Why use yardley Bulls

1. Yardley bulls have eye appeal and conformation to sire calves that will top the market, and performance and growth to push down the scales. Feeders want Yardley sired calves because of their eye appeal and gainability 2. Their heifer calves will be the best cows that you have ever owned. 3. These bulls are grown in big lots where they get plenty of exercise. Wintered mostly on hay so they can live on grass, many buyers tell us they like our bulls because they, “don’t have to pamper them.” Performance comes from their ability to convert forage. 4. Our focus has always been on our maternal traits and cow families. We have AI’d for 51 years selecting the best bulls we can find, it shows in these bulls, they are solid footed, big topped, stout and good looking. Selection emphasis is placed on fleshing ability and performance to excel on the range, in the pasture and feedlot, with eye appeal. 5. Our cattle have natural fleshing ability to stay fat on grass. Our cows take care of themselves wintering on desert winter range without any hay and calve unassisted on their own.

MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mikelpi@yahoo.com

I really should just be quiet about the weather; we really don’t have much to complain about, but there really isn’t anything to brag about, either. I have a feeling we will be paying for this nice weather! The first day of Expo in Iowa, with a print deadline looking me straight in the face, my computer charger decided to quit. So, Anthony Peoples and I went on tour around town to find one. After we accomplished that, we landed at The Waterfront in West Des Moines. Most of you that know me, realize that Sushi is probably a little too exotic for me. As I would tell you, I don’t like slimy stuff and if I can’t look at it and identify what it is, I probably am not eating it. That is the problem with Sushi. Well, just for Anthony I did try it. Let me just say that I’m pretty darn sure that I will not be ordering Sushi anytime soon. I sure wouldn’t want to make a shortage of it for you folks that like it. Iowa Beef Expo food: the way I see it, it is a two-stop shopping center for food. You have your choice of Campbell’s

fast food pizza, sandwiches, chicken strips in the Bull Pen or, as I call it, Campbell’s slow food located off the foyer that better fits my needs. They have meat loaf dinners, roast beef dinners, and vegetable beef soup with potatoes and veggie’s and a place to sit and eat it. This year, the Campbells were honored as Friends of the Iowa Winter Beef Expo. I personally want to say thank you to the Campbells for all the years of feeding me. You all know some of the smallest things in life really impress me, and I was very impressed at the Holiday Inn downtown town during Expo week. I hit the motel restaurant and not being real hungry, I decided to try a cup of corn chowder soup. It sure isn’t on my usual diet but darn that was good! From what I can tell, it has corn, potatoes, onion, and a hint of bacon. Ol’ Mike was plum happy with that soup. Light, but heavy, nice flavor, and darn sure hit the hunger spot. Once again, this year during the start of each day at Iowa Winter Beef Expo we say thanks to our military by playing The National Anthem over the sound system at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Unlike some of our professional sports people; everyone, and I mean everyone, stops to remove cover and out of respect stay at attention until its done. It doesn’t matter where they are at the time it starts; in middle of the road, leading cattle in from tie outs, they all stop to pay respect. I personally want to say I’m impressed and very proud of everyone for their patriotism. As always, please keep our military and their families in your thoughts and prayers. God Bless

Banks want them to go since this current backdrop looks like ‘Deflation’ instead of ‘Inflation’.

by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade

You’ve heard of the Three Musketeers? Well, this month’s column will also focus on a different kind of ‘Three Musketeers’. I allude to three of the biggest and major commodities in the world. We are talking about Crude, Copper and Cattle. The Central Banks of the world, including our own U.S. Federal Reserve have admitted that their inflation targets are not being met and that there is more to do. You may be wondering why do we want inflation if it just eats away at our families purchasing power every few years? Good question that would be since the purchasing power of your dollars has collapsed since the early 80’s when massive deficits began so that we could bring Gorbachev to his knees so that he would take down the Berlin Wall. The Wall is down and Gorbachev is almost 90 years old and obviously no longer in power, yet the budget deficit is now a staggering 1 Trillion Dollars and the total debt is about 23 Trillion dollars and no one knows how it will be paid back.

