Greetings, Ok, this weather is starting to really annoy me. I have been doing this traveling thing for some 30 years and I’m starting to think that the weather is telling me that winter is no longer a friend. One thing I keep telling myself every day is, one day closer to spring. It was with extreme pleasure that I accepted the task of helping judge the 2019 Iowa Beef Expo BBQ contest for the second year. Last year’s contest was a great experience, but 2019 brought new things to the table. We had a little twist this year as we had the difficult task of judging the baked bean contest as well. Seriously, I have not seen this many ways to prepare baked beans. We had beans with hamburger, roast, brisket, tri tips, and one even had cubed ribeye, and a whole host of different ingredients. How can any sane warm-blooded American boy just try a small sample, a very small sample, of eleven different ways to make baked beans? I wanted to eat all of every sample, except one. That one was made for young folks with very tough bellies that like very hot and spicy food. It almost made me cry to throw away those samples of beans. This is a real tough job, but our table had a group of very professional well-versed food critics that did a

professional job judging. At our table, table one, consisted of, Brian Gonder; headman at Central Iowa Featherlite, Lou Sipolt; television personality at CW Iowa 23 TV, Andrew Speas; Simmental Breeder, Rusty Gibbs; Iowa Beef Industry Council, Scott Grass; Nichols Cryo Genetics/Simmental guru, and myself. Now, about the meat of this contest. The brisket; again, master chefs provided us with difficult decisions but with our keen skills as food critics we got it done. I was really impressed with one in particular. They had some burnt ends that were way good and the chunk of brisket was better than deadly. The bad part of this is we don’t get to talk to these master chefs. I would really like to quiz them on seasoning and meat preparation. The good news is, with my investigation skills, I did figure out that same contestant that I was raving about won the contest! Congrats to all the folks involved; chefs, contestants, and special thanks to the Iowa Beef Breeds council, Mindy and Rob Campfield for making this event part of the Iowa Beef Expo. As I write this greeting, I’m in the middle of Iowa Beef Expo and Nebraska Cattlemen Classic. We have at least one sale a day for probably the next month or so. If you are looking for something special we will probably see it or know where it’s at, so just give any of us a call and we will help direct you. Please pray for our political leaders that they work together and use common sense to help make this country safe and secure. "Cattle for Profit" continued from pg 18 1. CHOOSE YOUR CATTLE BREED Choosing the best cattle breed to raise for profit goes well beyond just selecting the ones that sell for the most. In order to choose the best possible breed for your business, you’ll need to consider the following: Your area’s climate and microclimate Your goals for raising cattle Current and future market trends Practice viable mating and breeding systems Consider the Climate: Not all cattle are created equal, and this is why some fare better in certain climates than others. Not all farms across North America can expect the same climate and weather patterns. In fact, farms that reside within the same area can even experience differences in microclimates where pockets of rain or dust storms may be more frequent than even what your neighbors get. Choose cattle based on their breed and the weather conditions they are traditionally capable of withstanding. If your region experiences cold, bitter conditions in the winter, then opt for a breed like

the Scotch Highland or Galloway that are accustomed to surviving and foraging during coarse winters. On the other hand, the American Criollo breeds are descendants of Spanish cattle and were bred to temper more moderate and hot climates. Senepol, Ankole-Watusi, Sanga and any Zebu breed cattle are originally from hot African, Asian and Middle Eastern climates and can stand the heat on southern farms during the summer months. Your Cattle-Raising Goals: Once you’ve assessed your own climate and have found some breed options that are best suited for your location, you’ll want to consider what your cattleraising goals are. Are you planning on raising dairy or beef cattle, or both? Take your own business growth goals into consideration when selecting your breed. Will you prefer to maintain a smaller farm or expand into a larger operation? Certain breeds are also more suited for smaller farm operations, and some are more suitable for larger businesses. Breeds like Dexter, Welsh Black and Normande are bred to be smaller, more manageable cattle breeds and are thought to be more suited for beginners. Be sure to know ahead of time what your required forage supply will be and be prepared to purchase additional forage supply as necessary. “Over the years the successful cattle raisers have been the top forage growers. Thus my tip would be: Follow a practical rotational or management intensive grazing system. Our grazing schools are excellent in teaching the principles that provide farmers with the knowledge to effectively utilize the forage they produce.” -Eldon Cole, University of Missouri Extension Livestock Specialist, Southwest Region, Mt. Vernon To produce enough forage, an intensive land management system must be in place. Be sure to gather as much expertise as possible about growing your forage and utilizing your land to its fullest potential, including knowing and implementing pasture grazing techniques. Test Your Soil Quality: Given that your livestock is your livelihood, it’s a best practice to provide the highest nutritional quality

