a little higher in summer. Hartman says this can have the effect of reducing the spring flush and helping to bridge the summer slump. Research done at the University of Missouri has shown that pastures with a strong component of red clover yielded about the same as a straight tall fescue stand fertilized with 120 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Furthermore, the grass/ red clover pastures had more yield and uniform growth distribution throughout the summer. In the straight grass pastures, most of the annual growth occurred by July. n

Van Aernam’s View by Andy Van Aernam

I never really thought about how much space my 300 lb carcass takes up inside the tiny, enclosed cab of our Bobcat skid loader until this morning, when a mink came crawling up my pant leg while I was filling the feed wagon. I screamed. Loudly. In a very high octave. I don’t know which one of us was more terrified. The only thing that saved me from shitting myself was I clinched my ass shut in fear that that was the hole he might choose to hide. Fortunately I got the door flung open and we both lived to fight another day. A note from Mike: This is a reprint from several years back, but it made me laugh so hard, I had to have Andy share it again! n

It is finally the first of March and after that February, I think we are all thinking the same thing; it is time for a warm up! To me there is nothing better than a warm summer evening checking cows! This time of year, at our place, is always so hectic from calving to sales and even back to breeding. It is easy to get caught up and forget to take time to breath. We have an old bull customer who gave me the best solution to this. This customer runs several hundred cows and has been very successful. One time he said that he was always getting stressed about things and his wife came up with the idea of “bucket time.” He said the way this works is at least once every couple of weeks, when the weather is decent, you go out on a hillside with a nice breeze, sit on your bucket and watch your cows move around. He told us this is the best time to reflect and be thankful and proud of what you have accomplished so far! Life gets busy and sometimes we forget to take a look at just how far we’ve come! I’m not saying let off the gas with your program but it’s okay to hit cruise for at least one night a week during the summer. This week, the hat goes off to warmer weather and bucket sitters! As always, don’t hesitate to give me or any of our team a call to help market your livestock! God bless, Austin Sorensen 712-310-3788 aust.sorensen@gmail.com

THE Land Guy

February 2021

Stay up to date with the latest market trends in farmland.

David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer

Farmers National Company • www.FarmersNational.com • (515) 460-8585 • DWhitaker@FarmersNational.com In the past we have seen land averaging around $100-$110/CSR, then suddenly in the last quarter we saw land shoot up to the $128/CSR range. The strength in the grain commodity prices, as well as significant government payments supports the increase in land prices we are seeing. We see that the buyer’s equity ratios are around 67%, with strong liquidity and working capital. Most ground is being purchased from a position of financial strength. The discipline of using cash and capital in the farming world has paid off for our farmers. Cap rate compression is allowing for investors to pay similar prices with a lower expected ROI. The lack of confidence in alternative investments is pushing new investors into the stable world we know as Farmland.

The Land Guy

Sellers are few and buyers are many! Land is worth what someone is willing to give. Right now we have more that want to give than those that want to let go.

Results from the 52 Sales (5,178 acres) this last month have the average for the state at $8,367 ($114/CSR), high quality ground at $9,982/acre, and medium quality ground averaging $7,156/acre. Low quality ground is averaging $4,700/acre.

COMMENTARY

Van Aernam’s View by Andy Van Aernam

A chance at redemption. The alarm goes off every two hours when the conditions get this harsh. Friday night, I was too late. Tonight I found a water bag outside instead of a calf that was too cold to save. Timing is everything on a night like this. -34 windchill and I believe that is a conservative estimate. Right now I’m having a combination of far over dues and incredibly earlys converging at once when I absolutely didn’t need them being born. Calf number 10 in the last 24 hours is getting delivered in the barn instead of into almost certain death outside. It’s as brutal of temps as I can remember. At least for this many days in a row. And I’ve done this for a few years now. Thank goodness we aren’t getting massive snows along with it. The wear and tear on my dad’s 75 year old, long over worked body this weekend is obvious at this point. He can’t handle the concrete and the drag to tie outs in DesMoines anymore and the weather is proving to be more than he can handle on the farm as well. My nephew is helping but dad won’t give up being a cattleman. I think he’s convinced himself if he gives up he’ll die. A theory that is prevalent among many old farmers I think. He’s been upbeat and positive on the phone when I’ve been calling back, but I can hear that he’s trying to hide the pain. Tonight when I got home I could see the defeat creeping in. Hopefully the cattle at the Expo are well enough received by customers new and old today at 11:30 to put a little bit of a bandage on the emotional and physical wounds this lifestyle leaves. It’s a vicious cycle at times in the battle of life, I pray the problems just keep staying outside the house. It’s now 3:38 and the next alarm is at 4:00. Then prepare to head to Des Moines at 5:00. I just as well make coffee. n

Right in the middle of the Iowa Beef Expo and holy buckets it’s COLD! This cold adds a whole new level of concern for all the farmers and ranchers with livestock. Between my prayers for the safety of the animals, it’s also been continuous prayers for the emotional well being of these farmers. On a personal level I’ve watched it take a toll on my husband trying to make the best decisions for our livestock, and be able to stay awake entire nights trying to unthaw a water line that goes to our pig nursery, not to mention the females that always seem to farrow early with those drastic weather changes. I know with all the livestock there are so very many things that fall apart, and usually nothing happens until the middle of the night. The verse that keeps running on repeat in my head, Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ that gives me strength. Our oldest kids, Tucker and Taylor, participated in the livestock judging contest at the Iowa Beef Expo this year on Valentine’s Day. It’s a special day to our family because it’s the heavenly birthday of our brother-in-law, Dan Kiesling. Dan loved donuts, so every year we get donuts on Valentine’s Day, and it’s usually during the Iowa Beef Expo. Dan was the Livestock Judging Coach at Michigan State University, before he passed away in July 2016. I was pregnant with Treva at the time, but our Big T’s were devastated. Uncle Dan was that fun guy that always made them feel important! So on our trip to Des Moines very early on Valentines Day, Tay and I were talking about the basics of judging and an introduction to EPDs. Suddenly, in the middle of our discussion, she said, “I wish Uncle Dan was here to help me.” We both just took a moment after that, this mama got a little choked up especially after realizing it was our day to honor Dan anyway with #donuts4dan. It just gave me chills that we were working on the livestock judging that he was so passionate about on his birthday. We all miss you Dan, hope you are smiling down at the kids giving it their best shot! We will never forget. Please continue to keep our military and our nation in your prayers. Travel safe to all the upcoming shows and sales! God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com www.livestockplusinc.com

Dearest Lord, We are in the middle of winter. Everything seems dark and cold both in the world and in our lives. It’s easy to feel depressed and hopeless even though we know that we are surrounded by blessings. Thank you for walking with us even through the deepest valleys and promising us an abundant life both here on Earth and in heaven with you. We ask you to guide our leaders and government officials so that they might walk in your ways and seek your will. We ask for your mercy on those who are struggling financially, emotionally and physically during this pandemic. We ask for your strength to do our daily work and the wisdom to know how to take time to be with our family and friends. Turn us away from our sins and help us live lives that are worthy of your gospel. Finally, give us the courage to share your truth and love with others so that we might bring light into their darkness. We pray that all might come to faith in you so that they might share eternal life and the peace that you alone can bring. Amen.