Suffice it to say that hedging your family and ranch interests may be critical for several months and maybe even a few years if Trump misses the mark by a just a few electoral votes in November. Few hard working old fashioned capitalists here in the Midwest can wrap their mind around the idea of a socialist named Sanders being the President of the United States, yet polls show it ‘might’ happen. Let’s hope it doesn’t happen and Trump pulls it off lest the rights of little babies and livestock producers be impacted in a dramatic way. Mr. Trump has got to get more ambassadorial and more presidential fast to see moderates come into the fold once again. You’ll also see in charts below that the Fat Cattle and Feeder Cattle are in trouble in the big picture, or at least a few months. Hedging may make the difference for you. Please contact Michelle White here at our Board of Trade office at 312.756.0931 for more information.

Bottom line? The Central Bankers around the world are desperately trying to achieve inflation to somehow make the world economic engine fire with higher compression but it is not working. You’ll see in the triple chart window below that the month of February brought sharp reversals down in Cattle, Copper and Crude Oil. It is probably safe to say that these three markets are going the opposite way the Central

Feedlot Forums Members of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association are invited to attend several free and low-cost educational events, including Cow Calf and Feedlot Forums, each year. In January, ICA hosted three successful forums. ICA staff and leaders were able to interact, network and give updates on topics to over 200 producers. Along with industry updates, attendees learned more about topics such as risk management, 2020 cattle

market outlook, cow nutrition and calf health and visited with industry reps about the latest products and services they are offering. We’ll be on the road again with two more forums hosted across eastern Iowa in March. There is no cost to attend and a complimentary meal is provided. In addition to the educational topics, these events are a great way to network with industry representatives at the tradeshow!

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Benton County Cattlemen stand up for Beef How would you react if you heard on the nightly news that your local school district was moving towards a plant-based menu? That’s exactly what happened on Jan. 8, when two eastern Iowa news stations reported that Benton County schools were interested in plant-based meals for nutritional and environmental reasons. The stories stemmed from a food-service training held in the district that day. The training was funded by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). HSUS is not affiliated with local humane societies, but is a large, national organization working to eliminate animal agriculture. And their “Forward Food” program is one way they influence institutions to decrease meat consumption. The news stories featured HSUS staff promoting myths about beef production and nutrition. Word spread quickly, and local leaders contacted the Iowa Cattle Industry Headquarters (ICA and the Iowa Beef Industry Council) for assistance. ICA and IBIC staff provided the Benton County Cattlemen with facts information on beef’s environmental impact and nutritional value. Within 48 hours, the beef industry leaders met with the Vinton-Shellsburg superintendent to find out more about the training, its intentions, and the school’s plans for its meal program. The Benton County Cattlemen also attended a Vinton-Shellsburg school board meeting, reiterating their support for beef as part of a balanced school lunch program. The cattlemen read a statement, saying, “On behalf of the Cattlemen of Benton County, I would like to express our

frustration and dismay that a workshop promoting the preparation and serving of meatless meals was conducted last week at Vinton-Shellsburg High School… Especially troubling is the fact that the workshop was sponsored and presented by the Humane Society of the United States, a well-known animal rights activist group whose mission is to entirely eliminate the use of animals for food, research, clothing or entertainment. One of their key strategies is to target young people and incrementally change their belief systems, which they tried to do right here with our own school districts in Benton County.” According to Vinton-Shellsburg Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock, the district was unaware that the food service training would have an emphasis on “meatless meals,” believing instead that it would be focused on making meals from scratch. Since meeting with the county cattlemen, Hainstock released a statement saying, “Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District has no intention of implementing a meatless meals effort within our food service program. We are disappointed the Humane Society of the United States gave the impression we are; we do not plan to continue a relationship with them.” The Benton County Cattlemen have also attended school board meetings for Union Community Schools and Center Point-Urbana, with plans to attend Belle Plaine and Benton Community in the coming weeks. ICA sent the schools this letter: The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is proud to stand firm in support of beef as part of a balanced school lunch program. Beef and beef farmers are the target of