forage as possible for your cattle. Soil test different areas of your land to know where to add additional nutrients to keep a healthy supply of forage. Additionally, soil testing helps save money. Fertilizers can be expensive, so by only adding nutrients to areas that need it, you can save important resources. Implement Feed Management: By having a deliberate feed management system, you avoid potential pitfalls such as grain overload and maturing hay that can lead to overnutrition or undernutrition for the animals. Ensuring proper and regular nutrient intake is critical to keeping your livestock healthy and productive. Managing your pasture also ensures you are maximizing your forage production and limiting the amount of resources you spend on care and fertilizing. 3. ALWAYS PROTECT AND PRIORITIZE ANIMAL HEALTH While proper nutrition is critical to raising healthy and productive cattle, there are plenty of other health factors to take into account. Just as with raising kids, you want to always be placing

Miller Named American Simmental Assn. Lifetime Promoter Recipient

Ron Miller was named the recipient of the American Simmental Association’s (ASA) 2019 Lifetime Promoter Award. The award recognizes individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the development of the Simmental/Simbrah breeds. The Lifetime Promotor is one of the highest awards given by the ASA. For more than five decades, Ron Miller has been an effective voice for the beef industry, including Simmental. Growing up on a farm/ ranch at Cambridge, Nebraska, his work with beef cattle began at a very early age. Immediately after high school in the 1960s, he established his own fitting and showing enterprise, exhibiting his own cattle along with those of his clients. Later, he branched out into other aspects of the industry, including cattle hauling and consulting. He terminated his trucking career almost 25 years ago, but not before he transported cattle into every state in the continental US and most Canadian provinces. He has consulted on hundreds of sales across many breeds and offered his assistance and expertise to ensure the smooth running of countless local, state and national livestock expositions, including the renowned National Western in Denver and the American Royal in Kansas City. Partial to Simmental, he has maintained a small herd of select females over the years and holds ASA membership number 3237, issued in the early years of the Association’s existence. Miller has made countless close friends during his lifetime. “It’s the people. The people are the primary reason I still stay involved, people I have met clear across the beef industry,” he said. “A friendly cup of coffee, conversation over breakfast or lunch—you can’t believe how much they have meant to me over the years.” Miller recalls working with and for a number of producers who led the way for the breed in America. “I worked Jack Winninger’s first sale in Cody, Wyoming, I was involved with Tom Risinger and Rio Vista in Texas, had a 24-year relationship with Hudson Pines in New York, and worked Gateway Simmental’s first sale in Montana,” he added. n

HAVE A CONTINGENCY PLAN Contingency planning, like financial planning, is a good business practice, especially when raising cattle for profit. By nature, the cattle business can have its up and downs. This is inevitable. How you plan for these inconsistencies, however, can make all the difference in your success. To have a well-rounded contingency plan, consider the following questions: • Who will take over if you become incapacitated? • Do you have a qualified animal sitter who can care for your livestock while you are away? • What financial plans do you have if a disease spreads through your livestock? • Are you financially and mentally prepared to handle the ebbs and flows of the cattle market?