well-funded, devious campaigns to eliminate animal agriculture under the guise of environmental stewardship, animal welfare and health concerns. The beef community has worked for decades to decrease their impact on the environment, and advances in genetics and technology have led U.S. farmers to be the most efficient in the world. Although global statistics on greenhouse gas emissions are often used, only 3.7% of U.S. emissions come from cattle. Transportation, on the other hand, accounts for 28% of emissions in the U.S. There are nearly 250 beef farmers in Benton County alone, and over 25,000 in the state of Iowa. These farmers work hard every day to ensure that their animals are comfortable and well-cared for. They are active members of their communities who support local businesses and volunteer in local organizations, often representing several generations on the family farm. The product these farmers raise is, quite frankly, amazing. Not only is it delicious, but one three-ounce serving of lean beef provides 25 grams of protein and 173 calories. You would have to eat almost 2 cups of black beans, for a total of 329 calories, to consume the same amount of protein. Beef also provides nutrients that are vital to growing children, including B vitamins, which help maintain brain function, and zinc, which is essential for the immune system. To put it simply, beef is irreplaceable in the diet. It is great tasting, easy to incorporate into kid-friendly meals, and healthy. The victims of this activist attack are not only the members of the beef community, but the children who would be denied beef’s nutrition. On behalf of Iowa’s beef community, we urge the schools in Benton County to reaffirm its support for beef as an important part of a balanced school lunch program.

COMMENTARY

Cody’s Column by Cody Crum

Is it really March already? In March, the first thing that comes to my mind is March Madness! I mean who doesn’t love some college basketball come tournament time? Even a mediocre fan of NCAA basketball will tune in to games when it comes to the Big Dance. I believe I have mentioned it before, but I spend a lot of time on the road this time of year officiating college basketball. So I am willing to bet, I get to see more basketball games than any one person can possibly need. Every night on the court is different. Some nights are well played games that are easy to officiate and then there are the other nights that are....well… not so easy! No matter the game though, they all pose a challenge and that is what drives me to keep going. I haven’t called a perfect game yet, and probably never will, but putting the work and effort in to do it, is what matters. Officials across the country put in much more time and work than you probably realize. During the season, we are constantly in the rule book, watching film and getting sent videos and clips to help learn how certain plays need to be called. In the off season (who am I kidding? There really isn’t an off season for us.), we attend many camps and training sessions all across the country learning from some of the best in the business. But just like with anything else in life, success is earned, not handed out. We must be willing to put in the work if we expect to get rewarded. I saw a quote recently that really hit me, “If you pray for God to move a mountain, then be prepared to wake up next to a shovel.” I am trying to make that my mentality in officiating and in life in general. There are a lot of people in this country that expect things to be handed to them. This sense of

50

entitlement is not what this country was founded on and I hope that we remember that. Best of luck as you finish up calving season and wish you all the best as we prepare for spring. God Bless, Cody

Current FARMLAND Market

Iowa Land Guy

Stay up to date with the latest market trends in Iowa farmland.

State Trends ($/Acre)

David Whitaker • Broker/Auctioneer

Whitaker Marketing Group • www.IowaLandGuy.com Winter is here and recent sale prices are showing strong numbers. Farmers are gearing up for the 2020 season. Most farmers are stopping by the FSA office and trying to determine whether they should enroll in the ARC County Program or the PLC Program. Grill Master’s Club: Ultimate Beginners Guide on How to Smoke Meat at Home Like a Pro https://grillmastersclub.com/ ultimate-beginners-guide-smoke-meat-home-like-pro/ If you want to step up your game, then smoking meats is where it’s at during colder months. We wanted to provide a great How to Smoke Meat Guide for those looking to learn using their current grill. Sure, you may be a master of creating perfect grill lines on your steaks, but can you smoke your own brisket, pork butt, bacon, cheese and much more? If not, then you need to expand your horizons. “But I don’t have a smoker,” you cry out, despite the fact that you’re sitting alone on your computer. That’s okay, amigo… because you don’t have to have one. In fact, all you need is a pile of wood chips, your trusty grill, and this handy guide to help you along to make sure that you finish with a beautiful slab of tender, juicy smoked meat slow-cooked to perfection. In the end, smoking meats is like art. It takes time and patience to master your craft, but once you do, you will never go back to cooking the old way again. With that in mind, let’s get to the basics of smoking meat. WHY SMOKE YOUR MEATS? If you’re not the type of person who likes to take extra steps in the cooking process, then you may be wondering if it’s worth it to smoke your meats at all. Does it really make a difference? To answer that question, you should try to find someone who does smoke their meats, and then have a cook-off. In the end, taste test your regularly grilled meat against your friend’s smoked meat and decide if the flavor difference is truly worth it. Unless you’re dead inside, or have a malfunctioning tongue, you will understand the reason immediately. If you don’t happen to have a friend who smokes meats, or the person just doesn’t want to accept your challenge, just know that smoking is done to create a better overall flavor. Smoking also tenderizes meats that would normally be too hard to eat. If you’ve ever had fall-off-the-bone ribs, then chances are that they were smoked as opposed to grilled. That being said, the level of smoke and the taste can be highly subjective, meaning that you may only find certain woods appealing, and in certain ratios. That’s why the art of smoking takes time to perfect as you try various aromas and flavors. Thus, before we can begin, you have to understand that smoking is all about finding the right balance. You must experi-