"Cattle for Profit" continued from pg 66 Have a Management Back-up Plan: Farmers know their animals get sick, but humans do, too. If you were to have an accident or become ill, you’d still need to have someone competent take over farm operations and care for your animals. Develop a plan ahead of time as to who you can rely on to fill in, so you aren’t left scrambling to find help when an incident occurs. Perhaps you have a spouse, children or other family members who can assist. Or perhaps you can make arrangements with your neighbors or other local livestock raisers to provide each other with support in these types of situations. The same should be thought about if you decide to go away. You’ll need to have an animal sitter to hire as well. Whatever the case may be, it will provide you with incredible peace of mind knowing you have a team to fall back on if anything should happen. Maintain Financial Reserves: There are endless potential scenarios that can arise and leave you with financial stress. To avoid these scenarios, try to plan ahead for as many situations as possible. Though you can’t be prepared for everything, you can be prepared in general. Determine how many months of financial reserves you have saved to weather a faltering market. Understand what it would cost you should your animals contract and spread a disease. Research the cost of new equipment, fence installations or facility repairs should any of these need replacing. By informing yourself of the various costs of doing business, you can help mentally and financially prepare your contingency plan and funds for these and other scenarios. Protect Your Livestock: Because your livelihood depends on the health and wellbeing of your cattle, it’s important to have a contingency plan to cover their value should something go awry. Livestock insurance is available in several different forms and can be tailored to your particular operation. You can have each animal covered separately, have them covered under your property insurance or insure them as an entire herd.

Regardless of how you insure them, it’s important to have this to fall back on if disease or injury affects your valued animals. 10. IMPLEMENT A LEARNING PLAN The key to sustained success in cattle raising is continuous learning. The cattle industry is constantly changing, improving and looking for ways to become more cost effective while still providing high-quality products. Your ability to stay informed and continue learning and implementing best practices will ensure you develop a thriving business. Here are some ways to implement your own cattle industry learning plan: • Develop a working relationship with a mentor or other experienced experts • Subscribe to livestock trade journals and newsletters • Develop a relationship with your local university agriculture program Find a Mentor: Especially in the beginner stages, it’s best to find a mentor and work with them for a while until you’re ready to take the full plunge yourself. A mentor could be someone who is willing to have you shadow them, such as a neighbor or another cattle farmer in your community. Build connections with beef producers, dairy farmers or even other livestock ranchers in your area. Ask them questions about the industry to learn about their challenges and what has made them successful. This research goes a long way into helping you prepare for your own business. Read Trade Journals: There are a number of trade journals, blogs and newsletters available that monitor industry trends and provide excellent information for beginners and experts alike. Subscribe to these publications and learn about different cattle breeds, farming techniques, operational and management practices, marketing ideas and more. By becoming a subscriber, it ensures you are staying informed regularly. When the information comes directly to you regularly, it’s easier to stay in the habit of continuous learning. Work With the University: Your state university’s agriculture

The Road Behind and Ahead for Fat and Feeder Cattle and Other Markets by Michael Seek, Fox Group at the Board of Trade

This last month has seen three remarkable things happen that most Cattle analysts and veterans did not and would have expected. One, we just had the first polar vortex in the Midwest in 5 years and the freezing of the Cattle belt did not have the impact on Cattle prices that was expected. Two, the Choice Beef cutout through late January and into mid-February was quite strong and yet not even 10 head of Cattle traded Dressed Choice 65-80% were able to trade up and over 200 per cwt. Third, the Commerce Department has now announced the lowest ‘Retail Sales’ reading in 10 years back to the housing-crash crisis of 2008. What do the foregoing 3 things tell us? That we all need to be concerned about the demand side of the equation for Cash Fats and of course Feeder Cattle too. Why Feeder Cattle too? The Feeder Cattle have been stuck in the mud on the low side of price ranges even as Cash Fats made a pretty good run up from January 7th through the 31st of the month. Since then it has been a sideways affair even as Choice Beef prices have moved up or stayed up in the high side of 214 to 218 per cwt. Shanghai financial markets are back down to levels of 13 years ago and Euro zone economic data is on the verge of recession. When one also factors in the report by the Washington Post that 7 million folks are delinquent by 90 days or more on their auto loans then we all best be concerned about the possibility of another recession here in our own country. Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has made compelling cases for ‘Stagflation’ for many, many months now and the ‘stagnant’ economic growth with ‘inflation’, hence ‘stagflation’ appears to be getting a foothold of sort. Naturally the stagnant economic growth could be good or bad for the cattle industry. It could be bad since poor economic growth may have folks feeling a tight budget at home and thus make less trips to Texas Roadhouse. It could be good, however, if the US Dollar sells off for several months since the Federal Reserve stays ‘patient’ [Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s words] and does not raise interest rates. We’ve all heard the old saying ‘Feeders are the leaders’ and if this is still the case then the Feeder Cattle’s inability to run when the Fat Cattle run on the Board is cause for concern. Hedging your Cattle or optimizing sale barn purchases will be key for the last part of the ‘freeze’ and into spring. Results from the 41 auctions (4,182 acres) this past month average $8,754/acre for high quality ground. Medium quality ground averaged $5,052/acre. Low quality ground is also trending steady at an average of $4,811/acre. Look for a busy February and March. There are still some downward pressures we are fighting in the farmland market. Taxes, interest rates, commodity prices, and government programs all have influence on what farmers are paying. Overall, land is stable, and we are not seeing sellers that must sell; mostly just non-participating farmland owners selling to change their investments, or settle an estate.

The Future of Antibiotic Use in Cattle It’s no secret that antibiotic resistance is a growing concern worldwide. While science shows that resistance is impacted by a variety of factors, not the least of which is antibiotic use by humans, livestock production has become an initial target for addressing antimicrobial resistance. This effort is leading to pressure from consumers, retailers and regulators for more judicious use of antibiotics by livestock producers.

ANTIBIOTIC PRESSURE FROM RETAILERS

McDonald’s, the U.S.’s largest buyer of beef, has recently taken a firm stance on how antimicrobials, including antibiotics, should be used in beef production. In late 2018, McDonald’s published their “Antibiotic Use Policy for Beef and Dairy Beef.” This new policy outlines McDonald’s approach to “reduce, refine and replace” the usage of antibiotics in animal agriculture in their top ten beef markets, including the U.S. So what exactly does this mean? McDonald’s developed their policy using the World Health Organization’s list of antibiotics that are “critically important for human medicine.” The McDonald’s policy states that medically important antibiotics, such as tylosin and Draxxin, are not permitted for: • growth promotion • routine use for prevention of disease • control and/or treatment of the dissemination of a clinically diagnosed infectious disease. McDonald’s plans to begin pilot projects this year, develop reduction goals by the end of 2020, and starting in 2022, begin reporting progress.

Wendy’s also made headlines recently regarding antibiotic use in beef production. Wendy’s states, “Our long-term goal is to find ways to phase out the routine use of medically important antibiotics on the farms that our suppliers source from.” In 2018, Wendy’s purchased 20% of their “fresh and never frozen” beef from producers who pledged to reduce the use of Tylosin by one-fifth.

REGULATIONS ON ANTIBIOTIC USE

In 2017, the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) was instituted to regulate how medically important antibiotics can be administered to animals in feed and water. FDA continues to develop plans for regulation of antibiotic use in livestock,The agency’s goal is to “align antimicrobial use with principles of antimicrobial stewardship”. FDA plans to achieve this by: 1) Revising use conditions of approved medically important antimicrobials in food animals. This likely means defining duration of use guidelines for chlortetracylcine and tylosin and transitioning common antibiotics from over the counter to prescription. 2) Enhancing the process to support new product development---potentially by revising and adding to the list of medically important antibiotics, resulting in further restrictions.

WHAT IS ICA DOING?

The approval of and durations of uses for antibiotics are clearly important considerations for livestock producers who see value in drugs that keep animals healthy and productive. Maintaining use of antibiotics and promoting judicious use are pri-

orities of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). ICA members approved a 2019 policy related to how ionophores are classified that seeks to maintain cattle producers’ ability to utilize polyether ionophores by working to keep these drugs off of the medically important list as they are not medically important to humans. Continued work with veterinarians, regulatory agencies like FDA and consumers are critical and will be focuses of ICA and NCBA in the future. At the national level, NCBA has a “Key Technologies Working Group” that has focused on ensuring that antibiotic use in livestock is accurately reported. NCBA also gives cattle producers a voice in the US Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, which includes antibiotic use in their framework. As pressure to reduce antibiotic use mounts, research into animal disease prevention and treatment becomes even more important. NCBA has joined the International Consortium on Antimicrobial Stewardship in Agriculture, which funds research on antibiotic alternatives. Additionally, ICA is represented on the Iowa Livestock Health Advisory Council, which allocates research dollars towards specific animal disease priorities. In the beef industry, those priorities are anaplasmosis, Digital Dermatitis (hairy heel wart), trichomoniasis, animal well-being issues, and Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD)/ Mycoplasma bovis. At the end of the day, cattlemen want to do what is best for their livestock in order to produce healthy and nutritious beef for families around the world.