ment with different woods and cooking methods to find one that works for you. It can be a lot of work, but it will make your meats taste so much better and you will able to call yourself a Grill Master with enough experience. CHOOSING A SMOKER VS. DIY So, now that we’ve convinced you to start smoking your meats, you may be wondering if you should go all out and buy a high-class smoker. While that could make things easier for you, the fact is that you can get the same results with your current grill, regardless if it’s gas or charcoal, saving you the hassle and expense of buying a smoker. Unless you plan on opening up your own meat packing business or selling your food to people, we don’t suggest buying a separate smoker for your food. However, if you have a bunch of cash lying around and don’t know what to do with it, you might as well spring for a deluxe model. Keep in mind, however, that all of our tips and tricks are for people who want to use their current grill. GETTING STARTED WITH A GRILL SMOKER When it comes to a traditional outdoor grill, there are two things that you have to remember. First, you don’t want your meat directly over the heat source, and second, you want to cook it for hours on end. With that in mind, we first have to determine which kind of grill you are using, as the method will vary depending on which one you have. CHARCOAL If you have a charcoal grill, then the setup is relatively simple. All you have to do is pile up your coals on one side and have a drip pan on the other side. Once your coals are lit and hot enough for cooking, then you will place a layer of wood chips on top. For best results, place a layer of liquid into your drip pan so that it can help with the smoking proces. If you’re feeling a bit saucy, you can use apple juice to infuse a bit of sweetness into your meat. Otherwise, water will do. Once your coals are going and the wood is on, then you place your meat on the side over the drip pan, and then close the grill. You do need to leave an opening, however, so smoke can ventilate out. We’ll go over the importance of ventilation in a little bit. GAS GRILL FOR GRILLING If you use this type of grill, then the setup will be a little different. Since you can’t place wood chips over coals, you will have to put them into a metal pan, which you will insert directly over the flames. Once again, only have them on one side. To get the best results on a gas grill, you will want to preheat everything by keeping all burners on high for about twenty minutes. This will warm everything up and allow for the cooking process to be much smoother. Once your preheat session is finished, then you turn off the burners that are not below your wood chips, and you put your meat on the opposite side. Close the lid, leaving a little space for ventilation. SMOKE FLOW When smoking your meats, it’s imperative that you allow for the smoke to escape and move around. You don’t want things to stagnate inside the grill; otherwise, it will create some bad

"Grill Master's" continued from pg 70 results. When smoke accumulates too fast, your meat starts to burn from the hot temperatures, which means that you will have a charred, ashy taste to your meats. No one wants that. While the proper level of ventilation, or smoke-flow, as it’s called, depends on a variety of factors. As long as you leave a small opening you should be okay. This is one of those things that you can experiment with to get your desired results. WOOD BASICS The better the wood and meat, the better the flavor. The best smokers in the world have curated the best wood possible, which not only creates a luxurious flavor in your mouth but it helps to create the tenderest and juiciest meats you can find. As a beginner, you probably don’t know which wood is best, which is why we are going to give you this handy chart.