Sire Selection Decisions As the bull-buying season gets underway, do your homework to help ensure the bull(s) you purchase meet your needs. First, make sure you understand the use of Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) and selection indexes. While EPDs are not the only selection information you should consider, EPDs are the most effective tools available to describe the genetic differences between animals within and across herds. EPDs are much more effective predictors than actual or adjusted performance records. If an EPD is available for a trait it should be used instead of an animal’s own performance record for that trait. The EPD removes age and environmental effects that can bias a decision based on actual or adjusted performance records. Not all EPDs are the same, so make sure you know the appropriate information for the breed of cattle you are purchasing. Obtain the breed average EPDs and a percentile rank table available from the most current genetic evaluation for the breed of interest. This info can be found on most breed association websites. These tools will enable you to compare the relative genetic merit of individual animals to other animals within the breed. Second, ask yourself if there is a particular weakness in your cow herd. What breed(s) will assist in improving those weaknesses or fit in your mating system? If you are using a crossbreeding system make sure the breed you select fits your objectives. Other factors to consider are source of replacement heifers and endpoints for progeny marketing (weaning, back-grounded or in the beef). Assessment of these factors will help point you to the best breed for your

needs and the combinations of maternal, growth, or carcass traits that best fit your operation and environment. Third, set a realistic budget for bull purchases. Evaluation of a seedstock supplier’s prior year sale averages will give you an idea of what to expect in terms of purchase costs. A good rule of thumb is that a quality bull costs roughly the same as 4-5 feeder steers or twice the amount of a fat steer. Lastly, get to know your seedstock supplier and make sure they know you and your operational goals. Seek out recommendations from your supplier well in advance of the sale. Once you receive the sale catalog make a short list of bulls (roughly three times more than you actually need) that fit your specifications. Arrive at the sale site early to inspect the bulls on your short list. Shorten this list based on conformation and updated data to identify your purchase prospects. Keeping the sale order in mind, stay focused on the bulls you selected earlier and stick to your plan to avoid impulse buys. Let us know if we can assist you. Livestock Marketeers Induct Three Into Hall of Fame DENVER — The Livestock Marketeers — An informal fraternity of livestock fieldmen, auctioneers, sale managers and related livestock business leaders met for their 54th Annual Banquet at the National Western Club on January 19th. The event was hosted by American Live Stock; master of ceremonies was J. Neil Orth, Executive Vice President of the American-International Charolais Association and 1984 Hall of Fame inductee. The Livestock Marketeers group was formed in 1965 by Harry Green, Ross Miller and Claud Willett. Their purpose was to establish a fraternal organization of livestock professionals, and to make annual awards to encourage younger members of the industry to succeed in their chosen profession. Tommy Barnes Tommy is a graduate of The University of Tennessee where he received a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. Directly out of college he took a job with T.E. Mitchell and Son in Albert, New Mexico. The ranch raised both registered and commercial Hereford cattle along with registered quarter horses. After that he began his nine year career with the American Hereford Association. He initially travelled the states of Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois after which he serviced Oklahoma. When he finished his tenure with the AHA he moved directly into his career as an auctioneer. He serves as an auctioneer for several elite purebred operation all over the country Stuart Wilson Stuart Wilson grew up on a purebred livestock and grain farm near Findlay, Illinois, where he raised Shorthorn cattle and Poland