Again, the exact level of smokiness and flavor depends on your tastebuds, so use this as a guide rather than a hard and fast rule. Looking at this chart, you will notice that sweeter and lighter woods pair well with chicken and seafood, whereas stronger smelling woods like mesquite and hickory go best with pork and beef. Feel free to experiment with different woods as you like, but remember that chicken and seafood will absorb more flavor, while pork and beef will not. USING CHUNK VS. CHIPS VS. PELLETS WOOD Once you’ve determined the type of wood that you want to use, there is another decision that you have to make, and that’s the size and shape of the wood. You can get chips or chunks, and there are benefits and downsides to both. There is no right answer here, only preferences. Some smokers swear by chips, whereas others like chunks. Here is a breakdown of each. USING CHIPS WHEN SMOKING MEAT If you’re planning on smoking for only a couple hours or so, then chips are your best bet. The important thing to remember about the size of the wood is that the thicker it is, the longer it will last. To help ensure that your wood doesn’t burn out before your meat is done, you should soak it in water first for up to 30 minutes. USING CHUNKS WHEN SMOKING MEAT If you’re a serious smoker, then you probably want to cook your meat all day long rather than just a few hours at a time. If that’s the case, then wood chunks are your best friend as they will last much longer and provide more smoke. To help get the most out of your wood pieces, soak them for up to an hour in water beforehand. USING PELLETS WHEN SMOKING MEAT There is a third option, but pellets can burn off quickly, so they should only be used if you plan on doing a light smoke to

72

your meats. These are best if you only want a little bit of smokiness to your food rather than cooking for hours on end. FAQS Considering that you’re a novice to the whole concept of smoking, we know that you have a lot of unanswered questions. Thus, we’ll try to touch on all the different topics that might come up during your smoke session. HOW HOT SHOULD I MAKE MY GRILL? Because you’re cooking for hours at a time and since you use indirect heat, as opposed to cooking on an open flame, the goal is to keep the heat low and steady. The best temperature range lies somewhere between 200 and 250 degrees. This is where you will need a quality thermometer to see how warm your grill is during your cook times. If you plan on smoking your meats for hours on end, then you must change your charcoal and wood every couple of hours. If you are using a gas grill, then you still need to swap out for new wood once the old batch has burned out. Thus, be sure to keep an eye on your temperature level so that it doesn’t get too cold inside. DO I NEED TO FLIP MY MEAT WHEN SMOKING ON GRILL? NO! Sorry for being so brash, but that is a rookie mistake. When smoking, you don’t have to worry about one side getting hotter than the other, because the meat cooks indirectly. That means that you should keep your lid closed until the meat is ready. The only reason you should touch your set-up is to make room for new wood chips or charcoal. DO I HAVE TO SOAK MY WOOD WHEN SMOKING MEAT? No, you don’t, but if not, then you will have to change it much more often. Additionally, soaking your wood means that you won’t get as sharp of a smoke flavor to your meat. The best flavor comes from a nice, even coating of smoke, and using dry wood will create too much aroma at one time. HOW DO I KNOW IF THE MEAT IS COOKED ALL THE WAY THROUGH ON A SMOKER? Generally speaking, if you are smoking for two or three hours, the meat should be thoroughly cooked. If you are nervous or paranoid about it, then check it with a meat thermometer to be sure (especially with chicken). The inside of the meat should be at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature is high enough to kill all of the bacteria that may still reside in the raw meat by the time it reaches your refrigerator. When looking at pork or beef, you may notice that the inside looks pink. That doesn’t mean that the meat is not cooked well enough, it’s just a side effect of the smoking process. Hardcore smokers call that the “smoke ring.” CAN I SMOKE PRE-COOKED MEATS? Yes, you can. The reason you might want to do this is so you don’t have to worry about food temperatures, as well as the fact that you will have a much shorter cooking time. If you do decide to smoke pre-cooked meat, make sure that it wasn’t smoked before it reaches your grill. Otherwise, you could be adding too much flavor which will make it taste worse. CAN I STILL MARINATE MY MEATS BEFORE PLACING ON THE SMOKER? Of course you can! In fact, you should definitely do that. Because smoking takes so long, you want to make sure that you get as much flavor as possible. Marinades complement smoking beautifully as they add layers upon layers of complex flavors. As stressed earlier, adding marinades takes some experimenting. For chicken and poultry, you will want to soak it in a marinade or brine for a full day or so before smoking. This will