China hogs. He was active in both 4-H and FFA showing at the local, state, and national levels. He was a member of the 1966 Illinois State FFA winning livestock judging team which placed second in the national contest at the American Royal. Stuart graduated from Western Illinois University in 1971 with a BS in animal science. While at WIU, he was the founding president of the Alpha Gamma Sigma fraternity, and a member of Block and Bridle. He was on Western’s highly successful livestock judging team in 1970. Graduate work followed at the University of Missouri. In 1971, Stuart began his career right out of college as a field representative for The Shorthorn World. He was the publisher of the magazine at the time it was sold in 1976. In 1972, he became an insurance agent for American Live Stock Insurance Company/ Harding and Harding. In 1973, he formed Stuart Wilson Sale Management which managed cattle sales throughout the United States and Canada for over four decades. In 2006, Stuart joined American Live Stock Insurance Company/Harding and Harding as the manager of the cattle department. Today he is the manager and head underwriter for the Livestock Division of American Live Stock, a subsidiary of Markel Services, Inc. Stuart and his wife, Ann, reside on the family farm near Findlay, Illinois. They have a daughter, Robyn, and a granddaughter, Avery. Stuart and Ann have been married 45 years, and they are both active members of the Findlay United Methodist Church. Fred Stivers (Posthumous) Fred Stivers was a sought after ringman for over four decades and regarded by many as the best photographer in the business. Growing up in Ohio, Fred was competitive in the show ring with Angus, Shorthorn and Hereford steers, winning the Ohio State Fair and Champion Shorthorn in Chicago. Fred’s livestock marketing career began with the Charolais Way and continued with the Simmental Register and then the Drovers Journal. Well, I am sure I left you all on the edge of your seats by telling you that I have some exciting news to share. Tamar and I would like to announce that we will be moving this spring. We will still be located in Illinois but we are moving about 2.5 hours south of where we are now. Tamar will be finishing her PhD next month and has accepted a job with The Maschhoffs as a Geneticist. Tamar will be working at their main office which is located in Carlyle, IL. This is a very exciting and great opportunity for us and we are looking forward to this next chapter of our lives. Thankfully, the flexibility of my job allows me to continue doing what I love. We will be closing on a house next month and will be accepting offers for anyone out there that enjoys packing and moving! We were fortunate enough to find a place that has some pasture with it, so at least some of the cows will be making the trek south at some point. We will owe a big thank you to our parents for stepping up and helping us still be able to move forward with our cattle operation through this transition. We really appreciate your support, thoughts and prayers through this process. I will be sure to keep you all in the loop in the coming months. So, Taylor and I were headed out to the Iowa Beef Expo and she all of the sudden says, “Mom, I will be a teenager in 3 years!” Holy buckets it’s bad enough she turned double digits a month ago ... I’m NOT ready for a teenage Taylor yet! Taylor had so much fun getting to know our booth friends at the expo! Thank you to Jolynn Ernst, Laura Thompson and Heather Ziesman for participating in the Coke or Pepsi question book. You all were great sports and she hasn’t stopped talking about when we get to see all of you again! Tuck stayed busy the entire weekend and had fun helping the IJBBA crew with check-in, ring help, etc. All the while, my beautiful baby girl, Treva, was home with her Dad not feeling well and running a fever. Mom guilt has got to be the worst feeling in the world! Matt had taken me out for an early Valentine Day dinner at Spencer’s Steak & Chop House in Creston, Iowa. On the recommendation of our friend, Callie Rieck-Anderson, we got the special night, Irish Whiskey Strip Steak had 1Jameson and B&Bthat Equipment:Layout 1 9/19/12 10:28 which AM Page

whipped butter on top. Wow, it was incredible! Matt was wishing he had a dinner roll or something to soak up the rest because he was tempted to lick his plate. I also had a house salad with their house parmesan dressing and then gouda mashed potatoes. To top it off I had a chocolate dipped strawberry martini! The bartender told me it’s not like any of the recipes on the internet, she has a couple special ingredients. So delightful!!!! My favorite part has to be the oatmeal cream pie with cinnamon ice cream! Seriously, there are not adequate words to describe how much I love this dessert! While I write this, we are just wrapping up the Iowa Beef Expo for 2019! Thank you to all of you that took a moment out of your day to stop and chat, that is the part of Expo I always look forward to every year! I absolutely cherish all the friendships, new and old! I hope Nebraska Cattlemens’ Classic, Illinois and Ohio Beef Expos have a fantastic year as well! Please travel safe in this crazy winter weather and we would like to wish all the exhibitors luck!