Find us on Facebook. "Grill Master's" continued from pg 72 ensure that you get the meat thoroughly infused before you toss it in the smoker. For beef and pork, a dry or wet rub will do nicely. WHAT DOES THE LIQUID IN THE DRIP PAN DO IN THE SMOKER? It simply helps control your smoker temperature. The more liquid that you have in the pan, the lower the ambient temperature will be. Thus, you want to make sure that the level is about half an inch; otherwise, it could lead to increased smoking times. If you want to experiment with flavors, use juice or beer instead of water in your drip pan. Pineapple and apple juice are the best, especially for poultry. Much like marinades, liquid in the drip pan can enhance the complex flavors in your smoked meats. DO I LEAVE THE MEAT UNCOVERED THE WHOLE TIME IN A SMOKER? If you want to get a juicier cut of meat, you can wrap it in foil for part of your smoking time. Real smoking aficionados leave the meat fully exposed to heat and don’t touch it until it’s done. However, that doesn’t mean that wrapping it in foil ruins your meal. Generally speaking, there is a ratio that you can follow for juicier meat. It goes like this: you first leave your meat exposed for half the cooking time. Then, you wrap it in foil and cook it like that for a third of the overall time. Lastly, you unwrap it and leave it open for the remainder of the cooking time. For example, if you want to smoke your meats for two hours, follow this pattern. You leave your meat exposed for one hour (half the cooking time), then you wrap it in foil for 40 minutes (one-third of the overall time), and then unwrap it for the remainder, which in this case will be 20 minutes. Following this ratio will ensure that your meat stays juicy and tender throughout the smoking process. CAN I SMOKE MEAT IF IT’S STILL COLD?

74

Livestock Plus Inc.

Bulls developed on high-forage, low-starch diets.

You could, much in the same way that you could eat raw beef. While it’s technically possible, we don’t recommend it at all. For best results, make sure that your meat is at room temperature before you toss it on the grill. This way, you don’t have to worry as much about the insides getting hot enough. Plus, bringing your meat up to room temperature before placing it on the smoker makes it accept smoked flavors more readily. With that in mind, however, if you plan on smoking your meats all day, then it won’t really matter what the internal temperature is before you start smoking, as it will inevitably get cooked all the way through regardless. Finally, NEVER use frozen meat in a smoker. This will create too many problems and could lead to food safety issues. SHOULD I CHECK ON MY MEAT REGULARLY WHILE IT’S IN THE SMOKER? No, just let it be. Newbies will always worry that the meat is getting overcooked or too well done, and will check the meat obsessively. This is a huge mistake. The more times you open your grill, the more smoke will come pouring out and the greater fluctuation you will have in your cooking temperature. Only open the hood when you have to, meaning that you should only check on things to replace wood, add more charcoal or check the temperature to make sure that it’s still optimal. Conclusion So, now that you have all the tools you need to smoke, what are you waiting for? Use your new knowledge on how to smoke meat to prepare some delicious food. While your first time will not be the best, the fact is that smoking your meats is a much better way to get the results you want. As long as you’re patient and are willing to go through a few trials to get the right recipe together, you will get the best meat of your life once you’re finished. As the saying goes, anything worth doing is worth doing well. n

"Market Report" continued from pg 14 Naturally if you are already a bona-fide livestock producer has experience in hedging livestock on the Board then you’ll want to see the wholesale beef and dressed steer approach to optimizing Cattle hedges. So to get a new perspective on beef and dressed integration you’ll need to contact Michelle at 312.756.0931 Monday through Friday 9am to 430pm CST and she will help you receive on a complimentary basis for two full months by email both ‘Daily and Weekend ‘Livestock Reports’ that includes Fat and Feeder Cattle Valuations. You can also email Michelle White at mwhite@tradewithfox.com and give her your email address. And remember, hedging livestock with Chicago Board Cattle futures still has risk of loss and is not suitable for all livestock producers and investors who desire to hedge their livestock on the dirt. n

COMMENTARY

Lefty’s Logic by Eric Lee

It is that time of the year again, the days are getting longer, it is getting warmer, and thanks to Punxsutawney Phil, it looks like spring might be right around the corner. Like most cowmen, I spend all year

82

Livestock Plus Inc.

1010 N. Hancock Street Lake City, IA 51449

anticipating that first calf to hit the ground. With every calf, I get more excited about the year to come. It looks like it is going to be a very heifer heavy year. Being a Simmental and Sim-Angus breeder in southern Wisconsin the more heifers the better! As we get into the spring bull sale season, I feel like my excitement and optimism is being shared by many others with reports coming in high! Be sure to contact me or any of the other LPI team members for assistance with your spring sale and advertising needs.

COMMENTARY

For Pete’s Sake by Anthony Peoples

Old Dogs New Tricks They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. In the past several years, I’ve realized that this isn’t necessarily the case, especially in agriculture. When we put auto-steer on our tractors and combine, I realized that it was, in fact, possible for an old dog (my Dad) to learn new tricks. The old dog-new trick theory was once again disproved when the Old Dog got an iPhone. It’s truly amazing how farmers can adapt to welcome technologies in. We all enjoy reading about Mike’s food and eating adventures so I thought he should try something new. While in Des Moines for the Expo, I took Mike to a sushi restaurant. I love a good ribeye and I love good sushi. Mike was hesitant to say the least. The Chef, jiggling a creature in front of him to give it a semblance of life, did nothing to help my cause. Against all odds, Mike tried it. “Nope! Send that back and cook it!” he said as he shook his head. I thought then, that in fact, you cannot teach some dogs new tricks. When we finished eating (he had a cooked salmon steak), Mike pulled out his phone and got us an Uber. I’ll leave it up to you to forge your opinion on the matter of old dogs and new tricks.

Spring is coming, and for those of you that love winter... sorry, not sorry! I’m so very ready for green grass and not completely freezing my extremities when we do chores. Let me warn you that this article is going to be a bit of a lecture on using sunscreen and practicing SAFE SUN! It is so important to me to share my story so others can be aware and make smart decisions when enjoying our wonderful sunny spring/summer weather. It turns out that skin cancer does not discriminate and is highly unpredictable! For those of you that are in my inner circle, you know I’ve been having skin cancers removed since 2005. Actinic Keratosis (AK) otherwise known as pre-cancerous spots are very common for people. If caught early, they can be harmless, just annoying to remove. However, if left untreated, AKs can turn into squamous cell carcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), when caught promptly, can be successfully treated. But when they become more advanced, these skin cancers can become very dangerous. It’s very important to be on the lookout for any SCC warning signs, including new, changing or unusual skin growths. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is caused by damage and subsequent DNA changes to the outermost layer of skin. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and indoor tanning is the major cause of BCCs and most skin cancers. For the most part, I have been removing a majority of BCC, with just a few SCCs. Unfortunately, in my recent biopsies three of the four spots she checked were SCC. One tiny spot was in the middle of my cheek. My mom had commented that she hadn’t seen a thing on my cheek. The Wednesday before the Iowa Beef Expo I had a MOHS surgery and had planned on having a couple stitches but no big deal. The MOHS surgery is to take the least amount of tissue possible but still getting all of the cancer. So, after Dr. Feldman got my margins clear of cancer she sent me to the plastic surgeon, Dr. Koch, to close the lovely hole in my cheek. As much as I dreaded how much more he would need to cut I’m truly grateful to have someone so knowledgeable. I realize I will never be the “same” but I hope that someone reads this or sees my scar and either starts a better sunscreen regimen or passes it on to someone that could benefit! As a young adult I never wore sunscreen and I tanned in tanning beds like crazy! PRACTICE SAFE SUN! FACTS from www.skincancer.org • More than 419,000 cases of skin cancer in the U.S. each year are linked to indoor tanning, including about 245,000 BCCs. • People who have ever tanned indoors have a 29 percent increased risk of developing skin cancer. • Any history of indoor tanning increases your risk of developing BCC before age 40 by 69 percent. BE PROACTIVE
